Concerns about potential increased traffic, strained infrastructure, overloaded sewage systems, density and height issues and loss of green space dominated the second meeting of the newly formed Glen Agar Residents Association (GARA) – a ratepayers’ group launched recently in reaction to the sale of a community school to a local developer. More than 100 residents came out to the recent meeting at the former Kipling Grove School to voice their concerns over the impending fallout from the Toronto District School Board’s ( TDSB) sale of the six-acre site at 19 Glen Agar Dr. – which currently houses Phoenix Montessori School and Kiddie Village Daycare Centre – to Minto Group Inc., a family owned integrated real estate development, construction and management company. YTV stars go game-show style to warn students about gambling addiction

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Central Etobicoke High School (CEHS) students were treated to an eye-openingly interactive – and side-splittingly funny – game-show-style presentation about the dangers of gambling addiction this week, courtesy of the wise-cracking TV personalities behind YTV’s Splatalot. The Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) commissioned Etobicoke’s Jason Agnew and longtime co-host Matt Philips to host its newly launched Game Brain educational game show, which has been on a tour of Ontario high schools for the last six weeks with stops in Sarnia, Sudbury, North Bay, Lindsay and Etobicoke, to name a few. During the one-hour live show’s stop at CEHS on last Tuesday afternoon, Agnew and Philips kept the participating students in stitches during five game-show-style activities, while also delivering an important message about the pitfalls of gambling addiction. “It’s one of those things where it’s both entertaining and educational. We’re up there spitting out the facts, but we’re doing it in an entertaining way,” Agnew said of Game Brain, which was launched this fall to replace RGC’s decade-long run of dramatic productions. “The stat is one in every 25 students runs the risk of developing a gambling problem, so that’s why we’re out doing this. One of the things they say is know the risks now, so it helps you later. So that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Matthew Garrelhas, 18, was just one of about 20 CEHS students brought up to the stage Tuesday to buzz in against his classmates in a True or False faceoff. Some of the questions asked of the students in that challenge included: n Your chances of becoming the next Channing Tatum or Jennifer Lawrence are better than your parents’ chances of winning the lottery – which, Agnew explained, is true, due to the fact that the odds of becoming a movie star are one in 1.5 million, while the odds of winning the lottery are one in 14 million. n You’re more likely to overcome a zombie apocalypse than get help for a gambling problem – a statement which is false, Agnew said: “We don’t know what would happen with a zombie apocalypse, but a gambling problem you can get help for. That’s why
we’re here today.” n And, a person between 18 and 24 years old is in the age group that’s at the highest risk of developing a gambling problem – a statement Garrelhas said he was surprised to learn is true. “I didn’t know teens were more influenced by gambling,” he said. Kevin Noel, chief operating officer of the RGC – an independent non-profit organization dedicated to problem gambling prevention – said the pair were the right choice of hosts for Game Brain, which was designed to educate students in an engaging way about the realities of gambling, losses, signs of a problem, avoiding the risks and available help resources. Mayor Tory must look beyond inner circle to grasp city’s vast issues

t’s premature to start criticizing Mayor John Tory’s appointments – he’s only been on the job for four days, and having four deputy mayors is surely better than one. Right? At first blush, the selection of his second-in-command, North York’s Denzil Minnan-Wong, and the other three deputy mayors – Scarborough’s Glenn De Baeremaeker (east), Etobicoke’s Vincent Crisanti (west) and downtown councillor Pam McConnell (south) – seems balanced, however, a large swath of the city appears to be left without the ear of Toronto’s freshly minted mayor. It looks like the status quo is how Mayor Tory is approaching the start of the 2014 to 2018 Toronto City Council. Looking for experience was the key to the appointments, he said. This is not a bad thing; it’s our view shrewd taking into consideration most councillors are the same Experience ones who held those seats before guides mayor’s the election. The mayor is different, but appointments most of council has remained the same – how will Mayor Tory handle this when last term was often difficult? Despite words to the contrary, the left on council seem to be out of the mayor’s inner circle. Granted, De Baeremaeker is by no means on the right and McConnell is a dyed-in-the-wool NDPer, but they have been tasked with bringing issues from large parts of the city to the mayor. How can De Baeremaeker and McConnell bring the many issues of Scarborough and the downtown, respectively, to the fore? Scarborough is a huge area and the downtown core is a complicated part of the city. Tory’s executive committee seems a bit better, with more progressive-voting voices. We ask that Mayor Tory regulary revisit his choices as council progresses – see who is doing a great job, not just a passable job. Perhaps there is room for more names in his inner circle? His door should always be open to councillors who are not directly meeting with him on a regular basis. They deserve an ear (or two) – and through them their constituents – in order to be able to provide our freshly minted mayor a true understanding of the diverse city he is now responsible for ‘uniting’.

