ESCAPING THE TRAP:

COMING UP WITH A CO-ORdINATEd STRATEGy TO COMBAT HUMAN TRAFFICKING miKE ADLER AND fANNiE SuNSHiNE newsroom@insidetoronto.com The young man stands before the judge, barely crossing the age threshold of being tried in adult court. Charges against him are lengthy and grim: a snippet includes forcible confinement, uttering threats, sexual assault, and human trafficking.

Police know the human trafficking charge will be the hardest one to land a conviction on, mainly due to the victim’s unwillingness to testify or memory lapses, and will often take pleas for lesser offences. The total number of human trafficking convictions in Toronto since 2014 now stands at nine; in the first week of July alone, Toronto police arrested seven men within a four-day

span on human trafficking charges, one case involving a victim as young as 14. And one York Region cop has no problem dropping human trafficking charges if it means pimps will land in jail. “It doesn’t mean they all walk, they all got away,” said Det. Sgt. Pokémon Go players try to ‘catch ’em all’ More than 1,000 attend official Canadian launch party at the base of the CN Tower KELSEY CHENG kcheng@insidetoronto.com Marina De La Peña remembers playing and watching Pokémon when she was little. Now at the age of 20, she never thought she’d be meeting over a thousand people that shared a collective memory of Pokémon – at the same time. “I g re w u p w i t h Pokémon – I ‘ve watched all of the anime and played most of the games,” said De La Peña, who gathered at the base of the CN Tower on Monday night with her brother Rodrigo and many other Pokémon Go players to celebrate the official release of the game in Canada. “I am so happy about this launch because I get to meet people who love what I love. It’s brilliant.” The launch of the game was particularly special to De La Peña, who was inspired by

Pokémon to study animation at Max the Mutt college in Toronto from Mexico. She said the augmented reality aspect is what draws her to the new game. “Pokémon has always been about travelling,” she said. “Now, you get to explore the city while playing the game and you get to meet new friends along the way. It’s a really positive experience.” The highlight of the evening was when a life-sized Pikachu mascot showed up, attracting >>>players, page 20

Humber Bay residents rely on ‘Third World’ transit: SETAC Councillor Mark Grimes says he wants to meet with developer First Gulf to negotiate transit hub on former Mr. Christie’s plant RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com With tens of thousands expected to take up residence in the Humber Bay Shores area, the time to build transit is now, says a local councillor. Mark Grimes had his motion supported by colleagues on Toronto Council last week calling for an immediate meeting with the owners of 2150 Lake Shore Blvd. at Parklawn Road, the site of a 27-acre parcel of land, formerly a Mr. Christie’s plant, which was recently snapped up by developer First Gulf. Grimes said he would like city staff, including the TTC, to meet with First Gulf to begin negotiations on designating part of the site for a future transit hub, which could include TTC and GO Transit connections. “My argument is let’s not wait, let’s sit down with (First Gulf) and see what we can figure out,” said Grimes this week. “My residents are screaming for transit.” Grimes, along with Ward 5 council colleague Justin Di Ciano, plus Etobicoke-Lakeshore MPP Peter Milczyn and MP James Maloney, are scheduled to meet with Metrolinx this week to discuss the agency’s decision to rule out, for now, a new GO Transit station at the proposed Parklawn site. The site was initially considered as part of GO’s Regional Express Rail (RER) expansion and electrification plan – intended to transform the commuter rail provider into a local service with train frequencies more in line with subway – but ultimately ruled out in part because of its proximity to the existing Mimico GO station.

Andrew Lahodynskyj/MetroLAnd

Mike Olivier of the South Etobicoke Transit Action Committee, who is photographed at the Humber loop last year, says congestion is only going to get worse in the area.

But with the recent Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) decision guaranteeing more intensification for Humber Bay Shores, that should be more than enough incentive to get going on new transit, Grimes said. “If the province is approving more density, they should be helping me out,” he said. “We’re dropping the equivalent of the population of Orangeville into the area within five years.” Mike Olivier of the South Etobicoke Transit Action Committee (SETAC) agrees.

