This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. In honour of this anniversary, The Etobicoke Guardian commemorates those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country in today’s Remembrance Day-themed edition. To celebrate, we asked for the help of our readers, and they came through by opening their hearts to tell their stories through letters, postcards, photos and personal recollections. In today’s edition on pages 30 and 31, we honour our brave, our fallen, our survivors and you, our readers, who made this endeavour possible. We hope you find the value in these personal stories, which should remain as a lasting legacy to those who fought for our freedom.

Book retraces couple’s war-time love Love in the Air tells the story of Helen Reeder’s time as a TTC worker during the war and her correspondence with fiancé Harry Culley RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The Toronto Transportation Commission needed to replace more than 600 of its labour force drafted to fight in the Second World War, so it turned to women. The predecessor to the Toronto Transit Commission, called the Toronto Transportation Commission, needed to keep service running so a growing ridership could get to factory and manufacturing jobs in support of the war effort. Like other traditionally male-dominated industries decimated by fighting overseas, the TTC began hiring women. From the TTC’s official numbers, by 1944, 386 women were bus operators and streetcar conductors. Another 256 were employed for administration and bookkeeping functions, which up to that point had been performed by men. Helen Reeder was one of them. Originally from Saskatchewan, Helen migrated east to Ottawa where she worked in the federal Ministry of Munitions and Supplies, helping to co-ordinate steel shipments to factories all over the country. At a military reception in 1942, she met a handsome young enlistee from Toronto. Harry Culley was a clarinettist who had signed up to join the Royal Canadian Air Force military band, one of five such outfits sent overseas to raise morale among the troops by playing thousands of concerts while the war raged on. Reeder and Culley were instantly smitten; following a year of courtship they were engaged. But the conflict intervened on their burgeoning relationship and Harry was shipped off to England in 1943. There he would spend the next two-and-half years an ocean away from his fiancé. Over that time the two exchanged more than 600 letters, as documented in Love in the Air, a book written by their daughter Joanne Culley and published by Friesen Press. “I started reading the letters and realized a hundred in there might be a story which might be of interest because they had a quite detailed

account of what was going on during that time,” said Culley, who re-discovered her parents’ letters while cleaning out the contents of the family home following her father’s death in 2010. With Harry stationed in the coastal city of Bournemouth, England, Helen moved to Toronto to be closer to her future in-laws, themselves musicians. She eventually found a job with the TTC working at its Hillcrest headquarters as a cashier and bookkeeper. The job gave Helen her independence and a good wage, and she worked off-hours, usually late-night shifts. In her spare time she composed letters and care packages for Harry. “She was kind of embarrassed because she had a pretty good war,” Culley said. “She had her own money for shopping and the movies or going out with her friends.” Helen wrote she took great satisfaction in making sure her accounts were balanced at the end of every shift and was forced to deal with

casual harassment and unwanted approaches from male colleagues. At one point she visited a beloved co-worker who was wounded in the war and paralyzed. “He’ll be there indefinitely,” Helen writes in a letter dated April 1, 1945. “I always feel so glad that I’m able to walk around when I leave a hospital.” Helen is also present for a pivotal moment in the TTC’s history when plans are officially unveiled in 1945 for a rapid transit system, the first of its kind for the city. She mentions to a colleague the new Yonge subway line will be modelled after the London Underground so “’Harry will feel right at home when he returns.’” Even with military censors going through every piece of their correspondence, Harry’s thoughts remain largely preserved. Locations of famous military engagements are stricken, yet he is able to express his opinions without much fear of censure. He questions the decision

to drop atomic bombs on Japan. He relates a scene where his band breaks out into spontaneous performance for recently freed British prisoners of war. He learns of the horrors of the concentration camps as the Allies begin to liberate Western Europe from the Nazis. And while there is always the very real concern of being hit by a stray bomb, Harry’s toughest struggle is waiting for when he will be reunited with his future wife. For Culley, it was an emotional experience creating a narrative of her parents’ relationship. In addition to the correspondence printed verbatim from the original letters, Culley also crafts scenes that are fictional, but based on real events. “I had to distance myself from my memories as them, as parents, and think of them as young people in love, sort of similar to my own kids who would be about the same age,” she said. It wouldn’t be until early 1946 when Harry received the OK to return to Canada. The couple was soon married. With the men coming back to the jobs they left, nearly all the women at the TTC were laid off. Helen lost her own position after her wedding thanks to the TTC policy forbidding the employment of married women. She would eventually find work as a secretary. Harry continued to play music. More than 70 years after they were written, the letters now reside in Culley’s office in Peterborough, and there are plans to donate them to the Canadian War Museum in a few years. She still marvels at the fact her dad was able to hang onto all the letters. “What makes this unusual is both sides of the correspondence were there and my father carried all of them around in his knapsack,” Culley said. “His buddies kept saying, ‘Oh toss them out, why are you lugging those around?’ He couldn’t bear to throw them away.”

