Transit top priority for MP-elect Maloney
inside It’s a family affair at the EPO on Friday night / 3
THE

Liberal James Maloney won decisively in EtobicokeLakeshore Monday night in a riding that has supported the federal Liberals for most of the past two decades. Maloney, 51, defeated Conser vative incumbent Bernard Trottier, 50, who wrestled the lakefront riding from the Liberals in 2011. Maloney Maloney won with 54 served per cent support, besting as interim Trottier’s 32 Ward 5 city per cent by councillor nearly 14,000 last year votes. The Hughes Amys partner and civil trial lawyer’s successful first run mirrored the red wave across much of Canada that catapulted Justin Trudeau’s Liberals to a strong majority government with 184 seats. Successes of Liberals in Toronto and suburban 905 bolstered the Liberals’ fortunes and contributed to the failure of Stephen Harper and his hard-right majority government. Maloney immediately cited improved transit and infrastructure as his top priorities. “Canadians today voted for >>>maloney, page 9

Students take in Ultimate Nerf Party Students from Sir Adam Beck Junior School were treated to a shoot-em-up good time at a special Ultimate Nerf Party last weekend – and it’s all thanks to fourth grader Matteo Vecchio. Nerf – the company best known for its line of colourful, foam-based ‘blasters’ – held a contest on YTV.com urging kids to write in with why they deserve the Ultimate Nerf Party, and Matteo walked away with the top prize. “Matteo won because he’s a huge Nerf Fan, as well as a huge supporter of his sister Jessica, who was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) at just 20 months old,” Matteo’s mom, Kristen Vecchio, said of her son. “Matteo has helped to raise awareness for JIA, as well as raise over $23,000 for the Department of Rheumatology at the Hospital for Sick Kids in Toronto.” For his reward, Matteo was allowed to invite all of his grades 1 to 5 classmates at Sir Adam Beck to his own personal Ultimate Nerf Party, which was held on Sunday, Oct.

and the new Nerf Blasters. All the guests also appeared as extras in a short film called Zombie Strike Fan Tribute Film, which, of course, starred Matteo as the hero.

Internationally known, Torontobased violinist will perform; while EPO will play her mom’s composition ALI RAZA razaa08@gmail.com The Etobicoke Philharmonic Orchestra (EPO) will open its 35th season this Friday celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sibelius as well as putting the spotlight on an esteemed motherdaughter duo from Toronto. The mother, Elizabeth Raum, an East York native, won’t actually be in attendance but her composition, titled Banquet Hall from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, will be performed. Daughter Erika Raum, a renowned violinist who also lives in Toronto with her husband and four children, on the other hand, will be there, and performing not on her mother’s composition but on Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor. After the mother-daughter presentation, EPO will play Symphony No. 2 in D major by Jean Sibelius in honour of the 150th anniversary of his birth. “We’re hitting a lot of things with this concert,” said EPO music director Sabatino Vacca. “The mother-daugher relationship for the first half and the second half is celebrating Sibelius. It’s quite a well-rounded program, I think people will enjoy it start to finish.” Elizabeth’s works include three operas, 60 chamber pieces, 17 vocal works and several more ballets, concerti and orchestral works. Now retired, she used to play in the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra (Symphony Nova Scotia as it’s known today) before moving to Regina and playing in the symphony there for 35 years as principal oboist. “I started writing compositions a long time ago and got hooked,” Elizabeth said. “Sometimes you find your calling.” The piece on Sir Gawain and

Erika Raum, a distinguished violinist, will be guest performing Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64 by Felix Mendelssohn at the Etobicoke Philharmonic Orchestra's season opener on Friday, Oct. 23. While EPO will perform a piece written by her mother, Elizabeth Raum.

