Teen has minor injuries after falling off parade float Help give people a Christmas in Etobicoke with 23 Division CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com
Police say charges are “highly unlikely” to be laid in connection with a mishap at the Lake Shore Santa Claus Parade over the weekend that sent a 13-year-old girl to hospital. The girl, who fell off of a float during the Saturday, Dec. 5 parade and was subsequently run over, was taken to hospital with “non-lifethreatening” injuries, said Toronto
police Const. Victor Kwong. Kim McKinnon from Toronto EMS confirmed the teen patient was transported to a local hospital with only “minor injuries” after paramedics were called to the site of the incident on Lake Shore Boulevard West during the Saturday’s parade. Kwong said no arrests were made at the time of the incident, nor any charges laid against the driver of the float the girl was riding on and
that then struck her. “Apparently she just fell. It wasn’t like there was an abrupt stop or anything, she literally fell off the float,” he said. “So, although things are still ongoing, we highly doubt there will be any charges.” Police will, however, confer with parade organizers to increase safety measures moving forward: “It’s one of the things where, because there’s a safety issue, we’ll work with the organizers,” Kwong added.

Clinic will help people overcome addiction Three page Q&A with Councillor Mark Grimes says it’s a medical clinic focusing on addiction and related mental health CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com The mystery of the rumoured “methadone clinic” at Lake Shore and Sixth Street has been solved – Renew Medical Clinics has taken up operation at the site. While Julia Birinyi, the manager of operations at the 2898 Lake Shore Blvd. W. clinic, declined an interview with The Guardian, she explained the clinic’s function in a threepage Q&A with Mark Grimes following a Nov. 16 sit-down with the Etobicoke-Lakeshore councillor. “We are a medical clinic staffed by duly licensed physicians focusing on addiction and related mental health,” she said, noting that methadone is just one of the Health Canada-approved medications her clinic’s patients may be prescribed to treat pain and/ or chemical dependency on opioid substances, such as oxycodone, morphine, Percocet or codeine, or others. “Patients with addiction and related mental health problems may be prescribed methadone or other medications such as anti-depressants by their doctor after a thorough evaluation and laboratory analysis of their urine. The patient is then free to take that prescription for methadone to a pharmacy of their choice to be dispensed the medication, just like the prescription for any other medication.” The Renew Clinic, Birinyi clarified, does not currently have pharmacy services on-site and is not currently dispensing any medications, methadone included. Grimes, who was also unavailable for comment as of The Guardian’s press deadline Wednesday, first addressed his constituents’ concerns with the clinic with his Etobicoke

York Community Council colleagues at a meeting in November, when rumours of a “methadone clinic” opening in his ward were still unconfirmed. During that Nov. 10 meeting, Grimes gained support for a motion calling on Municipal Licensing and Standards to review a Region of Peel bylaw that requires such clinics be licensed, with the intent of “enacting the same or a similar bylaw in the City of Toronto immediately.” His motion, which was unanimously supported by west-end councillors, also sought an educational component/community consultation process under any such bylaw. “These are badly needed facilities, I’m sure. To stop people from seeking treatment would be wrong,” he

