Kevin Brooks has delivered more than 1,000 presentations across Canada and the U.S., sharing his story of drinking and driving.

ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Every morning Kevin Brooks wakes up, there’s a wheelchair beside him that reminds him of his “nightmare”: killing his friend in a drunk driving crash. It began as a typical warm Saturday in June 2000. Brooks, then 21, was hanging out with his high school sweetheart and watched her ride in a horse show. He then went to

his youngest sister’s ballet recital. After the event, Brooks attended a house party where he thought he’d have a few beers and then call it a night. But that never happened. “I ran into some old school hockey friends I’d grown up with, and one thing led to another, and we were down to have a wild night,” Brooks said. And they hopped from one party to another. At one point during the night, Brooks

returned home to get more beer. The British Columbia resident wasn’t yet “blackout drunk” and stopped in front of his car thinking something bad could happen. “We all have that voice inside that warns us at times,” Brooks said. “That was one moment where I was still consciously aware of what was going on and had that opportunity to make the better choice and chose not to.” Brushing off the warning, Brooks con>>>a mistake, page 8

When her art studio was commissioned to design and create a series of iconic art installations to display at Canada Olympic House during this summer’s Rio Games, Deborah Moss knew she wanted to share the ‘oncein-a-lifetime’ experience with young artists. “What I really love about the Olympic project is that it’s for everyone. I mean, how often do we, as artists, get to do something this public and this meaningful?” Moss, cofounder of Junction-based art studio Moss & Lam, said of her decision to include Etobicoke School of the Arts (ESA) in the project. “I thought if we could invite students to lend a hand, they could see how art impacts people and how artists can contribute to the world.” That idea culminated with the ESA students’ one-day visit in mid-March to the Moss & Lam headquarters near Dundas and Keele. There, they spent hours painting Canadian Tire>>>canada, page 10

Plans to refurbish 1959 Oculus sparks preservation petition TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com A city-planned refurbishment of a long-neglected 1959 Modernist pavilion in South Humber Park is the subject of a change.org petition, as well some misinformation circulating online, says the area city councillor. The Oculus, as it is known, is a sculptural pavilion with a domed roof and two columns fronting a curved stone wall concealing two public washrooms in the park north of The Queensway between Stephen Drive and the Humber River behind the Humber Treatment Plant. The Architectural Conservancy of Ontario (ACO) launched an online petition arguing the city’s planned refurbishment “will negatively alter portions of the structure.” ACO’s petition responded to plans published in area Councillor Justin Di Ciano’s July e-newsletter stating the washrooms would be demolished and “wrapping the existing steel posts with architectural stone cladding is also planned.”

Dan Pearce/MetrolanD

Oculus is a Modernist pavilion built in 1959 in South Humber Park. Architectural Conservancy Ontario launched an online petition arguing a planned city refurbishment of it would negatively alter the structure.

The petition at bit.ly/oculussave has nearly 600 supporters with a goal of 1,000, at which point it will be sent to Di Ciano and to Mary MacDonald,

senior manager with the city’s heritage preservation services. The Oculus is on ACO Toronto’s list of at-risk buildings.

ACO (Toronto) did not respond to The Guardian’s requests for comment. Robert Ruggiero, a member of the Etobicoke York Community Preservation Panel, attributes the Oculus to architect Alan Crossley. Di Ciano called the Oculus “very cool” and a “Back to the Future-style structure.” The city’s goal is to fix the Oculus and to restore it, he said. Cladding the poles in stone is not planned, Di Ciano clarified. “Parks originally had a document from the past in which one suggestion was to clad the poles. We have no intention of cladding the poles,” Di Ciano said in an interview. The Oculus’ washrooms have been closed for years following community complaints about prostitution and other illicit activity, including drugs use, Di Ciano said. “There will never be an operating bathroom in that park. It is such a secluded area,” he said. “We’re working with city parks and heritage to identify the prob-

lems, and to find a middle ground and preserve what Crossley was able to build in 1959. We’ll look at the washroom, whether we preserve a wall or half the wall or save the bricks.” An aerial view also shows three “massive” holes in the roof, he added. Importantly, one goal of the Oculus’ refurbishment is to locate a decades-long missing statue of three birds, which had been a central focus of the structure. Sunlight would shine through a hole in the dome onto the statue. Di Ciano is requesting the bird sculpture’s return, or information leading to its return, with no questions asked. “Someone must know where it is. It must be in someone’s home or office. Let us know if you have any information. No questions asked. We’re going to be very nice about it.”