the Green Knight is a musical from of one of King Arthur’s stories. It includes several parts that describe, musically, the events of the story, including a bassoon solo that represents a bard telling the tale of Sir Gawain. Erika, meanwhile, needed no introduction to the selection by Mendelssohn she will perform on, having first learned it when
she was 12 years old. “It’s like the greatest example of the form,” she said. “It’s the first virtuosic concerto most violinists learn and the oldest piece I have in my repertoire.” Erika’s connection to music began early in her childhood with both parents (father Richard was principal trombone player with the Regina symphony) being professional musicians. She’s since created a strong career in music for herself but always remembers what her parents taught her. “I have complete respect for them as musicians,” she said. “They’re extremely talented, intelligent and experienced people whose opinion I trust.” EPO’s 35th season includes several performances throughout the year. Vacca has been the music director since 2010 and is very excited for this year’s performances.

t appears voters believe Justin Trudeau is, in fact, ready to become the Prime Minister of Canada as the red tide of Liberal support swept the country and all of Toronto Monday night. With a majority government, the federal Liberals now have a strong mandate to implement their policies and the priorities they outlined during the 78-day national election campaign. It’s time now for Toronto residents, who voted in the Liberals in all 25 local ridings, to make sure the election promises and commitments to invest in our city are kept by the Prime Minister Designate and the newly elected MPs. Start by getting to know your local Liberal MP, many of whom are first-time politicians. As it is a government, they will be our view majority your voice in Ottawa for the next four years. City’s priority And while majority governare more stable, it becomes issues must ments even more important to hold the be addressed party in power accountable to run an agenda that is in the best interest of those who elected them into power. The next four years with a co-operative federal government that is friendly to major cities can go a long way in building community at a very local level. Just as Mayor John Tory outlined in his congratulatory speech, Trudeau’s commitment to cities includes investments in building transit, affordable housing, repairing social housing and other major infrastructure needs. These are all top priority issues for Toronto, which can’t be addressed by just one level of government. In a city as large and complex as ours, the federal government must be a major player in helping provide a solution to these ongoing issues. Since we also have a majority Liberal government in Ontario, we are hoping they can work very well together to the benefit of Toronto and other big cities in the province. Even if you didn’t cast a ballot for the Liberals, the incoming MPs are elected to represent all constituents in their riding. Keep them accountable to the “positive politics” that Trudeau seemed to champion throughout the campaign. Tory said he is looking forward to working with Trudeau on Toronto’s issues. So should we.

Cold fall weather passing with flying colours It was chillier than usual for mid-October last weekend. Not surprisingly the unseasonable weather kept a lot of the locals inside. Too bad. They missed a golden opportunity to check out some great fall scenery. Take my favourite nature trail, Cedarvale Ravine. The dip in temperature provided a multitude of stunning sights that one normally doesn’t experience this time of year. I didn’t have to go far for my first breathtaking view either. After just one step on the venerable path, I immediately came across a majestic yellow-bellied turtleneck. I couldn’t believe my good fortune. It was on a park bench behind the Heath Street entrance of St. Clair West station. I didn’t want to scare it away, so I tip-toed over in hopes of getting a closer shot with my camera. It appeared to be whistling what sounded like the OK, Blue Jays theme song. I listened for a few verses,
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY but then was distracted by a an eye-catching dark black double-breasted trench coat. And get this: it was standing upright against a tree warbling with a peach pullover. I kid you not. Wow. I’d been out for all of a minute-and-a-half and I’d seen all this already? I felt like I was in selfie heaven. As much as I enjoyed the show, I was eager to see what else was out there, so I headed down the hill. Within seconds, a flurry of baby blue toques went whizzing by. On their heels was a flock of white long-sleeve shirts. Both groups came and went in the blink of an eye. I made a mental note not to blink anymore. I wanted to make absolutely sure I didn’t miss a thing. I moseyed along and as I looked at the steps leading to a bridge high above, I
caught a glimpse of four sets of maroon mountain boots scurrying up in perfect sync. There was a quartet of matching red and white scarves around their necks flapping away in the breeze. I rounded the bend and staring at me was a pair of deep brown wooly socks. They were peeking out from beneath some pale gray sweatpants. I was snapping away furiously. I knew I would need to have proof. No way anybody would believe me if I said I had seen all this stuff in one morning. As I headed past the fenced off area for dogs, the pooches were barking away at each other and at the pink mittens and gold gloves watching them. Over the hill next to the tennis court I saw a beige cardigan perched next to a lavender hoodie. On the soccer field across from them a green vest was enjoying the company of an orange balaclava. As I continued on I came
across a cornucopia of turquoise trousers, lavender sweaters and purple parkas. It was surreal I tell you. I was there until early afternoon and then headed home. On the TV weather report the meteorologist said temperatures would be back to normal for the weeks ahead. So I raced back to the ravine. As fate would have it, that yellow-bellied turtleneck was still at the same park bench. I joined him for a more few choruses of OK, Blue Jays and then called it a day. And what a day it turned out to be. No question the season always gets good marks, come rain or come shine. But last weekend clearly proved fall will pass with flying colours when you add a little cold into the mix, too. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? ALI RAZA razaa08@gmail.com Etobicoke Nor th was painted red as incumbent Kirsty Duncan won her third consecutive term as Liberal MP on Monday night. What polls predicted would be an easy win for Duncan came true as she surged forward just after two polling stations were counted. She finished with 26,281 votes – 62 per cent of votes. As her lead continued throughout the night, Conservative candidate Toyin Dada and NDP candidate Faisal Hassan clashed head to head before Dada overtook Hassan to finish a distant second place with 10,075 votes – 24 per cent of votes. Dada, a community activist who has volunteered in over 18 organizations, was not available for comment. During the 78 days of campaigning, Duncan said she never rested. The riding has been Liberal since 1988, with

