Councillors too late to save Etobicoke’s oldest industrial building TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The recent demolition of Mimico’s oldest industrial building has reignited debate around how the city can better protect properties it considers of cultural heritage value. Etobicoke York Community Council had expected to vote Oct. 13 on a city heritage staff recommendation that Toronto council state its intention to designate The Schindler Company of Canada Ltd. building under the Ontario Heritage Act, and add it to Toronto’s inventory of

heritage properties. Instead, councillors learned Freed Grand Park Development Inc., the building’s new owner, had applied to the city on Aug. 18 for a demolition permit soon after it took possession of the property that month. Freed received the permit Sept. 12. In recent weeks, Freed legally demolished the one-storey, brick-clad industrial building. Councillors voted unanimously to refer the matter to Jennifer Keesmaat, the city’s chief planner and executive director of city planning, with >>>MORE, page 3

More heritage staff needed to protect sites >>>from page 1 a request to work with area Councillor Mark Grimes and Freed on the future of the building’s tower feature. Grimes said he spoke with the developer and asked that the tower which was not initially demolished be saved. The Guardian contacted Freed for comment, but did not receive a reply prior to deadline. Mitchell and Dorst built the factory in 1923 on the northwest corner of Audley and Newcastle streets, occupied by Super Seal Paint, Varnish and Colour Company Ltd., a Sept. 27 city planning staff report indicated. In 1933, The Schindler Company of Canada Inc. assumed tenancy on the site. Schindler manufactured musical instrument strings, tennis racquets and fishing line on the site for more than 55 years. The question on councillors’ minds: how did this happen? Brian Mooney, chair of the Et o b i c o k e Yo rk Co m m u n i t y Preservation Panel, told councillors the panel first flagged the heritage value of the building in May to Toronto council’s planning and growth committee. The preservation panel are volunteers who monitor sales, demolition or building permits on properties of heritage interest. Grimes asked Mooney why the panel did not recommend in May the property be added to the city’s heritage registry to flag any future demolition permits. “We had other things going on. It’s partly our fault,” Mooney said. Grimes replied: “I’m not laying blame. You do great work on our behalf.” Neil Cresswell, Etobicoke York District community planning director, explained “unless a building is listed or designated, the (city’s) chief building official cannot withhold a (demolition or building) permit.” The Schindler building had no such protection. Mooney lamented the loss of the building, particularly its tower and the Schindler sign painted on it. “It may not be the most beautiful

building in the world. But remember, heritage is not just about saving buildings; it’s about saving culture,” Mooney said. “It’s important to preserve that history... It’s important to recognize Mimico as what it was and how it grew.” In June, Toronto council adopted the Mimico-Judson Secondary Plan which noted that the Schindler property demonstrated “heritage character”, and that its “adaptive reuse be considered especially as it sits adjacent to an area identified and proposed for public park land.” Mooney said the panel then went to the city’s heritage preservation services and the Toronto Preservation Board about the Schindler property. Councillors then asked questions of John O’Reilly, a city assistant heritage preservation services planner. Over the summer, O’Reilly said a colleague had been conducting extensive research into the history and potential heritage value of the building. Freed is proposing a phased, multi-block, mixed-use development of five residential apartment buildings, ranging in height from six to eight storeys along Portland Street, and tall buildings of 16, 23, 25 and 32 storeys at the south end of the property. “It was rumour. It was nothing more than rumour. We hustled and moved things around to bring this (report) forward as quickly as we could before the Toronto Preservation Board and this council,” Cresswell said. “We, in fact, accelerated this report when we heard the rumours.” Grimes and Cresswell agreed: city planning needs more heritage staff to prevent future building losses. “I’m a heritage supporter. If there is any blame here, it’s at council as a whole for not funding this heritage division,” Grimes said. Cresswell said the city hired three new heritage planners last year, but it is still not enough. “The amount of work out there overwhelms our staff. We’d need to hire 10 times the staff. That’s not on.”

City of Toronto/PHoTo

Mimico’s oldest industrial structure, the Schindler Company of Canada building (seen above still standing), was recently demolished to make way for a proposed multi-block, mixed-use development of eight to 12 storeys along Portland Street at Audley Street, with buildings of 16, 23, 25 and 32 storeys proposed at the site’s south end at Newcastle Street.