Is this the return of the long-extinct Red Tory?
W
e are at a peculiar moment in history, and we should all take a moment to savour it. For the first time this century, and in this province, the Red Tories are in power. It’s been a long time — properly, the until-now extinct breed of Progressive Conservative government last saw power in 1985, when former Premier Bill Davis left Queen’s Park and eventually Mike Harris’ hard-right Tories changed the conversation on the right, seemingly for good. Well, that’s all changed. On Tuesday afternoon at city hall, John Tory made it clear that the Red Tories are back, and will be running things in Toronto for the next four years. Just to make it clear, he brought along his old friend and onetime boss Bill Davis – still demonstrably capable of delivering the kind of blistering charm offensive that kept Ontario in the hands of the Tories for four decades

Davis and his predecessors maintained power by carefully balancing the needs of a post-war Ontario with its limitations, running as perfectly as they might up the middle of the political road: socially progressive and fiscally conservative. Also, as Davis put it afterwards to reporters, it doesn’t hurt to be a bit “bland.” Tory went to some lengths to make it clear that he’s taking more than a page from Davis’ playbook. In a lengthy inaugural address, Tory made brief mention of the need to find efficiencies in the budget and spent a lot of time speaking passionately about the need to mitigate the poisonous effects of income inequality, racial divisions and other ills that have divided the city.

“None of us can be satisfied with the snapshot that has emerged in recent years, of a city unfairly and unjustly divided by income, class and geography. None of us can rest easy knowing that 150,000 Toronto kids are growing up in poverty — or that 15 neighbourhoods have poverty rates of 40 per cent or more,” Tory said. Listening to Tory speak, after hearing from antiviolence advocate Louise Russo talk from her wheelchair, about the importance
of bringing council together, it was impossible not to contrast the event with former mayor Ford’s inaugural, where he snickered while Don Cherry told “pinkos” on council how they’d better watch out because there was a new guy in town. The new guy this time went out of his way to avoid such provocations, even as he laid out some challenges, to work together to deal with Toronto’s problems in a clear-headed and nonideological way. It remains to be seen whether this old-fashioned approach to politics will yield anything other than more of the same. But it’s an optimistic note on which to begin things. Paramedics want you to know when you should, and should not call 911
Make the Right Call campaign asks people to consider all of their health care options cynthia reason safe in the city

aving chest pains, trouble breathing, uncontrollable bleeding or suffering a traumatic injury? Don’t hesitate – call 911 immediately. But if simply suffering flu or cold symptoms, fevers, cuts, sprains or any other relatively minor ailment, you may wish to heed the advice of a new public information campaign recently launched by To r o n t o Pa ra m e d i c Services, asking residents to stop, consider their options, and, most importantly, “make the right call.” Running until the end of December, the Make the Right Call campaign is one Toronto Paramedic Services Chief Paul Raftis said is designed to educate the public about the healthcare alternatives available to them in non-emergency situations – whether that be seeking medical advice from the registered nurses on-call around the clock at Telehealth Ontario’s 24/7 telephone line; visiting any one of the 2,720 walk-in clinics in Toronto; or simply booking an appointment with a family physician. “We wanted to get the campaign set up right before the flu season, because we and the whole health-care system see a big spike across December and into January, so we’re trying to mitigate some of that emergency call volume,” Raftis said, noting that Toronto’s highly trained paramedics respond to more than 250,000 emergency calls a year (or about 685 calls a day). “Since 2005 we’ve seen a really big spike with the aging population – we’ve actually transported about 60,000 new patients every year since then – so it’s a very, very high

