he was born a century ago in Hamilton, Ont., founded the visual effects department at Famous PEOPLE Players (FPP) and still shows up to work every day with a smile on her face. Who is Mary Thornton? Correct! On Saturday, proud Canadian and host of the popular quiz show Jeopardy! Alex Trebek flew in from Hollywood to be the master of ceremonies during Thornton’s 100th birthday celebration at FPP. The beloved matriarch of the black light theatre company walked in shining brighter than the red sequins on her scarf. Camera flashes and video crews captured her every move as she greeted patrons and friends – a civic celebrity walking the packed dining room’s red carpet. “I don’t know what all the fuss is about,” Thornton said, humbly. “There are a lot of people like me. They’re out there working and doing all kinds of nice things that are overlooked all the time.” Her modesty and empathy are just a couple traits that warrant the fuss. The demure dynamo has shared cocktails with the likes of Liberace and Paul Newman, and worked as an opera singer and couturier before she started crafting peculiar puppets and props at FPP in 1974. Forty-one years later, she continues to work full time, doing the laundry, answering phones and helping out around the

Candid snapshots of her embracing illustrious people from her past and the dazzling neon characters she brought to life with her own two hands throughout the years left no dry eye in the room. A life-sized puppet of Alex Trebek opened the show by quizzing the audience on Thornton’s accomplishments. “This person gave birth to daughter Diane Dupuy and taught her how to shake people upside down in order to get the money from their pockets,” grilled the likeness, voiced by the real Trebek. After uproarious laughter, the audience unanimously answered, “Mary Thornton.” Dupuy has been working alongside her mother since she founded the company and plans on following in her footsteps. “I’m not going

to stop working,” she said. “I don’t feel I am working. I’m doing my life’s calling.” She said a Thorntonbased puppet would likely be an octopus because she does so many different things. Throughout the afternoon, the letter C became an obvious theme. Dupuy debuted the children’s book she wrote in tribute of her mother called “The Magic of the Cs,” based on Thornton’s theory that the key to a rich life lies in that single consonant. Throughout the whimsically illustrated pages, Mary the Tree teaches three children about the importance of creating, commitment, consequence, courage, change and comedy. Players on the FPP stage took time to give thanks for her kindness and the lessons she has passed onto them over the years. Trebek applauded FPP for giving people with special needs the chance to thrive and was happy to take part in the festivities. “What better way to combine my support for the company with honouring Mary on her 100th birthday? She’s older than a lot of countries,” he laughed. When asked for his advice on living a fulfilling life, Trebek unintentionally stuck with the C motif. “Be curious,” he said. The day was filled with celebration, cheer and congratulations. Thornton continues to inspire from C to shining C. She can now add perhaps the most impressive one of all to her already remarkable biography. Centenarian.

T.O. politicians know the price of a garbage strike

N

othing makes Toronto angrier than a transit strike. Well, almost nothing: transit strikes made Torontonians angry enough that in 2011 Toronto council asked the provincial government to declare the Toronto Transit Commission an essential service – same as police and firefighters – so we would never be troubled by wholesale transit service denial again. In response to the 2009, 40-day garbage strike, Torontonians did something that was arguably even more radical, and elected Rob Ford mayor. The lack of garbage collection for more than a month that summer infuriated residents. Parks were filled with stinking bags of garbage that only got stinkier in the heat, and the only thing worse than hauling garbage there was keeping it festering in the yard. our view Toronto may well be heading for another garbage strike in Less impactful just a few weeks. But the city’s strategy in dealing with its two job action if unions has made that eventuality less likely. unions strike It was a strategy developed under former deputy mayor Doug Holyday during Rob Ford’s otherwise tumultuous term of office. Rather than let negotiations poke along until the warm weather, Holyday and the city’s negotiating team set the strike deadline clock ticking in December and pushed hard until the end. The result? No strike, but a negotiated settlement. The only workers who walked off the job were from the library, and that strike was over in the blink of an eye. Will it be the same in 2016? In some ways, the city is in an even stronger position this time than last because, since then, Toronto successfully expanded its contracted out garbage collection to about half the city. So if garbage workers do walk off the job, only Torontonians east of Yonge Street will be impacted. And unless the last half of the winter is truly balmy, the smell won’t be that bad either. That’s a real incentive to CUPE Local 416 and Local 79 to make a deal, and probably offer up concessions to the city negotiators, to avoid a long and possibly not impactful job action. With all that said, the city could well be shut down later in the winter, with not just outside garbage collectors, but also unionized inside workers. And even without the stink... that eventuality will make everybody more than a little twitchy. Let’s hope that nobody does anything rash.

