Instead, he saw a pair of OPP officers who informed him that his father Neil and sister Eleesha were killed in a crash and that his mother was seriously hurt. “I was told at the door, and that’s when my life just fell apart,” Wijeratne said. “You don’t process that. I went into almost a robotic mode and I started listening to what the police officers were saying and I just did what they said.” The officers took Wijeratne to Sunnybrook hospital where his mom Antonette was being treated. “I didn’t even want to go into emergency to see my mom because I knew what I would have to tell her, and when I went in, I couldn’t tell her,” Wijeratne, 23, said in an interview. “Finally the doctors said ‘We’ll tell her if you’re present’ and

Canada has one of the highest rates of impaired driving in the world,” Wijeratne said. “And it’s the leading cause of criminal death in this country, and we need to act.” Wijeratne and his mom joined other MADD Toronto volunteers at police headquarters Monday for the launch of the organization’s annual Red Ribbon campaign to promote sober driving during the holiday season. “My family didn’t consider the fact that there could’ve been an impaired driver on the road that night,” Wijeratne said. “That was not something that struck us with fear. Now it strikes us with fear almost every night. Any time I go out with my friends, my mom is incredibly worried that I might get hit.” M A D D To r o n t o p re s i d e n t

Everilda Ratnakumar encouraged people to tie red ribbons to their vehicles or purses. “It’s just a way to show support. It’s a reminder to not drink and drive and it’s also a tribute to victims of impaired driving.” Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said nearly 1,100 people have been arrested for impaireddriving related offences in the city so far this year. “As a community we are getting better at solving the problem, not by being spectators, but being active participants,” he said. “If you see something, report it. The men and women of the Toronto Police Service are going to enforce.” This year marks the 29th anniversary of the Red Ribbon campaign. The ribbons are available from the MADD Toronto office and Allstate Canada offices now and at LCBO stores beginning Dec. 1. Car stolen, set on fire in lakeshore park Tamara Shephard tshephard@insidetoronto.com Condo residents near Humber Bay Park East directed Toronto police and Toronto firefighters to the scene of a raging fire in the park early Sunday. Some 29 firefighters and eight fire trucks responded to a condo resident’s initial call at 1:47 a.m. Nov. 6 reporting tall flames licking over the lakeside Etobicoke park’s trees. Multiple callers also phoned in to report the fire. Once on-scene, firefighters located an abandoned vehicle on fire, flames leaping to the side of an adjacent building near the park’s pond. In i t i a l l y, f i re f i g h t e r s

encountered some difficulty locating a fire hydrant to quell the flames, Toronto fire Capt. David Eckerman said. “Firefighters used two hand lines,” Eckerman said of the extinguishing approach. “We made a forced entry into a maintenance building checking for (fire) extension. We set up lighting. We were concerned about burning under the fascia of the maintenance building. We used thermal imaging cameras to ensure the fire was out.” Damage is estimated at approximately $75,000. Police allege the flameengulfed vehicle was stolen. Toronto police spokesperson Victor Kwong credited condo residents for assisting

Legal pot could boost economy I

t’s possible, even likely, that at some point next year, Ontarians will be able to search store shelves for ‘purple haze’, ‘blue dream’ and ‘kosher kush’ marijuana alongside their VQA merlots, sauvignon blancs and moscatos. Work is well underway to lay the foundation for marijuana legalization in this country, with legislation expected in the spring. Pot advocates have long argued legalization could give our economy a lift. A new report suggests that lift could surpass anyone’s wildest prophecy. A study produced by the Deloitte firm – titled Recreational Marijuana: Insights and Opportunities – suggests a legal marijuana industry in Canada could be worth an incredible $22.6 billion – more than the sales of wine, spirits and beer combined. Pot tourism, business taxes, licensing fees and paraphernalia could drive these astronomical projections even higher – high enough to stagger even the most jaded corporate CEO, or perhaps sway those still on the fence over whether or not legal pot is a good idea. “There hasn’t been anything like this – and granted it wasn’t legislated – but you think of the dot-com … flurry,” Mark Whitmore, vice-chair of Deloitte, told the Toronto Star. It’s no wonder that some ambitious medical pot entrepreneurs have tried to stake their claims by opening dispensaries long before a bill has been presented to MPs. Legal pot represents an extraordinary opportunity to jump-start our economy, which has been idling for far too long. Who would have thought that the jolt we needed would emanate from a leafy green herb bearing an unmistakable sweet scent and a sketchy past?

