Canadians from coast to coast found their way to the newly built Centennial Park Pan Am BMX Centre in Etobicoke this weekend to watch the BMX Canada Cup, a test event for the facility before the Pan Am Games get underway. The turnout brought competitors and spectators from all across the country, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Japan on June 13 and 14. Despite strident opposition from some residents last year at a community meeting, it appeared that some locals and out-of-towners appreciated the new $4.5-million facility and were excited for this summer’s games. Etobicoke residents David and Dayna Ellis were particularly enthusiastic as they watched the races from the grass hill beside the arena.

“This track is wonderful and I think it will be of great use later on,” David said. “I think it was something that was needed in the GTA for sure, I don’t know of any other tracks nearby.” David added that the arena would promote the sport and

attract competitors from across the city and beyond. He wished the arena were available when he was younger. “I think the turnout for the test event is enough to say that the turnout for the Pan Am event is going to be amazing,”

Mystic Pointe and area residents told councillors Tuesday night they are willing to lose community benefits to fight a 48-storey condo proposal headed to the Ontario Municipal Board. Etobicoke York Community Council endorsed city planners’ recommendation in an unanimous vote that Toronto City Council direct city legal and planning staff to attend the board’s pre-hearing July 8 to oppose the developer’s appeal. Mystic Pointe is a condominium community west of Park Lawn Road immediately south of the Gardiner Expressway. Family runs with torch in Pan Am relay Guardian carrier Anthony Hebbes, mom Patty, dad Tom selected to carry flame CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com For 13-year-old Etobicoke Guardian carrier Anthony Hebbes and his parents Tom and Patty, the Pan Am Games Torch Relay proved a family affair last week. All three members of the Markland Woods area family were chosen by random draw to carry the Toronto 2015 Pan Am flame on Wednesday, June 10 – Day 12 of the flame’s 41-day journey in advance of the July 10-26 Games. “It was really fun. I was a little nervous at first...but it was exciting,” Anthony, a Grade 7 student at St. Clement Catholic School, said of being a torchbearer. “I told some of my friends at school and they thought it was pretty cool.” In total, an estimated 3,000 torchbearers like Anthony and his parents are expected to help share the Pan Am spirit over the course of the relay’s 5,000-kilometre trek across more than 130 communities, before making its final stop on July 10 at the Opening Ceremony of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games. For Tom, the highlight of Wednesday’s leg of the relay was watching on as Anthony lit Patty’s torch with his own in Port McNicoll, ON. “It was kind of neat for me, because I saw Patty and Anthony handing the flame off to each other,” he told The Guardian in a phone interview last Wednesday afternoon on the drive back to Toronto from Midland, where he carried the torch. “I won’t say I got choked up, but it was one of those moments I know I’m going to remember for the rest of my life.” Patty, who used to work for Pan Am, said the opportunity to participate in the Pan Am Torch Relay as a torchbearer marked the fulfillment of a long-time dream. “I always thought it would be a really cool thing to do, but we couldn’t enter before,” she said, explaining that, as a Pan Am employee in the past, neither she nor any member

of her family were eligible to participate. “So we were absolutely thrilled (to be chosen). We really chalk it up to being a once-in-a-lifetime experience – especially since it was a random draw and all three of us got picked,” she said. “I’m not sure how many motherson torchbearers there will be, but what a proud moment for us,” she added. The Hebbes family’s relay experience, Patty said, was bolstered by the fact that the event was so well organized by the Pan Am team. From their arrival at Victoria Harbour Elementary School at 9:30 a.m. to pick up their uniforms, get their instructions, and board the Torch Relay shuttle bus, to the endof-day celebrations in Midland, the

day ran like “clockwork”, Patty said – even despite a tornado warning that threatened to put a damper on the day. “Luckily, when we were running, it wasn’t even raining and the sun actually came out, so it was pretty amazing,” she said. “We really had a fabulous time – and like I said, it was really impeccable the way they ran the torch relay. I was really impressed.” Now that their relay responsibilities

are behind them, the Hebbes family said they’re looking forward to cheering on Team Canada at next month’s Pan Am Games here in Toronto. While Anthony’s keen to get out to watch some of the boxing action, Patty said the family is also considering buying tickets to some of the table tennis, badminton and track and field events. “We are very excited about going and we think it’s going to be a fantastic event,” she said. Added Tom: “It showcases Toronto and it really gives us the opportunity for people see the city front and centre,” he said. “And as proud Canadians, everyone’s gotta cheer on Canada.”

