Mimico GO station to be upgraded

Provincial government announces $44-million investment for makeover The Mimico GO Station is about to get a long-awaited makeover, thanks to a $44-million infusion from the provincial government. Calling the cash influx “welcome

news” to the 1,050 EtobicokeLakeshore area commuters who use Mimico GO Station every day, local MPP Laurel Broten said that by investing in the station, the Liberal

government is making it easier for commuters to take public transit. “Improved platforms and more parking spaces will give commuters a better, more accessible station

and make public transit easier to use,” Broten said at Tuesday’s funding announcement at Mimico GO Station. >>>STATION, page 9

Waking up the Humber

| ETOBICOKE GUARDIAN | Thursday, October 11, 2012

etg@insidetoronto.com

TAKE OFF: Wakeboarding is popular on Lake Ontario, Wasaga Beach and even Lake Simcoe. But on the Humber River? Well, that’s exactly what happened over the long weekend. Braden Loi practised his sport of choice, jumping waves and making them as well. Loi mounted a small board upstream, known as a wakeboard, which was pulled by a winch down the river to one of the small dams he used as a launching pad.

Teens step up to the tee during golf lesson Schools, golf community team up to teach students the game CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com When Maria Garcia and her classmates first stepped up to their respective tees Tuesday afternoon in the sports field behind Etobicoke Collegiate Institute (ECI), nary a one of them was quite able to make solid contact with that elusive white ball on first swing. But with a little advice from Colin Imrie, Weston Golf Club’s resident pro, on proper grip and swing technique, they were all soon chipping like the pros. “I learned a lot. When I was

playing golf before, I didn’t know the proper way,” Maria, 15, said gleefully after a particularly good shot. “I think it’s good that we’re learning golf, because a lot of people think it’s boring when they see it on TV. But it’s really a lot of fun when you actually play. You use your brain.” Maria was just one of about 20 students on hand at ECI Tuesday for the official launch of the Golf in Schools High School Program. Created by Golf Canada in partnership with the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of Canada and Physical and

Health Education (PHE) Canada, and presented by Callaway, the Golf in Schools program is designed to introduce Canadian high school and elementary school aged children to the sport of golf as part of their physical education curriculum. “If we want to grow the game of golf, this is the best place to start - here in our schools,” said Scott Simmons, CEO of Golf Canada. The Golf in Schools elementary program, he added, began just three years ago but already close to 1,800 elementary schools across Canada are

registered with the program. The High School Program, meanwhile, was piloted in 11 high schools earlier this year and so far 40 schools across the country have signed up. The program – which provides both the necessary golf equipment and curriculum – is designed to help physical education teachers to “plan and deliver quality learning experiences that support the further enhancement and refinement of fundamental movement skills and develop sport specific skills related to golf.” “The idea of getting golf

into schools is a great one,” said Gary Bernard, CEO of PGA Canada, and a former physical education teacher himself. “I wish I had had this program when I was teaching.” Not only does the Golf in Schools Program help students hone their driving and putting skills, it also shapes their attitudes towards leading healthy, active lives – an important takeaway, said PHE Executive Director Chris Jones, particularly when 1.6 million Canadian youth are considered overweight or obese. “Active kids are more focused and better prepared to learn,” he said of the ben-

efits of Golf in Schools. “Sports are the building blocks to active, healthy lives.” As for the kids of ECI – one of about 30 high schools across Ontario currently teaching the Golf in Schools curriculum – their golf skills are steadily improving under the guidance of phys ed teacher Michelle Kaske. For the last two-anda-half weeks, Kaske has been making use of the provided putters, irons, greens, tees and balls to instill in her students a respect for a game they’ll be able to enjoy the rest of their lives. “Golf is a great lifetime sport for the students to be learning,” she said. “This is a wonderful program.”

Raise fares to provide service riders need

The Etobicoke Guardian is published every Thursday and Friday at 175 Gordon Baker Rd., Toronto, ON M2H 0A2, by Toronto Community News, a Division of Metroland Media Group Ltd.