Toronto budget deliberations kick off with trash talk

o doubt about it, the big budget fight lies ahead at city

hall. But for now, the usually unsexy rate-supported budgets – water, solid waste, and the Toronto Parking Authority – are shaping up to be a pretty good opening act for what is sure to be a fraught debate over the operating and capital budgets for Toronto. The rate budgets were launched a week ago at a Friday morning meeting of Toronto’s budget committee. It was a good-news, bad-news affair. The good news is that the regular hefty increase to the water rate will be lower in 2017: five per cent, compared to the usual eight to nine per cent. Those increases had been paying for the upgrading of Toronto’s crumbling underground water infrastructure, and staff feel that Toronto is nearly square. So toilet flushing will

david nickle the city cost more, but not as much of an increase as last year. The cost of trash-tossing, however, is a different matter. Staff there are recommending bigger increases than in the past on the garbage bin fees, as well as a host of new ones. To be honest, the bin fee increases aren’t that big. The overall increase in the cost is 3.9 per cent, compared to 1.5 per cent each year over the past eight years. The biggest increase, on the extra-large bin as it happens, is $24.34 a year. The smallest increase is probably the most irksome: $12.73. When the program was introduced and for several years afterward, the city maintained no charge on the wee bins, as a way to reward homeowners who are good at recycling and keeping garbage to a minimum.

And that leads to the really irksome parts of the proposed budget; a host of additional fees, some of which will create more of a disincentive to divert. Now homeowners who want to try a smaller bin, and recycle more, will be hit with a $25 fee for the bin exchange. The yellowbag system of garbage collection for commercial districts will go up by $1.61 a bag, creating an incentive for businesses to drop the city service and go with a private hauler that won’t necessarily be as concerned about recycling and other diversion. And there’ll be an $8 per household flat fee for collecting oversized items. The increases are to pay, in part, for replacement of city-owned garbage trucks – trucks that may, in fact, prove unnecessary if council decides to contract out more or perhaps all of the city’s garbage collection, as it already has in the west end of the city.

Budget chief Gary Crawford indicated Friday that all this fee-charging business won’t make it to council should he have anything to do with it. “We need to keep the city affordable,” he said outside the meeting. Presumably that will mean keeping these double-digit increases in check. And doing so shouldn’t be that difficult, given that those digits are loonies and not percentiles. The next struggle - with Toronto’s mammoth operating and capital budgets - is going to be a much harder fight. But it is likely to be the same story: staff bringing forward unpalatable options to cut services and hike fees, budget chiefs dropping gauntlets - and councillors, finally, doing their best to sort it out.

Vaccinations are still available from doctors’ offices and Toronto Public Health clinics as well. All are offered free. When it comes to getting vaccinated, there’s no time like the present, said Dr. Vinita Dubey, associate medical officer of health with Toronto Public Health. “You want to get it before influenza starts peaking in the province. We’ve already seen cases of influenza in Toronto,” Dubey told Metroland Media. “Usually, the largest cases of influenza occur end of December, beginning of January, but it can change

every year. So because it takes two weeks for the vaccine to be effective, getting it in early November is a good time.” Kids four years and younger must be vaccinated at doctors’ offices or clinics. This year, kids ages two to 17 can opt for a nasal spray vaccine. The spray protects against four flu strains, two A and two B strains, while the shot protects against three – two A and one B. Influenza B strains can affect children more seriously. There are only two B strains, and it can be hard to predict which will circulate each season, so both are included in the kids’ spray vaccine, noted Dubey. A valid OHIP card is needed to get vaccinated at a pharmacy or doctors’ office. People without cards can get vaccinated at Toronto Public Health clinics. Last year was a milder flu season in Toronto due to the H1N1 strain that circulated, said Dubey, but this season Toronto could see H3N2, a more virulent strain, circu-

late. “You can’t rely on any previous flu vaccines in previous seasons to protect you for the coming season, so that’s why it’s important every year that you have to get the flu shot,”

she added. After becoming infected, people spread flu germs for days before developing symptoms. “The more people are vaccinated, the more you’re able

to prevent the spread of the infection, and the more of an impact you can make on preventing severe disease and deaths,” Dubey said. “The vaccine will cut your risk in half of getting the flu.”