“Traffic is only going to get worse and we’re going to have to move a lot of people,” said Olivier who, along with SETAC, successfully petitioned the city to study relocating the Humber streetcar loop, along with creating a dedicated right-of-way, from St. Joseph Hospital to Exhibition Place. “It’s not just Humber Bay Shores (that) is the issue,” he said. “All the way to Long Branch we currently rely on a Third World transit line.” Olivier understood Metrolinx’s decision to reject Parklawn given the tight timeline of the RER expansion,

which the province has promised to complete in less than 10 years. But he said expansion improvements currently underway at Mimico GO won’t end up helping the residents of Humber Bay Shores. “The local politicians see the need and so do the residents so where there’s the political will, there should be a way,” he said. Olivier was heartened by council signing off on creating a new Waterfront transit plan incorporating South Etobicoke, along with recent city consultations in regards

to King Street’s future configuration. He said at this point residents don’t have a choice but to wait for better service. In addition to negotiating for a new transit hub, Grimes said he would continue to push the city to implement “low-hanging fruit” like the streetcar improvements. But he acknowledged this fight is for the long term. “I’m 55 and going back 40 years there’s been no plan for transit,” he said. “It’s not going to happen overnight, but we need to do something soon.”

Toronto Council agrees to buy Thistletown Multi-Service Centre from school board DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com The Thistletown Multi-Service Centre will soon become a fully city-owned facility, as Toronto Council voted July 15 to use the last of its reserve fund allocated for acquiring school board property. The decision to go ahead with the Thistletown purchase means that

the many services operated out of the long-standing community hub in northern Etobicoke will have a secure home. “This facility is vital to the families, seniors and youth who live in Ward 1,” said Etobicoke North (Ward 1) Councillor Vincent Crisanti as council prepared to vote on the matter. “It’s also a critical piece of local history. It has been operating as a

community hub for more than 35 years. It houses the Rexdale Daycare Centre and Childcare Centre with close to 100 children. I can’t tell you how important the centre is and how relieved the community is that we’re protecting these programs.” The recommendation to purchase the TDSB site came in the midst of a larger report looking at how the city can ensure that school properties

that are surplus and need to be sold off in order to fund maintenance of other school properties remain as public places. With more than 20 such properties in play across the city, the policy seeks to find a way to retain the public space that the surplus schools currently provide. “When these schools close, our residents will come to us and they

will want and expect that we will buy them,” said Eglinton-Lawrence Councillor Josh Colle. “Part of this process has to be at the level of setting expectations. But there are opportunities where there might be a convergence of services that can go into these schools. In terms of the greenspace, we may have to look at changing the zoning on the greenspace.”

Laws to stop texting and walking would fall on deaf ears

WRitE uS

I

n hastily snatched hindsight, it’s fair to say that last week probably wasn’t the best time for Toronto Council to vote to ban texting while walking. The same time as councillors supported a motion by York South-Weston Councillor Frances Nunziata to ask the province to change the Highway Traffic Act making it illegal to text and otherwise distract yourself while walking, Torontonians were downloading the walking, distracted gaming app Pokemon Go to their smartphones. The provincial government, no doubt sensing trouble, made it clear that Toronto can make an antitexting bylaw if it likes, but really, should Toronto enact such a bylaw, compliance will be, to put it mildly, an issue. It’s not to say that pedestrians shouldn’t take some responsibilOuR ViEW ity for their own safety, or that streets aren’t safer when Council fails by Toronto everybody has their eyes on the not speeding road. But really: it doesn’t take a up plan trending gaming app to tempt reasonable adults to check their smartphone for texts, emails or just to make a change to the music they’re listening to, as they move around the city. And frankly, pedestrians aren’t the ones who are responsible for the genuinely deadly players on Toronto streets; the multi-ton motor vehicles that almost inevitably come out on top when collisions occur are. Nunziata’s motion came as Toronto Council was considering a broader, $80-million plan to make Toronto’s roadways safer. To councillors’ credit, they unanimously supported that plan, and bolstered it beyond its original scope. So over the next five years, speed limits will be reduced on key roadways in the downtown and beyond, more signalized crossings will be installed and slow-speed zones around schools will be implemented. All good – although it’s a shame that councillors didn’t support an amendment from another councillor, Kristyn Wong-Tam, to accelerate the so-called Vision from five years to two. That failure, and the scolding fingerwag of the amendment by Nunziata that council finally did support, inspires little confidence. While they were at it, they might have approved another bylaw – preventing dyspeptic amendments being passed late on the third day of summer council meetings, when legislators are clearly too tired to think straight.