said at the time. “But at the same time, (this rumoured methadone clinic) is very close to Seventh Street Junior School, so people need to be educated as to what might be going on there.” Hoping to quell some of those fears, Birinyi explained in her Q&A with Grimes that Renew has operated three
other mental health and addiction clinics at locations in Mississauga, Cambridge and Leamington for the past twoand-a-half to four-and-a-half years – all with no troubles. “We have not had a single informal or formal complaint, or even a concern from the neighbourhood or city, in any of these locations,” she wrote. “Our clinic in Mississauga is, indeed, near a very large school on Cawthra Road, and our clinic in Leamington is located at the most major intersection of the small town.” Additionally, all of Renew’s patients – most of whom Birinyi said are dependent on painkillers originally prescribed to them by doctors – are required to sign a “clinic agreement” before any services are rendered.
“The agreement, which is detailed, requires that the client refrain from disruptive or illegal behaviour in the clinic and surrounding vicinity. As well, it requires that the client refrain from loitering in the neighbourhood of the clinic,” she explained, noting that if the agreement is violated, the client is first given a warning, and if the behaviour repeats, the client is then discharged from the facility’s care. “In the years operating our clinics and serving hundreds of clients, we have had very few people who actually violated the agreement.” In closing, Birinyi defended the Renew Clinic and its patients. “The overwhelming majority of our patients do not fit the stereotypical image of a disheveled, disorderly, transient person,” she wrote, noting they look like patients of any other medical clinic. “It is rather disheartening that they get subjected to this kind of negative prejudice, in a pluralistic and inclusive society as we expect to enjoy in Canada.” Her Renew Clinic team, she said, is simply trying to provide “a much-needed” medical service to these patients, who are often subject to an unfortunate amount of societal “blame and stigma”. “This stigma presents a significant barrier to their rehabilitation, and for their return to normal functioning,” she wrote. “Patients with such disorders are suffering from an illness, just like any other medical illness. These people deserve and have the right to be seen by a physician in a location similar to other doctors’ offices.”

Property levy tax shows responsible financial planning

oronto has been in fiscal denial, off and on, since it was amalgamated in 1998. That was when Mel Lastman was elected mayor, promising to freeze property taxes for the first three years of the new mega-city. He pulled it off, but not in a fiscally responsible way. Rather than finding internal efficiencies and cutting services, most of the city’s financial problems were deferred down the line in the service of a tax freeze. When David Miller took over two terms later, the city and council did better, but it was a tooth-andnail fight to implement the land transfer tax and vehicle registration tax, which let council get away with more minor efficiencies and modest property tax increases thanks to a booming real estate market. Those taxes and a municipal workers strike sent Rob Ford into the mayor’s office and while that regime made some mostly unpalatable cuts, once again our view ambitious spending and timid revenue-seeking put Toronto back in the hole. For a time, it looked as though the reconstruction of the Gardiner Expressway, SmartTrack, the Scarborough subway and countless other enhancements were going to bankrupt us all. That’s why we’re happy to see that Tory has effectively abandoned his promise to keep property tax increases at or below the rate of inflation. It’s not that we think higher taxes are a good idea. But the alternative – planning to build a city the size of Toronto on an unsustainable fiscal plan – is folly. Tory’s plan to charge a 0.5 per cent a year levy to build transit and housing is at least a step toward erasing that folly. The tax increase is relatively small: $13 a year for the average homeowner, for five years, on top of whatever inflationary increase they see on their tax bill. By itself, it is neither a great burden, nor the complete solution to Toronto’s needs. There will have to be more revenue grabs. But that’s for another day. For now, we can at least applaud that the days of denial seem to be done.

Mayor John Tory has defied early expectations when it comes to governing a complex Toronto John Tory can be a tough mayor to interview. That’s not to say that our mayor is evasive, or dishonest, or, like the last one to hold the job, openly hostile to journalistic prying. Tory is none of those things. The problem, rather, is the opposite: Tory thinks aloud, considering all points of view and in the end, states nearly all of them – in addition to agreeing with the premise of the question in case that hadn’t come up in one of the other answers. It can be frustrating work, trying to parse the mayor’s views from all that. A lead becomes a multiple choice question. From that, one might conclude that the mayor is simply unprincipled – and by a narrowly political definition of the word, that might be so. Tory does not hold fast with the principles of one
david nickle the city faction or another of our political spectrum. He might have done so in the past. But now, Tory seems content to take his pick. This he has demonstrated ably over his first year in office. For a time, it seemed as though Tory might be of a piece with council’s right-wing intelligentsia: he championed a costly rebuild of the Gardiner Expressway favoured by Conservative members of council, and held fast on the costly Scarborough subway for which former mayor Rob Ford took credit. He has sung the praises of the private sector and made jokes about the folly of big government as well as any right-wing pol might be expected to.
But as the year has gone on, he’s defied those expectations. After talking with business leaders and sport boosters, he backed the city away from another Olympic bid. He used another meeting with the blue-blooded business crowd at the Economic Club of Canada to unveil plans for an annual tax hike to pay for a major round of construction and repair of public affordable housing and transit infrastructure. He flew to Paris right after that, to huddle with world leaders trying to find ways to battle, halt and possibly reverse climate change and when he came back, he announced plans to help Toronto recycle more garbage, consume less energy and get around on foot and on bicycles. This is not the sort of thing you’d have expected
from a guy named Tory. Now some of this might be written off as evidence of a shifting of the political winds. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals came to power on a wave of progressive policies and right-wing repudiation. I would buy that more easily if I hadn’t been exposed so early and often to the push-me-pull-you dynamic of Tory’s psyche. And while it’s a frustrating psyche to try and codify, it might actually turn out to be a healthy one when it comes to governing a big, complex place like Toronto, where public mood and social reality can shift in a heartbeat. Vision, clear and consistent and predictable, might well have had its day.