Toronto’s half-imagined transit future is not all bad Whatever you may think of the details, you’ve got to hand it to Toronto’s planning department and chief planner Jennifer Keesmaat for this achievement: the most completely imagined transit plan in recent memory. There was one other: the OneCity Plan that former TTC chair Karen Stintz stitched together with the help of Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker that, in 2013, simply stitched together every dream project that caught their attention and put it on a map. But that one, delivered to council in 2013, could barely stand up to a stiff breeze. The plan that Keesmaat has put together and is completing is made of sterner stuff. The plan to make a one-stop subway crossing the gulf between Kennedy station and the Scarborough Town Centre is justified using economic development metrics rather than on a measure of local transit. The extended

david nickle the city Eglinton RT deals with the local transit needs along with a multi-station SmartTrack line running parallel. There will be more light rail in the west end, planners decreed, having looked with some rigour at Mayor John Tory’s SmartTrack plan through Etobicoke and pronounced heavy rail there to be impractical. The light rail would provide more stops and therefore more localized service as it makes its way to Mississauga and the airport. As was reported last week, meanwhile, a downtown relief line coursing south from Pape station at Danforth and along Queen Street East past Toronto City Hall would deal handily with the growing congestion at the Bloor/ Yonge subway interchange. The detailed justification of that plan will have to

wait until Toronto planners actually release the leaked report later in the spring, but the plan has a sense to it: Queen Street is already a busy streetcar route and Nathan Phillips Square is a focal point for the city. So: a downtown relief line, a SmartTrack only slightly truncated, more light rail and a nominal subway in Scarborough. If all that could somehow be built, to the specifications of the planners...well, Toronto would be in pretty fine shape. That might be a trick. There are engineering problems to overcome, financial hurdles to beat and the raw uncertainty of fickle Toronto politics. Odds are good that some or all of this well-imagined future will not manifest. More likely, it will be some of it. Two elements of this plan are particularly vulnerable: the one-stop subway to the Scarborough Town Centre and SmartTrack itself. In the

case of the former, the costs remain high to send trains to service a single stop. In the case of the latter, the realities of geography and engineering may make it cost prohibitive. It might be useful to imagine, then, a scenario in which those two elements are absent. In the case of SmartTrack’s imagined demise, it might not be as bad as that: Metrolinx is still planning to expand GO Train service along that route. And if the subway vanishes – well, there are light rail plans on the book for linking the Scarborough Town Centre and Kennedy station. In the meantime, the plan would still encompass massive light rail expansion and a downtown relief line that would improve transit for everyone. As half-imagined futures go, it’s still not a bad one.

Street Etobicoke Historical Society explores Smarts origins of road names – old and New FORGOTTEN STREET NAMES

RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com

Y

ou won’t find Canning Avenue, Myrtle Crescent, or Ridge Road on a map of Etobicoke today, but they’re an important part of the former township’s history. “People aren’t familiar with origins of street names, a lot of them would not know that they existed,” said Denise Harris, chief researcher for the Etobicoke Historical Society. The group has put together an online archive of some of the area’s most prominent streets. Rexdale Boulevard, for example, is one of several streets named for entrepreneur Rex Heslop, credited with establishing the first manufacturing centre in Etobicoke. Before its name change in 1954, the street, whose origins date back to 1833, was known variously as Malton Road, Toronto Gore Road, and Brampton Road. Many of the original names in Long Branch and Islington have been changed. Long Branch, for example had names like Dahlia Avenue and Lake Drive, Harris said, but many were changed during the 1930s after a numerical naming protocol was instituted to mirror New Toronto to the east. “Long Branch changed dozens of street names, most of them were after trees or shrubs, and they ended up with, you know, 33rd street,” she said. “Not very exciting”. The erasures, inadvertently or otherwise, often omitted important civic figures. Take Matthew Canning. He served on Etobicoke Township Council for 30 years, and was elected reeve from 1877 to 1884, becoming so beloved he was bestowed with the nickname “The Father of Etobicoke.” “One of his four kids had the middle name ‘Etobicoke’, (Canning) loved it so much,” Harris said. What’s now known as Cordova Avenue was originally named after Canning. But in the late 1940s, after Islington received door-to-door postal delivery, it was changed so as not to cause confusion with duplicates found elsewhere in the city. Beyond a portrait

of Canning hanging in the Etobicoke Civic Centre, there just wasn’t much recognition of Canning’s impact locally. That changed when the Etobicoke York Community Preservation Panel, of which Harris was a member, recommended naming a new residential street built on the site of the former Glen Agar Plaza, between Martin Grove Road and Kipling Avenue, to Matthew Court, in honour of Canning after it was discovered he had

owned some property there. The recommendation was accepted by community council in 2012. “They took away our Canning (Avenue), and now today there is a street named after him, which is Matthew Court,” Harris said. Of late, street names for new developments in the Humber Bay Shores development have sought to reflect civic history. Such names include Crow’s Beach Lane and Annie Craig

Drive, the latter a steamboat that operated a ferry service between downtown Toronto and the Humber Bay in the late 1800s. “I think it’s very important as a city to maintain and celebrate our history,” said EtobicokeLakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes, who successfully proposed the street names to Toronto council in March 2015. Not all names get chosen, and Grimes was unable to convince city council to approve

naming a street in honour of John Duck’s Hotel, once located on Lake Shore Boulevard West. The application failed on the grounds that first responders might get confused because of the name’s similarity to the more well-known John Street. Now he is pushing for a street to be named in honour of a new development in Long Branch on the grounds of the Eastwood Park Hotel, demolished in 2008. “I’ve heard loud and clear even back then there’s a will to recognize that site,” he said. “While streets named after living persons are discouraged, Grimes said he was able to convince council to commemorate a city park at Parklawn Road and Lake Shore after Jean Augustine, the longtime Etobicoke MP, who was the first female cabinet minister of African Canadian descent. Augustine also successfully pushed for the national recognition of Black History Month every February. The historical society continues to uncover details about street names by sifting through city records, newspapers, and sometimes transcripts of town council meetings. But Harris admitted the process is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. “There are lots of street names people ask me about, and I can’t find the information anywhere, where they came from,” she said. “You’d love to know, because some of them sound original and interesting.”

CONSUMER FEATURE

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

Transit Project Assessment Process GO Rail Network Electrification – Public Meetings Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is helping to transform the way the region moves by building a seamless, convenient and integrated transit network across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). As part of this project, we are expanding GO Transit to enable 15-minute service on most corridors with electrified trains, which will enable faster and more frequent service. Together, these infrastructure improvements will change how people move around Toronto and the region with four times the current number of GO train trips, service on evenings and weekends, and twice the number of trips during peak periods. Building on the GO Electrification Study completed in 2010, which looked at the electrification of the GO Transit rail system network, Metrolinx is currently undertaking environmental studies under the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP), in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08, to examine the conversion of several rail corridors from a diesel to an electric-based system. The project will include design and implementation of a traction power supply system (i.e. traction power substations and high voltage connections to Hydro One’s existing grid), as well as power distribution components (i.e. electrical power distribution facilities) located in the vicinity of the rail corridors.