He’s my former seatmate and he will honour his promises. We need more than transit. We need more help for our families and we need affordable housing. These are some of the issues I’ll be bringing up. – Kirsty Duncan upon winning her term in Ottawa
Duncan as MP since 2008. “I ’l l b e i n t h e o f f i c e tomorrow,” Duncan told The Guardian at her campaign party, which was attended by over 100 supporters of all ethnicities and backgrounds. As Duncan made her way through the sea of red-clad voters to personally thank each one, she couldn’t hold back her tears of happiness. “It’s continuing the work we do,” she said when asked what she had planned with
the newly elected Liberal majority government. “We look after our families and we serve our community. It’s the community I was born and raised in. It’s the community I love.” Duncan was an associate professor of health studies at the University of Toronto and sits on many health advisory boards. Duncan is confident newly elected Prime Minister -elect Justin Trudeau will deliver on his campaign promises of investing in infrastructure, working with provinces and helping the middle class. “Thank you to the people of Etobicoke North,” she added.

>>>from page 1 change. Not only change, but real change,” Maloney said at his victory party to the exuberant cheers of his supporters. “In Etobicoke-Lakeshore, change means a lot of things. It means investment in infrastructure. It means investment in the Westwood Theatre Lands. It means better transit right here in the Lakeshore. It means putting a transit hub on the (former) Christie lands. Real change in Etobicoke-Lakeshore means unity.” Maloney counts local councillors Mark Grimes and Justin Di Ciano as friends, and has a good relationship with Liberal MPP Peter Milczyn, he said. Maloney was interim councillor for five months in Milczyn’s Ward 5 when Milczyn resigned to serve as MPP. “When I say unity, I meant that,” Maloney said Wednesday morning. “We have a unique opportunity with councillors Di Ciano and Grimes and MPP Milczyn to work together. Working with other levels of government is what the job is supposed to entail. I’m hoping we can be an example.”

