Rotary clubs celebrate polio vaccination success One year since last reported case in Nigeria CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Last Friday marked one year since the last reported case of polio in Nigeria – an achievement local Rotarians helped bring about through fundraising and volunteer efforts in their 30-year fight to eradicate the crippling disease worldwide. Deemed a “major milestone in global public health,” the one-year anniversary announcement signals the world might soon see a poliofree Africa, said Michael Bell, governor of Rotary International District 7070, which includes 54 Rotary Clubs stretching from Toronto to Belleville to Alliston. “The 2,300 Rotarians in District 7070...have long supported efforts to end this crippling disease, though donations of over $2.8 million covering the last 30 years that Rotary has been involved in the worldwide fight to eradicate polio,” Bell said in a statement. Rotar y Inter national launched PolioPlus, a global initiative to immunize children against polio, in 1985. It has since contributed more than $1.4 billion, and helped immunize more than two billion children against polio in 122 countries. Those efforts, Rotary reports, have paid staggering dividends, with a 99.9 per

As part of National Immunization Days aimed at vaccinating 172 million children under the age of five across India, Etobicoke lawyer Patti Wright, past-president of the Rotary Club of Toronto West (centre) joined a Rotary International team of volunteers from Canada, Switzerland, Australia and the United States to give polio vaccinations in rural India earlier this year. In addition to Wright, there were three additional members from Toronto: Dr Raffy Choulijian and Jennifer Boyd and her fiancé Ryan Fogerty, all from the Toronto-Don Mills Rotary Club.
cent worldwide reduction in polio cases – from 350,000 annual cases in 1988, to 400 cases in 2014. In Etobicoke, two clubs – the Rotary Club of Etobicoke and Rotary Club of Toronto West – have played an integral part in that fight against polio, both through their members’ fundraising efforts and through their hands-on volunteer work in polio-effected countries. In February, Patricia Wright, past-president of the Rotary Club of Toronto West, traveled to India for a 10-day Rotary International-organized trip to administer oral polio vaccines to children in the slums of Delhi and surrounding towns. “It was such an eye-opening experience for me, watching the work that Rotarians do
there...it’s mind-boggling that they give out that many vaccinations to that many people,” she said, estimating the number of vaccinations her small group helped administer at more than 200. “I think going, I really got to see (the impact of polio) firsthand. It’s easy to read about it, but polio has been gone from here (Canada) for so long, that you don’t really realize it’s still an issue,” she said. “There, we were exposed to the hideous deformations (caused by polio). We don’t see those here. So it makes me incredibly proud to celebrate this anniversary, and I can hardly wait for my next trip.”

‘I missed her’ says girls’ mentor of Lecent Ross Ladies on the Rise founder regrets not connecting with Jamestown shooting victim CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com If Marcia Brown has one regret this summer, it’s that she never came across Lecent Ross while recruiting young girls for her Ladies on the Rise summer program on the streets of Jamestown and beyond. “This year, I got three of her friends into Ladies on the Rise, but I missed her,” Brown said of Lecent, the 14-year-old Greenholme Junior Middle School grad who was killed July 9 by an illegal handgun in what many believe was an accidental shooting, but which is still under investigation by police. “It’s so hard, because at the time that young girl got killed that day, around 10 a.m., where were all my girls? My girls were safe with me. I wish she’d been there with us.” A Premier’s Award for Teaching Excellence recipi-

ent, Brown is an education assistant with the Toronto District School Board. It was through that work at several north Etobicoke schools – including Greenholme, where she knew Lecent as a student – that Brown said she saw a need for after-school mentorship programming for girls in the neighbourhood. From that perceived gap, Brown gave rise to the Ladies on the Rise program in 2011, starting with just 15 teen par-

