Amateur golf championship lands at Weston and Lambton courses Golf clubs host Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship Aug. 10-13 NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Two west-end Toronto golf courses are pairing up to host one of Canada’s most prestigious amateur golf tournaments. And one of Canada’s most decorated amateur golfers, Rexdale native and Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame inductee Warren Sye, will shake off injury and rust to return to his home course to defend the tournament he won 25 years ago. Kingsway native Geoff McLeod is set to tee off at the tournament too. and admission is free. It was the Weston club’s idea to bring back the national championship in honour of its 100th anniversary, which they’re officially celebrating this year. The last time they held it was in 1990 in honour of its 75th anniversary. “We’re very excited and honoured to be hosting it,” said Leo DiMarco, the host club tournament chair from Weston. “We made it a feature event in our 100th anniversary.” GIVE BACK TO THE GAME While it does take the course away from members, he said the club also feels it’s important to give back to the game. “We’re all golfers and we all like the game of golf and I think we have an obligation to give back to the game of golf, and >>>WARREN, page 34

Shared lakeshore trails too dangerous, residents contend TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Robin Clay looked out the 25th storey window of his Palace Place condo and photographed an image long sought by many Humber Bay Shores’ residents. It wasn’t the glow of the Toronto skyline at dusk. It was pedestrians gathered around a male cyclist writhing in pain on the ground after colliding with another cyclist on the waterfront trail. Paramedics transported the injured cyclist to hospital. Cyclist collisions are commonplace on the trail, Clay reported. “It’s a good example of how dangerous the pathways are,” said Clay, who has lived at Palace Place for 11 years. “Many times there are collisions or near misses. “There is a need for >>COUNCILLOR, page 14

Stunt man gears up as the Green Goblin Marvel Universe LIVE! runs Aug. 13-16 at ACC CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com As a huge Spider-Man fan growing up in EtobicokeLakeshore in the ‘90s, Ramon Dickenson always daydreamed about being a super hero. “I always wanted to be able to swing from places, slinging webs and fighting crime. I was fascinated by super heroes, and Spider-Man was definitely my guy,” said the 28-year-old stunt man and movement artist. “I guess I just wanted to be one of the good guys, you know?” Fast-forward to 2015, and Dickenson is now living out that dream – with a slightly sinister twist. As a cast member of Marvel Universe Live! – Marvel’s “action-packed arena spectacular” – the one-time Spider-Man fanatic now hits the stage every day as the famous web-slinger’s archnemisis, Green Goblin. “It’s a fun role, for sure. It’s one of those roles where you get to be really animated, because Green Goblin’s a really sinister, Jokerish-kind of character,” he said during a phone interview from Winnipeg. “It gives me a chance to turn on a switch and just go crazy – and I get to fight and throw bombs at Spider-Man, which is really fun.” Currently on a summer tour across Canada, Marvel Universe Live! is slated to take over the Air Canada Centre in

Time for the Parapan Am Games to shine W hile we’re still basking in the glow of the success of the recent Pan Am Games in Toronto, it’s important not to forget that an equally prestigious athletic event opens tomorrow. The Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games run from Aug. 7 to 15, and residents can do their part to make these Games just as successful as the Pan Ams. The Parapans officially open Friday with ceremonies at York University’s CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium starting at 5:45 p.m. The Parapan Am Games in Toronto will feature more than 1,600 athletes from 28 countries competing in 15 sports. As was the case with the Pan Am Games, competition will take place at a our view number of Toronto venues. There’s track and field at York Celebrate University, swimming, sitting and wheelchair tennis our athletes volleyball at the University of Toronto Aug. 7 to 15 Scarborough, and wheelchair basketball at the Mattamy Centre downtown. There’s archery at Varsity Stadium, and the cycling road races at Ontario Place. Markham, Mississauga, Milton and Whitby are also hosting events for those hoping to catch Parapan action beyond Toronto’s borders. As always, these Games serve as a qualifier for the Paralympics. That’s especially important for a number of top Canadian athletes and teams including the men’s wheelchair basketball team. Our men’s teams are three-time gold medal winners at the Paralympics (including gold at the London 2012 Games) and they are looking to continue their golden ways come the Rio 2016 Paralympics. Their first step on that road comes at the Toronto Parapan Am Games. The Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball team also has an impressive resume, having won Paralympic gold medals in 1992, 1996 and 2000. The excitement for the Parapan Am Games begins this week with the arrival of the torch relay, which will be in Toronto today with stops at Corus Quay, Inukshuk Park, Queens Quay and Yonge Street, and David Pecaut Square for a community celebration at 12:30 p.m. that will feature a guest appearance by Rick Hansen. Tomorrow, the torch relay visits Variety Village in Scarborough, Queen’s Park, and the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto on Spadina Road in advance of the opening ceremonies.