Council leaves behind subways, spending for summer reprieve A quiet has descended on Toronto City Hall in the wake of last week’s marathon July council meeting. It seems almost peaceful. Councillors won’t be getting together again to disrupt that peace until September rolls around – and it would be nice to think that when they and Mayor John Tory meet once more, it will remain in a spirit of peace, and reconciliation. The debate over the Scarborough subway, after all, appears to be over. Whatever one thinks of the one-stop subway extension to the Scarborough Town Centre (coming in now at $3.4 billion and probably a good deal more), council decided on its second day of meeting that it was fine with the plan, and the expense. The fight, between critics like Josh Matlow and Gord Perks and boosters like Deputy Mayor Glenn De Baeremaeker and Tory himself, had been seismic until then.

david nickle the city When the vote finally came late in the day July 12, it wasn’t even all that close: just 16 councillors voted in favour of an amendment to scrap the subway plan and build light rail there instead, with 27 siding with Tory. It might have been closer, but Tory’s team made a point of rewarding its allies. In addition to the Scarborough subway’s continued approval, council also approved studies for no less than three additional transit projects not on any list but the ones on certain local councillors’ election literature. So in the coming months, we’ll hear about a westward extension of the Bloor-Danforth Line 2, from Kipling Station to Sherway Gardens (courtesy of Etobicoke Lakehsore Councillor Justin Di Ciano); a subway

connection between the Yonge-Sheppard interchange and Downsview Station (a long-held dream of York Centre Councillor James Pasternak); and a Sheppard subway extension from Don Mills Station to McCowan Road (championed by Scarborough Agincourt Councillor Jim Karygiannis). The studies aren’t, of course, anything approaching a commitment, but they are the sort of thing that has a limited but real effect of papering over possible divisions – both on council and inter-regionally. The Scarborough subway, now that it’s going ahead, is going to eat up a huge amount of money and resources. As we must remind ourselves, it is the only major transit project in the city’s long-term transit plan that is fully funded, and the only other one that’s even partially funded is also in Scarborough: the Eglinton Crosstown line that will actually service Scarborough neighbour-

hoods. The downtown relief line, which transit planners have noted is essential to stave off unacceptable levels of crowding on the Yonge line, is not funded, nor is light rail servicing the city’s waterfront. And as was revealed this week, it will likely be more difficult than not to wrestle more money from the provincial government. Ontario’s Financial Accountability Office noted in a report released Tuesday that the province is in danger of over-extending itself on transit spending as matters stand, with an extra $50 billion in provincial debt in 2021 due to transit alone. So fulfilling those dreams – of subways, eventually, everywhere – will be a long shot. In the short run of these summer months, as pleasant and peaceable as these dreams are, dreams are all they are.

Race to fill Rob Ford’s empty seat enters its final few days Candidates debate the issues TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Transit improvements, tackling crime and violence and some drama dominated the second major debate Wednesday in the byelection to fill the late Rob Ford’s Ward 2 council seat. Michael Ford, 22, nephew of Rob and Doug and the future of the Ford legacy, sounded a lot like his late uncle Rob as he held his own against candidates’ shots against his family’s customer service political philosophy, and his commitment to his family’s pro-subways stance. “I want to focus on customer service,” Ford said. “When you call my office, I’ll be on the end of the phone and at your door to get the job done.” Yet, largely unlike his uncles, Ford promoted dialogue and consensus building: “We need to bring our youth to the table. We need to