Fast-forward four years, and now programming under Brown’s umbrella Trust 15 Youth Community Support Organization – the not-forprofit organization providing inner-city youth with programs that facilitate positive behaviour, creative expression and cooperative working skills, for which Brown serves as both founder and executive
director – has expanded to encompass three different programs that serve a full 120 young people from the north Etobicoke community. Those programs include: the original Ladies on the Rise program, its brother program Men of Distinction, and Girls on the Rise, a literacy program for preteen girls. “In this program, we’re empowering these young girls,” said Brown. “We’re
trying to keep them occupied. We’re trying to do things so that their eyes aren’t wandering, and so that when their parents are off working – because some of my parents work nights, and they work two jobs, and they don’t have the time to spend with their kids, and it’s not their fault – their kids will be in a safe environment, where they’ll be learning and having fun.” This summer’s free Ladies

on the Rise program – which, now in its fifth year, is being funded by the Ministry of Education – boasts 50 female participants ranging in age from 11 to 16, who’ve been meeting daily at North Kipling Junior Middle School since late June for days filled with dance lessons, field trips around the city, and a variety of special guest speakers. Last Tuesday, the girls donned their best dresses and hats, and gathered at Topiary’s Steak and Seafood in Mississauga for a tea party with CityNews reporter Tammie Sutherland and 23 Division Supt. Ron Taverner, among other guests. Brown said she hopes the program might save the dozens of young girls she’s successfully taken under her wing this summer from ever having to cope with such senseless loss again. “In that first week after it happened, we had a really hard time... We talked about it a lot and we worked it out together, because that’s what we do in this program – we support each other.”

Olympic prudence needed in wake of Pan Am afterglow
Write us
W
e like the enthusiasm, goodwill and optimism Toronto’s Pan Am Games appear to have generated. But we must stress this is a time for prudence and caution as it relates to the Olympic Games and the city considering a bid. With the Pan Am Games portion of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games complete, what were once merely isolated whispers of a future Olympic bid for our city have grown noticeably louder – and in fairly fast fashion. As a concept, a Toronto Olympic bid is not an outrageous one. It really isn’t. Reviews of the Pan Am experience are largely positive. While there would be work needed to bring facilities up to Olympic standards, there’s been a good start made with the Pan Am/Parapan Am our view Games facilities. Also, the city’s and cultural diversity Objective review ethnic make Toronto an ideal showof Pan Am Games piece for a global event. And as the Pan Am Games the first step have shown, these kinds of events can serve as an important catalyst for needed infrastructure improvements that serve the community at large well after the Games have left town. But... one thing at a time, people. First, let’s have a proper assessment of the Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games – which aren’t even over yet. This review should provide relevant, objective information that can help inform not only an Olympic bid decision, but also ongoing aspects of life in the city, particularly as it relates to traffic and transit. Also, Toronto has been down this Olympic bid route before. The two most recent bids being the one for the 1996 (which went to Atlanta) and 2008 (which went to Beijing) Games. The bids alone are a significant undertaking. It’s worth examining what happened in those instances. The post-Pan Am Games euphoria for Toronto is understandable. Indeed, it’s better than the alternative. But it will take more than euphoria to fuel a legitimate Olympic bid. The city must assess its needs and capabilities. So let’s rush to the finish line, not to the starting gate. We all need to take a deep breath, and understand just what something like this would entail before we decide it’s the right course of action.