guest column

Straight talk about the dog days of summer My message box got a serious workout over the long weekend. It was standing and screaming room only in there. Everybody was whining up a storm. But it wasn’t about the hot weather. It was about the phrase du jour referring to it. Q. Jamie, I always hate the beginning of August. The only expression we ever hear is the ‘dog days of summer’. We’re bombarded with it. The dog days of summer, the dog days of summer, the dog days of summer. Enough already. This has been going on for donkey’s years. No other creatures get even a mention until they’re over. It makes me angry as a bear, I tell ya. When are we finally going to get equal time in the summer for the rest of the animal kingdom? – Gord the Gorilla A. In the next few minutes, Gordo. I don’t want

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY to let the cat out of the bag, but a little bird told me that by the end of the column all will be forgotten and you’ll be happy as a clam. Q. Do you really mean it, Jamie? I’ve had ants in my pants over this since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. – Karina the Kangaroo A. Cross my heart. This comes straight from the horse’s mouth. Q. Wait a minute. I thought you just got through saying it was a bird that gave you the news. This all sounds rather fishy if you ask me. – Arnold the Armadillo A. Don’t get your feathers in a bunch. The horse called first. The bird tweeted right after. OK? Q. Jamie, do you mind if

I talk turkey for a second? – Penelope the Peacock A. Would you be a lamb and try back around Thanksgiving? I promised to resolve this dog days of summer controversy before the end of the column. If I don’t do it, I have a hunch I’ll be hearing about it until the cows come home. Q. You’ll be hearing about it long after they arrive, too. No other animals can get on the map this time of year. It’s the nature of the beast, I’m afraid. Don’t you think it’s time to accept that you’re barking up the wrong tree? – Zoe the Zebra. A. On the contrary, I was about to pull a rabbit out of a hat here. Anything is possible. All you have to do is believe. Q. Yeah and pigs might fly, too. Sorry, but I’m with Zoe on this. – Wally the Walrus A. Boo hoo. I’m crying crocodile tears. I hate to

break it to the two of you, but it’s all just water off this duck’s back. I guarantee you’ll both be eating crow. But it’s not up to me. I’ll leave the deciding vote to the final questioner of the day. Q. I believe. I believe. I believe. Now, with that out of the way, let’s get to the most important part of this discussion. After I’m done eating, any chance of going back for seconds? As far as I’m concerned one can never get enough crow and you can see by my attached selfie that I’m a growing boy. – Harvey the Hippotamus A. That I can, and thanks for tipping the scales in my favour. But as for the extra helping? Well, I wouldn’t count my chickens before they hatch if I were you. New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

Rangers ready to hit the field in CNE tourney ALI RAZA razaa08@gmail.com

T

he Etobicoke Rangers are set to compete in the 59th annual Lions-CNE Peewee Baseball Tournament running Aug. 21 to Sept. 3. As it’s the team’s first time in the oldest youth sporting event in Ontario, The Guardian spoke with the team’s assistant coach Richard Forrest to see how the boys are preparing for the tournament and what they hope for at the 2015 Canadian National

