Rob Ford succumbs to rare cancer at the age of 46 OBITUARY DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Councillor Rob Ford was amalgamated Toronto’s third mayor, who in a single term of office transformed city government even as he sharply divided public opinion and through his personal life drew intense and often unwelcome international attention. He died Tuesday, March 22, after a long battle with a rare form of cancer. At the time of his death, Ford, 46, was serving as Ward 2 Councillor (Etobicoke North) – an office he originally assumed in 2000 at the age of just 30. It was the same year he married his high school sweetheart, Renata Brejniak. Ford, the youngest son of former Progressive Conservative MPP and Etobicoke businessman Doug Ford Sr., grew up in Etobicoke, attending Scarlett Heights Secondary School where he played football, and attended Carleton University to study political science. He spent a year there, joining the football squad, but not playing, and returned to Toronto, to work at the family’s label-making business, Deco Labels and Tags. Ford ran for city council and was elected in Ward 2. He quickly became known as a sharp critic of government spending – particularly of fellow councillors using office budgets for city business and matters that seemed personal. From the beginning, Ford made a point of submitting annual office budget expenses totalling only $2. It later emerged he was drawing on his personal wealth to subsidize his office, leading to a change in expense rules requiring all office expenses – even those subsidized personally – be publicly declared. He fought for small government in other ways, particularly during the council’s annual budget debate, and he became known for his combative style, often going head-to-head with colleagues. He got into hot water in 2002 when he called Ward 7 (York West) Councillor George Mammoliti a “Ginoboy,” which resulted in a human rights complaint and Mammoliti officially changing his first name to “Giorgio” in honour of his Italian heritage. He also got into trouble for more general remarks on the floor of council. He once said that he admired Chinese workers because “they worked like dogs” and argued against funding AIDS-prevention programs because he believed that one could only contract the disease as a homosexual or by using injection drugs. But Ford also became known over

his three terms as a city councillor as a politician who returned calls personally and also took steps to assist callers – whether from his own ward or not – in issues they were having with the city or Toronto Community Housing. He became a popular guest on morning drive radio, where he repeatedly called out his colleagues for profligate spending and questionable programs. In 2010, Ford kept a promise he’d repeated for three terms and ran for mayor, handily defeated his opponents. Ford’s brother, Doug Ford Jr., who also managed the mayoralty campaign, was elected to council in Ward 2 that same year. Ford ran on a simple slogan, “stop the gravy train,” arguing the city was wasting hundreds of millions of dollars and he knew where to find savings. He scrapped a $60 vehicle registration fee that was imposed by Miller’s council, and supported a plan to have the Toronto Transit Commission declared an essential service, forever removing the spectre of transit strikes in Toronto. He also instituted a core service review, looking for ways to save money through the cancellation of services.

That review, conducted by KPMG for the city, found there were far fewer savings than Ford claimed. Ford was also able to avoid strikes of inside and outside workers, obtaining concessions in tough rounds of bargaining. Other plans failed. Ford promised to phase out the municipal land transfer tax but was unable to do so. He attempted to gain approval by Toronto council for a Sheppard subway, but council didn’t go along, although council eventually approved another subway in Scarborough, to replace the aging Scarborough SRT line. He and his family hosted annual Ford Fests, where he would invite any and all to partake of beer, barbecue and live music. His support remained high among a group of voters that he called Ford Nation. During his mayoralty, Ford maintained his interest in football, coaching at Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School, frequently missing council meetings to attend games. He also operated a football charity, raising money to buy equipment for high school teams. This latter activity nearly cost him the mayoralty when, in 2012, he spoke against an Integrity Commissioner’s

report demanding that he repay donations from lobbyists made to the charity while he was a councillor. That action had Ford standing trial for conflict of interest, during which he was nearly removed from office – saved only in appeal court. The following year, issues of substance abuse overtook the mayoralty. The Toronto Star reported Ford attended a military event inebriated and used city staff to purchase alcohol for him – and then along with the website Gawker, revealed the existence of a video showing Ford smoking crack cocaine. Ford repeatedly denied having done so, even as Toronto police commenced an investigation of the allegations, until finally in the fall of that year, Ford reversed his position and admitted it during a scrum on the way to a council meeting. Because of remarks he made at the time, Toronto Council took the unusual steps of removing all but his statutory powers as mayor and transferring the rest to his deputy mayor Norm Kelly. Although he publicly claimed he was no longer using alcohol or drugs, Ford nonetheless continued to do so through early 2014, after registering

