Two Olympians to marshal annual Santa Claus parade TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com It’s an Olympic year for the twodecade Lakeshore Christmas tradition. Canadian Olympic trampolinist Jason Burnett and rhythmic gymnast Anastasiya Muntyanu will be the grand marshals of this year’s Etobicoke-Lakeshore Christmas Parade. Santa Claus will join Etobicoke’s two Olympic athletes in the 22nd annual parade when it winds it way along Lakeshore from Dwight Avenue in Mimico to Thirty-Sixth Street in Long Branch on Saturday, Dec. 1 starting at 10 a.m. Parade officials are seeking a boost. Some 50 banner carriers are
earnestly needed for the parade route. Volunteers would start at Second Street School at 9 a.m. and be finished by noon that day. More than 200 students will take part in the parade wearing costumes from Cinderella and elves to toy soldiers and giant mice. Both costumed participants and students volunteers who carry sponsors’ banners in front of bands and floats receive community service hours. As a marshal, Muntyanu is returning to the popular parade she enjoyed as a child. “I was so excited to get that email asking me to be a marshal in the parade,” the 18-year-old said. “It’s an amazing opportunity. When I was small, I’d go to the parade >>>VOLUNTEERS, page 14

Toy drive for northern kids kicks off in Etobicoke More than $120,000 worth of toys will be distributed to children in remote communities this year CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Santa Claus made a surprise pit stop in Etobicoke last week to inspect some toys destined for children from his neck of the woods this holiday season. The Toys for the North annual toy drive, which this year will see more than $120,000 worth of toys distributed to children in some of Canada’s most remote northern communities, kicked off on Friday
at Thomson Terminals on Martin Grove Road – one of Santa’s secret toy warehouses. Joining the man in red at the event were a few of his helpful elves from the Canadian Toy Association (CTA), the Santa Claus Parade, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) – the partner agencies for the Toys for the North toy drive – and Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health and MP for Santa’s neighbouring riding of Nunavut. “As a proud northerner and
someone who grew up in a remote community in Nunavut, I can truly say what an amazing initiative this is and what a difference it makes to children in the north,” Aglukkaq said, noting that for many living in Nunavut’s most remote communities, the nearest toy store is a plane ride away. “Despite the distance of thousands of kilometres that separate many Canadians from these remote communities, we come together united in spirit and through kind
and meaningful gestures such as this. The generous donations today will benefit thousands of families not only in Nunavut, but in northern Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador.” This year, more than 75 CTA member companies donated toys for the Toys for the North campaign, with nine of those members – Lego, MGA, Tech 4 Kids, Crayola, Hasbro, K’Nex, Mattel, Spin Master, and Schleich – committing to major toy donations ranging from $5,000 to
$35,000 in value, said Kerry George, chair of the CTA. Each and every one of those toys will be wrapped with holiday paper before being delivered to the kids of the north thanks to Hallmark Canada’s generous donation last year of $25,000 worth of wrapping paper, George added. Hallmark also stepped forward again this year to donate $5,000 worth of recordable story books. “I’m absolutely thrilled to share >>>DONATIONS, page 12

War vet recalls horrors of battle ‘Lifetime’ teacher Ernie Scale didn’t speak of war for 57 years CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com “When you wear a poppy, you’re wearing it for the guys that didn’t make it.” That was the crux of the message 90-year-old Ernie Scale imparted upon Grade 10 students at Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School, during the school’s annual Remembrance Day ceremony last Friday. Pte. Scale – as the long-time New Toronto resident was known when he fought in the Second World War – knows what it’s like first hand to bury a friend in the battlefield. He shared with students his memories from the war, the friends he lost, and the importance of remembering the sacrifices soldiers made, and continue to make, on behalf of all Canadians. “It is a tremendous honour to meet anyone who served in World War Two. I can’t say how much it means,” said 15-year-old Samuel John Demmery, a John Redmond student and member of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. “His story was awe inspiring.” One of three sons born to an Italian immigrant father and French Canadian mother on a farm in Callander, Ont., Scale signed on to join the war effort in 1941 at age 19. After receiving training in Brantford, Camp Borden and Nova Scotia, Scale and 15,000 of his fellow recruits were shipped across the Atlantic to Aldershot, England aboard the Ile de France liner in early 1943. Once there, Scale and a few of his buddies joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, who were fighting side-by-side with a Polish division around the German headquarters at Caen, France. For seven weeks, Scale fought alongside his fellow Argylls, trying to reach a