Exhibition. “We’re quite excited about it,” Forrest said. “I think they have a good shot.” The Rangers spend the year playing games in the Peewee division, the Toronto Baseball Association (TBA) and the Central Ontario Baseball Association (COBA). It makes for a busy season as the team plays up to 60 games per year. The Lions-CNE tournament brings 32 teams from across southern Ontario competing over nine days in

a single elimination event. For the Rangers, it’s a challenge they are ready for. “We’re second in the Toronto standings and first in COBA,” Forrest said. “We’ve kept the team balanced making sure everyone plays an equal amount of time. We think in the long term that’s how they get to be one of the better teams in the province.” The Peewee division includes boys ages 12 and 13, so the 60 games and practices put a strain on parents and kids alike. But the team’s results this year Top, Etobicoke Rangers’ pitcher/catcher Adam Pinnock performs a preworkout stretching routine at Tom Riley Park Sunday evening as the team prepares for the 2015 CNE Peewee Tournament. have proven worth the effort. The regular league schedule has the Rangers playing three to four games a week, combined with practices and other league games, the team is on the field five times a week. “They do get exhausted,” Forrest said. “Some times are better than others, we try and stagger the practices so we have a few days off a week.” August is the team’s busiest month, bringing in games from three leagues and now the Lions-CNE

SCHEDULE The first round of games runs Aug. 21 to 28 with the quarter finals taking place Aug. 31. The Semi-finals run on Sept, 1 and the final is set for Sept. 3

tournament. But the tough schedule teaches the pre-teens discipline and time management skills that translate to school, their first jobs and other milestones in their lives. “It teaches them if you work hard and focus on the task on hand, then ultimately there will be some

benefits,” Forrest said. The Rangers are led by Forrest, head coach Andrew Tulshi, with several parents lending their help. Win or lose, Forrest said it’s the passion of the players that counts. “The guys are always enthusiastic to get out and play,” he said. The Lions-CNE tournament will be held at Coronation Park for the first time in its 59-year history. The event also includes a Women’s Fastball tournament and an Old Timers game.

30 PEOPLE WITH HEARING LOSS Qualified Participants Needed for Technology Field Test

During this Limited-Time event, we are looking for people like you, who may be experiencing varying levels of hearing loss to evaluate a remarkable new line of digital hearing aids and a rehabilitative process that could be the solution to your difficulties. Call us toll-free today at one of the numbers below to see if you qualify for this Field Test. Potential candidates will be given a FREE hearing test to determine candidacy. Participants will be given a FREE in-office demonstration, and the opportunity to evaluate the latest, most advanced hearing aid technology for 30 days at drastically reduced rates. A refund* is available at the end of the test period if you feel your test aids do not improve your hearing. re t open-fit op A full range of sizes are available in this new technology, including the exceptionally disscreet and IIC models shown here: Courtesy/Shazia Khan

Similar to choosing between contact lenses or glasses, you can decide with your hearing professional which hearing aid style would best suit you. Both styles have approximately the same performance and functions, but are fitted to the ear differently.

It’s almost a shame this technology isn’t more visible! Open-fit and Invisible-In-the-Canal (IIC) hearing aids are smaller and more beautiful than ever, striking the perfect balance between size and performance. The elegant and highly discreet open-fit hearing aid fits perfectly on top of your ear, and the thin tube in your ear canal is designed to disappear against your skin. The new IIC hearing aid--now with wireless technology--provides all of the outstanding features and benefits you want in a digital hearing aid, minus the stigma that came with wearing one in the past.

With cupcakes and tie-dye kits in hand, employees from WagJag popped into the Girlz Space program at Women’s Habitat July 29 to throw a colourful fifth anniversary bash. Since December 2009, WagJag – a division of Metroland Media Group – has been offering online restaurant, shopping and event deals to Canadians. Marketing co-ordinator Ashley Rosenberg said her team wanted to mark its fiveyear milestone by giving back to the community. “We didn’t want to celebrate by just having a party for us in the office. We wanted to do something more than that,” she said. Women’s Habitat has been running the Girlz Space program at its outreach centre on Islington Avenue for the past seven years. After school programming serves at-risk girls from south Etobicoke throughout the year. Two-week long summer camps are currently running with girls between grades 5 and 10. The camps, facilitated by staff and high school volunteers who previously attended

Girls thrive better in an all-female environment. When they’re at school, they can’t talk about certain things with boys in the classroom.

