He doesn’t have a crown, or a sash, or a trophy to call his own. But anyone who knows photographer Ian Kelso, knows him as Mr. Etobicoke. After 40 years of shooting pictures for The Etobicoke Guardian, and its sister paper The Bloor West Villager, Kelso is retiring. “When news broke of Ian’s retirement, we were flooded with well wishes from the community,” said Grace Peacock, managing editor of The Etobicoke Guardian. “He was such an integral part of this newsroom, but even more so, an integral part of Etobicoke. It will be a strange thing not to have him representing the newspaper at events and assignments.” >>>KELSO, page 6

Etobicoke’s Urban Heroes honoured Eighteen recipients recognized for their positive impact in the community TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The Etobicoke Guardian’s seventh annual Urban Hero Awards were handed out on Monday evening at Old Mill Toronto. The award recognizes local residents, groups and busi-

Guardian news editor and awards’ night MC. The Etobicoke Guardian has honoured 122 Urban Heroes since the awards’ inception. Each spring, the newspaper solicits nominations from the public in search of outstanding examples of people who give

Teen to carry Pan Am torch for those kids being bullied Aras Janeliunas to carry flame on Day 38 of the relay CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com F o r E t o b i c o k e’s A r a s Janeliunas, being selected as a Pan Am torchbearer is as much about the opportunity to rise above the bullies of the world, as it is about the chance to proudly represent his country on an international stage. “I (applied to be a torchbearer because) I wanted to represent all those people who are being bullied, because I was bullied and I know what it feels like,” said the 13-yearold All Saints Catholic School grad. “I want to help spread awareness, because a lot of teens are getting bullied to this day – and there’s a lot of suffering to that.” Aras is slated to be the first torchbearer on Day 38 of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Torch Relay, departing the Ken Cox Community Centre on the Father John Redmond Catholic School grounds in south Etobicoke at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7.

All Saints grad Aras Janeliunas will carry the Pan Am Games’ torch on July 7 at 11:30 a.m.

“I’m looking forward to running down there and feeling proud that I’m showing people who are getting bullied that they are good people, and that they can do anything – no matter what anyone says about them or does to them,” Aras said. On hand to cheer him on in that pursuit will be a large contingent of supporters from All Saints, said Grade 8 teacher Andrew Bressan. “I’ll be there, and all the

staff that have worked with Aras over the years want to come down and see him, too,” he said. “And we’re going to have a whole bunch of students come down, as well, on that day to check it out.” Describing Aras as a quiet, hard-working and unassuming student “with a great inner strength”, Bressan said Aras’ classmates and teachers alike were pleasantly “shocked” to hear of his upcoming step in to the spotlight.

“It’s absolutely amazing,” added All Saints’ Acting Principal Lili Vani. “It’s an honour to have a student chosen from All Saints to participate and be a direct part of the Pan Am Games.” Also scheduled to appear in Aras’ cheering section on July 7 are “lots of Lithuanians”, Aras boasted, as well as many family friends.

Metrolinx report puts pressure on Mayor John Tory and Toronto council

T

here are a couple of ways to look at the new report from Metrolinx that draws attention to the need for a downtown relief subway line, for which no funding exists. One way is to see it as a stick with which to hit the Toronto-council-supported Scarborough subway extension and Mayor John Tory’s proposed SmartTrack system: one a project that is unnecessary, the second a project that will only provide short-term relief; and both, unlike the relief line, close to fully funded. The Metrolinx report, Yonge Relief Network Study, was released in June, but Tory and council have had access to countless other opinions and studies indicating the Yonge subway line is running over capacity and a relief line looping down from the

david nickle the city Bloor-Danforth line and possibly points north is the cure. The study lays it out in starker terms. Toronto and Metrolinx have made some headway in mitigating the crowding on the Yonge line. The automatic train control and new, roomier trains help, as does the GO Regional Express plan that will form the backbone of Tory’s SmartTrack proposal. That will meet needs over the next 15 years. Past that, we’re all back in the same swamping boat. Given all that, one might call Toronto’s political leadership for being short-sighted and pandering – funding inadequate short term transit plans at the expense of a long-

term solution. That is a legitimate call. But the only call that follows from that is a “throw the bums out” movement, and there are three years before anyone can even think about that. In the meantime, the call from Metrolinx points to another difficult choice. If the city really wants to pay for a short subway line in Scarborough and a multi-station build along the Regional Express line that runs very close to that subway, it must either resign itself to the hub of its entire transit system failing or else come up with a lot more money. It’s not inconceivable that council could do so. In the last term, council voted to raise property taxes to pay for a subway that would serve only a small portion of the city. There is a greater pretext for doing so in the matter of the

Downtown Relief Line – in that all of the city loses out when the hub of the system crowds to the point of dysfunction. But on the subject of dysfunction, the politics won’t make it easy. The suburban-downtown rift that’s defined this city since amalgamation in the late 1990s is showing no sign of healing, and as council is constituted, suburban votes hold sway. But sooner rather than later, someone is going to have to make that choice. And once that’s done, we’re all going to have to start paying, and it will be considerably more than we would have with more rational and evidencebased leadership. Christ Church Mimico remains oldest Anglican congregation in Etobicoke denise harris history corner