There’s a showdown in Spadina-Fort York
I
t is going to be a hot time in Spadina-Fort York this summer and fall. Two of Toronto’s highest-profile progressive pols, Olivia Chow and Adam Vaughan, will be facing off in the newly minted riding. Vaughan, a former broadcast journalist and city councillor, is the incumbent of sorts; he has held the vanishing federal riding of TrinitySpadina for a year, winning it for the Liberals in a byelection necessitated by New Democrat Chow’s departure to run what turned out to be an unsuccessful mayoral bid. It wasn’t a great surprise when Vaughan took the byelection. Indeed, voters in the NDP-supporting riding could have been forgiven for not realizing they weren’t voting NDP again when they elected Vaughan. He had been a proper nemesis for the right on council –
david nickle the city then-mayor Rob Ford in particular – and a strong supporter of progressive causes. Several of his colleagues privately wondered why he hadn’t joined Thomas Mulcair’s team, given all that. But Vaughan threw in with the Liberals for a pragmatic reason: in the spring of 2014, Justin Trudeau seemed the best bet to replace Stephen Harper and the Conservatives in government. Things appear very different in 2015. It’s not trending well for the Liberals, and the fortunes of Mulcair’s New Democrats have risen considerably. If the trend in polls continues, Vaughan will have to rely principally on his own record
as a local representative - which is not inconsiderable, as he will also draw on his accomplishments as city councillor and profile as a media-savvy former journalist. Chow, conversely, will be riding an orange wave propelled further by the profile she built during the 2014 mayoral campaign. She didn’t win, and didn’t, in the end, even run a terribly effective campaign against Doug Ford’s bombast and John Tory’s reassurance. It was an honourable defeat. And there is that orange wave. In most elections, the NDP policy book shows up as a utopian document no one seriously thinks has a chance of being implemented. But this time, promises to fund child care and public housing and transit infrastructure carry the weight of possibility. It will be a hard fight, for that. A year ago, Vaughan
was a serious catch for Trudeau and the Liberals. On Tuesday, he made it clear that he still is. “Olivia Chow has never given me a free ride in this city and I’ve prevailed,” Vaughan told reporters. And that much is true. He took over Chow’s seat on council when she left for Ottawa by beating her preferred candidate. He defeated Chow’s chosen successor (and now city councillor) Joe Cressy a year ago. And the new riding concentrates Vaughan’s support, and contains polls where Chow did not do as well in her bid for mayor. What it boils down to is this: in 2015, it’s a good bet the new Member from Spadina-Fort York will be a member of the governing party. All other things being, in this case, nearly equal.

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.
Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners
like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

Local kids bust a move in Games’ victory dance

MOMENTARY CELEBRATION: The men’s Canadian relay team – including Etobians Gavin Smellie, left, and Brendon Rodney, with Aaron Brown and Andre De Grasse – celebrate their apparent gold medal win in the Pan Am Games men’s 4x100m relay final at CIBC Athletics Stadium on Saturday. Canada was subsequently disqualified due to a lane violation.
end with a bang
Tommy Lane, 11, and Isabelle Burzese, 10, can count a public Pan Am Games’ victory dance among the highlights of their summer. The Etobicoke kids, two of five in a children’s hip hop dance troupe, joined the excitement surrounding Toronto 2015 rousing cheering crowds nightly at Nathan Phillips Square. The three-minute choreographed dance routine to the song, ‘Victory’, primed nightly Victory Celebrations of each day’s winning Pan Am athletes. “It’s really amazing,” said Tommy, a dancer for four years. “It’s a great opportunity. You meet other good dancers. It’s so much fun. There were lots of butterflies in the beginning. But you get used to it.” Meeting winning athletes, and sometimes donning their Pan Am medals, was icing on the cake. “All the athletes were really impressive. They’ve been working toward this their whole life,” Tommy said. Shameka Blake, an instructor with Etobicoke-based Artistic Edge Dance Company, plucked the pair for the Pan Am performance she helped choreograph.

Dancers rehearsed for 75 minutes each night before hitting the stage. “It was a fabulous experience,” said Christina Burzese, Isabelle’s mom. “It gives me goosebumps that my 10-year-old worked hard enough to have this once-in a-lifetime opportunity that placed her in her element. When she gets up on stage, that’s where she is meant to be.” Dancing is her life, Isabelle said. “It’s so fun. I loved being on stage,” Isabelle said of her Pan Am Games’ experience. “It’s probably the most amazing experience of my whole life. Teres Edmonds, Tommy’s mom, said neighbourhood friends jetted downtown nightly to see Tommy and Isabelle in action. “We’re very excited and very proud,” she said on behalf of her and her husband, Michael Lane. “It’s a really wonderful experience. It will take a while to come back down to earth.”

