Remembering Nicole Morin 30 years later Nicole’s Run, vigil, also served as fundraiser for the Canadian Centre for Child Protection CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Leslie Polito was just a few grades ahead of Nicole Morin at Wellesworth Public School 30 years ago, when the eightyear-old vanished without a trace from her Etobicoke apartment building. “I was about 10 or 11 at the time, and I remember everyone being very concerned,” she said. “Before Nicole went missing, we used to walk to school on our own and go to the park by ourselves, but that all changed that summer.” On Aug. 19, Polito brought her own kids – daughter Reese, who, at eight, is the same age Nicole was when she was abducted, and fiveyear-old son Ryder – out to Etobicoke’s Centennial Park for Nicole’s Run. The awareness-raising memorial run and candlelight vigil was organized by police from south Etobicoke’s 22 Division, as well as officers from the Divisional Policing Support Unit, to mark the 30th anniversary of Nicole’s disappearance. Last seen leaving her family’s penthouse apartment unit at 627 The West Mall on Tuesday, July 30, 1985, Nicole waved goodbye to her mother that morning at around 11 a.m. before heading down to the lobby to meet a friend. The pair was supposed to then head to the apartment building’s outdoor pool for a morning of swimming, but Nicole never arrived. vanished without a trace Although Nicole vanished without a trace, never to be seen or heard from again,

police believe public awareness is the key to solving the decades-long mystery of her abduction, which is why events like Nicole’s Run – which drew hundreds of people, including dozens of families like the Politos – are so important to the case. hope remains “The simple fact is, folks have never given up hope that Nicole will return one day. We do have to be realistic, but we can’t give up hope,” 22 Division Supt. Shaun Narine said last month in an interview with The Guardian. “It’s been a long outstanding case – 30 years of active investigation and following up on leads...we want to find some resolve to it; some closure, at least, for the family; a conclusion to the case. Yes, it’s been 30 years, but as with any missing child, you never stop looking.” On hand at the run was Det. Sgt. Madelaine Tretter of 22 Division, who is assigned to Nicole’s case. “I’ve been actively pursuing all leads for the past seven-and-a-half years,” Tretter told those in attendance. In addition to raising awareness about Nicole’s case, Nicole’s Run also acted as a fundraiser for the Canadian Centre for Child Protection and its website, MissingKids.ca – ultimately raising more than $3,000 for the “national charity dedicated entirely to the personal safety of children,” said Lindsay Lobb, supervisor of MissingKids.ca “We know that Nicole and every child out there that’s missing is not just a face on

a page – they’re children who are loved, who have parents, grandparents, friends, siblings, community members, classmates who miss them. These families do not move on. They do not grieve. They have no answers,” Lobb said. The story of Nicole’s tragic abduction and her of family’s

fruitless decades-long search for answers served as an alltoo-real reminder to many of the parents in attendance of the importance of educating their children of the dangers that can sometimes lurk even close to home. “More than ever, we hear about young kids disappearing,” said Vadeo Sproxton,

who came to Nicole’s Run from Brampton to run in the 5K event with Team Sprocket Rockets, which included husband Roy and daughters Emma, 8, Anika, 10, and Kaija, 11. “(Nicole’s) story is so sad. I’m always telling my girls to be aware of their surroundings and to watch out

The case never closes on children who go missing T

hirty years ago this summer, Toronto lost its innocence when an eight-year-old girl named Nicole was abducted from her Etobicoke apartment building. Children didn’t walk to school alone anymore. Parents looked to strangers with suspicion and filled their kids’ heads with dire consequences if they dared roam carefree. The first Nicole’s Run took place last week to mark the anniversary of Nicole Morin’s long-unsolved missing child case. Though a tragic story itself, the event focused on the positive, offering an opportunity to fundraise for the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (CCCP) and a chance to keep Nicole’s case – and those of other missing children – top of mind in the hopes of generating new leads. After 30 years, police insist hope still exists for answers. Shaun our view Narine, superintendent of Toronto 22 Division, told Metroland Be proactive Police Media Toronto: “As with any missin protecting ing child, you never stop looking.” The case remains open and your child police have been working nonstop since, trying to find some evidence that would help them solve the mystery. Tips are always welcome, no matter how seemingly insignificant or fuzzy on detail they may be. Nicole’s Run also serves as a reminder that children shouldn’t be afraid, but instead should be taught to be vigilant about their own safety. Society is a much different place, it’s true, but as long as children and parents are educated, innocence need not be sacrificed. CCCP’s website www.missingkids.ca offers tips on child safety and points out that the traditional advice “don’t talk to strangers” is outdated and ineffective in reducing a child’s risk of abduction and victimization. It’s only in the rarest cases that children are abducted by strangers, and more often, child abductions are committed by people who are known to the child. Visit the site to learn more, including how to protect your child against offenders lurking on the internet. Teaching your children these safety tips in a fun way can make the difference between a child who fears the world, and one who stands confidently before it. Practice “what-if” scenarios and get your child’s friends involved. In honour of Nicole, her family and those families that continue to grieve the loss of their missing children, be proactive in protecting yours.

