Philanthropists sell Mercedes to help Best Buddies, WaterStone An Etobicoke couple fetched more than $200,000 for their rare Mercedes sports car and donated most of it to help children with intellectual disabilities gain new experiences. Kim and Terr y Duffy donated $216,000 from the sale of their 2008 silver Mercedes SLR McLaren: twothirds to Best Buddies Canada and one-third to WaterStone Foundation Inc. Only 300 of the rare sports car were produced in 2008-09. “The satisfaction felt in helping a person in need will last a lifetime, while driving a sports car is a fleeting moment of self-indulgence,” Terry said in a statement. The Duffys have supported Best Buddies for a number of years. “In reflection, the SLR McLaren is a beautiful, exciting automobile in every way, but nothing compares to how powerful the act of giving to those in need can be,” Terry added. Best Buddies Canada is a national charity that operates a friendship program.

The driver of a TTC bus involved in a Rexdale crash Sunday that left a man dead and nine people injured is “obviously shaken” and “obviously saddened” by what happened, the head of his union says. Bob Kinnear, president of the Amalgamated Transit Unit Local 113, said the driver, three hours into his shift as the bus entered the intersection of Westhumber Boulevard and K ipling Avenue, was thrown from his seat in the collision with a Nissan Altima at about 6 a.m. He was restrained by his seat belt but on the floor and his foot was caught on the accelerator, said Kinnear, who visited the man in hospital Sunday. He added the driver’s physical injuries were not serious – cuts and bruises – but the TTC union recognizes his experience was traumatic and will ensure both he and passengers on the bus get the supports they need. The transit union has con-

fidence a police investigation will determine the truth about what happened in the intersection Kinnear said. Const. Clint Stibbe of Toronto Police Traffic Services said after the collision the bus continued on into a nearby plaza. “After the collision, the bus exited the intersection through the northeast corner, struck a light standard and a fire hydrant, went through a parking lot, and ended up in the CIBC banking centre,” he said, noting the bus partially entered the bank building, which was closed. The 24-year-old male passenger in the back seat of the Nissan died of his injuries, while the two other males in the car were rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, Stibbe said. The conditions of both men has since been upgraded, and both are now serious, but stable condition. The driver of the bus and its six passengers, meanwhile, were all transported to hospital with only minor injuries. The collision, Stibbe added, is still under investigation. No charges have yet been laid. – with files Cynthia Reason from Mike Adler

Locally, the Best Buddies program operates at Michael Power-St. Joseph High School, Fa t h e r Jo h n Re d m o n d Catholic Secondary School, Central Etobicoke Collegiate,

Richview Collegiate and Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School. Best Buddies gives people with intellectual and developmental disabilities the chance to have experiences most people take for granted – going out for coffee or to see a movie, or simply enjoying the company of a friend. Steven Pinnock, Best Buddies Canada executive

director, said in a statement the Duffys’ donation will help start the program in more schools across Canada. “This kind of donation by the Duffys will help children with intellectual disabilities experience things they might not have had the chance to.”

Citizens can find strength in numbers

W

e’ve said it before, that if you’re unsatisfied with something or desire change in this city, you need to speak up about it. But better than that, the best way to effect change is to do it with a united front. There’s strength in numbers, but also strength in shared experiences and resources. This week we’ve seen great examples of that in stories we’ve covered. In Etobicoke, Glen Agar residents concerned about the intensification of development in their neighbourhood banded together and formed a new ratepayer’s association. “We must have a say in the decisions that affect our neighbourhood,” reads their mandate. “No politician or city staffer has a more vested interest in how our community is growing and shaping than each and every one of us.” On Monday evening, a group called WSIC (Why Should I Care?) based out of North York held a forum on transit and urban planning. Motivated by the desire to engage and inform, our view the group hosts public meetings like this to spur discussion and citizens why municipal Effect change show affairs matter to them. through shared In Parkdale, the Ossington BIA – the city’s newest BIA – recently experiences became official, in choosing its first board members. The BIA formed after business owners saw a need to manage the transformation of the Ossington strip and mitigate relations with residents and area developers. And in another show of productive collaboration, transit advocacy groups and the airport worker’s union rallied together in order to push for affordable fares on the upcoming Union-Pearson air rail link. In forming the Our Union Pearson Coalition, the group offers a collective point of view, backed by the voices and experience of thousands. Where groups can learn from each other, share best practices and experiences is where issues will be most effectively resolved. Discover who shares that common interest or has an investment in your area and bring everyone to the table to make the most impact. BIAs can assist resident associations. Issue-related advocacy groups may find a wealth of resources in grassroots community groups. Politicians, school board trustees, police liaison committees – there’s no shortage of people to turn to, when you’re looking to strengthen your cause. Mayor-elect Tory must speak firmly to feds about Toronto’s transit needs