T

he founding of Christ Church Mimico has been established as 1827 when it was recorded for posterity that the four children of John and Margaret Peeler – Joseph, William, Mary Ann and Charles – were baptized. This earned Christ Church Mimico the honour of being the oldest Anglican congregation in Etobicoke. It is known that the first services were conducted in the home of local miller John William Gamble. In 1832, Gamble donated land on Church Street (now Royal York Road) for the congregation’s first church building, a small frame chapel with a porch, belfry and white picket fence. Enclosed pews were rented to members for one shilling, three pence per quarter year. This congregation had only four rectors during its first 100 years. Rev. Thomas Phillips served as rector from 1827 to his death in 1849. He was succeeded by his assistant, Rev. Henry C. Cooper, followed by Rev. Francis Tremayne in 1877 and then by his son, Rev. H. O Tremayne, from 1919 until his death in 1934. Christ Church played the important role of “mother church” for seven other new Anglican churches in Etobicoke, supporting their development until they were large enough to become independent parishes. These churches

were St. Phillips in Weston, St. George’s in Islington, St. James in Humber Bay, St. Margaret’s in New Toronto, St. Agnes in Long Branch, St. Elizabeth’s on The Queensway and the Church of Atonement in Alderwood. In 1877, Christ Church Mimico’s first building was enlarged with the addition of a chancel. However by 1889 they had outgrown the frame church completely and for $5,000 built the larger church of red brick that you see in the photo. It was designed by the fledgling architectural firm of Charles Gibson and Henry Simpson. In 1956 the congregation needed more space and

demolished its first brick church, building a new one of yellow brick in a modernist style. Sadly, this building was seriously damaged in two fires, three months apart, in 2006. The congregation made the difficult decision to deconsecrate the church and demolish what remained of the building. The congregation then worshipped with St. James Church in Humber Bay, and in 2010 the amalgamated parish of Christ Church St. James was established.

>>>from page 1 And some of that praise came from Kelso’s photo subjects, who experienced Kelso’s love of props to get the right shot. “My best memory of Ian Kelso...was when he asked me to climb up a ladder to clean off one of the new signs on Browns Line,” said former councillor Irene Jones for wards 1 and 6. “I don’t know where the ladder came from but I know I climbed up pretty high to help him take the photo for the paper. I don’t know where he got his ideas from, but those were the good fun days.” His career started at the Liverpool Echo when he was 20 years old, following in the footsteps of his father, a photographer for the newspaper. The idea to come to Canada was borne in 1967 after a night of pints with some of his newsroom colleagues. Kelso and reporter Morris Simms decided

then and there they would try their luck overseas. He got the idea from photographing Brits boarding ships heading to Canada for a new life. The two lined up job interviews before they left – and within six months Kelso was hired by the Don Mills and Scarborough Mirror newspapers. After several years there, he began freelancing for The Toronto Sun and in 1975 landed a staff photographer’s position at The Etobicoke Guardian. At that time Ian had married his Canadian bride Paula and had a two-year-old daughter, Sarah. Daughter Heather would follow two years later. He’s photographed many celebrities throughout his career, including John Lennon and Yoko Ono and Queen Elizabeth who came for the opening of the Scarborough Civic Centre. “I’ve had fun. I’ve probably seen something like, maybe, eight publishers and probably seen something like 10 to 15

editors go through the doors over the years. I would say all of them actually have been great to work for. And the crew that we’ve got right now is great. I just love them all.” As for his plans for retirement, spending time with his two granddaughters Eva, 6, and Maya, 3, is definitely top of his list. “I have little projects I’ve got to do around the house. I have friends I want to go see, one of them being Morris that I haven’t seen in quite a few years....Hoping to do some travelling. We’re hoping to go to Cuba in a couple of week’s time.” Kelso said retirement will also include some rest and relaxation, though admitted, “I think my wife will have different ideas.”

NOTICE OF INTENT 22 – 32 NORFIELD CRESCENT EROSION CONTROL AND SLOPE STABILIZATION PROJECT CITY OF TORONTO Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) has commenced a study to address riverine and valley slope erosion for an area identified along a tributary of the Humber River following the July 8, 2013 severe storm event. The study area includes a section of Berry Creek behind five (5) residential properties on Norfield Crescent, in the City of Toronto. In 2014, TRCA carried out emergency slope stabilization works within a portion of the study area where ongoing slope failures and instability created an immediate risk to existing residential structures, including an active Toronto Water construction site at the toe of the slope in Berry Creek. This study will evaluate and identify the preferred solution to address instability along the remaining key sections of the watercourse and valley slope. The purpose of any proposed works is to provide long-term protection for essential structures including infrastructure and homes within the study area. This project is being planned in accordance with Conservation Ontario’s Class Environmental Assessment for Remedial Flood and Erosion Control Projects (amended 2013), the approved process for this type of undertaking. The process includes public and stakeholder consultation, evaluation of alternatives, and identification of measures to mitigate any adverse impacts. If you have any additional inquiries, or are interested in receiving further information related to this project, please contact the Project Coordinator by one of the methods below: Courtney Rennie, Project Coordinator, Engineering Projects Toronto and Region Conservation Authority 1 Eastville Avenue, Toronto M1M 2N5 Phone: (416) 392-9690 Email: crennie@trca.on.ca TRCA intends to proceed with this project pending the receipt of all necessary funding and approvals. Take precautions to protect your kids from drowning this summer

Children’s Health and Safety Association offers safety tips around water CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com