– Michelle Fraser, young women’s outreach counsellor, Women’s Habitat

Girlz Space, offer a safe and comfortable environment to have fun, make new friends and learn critical thinking and leadership skills. Topics like bullying, body image, safety and healthy relationships are discussed to provide girls with the knowledge necessary to make positive life choices. “Girls thrive better in an all-female environment. When they’re at school, they can’t talk about certain things with boys in the classroom,” said young women’s outreach counsellor Michelle Fraser. “Here they can talk openly and see other girls as role models. The girls always say it feels like home.” Fraser said the camps give girls opportunities they may not be able to afford otherwise like field trips to Canada’s Wonderland and

Scooter’s Roller Palace. “When the Lecent Ross shooting happened in Rexdale, they asked ‘why does this happen in our community?’” Fraser said. “We talk about safety and who they can turn to for help and support.” During lunch provided by the WagJag team, the girls put down their pizza to share their thoughts on Girlz Space and its leaders. They called Fraser their “second mother” and compared her to an eagle, always keeping watch. “Everyone at Girlz Space is a friend,” said one of the campers. “If one of your friends has troubles, you have to help them.” Activities aim to build selfesteem and promote personal strengths and capabilities. “I’m going to start high school in the fall. I’ve learned to be confident in myself,” one of the girls said. “Everyone is different and has flaws. It’s important to accept everyone and just roll with it.” With the help of the WagJag team, the girls rolled white WagJag T-shirts into buckets of dye to create custom psychedelic tie-dye creations.

Councillor working with police, TRCA on enforcement and traffic calming >>>from page 1 dedicated paths for bikes and pedestrians. Hopefully, this acts a catalyst.” That section of the Martin Goodman Trail west of the Humber Pedestrian Bridge into Mimico is a shared path among pedestrians, cyclists, online skaters, dog walkers and parents pushing strollers. Farther east, where the trail is wider, it is marked in paint – one side for pedestrians, the other for cyclists. Concer ned residents clamor for a similar safety solution on the trail in Etobicoke. Clay reported he was once struck on the trail by a cyclist while riding his bike. “I was hit,” he recalled. “I was on my bike and signaled to turn left. He gave me no indication he was coming (from behind). Basically, he blamed me.” Clay, and others, report the speeding cyclists are

avid riders decked out in full cycling gear often traveling in groups of four or more. “They speed past like hell. It’s just so inconsiderate,” Clay said. “I’ve talked with so many people who have had near misses. One lady grabbed her dog just in time.” C l a y s u g g e s t e d a re a Councillor Mark Grimes approach Toronto police to increase enforcement on the trail. Grimes reported police conducted enforcement on the trail two weeks ago. “It’s a shared path. People walking their dogs, pushing strollers, Rollerblading, seniors out walking. These cycling clubs go flying through there. People need to respect it’s a shared path.” Grimes said his office is working with city staff to separate out a new path at Humber Bay Shores. A fix for the narrower Mi m i c o t ra i l c o u l d b e informed by results of a city

pilot project in the Don Lands, the councillor said. “Maybe some pavement markings, speed limit signs, different types of materials on the path, rumble strips,” Grimes said. “We hope to learn a lot from the pilot project. In the meantime, we’ve got 22 Division officers doing enforcement, the TRCA is cutting back the plants, and my staff is putting our Slow Down signs there.” Recently, Grimes and his staff designed, had printed and distributed nearly 400 “Slow Down –— Children at Play” signs to area residents to place on their front lawns. Grimes’ staff installed some of the signs along the trail, and plan to place more there, and in city parks. “All of a sudden in the last few months we’ve seen a spike in calls for traffic calming,” Grimes said. “We put a campaign together to get these lawn signs made. Now they’re flying off the shelves.