call volume.” Many of those callers, however, are simply not aware they have options other than calling 911 for non-medical emergency situations, Raftis said. While calling 911 for an ambulance essentially means callers receive a mobile emergency room staffed by highly trained paramedics at their doorstep, that kind of service is not always necessary for minor medical problems – and doing so can often needlessly divert paramedic resources from responding more quickly to real medical emergencies. “It takes some ambulances out of service, when they’re servicing calls that maybe we don’t need to,” Raftis said. “It’s probably a few thousand calls a year, but those few thousand calls, if we were able to, we’d be able to service emergency calls more quickly if we weren’t tied up
Options for non-medical emergencies 1. Call Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000 for a free, confidential telephone service offering up health advice and/ or general health information from a registered nurse. For residents coming down with the flu, for example, calling Telehealth Ontario may be a good option for quick advice on how to manage the illness. For more information go to www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/programs/telehealth/ 2. A visit to the family physician is another good option for those suffering relatively minor aiments. For those residents who don’t currently have a family doctor, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care offers up responding to those (nonemergency situations).” That said, the Make the Right Call campaign – which has been translated into 10
an online Health Care Connect Program at www.health.gov. on.ca/en/ms/healthcareconnect/public/overview.aspx to help connect them with a local doctor taking new patients. 3. Walk-in clinics are also excellent options for those looking to avoid a trip to the emergency room, but can’t wait for an appointment with their doctor. Walk-in clinics are a good option for when a family member has a cut, sprain or another relatively minor ailment and would like it seen by a medical professional. To find a clinic residents need only key-in their postal code at www.ontario.ca/locations/health/ different languages and is being advertised over social media, radio, TV and newspaper ads – isn’t about telling people not to
call 911 when they need to, but simply urging them to educate themselves about their health-care options, Raftis said. “It’s important to us that people know, if you have a serious medical emergency, don’t feel bad about calling 911. Call us, and we’ll have highly trained, highly skilled paramedics come and take care of you. We really want to focus on folks calling us when they have a serious emergency – and if they’re ever in doubt, they should always feel comfortable calling us,” he assured. “But if they just take that second to ask themselves, you know, ‘could this be dealt with better at a walk-in clinic or another route?’, that could be helpful to us.” To p s a m o n g s t t h o s e alternative options is calling Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000, a free, confidential, 24/7 telephone

tone for 23 years, said of Vignan: “The Queensmen finally have a Queen. She is a vibrant young musician; bright. She has brought an interesting perspective to us. We’re thoroughly enjoying her.” Jarvis said affording young men an opportunity to continue their passion for music after high school is among the group’s most-important missions.
“We’d like to have more men sing with us, particularly young men,” Jarvis said. “If they’ve done some music at school, this is a way to continue with music without going to university or becoming a professional musician.” The chorus has performed with chamber choirs, youth choirs and school orchestras, including John G. Orlando Corp. pledges $15M to Osler hospitals in match gift William Osler Health System has received the single-largest challenge match gift made to any community hospital in Canada. Orlando Corporation will donate as much as $5 million to each of Osler’s three hospitals – Etobicoke General, Brampton Civic and the new Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness. The company has pledged to match other donors’ gifts up to $15 million. Orlando President Phil King announced the recordbreaking challenge gift at Osler Foundation’s recent One Night Two Stars Three Hospitals benefit concert headlined by Tom Cochrane with Red Rider and Chantal Kreviazuk before 600 people at Brampton’s Rose Theatre. Minto promising to consult with residents on project >>>from page 1 ing – which they permitted to take place in the Kipling Grove gymnasium – they had nevertheless committed to meeting with GARA in the near future. “Minto has offered to meet with the executive at our convenience, to discuss any of the issues that come up tonight,” Copeman told meeting attendees last Thursday, urging them to come forward with their concerns about the imminent redevelopment of Kipling Grove School. “Our focus for this group, for this property, is to try to work with Minto and work with the City of Toronto... we want to work with them, and tonight we want to find out what the concerns of this group are – traffic, noise, water, sewage, all that kind of stuff.” While speculation as to Minto’s plans for the Kipling Grove site – for which the developer reportedly paid $18.1 million – ran rampant at the GARA meeting, Copeman
said that, as yet, the developers do not appear to have submitted any applications to the city to rezone the site. Given the price tag and the size of the site, however, he cautioned residents to be prepared for a high-density proposal from Minto. “The interesting thing is that the zoning that’s current for this property is equivalent to what’s on the other side of the street – so, in theory, Minto could replicate the Glen Agar area in here and have very little problem getting the permits to do that, outside of the sewage and water problems,” he said. “The trick is that it would be very difficult that way to get the density required to make it profitable. And that’s the big concern...They’ll have to put some density on this property to make any money.” In an interview with The Guardian, Minto’s director of land development, James Bujak, said Minto’s representatives are not yet prepared to