Honour veterans and their memories on Remembrance Day

Write us

M

emories. They return to us through thoughts, feelings and familiar sounds and smells. Memories can reflect happy times. They can convey sadness. Memories can conjure up a time, decades old, or they can be from yesterday. But what if those familiar thoughts, feelings, sounds and smells, returned you to a time of war? A time when you thought you wouldn’t survive, weighed down with feelings of dread, by the sounds of the dying and the smell of death? Would you want to remember? This week, The York Guardian commemorates the memories of Canadian soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice from the First World War, the Second World War, the Korean War and the recent conflict in Afghanistan and all peacekeeping missions leading up to next week’s Remembrance Day. But also, we remember those who are still alive and are able, our view some willingly and some grudgto recount a time when Readers share ingly, only the present moment mattered. memories in When a slight move, or slow special section reaction meant the difference between life and death. Within these pages we have information on Remembrance Day ceremonies in your community. We urge you to attend one, speak to a veteran (so few remain from the Second World War) and talk to your kids about it. This is an especially important year as it marks the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. More than 45,000 Canadian soldiers gave their lives and another 55,000 were wounded in the conflict. Along with stories in the pages of our newspaper, our special section online can be found at bit.ly/ TorontoRemembers The section shares the memories of our readers and the stories passed down by their loved ones: A black and white photo of two young lovers in a time of uncertainty, with only first names exchanged. A friend buried at sea. A mystery solider who died of pneumonia. A cheeky nurse who kissed a solider while he lay in delirium in an army hospital bed. You will read stories of friendship and laughter and letter writing. Remembrance Day is always important, but putting a face and a name to the stories of war bring it a little closer to home.

A reading of the taxation tea leaves

Y

ou can read a lot of different things in the tea leaves after a big election and there’s lots of readings a fortune teller can pull from this last one. For instance, one might say the election of Justin Trudeau as prime minister represents a generational shift, not just in Ottawa, but in the electorate. Young, inexperienced and optimistic Justin Trudeau came into power despite old, battle-scarred and pessimistic Stephen Harper’s best efforts, and it’s hard not to imagine a group of voters born in the 1990s reacting badly to messaging that someone who at least looks about their age is “just not ready.” Millennials, after all, have heard the same thing repeated ad nauseam since they were in short pants by their entitled elders. Millennials, like the

david nickle the city rest of us, have heard a lot of other things repeated. They’ve heard that government deficits are a cardinal sin, that taxes are best kept low, and that government itself is best kept small and relatively inactive. Based on last month’s federal election and the last few elections in which younger voters have been able to have their say, it’s seeming as though those notions are getting just as chilly a reception as that “not ready” attack ad. Although a conservative himself, Toronto Mayor John Tory was a beneficiary of this post-boom bump, and in his early months, governed in that knowledge, boosting existing services and promising new ones – actively reengaging city government

in city life. But as a conservative, Tory along with many of his council colleagues are showing oldee timee reluctance to square the circle – to do the things that in the past have been understood as politically unpopular: raise property taxes higher than the rate of inflation, consider new ways to bring in revenue such as road tolls… to increase revenue, in other words, to match aspiration. Very soon, Tory and his supporters on council are going to find a need to do this. Just one of Tory’s enhancements – a return to higher levels of TTC service to undo the transit cuts made in the Ford years – will cost an additional $90 million to fund, fully rolled-out in 2016. An inflationary property tax increase (the maximum that Tory has promised) will raise $50 million.

If that were the only pressure it would be bad enough, but of course it’s not alone. The Toronto Police Service will be costing the city more, and another promise, the mayor’s Poverty Reduction Strategy, is rendered meaningless if there is not significant spending in social services added to the 2016 budget. Taxpayers will also soon have to begin paying for the loan the city made out to itself, to help balance the otherwise askew 2015 budget. Would Toronto taxpayers and voters be willing to look at paying more for better services and a more cohesive city? The tea leaves, imperfect an indicator as they are, suggest they might just. rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT Community groups have expressed opposition to the plan, accusing Metrolinx of creating a “super bridge” to replace the Davenport Diamond rail crossing that will have the same effect as dropping the Gardiner Expressway into the neighbourhood. Metrolinx is set to begin an environmental assessment study for the bridge, and the groups hope the city’s report will provide an “informed second opinion” on the plan. Metrolinx is also working to visually forecast the bridge’s impact on neighbourhoods. It previously released a 3D model of the bridge from an overhead view and intends to create a street-level depiction of the bridge. Tower closes Bay and Adelaide wTrump

Group awarded for saving Mimico Station during ‘heritage crisis’

“I’m not particularly a railway buff as such, but I recognize the importance for Canada of the railway. Without the railway, Canada would not exist - it brought the east and west together and it made it a whole country, so it is very important.”