And it is safe, she said, with redness or swelling of injection sites the most common side effects. “There is something that may be associated with influenza in general called Guillain-Barre syndrome, and that’s a neurological disorder and those who get vaccinated have a rate of about one-ina-million of getting this,” she explained. “But if you actually got the flu, your rate of getting this Guillain-Barre is actually higher.” An estimated five-to-10 per cent of adults, and 20-to-30 per cent of kids, get the flu each year in Ontario, and vaccination is the best protection. “There’s things that you can do to try to prevent the spread of influenza - like washing your hands, covering your cough, don’t go to work when you’re sick, those kinds of things,” said Dubey. “Beyond that, I’m not aware of any other prescription or natural remedies that could prevent the flu.”

Chance encounter got Woods into the Armoured Corps >>>from page 1 Wood, now 90, recalled. “Every time the mailman came to the door, mum would run and hide because she didn’t want to get a card saying one of her sons had been killed overseas.” Wood’s father, Douglas, “got the ball rolling” in 1940 with his enlistment, followed by older brothers Len and Frank in 1941 and 1942, respectively, sister Evelyn in 1943, and finally Wood himself, just three days after his 18th birthday in 1944. While Wood’s father and sister remained in Canada during the war - Douglas at the air force base in Dunnville and Evelyn at Rideau Military Hospital in Ottawa - his brother Len served his time in the Hebrides and down around Burma with the Air Force, and Frank fought overseas with the Armoured Corps in France, Italy and Germany. Wood, meanwhile, was set to join Frank with the Calgary Regiment in Italy shortly after completing his training at Camp Borden in 1944, but was pulled off his train to Montreal before he could embark. “It was quite a disappointment. I wanted to be over with Frank, who was going to claim me, but that was killed because they said they didn’t

want two brothers killed at the same time, which could have possibly happened, because Frank had it pretty rough over there in Italy.” Instead, Wood was sent back to Camp Borden, where, much to his chagrin, he recalls being assigned the menial tasks of white-washing rocks and scrubbing pots and

pans - not exactly what the eager young soldier had in mind when he enlisted. However, a chance encounter with General Frank Worthington (aka “the father of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps”) in the kitchens one day got Wood’s military career back on track.

“He looked at me and he says ‘Aren’t you trained in Armoured Corps? What the hell are you doing washing pots? You should be back in the Armoured Corps school,’” Wood laughed. While Wood never succeeded in joining his brothers overseas during the war (both returned safely and retired from the service shortly thereafter), he quickly came to find that the military life suited him, so he stayed on in the service. Following postings in Fort Churchill, Manitoba and Whitehorse, Yukon, among others, Wood was sent to fight in the Korean War in 1954, just months after marrying his first wife, Dorothea. “It was not very nice over there, that’s for sure. We were at what they called the sharp end, going through the Imjin River in North Korea,” Wood remembered. “Our tanks were supposed to wield off any attack from the Chinese...so we’d sit in the mountains and fire away.” Wood, who sustained a shoulder injury in Korea, received an Ambassador of Peace medal from the Korean government in honour of his service. But when asked if he wanted to participate in a revisit program for vets to return to Korea, he politely declined.

“I hear it’s pretty nice over there right now, but I didn’t want to go back,” he said, noting that he lost friends in the fighting. “I had enough the first time.” Still, Wood’s military career continued as his family grew - son Douglas was born in 1955, daughter Patricia in 1957 and son Donald in 1961. The children were just 12, 10 and six when their mother died. Wood retired from the Canadian Forces in 1974 after 30 years of service. Every Remembrance Day, he tries to get down to the Legion on Eighth Street with his wife Mildred to pay his last respects to fallen soldiers - especially those from his Royal Canadian Dragoons. “I feel it’s my duty to do it. It’s all we can do, but it means a lot. Every year around Nov. 11, I get feeling sad about it. You feel bad because you’re the only one still around. I have them dying off on me weekly these days,” he lamented. “To me, Remembrance Day is a day when you get thinking about your fallen comrades - and I got all kinds of them.” At 90, Wood is the sole surviving maple leaf from that family banner his mother hung proudly in their window what feels like, to him, a lifetime ago.