for re-election. When more videos emerged of his behaviour, Ford signed up for a rehab program and took a leave of absence. He returned in fighting form, but a cancer diagnosis in the summer of 2014 led to his last-minute withdrawal from the mayoral race. With minutes to spare before nominations closed, Ford registered for his old seat in Ward 2, while Doug Ford joined the mayor’s race. Despite undergoing chemotherapy at the time for two tumors in his abdomen, Ford easily won Ward 2, while Doug came in second to former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader and broadcaster John Tory. Ford spent his final years in municipal politics offering sharp criticism to the policies emerging from Tory’s mayoralty, undergoing successful surgery for the initial tumors and attending meetings far sooner than his doctors advised. In 2015, he announced a second set of tumors had been found, near his bladder, and entered into another round of chemotherapy, which was not successful. Ford is survived by his mother Diane, his wife Renata, his daughter Stephanie and his son Doug, brothers Randy and Doug, and sister Kathy.

Remembering Rob Ford, man of the people T

here’s a reason Rob Ford was elected Toronto’s mayor in 2010, and it’s the same one that is now being expressed across the city as news of his death sinks in. At the age of 46, Ford lost his battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer Tuesday morning; family members were at his side at Mount Sinai Hospital. With his death comes an end to a controversial and, at times, bizarre run of Toronto politics. But unpacking all of that is for another day. Today, we need to mourn and pay our respects to a man who had a profound impact on the city he loved and the people who lived in it. While we remember Rob Ford, the politician, we must also our view remember him as a father who leaves a wife and two young chilHis love of dren, aged eight and 10. Our deep Toronto was condolences go out to them and to the entire Ford family. reciprocated From the first campaign he won as councillor in Etobicoke North back in 2000, Ford always had a populist “man of the people” persona. He was genuine with that, and people gravitated toward to it. Here was a guy who unapologetically loved his sports, and his barbecues. Many in the city saw themselves in him: the average guy who was going to stick it to the so-called “elites” who thought Toronto was theirs to rule. Many voters loved that. And they loved Rob Ford. He was unbeatable in every race he ran for councillor, and when he announced he would seek the mayor’s seat in 2010, many of those “elites” scoffed. But Ford knew what they didn’t – he had deep and loyal support from those who proudly called themselves members of Ford Nation. Some of his populist success was built on tapping into resentment by those who felt excluded by the megacity’s political system – particularly those in Scarborough, North York and Etobicoke, who felt they’d been treated as second-class citizens since amalgamation. Ford may have exploited that feeling. A feeling which resonated with him personally. Rob Ford was what he was, and he always fought hard for what he believed in. He will be greatly missed by the city that he loved.

column

Rob Ford: a lesson in not making assumptions I think I first met Rob Ford in former Etobicoke Councillor Doug Holyday’s office on the second floor of Toronto City Hall, back in 2000. Rob had just won an election up in Ward 2, and he’d come down to see Holyday, bringing along his big brother Doug before settling in. It’s funny, at first I thought Doug might be the new councillor – he was the aggressively friendly one, while Rob stood politely back: smiling a bit nervously, not saying much, rocking from one foot to the other. He was an easy guy to underestimate; an easy guy not to notice. And the first time we met, I did both. Mea culpa. Over the 16 years between his arrival at City Hall and his death in a hospital bed just a few hundred metres north and west of it, Ford taught me otherwise. He came to City Hall with two clear and simple objectives: if not to reduce the size of government here,

david nickle the city then highlight where it was overstuffed, and to provide customer service to his constituents. He did this both by taking lessons from his father, former Progressive Conservative MP and labelmaking entrepreneur Doug Ford Sr. He didn’t win votes at Toronto Council. But he did win votes in his northwestern Etobicoke ward, and then, improbably, across the entire city in 2010, and again in his Ward 2 stomping grounds in 2014. His simple, straightforward narrative caught on. It made him unbeatable, at least electorally. Of course, Rob Ford was entirely fallible, as beatable as anyone both politically and personally. For the first couple of years as mayor, Ford ran a tight ship on council, winning many votes and pushing his small