Baby animals at the zoo signify reproductive win

WRitE uS

E

veryone loves baby animals. Visitors have flocked to see the brand new additions to the Toronto Zoo, which include Juno the polar bear cub, Rey the zebra filly, and arguably the most popular, the panda bear cubs Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue who recently celebrated their first birthday. While seeing the cute baby animals are worth the price of admission, what’s equally impressive is the work that goes behind the scenes to bring these animals to life – literally. The special report this week explores the fascinating world of Dr. Gabriela Mastromonaco, curator of the Toronto Zoo’s reproductive programs and research. OuR ViEW She along with her team and visiting scientists work together Work helps to investigate problems related reproduction in non-domestic to conserve to species. It’s always preferred for animals species to breed on their own, notes Mastromonaco, but sometimes there are behavioural or medical issues at play. Other times, it’s a lack of a suitable partner that prevent mating to occur, in which case semen that is collected to freeze for insemination might have to be flown in. The problem could also lie in not creating the right environment or mood for animals to procreate. Mastromonaco, who works with more than 50 species a year, admits though trying to figure out exactly which fertility treatments work and which ones don’t is still an ongoing challenge. But whatever the issue a particular species might have, the Toronto Zoo’s goal is to assist with the care and management of both captive and free-ranging populations in an effort to maintain reproductive health and ensure the preservation of genetic diversity. In other words, the zoo hopes to produce offspring to keep the numbers of endangered and vulnerable species up. That includes the polar bear, the Indian rhinoceros, cheetah and giant panda, to name a few, as listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, an international organization focused in the field of nature conservation.

column

What to call the young Leafs line? I need your help loyal readers. The reason I’m reaching out is that I have a funny feeling that the Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Zach Hyman trio is going to end up getting dubbed “The Kid Line.” It’s not that it isn’t a catchy phrase. It is. Or isn’t a fitting phrase. It’s that, too. Very much so. The problem is, it’s not original. There already was a Kid Line. On your very own Maple Leafs, in fact. From 1929 1936. The line consisted of centre Joe Primeau, in between right winger Charlie Conacher and left winger Harvey “Busher” Jackson, all of whom are in the Hockey Hall of Fame. I remember that line like it was yesterday. No, not because I was around back then, smarty pants. That was way before my time. Yes, way. Very way. How way is besides the point. I only remember it like

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY it was yesterday because it was yesterday that I made a point of going back and looking up The Kid Line’s bios again. What prompted me to do that was seeing all three grace the Top 100 Maple Leafs list of all time that was introduced during that special centennial celebration at the Air Canada Centre before the opening home game last Saturday night. I seemed to recall that they were even younger than the current young troika but I wanted to make absolutely sure. It turns out I was right. When it comes to kids being kids, they indeed were more junior than today’s group. Primeau was only 23, and Conacher and Jackson were both just 18 when they all first hit the ice together.

Meanwhile, left-winger Hyman is 24, right-winger Nylander is 20 and centre Matthews is 19. There have been a few more Kid Lines since then in the NHL, but the name only caught on with the fans of the teams they played on. There is only one real Kid Line. Primeau, Conacher and Jackson. So no Kid Line 2, OK? Or Kid Line II. Over to you. The ball is in your court. If you can say that when talking about hockey. But you better get the lead out. Or the ink out, if you’re using a pen instead of a pencil to come up with a name. There’s no way of knowing how long Matthews, Nylander and Hyman will remain a unit. Coaches typically like to experiment with different combinations in order to keep the players from getting complacent or having them get comfortable with a bunch of players, but also to give