staff thankful for volunteers, donations
>>>from page 1 body. For us, it was a really big spill and a really big crisis, so we were very happy to see the last of the ducks be released again,” she said, noting that the centre now only has two Mimico ducks in its care – today’s most recent rescuee and a female duck with a small hole in its chest that requires further medical care. While dozens of Toronto Wildlife staff and volunteers worked day and night over the last few weeks to rescue, transport, clean and rehabilitate the oil-saturated ducks, Karvonen said approximately 30 of those birds rescued from Mimico Creek did not survive the oil spill – most of them ducklings who succumbed to hypothermia. “They had the least capacity to deal with the trauma, and they died fast,” she said. “But beyond those, there was a good success rate – over 70 per cent of them survived and have now been returned back to the wild.” That so many birds were able to be rescued and released is a testament to the hard work and dedication of her staff and volunteers, Karvonen added. “Everyone was absolutely incredible. It was exhausting for sure, but it was really touching to see how everyone pulled together. We had staff and volunteers working sideby-side for crazy long hours,” she said, noting that those on the ‘direct spill response teams’ often worked throughout the day and night, many times until 4 or 5 a.m., washing the oil from the rescued birds’ feathers. “That was hard going, because they were basically immersed in hot water – in July – and bent over all day, which is really hard on your back. So, for me, it was just amazing to see how everybody pulled together and just worked so hard.” Karvonen said she’s also thankful for the “really, really

hot water tank donated, and a plumber’s services to install it, which was really appreciated, because we were going through so much hot water, so quickly.” Cash donations, Karvonen added, were also – and continue to be – greatly appreciated, as they were critical to ensuring the rescue efforts were a success. “A huge amount of what we had to cover was massive amounts of extra staff and our medical supplies were depleted very, very quickly,” she said. “And there’s still a need. We will be recovering from this for a long time.”

In 1840, an enterprising young man named William Pearce Howland leased 40 hectares of farmland between Islington and Kipling avenues, north of Rathburn Road, as a summer estate he named Thorncrest Park. He purchased the property in 1853 and the following year built the frame house seen in the above photo. Built in an Ontario vernacular style, it had a multi-gabled roof decorated with classical brackets and an elegant front entrance with flush columns and a pediment. Unseen under the siding was a rare stacked plank style of wood construction. Howland was born in New York in 1811, but immigrated to Canada in 1830, becoming a British subject in 1841. In 1845, he built a large flour mill on Dundas Street, just east of the Humber River, naming it Lambton Mills. His primary residence was a large red brick house just north of his mill. He went on to serve as an MPP from
denise harris history corner 1857 to 1868 and as Ontario’s second lieutenant governor from 1868 to 1873. He was also a Father of Confederation and was knighted in 1879. Howland sold Thorncrest Park in 1868 to Janet Douglas, mother-in-law of William Mo n t g o m e r y, T h o m a s Montgomery’s son. It remained in the Montgomery family until 1942 and in 1945 was purchased by visionary developer Marshall Foss. unique concept Foss hired ground-breaking planner Eugene Faludi to design his new development called Thorncrest Village. Faludi’s plan included a long twisting main street with cul-de-sacs running from it. Prospective homebuyers had to be approved, as did all house designs. Preferred plans were single story “ranch-style” dwellings with no basements and infloor radiant heating. Each lot was half an acre and, to maintain a green appearance, no fences were allowed – hedges only. H o w l a n d ’s o r i g i n a l Thorncrest Park home was retained, and Sir William’s Lane was named after him. Some realtors, mortgage
investors, municipal engineers and potential buyers found fault with Faludi’s plan. However, the appeal to progress that this unique development represented attracted many buyers and all 180 lots were sold. Restrictions were put on all deeds for 30 years to maintain Faludi’s standards, but these had all expired by the 1970s. Little by little, original rules have gone by the wayside and many houses have been replaced by larger, taller homes that are changing the character of Thorncrest Village. H o w l a n d ’s o r i g i n a l Thorncrest Park house was of historical importance for its connection to a Father of Confederation, as well as its stacked plank construction. Despite protests from the community, it was demolished in 1999 and replaced with a new house.