The Mimico Station Community Organization earns Architectural Conservancy of Ontario award for advocacy CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com

A

tireless group of local heritage supporters will be honoured by the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario (ACO) later this month for their advocacy on behalf of the nearly century-old Mimico Station. The Mimico Station Community Organization (MSCO) will be presented with the ACO’s A.K. Sculthorpe Award for Advocacy – an award that recognizes “an individual, group, or established non-profit organization that, at a critical point, has achieved exemplary success in a significant heritage crisis” – at a ceremony Nov. 13. That MSCO is receiving this year’s award, said MSCO President Peter McHale, is a recognition its members’ “exemplary success in advocacy for the preservation, restoration and repurposing of the Mimico Station.” “It was very exciting news for us,” he said, noting the prestigious award is a “clear recognition” of all the volunteers – from project initiators and architects, to the group’s executive members and many other contributors – who have worked since MSCO’s formation in 2004 to save Mimico Station. Originally built by the Grand Trunk Railway over a period extending from 1916 to 1917, Mimico Station was first used as a passenger terminal near what is now Mimico GO Station off Royal York Road (then Church Street) – a purpose it also served for the Canadian National Railway (CN) up until the late 1960s. After that, it remained in use as a sleeping quarters for railway workers, but soon fell into disuse and disrepair, before ultimately being abandoned by CN in 1989. Despite its decrepit state, it wasn’t until the early 2000s that Mimico Station first came under threat of demolition upon being sold to new owners who expressed a desire to tear it down in order to expand their industrial operations.

Photo/PETER C. MCCUSKER

Members of the Mimico Station Community Organization (MSCO) including Sandy Eathorne, left, Angela Barnes, Richard McQuade, Roswita Busskamp, Peter McHale, and architects Marjut Dunker and Klaus Dunker get together Friday in front of the Mimico Station in Coronation Park. The MSCO recently received the A.K. Sculthorpe Award for Advocacy from the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario.

It was at that point in 2004, said McHale, that the first members of what is now the MSCO began to rally together with a mandate to save Mimico Station from demolition and return it to its original beauty. “First off, we had to persuade the owner not to demolish the building. Then we had to arrange the actual, physical moving of the building – twice,” he explained. “That was huge.” Miraculously, the newly formed MSCO succeeded on both fronts. The station’s first move to a temporary holding location came in 2005, followed two years later by a second move in 2007 to

Coronation Park on Judson Street, where a foundation was poured for its permanent relocation and where work has since been undertaken to restore Mimico Station’s exterior. “It’s been a labour of love,” said Klaus Dunker, who, along with wife Marjut Dunker and Bill Moffet, make up the volunteer team of architects working with MSCO on Mimico Station’s restoration. “We still have a lot of work to do – the interior is not finished. But we’re happy about all the work done, much of which was the work of volunteers.” Those improvements have

included: the rebuilding of the addition, ticket booth and a new roof in 2008; new stucco, wainscoting, shingling and priming in 2009; and new doors, windows, exterior trim and a water connection in 2010, among other improvements. In addition to its volunteer architects, MSCO’s core members responsible for much of that restoration – and who will be honoured by the ACO Nov. 13 – include: McHale, Richard McQuade, Sandy Eathorne, Roswita Busskamp, Angela Barnes, Debra Selkirk and the late Mark Selkirk. Other supportive partners, such as the Rotary Club of Etobicoke and Girl Guides of Canada, also contrib-

uted. While Mimico Station was, until recently, used by a local developer as a sales pavilion, the ultimate goal is to reopen it to the public as a community and educational resource. The hope, McHale said, is that Mimico Station will one day house a local history museum covering Mimico, New Toronto and Long Branch; an operators’ bay to showcase railway operations as an important part of local history; a multi-purpose community room for special events and meetings; and an archive to store materials related to local history. For Busskamp, being involved in the effort to restore Mimico Station so that it can stand as a tribute to Canada’s railroading past has been a rewarding experience. “I’m not particularly a railway buff as such, but I recognize the importance for Canada of the railway,” she said. “Without the railway, Canada would not exist – it brought the east and west together and it made it a whole country, so it is very important.” Fellow MSCO member Sandy Eathorne agreed, noting her grandfather came to Toronto in 1911 from England to work on the Grand Trunk Railway – giving her participation in the Mimico Station project a direct connection and even deeper meaning because of it. “I think that, unfortunately, it’s often not recognized how important heritage is to a sense of community. It gives people roots, so that it feels like a safer, more grounded community – and I think that’s a huge piece of why this is so important,” she said. “That connection to the past, and giving people that sense that this is a safe, long-term community – I don’t think planners necessarily see that long-term, historic piece of how important that is to a community like ours.” The MSCO is welcoming new members. Anyone interested in getting involved is urged to go to www.mimicostation.ca or email info@mimico station.ca for more information.