government agenda even when fiscal and organizational realities seemed to make that impossible. The vehicle registration tax was repealed; former mayor David Miller’s baby Transit City, cancelled; garbage collection west of Yonge Street was contracted out. In his first year, Ford used the last Miller-era budget surplus to orchestrate a property tax freeze. It all fell apart. But we know all about that. His plan to build a subway on Sheppard Avenue East didn’t survive council. A conflict of interest trial nearly cost Ford his job. A video of Ford smoking crack cocaine revealed a substance abuse problem of profound and humiliating depth, along with terrible displays of rage and racism and vulgarity that put Toronto in the crosshairs of international late-night television comedy. You could make a joke out of it, and many did. But really, it was sad and hurtful,

and at times very frightening and dangerous. And then there was the cancer. You can’t make a joke out of that. It tortured him for awhile, teased him with hope and, as is cancer’s wont, came back for what turned out to be the kill. The last time I talked with Rob Ford was a couple months ago, when he’d come back to City Hall in the midst of bouts of the chemotherapy that couldn’t save him. We did a little interview outside a committee room, and talked a bit. It was a nice conversation. He told me the doctors thought the chemo was working, that he was feeling pretty dragged out and often felt quite ill, but at least this time his hair wasn’t falling out. He took that as a good sign, and I agreed it might just be. Mea culpa.

Ford Nation remembers Rob’s ‘personal touch’ CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Perhaps nowhere in the city did news of Rob Ford’s passing hit harder today than in the heart of Ford Nation in Etobicoke’s Ward 2. Ford faithfully – and sometimes controversially – served the Etobicoke North constituency at city council for a decade from 2000 until his election as mayor in 2010. He took up the Ward 2 mantle again in 2014 after dropping out of the mayoralty race following his cancer diagnosis, a decision his local supporters stood behind wholeheartedly, re-electing him to his old seat with 58.75 per cent of the vote. Many of those same constituents remembered Ford fondly for his “personal touch” to local politics on Tuesday, just hours after news broke that he’d lost his long battle with a rare form of cancer. “I am saddened by his passing, because back in the years he was our councillor, before becoming mayor, I needed some assistance and I went to his office and he was there to help me,” Ward 2 constituent Lorraine Taylor said Tuesday at

the Rexdale Shopping Plaza. “Since then, I’ve always looked up to him, because he was a very caring man. I am really very sad, because he’s like a family member. That’s how hard it was when I heard.” Fellow Ward 2 constituent Bill White called Ford “the best mayor

we ever had”. “To me, he was a great man. It’s too bad his lifestyle was the way it was, otherwise he could have been great for the city moving forward,” White said of Ford’s scandal-plagued mayoralty, during which he notoriously admitted to using crack

cocaine. “Forty-six years old, it’s a shame. Yes, he had personal problems, but I never put a person down for that...I feel sorry for his wife and kids, but they’ll get a lot of support. They have a great family, the Fords.” Ford leaves behind his mother, Diane, wife, Renata, daughter, Stephanie, and son, Doug, as well as sister, Kathy, and brothers, Randy and Doug, who himself served as Ward 2’s councillor during Ford’s tenure as mayor. Ford is predeceased by his father, Douglas Ford Sr., a former Progressive Conservative MPP and Etobicoke businessman who founded the family’s label-making business, Deco Labels and Tags. “It was a shock, he’s only 46 and he’s got small kids. Very sad,” said Dorothy Chase, who, like many residents The Guardian spoke with Tuesday, wished to extend her sympathies to the Ford family. “He always helped anybody that he could, and I think he really had a good heart. Sure, he made some mistakes, but everyone makes mistakes. God rest his soul. I hope he’s in a peaceful place up in heaven now with his father.”