hear them, come together and listen to everyone. We need to work with our school boards and community partners,” Ford said about combatting crime. Like his uncles, Ford pledged to fight against higher taxes. “One thing I hear at the door is ‘don’t raise taxes.’” Jeff Canning, 56, took aim at Ford, arguing customer service “is not a platform plank. It’s a minimum standard to be expected (of a councillor).” “If you’re going into the ring with Mike Tyson, you better know you’re getting into a fight,” said Canning, comparing Ford to the heavyweight boxing champ. Canning said he favoured a combination of subways and light rapid transit (LRT), as well as dedicated bus routes on Rexdale Boulevard, Dixon Road and Hwy. 27. Christopher Strain, another strong contender, offered concise responses. “We need to stop the $3 billion

Tamara Shephard/MeTroland

Eight of 12 registered candidates in the Ward 2 byelection including Ken Street (left), Stacey Agard, Christopher Strain, Jeff Canning, Chloe-Marie Brown, Michael Ford and Chai Kalevar participated in a debate last Wednesday night. Candidate Kevin Clarke also participated.

Scarborough subway gravy train,” he said. “We need 15-minute, all-day service. The Woodbine/(Hwy.) 27 (GO) station was put at the bottom of the list. (We need it).” Keeping candidates on topic marked much of the debate at Martingrove United Church that drew about 80 residents.

The at-times strange comments of perennial candidate Kevin Clarke and Chaitanya Kalevar, an engineer, drew both laughter and anger throughout the 90-minute meeting. “People call me the Black Rob Ford,” said Clarke, adding “I will rip (Tory and Wynne) a new A-R-S-E.”

WESTEND HYUNDAI

3526 LAKE SHORE BLVD W, TORONTO, ON M8W 1N5

At one point, Kalevar dismissed talk of green lighting the long-delayed Woodbine Entertainment complex, instead suggesting 50 per cent of Torontonians are obese and building fitness centres should be a priority. “Get off your fat asses, all of you,” he said, as shock resonated throughout the room. Chloe-Marie Brown, 25, a George Brown College job coach, worked for two years at city hall as an intern in Councillor Pam McConnell’s office. She is a former director of policy and advocacy with the Toronto Youth Cabinet. Brown drew enthusiastic responses from the crowd throughout the night as she advocated the need for a transit hub at Woodbine, and for building a network of community partners to engage youth to address crime. “The violence we see is because drug sales are spilling out into our streets,” said candidate Stacey Agard, who works in education, training and development. “Until we

address the issue of drug users, we’re never going to stop crime in our streets.” Ken Street, a future paralegal and 25-year Rexdale resident, spoke repeatedly of My Rex, a local organization. Also running for Ward 2 councillor are: Annette Lubinski, Christopher Noor, Glen Smith and Jimmy Talpa. Ayokunle Ogunsanmi withdrew from the race. Rob Ford held the Ward 2 seat from 2000 to 2010. His brother Doug Ford then held it from 2010 to 2014 while Rob Ford was Toronto mayor. Rob Ford handily regained his Ward 2 seat in 2014, winning nearly 60 per cent of the vote. Rob Ford died in March, 18 months after being diagnosed with a rare, aggressive cancer. The Ward 2 byelection takes place Monday. Polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Call 416-338-1111 or visit http://bit.ly/1Z95sSa to learn where to vote.

special report

Human trafficking issue is ‘a provincial, national crisis’ >>>from page 1 and justice is served, “I’m happy with that.” The provincial government unveiled the long-awaited human trafficking strategy Thursday, June 30, which calls for an investment up to $72 million aimed at increasing awareness and co-ordination, enhancing justice-sector initiatives and improving survivors’ access to services. Currently, Ontario is grappling with roughly 65 per cent of police-reported human trafficking cases in Canada. The strategy involves nine ministries and is based on four pillars: strong leadership through an antihuman trafficking office through CommSoc, which will collect and share information; increased awareness and community supports to help survivors heal; justice sector initiatives to identify trafficking earlier and hold traffickers to account; and indigenous-led approaches. Det. Sgt. Nunzio Tramontozzi of Toronto Police Service’s human trafficking team called the strategy a great start, noting specialized Crowns are a police asset. If Crowns don’t understand “trauma bonds” between the victim and pimp, it’s hard for them to wrap their mind around why a girl would protect a guy who brutalized her for years, he said, adding instead of forging ahead and putting the victim on the stand, they tend to take pleas for lesser offences. “As of last summer we only had