Reflecting on big strong jets at Billy Bishop Airport and its impact on city

A

fter having flown Porter Airlines for the first time this past weekend, there’s no doubt in my mind: Robert Deluce’s little airline flying out of the Billy Bishop Airport would benefit from a jet-sized runway. My trip to Boston and back ran late on both ends: going out, because the little turboprop Dash 8 that I was to leave on was laid up with mechanical problems at another airport, and Porter couldn’t wrangle another aircraft in time. And then I bumped again – voluntarily, having missed my connection – because the plane needed to shed some passengers for the wet runway. Weather made for another delay on the way back. Big strong jets in Porter’s fleet would be a benefit – at least a benefit to travellers like me, trying desperately

david nickle the city to keep their blood pressure in check as they miss connections and arrive home past bedtime. The question of what benefits – or more to the point impacts – jet aircraft will have on the city and its waterfront remain open. In 2014, Toronto council decided to keep those questions open, resisting pressure from Porter and PortsToronto (the new name for the Toronto Port Authority) to give a preliminary OK to start work on extending runways and removing the ban on jet aircraft. Council sent the supplicants back to the drawing board, asking for clarity on some details and demanding information in new areas before

continuing the conversation any further. The conversation will be coming up again this year and next – and is getting ready to start, as a pair of reports from Waterfront Toronto and PortsToronto offer a checklist of measures to apply to public consultation, public health and the environmental assessment of the jet aircraft option. It is quite a list – a litany really, which points to the flaws in the fast-and-loose process so far. It will be very interesting to see what council makes of the plan when it finally comes forward later this year. When that happens, it will more than likely come forward without the guidance of our mayor, who has a conflict of interest on the matter owing to his son’s employment at the airport. That will leave

a similarly-constituted council enjoying a similar level of autonomy to their predecessors in 2014, when former mayor Rob Ford was effectively out of the debate for different reasons. Assuming the proponents of the expansion take the time to get their ducks in a row, things could very easily tilt the other way. But late on Sunday night, riding the brand-new people mover back from the island through that justopened pedestrian tunnel, I couldn’t help but think that another solution to the Porter dilemma is much simpler, at least on a personal level: next time I fly to Boston, take a TTC bus to Pearson. There are plenty of jets to choose from there. David Nickle is The Guardian’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Twitter: @DavidNickle

Humber baking grads whip up cake poutine at the CNE Try it one of three ways until Sept. 7 Two Humber College students are getting in on the CNE’s fun food craze this year. Their entry – cake poutine. But rather than a savoury mound of fries smothered in gravy and melted cheese curds, the creative twist on the iconic Canadian fare will tantalize your sweet tooth. Humber Baking Arts and Pastry Management graduates Alicia Cardoso and Natasha Falcioni conceived the candied carnival creations. Cake poutine started as a class project, but soon made the leap into a fun food pitch to CNE officials. The “fries” are made of vanilla bean-cake cut to

resemble crimped french fries. Humber College-sponsored poutine “fries” come topped three ways: n The Camp Fire: warm chocolate sauce, whipped topping with a maraschino cherry, graham crackers and marshmallows; n Maple Bacon Eh?: warm caramel sauce, whipped topping with a maraschino cherry, garnished with real bacon bits and maple syrup drizzle, and n The Canadian: warm strawberry sauce, whipped topping with a maraschino cherry, chocolate chips, and ripe strawberries. Try Cardoso and Falcioni’s cake poutine through Sept. 7 in Hall A of the EnerCare Centre, formerly known as the Direct Energy Building, booth 1137.

federal election

Post-secondary education costs, summer jobs concern youth at Etobicoke-Lakeshore debate TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Post-secondary education affordability, sustainable summer employment and reducing carbon gas emissions are south Etobicoke youth’s top-of-mind federal election issues. Etobicoke-Lakeshore candidates campaigned last Wednesday night at LAMP Community Health Centre at an all-candidates’ debate organized by SEYA, South Etobicoke Youth Assembly. SEYA is a youth-led, youthrun group working to actively engage community youth through workshops on leadership, skills development, teamwork and youth issues to grades 10 and 11 students, and at LAMP Wednesday nights. Approximately 30 youth attended the all-candidates’ meeting, most 14 or 15 years old, in a crowd of about 50 residents. “I came to learn about their positions,” said Varun Aggarwal, 14, a SEYA member entering Grade 9 next month at Lakeshore Collegiate Institute (LCI). “I want to know if young people want to go to college, come from another country, but can’t afford it, what can they do to help?” Incumbent Conservative candidate Bernard Trottier, 50, an area resident and a former senior consulting manager with IBM, said the Conservative government has invested $10 billion in

