Model boaters tired of the muck Metro Marine Modellers want city, TRCA to clean up the sailing pond CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com The Metro Marine Modellers (MMM) of Toronto may soon be choked out of their longtime home at Humber Bay Park East’s Sailing Pond by an overgrowth of aquatic weeds – that is, if revitalization plans for the park don’t force their relocation first.

Rick Levick, captain of the group’s sail division, said 18 MMM members spent much of the day on a recent Saturday wading into the two-acre pond and pulling up heavy mounds of algae-soaked seaweed to clear a small portion of water on which to sail their racing model sailboats and other radio-controlled watercraft. “It wasn’t exactly the most

fun job, but we were out there from 9 a.m. to about 2 p.m., and we cleared a fair bit of the pond,” he said. “There’s still a lot more work to be done, though. What we cleared was just the tip of the iceberg.” MMM has a long history with the Sailing Pond at Humber Bay Park East, using it as their home base for regular Sunday regattas, as well other weekly

events, from April to October for the last 30 years. In fact, Levick said, MMM members were even invited by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) to help guide the design of the pond back when the Humber Bay parks were first being created back in the late ’70s and early ’80s. A transit-themed debate hosted by local not-for-profit Our Place Initiative (OPI) drew only four of the 10 candidates registered to run in Ward 3 Etobicoke Centre Tuesday night. Murray Foster, field director for OPI – a grassroots organization whose aim is to encourage, build and facilitate civic engagement in the community – said the transit theme was chosen as the focus of the debate because of its significance to Etobians. “We decided to focus on transit tonight, because we feel transit is perhaps the most important issue facing Etobicoke and the GTA right now,” he told the 50-odd residents who attended Tuesday’s debate, which was moderated by Torontoist writer David Hains. Participating candidates Frank D’Urzo, Peter Fenech, Stephen Holyday and John >>>candidates, page 20

Thistletown C.I. takes top spot at charity cookoff

Day of the girl

Event raised money and awareness for youth hunger JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Students from Thistletown Collegiate Institute rocked the kitchen, placing first in the Wrap Up with Rice Event. Students from Thistletown, as well as Heydon Park Secondary School and Western Tech Commercial School showcased the skills they learned as part of their schools’ culinary arts programs while raising awareness of youth hunger and poverty initiatives on Friday. The cook-off tasked the competitors with creating a unique rice dish at the President’s Choice Cooking School at 60 Carlton St. It was the last event in the Toronto District School Board’s (TDSB) Feed Tomorrow week, an event designed to help raise funds and awareness toward eradicating child hunger. “We want to raise awareness of our student nutrition programs and breakfast programs,” said Catherine Parsonage, executive director of the Toronto Foundation for Student Success, the TDSB’s independent charity. “The culinary arts programs are so important because it’s not enough to just feed students - we want to teach them to cook.” She added the programs focus not just on preparing healthy food, but on meeting budgetary limits. “It’s all about how to cook using fresh, healthy and inexpensive ingredients,” she said. “There’s no point in teaching them how to make filet mignon when they won’t have that to make at home.”

Thistletown Collegiate students Neosha Newton, left, Amanda Korkola and Danielle Lemieux prepare their winning ‘jacked up jerk chicken and rice’ dish during the Wrap Up With Rice cook-off held Friday at the Loblaws location on the site of the old Maple Leaf Gardens.

As for the competition, the students from Thistledown emerged victorious for their “jacked up jerk” recipe, featuring coconut rice, jerk chicken wrapped in Swiss chard and mango salsa. “We’re lucky to have a school that’s very involved in the culinary arts,” said Grade 12 Thistletown student Amanda Korkola. “We go on special field trips and learn things like first aid and CPR and get our food handler’s certificates and SmartServe (server credentials.)” She added Thistletown has its own garden in which they grow many of the ingredients used in their dish. The culinary arts are popular among students in the schools in which they are offered. “Most kids sign up for it, even if they don’t stick with it all the way through high school,” said Spencer Marshall, a Grade 11 student at Western Tech. His school finished

second in the competition with a rice cake and Asian salad dish. Ashtae Foster, a Grade 12 student at Heydon Park, said virtually every student at her school wants to take part in the program, which could open doors in the culinary arts down the road. “We’ve even learned how to do master dishes like lobster and shrimp, fettuccine and linguine,” she said. Thistletown won $500 for its school’s nutrition program for winning the competition, while Western Tech took home $300 and Heydon Park students won $200. Other schools across the TDSB also benefited from the event, with Breakfast for Learning handing over a cheque for $445,000 to the Toronto Foundation for Student Success.

Hurricane Hazel: Lessons learned

S

ixty years ago today, Toronto woke up to a scene of horror. On the night of Oct. 15, accumulated heavy rains associated with Hurricane Hazel led to flooding that killed 81 people. On Raymore Drive along the Humber River, 32 houses were washed away and 35 people were killed. Five volunteer firefighters died when their truck was swept away as they tried to help a stranded motorist caught in the Humber’s flood waters. Along with the Humber, the Don and Rouge rivers and Highland Creek flooded their banks with enormous amounts of fast-moving water. By the time it was over, some 4,000 families across southern Ontario and more than 1,800 in Toronto had been left homeless. While 1954 may seem a long time ago to many, the impacts of Hurricane Hazel and how it changed land usage and development in are felt to this day. Also, our view Toronto judging by the many letters we’ve received from readers regarding Conservation the 60th anniversary, it is still well remembered by those who Authority lived through it or lost family formed as result members. See our collected coverage of Hurricane Hazel and letters from our readers at http://tiny.cc/drxrnx In her letter, Yvonne Rice remembers how she and her husband tried to help at Raymore Drive: “We drove to Raymore Drive and when we got there the Humber River was huge and houses were floating down the river with people on top screaming for help. The firemen were all there and had ropes and were making a human chain to reach the stranded people. I will never forget their cries for help as long as I live.” Madeline McDowell, who is now vice-chair of the Humber Watershed Alliance, was 13 when Hurricane Hazel struck. She said at the time many didn’t realize how deadly the storm had been until the next day. Coming on the heels of days of heavy rains in southern Ontario, Hurricane Hazel resulted in some 20 billion gallons of water rushing down the Humber, washing away everything in its path – bridges, houses, vehicles and people. After the hurricane, a conservation authority, now known as Toronto Region Conservation Authority, was formed to improve flood control measures and regulate development on flood plains. A hard lesson was learned by the death and destruction of Hurricane Hazel, but our city is now much better prepared for natural disasters.