Calendar sales support free prosthetic breasts and specialized bras for survivors >>>from page 1 of chemo and radiation therapies – an ordeal she said not only stripped her of her energy, but also robbed her of her sense of beauty. On July 15, thanks to the S/ HE Thrives calendar project, Manwar and 11 other After Breast Cancer ambassadors had that sense of beauty restored to them courtesy of a full day of pampering by a team of celebrity stylists, designers, hair and make-up artists – all in preparation for a glamorous photo shoot on the scenic grounds of Casa Loma. “Doing the photo shoot, it was all glam and glitz. It was great to be pampered, to dress up and to look beautiful again, because in the last three years, I’ve been completely bald twice and partially bald once; and I’ve gone from 165 pounds to 190 pounds in 2012, and now I’m down to 104 pounds,” said Manwar. “So, it was great to feel beautiful again, even though I’m this thin now.” Manwar, a member of the Rotary Club of Etobicoke, was just one of four Etobicoke breast cancer survivors to act as ambassadors/models for this month’s second annual S/HE Thrives calendar photo shoot – a fundraiser for After
Lynn Manwar
Breast Cancer, a charity founded by Etobicoke’s Alicia Vianga. Other local survivors who participated in the project this year include Diane Dupuy, founder of Famous People Players, Seema Gill and Susan Fulford. All money raised from the sale of the S/HE Thrives calendar, Vianga said, will support After Breast Cancer’s mission to provide breast cancer survivors in need with free prosthetic breasts and specialized bras. “For those that don’t have the money or insurance (for a prosthesis), they often walk out feeling even more defeated, so I started After Breast Cancer to make sure
I am able to provide my services to everyone,” said Vianga, a certified bra and breast prosthesis fitter and owner of Premier Jour Fine Lingerie & Swimwear. For Gill, 39, the S/HE Thrives experience was one in which she was not only made to feel beautiful, but was also able to bond with her new “sisters” in survival. “It was so nice, because you meet all these other women who are going through it, who have gone through it. And they all have deeper stories that go along with their experience and that you can relate to your own,” she said. Diagnosed in 2011, just a year after the birth of her first daughter Tarah, now four, Gill said that after her lumpectomy and preventative rounds of chemo and radiation therapies, she was advised by doctors that her chances of having another child were slim. Nevertheless, Gill and her husband Deep gave birth to their miracle baby, daughter Niyah, now 11 months. “I feel healthy. I feel great. I do a lot more meditation, and I’m more spiritual now.” – Cynthia Reason

Maximize natural light in your home Adding daylight to your living space is one of the best things you can do to improve your home. There aren’t many other home adjustments that have the power to change your mood, your health, the style, comfort and design of your home than something as simple as natural light. Here are some smart ways to enhance the natural light that enters your home. 1. Capitalize on windows: Go with light and airy blinds or curtains, instead of
dark and heavy textures. Translucent shades provide privacy while still allowing the sun’s natural brightness to shine through. Even something as simple as pulling back curtains during the day and give your windows a thorough cleaning can make a big impact. 2. Fresh paint colour: Choose a soft, bright colour for your walls to help reflect the natural light that comes in. While dark colours tend to consume
the brightness of a room and give off a feeling of dullness and lifelessness, light coloured paint can actually radiate natural light that comes through. A tip to maximize the effectiveness of light paint is to add white paint trim around your windows and an accent wall for a pop of colour. 3. Put in a sun tunnel: While skylights may not work for the roof details or floor plans of every home, Sun Tun-
nels are easy to install and extremely effective for bringing light in. They work by capturing light on the roof and directing it downwards into a highly reflective aluminum tube – the light comes through the ceiling of the home, distributing light evenly throughout the space. Look for sun tunnels that are designed for reliability and performance like ones from Velux, which have an integrated pan
and dome assembly to prevent leaks and allow for condensation drainage. The more daylight you can invite indoors the better you’ll feel. Daylight is free, and it’s the ultimate green energy source. These natural light solutions are simple, clean and elegant home improvements that boost the beauty and brightness of your home without raising your bills.