“I’ve been following the news and heard that his family was with him at hospital. I was praying to God, to Allah for him...He was a nice person to me. Whatever people brought up against him, that was his personal matters, and I think he was a very nice person. I liked him and I have sympathy for his family.” – Muhammed Nazim

“I was very sad to hear it. He was a nice man who worked really hard for the people. My mother lives in Etobicoke North and would always go to his Ford Fest barbecues and she supported him and voted for him. He was a really good man.” – Erica Williams

“I didn’t know him, but I don’t think he did anything wrong. I think he should have just admitted everything he did wrong. I feel bad that he passed away. His wife and children must feel devastated. I feel for them.” – Violet McKinnell

‘My heart is ripped out. I loved Rob so much’: Doug Ford Rob Ford’s colleagues, friends pay tribute to the former mayor, who died Tuesday at age 46 TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Community advocate John Anga tried unsuccessfully for years to get city permission to install bus shelters at an outdoor ice rink in Summerlea Park in north Etobicoke so neighbourhood kids could lace up protected from win-

ter’s chill. The longtime Thistletown Residents’ Association member got it in 2011 after his longtime friend, Rob Ford, became Toronto’s mayor. Anga was reeling, distraught by Ford’s death Tuesday after an 18-month battle with a rare, aggressive cancer. He was 46.

“I cried my eyes out,” Anga said Tuesday from Anga’s Farm and Nursery, which he owns. “My uncle died yesterday. But I cried more for Rob. He was such a friend of mine. Despite what anybody said, his heart was in the right place.” Anga’s friendship with Ford predated the latter’s election

as Ward 2 councillor in north Etobicoke in 2000. “I remember Rob as a friend,” Anga reiterated. “It didn’t matter what time of day it was, he would always call me right back. a statement Tuesday night to CP24. “My heart is ripped out. I loved Rob so much. I took care of him and protected him from the day he was born,” Doug Ford’s statement said. “I miss him so much. He was my best friend.” Ford’s nephew, Michael >>>man, page 32

Etobicoke’s Richard Graves ran 10 races a year, raising money for local charities. He passed away at his home earlier this year after a brief illness CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com

Richard Graves runs in the 1994 World Veteran Road Racing Championships. Known as ‘The Charity Crusader’ the 82-year-old who raced to raise funds for various charities, passed away on Feb. 13.

ichard “The Charity Crusader” Graves has run his last race. The 82-year-old fundraising phenom died at his West Mall home on Feb. 13 after a brief illness, but his “bighearted” legacy will live on. “It’s not often that any of us meet an individual like Richard Graves. We called him a marvel, we called him awe-inspiring, and we could never thank him enough,” said Jennifer Jeynes of Etobicoke’s Reach for the Rainbow, just one of the charities Graves spent the last 11 years of his life fundraising for through his annual Richard Graves Charity Challenge Run-aThon. “We had the distinct pleasure of knowing Richard for a few years, and his spirit and determination were a constant reminder of why engaging with your community and connecting with people is so vital to a true sense of belonging.” Born in Chester, Nova Scotia in 1933, Graves began his competitive running career in 1953 – placing 42nd out of 162 competitors in the Boston Marathon. From there, he went on to run in more than 900 races all over North America, the United Kingdom and Europe, where family friend Marta Voege said he consistently finished in the top three in his age category. It was upon turning 71 in 2005, however, that Graves truly made his mark by merging his passions for running and charity through the establishment of The Richard Graves Charity Challenge. Through the annual runa-thon, he embarked to run in a full 10 races during the May-to-September running season every year in order to raise money for charity – a feat that required both stamina and coordination. “Richard’s fundraising activities required