Image of dead boy washed ashore prompted councillor to act >>>from page 1 plight of the millions of refugees trying to escape civil war in the region. “Really, when I saw that picture of that little boy on the beach, my mind went straight to my son – I saw my son on that beach,” the father of two said in an interview with The Guardian. “Since that night, I feel like I’m holding my kids even tighter. Once you become a parent and you see that image, it changes everything. Kids should not have to endure that. Parents should not have to be in that scenario where there’s no other option but to jump into the ocean. The desperation in that is incredible.” And so, with 14-month-old son Julien and three-and-ahalf-year-old daughter Makayla top of mind, Di Ciano and his wife Kristen pledged to do something to help. That pledge came to fruition last week, when Di Ciano announced his family will be personally donating $30,000 to sponsor a Syrian refugee family through

Councillor Justin Di Ciano (Ward 5, Etobicoke-Lakeshore) and his family, wife Kristen, daughter Makayla and son Julien, recently pledged $30,000 to sponsor a Syrian refugee family through the Archdiocese of Toronto's Project Hope campaign.

the Archdiocese of Toronto’s Project Hope – a 100-day campaign aimed at raising $3 million to help bring 100 refugee families to settle within the Greater Toronto Area as soon as possible. “I mean, how can we not do everything we can to make this horrible situation better? That wasn’t the only picture, that wasn’t the only child – it’s

happening over and over. It’s happening every day,” Di Ciano said of his family’s “very quick, very easy” decision to sponsor a family. “We just thought, let’s lead through example and see what happens.” THE ETOBICOKE CHALLENGE To those ends, the Di Cianos also launched The Etobicoke

Challenge – asking their fellow Etobians to follow in their footsteps with their own pledges of support. The original objective of the challenge was to raise $250,000 toward Project Hope’s $3-million goal, but thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, that target was doubled within 24 hours of the Challenge’s launch last week. With that, Di Ciano has now doubled the Etobicoke Challenge’s fundraising goal to $500,000 – an impressive aim that has not gone unnoticed by the Archdiocese. “We are so grateful to Councillor Di Ciano for stepping forward and leading by example,” said Neil MacCarthy, director of communications for the Archdiocese of Toronto. “He’s not only asked people to get engaged in this campaign, but he’s made a commitment to sponsor a family himself. We need that kind of leadership from prominent individuals in the community.” Project Hope isn’t the Toronto Catholic community’s first foray into refugee resettle-

ment – the Archdiocese has a long tradition of helping refugee families rebuild their lives here in Toronto, MacCarthy said. In fact, since 2009 alone, the Archdiocese has initiated the resettlement of 2,519 refugees through its Office for Refugees (ORAT). In early October, a volunteer team from the Archdiocese traveled to a refugee camp in Jordan, where they identified more than 100 Syrian, Iraqi and African families for resettlement in the GTA. Some of those families, MacCarthy said, are expected to arrive in Toronto as early as the new year – which is why Project Hope’s second focus, beyond fundraising, is to establish 100 volunteer committees of six to 10 people who are prepared to make a one-year commitment to supporting those families. “It’s a commitment of a year to say they will work throughout the process to ensure that they’re an advocate and a friendly hand to help this family settle,” MacCarthy said, noting that responsibilities will include

things like helping the families find affordable housing, assisting them with furnishings and aiding in their search for ESL and employment services, among other things. “As much as the fundraising helps get the families here, that volunteer commitment helps set them up for success when they do get here.” Di Ciano, for one, is looking forward to meeting with his sponsored family when they arrive, and doing everything in his power to ensure their transition to life in Toronto is as seamless as possible. “There’s going to be new members of our community and it’s going to be a wonderful experience welcoming them here and helping them settle,” he said. “There’s going to be laughing, there’s going to be crying, but it’s going to be worth it for us.” To donate, volunteer or learn more about Project Hope, visit www.archtoronto.org/ projecthope or contact the Archdiocese of Toronto’s Office for Refugees at 416-645-0827.

Westmount bridge over Humber River destroyed by Hurricane Hazel, while subsequent tidal wave kills 32 people

S

ince 1917, three pedestrian bridges have crossed the Humber River south of Lawrence Avenue West, each with its own different story to tell. The community of Westmount began to develop on the west side of the Humber River opposite the Town of Weston in the early 1900s. In 1913, Dr. Eli Franklin Irwin developed the land on the former Kingdom farm between Scarlett Road and the Humber River at today’s Kingdom Street. Soon the area’s residents were asking for a pedestrian bridge over the river at their location to make it easier for families to shop in Weston. In 1917, Irwin had a swing bridge built between Raymore Drive and the Weston Fairgrounds. It was constructed of cables strung across the river, with short boards attached at right angles to form a walkway. The sides were of simple wire fencing. The bridge was a delight for

denise harris history corner children who loved to get the bridge swinging wildly, but frightening for some adults who preferred to walk to Weston the long way around. In this photo of the bridge taken in the winter ca. 1917 to 1920. The man on the left is Anson McNish, a steelworker at the Moffat Stove factory in Weston. This bridge was pronounced unsafe and replaced in 1950 by a sturdier bridge with concrete abutments and wire cables supporting the platform, slightly north of the old bridge. This second bridge was washed out in Hurricane Hazel on Oct. 15, 1954 with disastrous results. During the storm, the massive flow of water down the Humber River caused the west abutment to tear loose while the east one held, as did the wire ropes supporting the platform.

The current then shifted the bridge until it stopped at a point where all of the debris coming down the river built up in one location. The water was diverted in a tidal wave across Raymore Drive where 14 homes were lifted off their foundations and floated away. Thirty-two people died. This bridge was not replaced until 1995. That part of Raymore Drive that had washed away was turned into a public park. A unique memorial to the hurricane’s victims was unveiled in 2002. Conceived by local residents, artist Mario Noviello brought their vision to life by transferring murals that display 1954 newspaper articles about the disaster onto huge pieces of concrete from the old bridge that still lay where they were dropped by the flood waters that fateful night.

