TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Phase Three of Remington condominiums on The Queensway is a go – and could include a community centre. Etobicoke York Community Council unanimously approved the proposed 19-, 27- and 42-storey condo towers at The Queensway and Zorra Street Tuesday. The development of 981 condo units will provide $1.25 million in community benefits, as well as a 0.67-hectare park immediately north of the property. Phase One has been built. Toned-down Ukrainian festival forges ahead Renamed Ukrainian Independence Day honours past, present freedom fighters CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com The Toronto Branch of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) is forging ahead with its celebrations of the 23rd anni-

versary of the proclamation of Ukraine’s Act of Declaration of Independence this month, despite the fact that that independence is currently being jeopardized by ongoing violence and bloodshed back home.

UCC spokesperson Nadia Prokopiw said she and her fellow Toronto UCC board members made the “tough decision” to continue the festival tradition on Saturday, Aug. 23, at Centennial Park in Etobicoke,

as a show of support for those fighting on the frontlines. “This year we have to try to mellow (the event) down a bit because of what’s happening in Ukraine,” she said, noting that >>>FROM, page 18

Etobicoke girl receives all-star treatment at Blue Jays game on eve of surgery at SickKids Five-year-old Jessica Vecchio diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis as a toddler CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Little Jessica Vecchio was wheeled into the SickKids OR on Friday with a smile on her face, thanks to an upclose-and-personal meeting with the Toronto Blue Jays the night before. “On a night filled with nerves, it definitely helped ease some of that anxiety, and it made going in to SickKids on Friday so much easier, because Jessica had this great story she wanted to share with everybody,” said Kristen Vecchio, Jessica’s mom, of the experience. “It really set the tone for a great experience for the surgery on Friday, because I think Jessica realized she had the support of so many people around her, especially the Blue Jays.” Diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis before her second birthday, Jessica, now 5, was given the opportunity to get down to field level at the Rogers Centre during the Jays’ batting practice before their game against the Baltimore Orioles last Thursday – the night before going under general anesthetic to receive intra-articular joint injections to remove a painful build-up of fluid in her knee. Once on the field, she and older brother Matteo, 7, exchanged waves and stuck-out tongues with All-Star slugger Jose Bautista, shared hugs with ace pitcher Marcus Stroman, got autographed baseballs from outfielders Melky Cabrera and Colby Rasmus, and got an exclusive tour of the dugout from Anthony Gose – who, Jessica is convinced, hit the Jays’ only home run that night just for her. “When he hit it, Jessica looked up at me and said ‘He hit it for me, mommy,’” Vecchio laughed. “The players that Jessica got to really meet (namely Gose and Stroman), you could see that it wasn’t just about baseball for them, it was about devel-

Right, Jessica rests Friday at SickKids hospital after undergoing a procedure to alleviate the painful fluid build-up in one of her knees.

oping those relationships with their fans. And they really did try to make Jessica feel special by asking her questions about herself, and making her feel like a somebody. To them, she wasn’t just a fan, but she had a name, she had a story, and they wanted to hear it.” The whole on-field meet-andgreet experience was arranged for Jessica by the Jays’ Guest Experience staff, who were first alerted to the fact that the Sir Adam Beck kindergartener would be attending Thursday’s game when close family friend Bill Trayling sent them an email request-

ing a Jumbotron birthday announcement for “a very special and strong little girl.” Included in that email request, Vecchio said, was a link to a YouTube video – bit.ly/1yrB0Ad – chronicling Jessica’s story and her rise to Queen of the Fairies at last year’s A Midsummer Night’s Run fundraiser in support of SickKids’ Rheumatology Department. Intrigued by the video, Jays staff did a little more online digging and found even more links to Jessica’s story – including an Etobicoke Guardian profile from last summer

(bit.ly/1kyRipP). From there, Matt Black, supervisor of the Blue Jays’ Guest Experience, contacted us here at The Guardian, we got him in contact with the Vecchios, and “what followed was an evening that Jessica and the rest of us would remember for years to come,” Vecchio said, noting she, her husband Steve, sister Tammy, Trayling, as well as Jessica and Matteo were all invited to attend the game together. As the meet-and-greet came to an end and the Vecchios were preparing to head up to their seats for the