organizational dynamics, from choosing charities, scheduling runs, soliciting pledges, and funding sundry costs – most often from his own pocket,” Voege said of Graves’ dedication to the cause. “They also demanded rigorous training, which Richard, at the age of 82, continued four times a week, all-year round, regardless of weather conditions or temperature. “But most of all, they took courage, commitment, determination and a true concern for those in need.” In its 11-year history, The Richard Graves Charity Challenge raised more than $35,000 for worthy organizations hand-picked by Graves – Reach for the Rainbow, Variety Village, March of Dimes, Children’s Wish Foundation, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation among his favourites. “I’ve had a great life running. I’ve been all over this country, and even in Europe and the United States running, so I got to a point when I turned 71 and I said to myself, ‘I’ve got lots out of it, so it would be nice to help others with the abilities I have with my feet,’” Graves said in an interview with The Guardian back in 2013, upon receiving the The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. “I choose the smaller charities, because they don’t get the money to work with that the bigger ones do.” Graves’ dedication to giving back did not go unnoticed. Mingled amongst the more than 600 race medallions that adorn the walls of the West Mall apartment he shared with Daphne, his wife of 45 years, Graves proudly displayed the numerous awards he’d received over the years, including: an Ontario Senior Achievement Award, granted to him in 2007 by the Lieutenant Governor General of Ontario; a commemorative photo

plaque taken of him and Hockey Hall of Famer Doug Gilmour at the 2008 Toronto Challenge in support of long-term care facilities in the city; a 2009 Excellence in Volunteering Award given to him by thenmayor David Miller; a 2009 Community Recognition Award he received from then-Etobicoke Centre MPP Donna Cansfield; recognition of his 2009 induction into the Chester, Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in Nova Scotia; his 2013 Reach for the Rainbow Achievement Award; and last, but not least, his 2013 Etobicoke Guardian Urban Hero Award, among many others. More than those achievements, though, Graves’ daughter Tricia said what she and her family most want her father remembered for was his “big heart.” “He loved animals. He would go out at least once day with his pockets full of peanuts to feed the squirrels. After he passed, I had to go through some of his things to look for his identification, and sure enough, in two different coats, his pockets were full of peanuts,” she laughed. “So, he was a giver in all sorts of ways. I’ll always remember him for that big heart he had.” Even after his passing, Graves’ big heart continues to give back. At a celebration of life held in his honour at an Etobicoke legion on March 12, Graves’ family and friends raised $1,050 for Reach for the Rainbow in his memory. “Richard was a true inspiration, and we were so humbled by his decision to honor us as his selected charity,” Jeynes said. “We will truly miss Reach for the Rainbow’s own Charity Crusader, and our friend, Richard Graves.” Graves is survived by his wife Daphne, daughter Tricia, son-in-law Tom, and beloved dog Mandy Bella.

ADVERTORIAL

The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last three years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis.

Builder chosen for Etobicoke General’s new patient tower William Osler Health System named Etobicoke Healthcare Partnership (EHP) Tuesday, March 22 as its preferred proponent to build Etobicoke General Hospital’s new, fourstorey patient tower. EHP will design, build, finance and maintain the new patient tower. It was one of three short-listed teams chosen after an extensive evaluation process led by Infrastructure Ontario. “This is a monumental step forward in our journey toward the revitalization of Osler’s Etobicoke General Hospital,” John Davies, chair of William Osler Health System’s board, said in a statement Tuesday. Osler’s redevelopment of the decades-old hospital in the Hwy. 27 and Finch Avenue West area expands access to medical services most needed in the community, Davies said. “With today’s announce-

ment, we are moving even closer to the completion of a new, state-of-the-art wing that will help expand access to programs and services — like emergency and women’s and children’s care — that are needed most by this growing community.” Construction is set to begin this spring shortly after EHP’s

contract has been finalized. Osler is undertaking a significant revitalization of Etobicoke General, built in 1972, to meet the community’s growing demands, hospital officials said. The new, four-storey tower will add approximately 250,000 square feet of space >>>new, page 13

‘Toronto Passion Play’ celebrates quarter century at Church on the Queensway Two-hour theatrical production is in final year with new play to be produced next year TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com T h e p o p u l a r “ To r o n t o Passion Play” celebrates its 25th anniversary this Easter weekend. It is the last chance to see this particular two-hour production, which focuses on Jewish culture, tradition and law. Ne x t ye a r, C h r i s t i a n Performing Arts, Church on the Queensway’s production arm, will write and perform a completely new production of the Easter Story. The cast and crew of 250 people perform Mirvishcalibre song-and-drama sequences, complete with professional lighting, sound and stage direction, accompanied by the Toronto Wind Youth Orchestra. There are even pyrotechnics, and a live donkey that leads the Palm Sunday processional scene.