CONSUMER FEATURE

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

Conversation needed on how to support veterans Award-winning history teacher Katy Whitfield recalls her late grandfather would share scant information about his time overseas as he served in the Second World War LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Northview Heights Secondary School teacher Katy Whitfield’s grandfather was a gunner in the Second World War. The late Sgt. Bernard J. McCabe was a member of the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, in training and in active service from 1942 to 1946 in France, England, Germany and Belgium. Upon his return home from battle, he married Whitfield’s grandmother, Dorothy McCabe (nee Evanoff), in 1946. Dorothy wrote him weekly letters during his service. The couple went on to have four children and were married for 61 years. “He never talked about it,” said Whitfield, a history teacher with a particular expertise in military history, of her grandfather’s war experience. “My grandfather was really reserved. The war really changed him. He had a tough exterior. He was hard to crack, but he was

very loving. He loved his eight grandchildren and his family dearly.” Whitfield said McCabe would only share tidbits of his time overseas with her. The lifelong Bloor West Village resident recalled showing her grandfather a history textbook not long after she began teaching the subject in an effort to engage him in conversation about his time in battle. Instead, he disputed the book’s interpretation of a map depicting a battle on the Atlantic Ocean, illustrating a convoy of ships travelling between Europe and Canada. Whitfield has a cousin who completed two tours of duty in Afghanistan, with whom her grandfather was more apt to divulge more details to, both having been soldiers. “The experience of soldiers in war can be both an individual and collective experience,” the high school teacher said. “The voice of veterans can be missed in conversation about

Katy Whitfield, who received a Governor General History Award for Excellence in Teaching in October, said her grandfather, a Second World War vet, would only share tidbits about his time overseas.

Remembrance Day.” She pointed to the Royal Canadian Legion of which her grandfather was a member and

its long-standing support of veterans and their families. Established in 1926, the Royal Canadian Legion is Canada’s

largest veteran support and community service organization. Whitfield, who received a Governor General History Award for Excellence in Teaching in October, said she has always had a keen interest in the past and would cut out articles from the newspaper as a kid to create her own historical archive. Primarily a history teacher, she is currently teaching a World Cultures class in which students are studying ways of commemorating Canada’s role in peace and conflict in the 20th and 21st century. “When soldiers came home from World War One, society was unsure how to support them,” Whitfield said. “One of the things (society realized is that it) needed to create these new hospitals to support soldiers with missing limbs.” The Queen Street Mental Health Centre (now merged into the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) established

a separate wing to support shell-shock victims while a veterans’ wing at Sunnybrook hospital was created to meet the ever-growing needs of those soldiers. Society’s needs changed after the Second World War. While some important infrastructure, like hospitals, was already in place, additional housing was needed for the influx of larger families. “After 1938, the economy grew rapidly,” Whitfield said. The more than one million Canadians returning to civilian life created a housing demand, not only for new homes, but for an upgrade of existing stock. Post Second World War homes were typically family bungalows, detached, more private dwellings, Whitfield said. As Remembrance Day approaches on Nov. 11, Whitfield stressed that, “the conversation about soldiers in battle is equally as important as how we support our veterans.”

Students pay tribute to those who came before

Remembrance Day ceremony honouring school’s veterans part of York Memorial’s ‘culture’ SIMONE ABRAHAMSOHN etg@insidetoronto.com For Ayushi Raval and Caroline Lu, both Grade 12 students at York Memorial Collegiate Institute, it is all just part of “Memo culture”. Both students will be volunteering for the school’s Remembrance Day ceremony to assist returning former students and veterans, now elderly men who might experience challenges climbing the front steps to the school. Located at Keele Street and Eglinton Avenue West beside the York Civic Centre, the school was built in 1929 in memory of youth killed in the First World War and is declared as a heritage site by the City of Toronto. It features 11 steps symbolizing the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (when peace was declared) during the First World War. Raval, who also volunteered last year, said she and her fellow students want to show veterans that their presence is important to them. “By helping them to enter the building they spent time in as young men, we hope we’re showing them

they are very important to us, and that their attendance at the ceremony is a priority.” “We might have different clothing now than when they were going to school here, but whether it’s a varsity jacket worn by a vet, or a hoodie worn by students today, the school name and spirit are still the same. So, we want to show them that we all can be a part of ‘Memo culture’.

Same meaning, different jackets,” Raval said. The school interior features characteristics such as murals, dedication plaques and stained-glass windows, which were designed and built in memory of those who served in the war. The coloured mural surrounding the auditorium entrance was painted by John Hall and dedicated on Feb. 27, 1949 as a Second World War memorial. York Memorial will hold a school-only ceremony as well as a public service, which is only one of four sanctioned Remembrance Day ceremonies by the city. “It is always heartwarming to see and meet the families of former students and vets, and the different generations who return for the ceremonies,” said Principal Suzana Greenaway, who will read aloud the names of the 45 students inscribed in the Roll of Honour, during the ceremony. “What’s often remarkable to visitors is that the school itself hasn’t changed much over the years, and it looks as they remembered it, but it’s only the clothing and styles of the students that remind one that time hasn’t stood still.”