F

or students across Toronto, the countdown to summer has finally ended and two full months of fun in the sun have already begun. But before heading out on the boat or hitting the backyard pool or local beach, the Children’s Health and Safety Association (CH&SA) is urging parents to take heed of some water safety tips to help keep their kids safe while beating the heat this summer. “As a parent, the more prepared you are, the more you can enjoy your summer,” Veronika Bradley, editor for the Etobicokebased safety organization, writes in an online summer safety article at www. safekid.org For both boating and non-boating families alike, Bradley cautions that life jackets or personal flotation devices (PFDs) should be worn by all children when in, on or even just around the water. “Children have often drowned when they were playing near water and not intending to go swimming. (They) can fall or slip into water quickly and silently without adults being aware,” Bradley writes. “A life jacket can help keep your children safe until someone can rescue them.” To work properly, the CH&SA also cautions that all life jackets and PFDs need to be tested annually to ensure a proper fit, and that the zippers and buckles are in good working order: “Your child could slip out of a life jacket that is too big or not buckled up properly, so make sure the life jacket fits your child’s weight. Buckle it up every time, and use all of the

School is now out and the mercury is rising, which means many will be cooling off near water this summer. Here, Xavier (right) along with Andrew, and Marcel leave the dock for a morning of canoeing on the pond at the Humber Arboretum, while making sure to wear their life vests when on the water.

safety straps on the life jacket.” Just because a child is wearing a life jacket, doesn’t mean they don’t need to be monitored at all times around the water, Bradley adds, noting that drowning is one of the leading causes of death for Canadian children aged one to four years old. lifesaving skills In case of such an emergency, the CH&SA urges all parents to have at least some basic knowledge of lifesaving skills – and encourages all to register for emergency first aid and CPR courses through the Canadian Red Cross at www.bit.ly/1uUBY8a Other general safety measures that Bradley said parents should heed include:

n Ensuring that emergency rescue equipment, a first aid kit and a cellphone are kept close at hand at all times when out on or near the water; n Always making sure that backyard wading pools are emptied and stored upside down when not in use; n And establishing swimming rules with your children, such as: always swim with a friend or an adult; never dive into an area where they cannot see the bottom or are unsure of the depth of the water; always ensure a lifeguard is on duty before swimming at public pools or beaches; never swim near pool drains, pipes or other openings to avoid entrapment, etc. For those families with pools at home, both pool security measures (such

as fencing, gates, safety covers, etc) and proper chemical storage practices are issues that need to be addressed in order to keep everyone safe, Bradley cautions. “Ideally, fencing should be at least six feet high and completely surround the pool...and gates should be self-latching and selfclosing to ensure that the gate is not inadvertently left open,” she writes. “Also, remove any items that could be used by a child to climb over a fence to gain entry to the pool area...and remove any steps or ladders leaning from the ground to the pool when the pool is not in use, and keep these items locked away.” Other items that should be kept locked away include the various kinds of disinfectants, chemicals

and sanitizers used to control the growth of algae and bacteria in pools, hot tubs, spas, wading pools, and whirlpools. “Keep all chemicals out of reach of children and pets,” Bradley writes, noting that the lids to all chemical containers should be closed tightly when not in use, as inhalation of their fumes may lead to nose and throat irritation, coughing or even shortness of breath. “Store chemicals in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, preferably off the floor as recommended by the manufacturer.” Other CH&SA tips for handling of pool chemicals include: n Do not store your pool chemicals in the same location as other flammables; n Always add chemicals to water – never add

water to chemicals; n Never add chemicals to the pool water while swimmers are using the pool; n Always use the appropriate protective gear (i.e. safety glasses, gloves, and footwear) when handling pool chemicals; n Never mix pool chemicals together, as explosions, combustion, or fire can occur; n Always wash your hands thoroughly after using chemicals; n And last, but not least, never allow pool chemicals to get in contact with your eyes, nose or mouth. If they do, call your doctor or the 24-hour Ontario Poison Control Centre hotline at 1-800-268-9017.

Cheering for the team behind the team Chevrolet gives thanks to the volunteers at the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games By: Stephen K. Carlisle, President and Managing Director, General Motors Canada

This year, more than 250,000 people will arrive in our city to join us for The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, events which will inspire and engage generations of Canadians.

The athletes will be the stars of the Games. Their stories, their hard work and their victories are what move us to celebrate their achievements, to take pride in our hometown competitors and to recognize those from around the world.

Dominic Carabine Coach & Volunteer, Toronto

Congratulations

Dominic Carabine

Metroland’s Community Champion Dominic has been volunteering in the community for the past 10 years. He has coached and managed soccer and hockey teams with the Toronto Azzurri Soccer Club, Duffield Devils and St Wilfrid's Elementary School, with the commitment to build team spirit for all the children participating. He encourages all children to try their best and to respect each other's abilities. He fosters a “never give up” attitude while allowing the children to dream big and to pursue their goals. His dedication to the community while balancing work and family life has been a challenge, but he does it for all the children on their respective teams and for his own two children. He strongly believes his community involvement sets an example to his own children to give back to others in whichever way you can.

It’s also with pride that we welcome our neighbours to Toronto and its surrounding areas, because it’s our city, it’s our province and it’s our country. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our community, and we’re ready.