Everyone wants them.” Aaron Gilmour, Mimico Residents’ Association vicepresident, said his group is encouraged by Grimes’ signs after it wrote him a letter outlining trail safety concerns last week, and earlier in April. But residents want more. “We just want some simple signs with a speed limit,

The Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI) is helping high school students in Toronto stake out their future career paths. In 2006, the Ministry of Youth and Children’s Services partnered with the Toronto Police Services Board and the Toronto Police Service (TPS) to implement the YIPI as part of an Ontario government youth opportunity strategy. The employment initiative focuses on diverse youth between the ages of 15 and 18, who reside in the 39 priorityidentified neighbourhoods within Toronto. Each summer, approximately 150 students work full-time within Toronto’s 17 police divisions, 48 support units and external agencies. Along with assisting officers with daily tasks on the road and in the office, the students, referred to as “YIPIs,” gain practical experience writing for TPS newsletters, assisting the IT department with installations, and handing out crime prevention flyers. Youth are also privy to firstaid training and help managing their personal finances. Program co-ordinator Melva Radway said the initiative exposes youth to real work environments and educational assignments. She said it benefits young people interested in any field, not solely policing. “For some of them, this is their first time being employed,” she said. “They are learning new skills and how to interact with people.” Radway said the revolving door of new people and experiences often leads to personal transformations within the YIPIs over the summer.

As participants in Toronto Police Service’s Youth in Policing Initiative Zakarie Ibrahin, Ausbourne Ollivierre and Malik Blair are spending the summer working alongside officers from 23, 11, and 22 divisions respectively.

“We have some shy kids who start with us and by the end you’re wondering ‘Okay, is this the same person?’” she said. During training, YIPIs gain a solid understanding of the rank structure and the inner workings of the service by touring the TPS Emergency Task Force, K-9, forensics, homicide, marine and mounted units, as well as the Toronto South Detention Centre. Malik Blair is currently working with 22 Division and said he hopes the program will help him get a job with the City of Toronto in the future. “It teaches young people skills for the actual workplace like getting along with other people and responsibility,” he said. “ It teaches you how to be accountable for your faults and mistakes.” Pa r k d a l e’s Au s b o u re Ollivierre applied to the program after seeing how it benefitted his older brother. He hopes to pursue a career as an auto-engineer and said working with his local division is enhancing his skill set. “It’s interesting to work in 11 Division because it’s relatively new,” he said. “There are a lot of friendly

officers that love YIPIs, and I can gain a lot of knowledge from them.” Zakarie Ibrahin, who is working with 23 Division, said the guest speakers are really motivating and that the program looks great to prospective employers on a resume. “It helps you build experience and choose what you want to be in the future,” he said. During the Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival kickoff at TPS headquarters on July 31, Toronto Mayor John Tory applauded the YIPI program and happily posed for pictures with the youth in attendance. “It allows young people to get to know the police better and vice versa,” he said. “It lays down roots on both sides, which are important in forming relationships to ensure a safe community.” The youth in the summer portion of the program will receive a certificate of completion at their graduation ceremony Aug. 22. The YIPI continues throughout the fall and winter with afterschool programming.

LEAF challenges Toronto residents to quench the thirst of parched trees The past few weeks of extreme heat coupled with lack of rain is putting urban trees at risk, say urban forest advocates at LEAF (Local Enhancement & Appreciation of Forests). And so, LEAF is calling on residents to help the trees along streets, in parks and in their own yards by giving them a much needed drink of water. “Urban trees offer great benefits during the hot summer months, reducing the need for air conditioning and lessening the strain on our electric grid. Unfortunately, during hot dry periods of summer, they are much more vulnerable than they appear,” Janet McKay, executive director of LEAF, said in a statement. “Often by the time the effects of drought become noticeable, it’s too late.” Toronto’s urban trees act as natural cooling systems, providing shade and reducing temperatures of the surrounding air. Large trees can

LEAF says city trees need a drink of water.

discharge up to 375 litres of water per day drawing water molecules up through their roots and releasing them out through each leaf surface. Without an adequate supply of water, this process, called evapotranspiration, cannot take place. Leaves may begin to droop or wither, and trees may even begin to drop as the tree tries to conserve water.

“We desperately need our urban trees to help cool our cities and clean our air. Right now they are struggling to do that because of lack of water. They can’t come in out of the heat like we can. They have to stand there and bake in the sun,” McKay said. “The least we can do is give them a much needed drink.” McKay suggests watering trees in the early morning or evening. Ensure water does not run off onto driveways, sidewalks or streets where it will be wasted. Street trees are particularly vulnerable where they’re surrounded by paved surfaces. Small or young trees should be given three to four buckets of water every other day. More mature trees should be watered with a soaker-hose or regular garden hose. Water should flow slowly from the hose for up to an hour once or twice a week.