one (human trafficking) conviction in Toronto,” he said. “One guy. It’s pretty sad.” Ontario’s Attorney General Yasir Naqvi, who was on hand for the strategy’s release, called human trafficking an increasing, complex problem. A specialized team of Crown attorneys will ensure cases are prosecuted effectively and consistently across province, he said, adding expanded quick response programs will be in place to help victims, including paying for things such as travel costs, identification replacement, and enhancing 24-hour crisis assistance. But not everyone was pleased with the strategy. Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock MPP Laurie Scott, who put forward a private member’s bill Saving the Girl Next Door, which calls for victims to obtain restraining orders against their trafficker and sue them for damages, said while the strategy is a step in the right direction, it ultimately falls short. The Conservative MPP took issue with the lack of permanent multiyear funding and firm deadlines for establishing a multi-jurisdictional and multi-disciplinary task force. In an interview with Metroland Media Toronto prior to the strategy’s release, she said the province needs to take the lead in human trafficking enforcement. “It’s modern day slavery,” she said. “Will all survivors sue? No, but it’s a means of justice.” Scott’s bill would also include traf-

ficking as a sexual offence under the age of 18. Michelle Smith, executive director of Women’s Support Network of York Region in Newmarket, which runs a human trafficking help line, called the issue a “provincial and national crisis.” She hoped the strategy would include long-term core funding, along with people specialized in human trafficking and infrastructure for couselling. Trafficked women sometimes require “eight, nine, 10-hour care”, with psychological and emotional trauma the most pervasive aspect. “We have women that are servicing eight to 10 men a day, against their will,” she said. Funded by Canada’s Department of Justice, York Region launched a bus campaign several weeks ago aimed at trafficked women, Smith said, suggesting a go-to guide and app needs to be available for school boards to inform teachers about human trafficking signs to look out for. Besides a strategy, greater emphasis on social media literacy must be taught in schools to help combat human trafficking, said Debbie Gordon, director of kidsmediacentre at Centennial College. Being able to share case studies about other young victims works, but voices of young people who question the sensibilities of the social media culture need to be heard, she said. “Kids will listen when it’s one of their own.”

Council says ‘yes’ to street safety measure plans Rahul Gupta rgupta@insidetoronto.com Toronto Council has approved a new safety plan intended to reduce pedestrian and cyclist fatalities on Toronto roads. The plan calls for a number of measures to reduce road fatalities to zero – part of a Vision Zero aspiration adopted by several cities – including adding more signalized crossings, establishing slow-speed zones around schools, doubling existing fines for speeding and increasing traffic signs. By unanimous vote, council opted to support the approximately $80-million five-year plan, half of it new money, which received a boost to funding last week following criticism from pedestrian and cycling advocates for not going far enough in addressing road safety. Public works chair Jaye Robinson said with the new measures added, the plan will allow the city in some cases to quadruple its efforts improving road safety. “From the beginning, this plan had great bones but the scale and scope were not enough,” said Robinson during council’s third day

of its July meeting, held Thursday. Trinity-Spadina councillor Joe Cressy called the plan a good start, but hardly revolutionary considering smaller cities like Oakland and Portland have committed $200

million annually towards improving road safety. “While the plan will result in fewer fatalities, we have to think the headlines (about road fatalities) will continue in the years to come