Supporting Our Volunteers At Chevrolet, we recognize that the 23,000 volunteers at this year’s Games are the engine that makes it all possible. We’re ready because of those volunteers. We believe in the power of possibilities and there’s an incredible potential in each of them. The hard work of our volunteers should be recognized. They are like the pit crew in a grueling race and they deserve our thanks for the early mornings, late nights and their unfaltering dedication. Four years ago, Chevrolet committed to being the official sponsor of the volunteers for the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. A commitment made out of respect for the volunteers own unfaltering commitment.

It was also a natural extension of Chevrolet’s long history of supporting Canadian sports. As the organizers have worked to shape the Games, we’ve worked alongside them to provide the support needed for our volunteers to make these Games the greatest they’ve ever been. This has meant providing Chevrolet vehicles to help the volunteers behind the scenes to prepare the field of play, to shuttle athletes to and from their matches, to enhance the spectator experience, and to participate in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. No matter how you enjoy the Games you’re likely to see these hardworking volunteers— but you should also think of the ones you don’t see, those integral to bringing the Games to life before a single race was run, before a single ball was thrown, and before any athletes proudly walked the Opening Ceremony to the applause of people from around the world. Take a moment to join us in thanking them.

Award recipients honoured for strengthening community >>>from page 1 Metroland Media Toronto, which publishes The Etobicoke Guardian, noted the company has grown its Urban Hero program, which originated in Etobicoke, to highlight the accomplishments of people in North York and Scarborough. “There seems to be no shortage of good work happening here, and as a community organization, this is exactly what we stand for. Celebrating the people and groups that strengthen our neighbourhoods and stand as

inspirations for us all.” The Guardian recognized Urban Heroes in the following seven categories.

ARTS AND CULTURE

MABELLEarts received the night’s first honour for its work connecting more than 1,000 residents of the highrise central Etobicoke neighbourhood through accessible arts initiatives, and making the local park a cultural hub. Mary and Bill Wilson won for

organizing jazz concerts for the past 20 years that fundraised more than $50,000 for local groups, including Youth Without Shelter, Women’s Habitat, Out of the Cold, LAMP and Stonegate community health centres.

BUSINESS COBS BREAD Humbertown took the first of two business awards of the night for donating daily the entirety of its unsold, fresh bread products

MORE MONE Y FOR E VERY FAMILY WITH CHILDREN An increase of the Government of Canada’s Universal Child Care Benefit offers Canadian families: • $1,920 every year for each child under 6— an increase from $100 to $160 each month • $720 every year for each child 6 through 17— a new $60 per month! to local charities, like the Salvation Army, Franklin Horner Community Centre and breakfast and lunch programs at local schools. Courtesy Chevrolet won for fundraising $10,000 both of the past two years to send seriously ill children and their families to a Florida theme park in partnership with the non-profit charity, Make-A-Wish. Dealership staff plan to continue the program.

COMMUNITY The West Toronto Office of the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, Deborah Lombard Ryall, Krys Angel, Navaratnam Karunaratnarajah and Cara Wigle shared the honours in the awards’ community category. The Buddhist foundation’s volunteers provide winter clothing to Rexdale kids, donate hundreds of TTC tokens to women’s shelters and fund a literacy program for Somali youth. Most recently, it sent 10 volunteers to Nepal to aid earthquake disaster relief efforts. Lombard Ryall was recognized for providing full-time care for her 91-year-old friend after an accident. Angel’s extensive work at Franklin Horner Community Centre gained a nod. She is the centre’s chair, but does everything from flower planting to organizing the Christmas lunch, helping improve the building and training leaders in budgeting and strategic planning. Karunaratnarajah supports youth, women and seniors and runs an after-school and music program at North Kipling Community Centre as president of the Tamil Seniors Group of Etobicoke. Wigle won for her “giving spirit” in her work with St. Margaret’s Church’s Out of the Cold program serving meals, sewing, making cakes and finding gifts for Christmas dinner guests.

EDUCATION In education, Shobha Adore and Zlatka Boudakova took the honours. Adore is executive director of Braeburn Neighbourhood Place, which runs breakfast and after-school programs, a childcare centre and summer camp, a food security program and a community garden. Boudakova is a recently retired school board music teacher who taught at more than a dozen local schools in the past 20 years. Her students call her “a mentor through music, but also for life.”

ENVIRONMENT

Barbara Keaveney and Monika Meulman took the Urban Hero Award

in the environment category. Keaveney has organized the Citizens Concerned About the Future of the Etobicoke Waterfront bird walks for more than a decade, and now helps organize the annual bird festival in Colonel Samuel Smith Park. Last year, approximately 1,800 local students took part in a nature program in the park she initiated with the Humber Arboretum. Meulman is founder and chair of the Lakeshore Environmental Gardening Society, and called a “dynamic leader with natural, positive energy” by her nominators.

HEALTH AND SCIENCES Anthony Aquan-Assee, Jennifer Churchill and William Roland were named in the health and sciences category. Aquan-Assee volunteers every weekend at the neuro-trauma intensive care unit at St. Michael’s Hospital. He gives back to the medical team who saved his life 18 years ago when he suffered a traumatic brain injury in a motorcycle accident. As Home Instead Senior Care education co-ordinator, Churchill trains caregivers supporting loved ones at homes, and also trains caregivers in the community for free. At age 70, Roland suffered a heart attack, a jaw bone infection and a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Eight months later, he completed the Rome Marathon in seven hours as a member of Team Diabetes. Since, he has run five marathons and raised more than $85,000 for the Canadian Diabetes Association.