Etobicoke’s ‘best-kept secret’ marks 80th year Keeping women’s minds active was behind the formation of the Kingsway Women’s Club CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke’s “best-kept secret” is turning 80. The Kingsway Women’s Club – which was founded in 1935 with the motto “Cultural Advancement and Neighbourliness” – celebrates its 80th anniversary Friday, Nov. 13 at Markland Wood Golf Club, 245 Markland Dr. All are invited to drop by for the free festivities. While the celebrations kick off at 2:30 p.m. with cake and remarks from local dignitaries, those interested in checking out the club’s November tea are welcome to arrive at 1:30 p.m. for a pre-celebration education presentation by special guest speaker Barb McLellan. “We always say we’re the best-kept secret in Etobicoke,” said Darlene Dubbin, a pastpresident and 10-year member of Kingsway Women’s Club.

Staff file photo/IAN KELSO

The Kingsway Women's Club is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. Past presidents in this photo from 2013 include, left to right, Margaret Rutledge, Carol Spratt and Darlene Dubbin.

“We work hard to get really good speakers and entertainers for all of our events, and we welcome everyone to come out and see what we’re all about.” Margaret Rutledge, daugh-

ter of Kingsway Women’s Club’s founding president Mrs. F.H. Adamson, will also be on hand at the Nov. 13 anniversary celebration to say a few words about the history of the club – which she

said her mother first helped establish as a means of staving off the isolation felt by housewives in the then-fastgrowing, albeit still remote, central Etobicoke community of Kingsway Park. “When our family moved out here from High Park in 1930, it was woods and fields and beautiful – but it sure was country...,” Rutledge recalled in a 2013 interview with The Guardian. “My mother realized shortly after moving here that young women with active minds in the area needed stimulation to diminish their feelings of isolation. There needed to be a club for ladies – a regular get-together for women that needed to be interesting, have information sharing, world development and cultural and social communication.” Eighty years later, Kingsway Women’s Club has expanded upon its beginnings of just 10 women who met regularly at

each other’s homes to upward of 70 mostly retired members who meet once a month from October to April at Markland Wood Golf Club. The upcoming schedule is as follows: n Nov. 13 tea at 1:30 p.m., with special guest speaker Barb McLellan, who spent 30 years teaching in three provinces and will address education in Ontario. Her presentation will be followed by a special cake, tea and coffee in honour of Kingsway Women’s Club’s 80th anniversary at 2:30 p.m. n Dec. 11 holiday luncheon at noon featuring the “vocal harmonies, exciting rhythms and sparkling personalities” of Donna Green and the Satin Dolls. The cost is $45. n Jan. 22 tea at 1:30 p.m., with special guest speaker Lola Stoker, owner of Cruise Holidays/Luxury Travel Boutique, who will give a presentation on river cruises, as

well a travelogue of her recent Tulip Time and Danube river cruises. n Feb. 12 tea at 1:30 p.m., with special guest speaker Raheel Raza, who is one of nine “courageous” women’s rights activists profiled in the film, Honor Diaries. Raza will introduce the film and remain for a Q&A after the screening. n March 11 tea at 1:30 p.m., featuring a performance of Remember That Song musical by The Smile Theatre. n April 8 spring luncheon at noon, featuring Dr. Mike Daley, a singer, guitarist, songwriter and award-winning musicologist, who will tell the life story of Barbara Streisand. The cost is $45. The yearly membership fees for Kingsway Women’s Club is $60 and includes attendance at the four teas. For more information, go to www.kingswaywomensclub. wordpress.com

A poem by RCAF leading aircraftman Buddy Dick OPERATIONS “All men on duty”, the speakers blare. We look at each other in mock despair, Op’s on again, there’s work to do, It’ll be early morning before we’re through. The kites stand out on dispersal line, Black silhouettes. There, that one’s mine. Torches gleam; hoarse voices shout; Ground crew, like ants, scurry about. Above, Pte. Martin O’Keeffe (seated) with the Royal Army Medical Corps during the First World War. Above left, Pte. William Baker, a survivor of the Dieppe Raid, served with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. At left, Jack Cartledge with the Irish Regiment of Canada during the Second World War.

At last all’s done, they’re ready to go, The flare’s light up, row by row, The scream of motors fills the night “Listen to her purr, she sounds all right.” Buddy Dick was born in Toronto to Eastern European Jewish parents who had immigrated for a better life. When he enlisted, he was attending Vaughan Road Collegiate. He was stationed in England. He travelled across Europe after the worst of D-Day was over, serving as the driver for a captain who was gathering information for war crimes trials. After his return, he settled back in Toronto, married Irene List (their Jewish mothers arranged their first meeting) and went on to have five children. He started a successful insurance business and loved to travel. He was an exceptional amateur photographer, loved tennis and jazz and made outstanding dill pickles.