Ward 3’s new councillor Stephen Holyday, who also attended last Thursday’s meeting, commended the members of GARA for their forward thinking in forming a residents’ association and offered his assistance in getting the residents’ concerns heard. “Just like you, I want to see any changes that come to the neighbourhood change effectively and change responsi-
bly,” said Holyday, who, as a resident of Abinger Crescent, lives in the GARA catchment area with his wife and three young children. “This is an extremely important way to get your voice heard; it’s a way for you to channel your questions and concerns in an efficient manner. “What I’m here to tell you tonight is that my door is open to you as residents...I think this is the start of a long relationship. I’m happy to be here tonight and I’m happy to continue to be your neighbour in this area and to be your connection to city hall, so that you can get the information that you need and get the resources that you need.” In addition to Copeman’s election as GARA president, members of the residents’ association also elected George Chilakos as GARA’s secretary.

rts Etobicoke, Lakeshore Arts and the City of Toronto have partnered to present Dancing in The Third Act: a community dance project which will engage 12 Etobicoke seniors (6 female, 6 male) in an internationally
recognized dance production under the guidance of award-winning choreographer Randy Glynn. The production is a signature project for the City of Toronto’s Cultural Hotspot West: Etobicoke. Seniors involved DON’T NEED ANY PREVIOUS DANCE TRAINING, just a willingness to try and the ability to work as a team.
When & Where: FREE Workshops/rehearsals: March 9 to May 19, (3 hours, 3 times per week) Public performances: May 20, 21 & 22 Location: Silverthorn Collegiate Institute, 291 Mill Rd (near Burnhamthorpe) Requirements: Must be 60+, able bodied with an adventurous spirit ■ NO DANCE TRAINING REQUIRED ■ Available from March-May

Man, 76, suffers life-threatening injuries after collision Police are still investigating the cause of a collision on Scarlett Road Sunday that sent a 76-year-old man to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Officers responded to a call for a personal injury collision at Scarlett near Richview Road at 1:51 p.m. According to witness reports, the collision occurred when a 2005 Saturn Ion being driven southbound on Scarlett by an 84-year-old woman crossed, for reasons not yet determined, into the northbound lanes and struck a 1989 Cadillac DeVille head-
on. The driver of the Cadillac, a 76-year-old man, was transported to hospital with lifethreatening injuries. His passenger, a 66-yearold woman, and the driver of the Saturn were also taken to hospital, but with non-lifethreatening injuries. MEN ARRESTED IN SUMMER MURDER ◗THREE

On Saturday, Aug. 9, officers responded to The West Mall and Holiday Drive area at around 3 a.m. after receiving reports there was a physical altercation between a group of individuals taking place. Upon arrival, police found Yay suffering “life-threatening injuries”. He was later pronounced dead at the scene. Brent Nisula, 23, and Nicholas Brennan, 24, both of Toronto, and Brandon Wilson, 24, of Mississauga, were arrested in connection with the case and face seconddegree murder charges.