D

uring the election campaign, John Tory repeatedly said that he would “shame” other levels of government into paying for big-ticket items beyond the scope of the property tax base. Specifically, things like housing and transit. Just a few weeks following the election, Mayor-elect Tory seems to be waffling. When asked Monday whether he would turn transit into an election issue in the looming federal election, Tory chuckled. After having finished a municipal election, he joked, “the last thought I have is getting involved in another one.” It’s a disappointing note in what had been a hopeful tune: namely, that Tory, with his Rolodex full of contacts and relationships, might be the city’s most effective advocate when dealing with other levels of government.

david nickle the city Surely the best time to bring that advocacy to a government is as it heads into an election and therefore has the most at stake. That Tory seems unwilling to do so is puzzling. A benign explanation might be that he simply doesn’t wish to be seen following the Toronto Transit Commission’s union leadership, who made the call earlier Monday as it released a report indicating the poverty of our transit system and the need for federal and provincial investment. But the theory advanced by failed candidate Doug Ford – that Tory’s relationships are as much a constraint as they are an advantage – is another explanation. Tory’s candidacy was endorsed by sitting

politicians of both Liberal and Conservative persuasion. Taking a firm stance in the context of an election involving the careers of those politicians, after they’d been so kind ... well, it’s just bad manners. Hopefully Tory’s reticence to bring up awkward truths with old friends, particularly in concert with natural opponents like the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113, is a temporary thing. Because it is going to take some hard talk, either publicly or privately, to engage the current federal government on municipal issues to any degree. Left to his own devices, Stephen Harper is more likely to fight the coming election on tax policy and the country’s new military adventure against ISIS. Municipal matters are outside of the federal government’s wheelhouse as a

rule, and they’ll stay that way unless municipalities make some noise. That noise need not be confrontational. Former mayor David Miller negotiated significant improvements in financing and governance with both former Premier Dalton McGuinty and former Prime Minister Paul Martin. Miller was polite about it, but by no means silent. Tory needs to find his own voice, speaking firmly about Toronto’s unmet needs, and assigning responsibility for the fulfillment of those needs correctly, with the governments who have the greatest capacity to raise and disperse funds. He needs to make them aware of the shame inherent in failure to do so. David Nickle is The Guardian’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Reach him on Twitter: @DavidNickle

Enjoy a Delmanor retirement in the heart of the Kingsway There’s nothing quite like the majesty of living in traditional Etobicoke. For centuries Etobicoke has offered its residents a heritage rich in the natural surroundings of waterways, woodlands and parks. That’s why Tridel knew they had to deliver more at Dundas and Prince Edward. Sale of school property fueled resident concern over intensification and ultimate impact on area’s aging infrastructure >>>from page 1 60 years, and to their knowledge there’s never been a ratepayers’ association in the Glen Agar neighbourhood, so it’s positive that the community has come together for this,” French said, noting that the association’s founding meeting on Oct. 20 drew close to 100 local residents. “I think neighbourhoods need to advocate for themselves...Things happen quickly, so the sooner this community mobilizes itself and defines what it’s looking for, the better things will be for them down the road.” The main impetus for GARA’s formation was the TDSB’s sale of the former Kipling Grove School – which currently houses Phoenix Montessori School and Kiddie Village Daycare Centre and the 200 children who attend them – to a local developer this past summer, said long-

time Glen Agar Drive resident Ken Copeman, who was voted GARA’s interim president at the association’s founding meeting. Both the 59-year-old school building and its six-acre site were declared surplus to the TDSB’s needs back in June 2013, and put up for sale by the Toronto Lands Corporation (TLC) shortly thereafter – first to other school boards and public sector organizations, then on the open market. After a community meeting held by the TDSB in October 2013, Copeman said residents left with the impression that the school site would likely be sold to the Catholic school board, which had expressed an interest in purchasing it. But when that sale fell through and the school was instead sold to Minto Group Inc. – a family-owned integrated real estate develop-

ment, construction and management company with operations in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and Florida – in August, residents began growing concerned about the intensification any new development would bring to their quiet community, Copeman said. “The big reason for us doing this is, once you’re established as a homeowners’ association, anything that happens in the area, (the city has to) notify the association,” he said. “For us right now, the big issue is the sale of the old Kipling Grove School. It’s upset a lot of people. Any time they sell any of these schools, it’s a sore spot, but this one especially.” Not only would the redevelopment of the school site displace the Montessori school and day care currently renting the space, as well as local sports organizations

who use the former school’s playing fields, residents are also concerned that any new development would impact traffic and put extra strain on already-aging infrastructure that saw many of the community’s homes flooded during last July’s torrential downpours, Copeman explained. “That area was one of the hardest hit, especially

Beaverbrook Avenue,” he said of the flooding. “So we already know that we can’t have any more infill development in here without major upgrades to the sewer and water systems... “And the city just repaved Glen Agar last year – just paved it, fixed all the drainage, fixed all the ditches, fixed everything. They just did that....