game, Jessica was presented with one last surprise – a brand new pair of purple Nike running shoes for Jessica to wear at this weekend’s ninth annual A Midsummer Night’s Run fundraiser and a note from the Jays reading: “Hopefully this small token of our admiration will be put to good use on Aug. 16. We are so proud of Jessica’s courage and strength in the face of adversity and were all moved by your family’s story. Her smile alone while dealing with everything life has thrown her way is a great reminder to us all to stay positive and appreciate every minute of every day.” The next day, Jessica headed to SickKids proudly donning her new Blue Jays T-shirt and hat and a huge smile on her face, Vecchio said, adding the procedure went so well that her daughter – whose knee had painfully swollen up to the size of a softball – is now back to running around like a regular five-year-old and is anxious to take part in this Saturday’s A Midsummer Night’s Run. Now in its ninth year, A Midsummer Night’s Run – which boasts 5K, 15K and 30K routes through the eastern Beaches and waterfront – has raised more than $260,000 towards a number of SickKids’ Rheumatology Department projects, including: trainee research projects, new patient orientation resources provided to patients to help children cope with and understand their illness, and the Rheumatology team’s participation in Paediatric Rheumatology - Care and Outcomes Improvement Network (PR-COIN). This year will mark Jessica and her family’s fourth year of participation in the fundraising run – a very worthy cause, Vecchio said. Tapping into city’s citizen engagement

T

he fabulous attendance at this summer’s festivals in Toronto is a great indication of our willingness to participate in community activities. Now the challenge is how to turn those once-a-year adventures into community enrichment throughout the year. The city is rich with artistic, cultural and culinary festivals – a great opportunity for community-building. This past weekend’s Taste of the Danforth, which organizers say attracted a staggering 1.6 million people over three days, is festival participation at its best. Looking ahead to this weekend, there’s the York-Eglinton International Street Festival taking place locally. And, of course, the Canadian National Exhibition kicks off its two-and-a-half-week run tomorrow. Good turnouts mean people are engaged. We see it here at our website, insidetoronto.com, where our our view community calendar of events seen a significant increase Make the most has in events posted by the comand in the increased of our cultural munity number who have searched the diversity site for events this summer. To see our events listings, to submit an event or find out more, visit bit.ly/torontocalendar for everything you want to know. How do we take that obvious citizen engagement we see and get it applied on a more year-round basis? Imagine the possibilities. Cultural events happen throughout the year. These are opportunities to learn more about the city and the people who live here. It’s more than just festival life – it’s the lifeblood of the city. Now couple that with cooking courses offered in a myriad of locations. So challenge yourself. Pick one culture unfamiliar to yourself and learn to make a meal from that culture. Seek out one artist or musician and become familiar with their style of music. Learn the origin of the peoples and come to appreciate why people of other ethnicities chose to call Toronto home. The exposure that’s taking place right now of different cultures in Canada’s most diverse city is a critical piece of Toronto’s continuing evolution. We are rich in culture. Make the most of the opportunity. Find out more about the communities that make up the city – and find avenues for personal growth in the experiences we share, in the teaching of our children and a growing appreciation of Toronto as the city it is today.

Election still very much Rob Ford’s to lose

D

oes anyone in Toronto love Olivia Chow or John Tory as much as Irene Borecky and thousands like her love Rob Ford? That could be the key question in this fall’s election, which is still Ford’s to lose. Standing in line at Ford Fest recently, hearing people seriously compare the man to Jesus Christ, Pierre Trudeau and, strangest of all, David Crombie, I was struck by how unconditional is the love Ford’s fans give him. Some of us want to think politics isn’t a personality contest, and that the person with the best ideas, the best political record, should be elected Toronto’s mayor. That’s not how it works with most people, who vote politicians in because they like them. And Ford’s core supporters love him, many thinking, as Borecky does, that other politicians “are

mike adler the city fakes,” and Ford’s different. “He’s one of us. He’s like us. He’s fallible like the rest of us,” said Borecky’s friend Maria F., who didn’t give her full name. “We’re not judgemental people.” Actually, many Ford fans are judgemental people. They judge him innocent, and others guilty. And many point to transgressions or admissions of drug use by other politicians, seeing a double standard applied to Ford. Standing with Ford Nation flags in her hair at the somehow-nota-campaign-event in Scarborough’s Thomson Park, Borecky called Tory, a man she said she voted for in the past, a “spendand-tax Liberal.” She said the former Ontario Progressive

Ford reminds Ford fans of themselves: they feel they’ve been cheated by the city somehow; they’ve made mistakes, battled addictions, or felt pressured to quit something, but kept going.