The first plane taxis to her appointed place. From here to the Ruhr marks out the race, With Death as the prize, for those whom Fate, Has chosen this night for her airborne mate.

Family members served in both world wars

A six hour pause, they’re back once more, From their contribution to a state of war. The crews step out, weary and grim, We’ve lost a few; you can’t always win.

BY PAULINE CARTLEDGE

We’ve done our job the best we can. What’s more to be said for any man. And though we gripe, we’ll be right there, When “all men to work” the speakers blare.

Soldier recalls friendships made, not horrors of war BY ELLEN COREY-SAMLAL

I Irving Banfield Corey (1892-1976)

rving Banfield Corey (1892-1976) was born in Kingscroft, Quebec, on a farm. In his teens, he took a business course and worked in a number of different places. By the time the First World War started, he was working for one of the banks that existed then. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915, and late that year, was sent overseas. In early 1918 he joined the Canadian Air Force, which had just been created, as an observer.

He kept a diary, which was mostly about his friends and the things they did when they had spare time. This is what he wrote on Nov. 11, 1918, the last day of the war or Armistice Day: “...deserted at dinner but the few present made enough noise to offset the lack of numbers.” He came back to Canada in 1919 and lived a very ordinary life. When he talked about the war to me, he didn’t dwell on the horrors, but on the friendships he made.

ll three soldiers pictured here lived in Toronto. All survived their military service. Pte. Martin O’Keeffe, my husband’s uncle, was originally from Dundee, Scotland. He lied about his age in order to enlist. Jack Cartledge was my husband’s father. He apparently trained with the RCE (Royal Canadian Engineers), but was transferred to the Irish Regiment when he got overseas. He served in Italy, Germany and ended up in Holland where he stayed with a nice family awaiting his return home after the war, probably reading issues of the Green Bonnet (a regimental paper). He arrived home Christmas Day 1946. Pte. William Baker is my father, originally from Northwich, England. At the Dieppe Raid, he was picked up in the freezing water and consequently suffered health problems for the rest of his life. We were given these pictures by our mothers and we cherish them. We also have medals, Martin’s dog tags and Jack’s kit bag.

Living history, as told by George Kerr, a veteran of the Second World War BY SUB-LIEUT. GEORGE KERR (BRITISH ROYAL NAVY – RETIRED)

A

fter an unsuccessful attack on the German Battleship Tirpitz in Norway’s Kaa Fjord by our Fleet Air Arm fighterbombers on April 3, 1944, all planes but two had returned to the safety of the Emperor (aircraft carrier) just before the weather suddenly changed for the worst and we started rolling and pitching, causing planes to break their moorings. There was so much confusion on deck that my good friend and fighter pilot John Brine of Cornwall, England, who was still flying protective cover for the ship, was told to remain airborne until some planes were safely lowered to the hanger deck. By the time the upper deck was clear, the seas had become mountainous and even down in the engine room, where there was normally less motion, we were holding onto stanchions and railings to avoid falling. John was signalled to land but, just as his fighter came over the stern, the ship pitched, the bow went down, the stern came up, and his plane’s arrester hook

caught the end of the deck instead of the arrestor wire. The hook was wrenched from its socket and the plane flipped over upside down. John sustained a fractured skull and died the next day. We buried him at sea, and that in itself was a nightmare since it was almost impossible to stand, with the ship rolling and pitching. We continued to roll a steady 30 degrees, which is very dangerous, and twice we did 45 degrees, which is usually fatal. Eating and sleeping were practically impossible, crockery was smashed. Planes were wrecked, so we turned into the wind to alleviate our problem. The waves had to be 50-feet high. Our nightmare continued for six more days before the seas and winds abated and we could sail back to our base at Scapa Flow in Northern Scotland. I learned later that we had been given up for lost, and for some years after the war, I had nightmares about being on a ship that turned upside down, but the only one to do that was the Battleship Tirpitz a few months later.

A wartime romance blooms

I

t was 1944 and while bombs were dropping during the Second World War, a springtime romance was blooming in London, England. It was between Thomas, a brave young 19-yearold Canadian soldier of the North Shore Regiment from Campbellton, New Brunswick, ready to be shipped out to fight on the Normandy beaches in June, and Freda, a strong-willed young au pair girl (a domestic assistant from a foreign country working for, and living as part of, a host family) from Leipzig, Germany, stranded in England and interned for three years on the Isle of Anglesey Wales, by the act of formal Declaration of War between Great Britain and Germany in September 1939. They saw each other for a few short months before being separated by battle. The regiment landed on Juno Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Freda died 15 years ago in 2000, still in London, England. Thomas still remains a mystery. Their loving son, born New Year’s Eve 1944, now resides in Toronto. – name withheld by request

Freda, an au pair girl from Germany, met Canadian solider Thomas while both were in England. The couple embarked on a whirlwind romance. Thomas was eventually shipped out and Freda was left pregnant. The pair never reunited and Thomas never learned he had a son.