Picking a batch of mushrooms from one of Toronto’s parks could add an exotic accent to a steak dinner. Depending on the mushroom you pick, that dinner could also send you on a hallucinogenic spiral, throw you into a seizure, send your blood pressure soaring, or worst-case scenario, put you on a short list for a liver transplant. And other supposedly edibles that are found in the city’s ravines and forested areas aren’t much safer, according to Dr. Margaret Thompson, Medical Director at the Ontario Poison Centre. “We’ve had calls from patients who thought they were picking wild parsnips and ended up having seizures – patients who thought they were picking wild leeks who ended up with gastrointestinal problems,” Thompson said. According to Thompson, the poison centre hears from about 250 people who’ve had a bad experience with foraged mushrooms, and many more who have eaten something else that disagreed with them. It is all a matter of correctly identifying what you’re eating. The only trouble is, with Toronto’s diverse ecology, making that identification can require a microscope and a professional. “We just want everybody to be aware that not all mushrooms are safe and it’s only a mycologist that might be able to determine the difference between a poisonous and non poisonous mushroom, by looking at it under a microscope – some of them are so close in physical properties you can never be too safe.” Thompson is helping Toronto get the message across that city parks are no place for foragers. Taking plants and other objects out of a park is prohibited in city bylaws, and in addition to the risk to human health, doing so can disrupt often delicate ecosystems. Thompson said that many

people who forage do so because of a family tradition, a desire for exoticism, or because they have come here from countries where foraging is more common. “If you’re looking for mushrooms or truffles and if it looks like a mushroom that was back home and safe to eat, why not eat it in Canada, it’s probably the same thing,” she said. “The people we see are not the child who has a bite of a mushroom – it’s the one who purposefully goes out because it’s a delicacy.” Wild Edible Mushrooms of Ontario According to Northern Bushcraft, http://bit. ly/1W1MxVk, which publishes a list of edible mushrooms in Ontario including the Toronto area, there are 29 varieties of edible wild mushrooms in this provide. The website notes, how-

“We just want everybody to be aware that not all mushrooms are safe and it’s only a mycologist that might be able to determine the difference... – Margaret Thompson

ever, “this list only contains ‘safe’ mushrooms – those that can be reliably identified and have no deadly-poisonous lookalikes.” The website warned: “do not attempt to identify a mushroom by matching the pictures alone; compare all the listed characteristics. Never experiment with a mushroom that you cannot positively identify. “A poisonous mushroom can kill you.”

Nominations open for Ontario heritage awards Deadline for nominations is Sept. 30 Nominations are currently being accepted for both the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage and Young Heritage Leaders awards. As the Ontario Heritage Trust’s annual recognition programs, the awards celebrate the contributions of individuals, groups and communities in “demonstrating leadership, commitment, creativity, positive impact on their community and good conservation practices.” The Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Awards are awarded in four categories: n Excellence in Conservation: recognizes

individuals, groups, organizations and communities for exceptional achievements through the completion of a specific conservation project. n Community Leadership: recognizes exemplary leadership by a community in heritage conservation and promotion. n Lifetime Achievement: recognizes outstanding volunteer contributions by an individual over a period of 25 years or more. n Youth Achievement: recognizes exceptional contributions by young individuals and groups, age 24 and under. The individual recipient also receives the $2,000 Young Heritage Leaders post-secondary scholarship, jointly funded by the Ontario Heritage Trust and Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life.