Conservative leader’s decision to put his campaign headquarters at Bay and Wellesley streets, “where the Bay Street money is,” was stupid. Based on how it looks, she may be right. Other people in the park gave only vague reasons why Ford should be reelected; such as he tries to keep taxes low, or “hasn’t stolen a cent from us.” Mostly, though, you sense Ford reminds Ford fans of themselves: they feel they’ve been cheated by the city somehow; they’ve made mistakes,

battled addictions, or felt pressured to quit something, but kept going. The mayor’s scandals have blurred into a vague smudge that can be dismissed by the faithful as no big deal. Love for Ford will survive an October defeat, since, as Ford Fest-goer Pat Mason explained, none of the man’s opponents, should they beat him, can manage the city without his help. “If he doesn’t win, he’s not going to lose,” Mason predicted. “We will still look at him as the mayor.” Thelma Casimir, holding a hamburger, said she’s praying for him, and pronounced him perfect. “He went through hell. My man is back in shape.” Tory, or Chow, need some of that same adoration if they’re going to win. Metroland Media Toronto reporter Mike Adler is on the city hall beat while David Nickle is on vacation.

‘Joyous’ boy, 10, wishes for trip to Florida theme park Courtesy Chevrolet seeks help to grant Markus Suriani’s dream TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Markus Suriani is eagerly anticipating some real-life magic this October. The Port Credit boy’s wish is to go to a Florida theme park with his family this fall following his remission from a seven-month battle with rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancerous tumour of the muscles attached to bones in his skull. Courtesy Chevrolet at 1635 The Queensway has made a $10,000 commitment to MakeA-Wish to ensure Markus’ wish comes true. Make-A-Wish is a non-profit charity with eight chapters across Canada dedicated to granting the wishes of children and youth ages three to 17 with a life-threatening medical condition to “have, be, go or meet”. Magic-loving Markus, 10,

his mom, Lina, dad, Steve, older brother, Lukas and aunt and cousin were treated lat Thursday to Toronto magician Coby’s half-hour show and cake, and a chance to meet the people making his dream a reality at the car dealership near the Mississauga border. “This is awesome,” Markus said, as he sported his black top hat and cape. “(The theme park) seems really fun. I love rollercoasters!” Markus’ mom, Lina Suriani, added: “It’s nice to meet people who help to make your wish come true.” The family is elated, and moved by the generosity of strangers, she said. “We’re overjoyed,” Suriani said. “It has been a rough, rough year. It has given us a different type of strength as parents. You can’t give up. You have to be strong so he can be strong.” Stacey Polyschuk, Courtesy

Markus Suriani, who has Rhabomyosaracoma, was granted a wish with the help of Courtesy Chevrolet and Make-A-Wish that will allow him to go to a Florida theme park.

Chevrolet owner, has committed $10,000 to Make-A-Wish for Markus’ wish. So far, the dealership has raised $2,750. Customers, suppliers and vendors have donated. Courtesy Chevrolet is donating $25 from every test drive, and $5 or $10 from every service work order, depending on its cost, to grant Markus’ wish.

But the dealership urged readers to also contribute to Markus’ wish. Diane Parsons, Courtesy Chevrolet’s general sales manager, said the dealership is committed to supporting Make-A-Wish for years to come. “We can only do this with the support of our customers, suppliers and vendors,” Parsons said, amid the

hubbub of activity as more than a dozen employees joined Markus’ family and Make-A-Wish officials for Markus’ day. Fedora hat-wearing Markus described himself as fun, comical and cool. The active boy is back to playing lacrosse and hockey with the Lorne Park Hockey Association. “He’s very artistic. He loves to draw. He loves to do magic,” his mom said. “He’s a joyous boy. He’s always dancing and singing. He’s always happy.” Markus’ parents took him to the Hospital for Sick Children in downtown Toronto July 25 of last year when his left eye was protruding from its socket. Surgeons soon learned his tumour was too large to remove during his first surgery on Aug. 6. A week later, Markus underwent cranial surgery, where surgeons successfully removed the tumour by cutting him “from ear-to-ear” and removing his forehead skull, his Mom recalled. Markus didn’t lose his eye-

sight. But he now has doublevision in his left eye. “Surgeons removed the tumour Tuesday. Markus had an MRI Friday that showed the tumour was already growing back. It’s very aggressive. He had six months of chemotherapy and 25 radiation sessions,” Suriani said. “He has been in remission since March. He goes back every three months to get tested.” Make-A-Wish receives no government funding. Most of its funds is raised by partner corporations and thirdparty events, like school and community-focused bake sales and dances, explained Sheila Rees, Make-A-Wish regional director of Toronto and Central Ontario. “We talk about wishes making an impact on families first, but also on a community,” Rees said. “The staff, clients and customers are what make granting the wish so powerful. This is a dealership with a big heart.”

Mental Health First Aid course helps take the stigma out of suffering

Two-day course at FAME teaches individuals to care for a person struggling with mental health

seeking help. “What stops people mostly from seeking help is stigma,” she said. “They’re afraid because it’s not talked about, it’s taboo, and there’s still a tremendous amount of blame placed on people for succumbing to an mental illness...so people don’t seek recovery, they just run away and they suffer.” While the MHFA course does not teach people how to act as therapists, what it does do is instruct them on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide that initial help, and how to best guide a person towards obtaining appropriate professional help.

