All-female hockey teams taking part in tournament Girls will rule the rink this weekend, as the third annual Pink the Rink tournament in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month takes over 14 south Etobicoke arenas – including the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence. Presented by The Etobicoke Dolphins Girls Hockey League, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary season, the Pink the Rink III tournament boasts its biggest ever attendance roster this year – with 150 all-female teams (that’s more than 2,500 players) from across Ontario and beyond participating, said tournament director Ned Italiano. “We have a lot of teams coming from far away: 10 from Sudbury, some from Sault Ste. Marie and North Bay, 15 from the Ottawa area, and a handful from the U.S.,” he said of the Oct. 19 to 21 tournament. “It’s going to be a celebration of female hockey.” Adding to the celebrations will be a series of “pink” fundraisers, including a pink puck toss, visits from a pink moose and pink pig, and a pink cement truck. All participants will also be encouraged to wear pink, and all proceeds raised will go towards Breast Cancer >>>FESTIVE, page 24

MPPs react to McGuinty’s resignation TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Days after Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty made the announcement he would resign, his Etobicoke Liberal MPPs spoke of work still to be done. McGuinty declared in an emer-
gency caucus meeting early Monday night that he would step down after nine years as premier and prorogue or suspend Parliament, to the sharp criticism of Opposition Leader Tim Hudak and NDP Leader Andrea Horwath who want the house to continue to sit while Liberals organize a leadership convention.
“I was surprised, too,” former McGuinty cabinet minister, Etobicoke Centre MPP Donna Cansfield said Wednesday of the premier’s announcement. “But I respect his decision and I understand his decision. “There is no question we were in a stalemate in the house. My own bill

aime Redford is driven. The 17-year-old is Glee show choir founder-director at Lakeshore Arts, attained her Grade 9 level for vocal music at the Royal Conservatory of Music and organized a four-day exploration of Pinery Provincial Park near Grand Bend, Ont. with her family that included cycling 85 kilometres a day. For her efforts, Prince Edward presented Redford and 33 other young Ontarians the Duke of Edinburgh gold award of Achievement at a ceremony last month attended by Lt.-Gov. David Onley at the Design Exchange in downtown Toronto. “I like community involvement, but this gave me the nerve to take more leadership positions. It gave me new confidence. It pushes you to go above and beyond. It’s a good way to be recognized and encouraged for things you love to do,” the Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School student said of her Duke of Edinburgh gold award. building, physical fitness and expeditions. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards celebrated 50 years of Making a Difference to Youth in Canada, a new campaign that launched with a website. Community service is volunteer contribution that creates a sense of personal and community responsibility. Skills can be the pursuit of any of more than 200 hobbies or vocational skills. Physical recreation promotes health and self-esteem. Adventurous journeys are teamwork expeditions in new places.
Redford’s service includes being a rapelling instructor, volunteering with Mimico Co-op’s waste and recycle program and being a school ambassador. She cycles, swims, plays badminton, skates, runs cross-country and hits the gym. For two summers, Redford has worked as a musician and historical interpreter at Fort York. She cycles along the waterfront trail from her Mimico home. The teen would like to pursue post-secondary studies in vocal performance and environmental studies, perhaps leading to an environmental law degree. “It enhanced what I was already doing,” Redford said of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program. “It gave me the determination and motivation to see it through. I was more committed to sports practice, for instance, because you have to write it down. It builds your work ethic.” Redford achieved a Duke of Edinburgh’s bronze award in Grade 9 and silver award in Grade 10. She encouraged everyone to do it. “Anyone and everyone should do it. You’re not limited, no matter what your skill set, what your interests. It encourages you to go full throttle. It shouldn’t be this huge hurdle. Just do it.”
Etobians honoured for work in community It was a Jubilee week earlier this month in Etobicoke-Lakeshore, as six Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medals were presented to local heroes. Etobicoke-Lakeshore MPP Laurel Broten, who nominated 14 recipients within her riding for the medal, said she was “proud” to be given the opportunity to do so. “Their spirit of contribution is fittingly recognized with the Diamond Jubilee medal, and we are lucky to have them in our community,” she said in a statement. Those recently honoured with Jubilee medals include: n Sister Conrad Lauber, director at Village Mosaic, an outreach centre where seniors come together to engage in a wide variety of programs. Lauber’s dedication and compassion provides a welcoming, comfortable and inviting space to engage in numerous relationshipbuilding activities. n Arden Lambe, a longtime community volunteer who works tirelessly with local organizations like Lakeshore Lodge and Storefront Humber to improve the lives of seniors and families. Her depth of commitment, quality of service and devotion to community span
over a decade. n Helen Harakas, executive director of Windfall, a non-profit organization that receives and distributes new clothes and basic needs items in the hopes of alleviating poverty and fostering new hope. Harakas looks beyond challenges to raise awareness about social justice issues. n Halima Saad, who founded and runs Madbakh Women’s Initiative, an outreach organization for women and children in the Somali community. Saad’s volunteer work gives young people opportunities for the future. n Jacques St. Pierre, a graduating student of Etobicoke School of the Arts and an active member of his school community. His efforts to raise awareness about bullying prevention are helping to foster a culture of acceptance for all students. n Amber Morley, a youth advocate who helped to spearhead the South Etobicoke Youth Assembly (SEYA) in an effort to steer youth away from bad decisions and make positive differences in the Lakeshore community through active participation and by organizing events and programs.