the team different looks to keep the opposition off guard. They could each have two different linemates if you wait too long. A unique name is a must. Matthews, Nylander and Hyman deserve a handle created just for them. With that in mind, that means ixnay to the New Kids On The Block, which I fear is likely running a close second to Kid Line. Not just because it is also associated with another group, but more importantly the New Kids On The Block aren’t kids anymore. They’re all pushing 40-something. What’s more, it’s probably been a while since they’ve been anywhere near the block, let alone on it. They’re likely everywhere but on the block when you get right down to it. Councillors vote to push Etobicoke trails work forward Project may go ahead despite MTO’s QEW bridge work Tamara Shephard tshephard@insidetoronto.com The city has identified monies to fully fund the Sherway Trail Link, and is working to proceed with its construction next year despite the Ministry of Transportation’s planned Queen Elizabeth Way bridge replacement work. The joint city and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) restoration project envisions a 0.7-kilometre section of trail and vegetation restoration to provide a safe and convenient connection under the QEW for pedestrians and cyclists to connect with the lake and the waterfront trail. TRCA and city parks, forest and recreation staff had planned to begin work on the Etobicoke Creek Trail improvements at the QEW overpass next year.

But MTO is planning major rehabilitation work on the QEW overpass starting in 2018 in the area of the planned trail improvements. The work is expected to last four to five years. “We can’t wait for the MTO,” said EtobicokeLakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes. “Can we design it to make that connection while we’re waiting for MTO?” Etobicoke York Community Council unanimously supported Grimes’ five-part motion at its Oct. 13 meeting with respect to three Etobicoke trail links: Sherway, North Etobicoke and South Mimico. Councillors recommended Toronto council request the city parks’ general manager to continue working with the MTO to finalize an easement required to support the Sherway and North Etobicoke

recommend Toronto council request the city’s parks general manager continue to explore partnership and funding opportunities with Metrolinx and other agencies to help fund and implement the North Etobicoke and South Mimico trail links. “This is a tremendous opportunity. We’re behind Mississauga and its trail north of Eglinton,” said Etobicoke Centre Councillor Stephen Holyday of the North Etobicoke trail link. “We want to continue that work south of Eglinton at Centennial through Councillor Di Ciano’s ward and connect to the Lake Shore. There are beautiful trails through wooded valleys that connect to the lakefront trails.” Councillors requested the city’s parks general manager update community council in the second quarter of 2017. Toronto council will vote on community council’s recommendations at its Nov. 8 meeting.

special report

Procreation problem solvers get a little wild The reproductive physiology unit at the Toronto Zoo helps animals make babies Fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com For two years, the female patient suffered from irregular menstrual cycles. Doctors were about to explore assisted fertility options when she became pregnant on her own. In another case, fertility specialists were stumped as to why another female patient could not conceive - until a recording of rain shower sounds was enough to get her in the mood and get the job done naturally. Those treated by Dr. Gabriela Mastromonaco aren’t your typical patients seeking reproductive assistance. T h e y a re h o u s e d i n Scarborough’s Toronto Zoo, specifically selected for artificial insemination in hopes of producing offspring to keep the numbers of their species up and, if possible, releasing these animals back into their natural habitats. INVESTIGATING PROBLEMS According to the Toronto Zoo, it’s the only Canadian zoo with a reproductive physiologist on staff. Located within the Animal Health Centre, the reproductive physiology unit is made up of two laboratories, the endocrinology lab and gamete biology lab, where staff, students and visiting scientists work together to investigate fundamental problems related to reproduction in non-domestic species. The goal is to assist with the care and management of captive and free-ranging populations in an effort to maintain reproductive health and ensure the preservation of genetic diversity. Mastromonaco, curator of the Meadowvale Road and Old Finch Avenue zoo’s reproductive programs and research, said it’s always preferred for animals to breed on their own, but for a number of reasons - some known, some not - that might be easier said than done. There could be behavioural

or medical issues at play, or lack of a male paramour, in which case semen would have to be flown in. Very much similar to fertility testing humans go through, animal hormones are tested in a lab to look for abnormalities, cycles are monitored, and semen is collected to freeze for insemination, Mastromonaco said, adding she works with more than 50 species a year. And like humans, animals can go on birth control pills the same women would use - if the zoo isn’t trying to breed a particular species, she said, adding the gorillas are currently on contraception. The Toronto Zoo’s reproductive program, which began in 1988 (prior to this all breeding was done naturally), lends its support to other zoos, primarily within Canada, Mastromonaco said. And though she’s been at the program’s helm for a decade, she still has a lot to learn about the reproductive health of the animals treated. The zoo’s animals typically try to conceive on their own for two to three years before Mastromonaco and her team step in, who will then evaluate “why babies aren’t coming,” she said. Sometimes the issue isn’t physical. Sometimes it’s as simple as creating the right atmosphere - hence the rain shower music.