Guardian carriers earn praise for work

To the editor: The TTC is essential to the riders to earn their salaries, as much as it is to ensure their business operations remain active. That’s what makes it essential. Instead of spending money catering to the entertainment of riders, such as Internet access and next train arrivals. Riders don’t need to be enticed to ride the TTC; it’s essential they ride it. Provide the people with the service they need and they’ll be willing to pay for it. I suggest increasing fares by $1. It would not be unreasonable if this would mean providing the service riders need and expect.

T

his is International Newspaper Carrier Week. Around the world, boys and girls, men and women deliver critical community information in a timely fashion, whether it’s news or advertising flyers. We certainly appreciate the dedication of our newspaper carriers at The Guardian. Why would someone become a newspaper carrier? It’s a wonderful proving ground for a young person to develop life skills. It’s an excellent opportunity for an older carrier to earn money and feel satisfaction of a job well done while serving the community. Here are six experiences that benefit a carrier: • Responsibility: A newspaper carrier accepts the challenge of satisfying their customer every single time they our view deliver a newspaper to a doorstep. Being a newspaper carrier Carriers bring means one has a commitment to customer service – and learns news to the quickly the importance of reaching the customer’s doorstep with community the newspaper each and every time. • Handling money: For many carriers, having a newspaper route means the first time having a bank account. This develops yet another key life skill in a youth. • Small business sense: The better customer service, the more smiles from customers. Miss a delivery and you deal with the complaint. A good carrier generally benefits with more tips from customers too! • Confidence and sense of achievement: Being a carrier means tangible achievement every time a route is delivered. Every thank you from a customer teaches a carrier good work is rewarded. Knowing you deliver your route on time every time gives a carrier confidence and satisfaction of knowing a job inside out and doing it well. • Discipline: Residents wait for their newspaper. Calls for missed deliveries come in mere minutes after the time a customer usually gets their newspaper. The discipline developed through delivering a newspaper carries over into discipline in other life tasks. • Understanding community: Your community newspaper is your window to community life. A carrier brings that life to your door. As a carrier, you get to know the people on the route – friends and neighbours – and that brings a neighbourhood community a little closer together. So being a newspaper carrier is much more than simply taking a wagon through streets to put pieces of paper on the doorstep. It’s ensuring a product that adds value to life in the community gets to the people of the community. We salute our newspaper carriers and wish them much sunshine as they deliver their newspapers and flyers this week. Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. Council embarrassed itself with bad behaviour

I

t’s not quite fair to say that Toronto Council utterly disgraced itself last week as it dealt with the devastating report by Toronto Ombudsman Fiona Crean on the city’s flawed and hamstrung public appointments process. At the same time, if this council were your parents, you would have done everything possible to avoid bringing your fiance home for Thanksgiving dinner this year. It’s almost sad to bring it up again, in the same way that families like city council don’t a week later dig at the way the turkeyand-scotch grudge match between Dad and Uncle Lothar ruined the holiday for the rest of the family. So yes – the entire family that makes up Toronto Council did not disgrace itself. But faced with a report that sharply critiqued both the mayor’s office and some councillors who sit on the civic appointments committee, a small but significant rump of the ruling party smeared muck over the entire insti-

THE CITY

tution. Crean’s report said that the mayor’s office had interfered in the 2011 civic appointments process to the point that city staff were unable to do a fair job. It found that the mayor’s staff had attempted to force staff to boycott a newspaper not in the mayor’s favour, and to remove any mention of diversity from city advertisements. The report said that in one case, a potential appointee to a board had a conflict of interest, and when staff attempted to deal with it, an unnamed councillor, since identified as York West’s Giorgio Mammoliti, threatened staff members in a closeddoor meeting. The response from Mammoliti and some others was classic Thanksgiving-dinner attack

strategy. Mammoliti began the debate by questioning Crean’s political neutrality. When this provoked an overly-angry response from Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks, which Perks later apologized for, Mammoliti huffed about the sorts of violent acts he might perform on his out-of-line colleague. Mammoliti explained that it wasn’t so much Crean’s neutrality as that of the rest of city staff that was the problem, then came back and accused the ombudsman of being deliberately provocative. Frances Nunziata, the speaker of council whose role is to maintain civility, was chair of the committee at the time of the threatening behaviour the report cited. She nearly brought Beaches-East York Councillor Janet Davis to tears, after she implied that an unsubstantiated complaint she’d made about Davis’ conduct to the city’s integrity commissioner, in fact indicated that the left-