This whole thing, there’s so many ifs, ands or buts about what would happen.” French said that, so far, Minto has been receptive even offering up Kipling Grove’s gymnasium for GARA’s first two meetings.

RAT PROBLEM DOWNTOWN? Rats may be on the move around Union Station. A pest control company issued a press release this week stating, “the demolition and construction of several underground structures at Union Station has displaced a large rat colony, forcing its migration to new areas of the downtown.” However TTC and Metrolinx spokespeople told the media that they have not received reports of increased activity of rats. Actors in Theatre Etobicoke's Bedside Manners are, from left, Randy Bridge, Nicole Bailey, Nadia Moschella and Sammy Allouba.

porter, room service guy and repairman, and so there is nothing he doesn’t see, or get in the middle of. To pull off this fast-paced farce, the cast must have impeccable comedic timing, great line delivery and follow precise stage direction. And they succeed. This talented cast doesn’t miss a beat, and even when a few unexpected glitches occur, their quickthinking and recovery make for some humourous additions to the show. The set in this show is creative and effective in portraying the upstairs rooms, the lobby area and front desk. Invisible walls, creative staging and lighting help to create the ambience and atmosphere of the show. Bridge as Ferris gives an outstanding performance as the “everything” man, and steals the scene many times.

His delivery and execution of lines, his timing and mannerisms are impeccable, and he’s a funny and talented performer. The women in this show have such fun characters to portray and watch. Bailey as Sally and Moschella as Helen portrayed them fantastically. Their characters get to play in so many scenes and express different emotions. Everything from sexy to sarcastic, drunk to coy, it’s a lot of fun to watch and they have some incredibly funny lines as well. Allouba as Roger or Mr. Smith #1, and Brombacher as Geoff or Mr. Smith #2, will have you laughing out loud, and you even feel sorry for them in the funniest way. Cheaters never prosper, but their attempt makes for some comical theatre, and well-portrayed characters. If British farces are your type of humour, this is the show to see. Not only will you enjoy this show, but you will shake your head at its silliness and laugh with and at the characters throughout. Bedside Manners runs until Nov. 15, 8 p.m. and Nov. 16 at 2 p.m., at The Assembly Hall, 1 Col. Samuel Smith Park Dr. Tickets are $23 and can be purchased by calling 416-246-1889 or by visiting www.theatre-etobicoke. com

There are several farces out there, but Theatre Etobicoke managed to stage the most unique one yet, with more twists and turns than a rollercoaster, and one surprise after another. Just when you think you know what direction the plot will take, something else adds to the mayhem and hilarity, which perfectly describes Bedside Manners, by Derek Benfield. This is a funny, silly, sometimes ridiculous story about two sets of lovers trying to get away for a weekend rendezvous that goes horribly wrong. Adding to the madness of it all is the location, a grubby, middleof-no-where hotel in the British countryside where the show is set. The show opens with two men, who both call themselves “Mr. Smith,” in their rooms preparing for their lady friends to arrive. They go through the usual, comical procedure; cologne, straightening the bed and general grooming. Mr. Smith #1, or Roger (Sammy Allouba), goes downstairs to tell Ferris (Randy Bridge) he’s expecting his friend Sally (Nicole Bailey) and would like a bottle of champagne. Shortly after, a similar scenario plays out when Mr. Smith #2, or Geoff (Mark Brombacher), goes downstairs to tell Ferris to expect his lady friend named Helen (Nadia Moschella). But for all the “alone time” these couples are supposed to have, one thing after another thwarts their efforts, including interruptions, surprise guests and plenty of mishaps. As in all farces, there’s one man in the middle of it all, Ferris. He’s the hotel’s “everything” man since there is no other staff. He acts as front desk man,