Ryan Pfieffer/METROLAND

THE LYNX They might not be the most popular draw at the Toronto Zoo, but the Canada lynx still claws in quite the crowd. Ember and her two female kittens, who were born sometime in April 2016 (the exact date is not known as Ember locked herself in a den for days before emerging with her new offspring), delight both national and international visitors who want to see animals native to Canada. The kittens, who have not been named, are playful and relaxed, and will stay with Ember until next spring, said Brad de Wolde of Enniskillen, Ontario, zoo keeper of the Canadian domain. The siblings spend their days climbing, exploring, and learning hunting skills from their mom, while feasting on a diet made up of ground and raw meat on bones. Bearing a close resemblance to a giant house c at , the Canada lynx has a very short body, small tail, and long legs. It can be found in the wild in boreal forests across Canada, from Newfoundland to the Yukon, along with Western Manitoba, Idaho, Washington, and Utah. But as easy as that may sound, pinpointing fertility treatment and what works and what doesn’t is still something Mastromonaco

is figuring out. An Indian rhino calf lost a pregnancy because she didn’t have enough progesterone to sustain it. Cheetahs have undergone treatment for five or six years without producing offspring. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), an international organization focused in the field of nature conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, has listed the Indian rhinoceros, polar bear, cheetah, and giant panda some of Toronto Zoo’s biggest draws - as vulnerable. Come next year, the reproductive program currently housed in two rooms inside a 40-year-old building will move into a state-of-theart facility, which will allow Mastromonaco and her staff

more research equipment and space to house and transfer animals more easily, she said, adding the old site will be used as a curatorial lab. Bison insemination is the next “big project” for Mastromonaco, adding the zoo has kept 35-year-old bison sperm frozen in the lab. “As long as the samples are frozen, we can bring them back,” she said. “We can breed across time and space.” The cost of artificially inseminating an animal is $500 to $600 a try, with invitro fertilization running $3,000 to $4,000 a pop. But, with certain species dangerously close to extinction, such as the Grevy’s zebra, “you can’t put a price” on reproduction, she said.

Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue act like typical twins: teasing each other, play fighting, and competing for mom’s attention. Except these twins walk on all fours, are black and white, and will eventually munch on bamboo, their food of choice. Born at the Toronto Zoo Oct. 13, 2015, the giant panda cubs are still very much a crowd favourite, with visitors lining up for hours to catch of glimpse of them and their mother, Er Shun. Da Mao, one of three potential fathers, is housed in a separate enclosure. The first giant panda cubs born in Canada, Jia Panpan (Canadian hope), and his sister, Jia Yueyue (Canadian joy), are still bottle fed, although they like to chew on bamboo, said giant panda zoo keeper Emily Noel of Mitchell’s Corners, Ontario. Weighing in at 20.5 pounds, Jia Panpan loves to play, knocking his sister off a wood plank as they roll on the ground. The smaller of the two, 16.5 pound Jia Yueyue is the more shy, independent twin, according to Noel.

Street named after park visionary Thomas Riley Tamara Shephard tshephard@insidetoronto.com A private road will be named after the late Thomas Riley, Etobicoke’s only commissioner of parks and recreation. Etobicoke York Community Council adopted a city engineering and construction services’ recommendation to name the private street at 5365 Dundas St. W. Thomas Riley Road. Concert Properties Ltd. applied to the city to name the proposed private street within its development Thomas Riley Road. A Sept. 23 city staff report indicated area Councillor Justin Di Ciano supports the proposal, and that Riley’s family gave their consent. Riley joined the township of Etobicoke in 1961 as sports supervisor and quickly rose to director of recreation in 1963. He became commissioner of parks and recreation services in 1970, a position he held until his retirement in 1997 on the cusp of the city’s amalgamation. Riley had a vision for Centennial Park. acres of parkland, and negotiated to get more than 200 additional acres from the province. That acreage created the park, which opened during Canada’s Centennial in 1967, and paved the way for the Etobicoke Olympium, Centennial Arena, Centennial Conservatory, and the ski hill and chalet. Riley considered Centennial Park one of his proudest achievements. “The citizens of the former city

