Sherway Gardens to undergo $350M renovation

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke’s Sherway Gardens is set to get a $350-million facelift starting in January – an expansion and renovation project aimed at revitalizing the popular, 41-year-old shopping centre. The 45-month revitalization project at the Cadillac Fairview-owned mall will see the construction of a two-level, 210,000-square-foot retail addition on the north side of the building in an existing parking lot, a new three-level parkade with an extra 1,200 parking spots on the west side of the addition, and the introduction of several new retail clients, including the Toronto area’s first Nordstrom department store. Clive Baxter, senior vice-president of Cadillac Fairview, said that while Sherway Gardens is already one of their best-performing shopping centres, this revitalization will “amplify” everything that has made it a favourite destination for the “increasingly affluent, discerning shopper” Sherway attracts. “It’s fabulous. This is a great property that has a great position in the west end of the GTA. The case of a 16-year-old girl who fell 14 storeys to her death from an Etobicoke apartment building early Tuesday morning is being probed by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). Toronto police responded to an emergency call at 52 Mabelle Ave. (in the Bloor Street West and Islington Avenue area) sometime after midnight Tuesday morning. Upon arrival, officers reportedly saw the girl hanging from a fourteenth floor balcony. While the officers tried to speak with her from an adjacent balcony, the girl fell to the ground to her death. The Coroner’s officers notified the SIU – an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault – about the incident on Tuesday morning. Anyone with information is asked to contact the lead investigator at 416-622-1925.
n Mugging suspects sought
A 35-year-old man had to be transported to hospital for injuries sustained during a mugging Friday, Oct. 12 near Hepworth and Redgrave drives. According to police, two male suspects approached the victim at around 6:20 p.m., struck him with an unknown object and then sprayed him with “an irritant.” The victim was transported to hospital by Toronto EMS, where he was treated for his injuries. The suspects are described as follows: the first is black, aged 15 to 18, 5’8”, with a thin build; the second is black, aged 15 to 18 years, 6’0”, with a medium build.

Sports hall of fame hosts gala induction dinner TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The owner of an iconic Etobicoke sports store, one of Canada’s alltime best triathletes, two star NHL players and president of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment are the latest inductees into the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame. Jim Sturino will retire after this year’s dinner, his 13th as Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame chairman. “I’ve enjoyed it,” Sturino said, noting he joined the hall in 1996, two years after former Etobicoke mayor and current Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday started the hall of fame. “My parents moved to Etobicoke in 1957. My mom still lives in the same house. My brothers and I went to St. Gregory, Michael Power and Richview (high schools). We’ve got Etobicoke tattooed on us. Etobicoke was a great place to grow up and it’s where I’ve raised my kids.” The 19th annual Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame gala induction dinner takes place on Thursday, Nov. 1 at the Old Mill Inn and Spa, 21 Old Mill Rd. Reception and cocktails start at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and ceremony at 6:30 p.m. The silent auction closes at 9 p.m. Generations of cyclists, skaters and hockey players growing up in Etobicoke will remember Bob Bendera, owner of Centennial Cycle and Sports, who will be inducted next