>>>from page 1 eral manager of Humberview Chevrolet, greeted the evening’s attendees last Thursday, noting that his dealership is ‘privileged’ to play a role in such an historic event as the TO2015 Games. “Our role as a premier partner and an official vehicle provider for these Games is a natural extension of Chevrolet’s long history of supporting Canadian athletes, from novice players experiencing sport for the first time, to Olympic athletes.” T h e Nov. 6 e v e n t a t Humberview saw its many attendees pose for photos alongside Pachi, mingle with other like-minded volunteers from the community, enjoy snacks and refreshments, and learn more about the upcoming Games. They learned that over the course of the Pan Am Games from July 10 to 26 and the Parapan Am Games from Aug. 7 to 15, Toronto will host 10,000 athletes and officials from 41 participating Pan American nations; and that those athletes will participate in 36 Pan Am and 15 Parapan Am sports in 16 municipalities in Ontario, drawing an estimated 250,000 tourists and spectators to Toronto and the surrounding area. To ensure it all runs smoothly, Lisa Bains, senior manager of TO2015 volunteer recruitment and support, said Games officials are hopeful to recruit more than 23,000 volunteers to help out over the course of the events. “Volunteers are the heart of these Games. They are definitely our backbone. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to host the Games,” she said, noting that volunteer roles will range from everything from ticket takers and ushers, to management and leadership roles, to working with the athletes and delegates, to translation and technology, to more specialized roles like officials and sports announcers. Staff and volunteers for the upcoming Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games get together with with Games’ mascot Pachi during a special Volunteer Community Meet Up.

Toronto lost the Olympic bids in 1996 and 2008, when she learned the city had won the bid to host the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, she jumped at the chance to be part of it. “I always wanted the summer Olympics to come to Toronto, but when I heard Toronto won the bid for these Games, I was just so excited and I thought this was my chance to get involved,” she said. “I just love welcoming visitors to our city and I think this will be a great way to showcase how hospitable Toronto is.” Myrna Brown, who volunteered at the Olympiad for the Physically Disabled (now called the Paralympic Games) when they were held here at Etobicoke’s Centennial Park in 1976, said she’s likewise excited to volunteer next summer. “When this opportunity came up, I thought let’s give it a try again,” said Brown, who regularly volunteers at The Assembly Hall. “I’m looking forward to the excitement of

the Games. I think the whole city is going to get wound up, so I’m looking forward to being part of it.” With volunteer recruitment still underway, TO2015 volunteer ambassador Elisa Abarca said she’s hopeful more people like Sorensen, Brown, and the other volunteers who attended the event, will sign up for the opportunity of a lifetime. “I say just do it. It’s a once in a lifetime chance. The last time we had an event of this size in the GTA was 60 years ago, so I urge people to take part,” she said, noting that she herself volunteered back in 2005 at the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships in Windsor. “It was an amazing experience, so I can only imagine this will be even greater,” she added. “It’s going to be pretty epic.” For more information about volunteering for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games and how to apply, go to www.toronto2015.org/volunteer

Alkins Real Estate has long history in the Etobicoke community Alkins Real Estate is deeply rooted in the Etobicoke community. Established in 1948 by Les Alkins, Les Alkins Real Estate’s first office was adjacent to the infamous Six Point Tavern on Dundas Street West. At the time, the area was rural, deserted and undeveloped, which Les, a sole proprietor, saw as a great opportunity. In the 1940s and 1950s, he worked with builders to established a thriving community with residential and industrial properties, now known as Six Points. As the road widened to accommodate the growing population, Les Alkins Real Estate was

subsequently moved down the street, and today Alkins Real Estate remains in the same Dundas commercial corridor at 4872 Dundas St. W. When he retired in the 1970s, Les’s son John joined the family business, and later John’s twin sister Judy followed suit. They are dedicated to helping clients buy and sell real estate in the community they grew up in, and the one their father helped develop. Today, they offer clients the same attributes established over 60 years ago: a strict code of ethics, honesty and a genuine care for clients’ needs— and

wellness Seven nutrients you may be missing Statistics Canada has found that a large number of us suffer from nutritional deficiencies because of an inadequate or inappropriate intake of food. To ensure that you continue living a happy healthy life, take the time to assess your diet to determine if you are lacking any of these essential nutrients: Omega-3 Fats: These medium and long-chain fatty acids are used by the body to make power-

ful anti-inflammatory molecules that are beneficial for decreasing inflammation and maintaining heart, brain and joint health. It is difficult to obtain the recommended amount from food alone, so this is where a fish-oil supplement can be a great option. Look for a supplement with high amounts of EPA and DHA in the ingredient list. Probiotics: The term “probiotic” refers to living microorganisms