of Etobicoke owe a great debt to Tom for his foresight and hard work to make sure that we had the best parks system in the country, which we do have,” former Etobicoke mayor Doug Holyday said at Riley’s memorial held in July 2013 at the park. Family, friends and as many as 36 former colleagues remembered Riley at the memorial as a determined visionary, a gentle and generous man, and a politi-

cally astute leader committed to recreation for all. Holyday also spoke of Riley’s introduction of off-hours use of community schools for recreation, walkable community parks within neighbourhoods, and a $10,000 matching city grant program Riley launched in Etobicoke for parents and community groups to fundraise for new park playground equipment. Then Etobicoke City Council

renamed Central Park at Dundas Street West and Islington Avenue “Tom Riley Park” at Riley’s 1997 retirement. Riley is inducted into the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame, and was the recipient of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal, Province of Ontario Corps D’Elite and Canada 125th Medal. Riley died March 15, 2013 after a brief battle with cancer. He was 79.

CONSUMER FEATURE

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

Led by Chef Maxine Knight, the hands-on workshop teaches parents and girls aged seven to 17 how to prepare “fun, healthy and delicious meals” with vegetables harvested from the centre’s own garden, said Executive Director Emma Asiedu-Akrofi. “The chef teaches cooking, nutrition, and general kitchen safety and knife-handling skills. And for the most part, what the girls learn in the class they take home with them,” she said of the program, which just kicked off in September. “We’ve been told the girls have begun cooking dinner for their parents and families using the recipes they learned at the centre, which is great to hear.”

Don’t settle for poor-quality vinyl windows; our window’s Fibrex® material is two times stronger than vinyl. Fibrex is a wood composite that has the rich, elegant look and feel of finely-crafted wood windows without the maintenance.* Many of our installers have over 10 years of experience. They are so trained and skilled, most installations—including the cleanup—are completed in just one day. We take responsibility for the entire process, including warranting the windows, patio doors and installation.* And because we’re the replacement division of Andersen Windows—the company with a 113-year-old reputation for superior window engineering—we’re not going anywhere.

I brought my parents for lunch. The service was excellent and the waitress was so helpful with settling my parents into their seats. My Mom really enjoyed her liver and onions. Fish and Chips were delicious.Very comfortable atmosphere. We'll be back !

Mimico Correctional Centre started out in 1913 as the Ontario Reformatory – Mimico. This was a time when prisons were starting to be seen more as places of reform than of punishment. To achieve this, new prisons were being built to provide work for inmates, often outdoors, in a pleasant environment and, for some inmates, housing with no surrounding fences. The Ontario government discovered a shale deposit on 80 hectares of land they owned on the east side of Kipling Avenue, between Evans and Horner avenues. The province established the Toronto Brick Company (renamed Ontario Brick and Tile Company by 1920) and taught the inmates a range of skills: extracting shale from the ground, manufacturing bricks and tiles, packaging goods and transporting to the rail siding, and even building their own dormitories. There was also enough land with good soil to establish a working farm. This operation included fields for hay, oats, vegetables, pasture and orchard; buildings such as barns, silos, hen houses, root cellars and hog pens;

denise harris history corner and educational programs on planting, tending and harvesting. During the Second World War, the site was turned into a prisoner of war camp called Camp 22. Most inmates were merchant seamen captured by Allied troops. Of the 23 POW camps in Canada, this was one of the few near a big city and residential neighbourhoods. renamed In 1 9 6 8 , t h e f a c i l i t y was renamed the Mimico Correctional Centre. That year, inmates produced 275,000 bricks and 12 tonnes of tile. Other inmate workshops produced 4,829 slippers, 662 picnic tables, and 449 rolls of snow fence. However, the Ontario Brick and Tile Company was closed the next year as a result of pressure from labour unions who believed the plant was taking work from their members. Mimico Correctional Centre closed in 1975, but gradually reopened during

the 1980s, reclassified from minimum to medium security. In 1994, it opened to house maximum security inmates as well. Mimico Correctional Centre closed permanently in 2011. It was replaced by the Toronto South Detention Centre at 160 Horner Avenue, the second largest jail in Canada (after the Edmonton Remand Centre). This new facility opened in 2014, replacing the Toronto Don Jail, the Toronto West Detention Centre, and the demolished Mimico Correctional Centre. It consists of a maximum security building housing up to 1,650 accused offenders awaiting trial, and a medium security building called the Toronto Intermittent Centre, housing up to 320 inmates serving their sentences in installments. I think we’ve moved a long way from that 1913 prison ideal of outdoor work, in a pleasant environment, with no fences.