Kirsty Duncan announces $98M for U of T lab upgrades Help kids get The federal Liberals joined their Ontario counterparts last Thursday to invest nearly $100 million into University of Toronto research labs in support of Ottawa’s innovation agenda. The $98-million investment is the first funding from the new $2-billion Post-Secondary Institutions’ Strategic Investment Fund that was announced in the federal Liberals’ spring budget to modernize research facilities on Canadian campuses. The funding will support the Lab Innovation for Toronto (LIFT) project to improve 546 labs across the university’s three campuses, according to a news release. Ottawa is contributing $83.7 million; Queen’s Park is granting $14.3 million. The University of Toronto will contribute an additional $91.8 million for a total investment of $189.8 million. Navdeep Bains, the minister of

innovation, science and economic development, and Science Minister Kirsty Duncan, Etobicoke North MP, announced the new spending July 30 at the university’s downtown campus. Deb Matthews, O n t a r i o’s m i n i s t e r o f advanced education and skills development, and Reza Moridi, minister of research, innovation and science, joined Bains and Duncan. The investment was given as an example of the government’s aim to create jobs and drive growth across all industries, a government news release stated. Bains called the government’s agenda a “once-in-a-generation” investment to make Canada a global centre for innovation. “That means making Canada a world leader in turning ideas into

solutions, science into technologies, skills into jobs and start-up companies into global successes,” Bains said in a statement. “This investment will create conditions that are conducive to innovation and long-term growth, which will in turn keep the Canadian economy globally competitive.” Duncan said the investments will help make Canada a “global leader in scientific excellence.” “Encouraging scientific awareness in Ontario and across Canada depends on supporting our worldclass scientists and researchers,” Duncan said in a statement. “Through investments such as those under the Strategic Infrastructure Fund, we are strengthening the foundation for building Canada as a global leader in scientific excellence.”

University of Toronto president Meric Gertler thanked the federal and Ontario governments for the investments and for “their leadership in ensuring Canada secures its place among global leaders in science and technology.” “The LIFT project will equip our brilliant scholars, students and staff with the cutting-edge facilities they need to learn, collaborate and discover,” Gertler said in a statement. Ontario universities and colleges will receive more than $1.9 billion from the federal and provincial governments, the academic institutions themselves and private donors. “As a result of these investments, students, teachers and researchers will work in state-of-the-art facilities that advance the country’s best research,” the news release stated. ~Tamara Shephard

school supplies Staples has teamed up with the Etobicoke Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club for its 11th annual school supply drive. Taking place from now until Sept. 13, the goal of the national drive is to raise $1.7 million in donations of school supplies and monetary gifts for students in need. All funds and products collected during the drive here in Etobicoke will be handed over to the Etobicoke Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club “to help children have the best possible start to the school year and ensure they have all the supplies they need.” In 11 years, the drive has generated millions of dollars for schools, nonprofits and community groups.