(mostly bacteria) that provide a health benefit when taken at sufficient levels. Some experts have gone so far as to say that we have a “good bacteria deficiency” that has been linked to a range of long-term conditions including obesity, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, autism, depression, allergies, diabetes, celiac disease and colorectal cancer. Magnesium: According to

Secrets revealed to help you…

Beat Lower Back, Disc And Sciatic Pain Now

hankfully, new natural treatment methods help many find the relief they had been searching for. Sciatica is a painful condition that affects the sciatic nerve. The pain usually radiates into one or both buttocks, descends the back of the leg and can sometime be felt in the foot. It is often a severe, knife-like pain, but can also be noticed as numbness or tingling in the leg and foot. It is unpredictable and does not go away even when you change positions or lay down. Sciatica can result from years of poor posture, muscle strain, pregnancy, excess weight, wearing high heels, or sleeping on a very soft mattress. Sciatica is often a symptom of a slipped disc, pinched nerve or arthritis. Although pain pills may temporarily cover up the symptoms, our holistic approach can provide a more effective, long term relief. “Our team members apply their individual skills and knowledge to make an accurate diagnosis and administer the right treatment that will get the best result for each patient.”

Dr. Peter Ng has a special interest in natural pain relief and Chinese medicine.

If you suffer from chronic back, neck, arm or leg pain, call (416) 745-1974 or visit our website www.kiplingchiro.com Serving Our Community Since 1979

Health Canada, over a third of Canadians do not get enough magnesium from their diets. Not having enough magnesium is linked to a number of negative health issues including elevated markers of inflammation, which is associated with heart disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases. Vitamin D: Vitamin D is a hormone that is produced in the skin in response to direct sunlight, in particular exposure to UV-B rays. In the winter months it is extremely important to use a vitamin D supplement because there is zero production of this vitamin naturally. Optimal vitamin D levels have been linked to reductions in some types of cancer, shown improvements to the immune system and have even shown benefits for improving and maintaining good mental health. Calcium: Calcium is the single most inadequately consumed mineral among Canadians of all ages. More than 80 per cent of Canadians over 50 years of age, both male and female, reported inadequate intakes of calcium from food according to a Health

Canada report. It’s hard to get all the calcium through diet alone. Calcium supplementation in older adults has been shown to reduce bone loss and fracture risk, which are risk factors for osteoporosis. Fibre: A western diet full of processed foods means whole-foods are sadly lacking, and fibre intake often falls far short of the recommended 25 grams/day for women and 30 to 38 grams/day for men. The benefits of fibre include blood sugar regulation, weight maintenance, heart health, and gut health, so it’s important to try to fill this gap. Vitamin A: Approximately 40

per cent of adults do not meet their requirements for vitamin A from food. It is a fat-soluble vitamin essential for the function of the immune system, vision, reproductive health and cell communication. Vitamin A is one of the most common deficiencies around the world, with disastrous consequences. There are many types of supplements available at different dosages and in different forms including tablets, capsules, or liquid drops. Speak with your health care practitioner about which ones are right for you.

Treat and prevent a dry nose this winter Have you ever noticed how the insides of your nose become so dry in the winter? At this time of year, levels of humidity are very low, and the moisture around us quickly evaporates. Turning up the heat will not only cause dryer air, but it will also liberate dust, pollen, and other allergens into the home which can inflame the sinuses. The cold air of winter, in combination with allergens that are being forced out of indoor heating systems, can irritate a person’s nasal cavities. There are safe and naturally-sourced solutions to treat and prevent a dry nose, such as nasal irrigation. Ignoring symptoms like congestion, sneezing, a runny nose, or thick nasal discharge can aggravate lung problems and lead to other issues. These include reducing the senses of smell and taste, increasing the risk of mouth and throat infections, or worsening asthma.

New Clients Welcome Nasal irrigation not only helps to relieve sinus congestion, but it is also helpful for alleviating the sinus symptoms of allergic rhinitis. To breathe easy right now, however, take a look at a few tips for your everyday life to treat a dry nose and make winter far more enjoyable for the whole family: 1. Use a humidifier in your home to add moisture in the air.

2. Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water throughout the day. 3. Turn down the heat at night. Keep warm by adding a blanket or two. 4. Use a daily nasal irrigation solution. When used as indicated the solution helps to reduce excessive nasal dryness caused by dust or dry air.