Provincial Liberals to learn same lesson on carding that Mayor John Tory did?

aybe those holding power in this city and this province want to eventually stamp out the odious practise of carding by police and maybe they don’t. But if they do, a word of advice: it’s hard to stamp something out walking tip-toe. That seems to be what the provincial government had in mind this week when it sent Community Safety Minister Yasir Naqvi out to announce new regulations this fall to govern police when they stop and question members of the public not suspected of a crime. The regulation isn’t a ban of the investigative practice that has been shown to disproportionately target young men of colour in Toronto, and Naqvi made that clear when he announced it on Tuesday.

david nickle the city The regulations, yet unreleased, will simply require that stops by police not be arbitrary. It isn’t going over any better with community groups than the policy approved earlier this year at the Toronto Police Services Board, a policy that amounted to little more than guidelines. Today Mayor John Tory will make a forthright attempt to stop carding once and for all, bringing a motion to the Toronto Police Services Board along with a mea culpa, for supporting the policy to begin with this spring. It’s a position Tory was shamed into taking by a gathering of highly influential Torontonians and a

seminal essay by Toronto journalist Desmond Cole describing in detail the indignity and traumatizing effect of the practice. Learning a lesson It’s a wonder the provincial government isn’t taking a lesson from Tory’s experience and matching his newfound disdain. It’s true police value carding as an intelligencegathering strategy. The information gleaned may well contribute to ongoing investigations or simply give police a better map of the communities they’re assigned to protect. But one wonders at the intensity of the defence of the practise by Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders and his predecessor Bill Blair. Crime rates have been declining for years in Toronto and it is unlikely that police enforcement,

or lack thereof, has had as much to do with that as have simple demographic shifts. At the same time, there’s a wider context emerging, as evidence emerges that police across North America are engaging in sometimes quite odious acts of racial profiling and violence toward people of colour. Holding all that in balance, it is perplexing to see political leadership indulge the digging-of-heels that persists in policing ranks. Tory learned the folly of that, but he had to be taught. The provincial Liberals, having seen that example play out at their doorstep, seem bound to learn that lesson themselves. David Nickle is The Guardian’s city hall reporter. Mobile Mabelle trailer fosters the arts, culture and a sense of community

A single drum begins to beat. A woman in a green and pink gown spinning a white parasol slowly emerges. The drum beats faster. A little girl steps up onto a tree stump and holds out her hands in silence. She is presented with a watermelon. She holds it over her head. The drum beats faster. She takes a deep breath. She heaves it to the ground with all her might. The crowd goes wild. Welcome to the annual Mabelle Park watermelon smash. This explosion of fruit and joy marked the beginning of the summer season and the launch of an exciting project that will bring the fellowship and whimsy of the MABELLEarts community to other neighborhoods in Etobicoke. The City of Toronto’s Cultural Hotspot initiative has partnered with MABELLEarts for a signature project called Mobile Mabelle. The iconic retrofitted trailer, which has been transformed into a mobile arts studio, will be hitting the road and travelling across Etobicoke this summer as staff and youth collect stories and art from residents of all ages and backgrounds. As the Mabelle community is made up predominantly of newcomers to Canada, the focus will be on migration, arrival and belonging. “We’ll be asking people

to share stories with us. Our hope is by the end of the project, the trailer is like a mobile museum that houses all of the artifacts from the places we’ve been,” said Leah Houston, artistic director of MABELLEarts. The idea was spawned after touring the trailer around the Muskoka region a couple years ago. Houston noticed it brought a sense of community to an area lacking transit infrastructure and a central gathering place. “After that we imagined it working here. Etobicoke has similar issues and communities often feel isolated,” she said. “We’re really interested in finding out where Etobicoke neighbours are

rubbing shoulders with each other, what the hidden gems are and where people go to get support.” Mobile Mabelle will be making pit stops at places like Swansea Mews, Montgomery’s Inn, and Stonegate Health