month as a builder. In 1966, Bendera opened his business at the Rathburn-Renforth plaza with a $5,000 loan from his mother. Nearly a half century later, Centennial Cycle and Sports remains successful under the stewardship of his son,
Darris, one of Bendera’s four children with wife, Rosemary. The business evolved from selling hockey, baseball and lacrosse equipment, bicycles, skis, fishing gear, curling rocks to providing promotional wear and team uniforms. Bendera is
known for never refusing a request for a prize donation, sponsorship contribution, raffle ticket sale or helping hand. Alex Hall nominated Bendera to be inducted into the same hall of fame for which Bendera had been
a founding member of the board of governors. “I didn’t know Bob very well when I went into his store with one-yearold skates I’d bought my son from a second-hand store,” Hall recalled. “Bob said, ‘There’s something wrong with these skates. He can’t be using these skates.’ I said, ‘Bob, I didn’t buy them here.’ Didn’t matter. Bob got equivalent brand-new skates for my son. He sent them home with me. He said, ‘I’ll deal with CCM.’ “I didn’t know the man well then. But that’s when I knew there was something special about him.” Bendera’s family said his motto was always: “The kids came first.” NHL players including Mike Pelyk, Doug Gilmour, Steve Ludzik and Wendel Clark would often drop by the store to catch up with Bendera, a clear nod to his generosity when they were kids. “Bob is not one of those guys who gets the accolades or is looking for notoriety for doing good for others,” Hall said. “I want to make sure he has a place in the community, that he gets some recognition and the ‘thank you’ he deserves.” Tickets for next month’s gala are $175 per person. Five new inductees all have Etobicoke connection Bob Bendera Fr i e n d s o f Bob Bendera describe him as a generous man who quietly helped many young athletes through his community and charitable involvement. He had an obvious passion for local sports and took a personal interest in the youngsters who frequented his store. Relationships mattered to him, and the young players who wore his uniforms or laced up his skates didn’t forget him either. Bob’s involvement in sports didn’t stop with his store. He is known as the creator of Monday Night Hockey, a weekly, no-contact game among friends that included NHL greats Ken Dryden, Mark Napier and Billy White. Bob also coached hockey for many years and helped organize an annual golf tournament called “Man of the Year” to raise funds for The Hospital for Sick Children.

Lisa Bentley is an 11-time Ironman champion, achievements made all the more impressive given that she has a mild strain of cystic fibrosis, a disorder that can make breathing difficult and can cause lung infections. Growing up, Bentley ran track and field at St. Ambrose Catholic Elementary School, swam at Alderwood Pool, ran along Lake Shore and Brown’s Line and biked around a deserted Sherway Gardens’ parking lot. Bentley took 11 Ironman championships in eight years, three Canadian titles and five straight Ironman Australia wins. She regularly gives motivational speeches to school groups and running clubs. Bentley also promotes the need for research into cystic fibrosis as part of the Cure4CF campaign.
Tom Anselmi is being recognized for his role at Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment (MLSE), as well as earlier experiences working on Toronto’s SkyDome and Air Canada Centre. As senior vice-president and chief marketing officer of MLSE, he gained experience with broadcast media, ticket sales, branding and communications before becoming MLSE VP and chief operating officer in 2004. Anselmi grew up playing minor hockey in Toronto’s west end in the rinks of Humber Valley and Queensway Faustina hockey league. As an elementary student, he was chosen to present a class project to Harold Ballard and King Clancy about how to remodel Maple Leaf Gardens, the closing ceremonies for which he arranged during his career.
Claude Lemieux won four Stanley Cups, a Canada Cup gold medal and a record of big game success during his 18-year NHL career. He is just one of five NHL players to win the Stanley Cup with three different teams, in back-to-back seasons. Off the ice, Lemieux became president of the now-defunct ECHL Phoenix Roadrunners in 2005. In 2009, he joined the cast of Battle of the Blades, donning figure skates and twirling partner ShaeLynn Bourne to a second-place finish. In 2011, he was named president of the North American chapter of 4Sports and Entertainment, headquartered in Etobicoke. This year, Lemieux joined other Canadiens’ alumni in a charity game to benefit pediatric services at Etobicoke General and Brampton Civic hospitals.
Craig Ramsay Craig Ramsay became part of the shutout line that helped the Buffalo Sabres reach the Stanley Cup finals in 1974-75. In 2004, he hoisted the Stanley Cup as assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He became head coach of the Atlanta Thrashers in 2010. In 2011, he joined the Florida Panthers as assistant coach. Born in Weston, Ramsay grew up in Thistletown. He learned to skate on a frozen Humber River, in backyard rinks and at age 10, started playing house league at Pine Point Arena, coached by his neighbour Bert Turney. His high school studies at North Albion and Thistletown collegiates was interrupted when Ramsay was offered a tryout with the Ontario Hockey League’s Peterborough Petes, eventually becoming the team captain.