The TTC ran plenty of extra service during the Games, including earlier Sunday subway starts, and received sterling reviews for the most part. With the Pan Am portion of the Games over, the TTC is largely back to regular levels of summer service. But there’s still shuttle service planned to venues holding the Parapan Am Games when they kick off Friday, Aug. 7.

Uber allows users to order a car using a mobile phone and has grown exponentially popular – to the chagrin of traditional cab drivers – for its ease of use. The carpool feature allowed two passengers headed in the same direction to share the cost of a single ride.

Uber’s Pan Am carpool service was a hit, according to the rideshare provider. Approximately 33,000 people made use of uberPOOL during the service’s two-week trial run during the Games, the company said in a statement. Most of the trips took place in the downtown core and on Games HOV lanes that were

Queen’s Quay was recently re-opened after an ambitious redesign. But with increased traffic comes confusion – and sometimes fisticuffs – as evidenced by a recent video of an altercation between a cyclist and pedestrian captured right on the street, which added signage hasn’t been able to prevent. I even saw a vehicle traveling on the Martin Goodman Path on Saturday night, which is supposed to be reserved for cyclists’ use. Rahul Gupta is The Guardian’s transit reporter. Pan Am Games’ traffic plan declared a success Though data still being gathered, UTCC confident travel times improved RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com
not provide figures indicating how well the transit commission did providing transportation options for tens of thousands of Games goers. When the numbers are released, UTCC spokesperson Andrew Posluns is confident they’ll show travel times improved during the Games. “We are seeing an improvement in travel times across the region and we see the plan we spent those years putting in place is working,” said Posluns last Friday. “But one of the things we’re mindful of is we’re gathering information from a lot of sources. And we will need to take that away and do our due diligence and make sure we can verify what we’ve seen before putting out a definitive assessment as far as how we’ve done for travel times during the Games.” Posluns, UTCC executive director, was part of a team tasked with continuously monitoring Toronto region roadways during the Games. Made up of members from police and emergency, transit as
The multi-partner agency responsible for co-ordinating traffic during the Pan Am Games is confident its transportation planning proved a success, even though it’s not yet ready to release any data indicating so. The Unified Transportation Coordination Centre (UTCC), which continuously monitored Toronto region roadways before and during the Games, is not ready to release any official transit stats. The Pan Am Games ended Sunday. There’s also no information available from the Games’ Integrated Security Unit as to how many tickets were issued for misuse of special carpool lanes designated primarily to transport Games’ athletes and personnel. That information could be made publicly available as early as this week, said ISU spokesperson Devin Kealey. The TTC’s Brad Ross also could