Centre. Houston has been cultivating a community-based arts practice for more than 10 years, and has transformed the once-neglected green space at Mabelle Park into a thriving home base for artists

and residents from a wide range of ages and cultures. Dances to ancient Arabic music, folk sing-a-longs and a feast of freshly baked bread and pakoras filled the event launch on June 6 with life and creativity, and showcased the vibrant spirit of MABELLEarts. Ten-year-old Amnah took a break from dancing to reflect on what challenges people like her parents, who immigrated from Eritrea and Saudi Arabia, face as newcomers. “It’s sad. You have to make new friends and you’re not going to know anyone in your neighborhood. It’s hard and scary for the first time,” she said. Her friend, 10-year-old

Salma whose parents hail from Somalia, called the Mabelle community her ‘family’. “Mabelle is our family. No matter what culture you come from, you can be artistic. You can be anything you want and you’ll still fit in,” she said. These girls and the rest of the eager youth corps, known as the ‘Mabelle Kids,’ will help facilitate activities during the Mobile Mabelle journey and show others the types of bonds that can be created through art and storytelling. “Back home you miss your family. Like me, I miss my grandma and my uncle. When they created MABELLEarts Somalians came, Eritreans came, every kind of culture came and it’s like a family reunion. It’s really nice,” Salma said. Alfredo Lopez, who came to Canada from Mexico 17 years ago, attended the launch and was introduced to the MABELLEarts community for the first time. “Often the creativity of people around the city is dormant. Events like these awaken it in others and myself,” he said. A toast of traditional Arabic sage tea was raised to Nadira Pattison, manager of arts services at the City of Toronto, for helping bring Mobile Mabelle to fruition. She said she is thrilled about the project, and thinks the roving piece of Canadiana will bring back memories similar to the ones she has of camping trips to Orillia she took with her family soon after arriving to Canada from Guyana. “It will be community members going to other communities, neighbors going to neighbors,” Pattison said. “That’s what the Hotspot is all about. People getting to know each other and the strength, beauty and diversity of this whole city.”

Kristen Kawa from Alberta was at the races to watch her son Deven compete in the men’s junior. “It’s the second BMX track in Canada, it’s a great venue,” she said. “It won’t just be used for a one-day event during the Games. We can get world cups here, you can do Canadian and provincial championships, they should definitely keep it going.” Accessibility was a common theme among supporters of the track. Ottawa resident Amy McSweeney came to watch her daughter compete in the Women’s 12-14 Open. “I’m a long time BMX fan, my daughter has raced since she was three,” she said. “We’re really excited the

Pan Am Games are here in Canada and it’s nice that all these events are so accessible to us.” Though parking for the arena is still under construction, a growing hype is overtaking the sport and a new appreciation for the BMX Centre is strong among fans. Saturday’s competition saw 96 races with competitors of all ages. Riders from the Men’s and Women’s Elite classes – who will also compete at the Games – had a chance to test out the arena before the big day in July. The BMX Canada Cup was organized by Cycling Canada, competitions #1 and #2 were held on Saturday and Sunday respectively at the Centennial Park BMX Arena while later competitions will be held in Abbotsford, BC, home of one of few BMX tracks in Canada. Etabbey architect says site can accommodate the condo >>>from page 1 and existing built form context of the ‘Mystic Pointe’ community.” Planners further called it an “over-intensification of development” on the site. Residents agreed. Fourteen residents shared concerns about the project’s proposed density, and its impact on already trafficclogged neighbourhood streets at rush hours. An existing lack of available parking – both in existing Mystic Pointe condos and on local streets – would only be exacerbated by the project, which proposes less than one parking spot per unit, resident James Phillips argued. Etabbey’s application proposes to redevelop 251 Manitoba St. with a 48-storey, mixed-use building with 548 apartment units and 108 square metres of ground-floor retail space, and 640 underground parking spaces. Architect Craig Hunter, agent for developer Etabbey, told councillors his client “believes the amount of development can be accommodated.” Etabbey appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) because of council’s absence of a decision on the file within the prescribed 120 days. “The appeals were filed one year and two months later