SPORTS Jay Mandarino and Stan Palmateer scored in the sports category. Police investigating shooting near Dixon highrise A 21-year-old man was rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds to the leg following an early morning altercation outside a north Etobicoke apartment complex Monday. Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu said police responded to the area of 340 Dixon Rd. at 2:22

a.m. on June 29 after receiving reports of the sound of gunshots in the area. Once on the scene, officers located the victim with gunshot wounds to the leg. Sidhu said “multiple men” – one wearing a red hoodie – were seen fleeing the area toward 320 Dixon Rd. follow-

ing the shooting. No other suspect descriptions were available. The investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416808-2300 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477). – Cynthia Reason

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

New Contract for Waste Collection begins Wednesday, July 1 in Etobicoke

It’s almost a shame this technology isn’t more visible! The new designRITE and Invisible-In-the-Canal (IIC) hearing aids are smaller and more beautiful than ever, striking the perfect balance between size and performance. The elegant and highly discreet designRITE hearing aid fits perfectly on top of your ear, and the thin tube in your ear canal is designed to disappear against your skin. The new IIC hearing aid--now with wireless technology--provides all of the outstanding features and benefits you want in a digital hearing aid, minus the stigma that came with wearing one in the past.

Mobile app lets riders buy TTC pass Residents will soon be able to purchase a TTC day pass with their smartphones. Starting next week, The TTC will make available a mobile application, TTCconnect, for download which will make it possible for riders to purchase group or single day passes on their phones using a credit card. Unlike paper passes which go into effect at the time they’re bought, you can prepurchase your ticket and activate it via the app up to a year after the pass was bought. And you can purchase and activate up to 20 passes. The app will be available for iOS and Android users to start, but the TTC says Blackberry and Windows phone users could be added to the list in the future.

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT verdict from drivers was less than flattering. On Monday, June 29, the first day of enforcement, jamups were reported on major roadways such as Hwy. 401 and Don Valley Parkway. The OPP was kept busy handing out $110 tickets to singleoccupant vehicles improperly using the lanes. You need to have a special Games pass or have at least three people in your vehicle, reduced to two persons at the end of July, to legally use the lanes. releases UP rider numbers wmetrolinx

One month in and ridership of the Union Pearson (UP) Express air rail link appears to be within Metrolinx’s forecasts. The provincial transit planning agency unveiled the four-stop train connection between Union Station and

Toronto Pearson airport in early June. Despite reports of empty trains on its first day of service Saturday, June 6, UP President Kathy Haley told Metrolinx’s board of directors last week the line is averaging 2,250 riders per day. This projects favourably to the stated goal of having 5,000 daily riders on average by the end of the link’s first year of operation. repairs 141K potholes this year wCity

The City of Toronto released its latest statistics for pothole repairs last week and it would appear the numbers remain high. According to available figures posted by the city’s winter operations division, the city averages 237,000 pothole fills a year. So far this year it’s at 141,693, a number which includes 4,519 filled potholes during the week of June 15-19. Rahul Gupta is The Guardian’s transit reporter. His column appears every Thursday. On Christmas Eve 2009, scaffolding holding workers at 2757 Kipling Ave., broke. Four workers plunged 13 floors to their deaths and one other was critically injured.

Project manager found guilty in Christmas Eve scaffolding collapse The project manager involved in Etobicoke’s deadly scaffolding collapse on Christmas Eve 2009 has been found guilty on five criminal charges. Vadim Kazenelson, who was tasked with overseeing the construction crew, was convicted Friday, June 26, on four counts of criminal negligence causing death and one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm. Alexander Bondorev, 25, Aleksey Blumberg, 33, Fayzulla Fazilov, 31, and Vladimir Korostin, 40, plummeted 13 storeys to their deaths when the highrise scaffolding they were working on at 2757 Kipling Ave. snapped in half and collapsed. None were connected to a safety lifeline. A fifth worker, then21-year-old Dilshod Mamurov, who was not secured properly to his lifeline, clung briefly to the broken equipment before falling and suffering broken legs and a broken spine. Shohruh Tojiddinov, who was properly con-

nected to his harness, survived unharmed. He testified in court that, as project manager, Kazenelson didn’t insist crew members be attached to lifelines. He also testified Kazenelson asked him to lie about the incident afterward. Court previously heard that Kazenelson himself managed to hold onto a 13th-floor balcony when the swing stage split in two. The construction company involved in the case, Metron Construction Corp., pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death and was eventually fined $750,000 plus a victim surcharge, the first time in Ontario the Criminal Code had been used to hold a company responsible for a worker’s death. The company that supplied the swing stage, Ottawa-based Swing N Scaff Inc., was fined $350,000 for failing to ensure the platform was in good condition. – files from TorStar News Service