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Seven Etobicoke high school students were among 90 young Canadians honoured by Princess Anne at a Duke of Edinburgh Award ceremony held in Ottawa Monday. During the late afternoon ceremony at the Fairmont Château Laurier, Princess A n n e p re s e n t e d Pe t e r Flagler, Grant Flagler, Rachel Herold, Dana Lobo, Daniela Sablinskas, Alison Nordal and Jacqueline Hymers with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award of Achievement. Founded by Prince Philip in 1963 as a way of encouraging personal development and community involvement in young people, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is open to youth aged 14 to 25, challenging them in the areas of community service, skill development, physical recreation, adventurous journey and residential project. “I have achieved many goals that I thought I could never do,” said Peter Flagler, who achieved his Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards as a student at Michael Power/ St. Joseph High School. “ The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has made me realize that people with disabilities can do anything if they put their mind to it.” Born with Down syndrome, Peter was inspired by his brother’s participation in the Duke of Edinburgh to undertake the challenge as well. To complete his community service, Peter acted as an altar server at his church; weeded gardens and cleaned toys at a women’s shelter; and helped coach a community rookie league boys’ baseball team. For his skill, Peter listed drumming, while he cited his participation in Special Olympics basketball, swimming and skiing for his physical recreation requirement. A five-day canoe trip in Algonquin Provincial Park fulfills Peter’s Adventurous Journey; and Peter volunteered as a leader-in-training at Camp Ekon for his Residential Project. The other winners and their achievements include:

A unique shelter-forshelter partnership is set to see a developer donate a month’s worth of funding to shelter a homeless youth for each condo unit it sells at its newest development in Etobicoke. For every suite sold within The Kip District: One – the first building of a five-tower community to be developed on Dundas Street West just west of Kipling Avenue – Concert Properties has pledged to donate the funds required to provide emergency accommodation for one homeless youth for the equivalent of one month through Youth Without Shelter’s (YWS) Adopt-A-Bed program. “We are thrilled to partner with Youth Without Shelter,” said Brian McCauley, president and chief operating officer of Concert in a statement. “As a developer that prides itself on making a difference within the communities where we live and work, we’re happy to give back to the Etobicoke community, in particular by providing shelter and support to some of those who need it

most.” The Kip District: One is slated to rise 28 storeys and feature 283 suites, which, when all units are sold, will translate into more than $213,000 in Concert donations to YWS – the only emergency residence and referral agency in Etobicoke serving homeless youth 16 to 24. Safe refuge According to Wendy Horton, YWS’s execut i v e d i re c t o r, t h e Etobicoke shelter’s Adopt-A-Bed program not only provides homeless youth with refuge in a safe, warm bed, but also with three nutritious meals and two snacks daily, daily care from a dedicated frontline team of child and youth care/social service workers, and personal hygiene products. “This generous partnership ensures that Youth Without Shelter is there as a safe haven where homeless young people can find shelter, support and the opportunity to grow,” Horton said in a statement. “ To g e t h e r w i t h

Concert Properties, we’re breaking the cycle of homelessness and assisting each youth as they journey to a life of self-sufficiency.” The Kip District: One is currently in registration with occupancy anticipated to begin in March 2018. Once complete, The Kip District will consist in its entirety of five towers, containing 1,500 condos, as well as a collection of commercial and retail shops on its six-acre site. Lauded by Concert as a “sustainable community with urbaninspired gathering places and expansive green spaces”, the community will include its own outdoor central public square and will be joined by landscaped pathways decorated with greenery and custom-made outdoor furniture. The central square is expected to host community events and programming for residents, such as farmers’ markets and outdoor concerts.

Crunch time for Etobicoke football teams High school football is getting down to crunch time for both public and Catholic high schools in Toronto – and Etobicoke schools, as usual, are right in the mix. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 12 (TDSB senior tier two championships) The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) senior tier two championships were held yesterday at North York’s Esther Shiner Stadium. The games went beyond our press deadlines. The ‘B’ division consolation final had neighbouring schools Humberside Collegiate from west Toronto against Etobicoke’s Lakeshore Collegiate; while the ‘A’ division championship final was an all-Etobicoke affair between Silverthorn Collegiate and Thistletown Collegiate. THURSDAY, NOV. 13 (TCDSB championship day) The Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) holds its championship day today at York University stadium. The junior final at 11 a.m. is an all-Etobicoke match-up between Michael Power/St. Joseph High School and Don Bosco. The senior final at 1 p.m. features Etobicoke’s Father Henry Carr against North York’s Chaminade College. (TDSB senior tier one semifinals) The public board, meanwhile, serves up its senior tier-one semifinal round at Esther Shiner Stadium today with Etobicoke schools involved in both games: Etobicoke’s Richview Collegiate against midtown’s Northern Secondary at 1 p.m., and Etobicoke Collegiate against Scarborough’s Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate at 3 p.m. The winners are slated to meet up next Thursday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. in the public board tier-one senior final. (TDSB junior championship) Also on tap today is the city public board junior football final at Esther Shiner Stadium at 11 a.m. between midtown Toronto rivals Northern Secondary and North Toronto Collegiate.