after fulsome community consultations and discussion with condominium boards,” Hunter said. “We’re uncertain if residents would appeal (to the OMB). No developer likes uncertainty.” ‘Fulsome’ consultations Residents took issue with Hunter’s characterization of community consultation as “fulsome”. Hunter said the developer is “flexible at looking at a reduction of height,” but noted not to the 18-storey height limit prescribed by the city. “To do an 18-storey building, developers would not develop the land,” he said. A city Site and Area Specific Policy (SASP) limits the height built on the land to 18 storeys. The SASP states up to 1,800 housing units may be developed in the entire area. Only 44 units remain available to be built in the nearly built-out Mystic Pointe community, as prescribed by the policy. Nine Mystic Pointe condo associations had initially signed a letter noting a “general level of support for redevelopment of the site,” Hunter said. Then approximately 250 residents attended a May 2014 community consultation followed by one working group meeting the following

month. One Manitoba Street condo president said his residents strongly opposed the letter condo presidents wrote in support of Etabbey’s redevelopment of the site. “Residents were against it. ‘What did you do? You made a deal with the devil.’ They lambasted us,” he said. Werner Schwarz, Mystic Pointe and Area Residents Association co-chair, spoke about “broken promises” related to the site. In 2007, former owner Camrost had received committee of adjustment approval to build a modest community of stacked townhomes there. “We believed there would be 152, four-storey stacked townhouses,” said Schwarz, showing councillors a 2007 city document. “Imagine how disgruntled we were when we learned it would be (a condo of) 18 storeys.” Yo r k S o u t h - We s t o n Councillor Frances Nunziata, and Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette urged residents to attend en masse the OMB pre-hearing, and later hearing. “If you get a lot of residents to attend, the OMB chair really looks at that,” Nunziata said. The matter goes before city council on July 7-8..

Father Serra soccer fundraiser supports SickKids research Team James Soccer Tournament held in memory of student who died of brain, spinal cord tumours TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com His young peers took to their school’s soccer fields just as little James McKeddie loved to do. Father Serra Catholic School staff and students held their second annual Team James Soccer Tournament last week in memory of the late eight-year-old who loved Thomas the Train. This year’s Team James tournament had raised nearly $10,000 as of Guardian deadline. In 2011, SickKids doctors diagnosed James with disseminated low-grade glioma, or multiple brain and spinal cord tumours. James received multiple brain surgeries and months of chemotherapy. He died in April 2013. “He never complained,” recalled his mom, Christina Brodie McKeddie of her young son’s battle, during which he lost the ability to walk. “He always had a ‘thank you for helping me,’ a smile and a high five for his entire medical team. In his tender eight years, he touched and inspired so many.”

The Islington and Eglinton avenues area school’s nearly 500 students took to the soccer fields for 45-minute games, each class representing a different country, a nod to the upcoming Pan Am Games, said principal Beverly Pavan. Last week’s thunderstorms dampened the fields, but not students’

enthusiasm. They returned to the soccer pitches Thursday. “James was very happy, always smiling and upbeat,” his mom said. “He loved Father Serra. He loved his friends. He was a bit of a ladies’ man. I had to leave the house 10 minutes early to walk him to school because all the girls would come up

to him and hug him.” Brodie McKeddie told students their tournament support and donations will help children battling brain tumours at SickKids: “Know James is sending you all a big hug from heaven.” Team James Soccer Tournament donations benefit the James Gordon Brodie McKeddie Fund for Paediatric Brain Tumour Research at SickKids and b.r.a.i.n.child family fund at the hospital. To date, James’ fund has raised more than $41,000. Remarkably, Father Serra students and their families donated $17,000 of that total during last year’s inaugural Team James Soccer Tournament. Dr. Uri Tabori, one of James’ SickKids’ neuro-oncologists, and one of a five-member doctor research team, shared with students a recent research breakthrough, made possible through James’ fund. Last year, 10 children across Canada with James’ type of tumour, were enrolled in a clinical trial. Children received a pill, rather