research, and in a Canada Savings Loan program to help Canadian youth afford the ever-increasing cost of college and university. Making Canada attractive to investors, he said, boosts economic growth, and creates jobs. “We need to make Canada the most attractive place in the world to invest. That’s ultimately how you create jobs and opportunities for young people,” Trottier said. “Training is also important; working with industry to learn their needs.” Liberal candidate James Maloney, 51, a civil trial lawyer and partner at Hughes Amys LLP, charged the Harper Conservative government has “slashed” student summer jobs’ programs, and jobs, during its nine years in office. Maloney said the opportunity for Canadian youth to pursue college or university is “not just an issue of funding. It’s an issue of fairness.” “It’s about lowering taxes on people in the middle class so they can send their kids to university. It’s not about lowering taxes on people who make the most,” said the 40-year local resident, taking a shot at the Conservatives. NDP candidate Phil Trotter, a lawyer and mediator, said his party is committed to increasing student education grants, and tuition reduction. The federal NDP platform commits to increase the Canada Student Grants

Program by $200 million a year, targeting accessibility for Aboriginal, disabled and low-income students. The NDP also propose to designate an $800 million transfer to provinces and territories to lower tuition fees. “In the Netherlands, they look at the needs of the market to make sure schools and training programs match the economy and so students become entrepreneurs not just employees,” Trotter said. The Green party addresses student debt through one year of paid employment experience, as well as a $4,000 apprentice tuition credit,

said Green candidate Angela Salewsky, a business development manager in the security industry, and member of the Lakeshore Planning Council who has lived in the riding since 1997. Salewsky ran for the Green party in the 2011 and 2014 Ontario elections, and in the lakeside riding’s 2013 byelection. Janice Murray, a bindery machine operator, has been the Marxist-Leninist party’s local candidate for more than a decade. She has lived in the riding since 1977. She is a founding member of the Women’s Association of Etobicoke, and the Lakeshore

James Maloney, Liberal

Women’s Action Group. “Education is a right,” said Murray, adding governments must increase post-secondary education funding. Bassel Wehbe, 14, will attend LCI this September. He wants to be a surgeon. “I wanted to be around important people and do something productive with my summer,” Wehbe said. “I’m enjoying listening to them. I’m interested in affordable tuition for university and medical school.” Pema Rabgha, 19, a LCI graduate, will attend George Brown College this fall to become a computer systems technician.

Janice Murray, Marxist-Leninist

“I found it very informative. I really enjoyed it. They tried to make it youth-focused,” said Rabgha. a four-year SEYA member who greeted candidates and residents at the door. He pointed to SEYA youth who swiftly approached candidates with questions after the meeting. At least six youth had their hands up with questions when the meeting ended. “The youth are engaged. The SEYA youth are talking with the candidates,” Rabgha said. “It has been eye opening. Youth now know what each party stands for.” SEYA director Janice Karmody, 21, said SEYA’s filming last year of recent high school graduates’ views on democracy sparked early interest in the current federal election campaign. “Politicians only focus on a certain demographic. They don’t focus on youth,” Michelle said in the video. “I’ve always known about low youth voter turnout, but it was eye opening when we filmed the democracy video,” said Karmody, a lifelong area resident with SEYA for seven years. “When we have these allcandidates’ meetings every election, more and more youth show interest. Most of the youth here are 14-yearolds.” Visit the South Etobicoke Youth Assembly and LAMP on Twitter @SEYALAMP and on Facebook.

>>>from page 1 workshops) is for them to be able to start that complete metamorphosis towards becoming the butterfly that they are meant to be,” said Beverly Kimotho, director of the Single Moms Ministry, of the goal of the free workshop series. “That can’t all happen in 13 or 21 weeks, but these workshops are to be the beginning of that transformation for these single moms; to get them to a place where they have accepted what their situation is and to show them that they’re able to move forward with encouragement and support.” A single mom herself when she started the Single Moms Ministry in 2010, Kimotho said she was lucky to get “a lot of support” in her own struggles, but recognized not all single moms are as fortunate as she was in that regard. “I realized that a lot of other single moms didn’t have that in their lives, so I wanted to create an environment for them to be able to get that support, so that they can be all that they’re supposed to be,” said the mother of three – a boy and two girls, ranging in age from two to eight. And so the Single Moms Ministry was born. Those single mothers who have joined the ministry over its five-year history, Kimotho said, have hailed “from all walks of life” – ranging in age, race, religion and background. “We have career moms, and we have moms who are a little younger and maybe didn’t quite finish school. We have moms who have never been married, and we have moms who are going through separation and divorce,” she said, noting that, as an outreach ministry, the Single Moms group is geared to single mothers out in the community, rather than those exclusively from within the church. “We even have moms whose kids are much older now and they come back to