Looking for more community space
T
oronto’s neighbourhoods must be places where residents have opportunities to come together to learn, volunteer and play. This month’s Guardian’s “Special Report” feature delves into the issues of affordable community space in the city and the challenges community groups have in gaining access. We looked at both a city-wide experience and assessed the situation in our own Etobicoke community, looking at the issue from the standpoint of not only specific user groups, but also those who rent out their facilities for community use. At the root of this challenge is money – or lack our view of it. Earlier this year, the City must support cash-strapped City of Toronto, facing an outcry affordable options from local sports organizations, ultimately waived a for local groups permit fee hike for the use of city fields that would have added $1.5 million to the city’s coffers, but also would have threatened those organizations’ survival. According to a report from the Wellesley Institute, titled ‘Exercising Good Policy: Increasing Access to Recreation in Toronto’s 2013 Budget’ increasing access to recreational facilities is a smart investment, one that pays off with improved health of the populace. We agree the City of Toronto has a role to play in ensuring affordable access to community space for artistic and recreation groups. But perhaps there’s more to achieving this than by waiving fees. There are facilities in the city (places of worship come to mind) whose operators are looking for user groups as well. As a representative from a church in Weston noted, about the only challenge with being a landlord is getting the word out that space in the facility is available for rent. Would it make sense, then, for the city to have a centralized area online where not-for-profit facilities and potential user groups can be matched up? There is also reason for optimism. One of the recommendations in the Wellesley report calls for stable funding for youth outreach workers programs in order to enable positive health outcomes for our young people. Earlier this month, the province announced funding for 35 new youth outreach workers, with 20 of those spots earmarked for Toronto. While a provincial funding announcement from a minority government is not quite the definition of ‘stable’, that announcement, which took place at the Jane Street Hub in York, is a start and is recognition of the need for those kinds of investments in our communities. Smoking battle brewing at city hall

hose who think Toronto City Council’s tug-of-war flip-flopping under Mayor Rob Ford is a new development in Toronto politics either have short memories or are new in town. Municipal councils have flipped and flopped frequently and sometimes with great gusto. There were transit flipflops — remember when Metro Council, hamstrung on whether to build a Sheppard subway, voted to dig the tunnel but lay no tracks? No? Well let’s try an easier one. Remember smoking in bars and restaurants? Back in the day, it used to be commonplace to have your calamari dusted with nicotine. And your nonsmoking housemates could tell you’d been out on the town because of the way your coat stank. Second-hand smoke was a health issue, but for many, commerce and culture trumped science and medicine, and any attempts to protect diners and tipplers from cancer and asthma attacks met with concerted opposition. smoking bans, in the mid1990s, happened in two former municipalities: North York, and Toronto. In both cases, councillors bowed to pressure from restaurant owners and the tobacco industry, and reversed the bans within months of them being put in place. It was only after amalgamation and with the urging of the city’s persuasive medical officer of health Dr. Sheela Basrur that council pushed ahead with a city-wide ban. And that was a terrible fight in itself, as restauranteurs and barowners lined up to predict a veritable hospitality apocalypse if smokers were asked to take it outside. But the bylaw passed, its opponents placated with a soothing phase-in, and as it turned out Toronto’s restaurants and bars boomed, or at least flourished.
Eventually the provincial government decided to mirror Toronto’s ban and for a time, it seemed as though all was settled. This week, the Toronto Board of Health decided to ramp it up a notch. Having sent smokers outside, the board recommended starting consultation on a bylaw that would finish the job, to the extent that any bylaw can. If council approves it, smoking on outdoor patios, at sports fields, outside buildings and on hospital grounds would be illegal. So we’ll see how this goes. Now that provincial law has enshrined the city’s existing smoking bylaw, there’s no risk of that reversing. The question of what happens outside, however, is very much in play. And given everything else on our plate, the last thing Toronto needs is a bare-knuckled rematch of the smoking war. To the editor: I was caught off guard and shocked to hear the abrupt departure of Dalton McGuinty from Ontario’s political arena. Irrespective of your views of the man and which side of the political fence you stand on, the dedication, commitment and sincerity of the man cannot be disputed or denied. Whatever the hot issues facing his government might be, it is nevertheless a courageous move to see a politician stepping down willingly and honourably. I come from areas of the world where this is unheard of. A leader becomes so obsessed with power and would do anything in the process to stay on even if the entire country goes up in flames. He was not a leader who was overtaken by arrogance. He always had a genuine and non-partisan smile on his face and down-to-earth attitude. Mr. McGuinty had instilled hope in people like myself who look different and speak with an accent and sometimes feel the heat of hate-mongers who tell me to go back to where I come from. They tend to forget the fact that everyone, except First Nations people, was an immigrant to this great nation of ours. A true leader is the one who knows when the time is up and when to vacate the scene and give the chance to someone else. Mr. McGuinty – with his genuine smile – will certainly be missed dearly. I wish him all the best in his future endeavors and life ambitions. No matter what might have taken place in the alleged mishaps by members of his party including the alleged misconducts, he will still be remembered as one of the noblest politicians whom we have ever been blessed to have. SHUT OUT: Community groups struggle to find affordable space with permit fee increase CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com When the Etobicoke Basketball Association (EBA) got hit with news of a more than 333 per cent fee increase at half its gyms last month, the impact was forecasted as potentially catastrophic – especially to the 1,200-kid strong league’s lower income players. That’s because, like many volunteer-driven, not-for-profit sports organizations across Toronto, the bulk of EBA’s player fees go directly towards facilities permits. For such groups already operating on shoe-string budgets, any increase in permit fees – like EBA’s recent threefold bump-up at Toronto District School Board (TDSB) gyms – must be passed along to its participants, explained Joe DaSilva, an EBA board member and volunteer coach. “If we ran a middle class league, we would have no problem because we’d just increase our fees and people would say that was fine, but we’re working very hard to make (EBA) very inclusive of everybody,” he said, noting that many of the league’s players come from single-parent homes, making fees a barrier. “This (TDSB increase) really affects how many kids we can afford to subsidize. We gather funds during the year to subsidize around 200 kids, because how do you turn away a kid who shows up with $50 and says, ‘This is all I have. I want to play basketball’?” EBA is far from Toronto’s only not-for-profit struggling with the search for affordable space – just as the TDSB isn’t the only provider struggling to accommodate them. The changes to the permitting fee schedule at the TDSB, explained board spokesperson Ryan Bird, came about because of a shortfall between the cost of supporting the community use of school space and the revenue collected. “Before these measures were voted on, we were subsidizing our permit holders to the tune of $11 mil-