Winning Etobicoke-Lakeshore Liberal candidate James Maloney greets supporters as he arrives at his Maple Leaf House election night headquarters on Monday.
Maloney said he is “very optimistic” the new Liberal majority government will invest in transit in cities across the country where the Harper Conservatives did not. “Certainly, there is reason to be optimistic,” he said. “Toronto and Ontario are looking for fed-
eral government co-operation and funding.” Trottier was elected in the 2011 federal election’s blue wave. That election saw the Liberals gutted. The federal Liberal Party suffered its worst election result ever, fell to third place nationally,

and lost its Toronto stronghold for the first time in nearly two decades. Even then Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff lost his EtobicokeL a k e s h o re s e a t t o f i r s t - r u n Conservative Trottier. Trottier took 40.4 per cent support to Ignatieff’s 35.1 per cent. “It has been a real honour to have constituents place their confidence in me,” Trottier said in an interview Tuesday. “These national waves are really what predominate. There is only so much you can do at the local level. We saw it last night across the GTA, the Atlantic provinces, and throughout the country. A (blue) wave moved in 2011. Another wave moved this time.” Some 70 per cent of eligible Etobicoke-Lakeshore voters cast a ballot Monday, “good news for democracy,” Trottier said. Nationally, voter turnout was 68 per cent, the highest turnout at the polls since 1993. Trottier said he would like his legacy to be a “commitment to customer service” of constituents. “For awhile in EtobicokeLakeshore... the MP really needs
to be present in the constituency,” Trottier said, making a veiled reference, but not naming names. “I wish James well. I hope he maintains that presence, and I’m confident he will.” Maloney signaled that he would. “This has been a dream of mine for a long time,” he said. “But it’s not about me. It’s about the people who live here. I’ve been inspired by Mark Grimes, who serves people with distinction. “I’m going to work incredibly hard over the next four years in a Liberal majority government.” Lawyer Phil Trotter ran for the NDP. He took 11 per cent of the vote. Angela Salewsky, a business development manager in the security industry, won two per cent support for the Green Party. Liz White with the Animal Alliance Environment Voters Party of Canada won 297 votes. Janice Murray, who has run in the riding for the MarxistLeninist Party of Canada for more than decade, took 168 votes. A Forum poll last month put Maloney in the lead with 41 per cent to Trottier’s 33 per cent.

federal election
MP has ‘long list’ of local priorities to address >>>from page 1 election. “It was a red tsunami that hit the Atlantic coast, and the wave just carried through. When we started seeing those numbers, I realized ‘oh my goodness, we now have an opportunity.’ “We talked a lot about hope and hard work these last 78 days. Hope was the message that inspired Canadians, but now the hard work begins – to deliver on the promises we made during this election campaign.” Here in Etobicoke Centre, Wrzesnewskyj took home 32,712 votes (or 52.8 per cent) to Conservative incumbent Ted Opitz’s 23,075 votes (or 37.2 per cent) after a rematch campaign that pitted the owner of Future Bakery and M-C Dairy against the former Canadian Forces lieutenant colonel who narrowly ousted him from office during the 2011 federal election. While the 26-vote margin of his defeat four years ago led to a recount, allegations of procedural irregularities and voter suppression, and a bitter court challenge – one Wrzesnewskyj ultimately lost at the Supreme Court of Canada – Wrzesnewskyj’s healthy 9,637-vote cushion this time around