Young volunteers may also be nominated for recognition through the Trust’s Young Heritage Leaders program. Since 2000, hundreds of youth have been recognized through the program for their efforts to identify, preserve, protect and promote Ontario’s heritage. Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life have supported Young Heritage Leaders since the inception of the program. The deadline for nominations is Sept. 30. Chen will be running as a Liberal candidate in the new federal riding of Scarborough North. “It’s really been a pleasure to work with this new board of trustees,” said Chen, calling this past year a time of transformation at the board. “ We approved a new

serve as acting chair until trustees meet in the near future to select a new chair. Chen noted he will also be taking a leave of absence as the Scarborough-Rouge River (Ward 21) school trustee and not accepting any salary from the TDSB as he focuses on campaiging for the upcoming federal election on Oct. 19. Kicking into campaign mode, Chen said one of the concerns he’s already heard from constituents in the diverse riding of Scarborough North is a lack of opportunity and support for young people to get good jobs. “There needs to be change not only in Toronto but across the country,” Chen said. “We need a national education plan that enables our young people to be successful.” Visit our website at insidetoronto.com for local and national election news as we approach the Oct. 19 federal election.

Fare hike would help with $99 million shortfall DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com T h e To r o n t o Tr a n s i t Commission’s long-held $3 adult cash fare could be among the fares to rise in 2016, as the commission’s budget committee asked for a report including that and other options last week. The fare hike would help deal with a $99 million shortfall that’s predicted for 2016 – soaking up about $30 million of that. The committee is asking for the report to look at a number of scenarios, including hiking Metropass fares and having the fare increase entirely borne by the cash fares, as well as simply spreading the fare increase across various media. It will also study the impact that the Presto fare card will have on fare structure once it’s implemented at the end of 2016. TTC Commissioner and

city councillor Joe Mihevc, who sits on the commission’s budget committee, said it will be a “very, very delicate issue.” “It is true that many people from vulnerable communities find three dollars hard enough in and of itself – and you can’t raise it 10 cents, you’ve got to raise it at least a quarter. And yet raising it is a damn difficult thing to do.” Mihevc said that at the

same time, raising the fares on tokens and Metropasses can’t bring them too close to the cash fare, or people will simply start paying cash. “If there is a light at the end of the tunnel it is the Presto card, which will be solidly in place by the end of next year,” he said. “You can raise fares by two cents if you want to take it from the Presto card. That will allow for more variability.” Mihevc said that he hasn’t given up hope on persuading Toronto council to increase its subsidy to the TTC, and somewhat fainter hope in convincing the provincial government to fund the TTC operations. “But when the province and the city weigh in there are only two strategies left – one is to raise fares, and one is to cut service,” he said.

Toronto Rocks Ottawa Electric wheelchair hockey comes to Humber Canada’s top electric wheelchair hockey teams descended on Etobicoke over the Civic Holiday Weekend. And the host Toronto Rock team kept the hardware at home, winning the national gold medal game 4-3 over the Ottawa Capitals. Held every two years, the five-team national championship was held at Humber College’s north campus. The Rock won its semifinal game 2-1 over the defending champion Calgary Selects.

Fittingly, Toronto had tied both of those teams in the preliminary round – 1-1 and 0-0, respectively against Ottawa and Calgary. In its other two preliminary round games, the Toronto Rock defeated London Electric Knights 7-1 and the Manitoba Power Bisons 5-2. The Canadian Electric Wheelchair Hockey Association is a floor hockey league for people with disabilities who have limited upper body strength.

From Toronto’s opening 7-1 win over London: (Bottom left) Toronto Rock Michael Martins carries the ball past London defenders; (Below) London’s Robbie Hernandez, left, rushes Toronto’s netminder Dan Di Poce for his team’s lone goal; (at left) Rock coach Seamus Britton, centre, talks to his team during a time out.

Warren Sye holds one world amateur, two national, and five Ontario titles >>>from page 1 that’s what I think we’re doing here, giving something back to the game by giving these fine mostly young amateur players a place to show their skills.” Sye’s championship win in 1990 on his home course was the first of two national amateur titles, his other one coming in 1994, after which he was afforded a life membership at Weston where his father – a longtime employee at closed Kodak company in York – was also a longtime member. The Thistletown Collegiate grad’s amateur resume is long and illustrious; he was voted one of the Top 16 Canadian Male Amateur Golfers of the Century in a cross-Canada poll conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association. In addition to his two national amateur titles, he is a five-time Ontario champion and his crowning achievement was in 1986 as a member of the only Canadian team to win the World Amateur Team Championship. This time around Weston could not be the sole host because the tournament field of about 250 golfers is too big and requires two courses for the first two days. And that’s where Lambton comes in.