Costumed actors and the set itself transport an audience of 3,100 per show to Biblical times. Gospel of John filmmakers donated the costumes, sets and props from their 2003 feature film, shot in Toronto and Almeria and Aldalucia, Spain, to the Etobicoke church’s production. The “Toronto Passion Play” tells the familiar story of the final hours of the life of Jesus of Nazareth, as well as John’s baptism of Jesus, the Sermon on the Mount, Palm Sunday, the Last Supper, the crucifixion and resurrection. “It’s a unique telling of the story from a Jewish perspective. The narrator is the high priest (Annas) who is an enemy of Jesus and sympathizes with him,” said director Arthur Wachnik, who also plays Annas, Monday just before a dress rehearsal. “It is told through the per-

spective of Jewish culture and law. It focuses on the Jewishness of Jesus.” “Toronto Passion Play” will be performed on Good Friday and Saturday, March 26 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Easter Sunday at 4 p.m. Tickets cost $5. Visit www. cpacentre.org to purchase tickets in advance of the performance. The Good Friday 2 p.m. performance was sold out, as of Guardian print deadline Wednesday. Doors open 90 minutes prior to each performance. It’s general admission seating only. “I think it gets better every year,” Wachnik said of the play. “Artists of faith are attracted to it. A lot of artists don’t get to show their faith with 15,000 people a day in a worshipful and meaningful way while giving back to people.” People make the “Toronto

Passion Play” an Easter tradition, many driving from across the Greater Toronto Area and the Golden Horseshoe to see it, said Rev. Ed Clements, an assistant pastor at Church on the Queensway. Clements said for some, the story of Jesus is a “seminal moment in history and a historical reality”; for others, it is about faith. “We care about people’s (eternal life),” Clements said. “All of us in this life have to ask, ‘Am I going to accept what Jesus said about Himself or not?’” Some bring friends and family to see it two, three and four times. “There is no reason a church production should be anything less than stellar. We want to do it with excellence. It’s a Mirvish/ Broadway-calibre production,” Clements added. Per for mers include

Carmine Crincoli ( Jesus), Nigel Guiste (Nicodemis), Jodi Jahnke (Mary Magdalene), Mike Goral (Caiaphas) and Margaret Sweatman (Leah). “Behold the Lamb of God,/ Behold the Lamb of God,/ Behold the Lamb of God,” sings Jesus’ mother, Mary, at His feet as He dies on the Cross. It is one of the most emotionally moving and stirring moments of the theatrical production. Crincoli, a parishioner of the Church on the Queensway for 20 years, has played Jesus in “Toronto Passion Play” every year but one during the past decade. He is not a professional actor. Memorization of his many lines doesn’t faze him. But he acknowledged he approaches portraying Jesus “with definite respect and a healthy fear.”

“It is intimidating,” said Crincoli, noting people, whether Christian, Catholic or Jewish, have grown up with an image of Jesus Christ in their minds. “I’ve been a Christian all my life. Christ dwells in me. I study the Bible to really understand what Jesus was like, how He’d behave and act in situations. It’s a lifetime of work making God’s Word come to life.” Crincoli grows his beard out after Christmas every year to play Jesus at Easter. “The whole world is the reason I do it,” he said. “I have come to know Christ as my Lord and Saviour. I know God truly loves me. I can’t believe someone would have done that for me.” Tickets cost $5. Visit www. cpacentre.org to purchase tickets in advance of the performance.

Why choose a Realtor? There comes a point in many homeowners’ lives when they are faced with a decision to downsize. Whether you are an empty nester, retired or looking for a property with low maintenance, moving into a smaller home could be the right move for you. There are seller’s markets and there are buyer’s markets. Realtors can help you strike when the iron is hot and advise when it is best to wait to make a move. Owner of four Cane Corsos charged under Dog Owner’s Liability Act The owner of four Cane Corsos that allegedly killed an 81-year-old man’s 15-pound dachshund in Centennial Park earlier this month has been charged under the Dog Owner’s Liability Act. Police arrested Kiriakos (Kirk) Nendos, 46, on March 15 at his central Etobicoke home and charged him criminally with mischief – interfere with lawful enjoyment of property. Toronto Animal Services accompanied police to Nendos’ home and seized five of Nendos’ Cane Corsos. The dogs were off leash at the time of the alleged attack, police said. Mary Lou Leiher, a program manager with Toronto Animal Services, confirmed Nendos has also been charged under the Dog Owner’s Liability Act, a provincial statute. Nendos faces four charges under the act of fail to exercise reasonable precautions to prevent a dog from attacking a person or domestic animal. “We applied the Dog Owners’ Liability Act because we needed to be able to get