Remaining vigilant against impaired driving

I

t’s sad we still have to warn people about the dangers of impaired driving; one would have hoped the message had been received loud and clear by now, but that is unfortunately not the case. In today’s editions of our papers, we look at the consequences of impaired driving, from the standpoint of a woman whose life was forever altered after being struck by a driver who was impaired, and from the perspective of a young man who killed one of his best friends after crashing a car while driving drunk. These are tragic stories, and in both cases they could have been avoided. We ask all our readers to think hard about the toll impaired driving can take on the lives of so many people and to make sure they take the necessary steps to avoid such tragedies. We can’t emphasize enough the importance of not driving impaired – be it from alcohol, prescription drugs or marijuana. It’s critical for all to remember OuR ViEW that alcohol is not the only cause of impaired driving. Be responsible As our stories show, there’s concern among police before getting growing about what impact Canada’s behind wheel new marijuana laws will have on impaired driving. Police are preparing for a spike in drivers “one toke over the line”, and the Ontario Provincial Police are training officers to specifically detect drugimpaired drivers. While police admit that it will remain to be seen whether drug-impaired driving increases in Canada, evidence from the state of Colorado (where marijuana is legal) indicates one in eight of its impaired driving citations in 2014 involved pot use. Clearly, as the federal government moves toward relaxing Canada’s marijuana-use laws it will have to take into account how drug-impaired driving is determined by police, and what standards the courts will be setting for criminal charges. It is critical that the message gets out that drugimpaired driving is as socially and morally unacceptable as drunk driving. Further complicating the dangers on our roads is the “grey” area of those driving (often unknowingly) under the influence of prescription drugs. Patients and doctors must improve their level of understanding about the impact of prescription drugs and medications on the ability of a person to drive, and make sure that information is available. We all need to take a greater level of responsibility about our actions, and the decisions we make, before we get behind the wheel of a vehicle. newsroom ph:

Bloor bike lanes address city’s growing cycling needs I’m usually pretty careful riding a bike on Toronto streets, but last week I had a near thing. Riding down Coxwell Avenue on my way to a Mayor John Tory press event, I thought I could make it past some road work that pushed very close to streetcar tracks, and as it turned out, I couldn’t, not quite. So when the front tire slipped into the streetcar track, it went over and I nearly did too; somehow managing to get off the bike without really falling myself. Lucky me. Seriously. Lucky me. In July, a study by Ryerson University and the University of British Columbia on bike accidents in Toronto found that fully a third of the serious ones were caused by cyclist’s tires either getting caught in the tracks or slipping across them. Usually, there were no

david nickle the city bike lanes and the cyclists reported trying to maneuver around parked cars or other obstacles. And it happens a lot. Between 2005 and 2014, the city has charted 1,232 cyclist collisions – a number that doesn’t include simple mishaps. The whole thing adds a bit of perspective to the new pilot project that got underway this week to try out separated bike lanes on Bloor Street. There are no streetcar tracks on Bloor Street, but there are an awful lot of cars, and the stretch through the Annex is a well-documented hazard for cyclists trying to get across town. It’s been a pain for auto drivers, during this relatively short construction period, with two of the four lanes of traffic there

shut down, and there will probably be some more pain – or at least mild discomfort – as the pilot runs its course. Drivers are going to have to get used to it, because the status quo is a precarious place right now. More people are choosing to bike to and from work than ever. And while the city has provided some good cycling infrastructure – a total of 558.4 kilometres of on-street bike lanes, before the Bloor project is counted – Toronto also has 82 kilometres of those tirecatching streetcar tracks to contend with. Cycling is safer in Toronto, but it’s hardly as safe as it might be. The authors of the study that appeared in the BMC Public Health journal in July had a couple of recommendations short of getting rid of all those streetcar tracks. Bike lanes, obviously, are crucial – but they also rec-

ommend fully-separated streetcar tracks, like those on Spadina or St. Clair. The city can do other things, too. Simply patching potholes on well-cycled routes – or all routes, for that matter – would go a long way to making a safer, smoother commute for cyclists. Providing more places to safely lock bikes might not make things safer, but might be more effective. But in the short term, running a successful pilot project along one of the great, city-spanning streets, and working diligently to build out the bike plan that Toronto Council approved earlier in the summer, is an excellent step toward syncing the city’s form with the needs of a growing number of its residents.

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

Above, Kevin Brooks’ crumpled car after the crash that killed his friend and left him paralyzed; Brooks standing with his two sisters at his sister Allison’s graduation. Right, this was taken the night before the car crash - June 23, 2000 and was the last photo ever taken of Brooks standing with his family.