The annual program, which has been running for about 22 years, sees volunteer Kiwanis members decked out in Santa hats and bearing gifts of longdistance calling cards visit with local seniors in order to help them connect with family members overseas. Kiwanian Laurie Lyle brought her seven-year-old son along to Kipling Acres Sunday to help facilitate the Festive Phone Calls program at the north Etobicoke seniors’ home. “It was a wonderful feeling for us to be able to connect these people with their relatives in faraway lands during the holiday season,” Lyle said of the program, noting that she, her son and prospective Kiwanis Club member Kaityln Davis were able to help about 10 Kipling Acres residents
connect with family members all around the world. “There was one couple that called Italy to speak to the husband’s sister. Now the wife had a very distinct Scottish accent, but she got on the phone and all of a sudden out of nowhere she was speaking Italian,” she laughed. “Listening to them, obviously I had no idea what they were saying, but it was clear just how thrilled they were...even if it was a different language they were speaking, we could really see on their faces the impact those phone calls were making.” Down in south Etobicoke at Lakeshore Lodge, meanwhile, Kiwanians Jim Simpson and Ben Sharma helped eight elderly residents get in touch with relatives from “as far away as Australia and Sweden, and as close by as Etobicoke” on Saturday. “The seniors we helped were really happy about their phone calls,” said Simpson, a Kiwanian who has helped out with the club’s Festive Phone Calls program for the last four years. “It was heartwarming to watch. The lady who called Australia was on the phone for nearly an hour catching up with family, then we had

another lady call her sister, who she hadn’t talked to in a year. It was great to see.” The Kiwanis Club of Toronto covers all costs of the program – including the purchase of long-distance calling cards, as well as treats of cookies and holiday greeting cards for elderly participants of the program. “It doesn’t cost us an enormous amount to do this, but just arranging the logistics is so appreciated, because a lot of these folks don’t even have phones in their rooms,” said Lyle, a “full-time volunteer” who also donates her time to the Boys and Girls Club and Humbercrest Public School. “We simply bring them to an office, dial the number for them and get their relative on the phone on the phone for them. And for that, they’re so appreciative – and you can see it in the expressions on their faces as they’re talking. It’s wonderful.”