stranded, battle-weary regiment that had nearly been wiped out. The Argylls were ordered to the town of Bourguebus, France to wait for reinforcements – and there they waited, Scale said, for five grueling days and four long nights. “We dug holes in the ground and we were not to move until the Americans and British showed up. In the meantime, the Germans knew where we were and they kept shelling us, all around us,” he told students, recalling for them the misery of those days. “There were dead horses and cows all around us. We had to take turns sleeping, but no one really slept. We ran out of water and lived on bully beef and hard biscuits.

We couldn’t wash or change our clothes.” After days of waiting, the Argylls were relieved by another regiment and began a jubilant march up to Falaise Gap – but their renewed good spirits were soon dashed once again. “As we were walking, it was about 3 a.m., we were singing and telling jokes,” he said. Then all of a sudden an explosive landed in the middle of their group, throwing Scale into the air. “My buddy got hit in the neck and the other guy in the side. Another guy came up to me and asked if I was OK and if I could run. ‘We gotta keep going,’ he said. So we had to leave the guys there,” Scale recalled, breaking down. “I wished them luck. know what happened to them after that. I never saw them since.” As the regrouped Argylls approached Falaise, they came across a group of German soldiers who had surrendered to another group along the periphery of a little town on the French hillside. After being told they may have to stay put for a while, Scale set about digging himself yet another bunker. “I never got the chance,” he said, noting that the Germans began shelling them in ambush. “They hit the guys, and I got hit. I tried to get up, but there was shrapnel in my leg. When they managed to save me, they took me down the road and a jeep came along... they took us far enough away so that the shelling wouldn’t hit us.” Scale was then transferred to a Polish field hospital, treated, then loaded onto a hospital boat bound for England, where he spent a further four months convalescing. He returned home to Callander in May 1945, just hours before hearing the news that the war had ended. “I went to bed that night, and my sister came knocking on the door and said ‘Ernie, Ernie get up! The war is over.’ I said, ‘I don’t care!’ and I went back to sleep,” Scale remembered. “When I came back, I never spoke about the war for 57 years.” It was for love of his country, he said, that he finally opened up. This year marks Scale’s 11th year speaking to the students of Father John Redmond about his war experiences. “I should tell you what a great country we live in,” he told his rapt audience, shortly before being presented with a 90th birthday cupcake. “It’s the best country in the world; no other country in the world will ever match Canada. Believe it – I know.”
Walter Wild dies LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com At heart, Walter Wild was always a teacher. He spent his career as a teacher, vice-principal and principal. But that wasn’t enough for him. He taught an annual learnto-swim program sponsored by the Rotary Club at York Memorial Collegiate and was director of a summer learn-toswim campaign sponsored by the York Township recreation department. He started the first day camp for the Northwestern YMCA to make sure more children learned swimming and other activities. He later served as the organization’s president. A f t e r re t i re m e n t , h e taught first aid with St. John Ambulance, going on to teach the instructors’ course and then becoming lead instructor in Ontario. He was also involved with Ontario’s association for retired teachers. Wild also ran a photography business for three years and acted as a warden at Islington’s St. Matthew’s Anglican Church. He enjoyed teaching his grandchildren things like how to fish and how to turn a stick and a tin can into a shovel. Wild died Oct. 23 at the age of 93. His family and friends held a celebration of his life Oct. 29. “He lived his years to the fullest,” his daughter, Linda Lee, said in a eulogy to her father. Wild was born and raised in York, later moving to Etobicoke with his young family. He attended Silverthorn Public School and York Memorial Collegiate before going on to Toronto Normal School and the University of Toronto to study teaching. After graduating, Wild taught for two years in a oneroom country school in Mount
OBITUARY Albert about 45 kilometres north of Toronto. He was soon working for the York Township Board of Education, teaching at D.B. Hood and Silverthorn public schools, serving as vice-principal at Roseland and Keelesdale public schools and going on to become principal at Cordella, Roseland and Kane Senior public schools. He also served as president of the York Township Principals’ Association. Former York South-Weston MP Alan Tonks fondly remembered Wild as his Grade 7 teacher. “His presence in the school was everywhere. He was in the hall, he was in the gym, he was in the classroom, he was on the field and everybody felt his presence,” Tonks said. “He didn’t seem to be out of place with his calling. He was a lifetime teacher.” In 1943, he married Ella, also a teacher. They had two children, Linda and David. The young family moved to Etobicoke in 1953. Lee said her parents loved travelling, jetting off to places such as England and the Balkans as well as enjoying cruises, an African safari and, in their 70s, climbing the Great Wall of China. Ella died in 2001 after 58 years of marriage. Their son, David, died in 2007. After his wife’s death, Wild developed a closer friendship and moved in with Margaret Condie, the widow of his former colleague George Condie. They enjoyed travelling together to England and Cuba and sharing day trips together. Margaret Condie died about a year ago. “They really had a grand old time together,” Lee said. Wild is survived by Linda, her husband Dave, grandchildren Lindsay, Nicole, Steve and Rob and six greatgrandchildren.