2015: Alcohol: 5,373 Drug: 195

A mistake that lingers, more than 16 years later >>>from page 1 tinued drinking and partying hard. “By the time we were leaving the last house party, we were all really drunk,” said Brooks. “We were double digit drinks for sure. I’d say well over 10, probably pushing 20.” Three of Brooks’ buddies got in a cab, but before it left, one friend, Brendon, got out and opted to travel with Brooks. “I was like the stubborn idiot who wanted to drive drunk,” Brooks said. “From what I’ve heard, people were trying to get my keys away from me, but I had an extra pair in the glove box. ... In hindsight, too bad somebody didn’t just punch me out.” Brooks and Brendon were speeding to another party. “Going 110 to 130 in a 70 zone, just stupid. Beers are open, tunes cranked, totally not paying attention,” Brooks said. “I don’t remember what happened. I missed a corner, and the car hit a road divider and went airborne, hit the ground and rolled multiple times.” Weeks later, Brooks woke up in an intensive care unit and learned that he had been in a crash and that he was paralyzed from the chest down. “A little bit later, I asked about who was

with me and found out my buddy Brendon passed away. That was the worst thing I’d ever heard in my life,” Brooks said. “He’s gone and dealing with that was a nightmare.” Brooks contemplated suicide but was confined to a bed, too weak to even move. With the support of his family, best friend and Brendon’s family, Brooks’ outlook began to change. “It allowed me a chance not to totally give up,” he said of the support. After a two-month hospital stay, Brooks was transferred to a rehabilitation centre where he learned to dress himself, roll over in bed, sit up and get around in a wheelchair. It was a new life for Brooks, who had been an active man. “I could play every sport decently. I skateboarded, I snowboarded, I played hockey. I was just go, go, go, and then all of a sudden, boom, I’m in a chair.” His future career as an electrician was over, his girlfriend of two-and-a-half years left him and he faced criminal charges from the crash. “And dealing with the fact that I killed a buddy, there was so much to deal with,” he said.

2016 (to date): Alcohol: 2,147 Drug: 81

Brooks pled guilty to dangerous driving causing death; a charge of impaired driving causing death was dropped. “I lost my licence for three years. There were community hours and probation but no jail time,” Brooks said. “I still look at it as light.” Brooks said he felt something good had to come from the tragedy, and about two years after the collision, he began sharing his story at schools in the hopes of preventing drinking and driving. “I used to be a server and I’d be scared if I had 10 people at a table, so getting in front of an entire gymnasium of teenagers was terrifying, but once I started talking, I just sunk into a bit of a groove,” he said. “Then after, I was just mobbed by kids and they were crying, thanking me and shaking my hand. There was a connection made.” Brooks has now delivered more than 1,000 presentations across Canada and the U.S. “It’s been a saving grace for me to have a positive outlet for what happened,” he said. “I can’t say I’m proud of the journey that led me on it, but I found it and I just keep looking forward.”

At left, Etobicoke School of the Arts students visited Junction-based Moss & Lam art studio for a day in March, during which they worked on a couple of large-scale art installations set to be on display at Canada Olympic House during this summer’s 2016 Rio Games. At right, a rendering shows the Canada Olympic House at Rio 2016.

Canada Olympic House design was a collaborative effort >>>from page 1 donated canoe paddles and cutting and gluing thousands of strips of red and white material for what would become two signature art installations at Canada Olympic House – including a giant Canadian flag designed as the focal point of Team Canada’s Celebration Room. The whole experience – including a visit from Canadian Olympic cyclist Hugo Barrette – was captured on video at bit.ly/2b2nQGm “To know that the athletes’ eyes are going to be on the work that

we’re doing, that it’ll be part of their experience and part of the memories that they’re going to have for the rest of their lives, it’s incredibly meaningful for us,” Matthew Varey, head of the visual arts program at ESA, said in the video. In addition to the ESA students’ one-day contribution to the Canada Olympic House projects, Moss said she had a team of eight dedicated artists working on the large-scale installations for nearly a month straight in order to meet the tight deadline.