leaning Davis had tried to influence the process too. Budget chief Mike Del Grande had the good sense to throw up his hands, leave the dinner table as it were, telling his colleagues “we might as well be alley cats in the alley.” It was finally left to Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday to try and bring back civility and point out that the actual recommendations in the report – to create a more accountable way for staff to deal with the crucial process of putting private citizens on public boards – were possibly the one thing everyone could agree on. And in the end, it kind of worked. The one thing we can be thankful for, looking back at this disgraceful display of civic behaviour, is that there’s no hard liquor available in Toronto Council chambers. n D a v i d Ni c k l e i s T h e Guardian’s City Hall columnist. Local food bank seeks community assistance Donations haven’t kept up with increase in need FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com With an increase in need and near-bare shelves, the Weston Area Emergency Support (WAES) food bank is pleading with the community to help keep racks stocked. “We are fortunate because Weston is good to us as a community supporting the food bank,” said Diana Stapleton, chair of WAES. “The summer depleted our resources.” WAES, which has served the area bounded by Hwy. 401, Black Creek Drive, Eglinton Avenue and Royal York Road since 1985, has seen a 25 per cent increase in need this year over last, she said. “Our donations are not keeping up, and we have had to spend double what we spent last year to buy food

to fill the gap,” Stapleton said. “We can’t keep this up. We are looking to make the community aware of the problem.” She noted it’s not just new Canadians seeking assistance, but people who might not have relied on the food bank previously. “They can’t afford to pay for their apartment and pay for food,” she said. “Forty per cent of the people we see are children.” While several schools, including Weston Collegiate I n s t i t u t e a n d We s t o n Memorial Junior Public School, have held food drives in the past, it hasn’t been enough to keep up with demand, Stapleton said. Several drives are held throughout the year to help keep shelves replenished, including at Halloween, a collection during the Weston

Santa Claus Parade and a spring fundraiser, but the food bank is running low on supply, she said. WAES, located at 1844 Weston Rd. near Lawrence Avenue, provides three to five days worth of food to clients. Clients can receive a basket of food once a month, which includes a mix of fresh and non-perishable goods, such as apples, lettuce, milk, bread, pasta, pasta sauce, canned fish, canned beans and canned vegetables. “We will buy bags of potatoes or carrots,” Stapleton said. “Sometimes people drop off apples. Last week someone donated pumpkins. You never know what you’re going to have.” The food bank is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 11 a.m. To donate, call 416247-3737.

Police

Man charged with robberies A Brampton man was arrested last week is now facing 11 charges in connection with a series of robberies in north Etobicoke and beyond over the last five months. According to police, the first in the string of four robberies occurred on Saturday, May 12 shortly before midnight. The accused allegedly entered a restaurant on Finch Avenue West, indicated he had a gun, threatened an employee and demanded cash. The employee complied and the suspect fled. Then, on Monday, Sept. 3, the accused allegedly entered a convenience store on Albion Road with a gun in his hand

and his face covered at around 5:25 p.m. The accused asked an employee to open the store’s cash register, and the employee complied. The accused is charged in connection with another robbery at a clothing store on Bathurst Street on Wednesday, Oct. 3. During the fourth robbery, which occurred at a restaurant on Finch Avenue West on Thursday Oct. 4, the suspect entered the premises at around 12:27 a.m., and walked up to the cash register. When the employee opened the register, the suspect grabbed a quantity of cash and attempted to flee the scene.

The employee tried to stop the suspect, but was punched several times in the face. Police were called and the suspect was arrested a short distance away while trying to flee the scene. During the arrest of the accused, a gun was seized and was determined to be a pellet gun. Rene Alemao Chavez, 25, of Brampton is charged with: three counts of robbery; robbery while armed with a firearm; two counts of disguise with intent; possession of a firearm contrary to prohibition order; and four counts of failure to comply with probation. He appeared in court on Thursday, Oct. 4.