has given him a strong mandate to pick back up where he left off. Among his “long list” of local priorities, Wrzesnewskyj said he’ll seek to re-introduce several of his private members’ bills from his three previous terms as Etobicoke Centre’s representative in the House of Commons from 2004 to 2011 – bills that went
“out the window” every time those minority governments fell. Chief among them will be Boris’ Law – a piece of legislation he first introduced back in 2010 in memory of slain Etobicoke teen Boris Cikovic, who was gunned down in Buttonwood Park on Oct. 3, 2008. “It was shocking enough to get
that call that Boris had been shot and killed,” Wrzesnewskyj said of the murder of Cikovic, whom he’d affectionately called ‘Boris with an I’ since meeting the 17-year-old as a youngster. “But what was even more shocking to me was that (one of the men involved in the shooting) was apprehended, was not cooperative, but was still released on bail to the community. How can someone who has just been involved in the shooting of a 17-year-old boy be walking around in the community?” In response, Boris’ Law seeks to make bail conditions tougher for perpetrators of crimes committed while in possession of a firearm. Pushing through the Liberal party’s National Seniors’ Strategy is also on Wrzesnewskyj’s priority list, as representative of a riding that boasts the second highest percentage of senior residents per capita in the country. Funding for public transit infrastructure to ease traffic congestion for “the average Etobian who is spending approximately 45 extra minutes every day in commutes” than they were 10 years ago is also a priority, as is eradicating the late night flights to Pearson International Airport that
veer noisily over residential communities in Etobicoke. “The table is set, and there are so many things to do,” Wrzesnewskyj said of his upcoming fourth term representing the people of Etobicoke Centre. Opitz, meanwhile, said he’s looking forward to some downtime to consider his options moving forward in the wake of his unsuccessful campaign for re-election. “I think I’m not going to make any decisions yet without talking to my wife – and the first thing she wants is a vacation,” he laughed, when asked if he’d consider running for office again in four years. “Life carries on and we move forward, but I’m very grateful to the riding, to the people, to the exchanges at the doors,” he added, noting that his hardworking team of volunteers hit almost 70,000 doors over the course of this 2015 campaign. The other candidates running in Etobicoke Centre included: the NDP’s Tanya De Mello, who took 7.9 per cent of the vote; the Green Party’s Shawn Rizvi, who won 1.5 per cent of the vote; and Rob Wolvin of the Progressive Canadian Party, who took 0.6 per cent.

Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System
What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the

McNicoll Bus Garage plans rolling along The McNicoll Bus Garage took another small step to becoming reality as TTC officials were expected to present preliminary design concepts for the project at a public meeting in Scarborough this week. The $181-million project received a major boost over the summer when the Ontario Ministry of the Environment signed off on the last major legislative hurdle for the project. In doing so, it dismissed the concerns of a vocal group of north Scarborough residents that opposes the garage primarily on health grounds. Their concer ns were deemed baseless by the TTC, as well as the Toronto Board of Health. As the daylight hours wane, Cycle Toronto is encouraging cyclists to Get Lit. The group, along with Toronto Police Services and other sponsors, is promoting an advocacy campaign to educate cyclists about the dangers of riding in the dark without proper lights. Unlit cyclists who are spotted can receive a set of front and rear bike reflectors for free. As the group notes, along
with being extremely dangerous, it will now cost cyclists $110 in fines for not having proper lighting. Look for Cycle Toronto’s bright orange Get Lit tent near Castlefrank Station on Tuesday, Oct. 27 starting at 6 p.m. Cycle Toronto fundraising ride Cycle Toronto is also organizing a fundraising bike ride this weekend in and around the Annex. The group is looking to raise $50,000 in donations and is asking participants to either fundraise or pay $75 for one of 200 slots for the 20-kilometre ride Saturday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m., starting at the Centre for Social Innovation, 720 Bathurst St. The registration fee covers entry into the ride’s after party as well as “swag” for riders. Bombardier fails to deliver low floor streetcars on schedule RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Bombardier will not be able to meet a revised schedule for delivery of the TTC’s new low floor streetcar fleet. The company has informed TTC staff it can only guarantee completion of 16 of the new vehicles by the end of 2015, seven short of what it promised in a revised delivery schedule agreed to earlier this year. “I am incredibly disappointed to learn Bombardier, yet again, will not be meeting their commitments to deliver new streetcars to Toronto,” said TTC Chair Josh Colle in a statement. “They have let down the TTC, our customers, the good workers in Thunder Bay, and all Toronto residents. We will not let Bombardier’s incompetence hold our patient and loyal customers hostage. We will consider all legal and financial actions at
our disposal to address this situation.” In response to the news, which was made public on the Oct. 16, TTC staff is recommending pursuing a $50 million legal action against the company for late delivery. It is also recommending seeking further damages to cover maintenance costs for the existing streetcar fleet, which must continue to operate in the absence of the new vehicles, and for running supplementary bus service plus unspecified operating and customer impact costs. Back in June, TTC staff expressed serious doubts Bombardier could adhere to a revised schedule for delivering the new streetcars as part of a $1.2-billion agreement originally made in 2009 to replace the existing fleet, which includes vehicles dating back to the 1970s. Under the terms of the original agreement, Bombardier was sup-
posed to have had 67 of 204 new streetcars in service by now. There are currently 10. The delays – which Bombardier has blamed on production and labour issues – prompted Colle and TTC CEO Andy Byford to arrange a visit in June to the company’s Thunder Bay factory to inspect the production process firsthand. The TTC has also granted multiple extensions to Bombardier for the streetcar contract and engaged in discussion with senior company officials to get the order back on track, but all to no avail. A staff report, which will formally recommend seeking compensation from Bombardier, is expected to be presented to the TTC board for approval during its Oct. 28 meeting. Some TTC board members have also expressed the desire to exclude the company from bidding on future TTC contracts.