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke’s Cindy Krysac knows all too well the crippling toll a mental health illness can take on a person, their family, their workplace, and even their community. Back in 1998, Krysac began suffering symptoms of post-traumatic stress and anxiety disorders after being in a terrible car accident down in California – her recovery from which inspired her to become an advocate for mental health issues. “It was just a mess. I was having seven panic attacks a day, but I was very fortunate in that I was able to receive very good care,” she said, noting that her HMO at the time covered her treatment, coupled with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. “I dove right into it. I was committed to it and was able to recover fully with no panic attacks at all after two years. That was a huge, huge triumph for me and I didn’t want to just walk away – I wanted to share that with other people.” Now living in Etobicoke, Krysac – who has her PhD in physics and works as an industrial electrician – has since joined the board of the Family Association for Mental Health Everywhere (FAME) and last year earned her Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Canada instructor certification from the Mental Health Commission of Canada. Just as typical first aid courses teach individuals to administer aid to a physically injured person before medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA Canada courses instruct people on how to assist someone with a mental health problem until appropriate treatment is found or until the crisis is resolved. “What goes on in the course is it informs people of some basics of

A Mental Health First Aid course is being offered at FAME (Families for Mental Health Everywhere) with instructor Cindy Krysac (left) seen here with Christine Cooper, executive director at FAME.

mental health problems, and also gives them skills in approaching the conversation about mental health – in particular when there’s someone around you, in your family or at your workplace, who is struggling with a problem,” said Krysac, who is set to lead two upcoming courses at FAME in the coming months. “Instead of just giving advice or suggestions, the course teaches you to turn to the evidence – what works, what do people respond to, what do people really need when they’re in a mental health crisis. Well, it’s not your opinion. What they need is to go to a doctor, what they really need

is to speak to a professional, what they really need is to have someone near them, who’s in their support team who is open and receptive and not judging them for having an illness. That’s a massive support that people will respond to.” Here in Etobicoke, the first of Krysac’s upcoming MHFA Canada courses – which she described as 12-hour, interactive workshops divided between two weekends – will take place at FAME’s offices at 268 Royal York Rd. (second floor) on two consecutive Saturdays, on Sept. 6 and 13 from 9 am. to 3:30 p.m., while the second session will be held over two consecutive Sundays, on Sept. 28 and Oct. 5, again from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. At just $150, the cost of the course is well worth it, said Christine Cooper, executive director of FAME. “FAME recognizes how important the fundamentals, even the simple and basic ones, can be to managing, supporting and sustaining a life that

is impacted and coping with mental health issues,” she said, noting that FAME jumped at the chance to offer the MHFA course. “Without question, mental health is the number one health challenge we face. There are literally no lives that go untouched by it. We felt it was our responsibility to try and make all resources, education and advocacy available. We are very fortunate to have this resource available here in our community and FAME is pleased to be able to offer it at such a reasonable cost.” one in every three people According to MHFA Canada, one in every three Canadians will experience a mental health problem at some point in their life – and the earlier a problem is detected and treated, the better the outcome. That’s why education is so important, Krysac said, noting that fear of the stigma of mental health issues often prevent ill individuals from

As such, Krysac said she encourages people from all different backgrounds to sign up and educate themselves – although families affected by mental health problems, teachers, health service providers, emergency workers, frontline workers who deal with the public, volunteers, human resources professionals, employers and community groups are listed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada as those who have especially benefited from the training. And thanks to FAME’s input, the recent review on Police Encounters with Persons in Crisis now recommends that Toronto Police Services recruits obtain their MHFA Canada certificate, too. “I encourage people from all walks of life, all age groups, all community levels to take the course. The more varied the participants’ backgrounds are, the more interesting the course actually is,” she said, noting that her goal is for participants to walk away from the course knowing that they’re not helpless. “When people leave the course, they’re empowered; they’re empowered to help themselves, to help family members and to help coworkers, in a way that has been shown to lead to better chances of recovery.” To register for one of the upcoming MHFA courses at FAME, contact Christine Cooper at 416-207-5032 ext. 27 or by email at christinec@ fameforfamilies.com

GO plans to add more bus services With September fast approaching, GO Transit has announced it will add more service by the end of the month. More bus trips are promised by the regional transit agency, including a new weekend bus route between York University and the University of Waterloo when the modified GO schedule goes into effect as of Saturday, Aug. 30. Visit www.gotransit.com ID rule in effect for student fares wNew