column

To those considering casting their vote at advance polls: think about it

W

ith advance polls open this week, it is tempting for those with strong opinions about the future occupant of the Toronto mayor’s office to put on their voting pants and cast ballot now rather than Oct. 27. Certainly by this point, anyone paying even a bit of attention has heard enough from the top three mayoral candidates to make a choice. As long as one doesn’t hold with the idea of strategic voting – which is to say, watching the polls up to election day and deciding where their vote best goes to, ahem, defeat a particular candidate – then there’s no reason to wait. If only it were as simple as that: that the future of the city rests solely, or even largely, on the shoulders of one mayor. It doesn’t, of course. There are 45 pairs of shoul-

david nickle the city ders including the mayor, and while the mayor has enough influence to carry most votes, the buck ultimately stops with 44 city councillors who can support or thwart an agenda as they see fit. And while mileage may vary, it’s a fair guess that most voters haven’t had nearly as close a look at their local ward candidates as they have at the ChowFord-Tory trifecta. With the high-octane drama in the mayor’s office this past term, it’s also more of a challenge to assess the record of one’s incumbent councillor. All of them have been operating under extraordinary circumstances – working in an arena that is one-half local governance and one-half Lord of the

Flies. There are a few incumbents who’ve stood out either as candidates for reelection or for the boot. Giorgio Mammoliti, the Ward 7 councillor surely leads the pack in the latter: more than any other councillor not blood-related to the mayor he’s been a very publicly destructive force on council. Ron Moeser’s terrible attendance record can be partially excused as he was laid up for nearly a year from ankle surgery gone bad, but otherwise Ward 44 voters would be justified in turfing him. Similarly long-serving councillor Norm Kelly, on the other hand, probably deserves another victory lap in Ward 40 solely on the basis of his supply-teacher/ deputy mayor role in the final, potentially fractuous year of this last term. Others, like Ward 22’s Josh

Matlow or Ward 27’s Kristyn Wong-Tam, have maintained an active enough rookie term to make reelection a relatively easy choice. What about those many incumbents who kept their heads down through the term? And what do voters do in those seven wards with no incumbent? don’t vote in haste It boils down to this: voters who take advantage of advance voting opportunities have more before them than whether it’s to be Ford More Years or four new years. Getting it right will be delicate work, and nothing to be hasty about. David Nickle is The Guardian’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Reach him on Twitter: @DavidNickle

Hurricane’s damage to home made it unlivable To the editor: Re: ‘Marking Hurricane Hazel’s 60th’, Oct. 9, The Guardian. When Hurricane Hazel hit us, I had just turned 14 a few days prior. We lived on Gilhaven Avenue. which was the last street off the bottom of Raymore Drive. We lived three houses in from the footbridge that washed out and sent water flooding around the bend and took out that row of houses at the bottom of Raymore. (You can see our house in that picture they always show of the bottom of Raymore Dr ive and the missing houses.) During the night we were woken by loud knocking on our door telling us to get to higher ground as the Humber was flooding its banks. Many of our neighbours and ourselves went up to the Westmount Army and Navy Club, which I believe was on Kingdom Street. They took us in for the night. The next morning when we came back to our home it was hard to believe the devastation. The low-lying river had risen so high and spread out so much it looked like a lake. The bridge was gone and we then realized that so were the houses so close to us. Our

basements were flooded and we weren’t allowed to stay. We were put up in motels along the lake shore. Eventually my brother and myself went to stay with our grandparents in Uxbridge while my mom dad and younger brother went to live with relatives. After a few weeks my mom and dad had enough of us being split up and decided we were all going back home. We were the first family to return and the Toronto Star came out and took our picture on our front porch and wrote an article about what we went through. Our basement was still flooded and we had trouble with rats from a dump that was on the other side of the river. It was hard getting up into Weston without the bridge as we didn’t have a car. Compared to what happened around the corner from us, it was a small price to pay. I had known a younger girl in one of those houses whom I sometimes played with and traded comic books with. Sometime during the next year we were told we could no longer live in our houses anymore and all the families on Gilhaven were given a sum of money to relocate. Sandra Wilkie (nee Foote)

Father put on a brave face for the kids To the editor: Re: ‘Marking Hurricane Hazel’s 60th’, Oct. 9, The Guardian. We lived at 111 Laurelcrest Ave. (Bathurst and Wilson) and my father tried so very, very hard to get us to safety to my grandmother’s house on Evelyn Avenue, near the (old) Junction. He piled five kids in the car, pajamas, raincoats, boots, hats, gloves and teddy bears. We almost made it to Bathurst Street, but the little bridge was washed out. Back to our home, in the torrential downpour of rain and unbelievable winds. He carried us, one by one by one, over his shoulder, into the house. He was scared, little did we know. Will never forget. Pictures do not do it justice. Lynne Foster

Recalling a near-death experience To the editor: Re: ‘Marking Hurricane Hazel’s 60th’, Oct. 9, The Guardian. When Hurricane Hazel hit on Oct. 15, 1954 I was working at the Bank of Commerce at St. Clair and Dufferin and my husband was picking me up to drive to Maple where we lived with my parents. We tried to go across Steeles Avenue and just West of Dufferin Street there was a dip in the road and we thought we could make it through as we could see headlights under the water approaching us from the west. That did not happen and the car stalled and we were pulled up against the guardrail with the water rushing around the car. Our groceries were floating around the back seat and as I knew my husband could not

swim, we held hands and said our goodbyes to each other. Before we knew what was happening, someone had backed up to our car with his truck and a man dove under the water with a chain and hooked it to our back bumper and pulled us to safety. We were so thankful and overwhelmed we did not get his name. When we got the car started again we went south to 385 Oakwood Ave., a home of our friends whom we knew would let us dry out and stay the night. Our friend Bill Sloan had a truck and he suggested we go and help out. We drove to Raymore Drive and when we got there the Humber River was huge and houses were floating down the river with people on top screaming for help. The fire-

men were all there and had ropes and were making a human chain to reach the stranded people. I will never forget their cries for help as long as I live. My parents in Maple did not know where we were as all telephone connections were out and we did not get home till Sunday morning making our way up Keele Street. My husband was a milkman at that time and on the Monday morning on his route in Woodbridge he was called upon to help pull people from the swollen waters West of Islington along No.7 Highway. I have spoken at different functions on how I was involved and thank the good Lord I am still here today at almost 81 years to talk about it. Yvonne Rice

our exclusive look

Me to We tour celebrates Bloordale Students hear first-hand how Free the Children is transforming lives in Kenya

TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Thirteen-year-old Kayla Descoteaux has taken the Me to We philosophy to heart. “It’s awesome. You know you can make a difference in people in Kenya’s lives. Things we take for granted, like buying a $50 goat,” which helps a woman overseas financially support her family, said Descoteaux, a Grade 8 student and one of 20 grades 7 and 8s in Bloordale Middle School’s social justice group. Last Friday, Descoteaux and nearly 400 of her Bloordale peers had just heard Me to We’s Year of Empowerment Tour. Me to We is a social change model founded by brothers Craig and Marc Kielburger that helps transform consumers into “socially conscious world changers, one transaction at a time”. Me to We supports Free the Children’s work at home and abroad. Free the Children chose the central Etobicoke school on a leafy street near Renforth and Burnhamthorpe roads as a stop on its tour to thank students for their years-long support. Last year, Bloordale students raised $2,650 in one day to support an education initiative in Ghana. In 2011, Bloordale students raised $8,000 to build a school in Sierra Leone. In 2010, students raised $2,000 for Haitian earthquake victims. “We really try to infuse Me to We in all our programs. I really believe it helps make our students better citizens,” said Cindy Fair, Bloordale’s social justice group staff advisor and character-education teacher with a focus on social justice. A week earlier, 14 of Bloordale’s social justice group students joined 20,000 youth, educators and guests for this year’s inspirational We Day Toronto at the Air Canada Centre. Students

have attended seven of the last eight Toronto We Days. During the hour-long Year of Empowerment talk, Robin Wiszowaty, bestselling author of My Massai Life – from Suburbia to Savannah, and Free the Children’s country director for Kenya and Ghana, shared her experience of living for a year after graduating university with her “adopted” family of 15 in Kenya in a house made of mud, cow dung and sticks. Joan Diana, 15, and Irene Naneu, 17, spoke of how educational and leadership opportunities attending Free the Children’s Oleleshwa All Girls’ Secondary School in Kisaruni, Kenya is transforming their lives. In Kenya, Wiszowaty would walk with her Mama one kilometre twice a day to fill a 20-litre container at a spring, the family’s nearest water source. Water would be used for a daily breakfast

“I saw the reality of water, the reality of drought, the reality of the belief boys do better in school. But I also witnessed some of the most beautiful generosity and warmth. – Robin Wiszowaty, author and Free the Children country director for Kenya and Ghana

of tea, “bucket baths” and clothes washing. After the children ventured on their long walk to school at 6:30 a.m., Wiszowaty and her Mama would use machetes to splinter firewood, then wash the family’s clothes. The routine stretched from 5 a.m. until 10 p.m. every day. “It was chore after chore after chore, day after day after day. That’s how many rural

Africans and rural Kenyans live,” Wiszowaty said. It was when she saw her Kenyan brothers climbing the iconic African acacia trees, and a drought came that forced water conservation, that reality struck her, she said. “What do we do if my brother breaks his leg falling from a tree? There is no ambulance because there is no road. There is only one doctor for every 33,000 rural Kenyans. You often see the ribs sticking out in animals. But when you see ribs sticking out on people, you know the drought is really bad,” Wiszowaty said. Wiszowaty witnessed the juxtaposition of the often harsh reality of rural Kenyan life tempered by Kenyans’ warmth of spirit. “I saw the reality of water, the reality of drought, the reality of the belief boys do better in school. But I also

witnessed some of the most beautiful generosity and warmth,” she said. Diana, a swimming and soccer enthusiast, comes from a family of seven who raise sheep, goats and cows. Her primary education faced challenges: school books destroyed by a leaky roof, hyenas and elephants sometimes imperiled her path to school. She repeated Grade 8 to be accepted for enrolment into Free the Children’s secondary school. “My father was not about to pay my high school education. I was to be married off at 14,” Diana said. “When I got accepted to high school in the Free the Children building, I was so excited I was not able to sleep the whole night. It was the happiest day of my life.” Naneu, an athlete who loves soccer and reading English and history books

in the school library, has a family of five. Her mother is her father’s second wife. Polygamy is common in the culture. Free the Children’s secondary school is igniting her dream of becoming a lawyer to support her community. “I was not able to access education because my parents are not able to pay school fees,” she said. “If they could pay, they’d only pay for the boys,” her two brothers. “They feel only boys do well in school.” Community, cultural values of responsibility and respect, valuing diversity, promoting leadership and encouraging students’ independence are the five pillars of the school’s philosophy, she said. “We are not called students; we are called learners. They are not called teachers; they are education facilitators,” Naneu said. Students then watched a Free the Children Year of Empowerment video: “If you help someone take steps toward empowerment, you’re providing a lifetime of opportunity,” it said. Buying a goat is part of Me to We’s We Create Change project where students and organizations collect toonies toward the $50 needed to provide a woman a goat. Other Me to We campaigns include handmaking rafikis, traditional African beaded necklaces to support Kenyan mamas and hosting bake sales to support families in developing communities and food drives for local food banks. Bloordale students hold a food drive annually, proceeds donated to St. James’ Food Basket. Their global project will soon be decided by a school-wide vote. Free the Children has built more than 650 schools and school rooms and provided clean water, health care and sanitation to one-million people around the globe. he transit advocacy group TTCriders has set its sights on the mayoral race and released a report card grading the transit improvement plans of the main three contenders John Tory, Doug Ford and Olivia Chow. Available via the group’s website, the group rates Ford’s pro-subway platform the lowest, taking to task his city council record, voting for TTC service cuts and supporting fare hikes. Tory also scores poorly for his SmartTrack plan, of which many questions remain unanswered. Of the three candidates, Chow scores the highest, but the group wants more clarity in regards to lower fares and immediate service improvements. You can read the entire report card at www. ttcriders.ca TO REVISIT CYCLING STRATEGY wPROVINCE

The provincial government will soon re-table an Ontario-

One of the trains that will serve the Union Pearson Express air rail link connection between Union Station and Terminal One of Pearson International Airport, was spotted last week on a testing run along the Georgetown South rail corridor. Final safety testing is well underway for the UP service, which is scheduled to open just before next year’s Toronto Pan American Games. A f o u r- s t o p e x p re s s route intended for business

class travel, the service has attracted controversy for the province’s decision to open the line with diesel trains. Metrolinx is expected to announce fare amounts for the service in December. BESTS TORONTO IN SUBWAY wCELLMONTREAL SERVICE A cellphone service went live at five subway stations last week. Not the TTC, where negotiations to introduce underground cellular service have fizzled out, but in Montreal’s STM which announced last year a plan to outfit all of its 68 Metro stations. In Toronto, while wireless internet subway installations appear to going smoothly, it’s been anything but when it comes to negotiations for underground TTC cell service. Bathurst Street undergoing repairs Another major roadwork project will tie up traffic along a busy downtown street for over a month. Starting this week, a joint construction undertaking between the TTC and the city began on Bathurst Street. The work to replace aged sewer watermain and repair streetcar tracks and wiring begins first at the intersection of

Wolseley Street and then at Dundas Street West, which is expected to last until the latter-half of November. During this time parts of Bathurst, from north of Queen Street West to south of Dundas, will be closed to traffic, although local access to homes businesses and Toronto Western Hospital will be maintained, says the TTC.