Metroland Media Toronto appoints Grace Peacock as Editor-in-Chief Grace Peacock has been named Editor-in-Chief, Metroland Media Toronto announced this week. Peacock will direct editorial strategy for the Toronto newsroom, which is responsible for the city’s nine community newspapers and its website, insidetoronto.com. “We’re fortunate to have a journalist of Grace’s calibre leading our Toronto news team,” Metroland Media vice-president Dana Robbins, Metroland Central region group publisher, said in a statement. “She’s a passionate, innovative journalist who cares about the communities we serve. I know our readers will be well served by her leadership.” Peacock had been a managing editor with Metroland Media Toronto for the past eight years. Her promotion comes three weeks after returning from maternity leave. Peacock has two boys at home; a four-yearold and a one-year-old. “Our strength is our connection to our communities, and that will continue,”

The series profiled people living with dementia, and provided an informative overview of the situation online and in print. A self-professed history and genealogy buff, Peacock also headed up the Toronto Time Capsule online - an ongoing collection of history articles and columns at insidetoronto. com/history exploring the city’s colourful past. Peacock worked as a reporter in Caledon, and in the Middle East in Amman, Jordan early in her journalism career. This week marks the start of yet another public awareness campaign by Toronto police for road safety. This time around, police are pointing out that out of the 37 pedestrians or cyclists struck and killed this year, the vast majority are seniors. Until Sunday, Nov. 13, police promise a greater presence in the vicinity of “pedestrian crossovers, crosswalks, intersection...and crossing areas frequented by seniors.” The police insist they’re not blaming any one group for the deaths of dozens of the city’s most vulnerable population, that every road user, whether behind a wheel or on foot, needs to be vigilant for their own safety. Not picking sides may seem like an improvement to past attitudes - see past comments from police slamming pedestrians for not wearing bright enough clothing or carrying distracting mobile devices

Anyone suggesting pedestrians should be seen as equals to motorists is overlooking one fact: speed, as has been shown by study after study, kills. As the 2012 Chief Coroner’s review of pedestrian deaths in Ontario found, speed – and not the colour of one’s clothes – was by far the main determinant in whether one survived being struck. On roads with a posted speed limit higher than 50 kilometres per hour, 67 per cent died; the number dropped to five per cent where posted speed limits were less than 50 km/h. That’s of course not to say

pedestrians are absolved of all personal responsibility. But to apportion an equal amount of blame on pedestrians without calling to attention the role speed plays in causing fatalities is an argument growing increasingly ludicrous given the realities of our city. Take a burgeoning population of elderly pedestrians, combine with roads geared to ease of access for automobiles and increasingly ill-equipped to deal with a growing percentage of non-motorists, and it’s a recipe for death. No amount of road safety campaigns no matter how well-intentioned will have any impact on the fatality rate without acknowledging the role speed pays. Woman, 95, struck and killed crossing Grenview A 95-year-old woman is dead after she was hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross the road in Etobicoke. The woman was struck Sunday, Nov. 6 just before noon at Grenview Boulevard North and Bloor Street West.

The woman was attempting to cross southbound on Grenview, approaching Bloor. She was hit by a 2014 Ram truck driven by a 28-yearold man who attempted to make a right turn. The driver remained on the scene.

The Steak Queen Restaurant in Etobicoke heavily damaged in fire An Etobicoke restaurant was heavily damaged after a fire ripped through the building early Tuesday. Fire crews were called to Steak Queen at 345 Rexdale Blvd. at 1:22 a.m. “Upon arrival flames were visible from the roof,” Toronto Fire Services Capt. David Eckerman said. “We laddered the building. We were able to get the fire knocked down at 2:04 a.m., and we had to open up the roof looking for (fire) extension.” ExtEnsivE damagE Eckerman said the fire was predominately around a kitchen vent. “The OFM (Office of the Fire Marshal) was notified due to the high dollar loss,” he said. I began to walk in my purpose.” That purpose was founding Think 2wice, a non-profit organization working with at-risk and high-risk youth. Now, she takes the program and her message to youth in prison. Brown’s son, Treston, 23, said lack of a positive male role model had a profound impact on his life. He went to jail at 18.