High school and middle school students will no longer need photo IDs to receive discounted fares, the transit commission announced this week. The policy applies to students between the ages of 13 and 19, although TTC staff will still have the option to ask for some form of photo ID, either TTC or government issued, for proof of age. Post-secondary school students will continue to require photo ID to purchase and use

special Metropasses available at a discounted rate from colleges and universities. The new rule goes into effect Monday, Sept. 1. corridor art exhibit unveiled wRail

A new art exhibit by University of Toronto urban design students highlights the development potential of the West Toronto Rail Corridor. Tapping the Potential of the West Toronto Rail Corridor features planning designs and proposals created by the students intended to better connect the corridor with surrounding neighbourhoods. The corridor currently serves local GO and subway operations, and as of 2015 the Union Pearson Express air rail link. The corridor also includes the West Toronto Railpath. The exhibition is at Urbanspace Gallery, on the ground floor of the 401 Richmond St. W. building from Thursday, Aug. 14 until Sept. 20. For info, visit www. urbanspacegallery.ca

Etobicoke rooming house landlord found guilty in fire death of tenant Karnail Singh Dhaliwal died in March 6, 2011 blaze A judge last week ruled that an Etobicoke rooming house landlord took “half-measures at best” when it came to fire safety in order to save money – costing a male tenant his life. On Aug. 6, nearly threeand-a-half years after the fatal fire, Superior Court Justice Bonnie Croll found landlord Jasvir Singh guilty of criminal negligence causing death, criminal negligence causing bodily harm and four counts related to endangering the safety of the four tenants in the house. Singh “concluded the retrofit (for a rooming house) was too costly, so he decided not to comply,” Croll concluded. The landlord instead passed a fire inspection by claiming he was renting the two-storey detached house near Humber College to a single family, with a separate basement unit, she said. Single family dwellings have fewer fire safety requirements because families are more concerned with each other’s safety in the event of a fire than individual tenants, the court heard during the trial. However, Croll ruled that Singh was really renting to three individuals who hardly knew each other. The tenants had locks on their doors to prevent theft and paid rent

separately. She also found that Singh knew through complaints from the other renters that the tenant who started the fire – Karnail Singh Dhaliwal – was an alcoholic who cooked on a hot plate in his room rather than in the kitchen. Dhaliwal’s hot plate caught fire on March 6, 2011, when he fell asleep after drinking a bottle of Crown Royal with a friend who was sharing the room, the court heard. Dhaliwal died of smoke inhalation and his friend, Harbir Bhinder, suffered severe burns and was hospitalized for four days. No smoke alarm went off that night to warn the other two tenants, who were students attending nearby Humber College. It was only when one of them left her room to do laundry that she noticed smoke and started screaming, Croll said. Croll said it remains unclear why the hallway smoke alarm did not go off. She added that if an i n t e rc o n n e c t e d s m o k e alarm system with a smoke detector in each bedroom had been installed as per the fire code for rooming houses, Dhaliwal might have survived. When a fire inspector first visited the house on Oct. 29, 2010, she found six students sleeping on mattresses in

the living room, as well as three bedrooms on the second floor being rented out individually, the court heard during the trial. There was no operational smoke alarm at that time. After six visits by the fire inspector — the last just a month before the fire — Singh understood the requirements for a rooming house and showed a “wanton and reckless disregard” for the safety of his tenants, the judge said. Singh also made a “selfserving, bogus document” presented as evidence during the trial — apparently a letter signed by the three tenants telling them that they are considered a family, must pay rent collectively and are responsible for anyone tampering with the smoke alarms, Croll said. Singh “fabricated the document because of his guilty mind,” she said in her decision. Singh’s wife, Sukhwinder, was acquitted on the same charges because Croll could not find beyond a reasonable doubt she knew about the failure to meet the fire code and about Dhaliwal. Both the Singhs declined to comment. “The law cries out for clarification,” said Jasvir Singh’s lawyer Walter Fox. “We have to consider an appeal at any cost.” A sentencing hearing is scheduled for October.

Three-alarm fire at paper factory causes $1M in damage Four workers treated for smoke inhalation ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

A three-alarm blaze at an Etobicoke factory last Friday, sent four workers to hospital with smoke inhalation and caused an estimated $1 million damage. Fire crews were initially called to Norampac Inc. at 450 Evans Ave. for a general alarm at 10:42 a.m. Toronto Fire Services Capt. Adrian Ratushniak said an off duty firefighter also called in to report smoke coming from the paper production plant. “Then our crews got there and upgraded it to a second alarm at that point.” A third alarm was called at 12:04 p.m. Ratushniak said the fire started in a corrugation machine and spread into

the Staceiling, starting a roof fire.