ith winter cycling on the rise, it’s no secret a major concern is dealing with the elements, but maybe not as you’d think. “What people complain about winter riding isn’t that it’s too cold, but that it’s too hot,” said avid winter cyclist Jared Kolb. “People have a tendency to get overheated.” In his role as executive director of Cycle Toronto, Kolb has helped to push for more bike infrastructure and increase education and training for riders. This year, Cycle Toronto organized several winter cycling workshops at various public library branches. Of late, Kolb has noticed an increase in the amount of coldweather riders queued up at traffic lights. “We’re seeing quite a remarkable change happening,” he said. If you’re thinking about pedalling in the winter, beyond dressing in layers to stay cool and ventilated, there are some things you should know, and Kolb agreed to share some tips on how best to ride safely in winter. GET OUT OF THE BIKE LANE In the past, the city routinely neglected to clear snow from bike lanes on a timely basis. But that’s changing thanks to much prodding by Cycle Toronto and other groups. Last year, Toronto City Council approved $650,000 for an annual snow clearing program dedicated to hightraffic bike lanes that have an average ridership of 2,000 cyclists per day. Priority routes include Harbord Street, College Street, Shaw Street, Sherbourne Street, Wellesley Street as well as Richmond Street and Adelaide Street. If a bike lane isn’t cleared, Kolb suggests using smaller arterial roads as an alternate route, especially if they’re already plowed and salted. He is “cautiously optimistic” more attention paid for clearing bike lanes will result in a marked uptick in winter cycling. According to recent city statistics, only 10 per cent of Toronto cyclists go on to ride in the winter – a far cry from Copenhagen, Denmark, where 70 per cent continue riding no matter the weather conditions.

Where the cold is most likely to hit while pedalling is exposed fingers. Having frozen fingers impedes one’s reaction time, which is particularly dangerous on busy city roads jammed with traffic. Kolb suggests investing in a warm pair of gloves, winter boots and a skull cap, which can snugly fit right under a bike helmet.
More than in other seasons, your ride will accumulate grit and salt, which can corrode chains and the finer parts of your bike. Kolb recommends a thorough cleaning at least once every two weeks. KNOW YOUR LIMITS
FAT VERSUS SKINNY TIRES There’s a “great debate” taking place among cyclists on what tires to use in the winter. As Kolb sees it, both fat and skinny tires have their benefits as well as their drawbacks. Fat tires provide better traction, but the skinny versions allow for greater ease when cutting through a pile of snow. Kolb’s winter bike, an “old clunker with a pretty low centre of gravity”, works better with the thicker

types of road users. For cyclists it can be particularly dangerous, but Kolb recommends treating such potentially hazardous conditions like black ice and gravel by maintaining a straight

Toronto’s winters are usually only harsh for about a month, with the last two years being the exception, so there’s plenty of opportunity all season long to enjoy a nice, crisp ride, Kolb says.

Toll lanes coming to QEW first The province is moving ahead, albeit slowly, on High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes. Beginning next summer, the existing High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV ) lanes QEW between Guelph and Oakville will have tolls, Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca announced this week. The carpool lanes will remain free to anyone traveling with at least one passenger, but single-occupant vehicles will also be able to legally use the lanes by purchasing a special permit. The pilot project is expected to pave the way for more HOT lanes on Ontario highways, but likely not until 2021. Road tolls advocacy group Transport Futures called it a start, but said the modest implementation plan might lead to “underwhelming results”. PLANNED SUBWAY CLOSURES by ttc wNO

Competing requests to rename an Eglinton Crosstown stop in Scarborough were turned down by Metrolinx, the provincial agency in charge of building the light-rail line along Eglinton Avenue. Metrolinx rejected a request by members of the TTC board to rename the Lebovic Avenue stop in honour of Karim Hakimi, the founder of Hakim Optical. The only problem is an existing naming policy
preventing the naming of infrastructure after living persons, and Hakimi is still going strong at 82. Metrolinx also turned down a request from Centennial College to rename the Lebovic stop after the college’s Ashtonbee campus on the basis it’s not directly located on Eglinton. WI-FI available AT SUBWAY STATIONS wMORE
You can now get free Wi-Fi access at four more subway stations, the TTC announced last week. The TCONNECT service is now available at Christie, Bathurst, Sherbourne and Castle Frank stations. These join the stations located on the lower U portion of the subway line. BAI Canada, which is carrying out the Wi-Fi installation, has pledged to connect every TTC station by 2017.