The finished materials were then shipped out to Canada Olympic House’s headquarters in Rio de Janeiro in April, where just last week a team of Moss & Lam artists flew out to supervise their installation in advance of athletes’ arrival for the 2016 Rio Games. “It’s looking fantastic. I was getting goosebumps just looking at the photos they brought back,” Moss said. “I think it represents the pride we have in the athletes and in our country.” For his part, Barrette – who’s

slated to compete in the men’s keirin track cycling event – said he’s looking forward to enjoying the fruits of the ESA and Moss & Lam artists’ labours when he gets to visit Canada Olympic House later this month. “When you’re in Canada House as an athlete, you’re at home,” he said in the video capturing his March visit to Moss & Lam’s art studio. “When I see all that work that is being done right now to improve Canada House, but also involving young kids in this project, I think

When I see all that work that is being done right now to improve Canada house, but also involving young kids in this project, I think it’s inspiring. – Hugo Barrette, Canadian Olympic cyclist

it’s inspiring...We’re definitely going to have the best athletes’ house in the world.”

Good hearing but trouble with conversation? This improvement in hearing can be achieved for some clients through the new Phonak Audéo V’s hearing aids. This cutting-edge hearing technology comes in a miniature casing that can significantly enhance the user’s ability to hear speech in company. The hearing aids attune to the person you are speaking to and can also recognize if ambient noise increases in the background.

A lot of people have trouble catching what people say, especially in group situations, despite having good hearing. What a lot of people don’t know is that this may be caused by damage to the so-called motor or amplifier function of special cells in the ear. A new type of hearing aid can help balance this out. A great many people have difficulty hearing others clearly on a daily basis. Bad acoustics, unclear pronunciation, background noise and music often make it challenging to catch what people say. This results in them having to repeatedly ask questions, straining to hear and perhaps increasingly avoiding discussions in large groups. As mentioned earlier, this may be caused by malfunctions in special cells in the ear. According to a theory proposed by hearing researchers, “motor cells” are a type of hair cell responsible for amplifying quiet sounds. They vibrate up to 20,000 times per second. If these hair cells do not work properly then quiet sounds are no longer naturally

Hair cells in the ear move very rapidly and can act as an amplifier or dampener. If these cells are damaged, they can no longer properly amplify speech and dampen loud noises. amplified in the ear and loud sounds no longer dampened. This leads to more difficulty in hearing what is said in a lot of situations. If the hair cells have been damaged by noise or blood circulation problems, hearing aids that amplify quiet speech and dampen loud ambient noise can be a good solution for most people.

Connect Hearing is currently looking to improve hearing for people who experience these challenges and want to try this new technology. We are particularly interested in candidates who have trouble hearing speech in the situations discussed above and can benefit from a trial to see whether they notice an improvement. Interested people can register for a free hearing evaluation and a no-obligation trial of the Audéo V hearing aids by calling 1.888.408.7377.

Celebrate summer’s sweeter side with local berries antioxidants and high in flavour. Whether blueberries, strawberries, raspberries or prairie berries are your berry of choice, this Berry Grunt recipe will satisfy any sweet tooth and make the most of your region’s seasonal offerings. This old-fashioned dessert is similar to a cobbler, but has fluffy dumplings on top. Even better, this sweet treat can be made over the campfire or on your stove in less than half an hour helping you get back to summer fun.

Berry Grunt Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes Makes: 8 servings During the summer months, Canadians across the country are fortunate to have access to fresh and naturally sweet local berries. Whether you prefer to pick them yourself at a local farm

or buy them at a farmers’ market or a fresh fruit truck on your way to the cottage, berries easily add the taste of summer to any dessert. Ideal for seasonal baking, berries are also rich in

or a combination • 1 can (300 mL) Eagle Brand regular or low fat sweetened condensed milk • 1/2 cup (125 mL) water • 2 tbsp (30 mL) lemon juice • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) ground cinnamon • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) ground nutmeg Dumplings: • 3/4 cup (175 mL) Robin Hood original all-purpose flour • 1/4 cup (50 mL) sugar • 1 1/2 tsp (7 mL) baking powder • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt • 2 tbsp (30 mL) butter • 1/3 cup (75 mL) milk Directions:

Ingredients: Sauce: • 4 cups (1 L) blueberries, raspberries, strawberries or blackberries,

1. Sauce: Place berries, sweetened condensed milk, water, lemon juice, cinnamon and nutmeg in a large pot or Dutch oven with a lid. Stir well to combine. Bring to a boil and cook gently

until slightly cooked down. 2. Dumplings: Combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a medium mixing bowl. Cut in butter and add milk. Drop batter by spoonfuls into hot berry sauce. Cover tightly with lid and simmer for 15 minutes, making sure not to lift the lid. The dumplings should be puffed and well-cooked. 3. Place dumplings in serving dish and ladle sauce on top. Camping tip: Can also be made in cast iron Dutch oven over campfire. To make preparing the dumplings even easier, pre-measure dry ingredients in a re-sealable bag, add in remaining ingredients and mix. Talking dreams, inspirations with the first lady CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Canada’s first lady, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, took time out of her busy schedule July 19 to meet with 56 youth members of Trust 15 – a north Etobicoke-based not-for-profit that provides mentorship programs for inner-city youth – for an afternoon of tea, spoken word and musical performances, and inspirational messaging. “Your true potential sits in a place inside of you,” Trudeau told youth from Trust 15’s Ladies on the Rise and Men of Distinction programs during the private event at the University of Ottawa. “Whatever your age is, whatever your religion is, whatever your background is, wherever your family comes from – there is a perfect little creature inside of you who is patient, who is kind, who is loving and who deserves unconditional love.” Trust 15 founder and executive director Marcia Brown said she was touched by the prime minister’s wife’s humility, grace and openness in sharing her time. “Her words when she spoke at the tea party, they were powerful and they were directed at the youth – that’s what I loved about it,” said Brown, a past recipient of the Premier’s Award for Teaching Excellence. “It was so powerful that I had to thank her

so much, but she said, ‘No Marcia, thank you for what you do for the youth.’ Oh my goodness, that was amazing.” Brown’s Trust 15 Youth Community Support Organization was first born in 2011 with the launch of the Ladies on the Rise program to fill what Brown saw as a need for after-school mentorship programming for girls in the

Rexdale neighbourhood. Fast forward five years, and now programming under the Trust 15 umbrella has expanded to encompass three different youth programs that aim to facilitate positive behaviour, creative expression and cooperative working skills – the original Ladies on the Rise program, its brother program Men of

Distinction, and Girls on the Rise, a literacy program for preteen girls. Brown said Trust 15’s high tea with Trudeau, Senator Anne Cools and Etobicoke North MP Kirsty Duncan, was the highlight of the youth’s jam-packed four-day trip to Canada’s capital city. “Madame Trudeau was very humble, very simple, and she just came and interacted with the kids – and that, for them, was their highlight,” Brown said of her youth’s interaction with Canada’s first lady. “The one thing I noticed about her was that she never took her eyes off them until they were finished speaking – she made eye contact.” In her speech to the youth, Trudeau even opened up about her own past struggles with an eating disorder as an example to the youth of the power of overcoming adversity. “Whether it’s an eating disorder, whether it’s violence – whatever your struggle is, the moment you start sharing your story, you’re opening up a world not only to others, but to yourself, because it takes humility, strength, grace, vision and courage to be able to face adversity,” she said. “When people say you truly are your deepest self the way you react when tough things happen in your life, it’s true... and the more we count on each other, the more we can grow as a country and as a society.”

We surveyed partners in each city to determine what causes were most important to them. It was important to us that our employees had a voice in crafting Scoop of Care and determining what initiatives they wanted to support.” JOEY Sherway Gardens is partnering with Peel Youth Village (PYV), a multi-purpose site offering safe, stable residential transitional housing and support services for youth aged 16 to 30.