Tough luck for Etobicoke teams in volleyball, basketball The Toronto District School Board held its boys volleyball and girls basketball city playoffs on Tuesday and Friday, respectively. Etobicoke schools, however, were only lightly represented this time around. In Tuesday’s 4A city boys volleyball championship, Richview Collegiate fell 3-0 to Scarborough’s Sir John A. Macdonald (25-11, 25-13, 25-18). And in last Friday’s 3A city girls basketball championship, Martingrove Collegiate fell 74-24 to Oakwood Collegiate.

Etobicoke Lawn Bowling Club biggest and fastest growing in Ontario With 48 new members this year, the Etobicoke Lawn Bowling Club (ELBC) is now officially the largest club of its kind in Ontario and one of the top four largest clubs in all of Canada – a feat for which it earned a double award earlier this month. At the Ontario Lawn Bowling Association’s annual meeting in Woodstock Nov. 1, ELBC was awarded two sets of bowls (at a value of $350 each) for having the most new bowlers in Ontario for 2014 – one set from the provincial body, and another from Bowls Canada, the sport’s national association. With the addition of nearly 50 new members over the last year, ELBC’s membership now stands at 226 – a figure ELBC’s retired publicity director Dave Osborne attributes to the club’s participation in four wellness fairs over the last year in Etobicoke. “Lawn bowling has become important to wellness for all ages,” he said, noting that most of the club’s newest recruits joined ELBC as a direct result of the club’s participation in the wellness fairs. “The club is proud of our achievements and we look forward to more new members next year.” Over the past two summers, ELBC, located at 1313 Islington Ave. (just south of Dundas Street West), has hosted two Canadian championship tournaments – the Canadian National Vision Impaired Lawn Bowling Championships last

Honouring the best from the baseball, hockey and broadcasting world TOM GODFREY etg@insidetoronto.com Dubbed a ‘pride of Etobicoke,’ baseball phenom Joey Votto says he is deeply touched to be inducted along with three sporting giants into the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame. Votto joins former Toronto Maple Leafs player and two-time Stanley Cup winner Mike Walton, Toronto Marlboros coach Dan Brown and sports journalist Bob Weeks to be immortalized in the Hall that is located in the MasterCard Centre. More than 300 people packed the Old Mill Toronto Nov. 6 to celebrate the induction at a gala dinner, silent auction and fundraiser for the hall of fame. “I am home and it feels great to be back,” Votto told a cheering audience. “Etobicoke is where I grew up and it is always nice to be here with family and friends.” Votto was raised in the Lake Shore Boulevard and Royal York Road area playing ball with his dad, who passed away at the age of 52. His mom works as a sommelier and manager of a local restaurant. He attended Richview Collegiate and was part of the Etobicoke Rangers baseball program, before being signed by the Cincinatti Reds in 2002. He made his pro debut in 2007. Host Jerry Howarth, who’s the voice of the Toronto Blue Jays, said Votto is the highest-paid Canadian baseball player in history. He signed a 10-year contract extension worth more than $250 million in 2012. “Etobicoke brings a warm feeling to me,” Votto admitted. “I grew up here, I learned to play baseball here and I have friends here.” Votto is the winner of the 2010 National League Most Valuable Player Award, the National League Hank Aaron Award and the Lou Marsh Trophy, as Canada’s athlete of the year. Walton, who is affectionately dubbed ‘Shakey,’ wears Etobicoke on his sleeve and is proud to be raising his family here after living in many cities across North America. “I have lived and worked in Etobicoke for 50 years,” Walton boasted. “I love it here and it is very nice and touching to be honoured by my own community.” Walton won the Stanley Cup with

Weeks is the editorial director of SCOREGolf Magazine and host for SCOREGolf TV and SCOREGolf Radio. He is also a golf analyst for TSN and former curling columnist for the Globe and Mail. Weeks was last year named a recipient of the Golf Journalists’ Association of Canada Dick Grimm Award for lifetime contributions to golf and last May became the 67th person to be inducted into the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame chair Joanne Noble was encouraged by the high calibre of talent that they had to choose from. “We are pleased by the turnout and quality of inductees this year,” Noble said. “It is always a hard selection when you have so many great people to choose from.” Photos/PETER C. MCCUSKER

the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1967. He was the club’s leading scorer in 1967-68 with 59 points, that included 30 goals and 29 assists. Walton was traded to the Boston Bruins where he teamed up with prolific scorers Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr. He won a second Stanley Cup with the defending cup champion Bruins in 1972. Then sporting long sideburns and hair, Walton played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) and was inducted into the WHA Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the 1974 Team Canada that lost against the USSR in hockey’s Summit Series.