Sprinter Gavin Smellie aims for Canadian gold at Rio Olympics NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto Etobicoke native Gavin Smellie is hoping for a trip to the Rio Olympics as part of a resurgent men’s Canadian sprint team. “We’re going (to Rio) to get gold,” he said in a recent interview. Certainly, Smellie, 29, and his teammates were agonizingly close to the podium at the 2012 London Olympics. For a moment, post-race, they were listed as the bronze medal winners, only to then be disqualified on a laneviolation ruling. The Canadian sprint team was able to get considerable consolation the following year in Moscow at the 2013 world track and field championships when a disqualification by another team pushed Canada up onto the podium for the bronze medal. It was especially sweet for Smellie and fellow Toronto sprinter Justyn Warner, the two holdovers from the London Olympic team. Since then, the Canadian team has followed a similar roller coaster pattern, disqualified in the finals at both the 2014 Commonwealth and 2015 Pan Am Games, a lackluster sixth-place finish at the 2015 spring World Relay Championships (with Smellie in the lineup) but back on the podium in late August, to close out the season, at the 2015 world championships for a bronze medal (without Smellie in the lineup). Smellie credited the return to form of the relay team to the return of coach Glenroy Gilbert, who helped Canada to a gold medal in the sprint relay at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. “Now he’s here and he’s looking forward to having a great schedule for us, just to build that chemistry again and everything will flow well for sure.” Smellie said the experience gained at the London Olympics will prove invaluable. “The crowd is going to get to you because you’re at the Olympic Stadium, but you can’t let that be too much of a distraction, you’ve got to

stay focused, have your mind on just one goal, just to get the stick (baton) to the other teammate.” At last year’s nationals, Smellie was fourth in the 100m, third in the 200m. In 2014, he won the 100m and finished third in the 200m. Internationally, his best individual result was at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland finishing eighth in the 200m while last summer’s Pan Am Games in front of his hometown crowd was a disappointment as he was disqualified in the opening 100-metre quarter-final round. Although now living in Markham, Smellie grew up in Etobicoke and attended North York high schools. Soccer was his prime sport growing up, but in high school when he switched from George Harvey Collegiate to Dante Alighieri Academy he was devastated he would have to sit out a year of soccer because of transfer rules. He started playing other sports: “I turned out to be a pretty good volleyball player,”

he said with a chuckle. He said he also tried basketball, badminton “and also track and field was the last one.” “I went to the first race, I won it.” On his first trip to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) in 2004 he almost made the podium – finishing fifth in the 100m. The following year, he finished second in the 200m and third in the 100m. “That was the year when Justyn Warner was a phenom,” he said, referring to the fact that his future Olympic teammate who was attending Birchmount Park Collegiate had finished first in both races. Now they’re both chasing Andre De Grasse who last year became the third Canadian sprinter to legally crack the 10-second mark for the 100m (behind Donovan Bailey and Bruny Surin). “We’ve got De Grasse the phenom right now. He’s just pushing us to the limit right now,” Smellie said.

One Love Gala raises funds to support Muslim chaplains >>>from page 1 cial governments have cut back chaplaincy programs in recent years. Supporters at the One Love Gala, a fundraiser for Muslim chaplains Saturday, Jan. 30, at a north Etobicoke banquet hall, were told there are too few to serve the 800 to 1,000 Muslims Downey said are currently behind bars in Ontario. They also heard Downey and others say there’s not enough financial support for the work they do. “Nobody wants to pay. Our community thinks it should be done for free,” he said. “Talk is cheap, and people’s lives are at stake.” Downey’s journey from inmate to imam began on May 10, 1983 - the moment he embraced Islam, he said. Before that, he told the gala’s audience, “I was difficult to be around. I was violent, engaged in gangs. However, God had a plan for me.” Downey said he grew up on some of Toronto’s mean streets, living in Regent