Transit must remain priority for new leader D
alton McGuinty’s announcement Monday night that he is stepping down as Ontario’s premier and proroguing the provincial legislature has opened a number of interesting scenarios for Toronto’s many Liberal MPPs. Say what you wish about the timing of McGuinty’s move, Toronto residents can expect a number of their provincial representatives to be serious contenders for the Ontario Liberal Party’s leadership. Toronto has been good to the Ontario Liberals, showing them strong support in the last three provincial elections. After majority government wins in 2003 and 2007, the Liberals formed a minority government in 2011 and would not have done so without Toronto’s backing. More than a third of the Liberals’ 53 seats at Queen’s Park belong to Toronto MPPs. We have strong political influour view ence in the party, and that will be reflected once the race to Toronto MPPs replace McGuinty heats up. Part of McGuinty’s legacy is understand transit. He created the provincial transit authority Metrolinx transit needs with the mandate to build and fund transit across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Whoever replaces him must continue to make transit in the GTHA a priority. Any MPP from Toronto will clearly understand the importance of the transit file, and it should be a major plank in the campaigns of those running for the party’s leadership. Ontario Progressive Conservative Party leader Tim Hudak was at Toronto City Hall Tuesday morning to talk transit at a meeting scheduled before McGuinty made his announcement. He will be making transit and traffic gridlock a key issue when we do get a provincial election call, presumably sometime after the Liberals pick their new leader. Flanked by a number of city councillors including Mayor Rob Ford’s brother Doug, Hudak looks as if he’ll have no problem working with the Ford administration at city hall. McGuinty was also able to work with Ford. In a statement on McGuinty’s decision, Ford said, “While we had different political views on some issues, Mr. McGuinty and I always had a very good working relationship as mayor and premier.” Maintaining that good working relationship with Toronto’s mayor will be crucial for whoever is chosen as the Ontario Liberal Party’s next leader. Toronto must fund its own transit
I
t’s been a long time since anyone has illustrated the argument for madein-Toronto transit funding solutions as well as our soon-to-be-former Premier Dalton McGuinty did Monday night. McGuinty’s surprise resignation was not only as leader of the Liberals and premier of the province — but as the remaining steward of Toronto’s current light rail transit expansion plan. That $8.5 billion plan, for light rail on Eglinton, Finch and Sheppard avenues, is the reliable base-line for hope, for those who wanted to see faster transit to suburban communities. We’ve dreamed of other plans, of course. Mayor Rob Ford briefly created a convincing enough scenario in which the private sector might build subways to Scarborough. TTC Chair Karen Stintz created an even shorter-lived scenario in which Toronto might have as many new transit routes as burst capillaries on an old drunk’s nose. And now, the morning after McGuinty’s exit announcement, there are indications that even the $8.5 billion light rail plan
THE CITY
david nickle
isn’t that reliable. Tim Hudak, the leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, stopped by Toronto City Hall to affirm his preference for a Mayor Ford-style subway expansion. Although the days are early, it’s fair to say that Hudak’s chances of being the next premier of Ontario are excellent, as are the chances that Ontarians will be given the opportunity to weigh those chances in an election within the next six months. What happens to the $8.5 billion in light rail funding if that happens? Well, it’s up to Hudak. Work’s already started on the Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown line, and unless the Progressive Conservatives want to develop a reputation as the kind of government that fills in holes on Eglinton (as the Mike Harris government did there in 1995) there will
probably be some form of light rail transit there. But if the decision gets made to bury the rest of the line, that will take care of most of the $8.5 billion right there. And Finch and Sheppard will be unfunded. When will subway funding come? “When I am the next premier, we will use whatever dollars are available to build underground,” he told reporters. Uh huh. Toronto’s decision earlier this year to look into funding transit expansion on its own starts to look pretty good, given all that — because really, with a provincial government deep in deficit, whatever money’s available won’t pay for much light rail, let alone subways. It’s pretty clear, as we move into our suddenly very muddy future the only reliable way to get around this town by bus, subway or light rail, is to belly up to the table and put our own money down. n D a v i d Ni c k l e i s T h e Guardian’s City Hall columnist. To the editor: Re: ‘TTC should be privatized,’ Letters, Oct. 5 W.D. Adamson is eager to privatize the TTC yet he seems to forget where it came from. It is fairly common knowledge that when they built the TTC tram and subway lines, it was an investment of millions of dollars of public money. Then when they built the Skydome, it was with more public money. Then Hwy. 407, with more public money invested. Ontarians were told the road would eventually be toll free after it was paid for. Then when they needed money to pay the taxes or maintain and improve them, nobody wanted to pay. The privateers figured ‘hey, let’s just wait a bit and we’ll get something for nothing when the government sells them’. The Conservatives under Mike Harris eagerly sold the 407 to get the province out of debt, leaving Ontarians with the knowledge that the highway they had built was no longer theirs and had become a new toll highway that they had paid for, only now it was owned by a foreign company who would be charging Ontarians to use it. The TTC has been on life support since the Harris Tories reneged on the province’s portion of subsidies forcing greater strain on the city. Given its tenuous situation, we’ll see what kind of bargain price the city and province can come up with should they decide to give away another pillar of the common good to balance their books in the short term. And that’s if there is any debate. Privatization should be front and centre, but not because it’s the solution. Thanks to privatization, billions of dollars in public money have been funneled to private interests and the more we push for it, the more our hard earned money will end up in their pockets. Is that what you want? Eugene Spanier