Large rolls of papers, weighing thousands of pounds, posed a potential danger to firefighters. “They’re trying to be careful not wetting down any paper products that could collapse upon firefighters,” Ratushniak said. Firefighters also minimized water use because high-voltage machinery posed a risk of electrical shock. “Some of the machinery had to be isolated or shut off and locked out,” Ratushniak said. Firefighters were on scene until 7 a.m. Saturday to ensure there were no flare ups. About 30 trucks were dispatched to the call. The fire marshal’s office was notified of the incident but isn’t investigating.

From Shevchenko to Maidan stage show chronicles fight for freedom >>>from page 1 organizers have made a corresponding change in the name of this year’s festival from its traditional Flavours of Ukraine – Celebrating Ukraine’s Independence Day to simply Ukrainian Independence Day. “It was a very difficult choice for us, as to what to do, because usually it’s a happy, festive occasion with everyone celebrating. But this year we’re dealing with a war in Ukraine, and yet we can’t not do this festival because we haven’t lost our independence yet again. So it was a real dilemma for us.” In recognition of the gravity of the escalating violence currently unfolding between government forces and separatist rebels – who the Ukrainian government alleges are being supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin – this year’s Ukrainian Independence Day event will feature a special stage production entitled From Shevchenko to Maidan, chronicling 200 years in

Ukraine’s fight for freedom through song and dance. Shevchenko, Prokopiw explained, refers to this year marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ukrainian national icon Taras Shevchenko, a poet and writer she described as “Ukraine’s Shakespeare,” while Maidan refers to the public square of the same name in Kiev, where protests against Ukraine’s corrupt former government first broke out back in November 2013 to kick-start the revolution. “Shevchenko was a freedom fighter; a leader in the fight for independence from then-czarist Russia and he was born 200 years ago...and because he was kind of the original freedom fighter for Ukrainian independence, we’ve connected that with what’s happening today at Maidan,” she said. “It’s the same thing – people are out on the square fighting for independence. What he was doing 200 years ago with the power of the pen, people are doing today with

The annual Flavours of Ukraine Festival in Centennial Park has been renamed Ukrainian Independence Day this year, to highlight the ongoing violence in the country. molotov cocktails, fire and weapons.” In addition to the 2 p.m. From Shevchenko to Maidan s t a g e s h ow, P r o k o p i w said this year’s Ukrainian Independence Day festival – which runs from 10 a.m. to midnight – will also fea-

ture the usual full slate of Ukrainian dancers and performers, a food fair (including vendors from Golden Lion, Halenda Meats, Lickety’s Ice Cream, Natalie’s Kitchen, Starsky Foods and Wisla Deli), several licensed beer gardens, a marketplace, chil-

dren’s crafts and rides, a sport tournament, and a traditional Zabava outdoor dance party from 7 p.m. to midnight featuring two live bands – Hudi a Mocni and Zapovid – to cap off the festival. Entry and parking are free, but $5 donations are appreciated. Prokopiw said she hopes that Ukrainian-Canadians will be able to find something to celebrate at this year’s festival, despite their grave concerns about family and loved ones back in Ukraine. “Everyone is concerned for sure, because people have family living there, and living in Ukraine is not the same as living here. A lot of people in Canada don’t understand what’s going on there, because they can’t fathom somebody trying to walk over their border and take over their country province by province,” she said, noting that the crash of a Malaysian Airlines passenger jet in a rebel-held region of Ukraine back on July 17 helped draw more international attention

to the Ukrainian cause, but more needs to be done. The crash of Flight 17, which killed all 298 people on board, is believed by many to have been caused by a Russian-supplied missile fired by rebels. “I think that woke a lot of people up to see that Ukraine is not in a civil war, but that it’s Putin trying to create a war of chaos; an undermining attack where you try to infiltrate the government with your own corrupt people, then you send in insurgents. All that is just a way of Putin taking over a country...so yes, people are very concerned,” Prokopiw said. “But we’re not defeated yet, so we can’t just roll up and go away. I think it’s very important that we still continue with this festival. And we still want to make it a celebration, because we are here in Canada and we have lots to celebrate here.” For more information on this year’s Ukrainian Independence Day, go to www.ucctoronto.ca