Park and Bathurst Heights, a neighbourhood known as The Jungle, before moving in 1967 to North York’s Driftwood Avenue. As a member of one of the first black families in the area, he felt he had no choice but to fight, he said. “We had to be in a gang just to survive.” After his conversion and release, Downey was asked back by inmates who knew him by reputation, and despite the authorities’ skepticism, got good results. “I’m the guy they listen to, because I’ve been through what they’ve been through,” said Downey who said frustration builds in some inmates over Canada’s military involvement overseas, or how Muslims are treated in Canada by government, police or media. “You can’t abuse a group of people without having it come back at you,” said Downey, who nevertheless teaches Muslim inmates not to blame Canada and innocent Canadians. There’s no way to tell how

Ibrahim Downey, once a gang member in North York, converted to Islam in prison and is now an imam and chaplain. He has counselled more than 5,000 incarcerated people.

many inmates have picked up extremist ideas; you can only find them by listening to them, Downey said. “It’s being monitored by the authorities, but they’re late to the party.” Many inmates convert to Islam in prison, said Ahmed Habhab of Scarborough, who was arrested at 19 and served two years for trafficking in materials used to make

ecstasy. “They’re new to the religion, so it’s not like they know all the answers to their questions.” Born a Muslim, he still felt he was not qualified to answer questions from other inmates about what people can or can’t do as a Muslim. Muslim chaplains such as Downey are important because they provide spiritual guidance to inmates who otherwise may ask someone less qualified, added Habhab, who’s been out of prison since 2011 and says running for mayor of Toronto is in his future plans. People may ask someone who committed a terrorismrelated offence for guidance, Habhab said, “and that’s a potential disaster.” Shahina Siddiqui, author of United Against Terrorism and founder of Winnipeg’s Islamic Social Services Association, said the word “radicalization” was strategically misused by both the former prime minister Stephen Harper’s government and the media. It’s not negative to be a radi-

cal, she argued, citing Martin Luther King and Jesus as people with radical views. “If we didn’t have radicals, society would be stuck in the Dark Ages.” Though members of Daesh (ISIS) and al-Qaeda are terrorists and criminals, politicians should stop calling them jihadis, because they are not, Siddiqui said. Daesh and al-Qaeda don’t recruit youth by inviting them to blow up buildings, rape and kill, she added. “Do you think our youth would go for that?” Instead, Siddiqui said, they start by asking: “Do you want justice in the world?” and, “Do you think you want to give voice to those who need a voice?” Many Muslims don’t know what a chaplain does, “because there’s no concept of chaplaincy in Islam,” said Dr. Hamid Slimi, head of the Canadian Centre for Deen Studies, a Muslim seminary. In the past, Muslims simply volunteered to look after

people, and it’s rewarding work though chaplains “pay gas and everything else” from their own pocket, he said. Slimi said Greater Toronto’s Muslim community needs an army of people skilled in social work and mental health, particularly for Syrian refugees who will have a big problem dealing with post-traumatic stress. “If we don’t invest in the human being, no matter how many buildings we build, they will be empty and useless,” he said. Don Valley West MP Rob Oliphant, who once worked as a prison chaplain in Whitehorse, Yukon, said chaplains give people a chance to get out of prison “better than they went in,” and he hopes the new Liberal government can restore cuts to chaplaincy services. Chaplains should represent the full spectrum of beliefs, so when people are vulnerable they are not preyed upon by extremists and pick up the wrong ideas, he said.

Why choose a Realtor? A Realtor can help you find the perfect first home You’ve worked hard, saved up and now you’re ready to buy your first home. It’s an important purchase, but it can’t be that difficult to pick the perfect house, can it? Unfortunately, the home buying process isn’t easy. Expect to go through many steps and a lot of paperwork before making the big move. Buyers who want to eliminate some of the stress and find the perfect home can trust a Realtor to help them through. Realtors are in the real estate business for a reason. Like other professionals, they have studied their field and continue to upgrade skills to ensure each sale is done quickly and properly. They know the laws involved with purchasing and selling a home and the work involved. Their years of experience mean they know the ins and outs of real estate and their continuous training mean they can keep up with the latest trends in the housing market. A lot of today’s listings are found on the internet, but searchers are only able to see some of the available houses. Realtors can see postings on Multiple Listing Services (MLS) buyers don’t have access to otherwise. He or she may also have connections with other sellers, giving buyers a head start on great properties. Without a Realtor on their team, first-time buyers might miss out on the ideal home. In a tech-forward market, some of the best homes go fast and it’s hard to keep up with a busy career and family life on the go. With a Realtor around, buyers have someone who will