Workers’ coalition, Metrolinx meet over Union-Pearson Express A coalition of airport workers and transit advocates will meet on Thursday with a high-ranking Metrolinx official to discuss concerns for the Union Pearson Express (UPX) air rail link. UPX President Kathy Haley has agreed to sit down with representatives from the coalition, which includes the Toronto Airport Council of Unions, the Clean Train Coalition and TTCriders, a spokesperson for the group confirmed late last week. In addition to demanding fares comparable with the TTC for the service, the coalition wants to see UPX electrified and expanded beyond its initial four-stop route. Athlete of the month posts sizzling time in marathon debut Patricia Metivier, a longtime resident of Etobicoke and teacher at Etobicoke’s Michael Power/St. Joseph High School, has long been involved in the sport of running. But it was only this fall, she competed in her first marathon – with outstanding results. In her age category (45-49) in the Chicago Marathon, held Oct. 12, she was 35th overall in a time of 3:26:33. That’s not bad considering the mammoth marathon had more than 1,000 entries in that particular age category alone. She was the fourth fastest Canadian in the category and if the results were split among single ages, she would have been the third fastest women for her age. A family affair Coached by her husband Andre, training became a family affair. Along this journey she was supported by her nephew Matthew Turano, also a resident of Etobicoke, and her three children who at times would go for a run with their mom. “I was so impressed with Patti’s finishing time for her first marathon,” said Joanne Noble, chair of the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame, in a release announcing the athlete of the month. “She is a natural born runner and after having such a great experience with her first marathon, I’m sure the next one is in the near future.” The Athlete of the Month is sponsored by The Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame, Humber College, Canadian Tire – The Queensway and The Etobicoke Guardian. But you can help keep your street safe. In Etobicoke, the City ofToronto clears snow and ice from the sidewalks. In December and March, the city plows the sidewalk after eight cm of snow has fallen. In January and February, the city plows after five cm has fallen. If the snowfall is less than eight cm (in December and March), or five cm (in January and February), it's your responsibility to clear the sidewalk. So, Etobicoke – Be nice and clear the snow and ice from the sidewalks. It's the right thing to do.

Air cadet Ashley Eugine given top honours CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com An Etobicoke teen has been named Cadet of the Year by the Air Cadet League of Canada’s Ontario Provincial Committee (OPC). Warrant Officer 1st Class Ashley Eugine of Etobicoke’s 7 0 0 D a v i d Ho r n e l l VC Squadron was re-presented with the Brig.-Gen. Bob Robert Shield OPC Cadet of the Year award in front of her fellow cadets at Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School last month, after first being recognized with the honour during a ceremony at the OPC’s Annual General Meeting on Oct. 25. In a statement to Parliament two days later, Etobicoke North MP Kirsty Duncan praised Eugine and her fellow cadets in Etobicoke’s “outstanding” 700 Squadron. “Mr. Speaker, I celebrate each and every one of the extraordinary Royal Canadian air cadets in the 700 David Hornell VC Squadron,” she
said. “Warrant Officer 1st Class Ashley Eugine, a firstyear McMaster student who travels back every weekend to serve, was named Air Cadet of the Year from 8,500 air cadets in 114 squadrons, which is a tremendous achievement.” Duncan also noted several other 700 David Hornell VC Squadron members were also recognized at the OPC’s AGM, including: • Recently retired Warrant Officer 2nd Class Nikhil Peri, who now attends the University of Ottawa, received a Hamilton Flying Club Award as the top student pilot from this past summer’s Air Cadet Power Pilot Scholarship program; • Lt. Jack Tornabene, 700 Squadron’s Deputy Training Officer (and the father of a cadet), received a provincial Certificate of Merit; • And Maj. David S. Brown, commanding officer of 700 Squadron, received a Cadet Instructor Cadre Award of Excellence, of which only six

after Mimico-born Victoria Cross recipient David Ernest Hornell, a flight lieutenant during the Second World War. Hornell was on sea patrol near the Faroes in the North Atlantic on June 24, 1944 when his aircraft was attacked and badly damaged by a German U-boat. Hornell and his crew were nevertheless successful in sinking the submarine, after which Hornell managed to bring his burning aircraft down into the ocean. Hornell – blinded and weak from exposure and cold – was among the survivors rescued 21 hours later, but died shortly thereafter. He was awarded the Victoria Cross – the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces – posthumously.