Despite initial objections from the public, traffic didn’t seem to get much worse during the Pan Am Games, even with High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes in effect, like here on Hwy. 404.
well as various municipality and city agencies, the UTCC was tasked with coming up with a viable plan for keeping Toronto moving, which included temporary carpool lanes, the opening of a $25-million transportation management centre as well as entreaties to the public to modify commuting routines. The UTCC also co-ordinated responses to emergencies and sent notifications to the public when a traffic situation arose.
While such communication between official agencies is hardly new, what was different was that the scale of the Games afforded a unique opportunity for collaboration, said Posluns. “This is definitely the first time a group like this has been assembled together to manage an event of this scale,” he said. “We’re thrilled to be able to operationalize the Games, keeping in mind they are the largest multi-scale event to take place in
Canada with over 30 venues.” Anecdotally, it seems traffic did reduce during the Games. Fears of widespread gridlock and stranded athletes didn’t materialize, and following a week of outcry once the Games began, use of the temporary HOV lanes didn’t prove overly burdensome for most. There were no mass transit shutdowns or delays forcing Games attendees to miss their events. Posluns attributed much of that success to years of planning plus pre-Games consultations with residents and businesses, which provided early notice of the possible traffic pressures. Smart Commute, the Metrolinx agency that advocates and organizes carpool programs for businesses, also did its fair share of outreach that included offering support services to employers before and throughout the Games. Following the introduction of the HOV lanes at the end of June, more than 1,000 new users signed up for Smart Commute’s services, said Vanessa Barrasa from the agency.

TTC pledging better off-peak rides on busy bus, streetcar routes RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The TTC is pledging improved crowding conditions on 33 busy bus and streetcar routes during off-peak travel periods. The routes in question will see more frequent service, shorter wait times and offer riders a far greater opportunity to get a seat outside of the usual rush hour times, promised TTC chair Josh Colle, who was joined by Mayor John Tory and Etobicoke North Councillor Vincent Crisanti for the announcement. Colle said the move reverses past service reductions to off-peak service through TTC budget cuts mandated during the mayoral term of Rob Ford, which resulted in regularly overcrowded buses and streetcars and more discomfort for riders. “I think we got to a point where the previous administration was saying just cram as many people onto a bus as possible and it will take care of itself,” said Colle during a press conference Monday at Finch Station, which has six bus routes slated to receive better off-peak service as of September. “By implementing this service improvement we’re addressing crowding standards and moving toward more comfortable and customer-friendly levels. We’re listening to our loyal and very patient customers.” The new service will be funded through a $95-million budget boost made by city council earlier in the year for the TTC’s annual operating needs, and includes previously announced commitments for better all-night bus service and an enhanced 10-minute-or-better network. The funding commitment also funds the TTC’s recent move to make service completely free for kids. Currently the TTC’s off-peak loading standard for frequent service routes is to carry more riders than seats – articulated buses large enough to seat 46 have an acceptable standard of 53, for example – a move which was made simply to save money following the 2012 cuts, admitted TTC deputy CEO Chris Upfold. That will change as of September. “This move today is to say it doesn’t actually makes sense to have a different crowding standard based on the frequency of service,” said Upfold. When it comes to starting Sunday subway service at 6 a.m. – which was the norm during the 2015 Pan American Games – TTC deputy CEO Chris Upfold said while discussions are taking place, a permanent shift is “a long way away.” Earlier than usual subway openings were made possible thanks to additional staff deployed during the Games. But there’s no plan as of yet to change the current practice of beginning Sunday service at 9 a.m. because of essential maintenance required after the subway closes at 2 a.m. on Saturday night. “That critical period between Saturday night and Sunday morning is when we do our heavy maintenance,” said Upfold, following Monday’s announcement at Finch Station. “We are looking at a variety of ways how we can tweak that, but that is an important time.” Upfold suggested the time needed for maintenance periods could be reduced once re-signalling for the Yonge-University-Spadina line is completed five years from now. But he insisted there will still be a need for maintenance work. “As we get out to 2020 and 2021 (maintenance) is something that becomes easier, but it’s still difficult to do,” he said.“On Saturday night when service turns off at 2 a.m., we literally have an army of people going down there to maintain the signals, the tunnels, the tracks,” he said. “We need that time to do that.”