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

because ultimately a radical rethink of our streets, and the money needed for that, is required,” said Cressy. Council also supported measures to reduce speeds on sections of Richmond, Adelaide, Front and Wellington streets, from 50 km/h to 40 km/h, as well as a stretch of Gerrard Street, leading east of Victoria Park Avenue which encompasses three councillors’ wards. Council also supported by a 24-17 margin Frances Nunziata’s motion requesting the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to ban pedestrians from using handheld devices while on a traveled road, for example while crossing an intersection. “If you’re texting and driving or texting and walking, in my opinion it’s the same,” said Nunziata during her remarks. Council did not support Kristyn Wong-Tam’s motion to accelerate the plan to two years, opting instead to support a less aggressive motion from Mary-Margaret McMahon which seeks staff advice on whether a faster timeline is “doable”. McMahon’s motion passed by a wide margin, 39-2. Wong-Tam said the lack of support on council in regards to improv-

ing road safety for non-motorists is telling. “Billions of dollars have been spent getting people from A to B five minutes faster, and yet we’re struggling to find a little bit of money to keep people safe,” she said. Following the vote, a prominent cycling advocate called on council to speed up the plan to prevent further deaths. “I sincerely hope we get to accelerate this thing to two years,” said Jared Kolb, Executive Director of Cycle Toronto. “The real problem is that people are going to continue to die on the streets of Toronto in preventable traffic collisions. But there’s still so much more that needs to be done. We’ve had 65 cyclists killed last year and we’ve already had a significant number killed and injured this year. We’ve got to accelerate this thing as fast as possible.” Kolb was also disappointed council opted to support Nunziata’s motion banning mobile phone use by pedestrians. Twenty-three pedestrians and one cyclist have been killed so far this year. - with files from David Nickle

Air conditioned TTC debuts Faced with frustrated and sweltering transit riders due to a lack of air conditioning on its subway trains, the TTC has resorted to a novel solution. Some lucky Bloor line riders had a chance to board a Toronto Rocket train last week, which are normally seen on YongeUniversity-Spadina line. The vehicles are characterized by barrier-free access allowing for uninterrupted travel from one end of the train to the other. And blessedly, all Toronto Rockets are air conditioned. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said the goal is to add a few Rockets to Line 2 service while repairs are made on the broken trains. texting and walking on streets wbanning

It’s game on for street hockey in Toronto, council decides DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com It will be game on for street hockey players this year, after Toronto Council voted without debate to permit the playing of hockey and basketball on some roads. The move came on July 15, the fourth day of Toronto Council’s last meeting before the summer break, as weary politicians gave the thumbsup to Eglinton-Lawrence Councillor Christin Carmichael Greb’s motion setting out rules for both on-street basketball and hockey. Transportation staff had recommended against allowing the age-old practise of playing ball hockey and basketball on streets with portable nets, “as it encourages children and adults to play on the roadway” and could create a safety hazard. Council decided it was worth the risk. “We’re dealing with an age where obesity’s a problem and kids don’t have the space to get out and run

around,” said Carmichael Greb. “I think that parents need to teach their kids how to be responsible and play safely. Most of us grew up doing it and it’s not anything different now. You yell ‘car’ and you go away, and you yell ‘play’ and you go on and play.” Carmichael Greb moved an amendment to the bylaw prohibiting playing on roads. Now hockey and basketball are permitted on local roads that have a speed limit of 40 km/hr or less, only during daylight hours and never before 9 a.m. or after 8 p.m. player responsibilities Those who decide to play are responsible for finding locations that are safe and playing safely, and they waive all claims against the city in the event of mishap. Portable nets are allowed so long as they don’t obstruct sight lines, nor obstruct driveways or create safety hazards for vehicles and pedestrians.

We’re dealing with an age where obesity’s a problem and kids don’t have the space to get out and run around. I think that parents need to teach their kids how to be responsible and play safely. – Christin Carmichael Greb, eglinton-lawrence councillor

They also can’t interfere with street cleaning or traffic control devices and must be removed on completion of the activity. “Now kids can be active — it gives them another mode to be out having fun, learning street smarts and building community,” said Carmichael Greb. “It’s a win for families and for people who think the city has all these silly bylaws that can’t be enforced. It shows you really can make a change a city hall.”