The project will require replacement buses to service the 511 Bathurst streetcar route until Saturday, Nov. 22. Also beginning Nov. 3, Bathurst and Dundas will close to all traffic. Both the 511 replacement buses and the 505 Dundas streetcar will divert to avoid the intersection.

Philanthropist Eva Pindoff dies ‘We have lost a great humanitarian and friend’ says Canadian Red Cross CEO

Philanthropist and humanitarian Eva Pindoff passed away on Oct. 8 and the Canadian Red Cross is mourning her loss. The Etobian, along with her late husband Kroum Pindoff – founder of Music World Limited and Pinoff Record Sales Limited – was a longtime supporter of the Canadian Red Cross around the world. Over their lifetime, the couple donated more than $20 million to the organization’s work. “...we have lost a great

humanitarian and friend,” said Conrad Sauvé, secretary general and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross, in a statement. “I speak for all of my colleagues at the Canadian Red Cross and many of our sister societies around the world in expressing our sadness, as well as our gratitude for Mrs. Pindoff’s support, which made a difference in the lives of countless people over more than two decades.” The philanthropist couple supported projects

that addressed the needs of women, children and seniors who were affected by war in the former Yugoslavia. They have also channelled several million dollars to Red Cross projects assisting victims of landmines, and to those suffering due to droughts in Africa and projects throughout the Americas and Asia. In 2011, the couple donated $2 million to aid the 12.5 million people impacted by the drought in the Horn of Africa. “I wish I could do more,”

confessed Eva during the cheque presentation. “When I see people suffering like this, I have to do something. I only hope that everyone in Canada and Toronto gives a little bit. Whatever you can give, give.” Although the couple had never been to Africa, Eva said at the time the stark images she saw on TV greatly affected her. “Mothers leaving their children to die – they’re all human beings – they need help,” she said. “They’re just

Upcoming revitalization of park puts a hold on major capital investments, including any pond work: TRCA >>>from page 1 up and weed growth have plagued the Sailing Pond for years – Levick even recalls MMM making presentations to city council about the problem a decade ago – in recent months they reached the “tipping point”. “This year, weed growth was topped off with algae blooms, so even though we’ve spent well over 200 hours this year wading around in the pond and chopping weeds and dragging them out, we realized we weren’t going to succeed by doing it by hand,” he said. The excessive weed growth at the Sailing Pond got so bad this year, in fact, that it forced MMM’s relocation to Douglas Kennedy Park in Mississauga in June, in advance of a national regatta the group was hoping to host at Humber Bay Park East. “It was clear that the weeds were so bad that we had to look for an alternate location, so we moved out there in June and we’re still there,” Levick lamented. “They’ve been very welcoming, but it’s not our ideal site. Our preference would be to stay at Humber Bay pond, because it was designed for sailing radio-controlled boats... that’s why earlier this year, we were trying to get something going with the conservation authority and the city parks department to deal with the weed problem, but we were not very successful.” The park lands at Humber Bay Park East are owned by the TRCA, but managed by the city’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation department. Levick said MMM approached both bodies about partnering up to cost-share the expense of bringing in a big mechanical harvester to chop and pull up weeds in the pond, which he estimated would have cost about $4,500 – a third of which MMM offered to pay themselves. When that request was denied due to a lack of funding, Levick said MMM also offered to foot half the estimated $3,600-bill to have the pond sprayed with an aquatic herbicide. Connie Pinto, TRCA’s manager of special projects – waterfront, confirmed that the conservation authority did pursue the MMM’s aquatic herbicide request, but were ultimately denied due to provincial environment guidelines governing the herbicide’s use. “We were told we were not allowed to use it in the pond,” she said. “The pond is not a pool – it has

aquatic habitat, and therefore it has aquatic species in there.” As for MMM’s future at Humber Bay Park East, Levick and Pinto both confirmed that it will depend on a joint TRCA-City of Toronto revitalization study set to be undertaken for Humber Bay Park in the new year. “The last answer we got was that nothing’s going to happen with the pond, because they’re doing some big master plan and they’re looking at alternate uses of the pond and we’re invited to make a submission,” Levick said. Pinto said the park is, indeed, in much need of revitalization. “What has happened, if you look

at Humber Bay Park East and West, it’s rather tired – and that’s a gentle way to say it,” she said, noting that the nearby Humber Bay Shores area is currently undergoing a rejuvenation project, and that Humber Bay Park is up next. “The intent is that next year the City of Toronto will pursue a Humber Bay Park revitalization and that will be looking at all the park infrastructure from top to bottom, including the ponds and looking at their future use.” That planned revitalization, Pinto added, has put a hold on any major capital investments to be undertaken at the park – including any work on the ponds.

...we’re going to be taking a hard look at what really should be in Humber Bay Park over the next 30 years. – Connie Pinto, TRCA

“We’re going to look at the uses and we’re going to look at the new users – the entire community has changed significantly over 25 years, so we’re going to be taking a hard look at what really should be in Humber Bay Park over the next 30 years,” she said, noting that, as permitted users of the park, MMM members will be invited to the table

when the matter goes to public consultation. “...Certainly the ponds are not untouchable, though. They will be considered along with all the other amenities at the park.” In the meantime, Levick and his fellow MMM members aren’t sure what to think anymore – they simply want to save their pond. “We’re just hoping to end the year looking towards a solution rather than wondering if we should be changing our name to the Mississauga Marine Modellers,” he said. “We don’t want to do that – we’ve been around since 1958.”

Dorothy Ley Hospice hosts speaker series to help parents talk to children about grief CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Parents struggling with how to talk to their children about death and loss are invited to attend Dorothy Ley Hospice’s upcoming Conversations About Grief – a special speaker series featuring acclaimed educator, grief counsellor, nurse and thanatologist Andrea Warnick. Thanatology is the scientific study of death. Sponsored by RBC Financial Group, Dorothy Ley’s Kristine Gagnon said this free series is one that will see Warnick help enable parents to talk openly with their children about the sensitive topics of loss and grief. “She’s going to be specifically talking about how to support children, and this is something that we hear so often that is a great source of anxiety for parents,” the Dorothy Ley bereavement care coordinator said of Warnick, who specializes in ensuring children and youth have access to caring and informed support when experiencing the serious illness, dying or death of someone close to them. “We’re always very mindful of children’s unique needs, but I think people are often a bit afraid that they’re going to say or do something that is maybe going harm their children, and they just don’t know how best to approach what we think are such adult topics.” The first talk in Warnick’s two-part series, Preparing Children: Information for Families Facing an Impending Death, will be held Monday, Oct. 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. and will offer an understanding of children’s needs for information about death; tips on how to support children in being present with a dying loved one; and strategies on