In addition to tournament play, ELBC volunteers also organized an opening ceremony, including a parade of bowlers led by a bagpiper, and featuring appearances by Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly, Etobicoke Centre MP Ted Opitz and MPP Yvan Baker, as well as representatives from the Ontario Lawn Bowling Association and Bowls Canada. “It was a big operation – the biggest junior championships they’ve ever had,” Osborne added. “But it all went perfectly. Etobicoke teams set for annual CNE peewee tourney TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The Canadian National Exhibition ballpark will be a field of dreams for dozens of Etobicoke, North York, East York and Scarborough peewee baseball players starting this Friday. The Lions-CNE PeeWee Baseball Tournament is the longest-running and mostprestigious baseball tourney for 12- and 13-year-olds in Ontario. It is in its 58th year. A full slate of 32 teams from across Toronto and southern Ontario will compete Aug. 15-28 for the coveted championship in the singleelimination tournament. The tournament’s winning team heads to the Ontario peewee baseball championships. Etobicoke’s Royal York Cardinals AA and AAA and The Etobicoke Rangers fielded representation in the 2014 peewee series, as did two teams from North York, one from East York and one

from Scarborough. CNE ballpark co-ordinator Marvin Pearl has organized the annual, no-entry fee tournament, and its peripheral events, for more than 30 years. In all, he has worked at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) for 44 summers. “I’ve always been interested in sports,” said Pearl, a retired Jarvis Collegiate gym teacher, of his longstanding commitment to the tournament. “The people here at the CNE are really nice. My boss is wonderful; very supportive. We have a nice family here. When I walk in the doors every May, they greet me with open arms. I couldn’t do it without all the volunteers. I enjoy the work.” The tournament is a summer tradition for tween and teen star peewee baseball leagues. “...( T)he excitement of a competitive ball tournament and a day, or five, at the Exhibition is always a summer highlight for thou-

eight rural teams competing against one another. Pegg, a former executive director of the Ontario Baseball Association, has been a member of the tournament’s committee for many years. He still commutes from Flesherton, Ont. to participate in the tournament. The tournament is played at the CNE Ball Park, west of the Dufferin Gates behind the Medieval Times building. Spectators may watch for free. Because the ball park is just outside the CNE grounds, no CNE admission fee is required. It is accessible by TTC. Drivers must pay to park their vehicles. The CNE Ball Park was home to softball in the 1920s, men’s and women’s competitive softball in the 1930s and men’s and women’s softball sponsored by watch company Bulova in the 1940s, Pearl recalled. The 15th annual peewee

all-stars’ weekend takes place Saturday, Aug. 16 and Sunday, Aug. 17 between teams from Toronto, Hamilton, eastern Ontario and western New York. “The ball is excellent,” Pearl said. The annual tournament includes a ceremony honouring “old-timers,” former tournament players to be held on Wednesday, Aug. 20 starting at 6:30 p.m. Professor Bruce Kidd, recently retired longtime head of athletics at the University of Toronto, played in the very first tournament, Pearl recalled. Hockey legends Wayne Gretzky and Etobicoke’s own Ken Dr yden are among famous tournament alumni. Closing out the CNE Ball Park festivities is a rookie ball exhibition series for seven- to nine-year-olds.

Frequent mirgaine solution may be as simple as looking in your mouth There's a very good chance that the migraine pain you feel around the eyes and deep in your temples might actually be alleviated in your mouth. Women in particular are often surprised by this groundbreaking information because far too many don't seek professional help at all. A study of 1,210 Canadian women showed that while 26 per cent suffer with migraine headaches, only 51 per cent of them consulted their doctor about it. These findings were published in the Canadian Journal of Neurological Science. Professional guidance could make all the difference considering the medical advancements today – and this proactivity includes seeking the advice of a neuromuscular dentist. Dental specialists tell us that a large percentage of the world's population has misaligned upper and lower teeth – and the resulting muscle cramps from what we call a 'bad bite' can all too easily

cause migraine headaches. The good news is it can be easily corrected, freeing you of both the headache pain and the constant need for prescription drugs. Here's how to tell if your jaw is misaligned: Bite your teeth together and if more than the tips of your lower teeth disappear behind your upper front teeth, you are at risk of overworking your jawline muscles. Ideally, no more than 1 millimetre should be covered and if it's more, the lower jaw is forced backward which can cause tremendous muscle strain. If you have this indicator – and if you get headaches from minor discomfort to severe migraines – consider booking a consultation with a neuromuscular dentist, who is trained to examine all of the muscles that support your bite. When our teeth are misaligned they can't provide the muscle support needed for chewing and swallowing. The resulting strain often leads to

chronic pain in the face, head, neck, and shoulders. To correct a bad bite, he explains, a neuromuscular dentist takes measurements to determine the natural alignment and then fits you with an orthotic to gradually reposition your jaw to those exact measurements. Once the bite is realigned, the pain (that was caused by the imbalance) disappears. Far too often when a woman seeks help for migraines a well-intentioned doctor asks questions related to her hormone cycle and then some treatment or medication is recommended and the praobing stops – but the headaches don't. If, however, a bad bite had been determined, corrective action would almost certainly lead to an improvement because the specialist would deal with the actual source of the pain, rather than just trying to control the symptoms. - NEWS CANADA