ABELLEarts’ mission is to tell the stories of the people living in the community. Located in the heart of the Mabelle neighbourhood, its work is centred around the Mabelle Park which is surrounded by four Toronto Community Housing highrises as well as three marketrent highrises. With 80 per cent of its residents being newcomers to Canada – MABELLEarts continues to transform its creative agenda to reflect the diverse backgrounds of the people it services. “What we try to do is learn more about the cultural forms that are present in our community and bring those forms to our work,” said Leah Houston, artistic director for MABELLEarts (seen here). MABELLEarts works directly with more than 1,000 Mabelle residents of all ages, abilities and backgrounds through its ongoing projects and events. “Our mission is to create

a cultural experience that anyone would want to be part of,” Houston said. Inclusivity is at the centre of the work MABELLEarts does. Its primary goal is to bring together artists, elders, writers, designers, meal-makers, seed planters, architects, performers, carpenters and others from Mabelle and other places to create an environment of creativity, civic engagement and even paid employment. The organization is aware that many people can be left

out – unintentionally – due to factors out of their control; be it language, mobility and food insecurity. It goes out of its way to offer free activities, food, childcare, transportation and translation. MABELLEarts developed out of a four-year residency of its predecessor Jumblies Theatre. MABELLEarts was founded in March 2007 with support from area residents, and has collaborated with hundreds of residents and creators to transform Mabelle Park.

ary and Bill Wilson love their jazz. Twenty years ago the couple met at Royal York United Church and have been inseparable ever since. A second marriage for both of them, Mary and Bill found they were compatible in many different ways, with serving their community and church landing at the top of the list. The couple is credited for bringing fundraiser jazz concerts to the church community and city at large. Over the past two decades, the concerts have raised more than $50,000 with many local organizations benefitting from those funds, including: Youth Without Shelter, Women’s Habitat, Out of the Cold, LAMP and Stonegate Community Health Centre. A lover of all genres of music including classical and big band, Bill says it was he who brought jazz music into the relationship. Some of the best professional jazz musicians have been hired to perform at the church’s concerts. On average, about 150 to 175 people from across Toronto attend the concerts, with the biggest draw being about 300 music lovers who came out to hear the late Jeff Healey perform. Mary and Bill have been

long-standing members of the Toronto Duke Ellington Society, helping to promote jazz in the city and support young jazz musicians through scholarships at the University

of Toronto, York University and Humber College. Bill a retired teacher and Mary a retired nurse, have five children and nine grandchildren between them.

COBS BREAD Humbertown Giving back to the community with baked goods

t COBS BREAD Humbertown, being a community bakery is about more than being number one – it’s about giving back. Each and every night, baker y manager Tanya Kazdan and her “wonderful” staff package up all of the day’s fresh-baked, unsold bread products for pick-up by one of numerous local charities that benefit weekly from COBS’ company-wide End of

Day Giving program. “With COBS BREAD as a whole, each bakery tries to give away $1,000 worth of retail product every night – everything from loaves of bread, to buns, to cinnamon buns and danishes,” Kazdan said. “Whatever is left, we do not keep anything. All of the leftover product that is baked during the day is given to charity at the end of the night.” In fact, since opening its first store in 2003, COBS BREAD has donated more than $15 million in bread to local charities, and today aims at giving away $1 million in

Community Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation – West Toronto Office Working to create a ‘more loving society’

Giving of oneself to care for a friend

D

T

he Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation may be an international organization, but in Toronto, it has a local heart. More than 100 volunteers in the West Toronto branch serve the community with four missions in mind: compassion, medicine, education and humanities. It’s part of their goal to get immigrants engaged in their neighbourhoods by helping others, said member Theresa Liao, who added that they often encourage new Canadians to get involved by setting up a booth at the Peel Region Citizenship Court. While Buddhism drives their work (it’s important in the faith to practice good deeds), their acts of service are not bound by religion, race, or age. “We have mutual respect no matter whoever they are,”

Deborah Lombard Ryall

Liao said. “We want to create a more loving society.” Founded nearly 12 years ago, the group has gone above and beyond with their work, providing winter clothing to kids in Rexdale, donating hundreds of TTC tokens for women in shelters, and helping fund a literacy program for Somali youth, to name a few. Recently, they sent 10 volunteers to help with Nepal

earthquake relief. They consider their biggest challenge finding new partnerships and more people and communities to serve. The branch also extends to communities such as Waterloo, Kitchener and St. Catharines. ”They are a very quiet, inclusive group not about converting people, but just practicing Buddhism in the simplest form,” said former volunteer Sue Huang.

eborah “Debbie” Lombard Ryall is a modern-day Good Samaritan. After suffering an accident that kept her from work, Lombard Ryall was immersed in a new community of friends – women, decades older than her – whom she would end up playing euchre with while she recuperated. She especially connected with one woman, a 91-yearold named Mona, who she often went on grocery runs for or enjoyed a cup of tea with. It wasn’t until Mona was admitted into urgent care after a fall requiring stitches in her head, that Lombard became fully immersed in the senior’s life, staying with her in the hospital, cooking her meals, and helping her however she could. What began as a casual friendship became full-time care for her friend. “She kept telling me

there was no one else,” said Lombard Ryall on the incident that happened a year ago, “She really needed help and I just couldn’t say no,” she said. Mona is now in a nursing home, but Lombard Ryall still visits her. “It has been a real joy getting to know Mona,” said Lombard Ryall, hoping that her work can inspire others

to serve seniors. “There is a disconnect with older folks and their contributions, but they still have a lot to offer,” she said. Lombard Ryall’s sister, Shelia Martin, is in awe of her selfless service. “She has a good rapport with people no matter who they are. She volunteers her time and doesn’t expect anything in return,” Martin said.