fraud of 92-year-old woman Police believe there could be more victms Police have released the photos of two men arrested this week for allegedly defrauding a 92-year-old Etobicoke woman of more than $138,000, believing there may be more victims. The investigation began back on Friday, April 13 when police were called to a home in the Burnhamthorpe Road and Shaver Avenue North area for a case of fraud. It is alleged that two men from Richmond Hill-based Taylor Made Construction approached the elderly woman and solicited repairs to her home. Police allege the men would then make the woman worry on a daily basis about major repairs needed to her house in order to be safe – requesting

Mitsubishi RVR sports new look for 2013 The Mitsubishi RVR compact crossover is revised inside and out and receives updated driving characteristics for 2013. A redesigned grille opening, new front fascia and bumper contribute to a sleeker, more integrated up-front appearance, particularly around the fog lamps and lower cowl. At the rear, the new bumper design with re-designed marker lamps offers smoother lines and balanced design. A revision to the multi-link rear suspension improves handling and ride comfort. As well, RVR’s INVECS III Sportronic Continuously Variable Transmission has been recalibrated for better acceleration perfor-
mance. Rounding out the 2013 changes are new interior accents and fabrics (for GT), a new push-type selector switch for 4WD (on SE and GT) as well as new exterior colours White Pearl and Quick Silver. The Mitsubishi RVR features a standard 2.0-litre, 148 hp inline four-cylinder engine and is one of the most fuel-efficient crossovers in Canada with a highway rating of 6.1 L/100 km. In front-wheel-drive ES and SE models, the engine is mated to a standard five-speed manual transmission, with optional CVT available for the SE. All-wheel-drive SE and GT models receive the CVT and all-wheel control featuring 2WD/4WD Auto/4WD Lock drive-
mode selector. The starting price on the 2013 Mitsubishi RVR ES model is $19,998, and $22,298 on the SE model. All-wheel-drive SE and GT models have starting prices of $25,698 and $28,998, respectively. – Metroland Media

While considered a lower tier than major junior A hockey (of which there are no Toronto teams), the loop can field some fine talent especially players who aspire to a U.S. college career, which would otherwise be forfeited if they played major junior A, and with up-andcoming players who may be a year or two away from playing major junior A. The Patriots are off to a respectable start with 16 points in 11 games. Check out the league at http://ojhl.pointstreaksites. com/view/ojhl/

Politics
Opposition parties call for legislation to resume >>>from page 1 all four of his kids were under age 8.” “Testy, difficult and rancorous” is how Cansfield described the envi-
ronment in the house leading up to McGuinty’s announcement: “We were getting nowhere.” MPPs debated one bill, to give seniors or their families a $1,500
tax credit toward home improvements to help them stay in their homes, for an astounding 110 hours, Cansfield said. “For these folks to say that
proroguing Parliament is stalling democracy, they themselves weren’t promoting democracy,” Cansfield said, noting she will retire after her current term in office.
Both Hudak and Hor wath expressed the importance to job creation, and ongoing parliamentary debate over ORNGE air ambulance and the cancellation of two power plants in Oakville and Mississauga, for Parliament to continue. EDUCATION PREMIER While some have called McGuinty the “education premier” with postHarris reinvestments in schools and the launch of all-day kindergarten among his achievements, the Ontario government is currently at loggerheads with public school teachers. McGuinty insisted he wanted to prorogue the assembly for several months to concentrate on publicsector wage restraint. In a statement, Minister of Education Laurel Broten said her work will continue. A former parliamentary assistant to McGuinty, Broten could be seen wiping tears during McGuinty’s news conference. “I am honoured to continue serve in the McGuinty government. My focus will remain on my job as Minister of Education, Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues and MPP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore,” Broten said. “There is more work to be done, and I am committed to continuing to build on the progress that we’ve made over the past nine years for children and families in Etobicoke-Lakeshore and across the province.”
to offer you unsurpassed paint quality and unique colours you won’t find anywhere else.
RUNNING FOR LEADERSHIP? Broten did not comment on whether she would consider a run for the Ontario Liberal leadership. On Tuesday night, McGuinty warned his cabinet ministers that contenders for the leadership would be required to renounce their cabinet post to level the playing field among potential candidates. Etobicoke North MPP Shafiq Qaadri said it has been a privilege to serve under McGuinty. “It has been a great privilege to serve under the Premier. He is great Canadian and deserves our gratitude and respect,” he said in a statement. Benjamin Moore stores are different. They’re the only places you’ll find Aura® paint.