Carrier Appreciation Week

Newspaper carrier recognized for dedication CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com For the last 22 years, Malti Gupta has braved wind, snow, sleet and rain to deliver newspaper for Toronto Community News (TCN) every week to

as many as 1,000 of her neighbours – and no matter the weather, she always does so with an infectious smile on her face. “If we had 500 of her, we would be 500 times better. She’s just one of those really

great carriers that we wish we had more of,” said Donna Umpleby, a circulation manager with TCN, which publishes The Bloor West Villager as well as eight other community newspapers across Toronto.

“She’s just a great lady with a great spirit and great personality. She’s a perfect example of what a carrier should be.” As TCN’s longest standing carrier, Gupta is being recognized for her dedi-

cation during this week’s International Newspaper Carrier Week. The annual appreciation week honours the hundreds of thousands of men and women like Gupta who make such an important contribution to the industry. “Our carriers really are the lifeblood of what we do here at Toronto Community News,” said TCN’s Director of Circulation Mike Banville, noting that TCN’s workforce of more than 3,000 carriers aged 10 to 90 deliver more than a million papers weekly to the communities of Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, Bloor West Village, ParkdaleLiberty Village, York, E a s t Yo rk , Be a c h Riverdale, and City Centre. “They are so, so important to what we do.” Fo r Gu p t a , w h o began carrying for The Scarborough Mirror on Feb. 6, 1990, the job has been one that was born of convenience and has grown into a passion over the years. “When I started, I wasn’t getting the paper. All of my neighbours were, but I wasn’t,” she explained with a laugh. When she called TCN’s offices to explain her conundrum, one of The Mirror’s thenmanagers inquired as to whether or not Gupta would like to take on the problem route herself – and thus

Malti Gupta is the longest serving paper carrier for Toronto Community News, making sure over 600 homes in Scarborough get their newspaper for the past 22 years.

guarantee herself delivery every week. Gupta, who was running a daycare out of her Scarborough home at the time, readily agreed. And the rest, as they say, is history. Gupta, who came to Canada from India in 1970, began by delivering The Mirror 22 years ago to just the houses on her street, but as time went on and she garnered a reputation for reliability, her route steadily grew. “Meeting people in my community has been the best part of the job for me. Plus, it’s the best exercise – I’ve maintained my weight,” she said, laughing. “I love what I do. I love walking and I love meeting people, and that’s what this job is all about.” Also being recognized by TCN this week for their longstanding service are Scarborough Mirror carriers Margaret McFarlane and Selvaratnam Jesuthasan, who have both served as carriers for 19 years.

On the cover Christine Kent (pictured on the front page) has been nominated as an outstanding carrier, with excellent service on her route, ensuring the deliveries are priority even when she requires some rest and relaxation and takes a vacation, her route is covered with

someone who is also dependable. She takes much pride in this job and it shows in how much her neighbors appreciate her excellent delivery service. She has delivered The York Guardian for nine years, which shows true dedication to this job and her community. She has also been able to pay for her driving school lessons, saved for college and has just graduated from nursing school. What a success story! Congratulations Christine!

Kia enters ranks of Top 100 Best Global Brands Kia Motors Corporation has entered the exclusive list of the Top 100 Best Global Brands according to the 2012 study released by Interbrand, the world’s largest brand consultancy agency. Kia’s remarkable increase in brand value is now estimated at $4.1 billion USD, which firmly sets the automaker at 87th place on the Top 100 Best Global Brands list. This is a 50 per cent increase from last year’s estimated brand value and far exceeds the average automotive brand value growth rate of 11 per cent. Expert analysts executed the 2012 edition of Interbrand’s annual Best Global Brands study through a comprehensive brand performance analysis using best practice research methodology.

The study measures a corporation’s financial performance in terms of the raw financial return to investors; role that a brand plays in the actual purchase decision; and brand strength, which is the ability of a brand to secure the delivery of expected future earnings. In addition to the major advances Kia has made on the product front, the company has also been executing numerous large-scale marketing initiatives that have helped raise awareness of the brand, including its sponsorship agreements with the world’s premier sporting events like the FIFA World Cup, Australian Open and National Basketball Association. – Metroland Media
