Service added to 501 Queen streetcar

TTC officials will increase service starting this month to the 501 Queen streetcar after years of customer complaints about short turns and infrequent service. Service over the entire route, from Long Branch to Neville Park, will be operated every 10 minutes, all day, every day, officials said. There is also added service for morning commuters headed downtown. The TTC will add three more through trips at 7:19 a.m., 7:29 a.m. and 7:39 a.m. departing from Long Branch loop to downtown. TTC reported time will be added to the service all days to improve service. Service will be added at busy peak times. Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes announced the changes in a recent e-newsletter. A temporary route split will operate between Long Branch loop and Humber loop, and between Humber loop and Neville Park loop from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Customers may transfer between the two parts of the loop. Some streetcars will continue from Long Branch to Neville Park, and some will be turned back at Humber loop, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Queen 301 overnight service from 2 p.m. to 5 a.m. will continue to operate as a through service between Neville Park and Long Branch.

Pinch felt as food costs rise

Daily Bread Food Bank, meal drop-in centres under increased demand to stretch dollars as need grows

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com It’s only the beginning of the new year and the Weston King Neighbourhood Centre’s dropin meal program is already feel-

ing the effects of rising food costs. A spokesperson for the Weston Road and King Streetarea community centre, Ken Theobald, says that its charitable food sources, such as

Second Harvest and the Daily Bread Food Bank, are under an increased demand and so “the dollars we do have aren’t going as far as they used to.” At the same time, he added, the number of residents who are

reliant on its drop-in breakfast, lunch, and community dinners are steadily increasing from about 65 to 100 people daily. In a recently released study, the University of Guelph Food >>>hike, page 2

NSP-HPNY-ETOG

>>>from page 1 Institute predicted food inflation rates to hit anywhere between two to four per cent across Canada, e xc e e d i n g t h e g e n e ra l inflation rate, after a year in which food prices in grocery stores rose by 4.1 per cent. “In dollar terms, we can anticipate based on historical data, the average Canadian household will spend $8,631 on food, of which $2,416 will be outside the household (restaurants),” stated the study. “This means our forecast predicts the average household could spend up to $345 more on food in 2016.” Fo r m o s t p e o p l e i n Toronto, this expenditure is frustrating, but will likely only take a small bite out of their income. However, those on fixed incomes will feel the brunt of these increases. Weston resident Carl Tebo is one of those people. He was more than happy to chat on a bitter cold early January afternoon at the Weston King Neighbourhood Centre. “The impact is dramatic,” he said. “I’ll eat fewer meals at home, more at places like these.” Drop-in centres, like Weston’s, ensures that Tebo and those like him don’t go hungry – “that’s number o n e,” h e s a i d . “A n d , I shouldn’t have to. I shouldn’t

have to miss meals because I can’t afford them. I shouldn’t have to eat unhealthy food, full of carbs and fats.” Weston King’s menu, Tebo said, is varied. “There are days that are better than others, but the demand is great and their budget is small,” he said. “They do perform miracles with the relatively small budget that they do have. I commend them for that.” Tebo relies on the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP). He said he took his January payment that arrived in December and went to No Frills where he was only able to purchase three days’ worth of meat. “That’s all I’d have for the month if it wasn’t for this place,” he said. Tebo’ monthly ODSP income is $600, an amount he said he could spend in a week at the grocery store when he was working. T h e We s t o n K i n g Neighbourhood Centre has seen the largest increase in the number of seniors who are now feeling the pinch more than ever – because they are on a fixed income, Theobald said. “It’s sad,” he said. Distribution centres, such as the Daily Bread Food Bank, are hit double in situations like these, its executive director Gail Nyberg said. “First, we’ll see an increase

in member agencies because people are being pushed to the edge. As prices increase, we’ll see the need increase,” she said. On top of that, much of Daily Bread’s food is purchased and prices on such items as rice, beans, and lentils will increase, Nyberg pointed out. “O u r b u y e r s’ d o l l a r shrinks as their need grows,” she said. Not only is it crucial to donate to the Daily Bread Food Bank during non-holiday periods, it is important that we look at the way we store food, Nyberg said. For example, vegetables will keep much longer if they are washed and trimmed and wrapped properly. “I read a repor t that people like me throw out in excess of $1,000 worth of food a year. We need to do better as a society,” she said. What the Weston King Neighbourhood Centre is lacking is fruits, vegetables and dairy. Produce can be donated to the centre as well as cash. “In the long run, what’s really needed are policy changes,” Theobald said. “People on fixed incomes have been living at the same levels for years.”