Last year, 20 young men applied to college, 11 others to university. “Every single aspect of self-hatred we had to exorcise from our bodies,” Knight said of the program. “A lot of young men have heard they’re worthless by people close to them... We use the language of love, caring and compassion. “We need to make the high school experience relevant, redeeming and healing.”

Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame inducts five heavy hitters LAURA DASILVA etg@insidetoronto.com Former Toronto Blue Jay Kelly Gruber believes there’s only one thing we can control – our effort. “We’re not in control of errors, base hits, wins or losses,” he said, following his induction into the 2016 Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame. “We’re in control of our effort 100 per cent.” Gruber, Hockey Hall of Famer Adam Oates, Canada’s oldest golf pro Gord de Laat, Toronto Marlboros president Jim Nicoletti and former owner of the St. Mike’s Buzzers Mike McCarron were chosen as this year’s inductees for their outstanding efforts in sports. Their achievements were honoured at the hall’s 23rd annual gala dinner and fundraiser at the Old Mill Wednesday, Nov. 2. After watching a video tribute that included highlights from his historic 1992 World Series winning game, Gruber took the stage and said he was “blown away” by the honour. The esteemed third baseman, known for his fearless play and flowing blond hair, said he didn’t listen when he was young and thanked his coaches for their rearing and discipline. “I thought I knew it all,” he said. “I was blessed with tremendous athletic ability, but I had to learn to be a baseball player.” When asked what he thinks about being compared to current long-haired Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson, he quipped, “I have a better hairdo. I’ll take my mullet over whatever that

cial ruin and nurtured numerous buzz-worthy hockey players, called Etobicoke “the greatest place in the world to live” during his speech. “I’ve been referring to this place as ‘Pleasantville’ for years,” he said. “They’re going to put me in a box in Etobicoke.” Another major force in minor hockey, Nicoletti, said he never imagined he would become a part of Etobicoke’s history. The Marlboros’ head honcho said teaching and development have always been at the forefront of the organization. “Winning – and we’ve won a lot – has simply become merely the byproduct of excellent preparation and commitment,” he said. He got emotional when reflecting on the countless hours his four kids have contributed to the club’s legacy. “Dad could never have managed to accomplish all these responsibilities without your support,” he said. He noted he danced with his wife Patti in the same Old Mill banquet room during his high school prom, and applauded her endless support with a lump in his throat. Retired NHL player Oates said sports have always been his life and he thanked people like McCarron and Nicoletti for their contributions to youth hockey in Etobicoke. “You’re the ones who gave me, and every kid, a chance to make it,” he said. He can now add another hall to his resume. The Weston native, who tallied 1,079 assists, 341 goals in 1,337 National Hockey League games, was inducted into

the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012. Though he humbly accepted his induction with a smile and a wave, golf pro Gord de Laat’s impact was in full swing during the gala. All of his fellow inductees admitted they could learn a thing or two from the 99-year-old, who started caddying at Lambton Golf and Country Club and went on to compete in the Canadian Open 10 times. The near centenarian served as head pro at Weston Golf and Country Club for 30 years, where he hosted friends like late golf legend Arnold Palmer and comedian Bob Hope. He continues to be a fixture at the Mayfield Golf Course in Caledon, the club he opened in 1978. In addition to honouring seasoned professionals like de Laat, the hall awards scholarships to up-and-coming students and Special Olympic athletes. Peter Flagler and Lindsey Chambers were this year’s recipients of the Special Olympic scholarships. A new award, the Jerry Howarth Sports Broadcasting scholarship, was given to the voice of the Humber Hawks Jake Thompson. “I realize more and more what Jerry’s name means,” Thompson said about the longtime radio voice of the Toronto Blue Jays. Cassandra Nofuente, Daniele Clemente, Blake Kauer, Heide Beck and Eugenio Garro are the Humber College Award winners and Christina Piccinin and Rachel Santini are this year’s recipients of the high school scholarships.