A good night’s sleep is the key to a healthy life When it comes to wellness, we often hear about the importance of healthy eating and regular exercise. But there is a third pillar of wellness that is often overlooked…the importance of a good night’s sleep. People are sacrificing sleep to find more time for their jobs, social networking, housework and commuting. Too many of us sacrifice sleep for other things. We try to get by with less sleep to accomplish more during our waking hours. The reality for most of us is that

without enough sleep we lose our connection with what’s around us and everything suffers – home life, job and health. The average adult needs between seven and nine hours of sleep every night to feel refreshed. But sleep has other health benefits as well. Research by sleep experts across North America shows it boosts hormone production to repair damaged skin cells, improves memory, makes you feel happier, and may help you live longer. It’s important to build in time

for sleep and to protect that time from distractions and tasks. Try these sleep solutions to get a better night’s sleep. Stick to a routine. Train your body by going to sleep and getting up at the same time each day, even on weekends. Avoid stimulants close to bedtime. Stop caffeine by lunch, and try to exercise as early in the day as possible. Power down. People who use their mobile phones and computers before bed have more trouble sleeping, plus the light from screens and buzzing of incoming messages interrupts sleep patterns. De-clutter your bedroom. The bedroom should be a place of calm and minimal distraction. Invest in a good bed. Consider your requirements and look for a bed with good support and comfort. People fool themselves by thinking they have an on-off switch. They go full-tilt and then expect to fall asleep instantly. It doesn’t work that way. For many, good sleep requires a radical simplification of many aspects of your life, but the benefits are worth it -- for mental and physical wellness now and later. - News Canada

Beat Lower Back, Disc And Sciatic Pain Now

hankfully, new natural treatment methods help many find the relief they had been searching for. Sciatica is a painful condition that affects the sciatic nerve. The pain usually radiates into one or both buttocks, descends the back of the leg and can sometime be felt in the foot. It is often a severe, knife-like pain, but can also be noticed as numbness or tingling in the leg and foot. It is unpredictable and does not go away even when you change positions or lay down. Sciatica can result from years of poor posture, muscle strain, pregnancy, excess weight, wearing high heels, or sleeping on a very soft mattress. Sciatica is often a symptom of a slipped disc, pinched nerve or arthritis. Although pain pills may temporarily cover up the symptoms, our holistic approach can provide a more effective, long term relief. “Our team members apply their individual skills and knowledge to make an accurate diagnosis and administer the right treatment that will get the best result for each patient.”

Dr. Peter Ng has a special interest in natural pain relief and Chinese medicine.

Decades-old residents ‘terrified’ of precedent set with approval >>>from page 1 hold the Ward 5 councillor post until this October’s municipal election. It was the longest Etobicoke York Community Council meeting with the most items, 81, in the past council term, councillors mused during the marathon nine-and-a-half hour day. Councillors unanimously endorsed Maloney’s motion t o m ove c i t y p l a n n i n g staff’s recommendation to approve the condo plan, with an amendment that the $1.25-million in community benefits include, but are not limited to: nonprofit licensed daycare facilities, community centres, recreation facilities, a library, arts-related space, local streetscape improvements, Queensway Business Improvement Area projects, and parks in the area.

Barry Horosko, a lawyer representing developer Remington on the Queensway, told councillors: “I think this (project) is illustrative of the future vision envisioned in the Official Plan: the retooling of the third phase of this project.” Remington’s or iginal proposal consisted of two, 49-storey residential condo towers of 1,061 residential units for the Phase Three lands. three shorter towers After the application’s review, the plan was revised to three shorter towers and 80 fewer units. Resident Margaret Grainger characterized the condo plan as “too high, too much, too big.” “In our neighbourhood,

we don’t need a lesson in development. We need schools and traffic-calming measures,” said Grainger, who has lived in the area for more than 60 years. Borka Babic, a founding member of Queensway Residents’ Association, spoke in opposition to the project on behalf of the group. “We’re concerned it will set a new benchmark when the Kipling-Queensway Mall is slated for redevelopment,” said Babic, who has lived two blocks north of The Queensway for 22 years. “There is no community centre, seniors’ centre or library within walking distance. We think the project is very short-sighted.” Maloney told Babic he had met with many Queensway residents, and that he would move city planning staff’s recommendation with an

amendment to include a community centre, which he did. community space “I know the area quite well. I’ve lived not far from there for more than 30 years,” Maloney said. “The addition of community space is an excellent idea and it will be very well-received by the community.” Babic said in an interview condo development on The Queensway is of great concern to Queensway Residents’ Association. “We’re just terrified what’s coming to The Queensway,” Babic said. “Our primary concern in recent years has been massage parlours on The Queensway. This is bigger than massage parlours.”