Inter-faith gathering stands in unity with Muslims All urged to sign statement of unity celebrating nation’s diversity EMANUELA CAMPANELLA etg@insidetoronto.com More than 200 people from different faiths gathered at a Toronto mosque Saturday, to show their solidarity against anti-Muslim sentiments. After the Nov. 13 Paris terror attacks that killed 129 people and left hundreds wounded, there were a few hate crimes targeting Muslims. On Nov. 16, two men physically attacked a woman wearing a hijab while hurling racial slurs when she was picking up her children from school in North York. And on Nov. 19, anti-Muslim graffiti with the message, “F*** Muslim girl”, was found on a GO Transit train at Sherbourne Station. On Nov. 14, a mosque was deliberately set on fire in Peterborough. To respond to the increase in hate crimes, Toronto faith leaders and politicians came together to speak
out against such acts and stand together with the Muslim community at the Islamic Info and Dawah Centre at Bloor and Dufferin. The event was hosted by Faith in the City, an antipoverty organization aimed at strengthening community voices against intolerance in Toronto. Men wearing kippahs and thwabs, religious garments, spoke with one another while women in hijabs spoke to women wearing crosses around their necks. “There’s so much craziness and madness going on in the world around us,” said Ilyas Ally, a member of the mosque and event organizer. “We’re constantly going from one incident to the next and sometimes it’s beyond our borders, but then sometimes it has ripple effects right here in our city,” Ally said. “And so with all of that negativity, it’s so nice that we have a

positive event like this where all of us can come together and hopefully learn from each other and re-commit to working together for a better society.” The leader of the mosque, Imam Shabir Ally, also spoke to the crowd, asking all Muslims to denounce the recent terror attacks around the world and
make it loud and clear that the violence has nothing to do with Islam. “They (terrorists) have misappropriated some of the teachings of the Qur’an. They have misconstrued this and are using it for their own political and other objectives,” he said. “We think they are mis-
guided and it is the responsibility of persons like myself, who are studying the Qur’an and Islamic history, to help those young men and women to see where they are misguided and bring them back to the right path,” he added. With rabbis, pastors, imams and politicians speaking to the crowd, the message of the night was clear: everyone stands united against hate crimes. “Any type of anti-Muslim sentiment, any type of hate crime, any type of discrimination is completely unacceptable. Not only in this community, but all communities right across Canada,” Davenport MP Julie Dzerowicz said. “I truly believe from the bottom of my heart that Canadians are united in our shared values, in our commitment to freedom and to equality. ong-term care experts in Ontario are hopeful the Liberal government’s “sunny ways” will shed light on a national dementia strategy. Nearly 750,000 Canadians are already living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. That number is expected to increase to 1.4 million by 2031, according to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. There is currently no national plan in place to deal with this imminent crisis. There is also a need for funding services such as music therapy, transportation and in-home assistance. One major issue brought up at the consultation is the lack of collaboration between health-care professionals, primary caregivers and community support centres. Catherine Grenaway of the Etobicoke Services for Seniors said there is increasing demand for support in the community. “Until there is a cure...it’s going to be an agency like ours that is going to try and help clients through this very difficult journey ahead,” Grenaway said. s the population ages, more Ontarians are become afflicted by the growing dementia crisis spreading across the globe. For one Toronto resident, being her husband’s primary caregiver has taken its toll. “I never have a good day anymore. I have been robbed of a life, my husband’s life, my partner of 53 years. He has Alzheimer’s disease,” Linda Grossman told the crowd gathered at Etobicoke Collegiate Institute Nov. 26. More than 50 people came together to listen to Grossman’s story and discuss Ontario’s provincial dementia strategy. Etobicoke Centre MPP Yvan Baker and Halton MPP Indira Naidoo-Harris were among the listeners. “I do everything for my husband. I take out his clothes, I put (tooth) paste on this toothbrush, I cut finger and toe nails. When is there time for me to live? Who will help me?” she said with a stern but shaky voice.
A woman from the audience wiped away her tears. In Ontario, Grossman’s situation is a reality for many others. One in 10 seniors is living with some form of dementia. That’s nearly 200,000 people over the age of 65. That number is expected to increase to 300,000 by the end of 2017. In response, the Ontario government has started a consultation process to put together an overall strategy for dealing with an aging population. This will include expanding access points for patients and their families by supporting the implementation of 25 Memory Clinics across Ontario. Furthermore, the strategy will include the right to time off work for patients and caregivers, as well as access to training and respite programs. As for Grossman, although many of her husband’s memories are gone, as a caregiver she made an appeal to those at the consultation meeting. “Please help. Please don’t let me down. Please listen and hear me. Don’t forget about me. I want to enjoy a nice day. Provide me with a small measure of hope,” she said.