the ministry as a source of help and support for those with young kids. Everybody’s welcome.” support from church To help make the Single Moms Ministry as accessible as possible, Kimotho said Islington Evangel Centre and its members provide the funding necessary to ensure that its programming (including child care and meals during workshops) are free of charge to single moms. Now entering its second cycle, Kimotho said The 21 Principles of a Healthy Single Mom life group offers a 21-week program based on a DVD series by Lori Little. It is aimed at “finding the hope and help to flourish spiritually so that you can live a life of purpose and meaning, focus and order, balance and harmony.” “It goes through everything from financials to forgive-

ness,” Kimotho added. “Members of our last group are all great friends now, which is one of the big things with groups like ours. We offer someone to talk to who can relate to what they’re going through, so that they don’t feel like they’re alone – because a lot of these moms don’t have friends who are single moms.” The Divorce Care life group, meanwhile, is new this year – a response, Kimotho said, to the fact that nearly 80 per cent of Single Moms Ministry members reported that they were going through a divorce or a separation. The 13-week program, she added, is a “friendly, caring group of single moms who will walk alongside you weekly through one of life’s most difficult experiences.” For more information about the Single Moms Ministry at Islington Evangel Centre or to register for its upcoming life groups, email info@iecfamily.com or call 416-747-7208

Celebration unites communities in honour of journey >>>from page 1 Collegiate, in Rexdale. “Learning about the history of our community is a way in which we can all connect to the land. Local history allows us to understand why things are the way they are, and, at its best, it can guide our decisions for the future,” Turner said. The Etobicoke-raised historian recently published a book which follows Brûlé’s grand voyage, The Toronto Carrying Place: Rediscovering Toronto’s Most Ancient Trail. After eight years of arduous research and writing, the author was proud to celebrate the book’s release this past May. Often juggling his job as a teaching librarian in Nepean, Ont. and his passion to relay the stories of Canada’s past, Turner was determined to piece together a comprehensive account of the Carrying Place Trail. In the wake of his achievement, Turner is happy to witness a renewed appreciation for Toronto’s roots. “The flood of recent books and events relating to Toronto’s early history may well change how we see our city and its place in Canada,” Turner said. Events will be held across the

city to remember Étienne Brûlé and Carrying Place Trail on Sept. 13. Beginning in the community of Kleinberg, hikers hailing from the Toronto area will take part in the Brûlé -Wendats Expedition in celebration of Brûlé’s discovery by embarking on a journey at 9 a.m. The band of hikers, including Turner, will make its first stop south of Steeles Avenue at noon. As the hikers continue their passage along the trail, the community will be invited to Cruickshank Park

and Weston Lions Park for a family picnic where they can offer support by meeting the hikers as they arrive between noon and 1 p.m. The hikers will be met by children of the community who will carry individually decorated paddles which were made at the Paddles Ahoy! event at Weston library. As the hikers commence the last leg of their re-enactment of Brûlé’s journey along the Humber River, the community is encouraged to meet them at their final destination; the

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

Swansea 8,000 Years Celebration at Lucy Maud Montgomery Park, 222 Riverside Dr. Visit www.swansea8000years.com for an exact time. The community will be transported through time as storytellers, Aqua Rennie, Hildy Stollery, Pat Bisset, and Edith George, relate stories of First Nations history and characters in period costumes from 25 eras who will bring some historical flair to the festivities. Children will have the chance take part in the historical fun and join in a mock archaeological dig. Information booths at the Riverside Drive festival will include early French cooking with Chantal Vechambre, information sessions with Brule historians, and the Ontario Museum Association. For Turner, learning about Canada and Toronto’s formative, historical moments has the power to create change within Canada. “Toronto’s origins are Aboriginal and French rather than English. The city is a part of all of those worlds. I believe public attitudes and policy will evolve as we learn more and more about our Aboriginal and French-Canadian heritage,” Turner said.

Toronto Police believe two suicides may be connected to the leak of customer profiles from the Ashley Madison website. Acting Staff Supt. Bryce Evans appealed to the hacking community for help in identifying those responsible for releasing the adultery website’s entire client list of more than 30 million people worldwide. “This is a unique situation that has caused enormous social and economic fallout,” Evans said during a news conference Monday. “Do the right thing and reach out to us.” Toronto-based Avid Life Media, which operates Ashley Madison, is offering a

$500,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and prosecution in the case. Evans said that on July 12 several Avid Life employees had a threatening message appear on their computer screens accompanied by the AC/DC song Thunderstruck. The post ordered Avid Life to immediately and permanently shut down the Ashley Madison site as well as the Established Men website, which connects young women with successful men. “The person or persons who posted this threat identify themselves as the Impact Team,” Evans said. “The consequences for not complying as noted in this threat would be the release of Ashley Madison and Established Men client

lists, including their names, client profiles and credit card data.” Avid Life began an internal investigation, hired a private investigation company and secured the services of Cycura, a firm established by leading cyber security experts. On Aug. 17, the suspects released the entire Ashley Madison client list along with a message titled Time’s Up. “This hack is one of the largest data breaches in the world,” said Evans, adding the hack has sparked spin-off crimes and further victimization, including “two unconfirmed reports of suicides.” Anyone with information is asked to call the Ashley Madison task force at 416808-2040.