keep on eye on listings while they continue with their busy lives. Careers, families and social lives shouldn’t suffer too much during a move and a Realtor can make sure your life stays on track. When purchasing a home, money is a big concern. Realtors can help budget funds properly because they know all of the necessary extra fees. When budgeting, buyers need to think of the land transfer tax, home insurance, legal costs and more. The listing price can be deceiving for first timers, so a proper budget is required. Also, listing prices are not final. Realtors know how to best negotiate the price of a home so you aren’t paying top dollar. Though there are fees at the time of purchase, there could be even more after moving day. A Realtor knows which questions to ask when viewing a house, including why the owner is selling, how old the roof is and if there has ever been flooding. This could save time on renovations and upgrades later on. A first-time buyer might have an idea of his or her budget and an area in which he or she would like to live, but no idea if the two match up. A Realtor can help decide which area is best, considering all factors. The professionals might even have a few up-and-coming areas that wouldn’t be considered otherwise. They know the demographics in each area and can help first-time buyers find the perfect neighbourhood. A house is one of the biggest purchases a person will make and a Realtor can guide him or her to make the best choices. Settling shouldn’t be an option.

TTC receives $50M to improve transit It’s not new money, but the TTC will receive $50 million from the city this year toward improving transit service. Alongside TTC chair Josh Colle, Mayor John Tory announced this week the extra funding, part of a commitment of $95 million made to the transit commission in 2015. For this year’s budget, the TTC has had to trim $5 million from its operating expenses and suspend service expansions such as the Cherry Street streetcar. Tory also promised to cut subway delays by half within three years. Last year, according to the TTC, delays across the network were down 13 per cent because of additional service, while customer satisfaction was at a historic high of 81 per cent. PRICES GO UP, SERVICE DELAYED Talk about bad timing: on the very morning GO Transit fares increased, the agency reported mass delays across its rail corridors. A GO fare increase – this

w

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT year’s went into effect Monday – has become an annual phenomenon for users of the regional service, a necessary cost, says Metrolinx, for improving bus and train operations. But that didn’t stop many on social media from using pithy hashtags and sharing screenshots of delayed GO schedules to vent their frustrations. GO offers fare refunds for delays of 15 minutes or more in certain situations. Visit serviceguarantee.gotransit.com EQUITY REPORT TO BE RELEASED wTRANSIT

York University’s City Institute is about to release a report, detailing the socio-economic barriers to transit access in the Toronto region. Prepared by Sean Hertel, Roger Keil and Michael Collens, Next Stop: Equity seeks to determine just how

easy it is to make use of transit, particularly in low-income neighbourhoods. The authors spoke with transit riders, planners and writers – I was also interviewed – in determining recommendations for agencies like Metrolinx to address the ongoing concern of improving transit equity. The report is expected to be released this week. YOUR OPINION ON TRANSIT wVOICE