Sam Smith Park is great for walking and bird watching TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com
A
wetland lookout at Colonel Samuel Smith Park is the latest extension of a successful outdoor education program in the rare, naturalized waterfront park. “The old one was leaning and had been burned,” said Barbara Keaveney with Citizens Concerned About the Future of the Etobicoke Waterfront. “The railing was coming off. Kids’ programs go down there. It was in quite a state of disrepair.” Keaveney also sits on the park’s stewardship organization, Friends of Sam Smith Park (FOSS). “The jewel of the Lakeshore – a tranquil, waterfront sanctuary of
wetlands, woods, shore and meadow,” is how FOSS describes the park. The recently retired Etobicoke elementary teacher secured a Weston grant in recent years to develop an outdoor education program in the park. The grant also funded the new lookout. Four years ago, Keaveney reached out to Humber Arboretum staff to encourage them to offer their nature programs in the park. Last year, 1,800 local elementary and high school students took part. Halfday and full-day classes are offered. Humber College supplies two classrooms to the program at its Lakeshore campus adjacent to the park.

Citizens Concerned About the Future of the Etobicoke Waterfront’s Barbara Keaveney stands on the newly rebuilt pond lookout at Col. Sam Smith Park on Saturday.
“There is a whole list of topics teachers can pick based on the curriculum and grade,” Keaveney explained. “They can study whatever fits into what is in the park. It’s a perfect match. Humber Arboretum at Humber College in the north, and the park is at
Humber College in the south.” The arboretum books the program, and provides nature interpreters. “It’s amazing how many people and schools are so close to that park and don’t get in there,” she said. “Once they go, that
woodcock. Residents are welcome to pull on their boots and participate in a tree planting in the park Saturday, Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A ribboncutting ceremony at the lookout is also planned. The focus, Keaveney said, is to get more people to appreciate Colonel Samuel Smith Park. “Several people with CCFEW and a number of people on the walk really know birds,” Keaveney explained of CCFEW’s regular bird walks. “But about half the people now are from the neighbourhood who see the signs and just want to go for a walk. “It’s about the park, not the birds. We’re really trying to get more people into the park.”
Check out photos from the bird walk on page 39.
CCFEW’s bird checklist has boasted 197 bird species for many years. The list is comprised entirely of birds seen in the lakefront park. In September, two new birds were seen – a scarlett tanager and a Cape May warbler. “It’s pretty strange,” Keaveney said of finding new birds to catalogue. “But it’s kind of neat. It’s exciting. The whole point of the list is to know what birds are in the park.” Last weekend, two more new birds were seen and catalogued – a Wilson’s snipe and an American

To r o n t o C i t y C o u n c i l has changed its mind on implementing a system of ranked ballots in the 2018 election. In the last term of office, council voted to ask that the system, which allows voters to choose councillors and mayor in order of preference, be permitted in the revised City of Toronto Act. But at their September and October meeting, councillors balked and supported a motion by EtobicokeLakeshore Councillor Justin Di Ciano to ask that the province maintain the existing ‘first past the post’ system. That system means that a
candidate with the support of far less than half of voters can take office. Under a ranked ballot system, first, second and third choices would be tallied until one candidate had a clear majority.