Andrea Warnick

how to break the news of the death. The second talk will follow Monday, Nov. 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. with a focus on Supporting Children: Information for Families Who Have Experienced a Death in the Family. While the death of a significant person can represent a challenging disruption in any child’s emotional existence, when provided with caring and informed support by the adults around them, children who are grieving can still thrive in life. This second talk will explore many of the misconceptions that prevail in society in regards to children and death; approaches caring adults can use to support grieving children; as well as identify some useful resources. Dorothy Ley Hospice’s goal in bringing Warnick to Etobicoke for this special Conversations About Grief speaker series, Gagnon said, is to educate parents and caregivers how best to “meet children where they’re at and give them good, truthful information in age-appropriate (language).” “A lot of people are afraid to have these conversations with their children, so our goal is to give families a bit of information, so that when the day comes – whether it’s

the loss of a grandparent, a friend or even a pet – they’ll be comfortable to have that conversation with their kids,” she said. “It’s so important, because in a lot of respects, early childhood loss becomes a wonderful opportunity for life-skill building. If a child is well supported and given the opportunity to ask their questions and talk – and taught both through the modeling of healthy grieving and also taught some specific strategies of ways that are healthy and helpful to express their feelings – there’s a greater chance that child is going to grow up with better coping skills for all of the losses that life can throw at them.” Both of Warnick’s presentations are open to the general public free of cost, though priority will be given to families with young children who are currently in need of support. In addition, Dorothy Ley Hospice will also be hosting Helping Adolescents Cope with Loss, a professional education workshop in partnership with Bereaved Families of Ontario – Halton Peel on Thursday, Oct. 23. Focusing exclusively on the issues that adolescents face as they cope with loss, this program explores the ways that health-care workers, educators, social workers, counsellors, clergy, hospice clinicians, funeral directors and other professionals can assist those young people in coping with their grief. The full-day session begins at 9 a.m. with a morning webinar broadcast until noon, followed by a workshop lead by Dorothy Ley bereavement volunteers Dana Bingley and Sara Notenboom from 1 to 4 p.m.

Candidates consider the SmartTrack plan, accessibility and transit funding >>>from page 1 Moskalyk fielded a variety of transitrelated questions ranging from their vision of Ward 3’s transit priorities to funding formulas for transit, over the course of the hour-and-a-half debate. A regular transit rider himself, Holyday – son of former deputy mayor and longtime Ward 3 Councillor Doug Holyday – said his two main considerations when it comes to improving transit in Ward 3 are choice and reliability. “I like the idea of choice, because that means if my bus is delayed, I have an alternate route... I can maybe even take an electrified rail,” said Holyday, a manager with Ontario Ministry of Energy, who indicated he is in support of mayoral candidate John Tory’s SmartTrack Line, without mentioning it by name. “We need to pick a lane, so to speak. We’ve flip-flopped on transit for several years now, with start-ups, plans, cancellations, and re-starts. There’s a plan right now that will electrify existing railroads by one of the mayoral candidates, and I think it’s a great idea and it’s something we can start on right now,” he added. “If we can get it implemented, we

can take the pressure off the existing roads and the existing subway system in this town.” As for reliability, Holyday said he doesn’t necessarily think that means the city needs to “dump” more buses on the road – “we just need to get them moving, and on time.” To do so, he suggests the city needs to invest in newer traffic light control technologies to keep the flow of traffic moving. If elected Ward 3 councillor, Fenech, a technical support analyst, said he’d ensure a “policy over politics” approach is taken when it comes to improving transit across the city – particularly in the longneglected areas of Etobicoke that haven’t seen transit upgrades for decades “When you look around the city, we’re talking about the extension up to York University, we’re talking about the Scarborough subway, we’re talking about all these things, but we’re not talking about Etobicoke,” he said. “We need to stop bickering and we need to start planning and building,” he added. “We haven’t had really that many additions to our transit system in the past 30 or 40 years and that’s because everyone’s

been afraid. Kipling was the last stop built in Etobicoke, and that was Nov. 22, 1980.” Fenech said he’d like to see both Metrolinx’s proposal to turn Kipling station into a “mobility hub” – an inter-regional bus terminal to accommodate MiWay and GO Transit buses, as well as TTC buses – and the Eglinton LRT plan given the green light. And he’s also in support of Toronto adopting the PRESTO electronic fare payment system-wide. Finally, Fenech said he’d like to see accessibility improved in Etobicoke’s subway stations: “Islington station is one of last to be retrofitted for full accessibility and that’s (scheduled) for 2025. That’s not really reasonable for an elderly population that’s getting older in Etobicoke,” he said. A professional mediator, Moskalyk said he’d help “build strong partnerships with the province and open a dialogue with the federal government” in order to fund the transit improvements necessary to get Toronto back atop the list of the world’s most livable cities – namely, Tory’s SmartTrack plan. “I support it, because I think it makes sense,” he said of SmartTrack,

RBC Simplified Life Insurance.

noting that the proposed line would create 22 new transit stops – three of them in Etobicoke. “It’s using mostly existing rail, it can be easily implemented, it electrifies, which is good for the environment, and it can easily bypass the BloorDanforth line going from northwest to northeast.” Endorsed by Etobicoke Centre MP Ted Opitz, Moskalyk said he’d also like to see the proposed Eglinton LRT buried underground and the extension of bus routes in certain developed areas of Ward 3 such as the Hwy. 427 corridor, The East Mall, and Markland Wood. More than anything, he added, he just wants to see plans in action. “There seem to have been a lot of starts and stops and false stops. At this point, we need a plan; we need to get shovels in the ground within one calendar year of a new council elected,” Moskalyk said. “Toronto is 17 years behind in its transit, if not two decades. If we want to remain a world-class city, we need to upgrade our transit system...transit means people are going to jobs, and jobs mean a stronger economy. This is absolutely needed.” To fund it all, Moskalyk said Toronto needs to be more like big

American cities in our pursuit of provincial and federal funding. “Currently, we receive 19 per cent subsidies from the provincial government and 1.9 per cent from federal government, but this could be much higher,” he said. “In the US, Washington, D.C. gives regular subsidies for transit to cities like Chicago, New York and Boston, because they see them as economic engines. This is something that is needed for Toronto.” D’Urzo said transit improvements he’d lobby for Ward 3 constituents would include: the implementation of the SmartTrack plan, an extension of the subway to Sherway Gardens, limits to the hours heavy trucks could make deliveries, the creation of HOV lanes on highways, washrooms in all subway stations, and the implementation of the PRESTO payment system. “The Presto card isn’t coming down fast enough,” he said. “We don’t have to invent the wheel – it’s already there, we just have to duplicate it. So let’s go ahead and do it.”