If you’ve got an opinion on the city’s transit priorities you’ll have a chance to sound off during a series of public meetings. The city’s planning department, along with the TTC and Metrolinx, wants feedback on a host of transit plans. The meetings begin the week of Feb. 16 and continue through to March 22. Young community leaders recognized by Rotary >>>from page 1 and community organization honorees at the 17th Annual Awards Gala last Friday at the Old Mill Inn in Etobicoke. LUCAS ANTONIAZZI - Youth Award Recipient (Under 18) A Grade 12 student at Ursula Franklin Academy, Antoniazzi, 17, began giving back at an early age – at 13, embarking on an “amazing” mission trip to Uganda with All Saints Kingsway Church. “It made such a large impact on me, because it gave me a deeper understanding of how other people live,” he said of the 2012 trip, during which he helped build a home in Bbira, a village for children orphaned by AIDS or war. “It was amazing.” Back here in Toronto, Antoniazzi is active in his school community at Ursula Franklin, where he has been a leader with PALS – a school club that helps Grade 8 students with their transition into high school – for the last four years. Through PALS, he’s helped co-ordinate an open house for the families of Grade 8 students, assisted in running a lunch program for Grade 9 students, and acted as a coordinator for PALS’ annual three-night retreat for new students at Camp Tamarack. NISHA BAIG - Youth Award Recipient (Under 18) A Grade 11 student at James Cardinal McGuigan, Baig, 17, was recognized for her volunteer work with MicroSkills – a multi-cultural, non-profit, community-based organization committed to assisting the unemployed. As president of MicroSkills’ Youth Reference Advisory Group, Baig said her focus has been on “educating teens about gender-based violence, stereotypes, prejudice, and violence against women and men.” It was also through MicroSkills that Baig had the opportunity to volunteer with the International Day of the Girl, an event for which she was named outreach co-ordinator for the Federal Girls’ Group. Baig called winning the Rotary Club of Toronto West’s Youth Impact Award a “blessing” and urged other young person her age to get involved in their communities. “I think that often youth don’t see their own potential, but if they would push themselves a little bit more, they would,” said Baig, an aspiring lawyer. “Sometimes just reaching out can be enough to save a lot of people from a lot of things. So my advice is just try – try to have faith in yourself and try to see that you can make a difference.” DISHAN RATNAJOTHI - Youth Award Recipient (Under 25) A third-year business strategy and accounting student at York University’s

Clockwise from top, recipients of the Youth Awards, Toyin Crandell, left, Dishan Ratnajothi, Nisha Baig, Lucas Antoniazzi are recognized by president Brian Spencer of Rotary Toronto West, during the Rotary Toronto West Youth Impact Awards Gala - which took place at The Old Mill on Friday; Timothy Lang, left, and Sinead McCarthy of Youth Employment Services (YES) Toronto, and Jay Mandatino of C.J. Graphics are presented with a Community Organization Award, and a Business Award by Spencer while Frank O’Dea, recipient of the lifetime achievement award, chuckles as his name is called to come to the stage.

Schulich School of Business, Ratnajothi, 20, serves as Schulich director for the York Federation of Students, as vice-president of corporate relations for the Schulich Accounting Society, as senior board ambassador for CPA Ontario, and as a member of York’s Rotaract Club. As if that weren’t enough to keep him busy, Ratnajothi also recently helped co-found Keep Toronto Warm, a start-up organization that seeks to combat homelessness by distributing “warmth packages” – consisting of a warm blanket, a warm beverage card

($5 Tim Hortons gift card), two pairs of socks – to homeless citizens across the Greater Toronto Area. “It’s been great because we’ve been able to talk to different homeless citizens and it’s amazing how, with just one conversation and one warmth package, how much you can impact the course of their day,” he said. “Through the warmth packages that we give, it’s great to know that we’re helping to empower these homeless citizens.” TOYIN CRANDELL - Individual Award Recipient

As executive director of The Love Movement 4:16, Crandell is a leader in educating and motivating youth to become community shapers and leaders through training in the arts. Just last year alone, youth mentored under Crandell’s Love Movement 4:16 were able to successfully launch a series of projects – including books, albums, a clothing line, a visual arts line, and a flash mob featuring 100 youth from across the Americas in partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada and the Pan Am Games.