Make infrastructure funding a priority
A
coalition of municipal and business groups working to put the pressure on the federal government to come up with a national funding plan to deal with growing transit and infrastructure needs has made it clear that cities such as Toronto can’t wait much longer. The Municipal Infrastructure Forum was created by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) just over a year ago and is made up of representatives of municipal governments, business, chambers of commerce and other groups such as the Insurance Board of Canada and the Canadian Union of Public Employees. our view At a press conference in Toronto, speakers such as Toronto Board of Trade CEO ‘Under-designed’ Carol Wilding, FCM president sewer system Karen Leibovici and Robert Tremblay, from the Insurance puts city at risk Board of Canada, talked about the toll aging infrastructure systems are taking on the city. “Our overstretched networks are becoming a major barrier to our growing economy,” Wilding said. “Toronto’s problems of gridlock and poor transit connectivity are among the worst of any major urban centre in the world.” Tremblay also offered a warning about how Toronto would fare if it had been hit by a storm similar to what New York City had to deal with when super storm Sandy recently hit, and it wasn’t a pretty picture. He said Toronto’s water and sewer systems are “under-designed” and not built to withstand instances of extreme weather which seem to be becoming more common. “That’s what the real challenge is, making sure our infrastructure can withstand the new climatic realities,” Tremblay said. Missing from this equation, however, is clear direction from the federal government. What’s needed is guaranteed, long-term funding that recognizes the importance of these needs. These are investments in our future the federal government must take the lead on. Provincial and municipal governments also have a huge role to play, but the leadership must start with Prime Minister Stephen Harper. To that end, Toronto residents should be asking their MPs of all political stripes, but especially those who are members of the Conservative government, where they stand and what they are going to do. A sewer and water system that can’t deal with major storms puts the safety of residents at risk. Congested roads and a public transit system that’s decades out of date puts our jobs and economic future at risk. Toronto’s MPs must address these issues and start showing some political leadership. Symbolic Jarvis bike lane war wages on
I
t’s been a traumatic week for cyclists in downtown Toronto. The City of Toronto’s transportation department kicked off the week attempting to remove a pair of bike lanes on Jarvis Street. Members of the cycling community responded by doing their best to stop that work from taking place. The fight over the Jarvis bike lanes continues, an ugly echo of a very ugly election campaign in which the lanes themselves became a symbol of the very symbolic war on the car. For those on the ‘car’ side of that war, their removal is a victory – the knocking down of the Berlin Bike Lane, as it were. Of course, in addition to its properties as a symbolic battlefield, the Jarvis Street bike lanes also had a practical application: they were a piece of a larger infrastructure that makes it safer for cyclists to travel north and south to the east of Yonge Street. And to that end, the proponents of removing the lanes offered up a placating alternative. Just a few blocks further to the east, the city would take the bike lanes on Sherbourne Street and turn them into fully separated lanes. The argument there
THE CITY