I started playing a little better this past week and I said, you know, the people at Weston are great – it’s been my club all my life – so I opted to play in (the championship). – Warren Sye

Warren Sye is one of Canada’s most decorated amateur golfers.

“We were more than happy to assist them,” said Lambton’s director of golf, Matthew Yustin. For Lambton, it could be a test run for something even bigger: hosting the world’s top professional women’s golfers. Yustin said the club has been approached to hold the Canadian Ladies Open in 2017. “Lambton’s getting back in the rotation for big tournaments,” he added.

The last time a top touring event stopped by Toronto was in 2010 when the St. George’s Golf and Country Club, also in Toronto’s west end, hosted the RBC Canadian Open, which is a stop on the men’s PGA Tour. Both Weston and Lambton courses are no strangers to big championships – just not recently. In fact, both clubs are indelibly associated with a couple of the last century’s top professional golfers playing at Canada’s top professional event – the Canadian Open. Arnold Palmer won his first pro tournament at Weston in 1955 and there’s now a statue, unveiled by Palmer himself in 2005, to commemorate the event. And Sam Snead won the 1941 Canadian Open at Lambton.

Weston has chipped in with one amateur national (in 1990) and one Canadian Open (in 1955), but Lambton’s history is even more decorated, hosting the amateur national in 1932, 1919, 1910 and 1907 and the Canadian Open in 1941, 1925, 1910 and 1907. And while Weston has improved its course steadily through the years, Lambton reinvented itself in 200910, undergoing a major makeover at the hands of noted course designer Rees Jones “who completely renovated and restored the entire golf course from top to bottom,” Yustin said. And that is what’s allowing Lambton club members to step back into the fray of hosting big events, he said. “All of the sudden you went from a 6,600-yard golf course that was built 1902 to now a golf course that stretches out to 7,100 yards. It’s just a bigger man-size golf course now.” It’s still probably not big enough, however, he said to put them back into the rotation for Canada’s biggest tournament, the Bell Canadian Open. “We may be a little wary of that, we’re not quite big enough to have the infrastructure...but the Ladies open, that’s something we can

The 16th hole at the Weston Golf and Country Club will be one of the features of the 111th edition of the Canadian men’s amateur golf championship Aug. 10 to 13.

do.” As usual, the tourney format has the players alternating between Weston and Lambton for the first two rounds with Weston hosting the pared down field for the final two days. Sye, who hasn’t played the national amateur in several years, almost had to turn down the invitation after a shoulder injury last August kept him from touching a club for eight months. “I started playing a little better this past week and I said, you know, the people at Weston are great – it’s been my club all my life – so I opted to play in it.” He will go in, he said, with “no expectations.” Sye started out playing golf at Humber Valley Golf Club – his family lived nearby – and also caddying at Weston, eventually joining Weston as a junior in 1969. “This is my 47th year (as a member).” He qualified for his first Canadian men’s national amateur championships in 1973. “I just turned 17 and I played with (golf legend) Craig Stadler the first two rounds. He was a first-team All-American at USC (University of Southern California) and I had no idea of who he was.” McLeod, who grew up in The Kingsway and playing at Lambton, might have an edge. He’s a member of Lambton but also familiar with Weston and, indeed St. George’s and Islington clubs, through plenty of friendly interclub competitions between the Etobicoke clubs. In the investment business for his day job, he’s in the tournament through a club exemption but he’s no stiff: he won the recent Lambton club championship and he previously qualified and played in the national championship once before in 2006 in Mississauga, “back when I was playing college golf (at the University of Western Ontario).” As far as tips, McLeod said, “they’re very different courses.” With its modern re-design, he said “Lambton’s greens are flatter with more subtle breaks and more, I would say, elevated up from the fairway. Weston is very traditional in that the greens are heavily undulated and you need to know the right spots on the green to put it.” For more information, visit Golf Canada online at www.golfcanada. ca/competitions/canadian-mensamateur-championship/