C.J. GRAPHICS - Business Award Recipient Jay Mandarino, CEO and president of C.J. Graphics, has also founded two not-for-profits – C.J. Skateboard Park and School, an Etobicoke-based registered charity dedicated to the development of children and youth, and JBM Auction Services, through which upwards of $50 million has been raised for charities worldwide. Mandarino, a recipient of both the Diamond Jubilee Medal from Queen Elizabeth II and the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship, is also on the board of directors for the Michael “Pinball” Clemons Foundation (MPCF) and the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario (LDAO). YOUTH EMPLOYMENT SERVICES (YES) - Community Organization Award Recipient Since its founding in 1968, YES has helped hundreds of thousands of youth find and maintain employment through its more than 3,000 partnerships with businesses. With an emphasis on at-risk and disadvantaged youth sector, YES’s innovative employment training, counseling, job services, and job placement programs empower more than 10,000 youth to become selfsufficient contributing members of society each year. FRANK O’DEA - Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient From living on the streets of Toronto at 21, to becoming co-founder of Second Cup and receiving the Order of Canada – O’Dea’s life story is an inspiration. After turning his life around with Second Cup – the largest chain of gourmet coffees and teas in the country – O’Dea went on to co-found Proshred Security, which he grew into an international organization with operations in Canada, Europe and the United States. Along his road to success, O’Dea also took steps to give back to the community by co-founding a number of charitable organizations, including: n Street Kids International, an organization that helps homeless children in third world countries through education and self-reliance programs n War Child (Canada), which provides assistance to children in war-affected countries n Canadian Landmine Foundation, an organization that raises funds and awareness for the dismantling of minefields around the world O’Dea’s most recent project is the social enterprise Young Professionals In Training (YP-IT Data) – a youth employment enterprise that provides real-life, white-collar, life skills to youth ages 16 to 25.

Senior killed after car goes airborne, crashes into home An 88-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene of a collision in south Etobicoke that sent her airborn car into the wall of a home on Birmingham Street Monday morning. Const. Clint Stibbe of Toronto Police Traffic Services said the victim was driving a Toyota Camry westbound on Birmingham Street at around 10:34 a.m. when she struck a Honda CRV midway between 20th and 21st Streets. “The vehicle then continued westbound, striking a curb, going airborne, and then striking a house,” he said, noting that the Camry did not enter the home, but only broke some of the bricks on the outside of the building. While the 88-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries, Stibbe said the driver of the Honda CRV – a woman believed to be in her 20s – suffered only minimal injuries. No other injuries were

reported, as Stibbe said no one was inside the home at the time of the collision. “We’re looking at whether it’s a mechanical, medical or some other incident that might have occurred,” Stibbe said. “There was a high rate of speed...so speed will be a factor in the collision, but the question will be asked why there was such a high rate of speed.” shot at near islington and bloor wVehicle

LEGGETT, Anne (nee Michiluk) May 17, 1928 - January 26th 2016 Our loving mother and grandmother passed away peacefully in her sleep Tuesday, January 26th. Loving wife to Ron (deceased 2005) for 55 years. Loving mother to Cathy, Bradley (Gail), Stephen (Joanne) and Maureen Clarke (Robert). Proud grandmother of Sarah and Jessica Leggett and Alexander and Stephen Clarke. Grandma is in Heaven giving her big, BIG, hugs to Jonathan and Stephanie (1994). Also remembered by her lifelong friend Edith Smith and cousin Peter (Leda). Mom was a great cook, her Christmas cookies were so good she had to hide them from us. She enjoyed knitting, playing bridge, quilting and traveling. Mom’s life at times was hard, but she was a very strong woman and she made sure her family stayed together and strong. She had to raise her 4 young children on her own for over 1Ω years while her husband, Ron, was in hospitals and rehabilitation as a result of a workplace accident. We wish to thank Dr. Hamboyan and Dr. D. Kapusta for their care of our mother. And special thank you to the Staff of the Reminiscent floor at Sunrise Senior Living - Oakville for their generous and kind care in making our mothers last years comfortable and enjoyable as possible. A Funeral Service and burial have taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada in Anne’s memory. Messages of condolences may be placed at RidleyFuneralHome.com.