david nickle
was that full separation from traffic would make an even safer route for cyclists than the Jarvis lanes, which are only lines of paint. I’m not so sure that’s the case. I’ve ridden those lanes as a commuter, and observed them as a pedestrian. And it seems to me that the separated lanes are more of a comfort to drivers on Sherbourne than they are to cyclists. The entire run isn’t finished, and the part I’ve ridden is the very northward section – from Wellesley Street to Bloor Street. The lanes vary between raised sections of curb about the height of the sidewalk, open spots where buses and taxis can pull up to the curb, and sections of road blocked off by speed-hump-sized raised curbs. The lanes are a little wider than a standard bike lane – making it possible for considerate cyclists to pass one another, with care. It is considerably more difficult – which is to say impossible – to get around
a car that has pulled onto the bike lane: crossing the curb that a car can mount easily would likely result in a tumble for anyone but a very experienced cyclist. And it’s not just cars. On Friday night, waiting in line to attend a concert at the Phoenix, it was possible to count dozens of concertgoers who were using the bike lane as an extended sidewalk as they made their way to the end of the very long line. Any cyclist trying to make his or her way down Sherbourne would have had to dismount and ride in the single-car lane, get off the bike and walk, or risk running into clutches of oblivious pedestrians. Again, a painted line would make it easy for a cyclist to quickly and carefully get around curbside obstacles. Under the current administration, separated bike lanes in the downtown core along with expanded recreational trails look to be the future of cycling infrastructure. And that infrastructure works very well to get cyclists off the roads now dedicated to cars. n D a v i d Ni c k l e i s T h e Guardian’s City Hall columnist. His column appears every Thursday. To the editor: Re: ‘Community has a role in planning for emergencies,’ Editorial, Nov. 1 I have noticed often that my neighbours are confused about bagging leaves and pick up days. I refer them to page 15 in the calendar that is sent to every household and outlines our responsibility for leaf and yard waste and the pick up schedule. The recent rain we had did run freely through the drainage system. Drains were covered with dense, compacted leaves. Bagging leaves means all the leaves. We do not have a system of regular leaf removal by any source but ourselves. It is our responsibility to help the city maintain and prevent problems. What I don’t see is our youth raking and bagging. They can do this after school and help their parents by doing this chore. Your editorial states: “Residents groups can also take a proactive role in dealing with areas of potential danger. For instance, they should be charged with stressing the importance of keeping trees healthy and creating a list of potentially dangerous trees.” In our area, many trees are very old and branches are falling all the time and wires have come down. On private properties, many need pruning and also removal as they are out of balance and dangerous. Some neighbours have experienced falling trees on their properties and the resultant removal has caused many problems of property damage to multiple neighbours and an increase in their own and neighbours’ insurances. When we own a property, we are also responsible to our neighbours and community to keep to a high standard in maintaining our property. It is not difficult to do and we all can do this to avoid unnecessary problems. Doreen Gabriel