Ella Jonas Farlinger, 14, joins new Family Channel show CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Ella Jonas Farlinger may play a struggling singer-songwriter on the upcoming Family Channel show Lost & Found Music Studios, but in real life the Etobicoke School of the Arts student has, at just 14, already established an enviable singing and acting resume for herself. Born and raised in the Annex to writer/director/producer parents, Ella got a taste for showbiz early and grew to love it from a young age. “I’ve been on sets since I was in the womb, and I started acting because of my parents,” she said, noting that her parents own a production company called New Real Films. “Seeing the work they put into it was just so inspiring to me, so I knew early on that I wanted to get into it, too.” In fact, it was while accompanying her parents on a film shoot that Ella was inspired to apply to Etobicoke School of the Arts (ESA). “Funnily enough, my parents actually shot a film at ESA a couple of years ago, and I remember walking around the set and just kind of exploring and having one of those cheesy moments where I realized ‘I want to go here.’” she said with a laugh. “After that, I was just really driven to get in and to attend school there.” Now in Grade 9 and majoring in

Music Theatre – which she described as ESA’s “triple-threat program” for singing, dancing and acting – Ella said the short time she’s been at ESA has already paid dividends. “It’s a great program. It’s really interesting to study musical theatre and to learn each of the components separately. I think it really builds you as a performer, so it’s been really eyeopening,” she said, noting that she draws inspiration from her fellow arts-minded classmates. “To finally be in an environment where everyone values art as much as you do... it’s unreal.” It should have come as no surprise, however, that Ella was accepted into the prestigious arts school. In addition to joining the Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus – “a huge choir of insanely talented kids” where she still sings today – at age seven, Ella also had a starring role in the award-winning Disney Channel series My Babysitter’s a Vampire at age eight, and has also scored parts in movies such as I’m Yours and What We Have, and on TV shows including Rookie Blue and Saving Hope. In her latest gig as Eva on the Family Channel’s Lost & Found Music Studios, Ella gets to combine her love of singing with her passion for acting all in one role, she explained. “Basically, Lost & Found follows this elite music program run by a musician-turned-producer,” she

said. “It’s kind of like an after-school program where young musicians come in, they write music and collaborate with each other, they critique each other’s work, and

also they really do find themselves – hence the name Lost & Found.” In the first episode of the show – which premieres on Family Channel tomorrow at 6 p.m. – Ella’s charac-

ter Eva struggles to find her place amongst Lost & Found’s talented crop of musicians, she explained. “It’s Eva’s second year at Lost & Found and she’s having a lot of trouble fitting in, and it’s mainly because she comes from a very sheltered home life. She really wants to branch out and make friends and stuff, but it’s really difficult for her,” Ella said. “She’s trying to differentiate her home life from her newer, bolder studio self – so the whole season is just her really branching out. I’m really excited to see what people think of her whole process of finding her voice.” For Ella, the experience of shooting the first season of Lost & Found, which wrapped up this summer, was an “incredible experience.” “All the cast members, we’re all young musicians that really want to get our music out in the world, get our message out, so we all just bonded so quickly,” she said. “We’re a huge family – I know everyone says that, but it’s true. We all felt big love being there together and experiencing that together...Now we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a second season.” You can follow Ella on Instagram @ella_farlinger