Walton has been working as a RE-MAX real estate agent and broker for more than 30 years and has also earned a spot in a real estate hall of fame. “This is a really special and quite an honour for me,” said an ecstatic Dan Brown. “It feels great to be recognized by my community and it is truly a humbling experience.” The lifelong Etobicoke resident made a name for himself as a player and 20-year coach for the Marlboros. He once tried out for the Winnipeg Jets and played hockey in Europe.

He was the leading scorer for the Fife Flyers in Scotland from 1983 to 1985. Brown became the West Mall Lightning coach in 1994 and both of his sons went on to play with the Marlboros. Author and broadcaster Bob Weeks said he grew up and still lives in Etobicoke. “This is home and it is very humbling to be honoured by the community,” Weeks said. “We have a strong heritage in sports and you can just tell by the amount of worldclass athletes that we produce in Etobicoke.”

awards and scholarships Also honoured that evening were Humber College students who received scholarships: Johnny Sheridan, Kateryna Tepylo, Brittany Verge and Katherine White. The George Gross Media Award went to Zachary McRae. The Jack Dominico High School Scholarship was awarded to Tamara Chackeris. The Colin Lorimer High School Scholarship went to Gabriel Lopez. The Doug Holyday Female Special Olympics Scholarship was awarded to Carlea Wilkie-Ellis. And the Jim Sturino Male Special Olympics Scholarship went to Stephen Graham. legends inductees This year, the hall has launched a Legends category to honour athletes, builders and media who were not recognized decades ago, some posthumously. Legends inducted posthumously include Turk Broda, a Leafs goalie for his entire NHL career and minor league and junior hockey coach, Ben Kern, who developed Junior Golf Canada and was one of Canada’s leading golf instructors and Annis Stukus, who led the Toronto Argonauts to Grey Cup victories in 1937 and 1938. Later in his career, he became general manager of the Vancouver Canucks and the Winnipeg Jets.

Finding your next used car is as easy as pie.

Get your will prepared at discount for charity Have your will or power of attorney completed by a lawyer at a discount rate and help support the Ontario Lung Association’s medical research and community program. The Will Campaign, an ongoing fundraising and awareness project program, sees lawyers in various communities offering to prepare basic wills for $100 and power of attorney (POA) for personal care (health) and continuing property (finances) for $50 each, with the money donated back to the Ontario Lung Association. Wills and POAs must be prepared individually, married couples doing all three pieces would total $400 or $200 each. Participants may have one or all of these documents prepared for them. Tips and ideas about preparing your will: • Ensure you prepare your will and both power of attorneys for personal care and for property. • Choose an executor who is business minded. • In the power of attorney for personal care, you can name one or more people to act as your decision maker. respect to your wishes with respect to health care with the people you name in that document. • Update your will when necessary – when you become an adult or after major life events such as the start or end of a marriage, birth of children, property changes or when you become a grandparent. • Will kits are not recommended; users don’t understand the terminology used in the documents. Donate to the Gastrointestinal Society at the LCBO this month Look for the box at LCBO checkout Until Nov. 30, help support the Gastrointestinal Society (GI Society) by making a donation at the checkout counters at any of the more than 635 LCBO stores across Ontario. November is inflammatory bowel disease awareness month, making this a particularly important time to take part in this program, said Gail Attara, CEO of the GI Society. The GI Society, she added, is committed to improving the lives of people with GI and liver conditions, supporting research and advocating for appropriate patient access to health care. “We appreciate the support we receive from the LCBO, its employees and especially its customers,” Attara said in a statement, noting the money raised from the LCBO fundraiser this November will help expand the GI Society’s programs across Ontario in 2015. “The LCBO’s provincewide store

network and supportive staff will help us raise essential funds and increase public awareness of this stigmatized disease area.” The GI Society is just one of 28 provincial and numerous local charities that will benefit from LCBO’s provincewide donation box program in 2014. In 2013, LCBO raised more than $8.2 million for charities through special programs and initiatives, of which $7.7 million was raised through in-store fundraising. “LCBO is pleased to partner with the GI Society and support a variety of worthy causes throughout the year,” LCBO President and CEO Bob Peter said in a statement. “The generous support from LCBO customers and staff helps these charitable organizations make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and communities across Ontario.”