Krys Angel An invaluable part of Franklin Horner CC

A

s chair of the popular Franklin Horner Community Centre, Krys Angel isn’t just a figurehead; in fact, she kind of does it all. Members say you can find her cooking a turkey at an annual luncheon, taking pictures as the “resident photographer,” or organizing the Christmas Day dinner along with her administrative duties. That’s a lot to take on while managing more than 400 volunteers and nearly 1,200 members. “She does all this day-to-

day work and kind of goes under the radar,” said volunteer co-ordinator Navina Dey. As an avid gardener and member of the Etobicoke Horticultural Society, Angel began her relationship with the centre after planting flower beds in the front area of the centre. There, she began engaging with the members and eventually joined the board of directors. The retired project manager was eager to get the building into better shape, put visitor feedback into practice, and train leaders with budget and strategic

planning skills. “I’m proud of how I got people to work together and pull together a good team,” Angel said. What once was a building with little security became fully lit, accessible, and equipped with an alarm system under her leadership. It’s the practical steps and upgrades that Angel reflects upon, as she arrives at the end of her seven-year term. “Sometimes I’m surprised that all this time has passed, but looking back I knew there was a lot to build,” Angel said.

erving the Tamil community in Etobicoke is a ver y personal matter for Navaratnam Karunaratnarajah. After losing his father and seeing his family struggle, Karunaratnarajah was determined to change the lives of Tamil families, especially women in Canada. He was passionate about equipping seniors to live independently, and served as the president of the Tamil Seniors Group of Etobicoke for the past seven years. He was previously rec-

ognized for his efforts with an Ontario Volunteer Ser vice Award in 2012. Karunaratnarajah is also passionate about supporting youth. After witnessing some of the highest crime rates in his community, Karunaratnarajah began running an afterschool program in the North Kipling Community Centre. Specifically, he began a small music centre where kids are off the streets and learning an instrument. Karunaratnarajah also spends time coaching a cricket team and as an

enthusiastic former athlete, is encouraging youth in the community to volunteer for the Pan Am Games. But his compassion extends beyond the city. He encouraged community members to sponsor orphaned children in his native Sri Lanka. “The hope in their eyes is amazing,” said his nominator, who wanted to remain anonymous. And once you’ve been in for a while you know that we can all be there,” Wigle said. Wigle also possesses other talents, including sewing, cake making, and finding gifts for members during the annual Christmas dinner. She said the stories she’s heard and experiences she’s shared working with volunteers for the past decade have far outweighed what she puts into it. “People really don’t have the suppor t and being knowledgeable about the community is never a bad thing,” Wigle said.

Education Shobha Adore Offering Braeburn youth a helpful hand up

E

xecutive director of Braeburn Neighbourhood Place (BNP) Shoba Adore likens the work she does to a relay race. Adore says in 1974 a group of women who were living in the new social housing development in Rexdale came together with a vision for their neighbourhood – and their children. “Families were isolated at that time and there was no public transit. At that time a group of women came together to envision what the community needed,” Adore

said. “Little by little over the years, that vision got passed on from generation to generation,” much like a relay. The founders of Braeburn Neighbourhood Place, with the assistance of 23 Division, the local school board and the Children’s Aid Society, knew that if they taught people skills, those skills would be passed on and a foundation of stability would be built. Adore said the first lessons to be taught 41 years ago were typing and pottery. The vision for the United Way member agency has expanded exponentially in

the last four decades. There is a breakfast and after-school program at Braeburn Junior School, as well as a child-care centre and summer and March Break camps. The Elms Junior Middle School hosts an afterschool program as well as a summer school readiness program for children entering kindergarten. Thistletown Collegiate Institute also provides a lunch and learn program as well as an after-school program. There is also a community garden and food security program.

latka Boudakova has touched the lives of countless budding young musicians over the course of her 20-year career teaching instrumental music at schools across Etobicoke, Recently retired from the Toronto District School Board, the native Bulgarian was praised by her past pupils for being an “unforgettable teacher and inspiring mentor” – both in the classroom and in the private tutoring practice she still runs out of her East Mall condo. “She’s the kind of teacher for whom you would always want to work harder,” said

former student Swapna Mylabathula, who along with twin sister Sandhya, is a violinist with the Etobicoke Philharmonic Orchestra. The Mylabathula sisters both took private violin lessons from Boudakova during high school and credit her encouragement for their musical success. “She’s the reason we’re still playing. She always instilled an excitement about what we were learning – whether it was something new, something we were revisiting, or something really difficult,” Swapna said. “She became a mentor

through music, but also for life. She set a wonderful example in caring for her students and always went above and beyond what a teacher would be expected to do.” For her part, Boudakova – who taught most recently at Bloorlea, Albion Heights, Greenholme, Beaumonde Heights public schools – said teaching violin and piano has always been her passion. “I love to give (my students) the love of the instrument for them to enjoy. I am pretty strict sometimes, but they never complain,” she laughed.