Union Station lease deal seems like it’s good for Toronto

T

oronto might be a city on the move, but a casual observer might wonder whether that movement would be outpaced by a glacier. When we build something – whether a subway, a highway or a waterfront – we are not inclined much to hurry. Of all the slow-burn builds, few are slower than the revitalization of Union Station. The grand old station officially opened in 1927 and was built during the First World War. It was then and remains a vital transportation hub for the largest city in Canada. It was in 2000 – 16 years ago – that Toronto purchased the station and looked for a private-sector partner to redevelop and renovate the station. Nearly a decade ago, Toronto and the federal and provincial governments launched a $640-million plan to expand, repair and revitalize the station. It went over budget, and now our view is going to cost in the neighbourhood of $800 million. It was supposed to be finished New deal in 2015. brings life to Now, it is expected to be done in 2017. To say the project’s progUnion Station ress has been painful is an understatement. It was hopeful news, then, when at the Jan. 4 Government Management Committee, councillors considered altering the lease with Osmington, the company that manages the leases in the public space of Union Station. The lease will see Osmington put another $37 million into the project to enhance the leasable public space, to turn the station into more of a destination. The deal seems like a good one: Toronto will pay for its portion of the redevelopment by forgoing the incremental revenue it would receive from the new spaces. In the end, the city projects it will still get more revenue than if the spaces were maintained as-is. The only money that the city would put up front is $500,000 for lawyers, to make sure the deal is, and stays, as good as it seems. We sincerely hope that it is. While it’s difficult to fault the city for the escalating costs of a project that is at once essential and a profound engineering challenge, it would be nice to cap this very tough job with a flourish to make it all look easy.

Budget chief Crawford not interested in tax increases It didn’t take long for the fundamental direction of Toronto’s budget to emerge this week. The Jan. 5 meeting of the budget committee had broken for lunch, after its first foray into the $11-billion worth of unfinished business that is the 2016 operating and capital budget. The budget, as has been noted, is unfinished by design. City finance staff made it clear in late 2015 that it is unable on its own to square maintaining existing services and adding the services that council approved last year, and also keeping the property tax increase below the rate of inflation. Staff, in fact, couldn’t even figure out how to balance the budget without the $67-million worth of enhancements approved by council and its agencies. The budget will require $23 million of, well, something to balance it without adding a lick of service.

david nickle the city Council has to figure its own way out of this. There are not really very many routes. Council could raise property taxes higher than inflation, or find some similar way to bring in extra cash. Or it could dig into other parts of the budget, either cutting services or trimming staff and resources, expecting more out of what remains. Or, it could simply refuse to fund some or all of the enhancements it supported through 2015. At least as far as the budget committee goes, it looks as though this last option is the one that we’re going to be looking at. Budget chair Gary Crawford spoke with reporters after a morning going over those options with staff, and immediately after council progressives

Joe Mihevc and Joe Cressey had made their pitches for versions of the first option. And he made it clear over the next month of budget hearings, he’s not going to have much time for tax increases and revenue tools. It’s going to all be about setting priorities, among those $67-million in enhancements, or as Crawford referred to them in scrums, the “wish list.” We’ll see how all that goes. I don’t recall any of the motions and reports approved at council last year including the term “wish list.” Council debated the poverty reduction strategy last year, for instance, and approved it in principle then sent it along to be funded. When council partially funded service enhancements at the Toronto Transit Commission in 2015, it didn’t represent the full roll-out of those increases as a “wish” for 2016. To be fair, it is always the

case that a government has to balance its aspirations with its means, and nothing is guaranteed. But council and Mayor John Tory ought to have considered affordability in the long term when they approved and promoted those things, during what may well be remembered as the feel-good honeymoon year after the 2014 election. That was the year when council supported a hugely expensive rebuild of the Gardiner Expressway, and when it approved paying premiums to have city road work finished early, and when it put its stamp of approval on all sorts of enhancements. This year is shaping up to be a little more sobering. To paraphrase Mick Jagger: you can’t always get what you thought you voted for.

Making It Easier Since 1931

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

Toronto’s Union Station could become a “unique destination” with improved spaces for retail, dining and cultural experiences as soon as 2018 if Toronto Council agrees to open its lease with Osmington Inc., the station’s main lessee. Osmington proposed the change to the city’s Government Management Committee on Monday. It would see Osmington put an additional $37 million into enhancing the public spaces in the renovation of the venerable train station. The city would, on paper, be responsible for 40 per cent of those costs, but the proposed lease would see Osmington front the entire amount and recover the city’s share by withholding leasing fees on the new spaces. That would still leave the city

with slightly more revenues than it would receive without the enhancements. And city real estate officials agreed that doing so would turn the site into a destination as well as a transit hub. “This was seen as a transportation hub, slash, mall,” said Toronto Real Estate Director Joe Casali. “Now it’s seen as a destination that could fuel the downtown.” Local councillor Pam McConnell was supportive of the plan to beef up the public space at the station. “This is a way that people can get their groceries on the way home, get their dinners,” said McConnell. “We have very busy people here so we have to make it very easy. (Enhancing) this kind of central iconic place says to me we are proud of what we have at the City of Toronto.” Only Etobicoke North Councillor