the dogs off the street,” Leiher said. “We obtained a search warrant to seize the dogs.” Four off-leash Cane Corsos allegedly attacked a senior’s 14-year-old dachshund, “Dacky”. The dachshund died at the scene. Toronto Animal Services has taken custody of Nendos’ five Corsos, and is conducting an investigation pending Nendos’ trial. “We have five dogs in custody, but there were four dogs in the park that day,” Leiher said. “We’re not sure which dog was not involved. We also want to assess the dogs’ behaviour.” Following its investigation,

Toronto Animal Services will make a recommendation to the provincial court. Leiher said provincial courts ruling on Dog Owner Liability Act charges will often order either a control order or a destruction order. “Control orders include muzzling or ordering a run to be built in a backyard, according to how the incident happened,” she said. Destruction orders are applied in the most serious cases, she added. A judge can issue a fine as high as $10,000 and a jail term of as long as six months upon conviction under the act, Leiher said.

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

to the site. The agency is gauging public feedback for purchasing surplus Toronto District School Board lands in the vicinity of the Keelesdale station site located near Keele Street and Eglinton Avenue West. In order to construct the additional entrance, removal of a mature tree is required with the work set to begin before the end of the month. A meeting takes place 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at York Memorial Collegiate Institute, at 2690 Eglinton West.

Pearson (UP) Express has resigned from overseeing the service, Metrolinx has confirmed. Kathy Haley is the first senior executive to pay the price for the service’s low ridership, which resulted in scores of near-empty UP trains before fares were slashed earlier this month. Since the service launched right before last year’s Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, it was excoriated for the high fares that seemed to price out regular transit riders in favour of business-class travellers seeking a rapid transportation option between downtown and Toronto Pearson airport.

Surveillance was stepped up at Toronto-area transit stations in the wake of the devastating terrorist attacks in Brussels this week. Metrolinx confirmed it has boosted security at Union Station following the coordinated attacks at Brussels Airport, and later on within the city’s metro system, which resulted in over 30 known dead as of Tuesday. The TTC also posted an advisory, advising vigilance and to report any suspicious activity to TTC employees or police.

Back in 2011, then-Toronto mayor Rob Ford was present at the opening of a new shelter beside the ice rink at Summerlea Park. Community activist John Anga tried to get city approval for the project for years, but was unsuccessful until Rob Ford took office.

‘Man of the people’: Ford was known for listening to constituents’ concerns

>>>from page 7 Ford, a Toronto District School Board trustee, posted a tribute to Twitter. “Uncle Rob, You have fought the good fight long enough and now can rest in peace,” he wrote. Councillor Vince Crisanti, who represents the ward north of Ford’s Ward 2 and was one of Ford’s deputy mayors, counted Ford a “great friend” and said his approach to his job holds lessons for all. “He rolled up his sleeves. He always put everyone first before himself,” Crisanti said. “He would never hesitate to help. I believe this man set a new standard in public service we can all learn from. He cared so much about everyone.” Crisanti said Toronto Community Housing tenants “would line up for him” in meetings Ford held monthly at the Etobicoke Civic Centre to listen to their concerns. Ford’s mantra “Respect for Taxpayers” wasn’t just a slogan, Crisanti said. “He believed in it. He actually walked the talk.” Former veteran councillor Peter Milczyn, who shared 14 years with Ford on Toronto City Council, called Ford “a man of the people.” “Certainly, Rob will always be remembered as a man of the people who worked tirelessly in responding to