Create props, costumes for My Lakeshore, My Home Cultural Hotspot signature project being mounted by Sirius Theatrical Company CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Lakeshore residents interested in learning more about stage management, prop building, costume design or videography are invited to take part in a series of upcoming workshops led by Sirius Theatrical Company professionals. The free workshops, planned in advance of Sirius’s My Lakeshore, My Home performance art festival Oct. 1-4, are open to theatre enthusiasts of all levels of experience aged 13 and up, said Heather Dick, festival co-ordinator and director of Sirius Theatrical Company. “They’re being led by our professional production crew and they’re going to be very practical,” Dick said of the workshops, which will be held at Sirius’ studio space at

Mimico Presbyterian Church, 119 Mimico Ave., this weekend and early next week. “Workshop participants will get a chance to actually work on a prop, or work on some costume pieces, or do some stage management activities associated with the My Lakeshore, My Home production. That way, when they come and see the festival, they’ll hopefully be able to say ‘Hey, there’s my prop!’ or ‘I helped make that costume!’. “The workshops are not only going to give them some idea of what is involved in putting a festival like this together, but will also hopefully give them an investment in what we’re doing with My Lakeshore, My Home.” Described by Dick as a “multi-generational, multicultural, interactive performance festival”, My Lakeshore,

Courtesy/Zoie Seferian

My Lakeshore, My Home actors run through a directing workshop at the Sirius Theatrical Company.

My Home is a signature partnership project of the City of Toronto’s Cultural Hotspot that is scheduled to literally hit the streets of Etobicoke’s Lakeshore community from Oct. 1-4. “It’s based on a concept

that I’d had for a long time, to create a festival in the Lakeshore area where the audience actually follows the actors along the streets,” Dick explained. All six 90-minute performances – scheduled for

Thursday, Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. – will commence outside of the Mimico Centennial Library, 47 Station Rd. Each of the 13 pieces to be performed along the My Lakeshore, My Home festival route, Dick added, were derived from the “lives and experiences” of Lakeshore residents aged 13 to 70 who attended a series of writing workshops in the community this past spring. “All who attended were asked to think about a personal story, or something they observed, or something they knew about in terms of life and living in the Lakeshore and what it means to them,” she said, noting that, from those submissions, a committee chose the 13 winning pieces to be showcased during My Lakeshore, My Home. Now that casting for the festival has been completed and rehearsals have begun,

Dick said she and her Sirius Theatrical Company colleagues have turned their attention to other aspects of the production – such as stage management, prop/ set building, costume design, and videography – and they’re once again looking to the community for their feedback during the upcoming workshops, which will take place at 119 Mimico Ave., as follows: n St a g e Ma n a g i n g – Saturday, Aug. 29 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. n Props and Set Building – Saturday, Aug. 29 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. n Costume Building – Sunday, Aug. 30 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. n Videography –Wednesday, Sept. 2 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Visit www.siriustheatrical. com or www.facebook.com/ SiriusTheatrical To register for any of the upcoming workshops, email mylakeshore@siriustheatrical.com

Techsdale connects Rexdale youth to gaming creation Teens to create their own video game by end of 14-week term; learning job and life skills ALI RAZA razaa08@gmail.com

Domise teamed up with web designer and youth worker Sam Allemang in January. “We found there’s a huge disparity between recreational investment and extracurricular investment in Rexdale,” Allemang said. Referencing the City of Toronto’s 2013 spending record, Allemang noted that Etobicoke North (where Rexdale is situated) was allocated $9.23 per capita for recreational activities. By contrast, an affluent neighbourhood like Rosedale, stretched across wards 27 and 28, received $44.36 and $83.24 respectively. Even schools in affluent neighbourhoods can raise up to $900 per student for extracurricular activities while lower-income schools in Rexdale can fundraise just $3 per student, Allemang said. In an effort to tackle these mounting setbacks, Domise and Allemang started

Rexdale youth are getting the chance to “level up” their skills and break stereotypes in a program that brings together their interests with the demands of an ever-growing industry. Techsdale, as it’s cleverly called, brings together teens interested in video games and teaches them how to create and develop their own. The 14-week pilot program, which started Aug. 16, operates out of Humber College and students are expected to have a complete, working game at the end of the program. “It’s very interactive,” said Dandré Henry, 16. “I’d like to make this into a career. I’ve never made a complete game on my own, but I’ve had experience.” The program was founded when podcaster and community activist Andray