iophilia, or the theory that the human body is genetically predisposition to be near nature is what inspires Monika Meulman, the creative face behind the Lakeshore Environmental Gardening Society (LEGS). Meulman has always loved plants, and continues to share her knowledge with others as chair of the group with events such as Seedy Sunday, a community seed exchange. Meulman started

the group nine years ago, and now there are about 40 active members. From planting school gardens and parks and finding other places to add a lively touch of green in Etobicoke, Meulman and her LEGS team look for ways to engage the community and recycle environmental materials. “She has such a natural positive, energy,” said LEGS member Debbie Wagdin. “She’s also a dynamic leader and makes sure

people feel welcome.” For Meulman, it’s the level of surprise that keeps her motivated to do her work. “It’s nice to know that we can label plants and their growing patterns, but they will always manage to do what they want,” Meulman said. Aside from gardening, Meulman enjoys many outdoor activities, including playing sports, camping, and running an apothecary with her own handmade oils.

arbara Keaveney’s passion for teaching reaches beyond her four decades in an Etobicoke classroom to spearheading environmental education along the waterfront. The Alderwood woman has been with Citizens Concerned About the Future of the Etobicoke Waterfront (CCFEW ) since 2001 when she read an article in The Guardian about bird walks in Col. Samuel Smith Park. Her then 14-year-old son found fellow bird enthusiasts on the walks. Soon after, Keaveney was organizing them. Today, there are 193 differ-

ent bird species on CCFEW’s bird checklist. “The interest is growing and growing,” said Keaveney of the park’s annual bird festival she helps organize. It is now in its sixth year. “At first, people thought it was just for birders. But it’s for anyone who wants to get out and see and walk the park,” she said. “Mainly, it’s to get people into the park.” Col. Samuel Smith Park is a rare naturalized waterfront park at the foot of Lake Shore Boulevard West and Kipling Avenue, little-known beyond area residents. Keaveney sits on its stew-

ardship organization, Friends of Sam Smith Park. Debbie Wagdin nominated Keaveney for an Urban Hero Award for her “enormous impact” on environmental education of the public, and local school children. “Barbara uses her quiet determination to bring her love of nature to countless members of the public and thousands of school children,” Wagdin said. Four years ago, Keaveney reached out to Humber Arboretum staff to encourage them to offer their nature programs in the park. Last year, 1,800 local elementary students took part.

or Jay Mandarino, skateboarding served as a vehicle to selfconfidence during an often troubled childhood. Now, years later, the successful businessman and founding president of Etobicoke’s CJ Skateboard Park and School is using the sport to instill that same sense of empowerment in kids of all abilities. “With skateboarding, I learned self-confidence and changed my whole life around,” said Mandarino, who was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia after attempting suicide at age eight. “I had no self-esteem; I couldn’t read or write; and I was told I was stupid and laughed at everyday. Luckily, I had very supportive parents who sold their home and sent me to a special school in the states, where I learned to skateboard...now I own 23 companies – six of them philanthropic.” Parlaying his personal successes into opportunities to help children has remained one of Mandarino’s top priorities – especially through his skateboard park, the fourth largest indoor facility of its kind in the world. Whether through CJ’s “extremely discounted” programs for children with

tan Palmateer is an ace in tennis and in helping Canadians living with heart disease or stroke. The Mimico native and tennis pro will serve his 26th annual 24-hour Tennis Marathon this August. It has raised approximately $125,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation since its 1989 inception. Palmateer conceived his marathon matches as a onetime community fundraiser after a close family member developed heart disease,

and a member of his Mimico Tennis Club died. Decades later, Palmateer said he still loves it. “I have generous, eager friends. Since it began, people now sign up a year in advance. Some of my friends love to play at 4 a.m. for some bizarre reason,” he said, laughing. “People seem so enthusiastic about it. They make it easy for me.” Every seven minutes, a person in Canada dies of heart disease or stroke, Statistics Canada 2011 indicated.

Yet today, most Canadians who suffer a heart attack will survive thanks to groundbreaking research. “(In the 1950s and ’60s) those who made it to hospital after a heart attack, 30 to 35 per cent did not survive. Today that number is down to five per cent,” reported David Sculthorpe, CEO of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. “Or put another way, 95 per cent of Canadians who have a heart attack will now survive — thanks to research,” he said.

autism, ADHD, Asperger’s and Down Syndrome, or through the Kids Being Kids program – which sees Mandarino invite families of children battling cancer to the skateboard park for a free day of fun activities – Mandarino loves seeing the impact skateboarding makes in the lives children who sometimes struggle. “The biggest thing about

skateboarding is that you’re not competing against anybody and it’s not as structured as other sports – so there’s more freedom, which kids love,” he said. “Skateboarding empowers kids, no matter what their challenge, and gives them an amazing sense of accomplishment. As a confidence builder, it’s unbelievable.”

Canadian Tire Jumpstart® Strong communities include strong kids. We believe all kids should have the chance to run, skate, play, and grow. Canadian Tire Jumpstart® is a community-based charitable program that helps kids aged 4-18 participate in organized sports and recreation such as hockey, dance, soccer and swimming, so they can develop important life skills, self esteem and confidence. National in scope but local in focus, Canadian Tire Jumpstart® delivers support to children in financial need through a Canadian-wide network of local chapters. These chapters are made up of a variety of community leaders committed to helping kids get active, such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters Canada, YMCA, and Parks and Recreation. These community partners are joined by Canadian Tire Dealers and Petroleum Agents, and together the chapters identify children in financial need who would benefit from the program. To date, there are 279 Canadian Tire Jumpstart® chapters in communities across the country. Since its launch in February 2005, Canadian Tire Jumpstart® has helped give more than 176,546 kids in financial need the chance to play.