Seven tips for throwing the perfect green summer party Warmer weather and lighter summer schedules make it the perfect time to celebrate with family and friends. Whether you’re hosting a small get-together or a big soirée, an eco-friendly summer party is great for the environment. TD Friends of the Environment Foundation offers creative ways to help you throw a fun green summer party. • Create coffee tables for drinks and snacks using leftover wood pallets from your local hardware or grocery store. Stack a few pallets on top of each other and top with a few trays to make a great outdoor table, or add patio cushions and pillows for extra seating. • Add country flair by drinking out of mason jars. Serve drinks using pitchers instead of single-serve packages, which can be an extra cost and create waste.

• Source locally crafted beer and wine, as well as produce, seafood and meat where possible. • Decorate with potted plants or herbs that can be added to your garden after the party or given to guests as mementos. • Light up the night and save energy by using solar or LED outdoor lighting options. A single LED light lasts up to 25,000 hours while an incandescent lightbulb lasts about 1,500 hours. • Looking to dress up your tables with centre pieces? Use potted plants in decorative containers and offer them as gifts or prizes for your guests to take home. • Don’t forget to offer recycling and composting options for ecofriendly waste disposal.

Pokemon Go helps take augmented reality to the next level

Players compete against each other at the ‘Battle for the CN Tower’

DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

>>>from page 1 hundreds of fans. Tanisha Grewal was one of the lucky ones to get a picture with the mascot. “I’ve always been a huge Pokémon fan since I was two years old – I’ve watched all the anime series and played all the games,” she said. “I am so excited to see Pikachu here – it’s like my childhood dream came true.” Matthew Cashman, 30, the organizer of the “meet-up” and co-founder of Legacy Gamers, a Toronto-based gaming events organization, created the event “on a whim,” and was surprised at the turnout. He thought it was a great way to celebrate an important game in many people’s childhood. “I used to play Pokémon back in the day when it first came out, on my Game Boy black-and-white screen,” he said. “As a kid, I was pretty passionate about it.” Developed by American software company Niantic, Inc., Pokémon Go operates very much like a fantasy Google Map. The game is set in augmented reality, where players physically walk to “capture” Pokémon. The game also includes PokéStops that are city attractions, historic sites and art instillations for players to collect extra PokéBalls, lures to attract Pokémon to the area, as well as other items. Pokémon Gyms, located at various physical locations, are places where players

Even before it was available here this week, Nintendo’s augmented-reality phone game Pokemon Go was showing numbers to rival social-media giants like Twitter; filling parks and boulevards with giant mobs of like-minded players, hunting for virtual sprites in parks and boulevards, through the camera-lens of their smartphones. As viral phenomenon go, Pokemon Go is near the top of the heap. But it may well signify something more significant than even that. “It’s important not to underestimate how important this phenomenon is on different levels,” says Natalie Zina Walschotts, a Toronto-based game critic and designer who’s been playing and watching the game since it first emerged. “Literally a third of the world is playing this game,” she says. “More people are playing this game than anything else, and that’s important. The other thing that’s crucial is that it has already changed the discourse with which we move through the world.” Moving through the world – and interacting with objects that are not in fact in the world – is a cornerstone of a suite of applications known as augmented reality (as opposed to virtual reality, which through devices like the Oculus Rift immerse users in a completely invented space).

Pokemon Go is not the first AR technology or application – several years ago, Google introduced an experimental device “Google Glass,” which projected images and text on a pair of camera-equipped eyeglasses – but Pokemon is the first to catch on. Given its success, it is not likely to be the last. Walschotts was immediately struck by the power of a game that takes the imaginary friends of childhood, and places them in a familiar environment. “You are literally doing the thing you were pretending to do in a video game, and you are doing it in a real physical space,” she said. And because it is a game – one shared by millions of other users – it is safe, in the way that Google Glass, with its cameras and potentially disturbing and voyeuristic applications, might not be. But make no mistake. Augmented Reality will soon enough have numerous practical applications. “Augmented Reality makes the invisible, visible,” says Toronto-based science fiction writer and strategic foresight expert Karl Schroeder. “It has the potential to be a kind of heads-up display showing us what’s going on around us in a much more live and detailed way than traditional news or word of mouth. Our phones already show us where the nearest restaurant or gas station is… Everything from dating to political activism can be supercharged by AR.”