Techsdale to allow youth to develop skills that will be useful in their adult lives. Especially in a “booming sector” with the Entertainment Software Association citing video games as a $20-billion industry for 2014. And for some youth already on their way, it’s an opportunity to bolster their skill set. “This program really helps me, I’m already in an IT pro-

gram but this adds to my skills,” said Sadaam Ahmed, 19. On a broader level Techsdale hopes to change how video games are perceived, as many popular video games feature stereotypical characters that disproportionally represent the consumers. “The tech sector is acutely homogenous, it’s predominantly white males,” Allemang said. “So the stories you see in video games can’t help but be influenced by that.” “ The reality is game consumers are much more diverse, so you’ve got a diverse audience consuming these narratives and stereotypes and they can’t help but internalize them to a large degree.” Indeed, the students at Techsdale represent that diverse audience and are building games with their own content, ideas and experiences. expenses other than the time and effort of its volunteers. It’s free for participants and Humber College has provided the necessary equipment and location for the program. The program’s grown popular with about 20 registered students and several more on a waiting list. Allemang stresses that Rexdale is in need of economic revitalization because

of the loss of manufacturing jobs in the area. “It boils down to trying to empower youth and equip them with skills to lead them to careers while searching for the next core revenue generator for the neighbourhood,” he said.

As one of the oldest business communities in Toronto, Weston Village is home to small businesses, historic buildings and an extremely civic-minded community. The neighbourhood will soon be home to W Towns, a modestly-priced development of 48 townhouses by First Avenue, slated for occupancy in May 2016. Each of the three-storey town homes will feature open-concept kitchen, living and dining on the first floor, three plus bedrooms on the top floors, three bathrooms throughout and an underground parking spot. Buyers looking for their first home used to have to look north for moderately priced homes. Located south of the crossroads where the 400 meets the 401, W Towns is an inexpensive way to break into the housing market in the city, with homes starting at $399,900. W Towns has the added benefit of being located just blocks from the new Union

Pearson Express, so residents will be able to get downtown in just 12 minutes. Touting proximity to local shops, the longstanding weekly farmers’market, and a number of schools and churches, W Towns is the ideal place to call home in the city. W Towns is surrounded by plenty of green space, from the Humber River Trail and the three large parks in Weston Village, Memorial Park, Cruickshank Park and Weston Lions park, the spacious courtyards in-between each of the blocks of townhouses on site.

The townhouses are more modern in design, while still trying to incorporate the Weston Village feel. The architecture, designed by Patrick Markus Luckie of pml.A, will tie in to the look of the Federal Building apartments located on the site of the old Weston Road post office, also owned by First Avenue. The sales centre is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. For more information about W Towns, visit www.wtowns.ca or call 647-345-0937.

Riverhouse Condos make city living easy Riverhouse Condominiums at the Old Mill makes life in the big city feel like a vacation. Surrounded by lush greenery with the Humber River just outside and the modern convenience of the Old Mill subway station across the street, these dream homes are a rare find. It’s no surprise that of the 101 suites, just a few remain available. Unlike other Toronto condos, Riverhouse by Lanterra Developments doesn’t focus on height. The 11-storey building is built on elevated land, putting floors at a higher elevation than their number suggests, while offering scenic views of the surrounding nature. Fitness enthusiasts can enjoy walking, jogging, cycling, cross country skiing, canoeing and kayaking in the area. There is also prime shopping nearby at

Bloor West Shops and Kingsway Village. The downtown core is about an 18-minute trip by subway, or add approximately 10 minutes to your commute if you prefer to drive. Though there’s a lot to do and see in the area, there’s almost no reason to leave home. Amenities in the building include a salt water pool, hot tub, steam room, fitness room, library lounge, party room and caterer’s kitchen. There is also a 24-hour concierge. The last two high-demand floorplans are the Lynngrove and Kingsgrove. The Lynngrove suite is just over 1,500 sq. ft. with a large master bedroom, a spacious second bedroom and den, and two bathrooms. This home overlooks the Humber River and Etienne Brule Park and is priced at just

over $1.1 million. The Kingsgrove suite is the last three bedroom plan available. It is over 2,100 sq. ft. and features a large master bedroom with a sitting area, spacious second and third bedrooms, and two and a half bathrooms. This suite spans the entire end of the building, and boasts exposures to the north, east and south, providing amazing views in all directions. This suite is priced at just over $1.7 million. The residents of Riverhouse enjoy a higher standard of living and all that this serene setting has to offer. The building itself features top quality furnishings and workmanship, sure to please one’s expectations. Current occupants range from empty nesters to business professionals who travel and prefer the simple condominium lifestyle. The Lynngrove suite is recommended for buyers coming from a house and looking to downsize slightly while still feeling at home. The Kingsgrove suite is spacious and popular with buyers moving out of larger homes.

NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com The Mimico Minor Lacrosse Club closed out the summer season with a huge breakthrough for its rep program, winning two of the three provincial championships that were up for grabs at the top ‘A’ competitive level. Both the Mimico Mountaineers peewee and midget teams won their respective championship games at the 2015 Ontario Lacrosse ‘A’ Final 6 championship tournament which was held over the Aug. 14-16 weekend at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre in Oakville. It was a first for the Etobicoke club which had qualified and even come close in the tournament in the past but had never actually won a championship. The Mountaineers bantam team also qualified for the Final 6 tournament but did not make the gold medal game. Mimico along with host Oakville were the only two

reason given at the time was because of the club’s growing success at the youth level. The midget Mountaineers won their gold medal game 2-1 over Oakville, avenging an earlier 4-3 preliminary round loss. Mimico advanced to the final with a 3-2 record. Mimico’s Payton Cormier was named to the midget all star team. “Discipline, tough defence, outstanding goaltending and timely goals from unsung heroes was the difference for the midgets – they were confident and they believed in each other,” stated coach Grimes. The peewee Mountaineers won their gold medal game 8-4 over host Oakville, capping a perfect tourney in which they won all five preliminary round games. Finlay Thomson and Cam Essensa were named to the peewee all star team, Cam Essensa was also named overall peewee MVP.

respective provincial championships for field lacrosse back in late spring. Mimico did have a huge advantage at the Oakville championships in being able to draw upon the club’s Jr. A Mountaineers team for players. Those players very obvi-

ously couldn’t suit up on the actual concrete pad for the peewee and midget teams, being too old – but they sure made their presence known on the other side of the glass, cheering and supporting the Mimico youth teams at every opportunity. Jonny Grimes, who coaches

both the junior and midget teams, explained that the junior players “were a perennial contender” for an ‘A’ championship. They didn’t win it, but decided to lend their support to the club’s current crop of youth players, he said. Added Colleen Grimes, the club’s vice president of promotion and development: “The kids on the floor look up to them as Jr. A’s and knowing they were there to support them was a huge confidence booster for both teams.” This past season the Mountaineers organization moved its junior team up to Jr. A from Jr. B where it had competed for a long time. Police in north Etobicoke’s 23 Division have issued a public safety alert to spread awareness about a scam targeting the South Asian community. It is reported that people of South Asian descent have received unsolicited calls from people falsely claiming to be immigration

employees. Police allege that, during such occurrences, the caller tells the victim that their immigration status – specifically their Permanent Resident Card – is expiring and requires renewal. The caller then allegedly directs the victim to transfer large amounts of money in order to ensure their immigration status

remains valid. Toronto police advise anyone who receives such a call to confirm their immigration/residency status with Canadian Immigration and Citizenship at 1-888-242 2100 or www.cic.gc.ca or their related country of origin’s consulate.

Martin Luther Church toddler program reopens Two years after fire, benefit concert, open house being held CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Nearly two years after a fire closed the doors to its Superior Avenue facility, the Martin Luther Church Day Care is on the verge of reopening its toddler program. In celebration of that long-awaited occasion, the church is inviting residents to come out to two upcoming events – a benefit concert this Saturday to raise money for the day care’s ongoing renovations, and an open house Tuesday, Sept. 1 to explore the new-and-improved space’s upgrades. “If you would have told me in 2013 that it was going to be September 2015 before we got back up and running, I wouldn’t have believed it,” said Ulrich Karthaus, chair of the daycare board. “I have to say, though, that I’m quite happy and relieved that we have met the various challenges and overcome them, and we’re looking forward to providing our day-care services once again to toddlers.” First opened in 1970, the long-running Martin Luther Church Day Care was the creation of then-pastor Eberhard W. Schwantes. “Pastor Schwantes thought it was time for the church to contribute something to the local community and decided the best way to do that was to supply day care for families in the area,” said Karthaus, noting the church community rallied together to buy the property at 5 Superior Ave. in order to house the daycare for local Lakeshore families. “For the most part, both then and now, most of the clientele that we serve were subsidized parents.” Over the 45 years since it opened, the Martin Luther Church Day Care has cared

The Martin Luther Day Care held a playground cleanup last weekend in advance of its 5 Superior Ave. location’s reopening next month. The daycare’s toddler program has been shut down for nearly two years after a fire gutted the centre in 2013.

for countless children in its programs for toddlers and preschoolers, as well as its before- and after-school programming – both at 5 Superior and in the basement of the church, at 2379 Lake Shore Blvd. W. Then, in October 2013, on a Friday evening, an electrical fire broke out at the Superior Avenue building – gutting the daycare centre and several top-floor apartments. “There were no injuries, so in that sense, we were definitely fortunate,” Karthaus said. “The fire started on a Friday night sometime after 9 p.m., so all of the children had gone home for the weekend, thankfully. We were very glad that nobody was hurt.” Throughout the renovation process, however, many members of the Martin Luther Church community have dedicated themselves to getting the daycare back on its feet, said Iris Schweiger, the church’s president. “It’s been a long and dif-

ficult process, but it is rewarding in its own way when I see people coming together again to make this work,” she said in a statement, noting the church community’s involvement in setting up fundraising and donation accounts. All that work is now paying off, as the daycare is on the cusp of reopening its doors, Karthaus said, noting organizers have targeted the week of Sept. 7. concert Martin Luther Church, 2379 Lake Shore Blvd. W., will be hosting a benefit concert in support of the day care’s reopening Saturday, Aug. 29 at 5 p.m. Then, on Tuesday, Sept. 1, Martin Luther Church Day Care will invite the community to explore its newly renovated daycare space at 5 Superior Ave. during an open house from 5 to 7 p.m.