Rexdale residents unite in community garden Big on Green Co-op and MicroSkills help bring garden project to fruition ALI RAZA etg@insidetoronto.com What was once a small, abandoned plot of land beside two Rexdale apartments has now blossomed into a vibrant community garden, growing everything from basil to zucchini. As part of an initiative with Big on Green and MicroSkills, some 20 to 30 residents of the apartments at 2667 and 2677 Kipling Ave. have toiled on this small patch of dirt since the project’s beginnings in January 2014. Upon its completion this month, donors, contributors, residents and supporters were given a tour of the garden space. “Having met some of the residents here at 2667 and 2677, and learning of their desire to have a garden we felt we were well-situated to
help resource their vision for their own community,” said Big on Green executive director Halyna Zalucky. “I think they (residents) recognized that a community garden is a place where people can come together, a place where kids can play safely and an opportunity for people to learn and connect to the environment.” Big on Green learned the residents’ desire to have a garden while working on a green project at the Rexdale Community Hub. The hub is home to a living wall – a garden structure in the building home to several plants and flowers. “I felt it was definitely a project that was within our mandate,” Zalucky said. “We fundamentally work with priority neighbourhoods and we’ve been starting our work mainly in Rexdale.”

While some residents own their own plots in the garden, most share among other residents in the building. The garden gives them the opportunity to eat, sell and share the wide variety of produce. Resident and primary gardener Faith Senior served a lunch made from vegetables from the community garden
to the tour group. She said the garden is something she’s wanted for a long time. “It’s really relaxing,” she said. “I love to go over there all the time, even if I’m tired or down. I go there and feel 100 per cent.” Senior discussed hurdles that gardeners still have to overcome, like trimming

trees to allow more sunlight and making better use of rainwater. Improvements are planned for the garden as there remains more land to expand and even an opportunity to plant some fruit trees. The Home Depot donated the mulch, the fence, and the wood to maintain the soil pits, to the gratitude of Zalucky and
Senior. The patch of soil has been transformed into a fully enclosed garden with pathways and even raised soil pits for residents with limited mobility. Administration of the garden has so far been informal, with members of the residents’ committee planning and organizing the maintenance of the garden. Ward 1 Councillor Vincent Crisanti paid a visit to the garden during the tour, highlighting its ability to “bring the community together.” Big on Green Worker Co-operative Inc. is a social enterprise that promotes sustainability in local communities and businesses. Community MicroSkills Development Centre is a nonprofit organization serving communities in Toronto with settlement and employment needs for immigrants, youth, and low-income families.

Board of trade launches a Trade Accelerator Program MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Loonie tanking? Economy shrinking? Now’s the perfect time to become an exporter, the Toronto Region Board of Trade says. The Greater Toronto business group launched a Trade Accelerator Program, TAP GTA, this week to help local companies export - and not just to the United States. “A lower Canadian dollar, limited domestic growth and a strengthening U.S. economy have established the right conditions for Canadian firms to go global,” the TRBOT says. In its latest Scorecard on Prosperity report, the board is critical of the GTA’s pronounced lack of exporters, especially when it comes to the growing markets of East and South Asia. It’s holding our economy
back, and keeps Toronto from reaching its potential, the report suggests. The bulk of Ontario exports go south to the U.S., but those fell from $153 billion in 2003 to $129 billion in 2013, and increased sales to other countries failed to make up the difference. But the TRBOT says it doesn’t have to be this way: Toronto companies can sell high-quality specialty foods to China, for instance, or education and training to India. After all, the report says, diversity in Toronto “is peerless with 47.9 per cent of its population foreign-born,” and the region is “well-positioned to benefit from our highly-educated and globallyconnected newcomers.” Earlier this year, TRBOT CEO Jan De Silva said she hoped 1,200 companies will go through GTA TAP in the next three years, and that a
third of them “activate” as exporters. De Silva said she’s expecting TAP will create success stories, and start people thinking “if these companies can do it, we can do it too.” Companies exporting only to the U.S. sometimes think they lack the resources to look at new markets, or it’s difficult to find agents in new countries, she said. De Silva said they should consider using overseas partners, or selling through e-commerce. “It’s a good way of getting your toe in the water.” Business owners can also engage international students from target countries while they are in Toronto to help export “back home,” De Silva suggested.