Students, parents learn Health department issues warning over fake health inspectors visiting restaurants about high school life DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Phony health inspectors are talking restaurant owners into buying $300 first-aid kits, and the city’s public health department is urging Torontonians not to fall for the scam. According to a news release by Toronto Public Health,
both the health department and Toronto police have received several calls from businesses who have been contacted by people claiming to be Toronto Public Health inspectors. The fake inspectors tell the restaurant owners they must purchase a first-aid kit for $300 from them. Health inspectors don’t sell
first-aid kits, said Jim Chan, a food safety manager with Toronto Public Health. “If you are contacted by someone claiming to be a Toronto Public Health inspector attempting to schedule an inspection, asking for personal information or selling first-aid kits, contact your local police department,” said Chan.
“Legitimate public health inspectors do not call ahead to schedule inspections. In most cases, inspections are unannounced. As well, TPH inspectors do not sell first-aid kits to food operators.” To verify the identity of inspectors, operators can contact Toronto Public Health at 416-338-7600.

Woman’s death ‘suspicious’ Toronto police’s Homicide Squad has been called in to help 23 Division officers in north Etobicoke investigate the “suspicious” death of a woman Monday night. Police were called to an address on Kendleton Drive (near Kipling Avenue and John Garland Boulevard) shortly
before midnight Monday night on an “unknown trouble” call. There, they found the body of the deceased woman. “Homicide is assisting the division, but it’s still being investigated as a suspicious death,” said Const. Wendy Drummond. “It has not yet
been deemed a homicide.”
Drummond said police have identified the victim, but are not yet releasing her name. The investigation continues. - Cynthia Reason

Donations being accepted at Toronto Santa Claus Parade >>>from page 1 with you all today that so far, we have raised over a quarter of a million dollars worth of toys (over the last three years) for Toys for the North,” she said, noting that thousands of kids will benefit from the gifts. “We all want to let these kids know that there are people who care about them and remember them during the holiday season. We know these toys will go a long way to help stimulate, educate and amuse these children during the long, cold winter months.” Anyone wishing to donate new toys to the Toys for the North campaign can do so this year during the Toronto Santa Claus Parade on Sunday, Nov. 18. A booth will be set up outside the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) at Bloor Street West and Avenue Road for the duration of the parade to accept donations, said Parade spokesperson Dianne Schwalm. “You have no idea the

amount of joy all of you bring in helping to bring these toys to areas of Canada that unfortunately cannot access toys,” she said, noting that this year’s tally of $120,000 in toys so far has already far
exceeded last year’s total of $80,000, which will only “spread smiles further into the northern territories and most remote corners of our country.” Last year, some of those communities included Resolute Bay, Grise Fiord, Cape Dorset, Rankin Inlet, Tuktoyaktuk, Port Good Hope, Old Crow, just to name a few, added Insp. Todd Gilmore, the RCMP’s national co-ordinator for Toys for North campaign. “In 25 years in policing, I can tell you there’s nothing more satisfying than a team that gets results – and the Toys for the North team gets better results each and every year,” he said, adding that, in Nunavut alone, the RCMP delivered toys to 21 of 25 communities – some by snowmobile. “This year we make a difference in the lives of an ever-increasing group of children that don’t often see this type of generosity.”
IF YOU WORK IN ONTARIO, THIS IS YOUR FIGHT. On September 11, 2012, the Ontario Liberal government passed Bill 115, the Putting Students First Act, 2012.
Bill 115 is undemocratic, unconstitutional, and unprecedented. • It takes away the democratic rights of teachers and education professionals to bargain collectively. • It places the government beyond the reach of the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Ontario Labour Relations Act, and even the courts. • It takes local decision-making away from school boards and puts it in the hands of the provincial government. That’s why we’re standing against Bill 115. It sets a dangerous precedent for all Ontarians. In fact, the government has already threatened other public sector workers with similar legislation. As teachers, we teach your children to stand up for their principles. Today, we ask you to do the same.
What can you do to help? Join us in standing up for democratic rights. Let your MPP know that Bill 115 must be repealed.

>>>from page 1 with my parents. It was always fun. Christmas is my favourite holiday. Now I get to be part of it, which is unbelievable.” She hopes to inspire children to pursue their dreams. Born in Ukraine, the Bishop Allen Academy graduate is now studying life sciences at the University of Toronto with dreams of becoming a sports doctor to give back to the sporting community. Burnett was the defending Olympic silver medalist in men’s trampoline from the Beijing Olympics when a fall in the finals at this summer’s Games kept Burnett off the podium. His routine was slated to have had the highest degree of difficulty in the world. “When you’re jumping so high, minor mis-
takes are magnified,” the 25-year-old Etobicoke man said in an interview of his slight over-rotation that day. “It was pretty disappointing, obviously. It wasn’t a dangerous fall. I was shocked at the time. I thought I was still in it. Then I watched my teammate Rosie MacLennan take the gold medal the next day. That was time for celebration.” Burnett is also celebrating his role in the upcoming parade. “I’m pretty excited to do it,” he said. “I was in the Olympic heroes’ parade that went from Ottawa to downtown Toronto. It was a really cool experience for me. All the athletes were there. It’s wonderful to have all the public support.” To volunteer at the Santa Claus parade, register via email to lana. pimentel@rogers.com