It started off as a mess and I’m not going to be hypocritical and jump in and say it’s a good deal. – Councillor Rob Ford

Rob Ford, back after enduring his third round of chemotherapy, voted against the plan. He said that he did so to be consistent, insisting that he had opposed the Union Station redevelopment every step of the way and wouldn’t change his position even faced with an enhancement that seemed to cost Torontonians nothing. “I never voted for it,” he said. “It started off as a mess and I’m not going to be hypocritical and jump in and say it’s a good deal.” The lease renegotiation will be decided by Toronto Council at its meeting on Feb. 4.

ARREST OF NORTH AMERICA’S MOST WANTED FUGITIVE IN 1985 MADE CLIVE RICHARDS A HERO IN THE U.S. ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

T

oronto police officer Clive Richards was at the right place at the right time 31 years ago, and that place was Scarborough’s Golden Mile. That March day, the 41 Division constable would step into the annals of true crime history: he would capture North America’s most wanted fugitive, a killer so diabolical he might have inspired parts of Thomas Harris’ The Silence of The Lambs. Richards was getting ready for his afternoon shift March 2, 1985 when a clerk passed on a last-minute message: be on the lookout for a white Toyota Tercel with New York plates. The car was registered to computer programmer Beverly Capone but was being driven by Alex J. Mengel. Days earlier, he had murdered her and police officer Gary Stymiloski – and in a horrific twist, removed Capone’s scalp and wore the grisly wig as a disguise to get across the border. A sadistic killer, Mengel was referenced in Harris’ novel Silence of the Lambs, which went on to become an Academy Award-winning movie. Richards and his fellow officers had jotted down the vehicle description and licence plate before heading out for their shift on that cold, snowy Saturday in March. “You get inundated with looking for people, cars and licence plates,” Richards recalled in a recent interview from his Etobicoke home. “You can’t remember everything, so it was just another thing you write in your memo book.” Richards was on his own, assigned to patrol the Golden Mile area along Eglinton Avenue near Pharmacy Avenue. “I was driving along and I see this car parked right outside a store,” he said. “As I go past it, I thought, ‘Wait a minute, that was a Toyota Tercel with New York plates.’” A man was sitting in the Tercel; Richards had his memo book in his pocket. “I can’t stop and take my book out because if this is the guy, he’s just killed two people and we knew he was armed with at least two guns.,” Richards said. “I thought, ‘What am I going to do? I don’t

want to drive too far, I don’t want to reverse, I don’t want to get out of the car and get shot.’” Richards decided to take a quick spin around the block. “After I passed him, I quickly got my memo book. I was ready with the licence plate and the description,” he said. “Then I came back around where this car was parked and it wasn’t there.” After a quick search of the area though, Richards spotted the vehicle again and came face to face with Mengel. “I saw the licence plate, and it is the car, and your pulse goes up,” said Richards. “The guy was looking at me, and I was looking at him, so I think he knew what I knew.” Richards didn’t get out of his car. Instead, he backed up a bit and called for assistance. “At that point, he (Mengel) put it in gear and just went off up onto Eglinton,” Richards said. “I just pulled in right behind him.” As the chase headed west on Eglinton, Mengel was seen rolling down his car window. “I put over the radio, ‘Don’t

overtake this guy because he’s getting ready to shoot. Stay behind me and let’s see what happens,’” Richards recalled. The Tercel, with its driver’s door partially open, hit a snowbank near a car dealership on Eglinton. On impact, the door flew open and the gun Mengel was holding slid out. “He was so scared. I didn’t see anyone with their hands so high,” Richards said of Mengel’s surrender. “We knew he didn’t have a gun on him at that point and then we arrested him.” Police found Capone’s scalp in the Tercel and two guns in and around the car. One gun had been used to kill Stymiloski, the other had been stolen from the slain officer. Richards disarmed himself before getting in the back seat of a cruiser with Mengel, and another officer drove them to the 41 Division station at Eglinton and Birchmount Road for processing. News of the arrest made Richards an instant celebrity in the United States.