City’s hands tied in rectifying ‘over-development’ >>>from page 1 24-storey towers; a 99-unit, eight-storey seniors building with 3,331 square metres of retail commercial space on the two lower levels; and 72, threestorey stacked townhouses. During Monday’s meeting, Urban Capital’s consultants explained that those plans have since been significantly downsized – including the removal of the 10-storey tower and the shortening of the 24-storey tower down to 21 storeys. “The total gross floor area of all the buildings was previously just under 520,000 square feet and it’s now been reduced down to just under 400,000 square feet – a reduction of 117,000 square feet,” explained Rudy Wallman, the project’s architect. “So, as you would expect, the units have also been reduced from 628 units down to 391 – a reduction of 237 units.” Campbell said those changes to the proposal came about as a result of community feedback from a consultation held in January, in addition
to subsequent talks between city planning staff and the applicant. “During that January community meeting, we had quite a lot of people who expressed concerns about the density and the height – particularly the density, with it being over 600 units,” he said of Urban Capital’s original proposal, noting his support for the revised plans. For many residents in attendance at Monday’s meeting, however, lingering concerns regarding the project’s density, heights and especially traffic impacts remain intact, despite its revised scope. One longtime resident who lives east of the proposed development at 4170 Dundas St. W., recalled the traffic chaos created when the nearby Kingsway Mills Shopping Centre was first built. “When the plaza went in, the business owners had to hire police officers to handle the heavy traffic coming in and out of there – and that was only a little mall,” he said, noting
as Urban Capital’s proposed “over-development” of the site because a Dundas Street West Avenue Study carried out in 2006 grants special exemptions to the rear portion of the RONA site. “These lands, where the RONA store currently sits, were deemed a special case in the study area, due to their large size and location deep within the development block, adjacent to the railway corridor and away from existing neighbourhoods,” explained city planner Jill Hogan. The rear portion of the site, where Urban Capital has proposed its 21-storey residential tower, is covered under a Site and Area Specific Policy (SASP) in the city’s Official Plan, she added. “This policy specifically addresses that portion of the site, stating that there should be an independent review process for these lands due to their distance from Dundas Street West, which provides the opportunity for greater building height at the rear of the

It’s not something that I think any of our residents want to see, but unfortunately we have to deal with the cards that we’ve been dealt. And the Avenue Study is what it is.”