Treasured postcard written by mystery soldier, H. Simon BY CHRISTINE A. LYNETT

I

have become the family archivist through a series of circumstances and, I must admit, a certain inclination on my own part. It is often a very emotional experience that captures one’s heart and will not let go easily; however, it is also a poignant and touching experience that enlightens and brings joy along with the tears. Many years ago, following the death of my paternal grandmother, my family was going through her home. My father, sister and brothers, aunt and cousins were all sifting through the remnants of hers and my grandfather’s life, hoping to discover a treasure before someone else. What captured my attention was a box of old photographs. Following a few cursory glances from the others, I was left alone with the box as they continued on their search for things more valuable. And I indeed was left with a treasure. Within the box was this old photo of a soldier. I had seen a lot of those kinds of photos before as my father was a Second World

War veteran. But this was different; the uniform was simpler than my dad’s and the young man was not wearing or holding a hat in his picture, the way my dad always had. I turned it over and saw that it was actually a postcard with writing on it. It reads: Dear Friend Just thought I’d send you this post to show you how I feel. I hope everybody down there in the old burg called Galt is feeling well. I certainly am for this is the life for me. How is all the rest down there, dad, mother, and dear old Mary, and little Dutch Charlie. Jim and John, tell Charlie to bring in the cows at 5 o’clock. Must close now Yours Truly H. Simon 16 Battery Queens Park London and soon Say, Mary are you breaking any more windows now? At the top of the postcard in red ink, in contrast to the black of the original, was written: Died of pneumonia in France 1917.

This postcard (at top is the back, above is the front) was found in the belongings of Christine A. Lynett’s grandmother’s possessions following her death in 1972.

I have kept this postcard all of these years. My grandmother died in 1972, my grandfather a few months later. I still, to this day, do not know who H. Simon was or what his relationship was to my grandmother. I do know that my grandfather had a sister named Mary and brothers named Jim and John. His reference to Galt (now Cambridge, Ontario) is where they all lived. Regardless of this, I am honoured to have shared the life of this brave Canadian soldier, H. Simon.

OutGROW OutPLAY, Canada’s leading children’s consignment sale, is fast approaching in Mississauga and consignors and volunteers are now welcome to register. On November 21 and 22, thousands of shoppers will stop by the International Centre to save up to 90 per cent of the retail value on new and gently used children’s, women’s and Christmas items. Not only can parents save hundreds of dollars on brand name items at the event, they can also make money with the baby items, toys and clothing creating clutter in their homes. Sitting at a booth all day, negotiating prices with bargain-hunting shoppers at a mom-tomom sale can be a hassle. With OutGROW OutPLAY, it’s simple. Parents can register for a consignor account on the website, search the house for anything the little ones have grown out of, choose the prices and print off pre-made tags, drop everything off and wait for the cheque to arrive. Consignors earn 65 to 80 per cent of the selling price. Busy parents are also welcome to participate by having other moms tag products and still earn 40 to 55 per cent of the profit. Items for sale must be new or gently used and parents can track the sale of their goods online. OutPLAY OutGROW runs on volunteers. Because the helpers are so important, they get an increase in profit on any items they’re selling and first dibs at the pre-sale a day early, along with

TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Carolyn Wright never witnessed parents armed with MLS listings asking if the homes for sale were in the school’s catchment area until she became Norseman Junior Middle School’s principal. The phenomenon reflects the sought-after and evergrowing nature of the community in The Queensway and Islington Avenue area – and mirrors projections the school’s student enrolment will only continue to rise. It is said to be the school with the largest catchment area in the entire Toronto District School Board. The school currently has seven portables. Relief came late last month after the Ministry of Education announced $6 million in funding to Norseman to build a 14-room addition. The school was built in 1952. “This news is long-awaited in our school community. It’s amazing for us,” Wright said. “It will allow all students to be in the school building instead of in portables. “It will allow us more (dedicated) specialty classrooms, like music, art and French. Those teachers can then really create a class specific to those subject areas rather than moving class to class, which they do now.” Last year, a small addition of

Developers seeking zoning and bylaw changes, some already approved by the city, is transforming the former decades-old industrial areas into new pockets of residential neighbourhoods. Islington Junior Middle School is the area’s only other kindergarten to Grade 8 elementary school to the north. “In the last few years, we saw the size of the school growing and growing. With full-day kindergarten coming in, we saw even more kids coming to our school,” Ferlito-Ryan said. “The population is growing and growing. We thought, ‘we have to do something.’”

Did You Know?...

On average, people with hearing loss wait aalmost lmost 10 years befor before e they do something about it?

That’s missing 10 years worth of memories! *www.phonak.com/com/b2c/en/hearing/understanding_hearingloss/facts_and_figures.html *www .phonak.com/com/b2c/en/hearing/understanding_hearingloss/facts_and_figures.html

Hearing is making memories. Don’t wait! Take the first step and look for the symptoms. Do you have to turn up the volume on the TV or radio? Do you find it difficult to hear the doorbell or the telephone ring? When you are in a group or in a crowded restaurant, is it difficult for you to follow the conversation? If you answered “YES” to one of these questions above, call us today and learn more about our personalized hearing health care services.