“They went crazy in the States,” he said, noting he was flooded with interview requests from media outlets, including the New York Times. “My name was right across all the papers down there.” Richards was flown to New York City three times to receive awards, meet the relatives of Mengel’s victims, and testify at grand jury hearings. He was even given the key to Westchester County. “I was treated like royalty,” said Richards. “There was a lineup of people wanting to drive us around.” Richards rose up the ranks to detective sergeant and retired from the service in November 2014. Mengel, 30, was shot dead while trying to escape from custody in a New York State police car on the Taconic State Parkway April 26, 1985. Unearthing a Serial Killer, a recently released book by David Paul and Kevin McMurray, has also linked Mengel to the July 1984 abduction and murder of 12-year-old Antonella Mattina in New York City.

Antonella’s skull was found in November 1987 off the same parkway where Mengel tried to make his escape and was killed by police. In a phone interview, Paul described the moments before and after Mengel murdered officer Stymiloski, 27, during a routine traffic stop in Yonkers, New York. “He calmly states to the front passenger in his car, ‘Michael, when you hear the gunshot, drive the car home.’ There is a calmness in Mengel that only comes from experience,” said Paul, who himself is a retired police officer. “After he shoots Gary Stymiloski in the head, he hijacks his police car while Stymiloski is dying in the police car. I cannot find another record of such an incident in American police history... We’ve found a lot where the police officer has

been shot, and he’s on the road and the guy steals his car, but never when he’s still in the car. Then he has the wherewithal to rob Gary Stymiloski of his service revolver. This all demonstrates a high level of criminal sophistication.” Pa u l s a i d Me n g e l , a Guyanese-born tool and die maker, would’ve surely tried to kill Richards had he not fumbled his gun. “I guarantee you,” said Paul, “if he got a grip on that gun, he’s going to shoot him.” What was on Richards’ mind during the dramatic arrest? “I was just making sure no one would get shot...I guess you do what you have to do at the time,” he said. “Afterwards, when you start thinking about it, you realize what could’ve happened. A lot of ‘what ifs’ go through your mind.”

Find and maintain the right carpet for you Choosing the right flooring options can be tough. Follow these dos and don’ts to pick the right carpeting for your home. Carpets provide both practical and aesthetic appeal inside a home. In winter, carpets help keep homes warm, and the right colour carpet can add to design schemes. While rugs may have originated in the Far East, North America also has some rich carpet history. The carpet industry began in North America in the late 1700’s and hasn’t stopped since. Tufted carpets and machine-powered manufacturing helped churn out yards upon yards of carpeting, making it a popular, affordable and common addition to homes, especially after the post-World War II housing boom. Carpeting remains a go-to flooring material in modern homes. In fact, many homes offer a blend of both carpeting in some rooms and different flooring choices in others. Upon choosing carpet, it is important that homeowners follow some guidelines to prolong a carpet’s longevity and maintain its style. The following are some common carpeting dos and don’ts. • DO consider the room’s purpose and foot traffic before shopping for carpeting. Make a list of the attributes desired (e.g., soundproofing, easy care, high pile) and present these to the salesperson so he or she can help you make the best

choice. • DON’T rush into flooring choices. Unlike paint colours, flooring materials are more permanent choices that are only updated every several years or more. Weigh all of your options before diving in. • DO consider conservative colours and styles. Neutral hues and patterns will blend better with furniture options. This means you can change furniture out and still keep the existing carpeting, which complements any new pieces. Also, if there’s a chance you might sell your home in the near future, buyers tend to look for a neutral colour scheme they can make their own. • DON’T skimp on padding to save a few dollars on the carpet installation. The carpeting needs a solid foundation to last and look its best. Inadequate padding can lead to extra and noticeable wear and tear. Invest in a good foundation for the carpeting, like firm, dense padding in high-traffic areas. • DO become knowledgeable about different carpet styles, such as frieze, Berber, Saxony, textured, and more. This will help ensure you make the most educated decision. • DON’T purchase at the first store you visit. Shop

around to investigate different pricing and specials. Also, consider the professionalism and expertise of the staff responsible for carpet installation. High-cost carpet may not look very good if it isn’t installed correctly. • DO stain-protect rugs and carpeting, which can help repel stains that would otherwise become

permanent and can prolong the longevity of the flooring. • DON’T forget to vacuum carpets frequently to prevent ground-in dirt and debris. • DO pick textured carpets to conceal footprints and vacuum track marks.