The ML Ready Mix facility at 29 Judson St. is on the south side of a residential street near Mimico GO Transit station, across from a park, a seniors’ residence, and houses. ML’s appeal concerned conditions related to the calculation of time intervals for truck arrivals, hours of operation, the number of aggregate trucks allowed per hour, and record-keeping concerning noise complaints. Wilkins dismissed ML’s appeals on all counts. The company’s notice of appeal argued restricting the number of trucks by a rolling “per 60-minute period” rather than “per hour” is “untenable, logistically impossible to implement and appears to unfairly target the appellant.” Wilkins disagreed. He a r g u e d t h e “p e r 60-minute period” will help address noise emissions’ adverse impacts. “The amendments will ensure that truck arrivals and departures will be reasonably distributed over time so that noise emissions will not exceed the NPC-300 limits,” wrote Wilkins, refer-
ring to the Ministry of the Environment’s new noise guideline. John Alati, the company’s lawyer, further argued the language of the condition “is inconsistent with that used in other ECAs that regulate concrete batching facilities in Ontario, and is novel.” emission limits Wilkins argued priority must be placed on ensuring emission limits address the characteristics of the site’s operation. “Conditions must be tailored to the characteristics of the site, which in this case includes addressing the noise and potential loss of enjoyment of normal use of property impacts on local residents,” Wilkins wrote. Alati’s comments on Wilkins’ ruling were not available prior to Guardian deadline. Company officials bought the property in 2002. Initially, it operated as a lumber yard prior to starting a cement b a t c h i n g o p e ra t i o n i n 2007. Residents have long complained of tractor-trailers and dump trucks becoming commonplace metres from their homes, and expressed concerns about dust from the facility and its health
impact. Joanne Cortellessa, a presenter at the hearing who lives adjacent to ML, expressed encouragement at Wilkins’ ruling. “We are extremely pleased with this decision as it obligates ML to shut operations at 7 p.m. during weekdays,” she said. “This has been going on for years so it’s nice to see closure and finally have some respect for the law-abiding citizens.” Dan Irwin, another presenter who lives directly across the street from ML, said he was pleased with the decision, but not with the seven months it took to render it after hearings ended. Irwin expressed disappointment Wilkins did not address residents’ frustrations with the company’s operations. “Mr. Wilkins makes no reference to the adverse effects on the community, especially 384 trucks per day permitted, nor does he mention the site visit to see the operation firsthand,” Irwin said of Wilkins’ visit to the company site in April. The Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change issues ECAs, which cover emissions and discharges related to air, noise, waste and sewage.

Celebrate Christmas in Mimico The fourth annual Christmas in Mimico Community Carol Concert makes its return on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 3 p.m., featuring a variety classic sing-along carols, moving choral pieces, and uplifting new takes on the Christmas standards. This year’s event, which takes place at the Mimico Presbyterian Church, 119 Mimico Ave., will feature performances by the Mimico Children’s Choir, Mimico Presbyterian Church Choir, and Mimico Baptist Youth Group, along with local professional musicians contributing their talents with solos and duets. “This concert has become an annual highlight for our community,” Mary Bella, president of the Mimico Children’s Choir, said in a statement. “We bring together local musicians of all ages to share music of the season. It’s such a joy to see it grow from year to year, and the children’s singing especially never fails to bring tears to my eyes. For me that’s when Christmas really begins.” While the concert features a variety of songs sung by a variety of voices, all of the performing groups have a

Happiness@School Project takes laughter to a new level Sixteen budding comedians from North Kipling Junior Middle School made their on-stage debuts at a special Stand-Up Showcase event this week. The Grade 7 participants who took to the stage during the Monday showcase spent three months preparing for the gig by participating in The Happiness@School Project – a “joyful learning experience” that was first launched at North Kipling JMS in 2013. The one-of-a-kind program, which was created by author Sue Stephenson, promotes mental health and well-being literacy through “positive psychology, happiness, laughter, humour – and stand-up comedy.” The Happiness@School Project saw Stephenson, along with professional comedians Kyle Woolven and Marc Hallworth, run a series of workshops with North Kipling JMS students in the Grade 7 classrooms of teachers Doug Cornell, Shannon Patterson and John Morrone. Three months of “playful work” and coaching later, the 16 participating students performed the standup acts they wrote themselves at Monday’s Stand-Up Showcase. “This is not a contest and is