The ideal solution for homeowners in this predicament is to update the kitchen to one that can be enjoyed now and will also attract potential buyers later. Given the choice of materials available today, it is possible to make the changes you desire and to stay within a reasonable budget. Try these ingredients to cook up a kitchen that satisfies today’s and tomor-

row’s needs: Cosmetic re-do or complete overhaul? A cosmetic candidate might be a 50s or 60s kitchen with a functional layout and cabinetry in good condition. In this case, look for ways to update finishes and surfaces to refresh the dated look. Make a list of priorities and choose materials according to a budget. Today, choices abound, you could spend $200 or $2,000 on a sink alone. Your priorities and your budget should dictate your material selections. Shop wisely and where nec-

essary, replace expensive materials with lower-cost look-alikes such as a laminate countertop instead of granite. Update the lighting. A sure-fire way to freshen up a kitchen is to update the lighting. You can show off quality cabinets and increase the light on kitchen working surfaces by replacing central fluorescent fixtures with recessed lighting positioned just out from cabinets. Pendulum fixtures over a kitchen island are also a great update.

What they say... Dear Robert, Roman and I would like to thank you and your team for your guidance and support in our recent housing adventure. The last time that Roman or I had done a real estate transaction was over 20 years ago, so we definitely needed a professional team to help us through the process. Ours was a somewhat complicated situation - sale of a condo in an older building, sale of a townhouse, and purchase of an ideal home, in that order. All parts of the process went smoothly - your practical guidance on getting our homes sale-ready and priced, trusted contractor recommendations, patience in working with (not for) us through the search process, Mary’s attentive handling of viewings and office matters, follow-up and debrief on viewings, and finally, structuring a successful offer for our dream home. You listened to our needs, managed our expectations, and helped us achieve a wonderful outcome. Hopefully we won’t be moving for a while, but if we do, we know who to call! -Cynthea Penman and Roman Zurba

Who is responsible for repairs during a sale?

Stress-test your mortgage Locking in to a mortgage is a tempting commitment since current interest rates are at an all-time low. At the same time, however, experts are cautioning homeowners: Can you still afford your mortgage if rates were to rise? Stress-testing this major loan is a smart way for home buyers to prepare for the future in the event that mortgage rates go up. Before locking in to it, home owners are advised to calculate their mortgage payments at a higher rate to see how much they would pay if the rates were to rise in the future. When homeowners stress test their mortgage at different rates, they have a better understanding of what they can and can’t afford. It’s a simple and quick test that can save you from future stress and worry. Try the following tips to help you stress-test your mortgage: •Test at 1 to 2 per cent higher than your current rate: Financial advisors recommend stress testing your mortgage at 1 to 2 per cent higher

than your current rate. Many financial institutions offer online mortgage calculators that are designed to help calculate your mortgage at different rates. • Not just for first-time homeowners: Stress-testing your mortgage isn’t just limited to first-time homebuyers. Current homeowners who are looking to renew their mortgages can benefit from this exercise too. While you can’t predict the future, you can at least prepare for it. This is a better-safe-than-sorry approach to ensure you can comfortably afford your home now and ten years from now. • Double check your results with a mortgage specialist: Mortgage specialists are well versed in the financial implications associated with home ownership and can help you stress-test your mortgage but also help find ways to pay down your mortgage faster.

Many questions arise during the homebuying process. Buyers looking at homes that require a good deal of TLC may wonder who is responsible for the home’s repairs. Depending on the situation, there is no clear-cut answer. There is no perfect home, and things that are acceptable to the current owner may not be acceptable to the buyer who is looking to become the next owner. The home-buying process is typically a careful cooperation between buyer and seller to find a middle ground. The buyer may have to make some concessions, as will the seller. Ultimately, it is this cooperation that often determines if the sale goes through or is terminated. Before any negotiations can begin regarding repairs, it is advisable for a buyer to have an independent inspector come out and look over the home and property. Most real estate agents will suggest this be done as a first priority -- even before a contract is entered on the home. An inspection will unveil any potential problems in a home and indicate things that the buyer may not be aware of, including items that do not meet with code or could be unsafe. An inspector also may point out problems that could cause a mortgage lender to give pause. This may mean the lender will deem problems unsafe and refuse to fund the mortgage until repairs are made. A copy of this inspection report should be sent to the home seller to review with his or her attorney and real estate agent. The buyer working with his own real estate attorney and agent can petition for certain repairs to be made. Many sellers will make such repairs to ensure the purchase goes through, or they will accept a lower purchase price to compensate for

sponsibility of the seller. If these repairs are not made, a buyer should think strongly about walking away from the deal. Such repairs include: • lender-required repairs that could impact home safety • leaky pipes • water penetration issues, including a bad roof • unsafe decking or handrails • wet basements or crawl spaces • insecure foundations or obvious structural damage • poorly functioning sewer lines or septic system It is always advisable for buyers to speak with a reliable real estate attorney and a trusted real estate agent to guide them through the process of buying a home. the needed repairs, which the buyer will then make. Buyers might want to hire a good real estate attorney to write clauses into the contract to protect their interests. This allows the buyer to forfeit the sale and walk away from the contract should an issue arise. The rules often change when buying a home that is a short sale or in foreclosure. A home that is in distress is typically in this situation because the current owners cannot afford to pay their mortgage, and thusly, are not able to afford repairs. Buyers may try to negotiate repairs with the seller, but they shouldn’t assume that sellers are responsible for the repairs. Generally speaking, most short sales are sold “as is” and may even specify that repairs are the buyer’s responsibility. A buyer also can ask to have the home price reduced to cover the repairs. Buyers should know that, for a home that is not in foreclosure, there are some repairs that should ultimately be the re-

tobicoke war veteran Joseph Chiasson is turning 95 and is still active helping others in the community after years of service abroad with the Canadian Armed Forces. Chiasson, whose birthday is on Oct. 22, was stationed in Europe as a shoe repairer for the 2nd Division of the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War. He was one of 12 cobblers assembled to form a Boot Repair Company to service Canadian troops fighting Adolf Hitler in Europe from 1939 to 1945. The Canadian army was forced to start mending the boots of its troops after a British firm could not meet the demand for repairs. Some 1.1 million Canadian men and women served in the Second World War. The company worked from a hangar at the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps, near London. The Lameque, N.B., native, who reached the rank of corporal, escaped front-line duty because he had gained experience in shoe repair at his uncle’s shop before enlisting. “The company started out with 12 of us and it expanded to 150 men,” Chiasson recalled. “We were repairing anywhere from 400 to 900 pairs of shoes a day.” He said the sturdy Canadian-made leather boots were a necessity for soldiers who were marching all day in the battlefield. “Boots were very important for the troops because they were always on the move,” Chiasson said. “No one could move or transfer us from the company because our work was so vital.” He said the mended