Police are looking for two men involved in New Year's Eve shooting at a Westmore and Finch business.

SIU investigates after man, 32, found dead in Scarlett Road home The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has assigned five investigators to probe the New Year’s Day death of a 32-year-old man at a home in Etobicoke. Preliminary information gathered by the SIU indicates Toronto police started receiving phone calls from the home – located on Scarlett Road, just south of Lawrence Avenue – at around 2 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 1. Those calls, the SIU reported in a release issued later that same day, were for a possible intruder in the home. “Officers attended and determined that no one had broken into the residence,” the SIU release reads. “Over the course of the morning, officers attended the scene more than once for similar reports.” The 32-year-old male victim was found inside the home at around 11 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The SIU has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to investigate the incident. Anyone who may have information regarding the case is asked to contact the SIU at 1-800-7878529, ext. 2150. campaign nabs 211 drivers wride

Nine fire trucks and 35 firefighters responded to the scene of a twoalarm blaze at a north Etobicoke coffee roasting facility early Sunday, Jan. 3. Toronto Fire Capt. Adrian Ratushniak said the fire call came in at 4:31 a.m. from 65 Carrier Dr. – an address listed to Coffee Club LP. “(Firefighters) went i n t o t h e w a re h o u s e area to find several large bags of coffee husks on fire,” he said, noting it appeared the fire was largely contained to those bags. “There also ended up being smoke within the unit, in the office area, so we cleared smoke f r o m t h a t a re a ,” h e added. No i n j u r i e s we re reported at the scene. “The fire was contained to a small area and it was a small dollar loss,” Ratushniak said of the fire, which is estimated to have caused about $5,000 worth of damage.

Voss wins world ringette gold in Helsinki, Finland Team Canada U21 dominates competition before besting Team Finland U20 on home ice in best-of-three final CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke Ringette alum Erica Voss captured gold at the 2016 World Ringette Championships in Helsinki, Finland this week. The 19-year-old University of Toronto mechanical engineering student plays defence for the Canadian Junior National Ringette team, which went an undefeated 6-0 over the course of the Dec. 27 to Jan. 3 tournament’s round robin play. After easily downing Team Czech (32-0), Team Sweden (17-1), Team Sweden U20 (31-0), Team Slovakia (19-0) and Team USA (19-0), Team Canada U21 took on their toughest competitor in Team Finland U20 in their final game of the round robin on New Year’s Day – ultimately defeating the Finns 8-5 to advance alongside them to the best-of-three series final for the championship’s President’s Trophy. Voss’s Team Canada U21 then defeated Team Finland U20 in two straight games on Jan. 2 and Jan. 3 – the first by a score of 7-5 and the second in overtime 10-9 – to win gold and the championship title.

Etobicoke native Erica Voss (back row, third from left) celebrates a gold medal win alongside her Team Canada U21 teammates at the 2016 World Ringette Championships in Helsinki, Finland on Sunday.

“It feels freaking amazing,” Ottawa’s Sarah-Lynne Begin, who scored the overtime winner and was named Canada’s player of the game, said in a statement. “I was a

bit nervous going into the second game, but looking around at the girls in the dressing room, I knew we were ready and I knew we could do it.”