TTC marks 30 billion transit trips A major milestone was celebrated when it was announced this week the TTC has passed 30 billion transit trips. Long-time rider Grant Scott was chosen as the stand-in customer for the trip which was likely to have been made earlier in the month according to the TTC. Despite near-annual raises to fares, the TTC has seen steady increases in ridership for 11 straight years and will likely set another record for total trips taken in 2015. The 30 billion figure represents the number of trips taken dating back to the TTC’s inception in 1921. ZONES COMING TO THE TTC? wTRAVEL

Integration of the electronic fare system Presto with the TTC won’t be completed until the end of next year, but a prominent transit advocacy group is concerned how it could affect suburban riders. Unlike the TTC’s current

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT single-zone system, Presto users on services like GO Transit are charged higher fares based on the distance travelled. That has TTCriders worried the TTC, which relies on fares for 70 per cent of its revenue, might be enticed to establish multiple travel zones, which could disproportionately impact Scarborough, Etobicoke and North York residents who must travel further on average to get to other areas of the city. The group also notes frequent suburban transit users are more likely to have no other transportation options and would have no choice but to accept a new fare policy. more trips coming to kitchener line wgo

City could see $65M budget surplus Booming real estate sales, enthusiastic parking-tag issuance and lucky investments are combining with low social service caseloads and salary savings to potentially give Toronto $64.89 million surplus by the end of the year. That is the word from Toronto’s finance staff, who will be reporting to the Aug. 31 meeting of the city’s Budget Committee on the state of the city’s finances.

The surplus – which is projected to be dramatically lower than the $190 million surplus reported at the end of 2014 – is a result of some good fortune in the first half of the year, mitigated by some bad breaks unfolding in the latter half. Based on the good news, the city is maintaining a higher surplus, or favourable net variance, of $97.291 million. The city is riding high

with excess land transfer tax revenues ($45.97 million by the end of June) and parking ticket revenues ($5.451 million) and investment income of $15.608 million. The city is also saving on salary and benefit under-expenditures and a lower caseload for employment and social services and capital and corporate financing along with lower social housing subsidies. – David Nickle

Home safety tips for seniors Many seniors today enjoy the ability to live comfortably in their homes. With the right supports and assistance, such as the care provided through the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC), the elderly are able remain at home for as long as possible. While living at home is the desire of many seniors, doing so often comes with challenges. Healthrelated limitations as well as the very real possibility of injury have consequences for those who are of an advanced age. Fortunately, there are some simple things that can be done to decrease the possibility of injury or difficulty at home. 1. Good Lighting As we age, our eyesight often becomes compromised. Medical issues such as glaucoma and cataracts make it difficult to see as clearly as we once did. Seniors often have difficulty seeing in dim light, so make sure that your elderly loved one has adequately bright lighting in their homes. In doing so, you will decrease the likelihood of an unexpected fall or stumble. 2. Non-Slip Flooring While hardwood floors may look nice, they are a frequent cause of slips and falls by older people. As well, tiled or floors that are covered with throw rugs can also pose a safety hazard. To decrease the possibility of falls, make sure to install carpet or nonslip flooring. Also, consider the use of treads on stairs or

high-traffic areas. 3. Caregiver Support Having someone look out for the elderly is a surefire way of assuring that they remain safe. If you know of a neighbour, family member, or friend who is in need of assistance, offer to lend a hand. This may include helping with chores around the home that may be difficult or potentially unsafe for an older person. 4. Medication Management Many seniors have various medications that need to be taken on a daily basis, which can lead to error. Taking the wrong medications or forgetting whether the correct dosage has been taken is a very real possibility for the elderly. Keep your loved ones safe by the simple use of pill boxes or similar supports. Also consid-

er a simple checklist or tracking system that can be filled out daily. 5. Assistive Devices Seniors are often in need of assistive devices in order to be mobile within their homes, as well as outside. Wheelchairs, walkers, the use of medic-alerttype tools and similar items can make a considerable difference in the lives of those who need them. The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre works with a variety of companies that supply these types of items to seniors in need. Contact the CCAC for details. For more information about supports for seniors, contact the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) at (416) 506-9888 or visit www.healthcareathome.ca