become trainers and battle other Pokémon players on different teams. The event is dubbed by Cashman as “The Battle for the CN Tower”, meaning players will compete against each other for Toronto’s most iconic Pokémon gym. “It’s Canada’s icon as well – so I thought it would be the

best place to celebrate the launch of the game,” he said. Jill Vienneau came to the event to accompany her son Jackson, but ended up installing the game on her phone as well. She became a level five Pokémon trainer in one day. “I was skeptical at first,” she said. “But I must say, it’s been a lot of fun. You definitely get

sucked into the game.” Chris Mackinnon, 28, came all the way from Etobicoke with his friends. He says Pokémon Go gave them a purpose to go outside. “We’re all out here to live out our childhood dreams of becoming Pokémon trainers,” he said. “We have proven this game is better to play with friends and we’re so glad the game is out for everybody in Canada.” However, Mackinnon admits the game poses a safety risk for people. “I think the most dangerous thing is that you’ll end up in areas that you’re not familiar with,” he said. Toronto police Const. David Hopkinson says safety plans are in place and police officers are on site to make sure everyone is able to have fun in a safe manner during the event. But more importantly, he advises the public to be in charge of their own safety and not get carried away when playing the game. “The app does not account for your safety, as it does not take into consideration any traffic or trespassing onto private property,” he said. “Be aware of your surroundings, and be aware of how it might affect those around you. A Squirtle is not worth your safety.” MORE ONLINE Safety tip list issued for young Pokemon players at bit.ly/pokesafety

He wants PG Harvey Events to align with his values – local, seasonal, handmade food. While his seasonal menus evolve, Harvey says some of his signature items include his lobster bisque with cognac cream, and his prized béarnaise sauce. Through weddings, corporate galas, a private Valentine’s eight-course dinner and a children’s Christmas party, he says customizing a menu is one of the most enjoyable aspects of his work – a flexibility he says larger caterers often can’t indulge.

Golfer Connor Munro swings his way to a fourth ranking in his division Connor Munro is currently ranked fourth mid-season in the U15 Bantam division by the Golf Association of Canada. The 13-year-old Etobicoke boy has secured some early successes during this year’s play. In May, Connor tied for first place in the Nike Junior Series at the Canadian Junior Golf Association Tour at Caledon Woods Golf Club.

After a strong second day shooting the low score of the tournament, he overcame a five-shot deficit only to lose on the second playoff hole. Last month, he won the Optimist Club Central District Championship for the 12-13 age group. That qualified Connor for the Optimist International Junior Golf Tournament being held July 21 to 25 at Professional

Golf Association’s National Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla. Connor came in fifth out of 38 golfers at the U17 Ontario Summer Games Qualifier at Maples of Ballantrae Golf Club on June 27 playing against golfers three years older. “This likely is his biggest accomplishment yet,” said Connor’s dad, Alec. On July 4-5, Connor

are You experiencing headaches?

Q A

Dr. Srajeldin, I have daily headaches. It doesn’t appear to resolve. can you help? The World Health Organization reported that around 45% of adults worldwide have experienced symptoms of headaches in the last year. Headaches may affect everyone and could be classified as primary or secondary.

Oftentimes people suffering from headaches try to treat their own headaches. Self treatment does not solve the cause of the headache. This may lead to nurse the symptom and not removing it from the body for good. To treat a headache, you must establish its cause first. Prior to prescribing any treatment, a naturopath will study the cause of your chronic headache and treat it accordingly. One treatment does not fit all, as there is a wide range of possible causes. Some of the causes are allergy to certain daily foods, elevated blood pressure, anxiety, sleeping pattern, life style, over use of pain medications, neck posture, sinusitis, dehydration, alcohol, etc. A single approach using a chiropractor or a naturopath or combined approaches by both may set you as headache free.

Because family matters By discussing options with your loved ones today, you can make a final plan that respects your wishes and protects your family.