Voss, who was a new addition to the team this year, took home three points on the tournament. “To be on the ice as Team Canada with the anthem playing and all

that: that’s the most exciting part for me,” Voss told The Guardian in an interview shortly before departing for Helsinki to compete in the worlds – by far the largest competition of her ringette career to date. Voss first started playing “the fastest game on ice” with Etobicoke Ringette when she was six, and continued with the club until she turned 13 and began playing AA competitive ringette for Mississauga. She now plays for Richmond Hill in the National Ringette League. She was named to Team Canada U21 this past May after being scouted at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in February and attending the team’s spring training camp. “It’s hard to describe (how I feel),” Voss said in December of her experience as a member of the junior national team. “Growing up, I went to a lot of ringette camps, and at those camps my instructors were all national team players. So, to now be on a national team myself, it kind of feels like I’m becoming one of those players that I looked up to for so long.” For full stats from the 2016 World Ringette Championships, go to www. wrc2015.fi/en/Results.html

Etobicoke pair make national U-18 women’s hockey squad NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Two Etobicoke hockey players who helped Ontario to a national U-18 women’s title will now try and help Canada regain world championship honours from the United States. Forward Daryl Watts and goaltender Stephanie Neatby were both named to Canada’s national team which will host the U-18 world championships in St. Catharines Jan. 8 to 15. The U.S. won last season after Canada had won the three previous years. Overall, since the tournament started in 2008, Canada and the U.S. have each won four. Neatby, a student at Etobicoke’s Father Redmond Catholic Secondary School, said it was “very much” an honour to be selected to the national team. Watts, a student at Bishop Strachan School in mid-town Toronto, agreed: “It’s kind of surreal just thinking that we’ll be representing Canada at home. I can’t even process it, I’m so excited.” The only representatives on the team from Toronto, both are

playing hockey in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), which is the top junior women’s league in the province – Watts for the Mississauga Chiefs, Neatby for the Toronto Aeros. Watts actually leads the PWHL in scoring with 40 points (19 goals, 21 assists) in 21 games. Neatby in nine games has a .928 save percentage and 1.24 goals-against-average. Both started their hockey careers in Etobicoke, both at one time suiting up in both the Humber Valley Sharks and the Etobicoke Dolphins organizations. Both were also integral in helping Ontario capture the gold medal at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship which was held in Huntsville in November. Both were on the Ontario ‘Red’ team (one of two from Ontario) which won the gold medal game in overtime 2-1 over Manitoba. Watts nabbed the lone assist on the winning goal in overtime. “That was awesome. That’s like the biggest tournament win ever in my entire sporting career so it was very special and especially to do it

in kind of a home crowd – that was really cool,” said Watts. And Neatby was in net for all 83 minutes, stopping all but one of the 17 shots on goal.

“It was unbelievable, I was so happy to be in that game, the team worked so hard to get there. It was just an honour to be chosen on the team let alone to play in that game,

it was so much fun.” Canada is set to open its tournament against Russia Friday, Jan. 8, 7:30 p.m. at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines.

HOLY SPIRIT, Thou make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who will give the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory, Amen. Person must pray this 3 consecutive days without stating one’s wish. After the 3rd day your wish will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your favour has been granted. K.F.

SPECIALIZING IN DISPOSAL AND WASTE BIN RENTALS Fast & Professional | Upfront Pricing | Licensed & Insured

Call today 416-667-0503 or visit www.crystalbins.com We offer disposal bins ranging from 5 yards to 20 yards

You can choose to pay month-to-month instead of paying up-front for the whole year. The business can charge up to 25 per cent more for monthly payments than the total cost of the annual, upfront fee. However, monthly payments provide flexibility and convenience. n All contracts must end after a year: Ask about the club’s renewal policy and how you will be contacted to renew. The gym or fitness club must send you a renewal notice between 30 and 90 days before your contract expires, listing any changes to your new contract. If you received a renewal notice and do not respond to it, the club has the right to renew and bill you under the renewed contract. “Making the decision to join a gym or fitness club

can be challenging when you feel pressured to sign up before a promotion ends,” David Orazietti, minister of government and consumer services, said in a release. “Co n s u m e r Pro t e c t i o n Ontario offers resources to help you ensure you’re asking the right questions and keep you informed about your consumer rights.” Contracts for a gym or sports club membership or for classes such as martial arts or dance are called personal development services under the Consumer Protection Act. The rules apply where prepayment for more than $50 is required. The Ministry of Government and Consumer Services dealt with more than 710 gym and fitness club-related complaints and inquiries in 2015.

Servicing Toronto and the GTA, we specialize in providing contractors and home owners fast and affordable waste management solutions.