TOMKEN
PACKING A TON OF FUN INTO A WELL-DESERVED GETAWAY IS A CINCH. Dining and entertainment are classic and refined or distinct and cool. Three Vegas-style casinos make you feel like a winner whether you’re in the game room, chillaxing at the spa or lounging in your room. Plates are full of Greek and Mexican favorites as well as Coney dogs and haute cuisine. Mega malls have hundreds of brand-name retailers where everything is priced just right, while walkable downtowns offer the quirky and unique. In a house on a famous boulevard sits the original studio that first recorded the Motown sound. Nearby works of art from Diego Rivera hang in the Detroit Institute of Arts and you’ll find Henry Ford’s first car in Henry Ford Museum. Throw in a wide assortment of lodging options and you’ll soon discover that the greater Detroit area is your new favorite escape!

Know snow? Tips for winter driving As the weather turns cold, are you prepared to face the hazards of winter driving? Some key tips for winter driving include: • If you can see your breath, it's time to switch. When the temperature approaches freezing, switch your allseason or high-performance tires to winter tires. With unique polymers and tread pattern elements, winter tires are optimized for more grip and the control you need in winter weather conditions. • Periodically check traction, or available grip, when driving in challenging con-

Safety comes first. Winter tires provide maximum performance during low winter temperatures and on ice, snow and slush. They perform better due to the combination of specialized winter tread patterns, deeper tread depth and unique tread compounds that remain softer in winter temperatures. The Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) in the U.S. and the Rubber Association of Canada (RAC) developed the mountain/snowflake symbol, which can be found on a tire's sidewall, to designate winter tires that meet the newest severe snow standards. Tires that have earned this symbol can be expected to provide 20 to 40 per cent more traction in winter conditions than conventional all-season tires, which may be the difference between driving safely and losing control. – Metroland Media

Nurse Next Door helps seniors prevent falls at home

How to make healthy choices as you age Whether you are 26 or 62, when it comes to making healthy lifestyle choices – it's never too late to start. If you focus on making small, sustainable changes, those choices will soon start to add up and before you know it, goals that once seemed overwhelming now feel much more attainable. Take a look at four important areas to concentrate on for overall good health:
Sleep – Getting a solid amount of shut-eye is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, leaving us more alert, energetic and better able to function. The National Sleep Foundation suggests seven to nine hours a night. To get started, try turning out the lights a half-hour earlier every night. Exercise – Physical activity plays an important role in keeping our bodies healthy and functioning properly. Use everyday
activities to add more movement into your life - Put on your favourite song and dance along while you do housework. Stress – Continuous stress without relief can lead to physical symptoms like headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, and problems sleeping. To combat these symptoms, try meditation - all it takes is a calm mind and some deep breathing. Diet – A healthy diet is not about deprivation. Rather, it is about increasing energy, stabilizing mood, and keeping you as healthy as possible. Opt for a piece of fresh fruit and some nuts for your afternoon snack to keep you full and energized. For those days when time is tight, try stocking up on healthy, frozen options for a quick meal. By making one small change in each category you will soon see that one healthy choice leads to another. – newscanada.com
Ruffled area rugs, improper footwear, lack of bars and hand rails, poor lighting and lack of rubber bath mats are just a few reasons why seniors are subject to dangerous falls in their homes. One in three people over the age of 65 fall each year and with falls being the result of 85 per cent of senior’s injury-related hospital admissions in 2010, fall prevention is an increasingly important issue in the Etobicoke and Toronto West area. Leading home care provider, Nurse Next Door, is giving back to the community by providing FREE home safety inspections for local seniors. During Fall Preven-

tion Week from November 26 to November 30, registered nurses trained in fall prevention will tour local homes to identify any hazards that may cause injury. “We are making the lives of local seniors safer by checking homes for common fall hazards,” says Michael Lu, owner of Nurse Next Door in Etobicoke/Toronto West. “Our goal is to offer this free program to 100 seniors in our community and ensure none of these individuals end up in hospital this winter due to a preventable fall.” The aim is to educate families on how to keep seniors safe so they can live happy, enriched lives in the comfort of their homes.