Lakeshore BIA Halloween walk helps those with PTSD Families invited to dress up and support cause CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Super heroes, zombies, witches, ghosts, and even princesses – all are invited to this year’s second annual Halloween Lakeshore Walk and Fundraiser. Founded last year by the Lakeshore BIA and former city councillor Chris KorwinKuczynski, this year’s family friendly event will take place rain or shine on Saturday. The event features a 1.5-km walk departing from The Armoury, 70 Birmingham St., at 1 p.m. sharp, a best costume contest, a Jack-oLantern competition, children’s activities, refreshments and more. “It should be a really fun afternoon, so we’re inviting everyone to dress up, come out and have fun, while supporting a really great cause at the same time,” said project leader Sandra Finkelstein. Originally aimed at supporting Canadian military families through fundraising efforts at the Toronto Scottish Regiment-hosted event in
south Etobicoke, this year’s Lakeshore Halloween Walk has expanded to support first responders of all stripes in their battle against posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health issues. Event organizers have joined forces with Finkelstein, the CEO of 2bempowered Inc., and Lorne Simon, cofounder of R.I.D.E. CHECKS, to broaden the scope of the event. “We came on board this year to sort of bring it to a bigger level as far as reaching out beyond the Toronto Scottish Regiment, to the Toronto Police Service, Toronto Fire Service and to Toronto Paramedic Service,” Finkelstein said. She added that the walk aims to bring awareness and foster resiliency for Canadian Armed Forces, paramedics, fire and police services and their families by funding the Mood Disorder Society of Canada’s (MDSC) Peer Support Program. A national, not-for-profit health charity, MDSC’s peer support program is one that has developed a team of advisors to “share their knowledge and experience” of PTSD and other mental health disorders, within both formal and informal peer groups.
Syd A. Gravel, a retired, 31-year veteran staff sergeant with the Ottawa Police Service, said there’s no substitute for such groups, which allow victims to be among people who are going through the same things. “A peer can offer an employee an unique kind of support versus that offered by a more formal mental health, medical and social services approach,” Gravel, a PTSD survivor and author of How To Survive PTSD and Build Peer Support, said in a statement. While the Lakeshore H a l l o w e e n Wa l k a n d Fundraiser is a free event, Finkelstein said donations from individual walk participants and local business sponsors will be gratefully accepted towards the fundraising goal of $2,500. The event will kick off at The Armoury, 70 Birmingham St., on Saturday at noon with registration, followed by opening remarks at 12:45 p.m. and the walk at 1 p.m. sharp. Post-walk events, including a pumpkin carving contest, best costume contest, Thriller dance-off, activities for kids and refreshments, will run until about 4 p.m.

Canadian Tire Rexdale hosted an outdoor fun day for kids last Saturday. More than 100 children played baseball-themed games to build teamwork and camaraderie during Ju m p s t a r t G a m e s D a y at Rexlington Park near Islington Avenue and Rexdale Boulevard. Management of the Canadian Tire retailer, at 2025 Kipling Ave., won the day in a national Wakefield Canada Castrol Oil Contest for increasing in-store sales of Castrol products. The Rexdale Canadian Tire was one of only four winning stores across Canada. This year, Jumpstart celebrates its 10th anniversary and its millionth child to be given the opportunity to get into sports. Canadian Tire Jumpstart is a national charity that helps kids aged four to 18 from families in financial need participate in organized sports and physical activities.

Available Bachelorette Jane, 43, is a beautiful, sweet girl who is a nurse and looking for the right man. Jane has never been married and has no children. She loves football, hockey, going to concerts, and being outdoors. She is very down to earth, and easy to get along with. Jane does not drink or smoke. She is not one to go to bars, and she has had a hard time meeting the right person in her small community. She is always up to try new things and open to new experiences. Jane is a bit shy at first, and she is nervous about dating, but really wants to meet the right person to settle down with. She is very open and accepting of people, she’s very non-judgmental, and cares more about who someone is on the inside rather than on the outside. She is looking for a good man who is energetic, fun, adventurous, has a good sense of humor, down-to-earth, and a little bit romantic.