Monitoring mental health for today’s adolescents Mental illness and addiction impact people in many different ways. With one in five Canadians experiencing a mental health or addictions problem, most of us know someone affected. Mental health and addiction issues range from depression and anxiety to substance abuse disorders. With 70 per cent of mental health problems and illnesses beginning during childhood or adolescence, it is important to stay engaged in your child’s behaviour and consult with someone that can help. All Ontario Community Care Access Centres (CCACs) have teams of dedicated community mental health and addictions nurses (MHAN) who are helping students. Working on the front lines in schools, these specialized CCAC nurses focus on the success of students with mental health and/or addictions issues, helping them thrive at school, remain in school, or successfully transition back to school.
“My amazing community care access centre mental health and addiction nurse changed my life. Shauna was one of the first real supports that I had. I could not have done without her. I was struggling. She opened a new world to me,” says 20-year-old Maria who has a borderline personality disorder. Maria attempted suicide three years ago and has turned her life around. Today Maria is in her second year of a third-year child and youth worker program at George Brown College and graduated first year on the Dean’s List. Shauna explains, “I have been inspired by Maria who has dedicated a large portion of her time to fighting the stigma that exists for people living with mental illness.”
Facts about youth and mental health • Ontario school boards indicate that
the
educators rank mental health and substance use as a critical issue for school systems. • 15 to 21% of Ontario’s youth have at least one mental health disorder, however very few seek services for their problems. • Approximately 25% of students with a psychiatric disorder drop out of school, accounting for 14% of all high school drop-outs. • Two-thirds of youth with substance use issues have a co-occurring mental health problem.
Tips for parents from mental anger and stress. • Become familiar with the services available at your child’s school and let your teen know it is okay to seek help from a counsellor, health care professional or a trusted adult. • Praise and celebrate your teen and
health and addiction nurses: • Communication is key - ask about fears and concerns, check in often and respect opinions. • Help your teen explore solutions and find acceptable ways of working through

Information sharing and creating dialogues that frame the challenges and opportunities of living with special needs in an accurate and unbiased manner, can help to minimize the stigma felt by people with special needs, he said. “But the single most important thing that I think we can do to overcome stigma around special needs is community building,” Sivill added, noting stigma emanates from “distance and difference”. “When you have those two things, you are priming yourself for creating a stigmatizing
environment, because stigma survives and thrives when people are isolated.” Community, he added, is broadly defined as “a group of people united by a common purpose” – “therefore, by definition, if we can inspire a common purpose among people, we are going to go a long way to negating or greatly minimizing the impact of special needs-related stigma,” he said. At Hollycrest Middle School, staff and students have already embraced many of the stigma solutions suggested in Sivill’s presentation in order to ensure that those students in the school’s Intensive Support Program (ISP) feel safe and welcome, said principal Boris Stoikos and vice-principal Mervi Salo. Out of Hollycrest’s 364 students in grades 6 to 8, Stoikos said about 30 attend one of three ISP classrooms, while 156 are gifted athletes in the school’s High Performer Program and 156 attend regular curriculum classes. “One of the things I really love about this school is how the students – regardless of what stream they’re in – work together,” Salo said. “There’s just a great sense of community here at the school.”

How do we overcome the stigma surrounding students with special needs? According to lawyer and inclusivity advocate Devon Sivill – who acted as guest speaker at Special Education forum hosted by Etobicoke Centre Trustee Chris Glover last week – the best way to go about eliminating stigma is through sharing information, creating a dialogue and building a sense of community in our schools. The root causes of stigma, Sivill explained to parents and educators of children with special needs who gathered at Hollycrest Middle School for the Nov. 24 forum, is fear, misinformation and apathy. “The fact remains that when we’re afraid of a situation, we will inevitably react to it in a different way than we would to a situation that we’re comfortable with...” Sivill explained. “In conjunction with fear, unfortunately we are also often the victims of a tide of misinformation available to the public concerning experiences of those living with disabilities.” Much of that misinformation, Sivill continued, is fed to this generation’s “mediasaturated” ‘children via the television, the Internet and smartphones. “Our kids are bombarded with messaging about any number of things, including ideas of people with special needs and their limitations...” Sivill said, noting that while one in seven people has a special need, they are “conspicuously absent” from popular media. “And when we do appear, it’s often in roles that are stereotypical or degrading. My point here being that, whether through exposure to inaccurate media or antiquated views of the challenges faced