Joseph Chiasson displays some of the tote bags he makes for charity. He also makes quilts for the Salvation Army. The Etobicoke war veteran turns 95 on Oct. 22.

boots were returned within 24-hours to the troops, many who were advancing against Hitler on the front lines. “All the boots were tagged when we got them and most of our work was to replace souls and heels,” Chiasson said. “It was not hard work but it was very repetitive.” He was paid $2 daily; with half of his wages going to help his family. Chiasson sewed his last boot in 1946, when he left the army and returned home. He then left for Lewes, England, where he spent 18 years operating a shoe repair business. He came to visit his brother in Etobicoke in 1964 and fell in love with the place. “We love Etobicoke

because of the community,” said the father of four girls. “I am involved in different charities to help others in the community.” Chiasson then worked in the traffic department at the city of Etobicoke, where he installed signs on city streets. “At one time I knew every street in Etobicoke because I had installed signs on all of them,” he chuckled. “It took us a month to install all the signs at Sherway Gardens when that opened up.” Today he sews quilts and tote bags that he gives to friends and the Salvation Army to distribute to the homeless. His sewing room is filled with supplies, bolts of cloth, fabric and bags with quilts ready for delivery as gifts for Christmas. Chiasson’s wife, Vi, who is 80, said the homemade quilts and bags make people happy. “His quilts keep a lot of deserving people warm in the winter,” Vi said.

Police investigators were unable to turn up any new clues in the 1985 disappearance of eight-year-old Nicole Morin during a twoday search of a rural property north of Barrie last week. Ontario Provincial Police and Toronto police dispatched about 40 officers and two cadaver dogs to conduct a ground search of a heavily wooded property spanning 100 acres near Horseshoe Valley and Old Second roads in Springwater Township last Wednesday. Det. Sgt. Madelaine Tretter of 22 Division said last week the renewed search efforts were sparked by a recent tip to re-inspect the area, which mirrored a similar request police received shortly after Morin went missing from her Etobicoke apartment building back on July 30, 1985. “Basically, the OPP received some information approximately 29 years ago to a location near their Springwater detachment. They responded to the call, and acting on the information they had at that time, cleared it,” said Tretter, declining to comment on the nature of that original

report. “We recently received some information from a citizen asking us to take another look at it, so we’ve met with OPP and we’ve consulted with them and asked them to take another look and do a search of the area, which they’ve agreed to do.” That search, Toronto police Insp. Gerry Cashman said late last week, came up empty, despite the use of GPS systems and ground-penetrating radar. “We’ve done as thorough a job as we could possibly do searching for evidence and we’ve come up with nothing conclusive,” he said. “Does that mean we were 100 per cent perfect and couldn’t have missed anything? No.” Cashman said the area searched consisted of a private property, characterized by plenty of trees, open clearings, paths, deep embankments, water, “steep drops,” prickly bushes and raspberry plants, and containing a metal-sided shed and another structure that “looks like a cabin that may have been used at some point.” No one currently lives on the land, he added. At this point, Cashman said police don’t intend to search any other areas in connection with Morin’s case, but that doesn’t mean they’ve given up on it. “Sadly, the investigation goes on. We are still searching

for missing Nicole Morin,” he said. “We are hoping this will generate more leads and people calling. We have no more concrete leads to follow up on right now.” Morin was last seen leaving her family’s apartment unit at 627 The West Mall at around 11 a.m. on that Tuesday morning more than 29 years ago, as she said goodbye to her mother on her way down to the building’s lobby to meet a friend. From there the pair was supposed to head to the outdoor pool for a morning of swimming, but Nicole never arrived and hasn’t been seen since. Toronto Crime Stoppers co-ordinator Chris Scherk said in an earlier interview that there are a number of avenues investigators can and do explore when it comes to solving cold cases such as Morin’s. “Witnesses may remember something they saw that can assist investigators, but also, criminals talk. They brag and they confess,” he said. “...Someone out there may know what happened to Nicole Morin in 1985 and for whatever reason feels like they can’t come forward. With Crime Stoppers, you can.” - with files, Torstar News Service Anyone with information about Morin’s disappearance is asked to contact police at 416-808-2200, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477)

Police seek more ‘persons of interest’ in last week’s double-shooting homicide TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Homicide detectives are seeking three additional “persons of interest” in last week’s fatal shooting of Zaid Athir Youssef, 17, and Michael Menjivar, 15. Last Monday, Toronto police responded to the sound of gunfire outside the School of Experiential Education, 40 McArthur St., one block east of Islington Avenue and Dixon Road. Officers found two teens suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite CPR, Youssef and Menjivar died of their injuries. Youssef was a Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School student. Menjivar was a James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School student. Both were shot to death around 1:35 p.m. Oct. 6. Police released security camera images of two persons of interest on Sunday.

On Monday, police issued an image of another person of interest. Anyone who witnessed the shooting, who can identify the persons of interest on the security camera images or the persons of interest themselves is urged to contact investigating homicide Det.-Sgt. Peter Trimble at 416-808-7400 ext. 77394. Last Wednesday, police released photos of five other persons of interest in the case. Four of those images have been removed from online as it was determined they were

under-age youth. School of Experiential Education was placed in lockdown for a number of hours following the shooting. Five area schools – Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School, St. Maurice Catholic School, Kingsview Village Junior School and Valleyfield Junior School – were in hold and secure Oct. 6 in the hours immediately after the shooting as police scoured the area.

Not only has the Etobicoke Dolphins ‘Pink the Rink’ girls hockey tournament, on tap Oct. 17 to 19, grown to be one of the city’s biggest, it also raises money – and awareness – in the fight against breast cancer. Last year, more than $10,000 was handed over to the Canadian Breast Cancer Support Fund. This year, the tournament is even bigger with the number of teams signed up to play surpassing 200. A dozen mostly west-end arenas will be used including the MasterCard Centre as the home venue along with a second tournament centre added this year at the four-pad Canlan Ice Sports Etobicoke. Adding to the excitement will be the kick-off of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) Saturday night at 8 p.m. at the MasterCard Centre with last season’s playoff (Clarkson Cup) champion Toronto Furies hosting the Calgary Inferno.