than chemotherapy or radiation treatments. “This is one of the first years we as physicians have hope,” Tabori told students. “Kids all over Canada can get a drug to get rid of this horrible tumour.” Tabori and his physician colleagues researched 1,000 children who had the tumour in the past 20 years to develop the drug. Teacher Gerri Lucia remembered James as “a very quiet little boy. He was very, very sweet and loving.” Lucia lauded students for their generosity. Grade 5 students Olivia Madden and Ethan Tutt, both 11, remembered their friend and classmate’s sense of humour. Both spoke of the soccer tournament’s importance in funding critical paediatric brain tumour research at SickKids. “Me and my friends would always play with James at recess,” Olivia recalled. “He always brought a car or a little train to school. He was a great friend. He was really funny.”

Dog belonging to murder suspects abandoned The dog belonging to a couple being sought on first-degree murder charges in the death of a Kleinburg man has been turned in to a Toronto Animal Services ( TAS) shelter in Etobicoke. Believed to have been abandoned in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 13, Toronto police said the dog was located tied to a post, and then turned in to TAS’ Islington Avenue and Dundas Street West location. The large brown dog was prominently featured in surveillance footage released by police Monday in connection with their murder investigation of 32-year-old Sina Parsi, who was found dead Friday, June 12 in the Jane Street and

St. Clair Avenue West area. Police are seeking 36-yearold Clyde Marshall, of New Brunswick, and 27-year-old Sabrina Chouart, of Gatineau, Quebec, on charges of firstdegree murder in connection with Parsi’s homicide. Marshall is described as white, six-feet tall, 145 pounds, with thin build, brown short hair and blue eyes. He has a tattoo on the right side of his neck and arm. South Etobicoke homeowner confronts intruder during nighttime break-in Police at 22 Division have issued a public safety alert after a truck loaded with theatrical pyrotechnics and explosives was stolen from the New Toronto Street and Kipling Avenue area.

Police in south Etobicoke’s 22 Division have issued a public safety alert following a pair of recent nighttime break-and-enters in the neighbourhood. In the alert released Monday, June 15, police report that on Saturday, June 13 an unknown man entered two residences in the Royal York Road and Dundas Street West area

between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. On one of the occasions, the man was confronted by a homeowner inside the residence before he fled the scene. The man is described as black, about six-feet tall, and was wearing a dark shirt. Police are asking local residents

to contact them immediately if they see anything in their neighbourhood that appears to be suspicious. They also urge residents to ensure their homes are secure, even while they are only out for short periods of time.

This week’s Catch 22 most wanted is once again 29-year-old Anthony Fage. Fage, who has been profiled twice before, remains wanted by police in south Etobicoke’s 22 Division on charges of: four counts of fail to comply with probation; fail to appear in court; break and enter; and fail to comply with a recognizance. Safety alert issued after truck loaded with pyrotechnics stolen Anthony Fage still wanted by police at 22 Division Police have issued a public safety alert after a truck carrying explosives was stolen in south Etobicoke over the weekend. The truck – described as a white, 2005 GMC cab-forward, roll-off truck – was parked near New Toronto Street and Kipling Avenue Sunday, June 14 when it was stolen sometime between 4:30 and 9:30 p.m. The white cube truck was carrying theatrical pyrotechnics and

explosives, which police cautioned should only be handled by qualified professionals. The truck’s Ontario licence plate number is AK54132. If located, police urged residents to call 911 immediately. TTC vows to improve service times The TTC is promising more improvements to off-peak transit service. At a press conference Monday, June 15 TTC chair Josh Colle announced 52 bus and streetcar routes, which also includes the city’s four rapid transit lines, will have 10 minutes or better service outside of the rush hour period, starting in the fall. This week the city launched a network of interactive signs intended to make the city more accessible to the thousands of visitors expected to attend the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Inspired by other cities’ experiences, the Toronto 360 Wayfinding Strategy, a.k.a TO360 includes two sizes of “info totems”, descriptive pillars depicting areas of interest and local maps, as well as “finger posts” which literally point the way to local landmarks. The new signage is found in the Entertainment District, St. Lawrence and