people all over the city who had problems big and small,” Milczyn, now EtobicokeLakeshore Liberal MPP, said from Queen’s Park. “His love for the people across the city was welldemonstrated. He was dedicated to helping the people of Toronto.” Milczyn said Ford was genial with his colleagues. “Day to day, Rob was just a regular guy. Sometimes, we’d joke around at work, talk about our families,” Milczyn said. Etobicoke political veteran Doug Holyday, who was mayor Ford’s deputy mayor, said he hoped Ford would be remembered for the “good things” he did. Ford often referred to Holyday as a mentor. Now-retired, Holyday cited the privatization of garbage collection across half the city as part of Ford’s legacy as mayor. The move saved Toronto $20 million, he said. “Rob got a good deal for the workers, a good deal for taxpayers and got back management rights that had been given away by others,” Holyday said. “It was a strategy others didn’t have the fortitude to do. You had to force the issue in January when the union wanted it to come to a head in June when it could

affect day camps, swimming pools, parks. It meant the city was not held for ransom at every contract. “We led the way. It was the right thing to do.” Toronto police Supt. Ron Taverner, unit commander of 23 Division in north Etobicoke, said Ford steadfastly supported the police. “He was incredibly supportive of us,” Taverner said. “Even in hospital, he was taking constituents’ calls. Anything related to a policing issue, he’d leave me a message late at night. “Right up until the end, Rob was taking care of the community.” Memorials to Ford grew t h r o u g h o u t Et o b i c o k e Tuesday, on the front lawn of the home Ford shared with his wife, Renata, and children, Stephanie and Douglas, and in Douglas B. Ford Park, named after his father, near his mother Diane’s house. Hundreds of so-called “Ford Nation” supporters, and others, gathered at City Hall and at civic centres across the city, including in Etobicoke, to sign books of condolence. Others wrote messages in sidewalk chalk outside city hall. Flags at city hall and city offices flew at half staff. No funeral details have been announced.

Col. J.E.L. Streight’s residence at 68 Cordova Avenue before it was demolished.

Col. J.E.L. Streight led an honourable life in Islington Streight fought in Boer War, Natal-Zululand Rebellion, First World War Many of you are familiar with the Col. J.E.L. Streight branch of the Royal Canadian Legion at 110 Jutland Rd. or perhaps have seen Streight Lane that runs east off Kipling Avenue just north of Bloor Street West. But who was Col. Streight and why was he chosen for these honours? John Everett Lyle Streight was born in Islington in 1880 and lived on Cordova Avenue his entire life. His father, David, owned a lumber and construction business on the west side of Cordova Avenue, north of the CPR tracks. The family home was adjacent to the business. Streight joined the army at age 18, and enjoyed a 46-year military career. When the Boer War started, he joined the Canadian Mounted Rifles as a trooper. He served throughout the war and afterwards joined the South African Constabulary until 1906. When the NatalZululand Rebellion broke out, he again saw active service and was badly wounded.

denise harris history corner After recovering in England, he returned to Islington in 1908 where he took over this father’s lumber business and was given a commission in the Governor General’s Body Guard. When the First World War began, Streight transferred to the 3rd Battalion and served in France as a Captain. At Ypres, he was a company commander until captured by the enemy. He was sent to 13 POW camps in Germany, where he managed to escape seven times. When repatriated to England, Streight was decorated by King George V with the Military Cross for his service at Vimy and promoted to major. Streight came home to Islington to work in his business once again and to serve in the Governor General’s Body Guard. In 1921, he retired from the lumber business and ran for federal office as a Liberal, but was defeated. He was made lieutenant-

colonel in 1927, appointed Aide-de-Camp to the Governor General in 1931, and promoted to full Colonel in 1933. Streight ran for office for the federal Liberals again in 1935 and won by 60 votes. In 1937, he was honoured to command the Canadian contingent attending the coronation of King George VI in London. Streight retired from politics in 1940 and from the military in 1944. Around this time, he also built a new house on Cordova. In 1949, he married Margaret Elizabeth Galloway, who was 33 years his junior. Streight died in 1955, remembered for his “exemplary life” and having led “one of the most adventurous careers of any man in Canada’s public life” while never forgetting his roots in Islington. He is buried in Park Lawn Cemetery.