The top women’s hockey league in the world features plenty of Olympians, including, on the Toronto Furies, national team player Natalie Spooner who in the off-season took part in the popular Amazing Race Canada series along with fellow Olympian Meaghan Mikkelson. The pair came in second. Also on the team are former national team members (and Olympians) defenceman Tessa Bonhomme (who won the Battle of the Blades reality figure skating show in 2011 and is now a TSN sportscaster), goaltender Sami Jo Small and American Olympian (and second overall draft pick) Megan Bozek. Junior team in action Also in action at the MasterCard Centre during the tournament will be the Dolphins junior team, which plays in the 20-team Provincial Women’s Hockey League – the top junior league in Ontario. They play Thursday, Oct. 16 at 8:15 p.m. against Oakville and again on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 2:15 p.m., against Aurora. The Pink the Rink tournament will feature players, in its elite divisions, who will likely one day become Olympians. But while the tournament features the best in girls hockey – with some teams coming in from U.S. hockey hotbeds in Detroit, Chicago and Marlborough, Massachusetts, it is also very much an inclusive tournament with half a dozen competitive levels from the top double A level down to C. The age ranges from novice to intermediate. Popular events will be back including the Best Pinked-Out Team; the Pink Puck Toss; plus, many other events at the host arenas.

Sherway Gardens $500M transformation well underway On Nov 1, Sherway Gardens will begin construction on the much anticipated Saks Fifth Avenue store. This is just one of 50 new stores — and three new restaurants —the $500 million renovation will encompass to reinforce their position as a leading fashion destination. The Sherway Gardens expansion broke ground in early 2013. This past summer a new three-level parking garage opened, adding 1200 new spaces. Now more shoppers can visit and see the unique shopping experience the centre has to offer. With this renovation, Cadillac Fairview will redefine Sherway Gardens as a super regional shopping centre. When the renovation is complete, there will be two more additional parking garages. The next phase of the expansion, the north end of the centre, will be open for business in September 2015. The north expansion will encompass a 900-seat food court, the new Sporting Life location and a new 23,000 square foot Harry Rosen flagship store. The roof of the north expansion will include a 65,000 square foot green roof, which benefit the city and the environment.

Shoppers can expect a beautiful and quality designed building. The project architect, Dialog, is behind buildings like Shangri-La, and the 145 King Street West Retail Concourse. Sherway Gardens project interior designer GH+A is also responsible for the Toronto Eaton Centre Urban Eatery, Fairview, and the Times Square Aeropostale in New York City. The final phase of the expansion, which includes Nordstrom, is expected to be completed in 2017.

TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Major League Baseball phenom Joey Votto, veteran sports journalist Bob Weeks, two-time Stanley Cup champion Mike Walton and longtime West Mall Lightning and Toronto Marlboros coach Dan Brown are the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame’s 2014 inductees. The venerable hall is a beacon to Etobicoke youth to encourage and inspire excellence in all fields of athletics in the community. This year the hall celebrates its 21st anniversary. Votto is first baseman for the Cincinnati Reds. In 2010, he won National League MVP Award, the National League Hank Aaron Award, and the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s athlete of the year. Weeks is editorial director of SCOREGolf magazine and hosts SCOREGolf TV and SCOREGolf radio, where he has worked for 27 years. He has been a golf analyst for TSN for 18 years. He was The Globe and Mail’s curling columnist for more than 25 years, and editor of the Ontario Curling Report for 30 years. Weeks’ first article was a report of a Richview Collegiate football game when he was a student there published in The Etobicoke Guardian. Walton won the Stanley Cup with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1967. He was the club’s leading scorer in 1967-68 with 59 points (30 goals, 29 assists) in his first full season with the Leafs. Later, he fit in well with the Boston Bruins’ prolific

scorers led by Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr. He won a second Stanley Cup with the defending cup champion Bruins in 1972. “Hockey has been a way of life for me for a long time,” Walton said. “It has its ups and downs like anything. But it has been pretty good to me. I’ve had great experiences and met a lot of great people.” Today, Walton is a RE/ MAX real estate broker who buys and resells homes in Etobicoke. “I bought my first house in Etobicoke for $50,000 in 1967-68,” he recalled. “I sold it two years later when I went to Boston for $52,000. It sold the other day for $1.2 million. I’ve lived in Etobicoke most of my adult life. It’s close to downtown ... the schools are great. It’s a great community.” Meanwhile, Brown ducked into a MasterCard arena to see his son, Connor, a prospect with the Leafs currently

playing with their American Hockey League affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. Brown was a late starter to Canada’s national sport. He played from age 10 to 16 with the West Mall house league, the then Etobicoke Hockey Association rep league at Michael Power Catholic High School. The Winnipeg Jets drafted him, and he played in Europe. In 1983-85, he was the leading scorer for the Fife Flyers in Scotland. He started his sons Jeff and Connor in hockey young. He became the West Mall Lightning coach in 1994. Both sons went on to play with the Toronto Marlboros of the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL), where Brown has coached for many years. Je f f p l a ye d w i t h t h e Oshawa Generals and now at University of Toronto. This year, the hall has launched a Legends category to honour athletes, builders and media who were not recognized decades ago, some posthumously. Legends inducted posthumously include: • Turk Broda, a Leafs goalie for his entire NHL career and minor league and junior hockey coach; • Ben Kern, who developed Junior Golf Canada and was one of Canada’s leading golf instructors; • and Annis Stukus, who led the Toronto Argonauts to Grey Cup victories in 1937 and 1938.

Mountaineers help Ontario to national midget field lacrosse title Keaton Thomson, Daniel Balawejder and Sam Rowe get credit for helping team with the win Ontario’s recent championship win at the midget national field lacrosse championships in Edmonton was helped, in no small part, by three players from the Mimico Mountaineers. The tr io included Keaton Thomson and defenders Daniel Balawejder and Sam Rowe. Thomson ended up ninth in scoring in the tournament – and fifth on

his high flying team – with 10 goals and three assists. “Keaton is a player who can put the ball in the net at key times and was a definite playmaker at the Nationals,” said Ontario coach Joe Hiltz, in an email interview. “He played a key role on our power play and someone I had full confidence in.” Thomson’s older brother (by two

years), Tanner, the Ontario Lacrosse Association’s minor field lacrosse ‘Offensive Player of the Year’ for 2012, has won two national championships with Ontario at the youth level. He’s now embarking on a full lacrosse scholarship at Marquette University. Hiltz, meanwhile, ter med Balawejder as “the best defensive

player in the tournament playing like a man amongst boys. He dominated the field in every game. When challenged by opponents he took the ball away with ease.” especially proud Rowe, he termed “a solid defensive player who always does what is asked of him and plays with a lot

of heart and commitment.” The Ontario team, as a whole, he said, “played throughout the tournament with tremendous sportsmanship, dedication and a humbleness that made me especially proud.” Ontario won all six games at the tournament, including the championship game 12-4 over British Columbia.

HOLY SPIRIT, Thou make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who will give the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory, Amen. Person must pray this 3 consecutive days without stating one’s wish.