Doubts grow over Bombardier’s ability to deliver on new streetcars RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com TTC staff has serious doubts the manufacturer of its new streetcar fleet can meet its commitment to deliver the vehicles, even on a revised schedule. A report to be presented as an update next week to the TTC board concludes Bombardier – which has dealt with production and labour issues originating from its Thunder Bay and Mexico plants since before the first new vehicles entered service in 2014 – is highly unlikely to have 27 streetcars ready by the end of the year, far less than originally committed. The report also expresses reservations all 204 of the vehicles – ordered by the TTC in 2009 at a cost of some 1.2 billion – will be completed and handed over by May 2019. “Based on supporting documentation received to-

Next week, TTC chair Josh Colle and TTC CEO Andy Byford will head to Bombardier’s Thunder Bay facility to inspect the pace of work, TTC spokesperson Brad Ross confirmed. “They’re going to see the production line and meet with folks up there, as this is where the cars are assembled and then delivered,” said Ross over email.

GO Transit’s Lakeshore West line will undergo a number of improvements to “increase transit ridership, reduce travel times, manage congestion, connect people to jobs, and improve the local economy,” Ontario’s minister of transportation announced recently. “ We’re committed to making transit a better experience for customers and building necessary infrastructure now and for the future,” Minster Steven Del Duca said in a statement, noting that Ontario will be adding 127 roomier new GO train cars to its rail fleet over the next two years. Here in Etobicoke, improvements will include the building of a new layover facility near the Mimico GO Station, which is being constructed to meet the growing

storage needs that come with increasing service levels. The new facility will provide storage and maintenance for up to six 12-car GO trains, and will complement service improvements under the broader Regional Express Rail initiative, including faster, more frequent GO rail service, with electrification on core segments of the GO rail network service. On the Lakeshore West line, this will mean: n 15-minute two-way, all-day service, seven days a week between Burlington and Union Station n 60-minute two-way, allday service, seven days a week between Hamilton GO Centre and Union Station n 15-minute peak-direction, peak-period service between Hamilton GO Centre

The central Etobicoke milliner is one step closer to realizing her dream. “Spir ited Away” is her custom entry in the second annual Millinery Design Competition at the Queen’s Plate. The fashion-forward headpiece is espresso in colour, with brown silk trim, its crown and embellishments created with sinamay, an open-weave fabric she sculpted to give the hat height. “It is my modern interpretation of horse racing,” Findlay said or her design, which took approximately 30 hours to create. “I associate horse racing with gracefulness, movement, strength and power. I randomly placed the cords on the crown in different circular designs to represent lines and fluidity of lines.” Last year, Findlay’s design came second in the contest. Findlay and nine other George Brown College millinery graduates are semi-finalists in this year’s contest. Each designer submitted a hat created for a contemporary woman attending the Queen’s Plate. Contest finalists will be determined by online voting by the public. Voting ends June 24. Voting will determine which five designs advance to the finals. The five finalists will attend the Queen’s Plate with their designs on stage in front of a live audience and judges’ panel in the Hats and Horseshoes

Judges will mark the pieces on creativity, difficulty, use of materials and overall design. The winning designer receives $1,000. Second place wins $500. The thirdplace finisher sees $300. Findlay is an awardwinning milliner who founded her luxury brand on her online company, Hatitude. She translated her two decades’ interior design experience when she completed George Brown’s millinery program, and launched her business two years ago. All elements of her hats are handmade – “even the flowers.” “Elements of design like colour, texture, scale, rhythm and light apply to all types of design, whether interior design, fashion, landscaping or millinery,” she said. “My background in design gave me a good sense of how to manipulate space – hats are very sculptural – as well as how colours work together, how textures work together.” Findlay said the majority of her clients want a commissioned piece or a custom variation of one of her designs, sometimes in a smaller or larger size. Findlay’s hats range from $295 to $450.