If you’re missing half the conversation, the latest digital hearing aid technology will astound you! Imagine a hearing aid that scans your environment 100 times per second, analyzing and balancing every sound individually. You’ll enjoy a natural listening experience, even in noisy environments, such as a busy restaurant. And nobody will notice it because of its miniature size, fitting comfortably and discreetly behind your ear.

Because this new hearing aid collects and digitally processes 360 degree sound, it’s been shown to reduce the strain that effortful listening puts on your brain. In fact, this technology improves speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-of-the-line hearing aids! Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about and adjustments are easy to make, even from your smart phone. Now you can focus on what you want to hear, Comfortable & Discreet and switch your attention when desired with less brain fatigue. Most importantly, you’ll stop worrying about your hearing and get back to enjoying conversations with your friends, colleagues and loved ones. Don’t wait any longer – A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation.

Cars making short trips could be replaced by bikes, says report A new report suggests 716,000 short car trips across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) could be made by bicycle instead. Co-authored by the Toronto Centre for Active Transportation and Ryerson University the report analyzes current regional cycling trends. It finds of the 14 million trips taken every day in the GTHA, the vast majority are less than five kilometres, but only six per cent of such trips are made walking or cycling. The report

BECK TAXI DRIVERS HEADING TO COLLEGE Centennial College has launched a new training program for new Beck taxi drivers. The course was announced back in the summer as a replacement for a city-administered workshop which was mandatory for all new taxi drivers, teaching them about Toronto geography, customer service and other driver skills. With recent changes to taxi licensing regulations, resulting

TTC subway buskers will be a little more prominent in the stations thanks the establish-

ment of designated performance zones. The zones have been established on a temporary basis at Bloor-Yonge, Finch and Spadina and Main Street stations. The six-month pilot initiative allows the TTC’s subway musicians to perform on a branded vinyl stage intended to raise their profiles. It’s the first time according to the TTC any move has been made to spotlight its subway performers, and if it proves a success, the zones could appear at more stations. Seventy-five subway musicians are chosen from auditions held during the Canadian National Exhibition every three years. They rotate through 25 stations.

STATION BUS BAY TO REOPEN wWOODBINE The Woodbine station bus bay is about to open after several months of construction. While renovations continue at the station, the rebuilt bus loop will officially reopen Monday, Oct. 24, allowing buses to enter Woodbine for the first time since May. During the construction, temporary stops were placed on Strathmore Boulevard. Woodbine accessibility work is still ongoing, which will include the addition of a station elevator plus an additional subway entrance at Strathmore and Woodbine Avenue. Presto fare gates are also supposed to go up by the end of the year.

Team Canada at the World Triathlon Championships on Sep. 15, 2016. Kirsty is the practice manager at Park Lawn Dental in Etobicoke and has actively competed in triathlons since 2011. She attributes her success to her passion for the sport and her dedication to active living. “When I am not taking care of my two amazing daughters or working, I am busy training and competing in triathlons,” says Kirsty. “Health and fitness are important to me on a personal level, but also extends into how I promote optimal health to those around me.” Along with her 1st place finish this year in Toronto, Kirsty fin-

ished 1st in her age group at the National Championships in Ottawa, and 7th overall. Her achievement qualifies her for the World Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 2017. Kirsty has a strong network of supporters including friends, family and coworkers. She teamed up with her sponsors, Park Lawn Dental and dentalcorp for support while representing Team Canada. “Kirsty has worked with me since 1997 and I have always admired her dedication to fitness,” says Dr. Walter Yim of Park Lawn Dental. “The entire team was honoured to be part of her journey and so proud of everything she has accomplished.”