At a time when sports groups are getting hit hardest, a report emerged this month from the Wellesley Institute, urging the City of Toronto to improve the health of its residents by increasing access to recreational outlets. “City councillors have opportunities, right now, to improve the health of Torontonians that don’t require massive investments or complicated agreements with other levels of government,” reads the report, entitled ‘Exercising Good Policy: Increasing Access to Recreation in Toronto’s 2013 Budget.’ “One of these opportunities is
quite simple: increase access to recreational services for Torontonians.” Coming as it does in the wake of yet another violence plagued summer in Toronto, the report and its recommendations are reminiscent of reaction to Toronto’s Summer of the Gun in 2005, when funding for community programming rolled in as a means to stop youth violence. One of the results of that influx was the Community Hub initiative in some of Toronto’s most underserved suburban neighbourhoods, where a lack of community space was compounding the challenges of social isolation and poverty faced by many residents. As part of their ongoing Building Strong Neighbourhoods Strategy – and in partnership with the province, key agency partners, and private funders – United Way Toronto has developed eight community hubs in priority neighbourhoods across the city, funding $1 million towards the capital costs of each hub, as well as contributing $150,000 annually toward each’s operating costs. “In looking at developing the Building Strong Neighbourhoods Strategy and hubs in particular, was the fact that, yes, space is a big challenge all over the city, particularly in suburbs,” said Lorraine Duff, United Way Toronto’s director of programming. “So we decided to ensure that some of this space was available for community agencies to use.” Duff said so far the community spaces within those hubs – including community kitchens, meeting rooms, and in the case of the Rexdale Community Hub, a gym – are always well used and in demand, especially by the kids. “We think it’s so essential to have opportunities for people to come together to meet their neighbours and to work together on issues that are important to their community, and that’s why we’re really excited to work with the community to have the space available,” Duff said. “One of the things we find is that space gets used up really quickly.”

say will nearly quadruple their permit fees. Whereas now, as a Level 1 recipient, a single TDSB gym costs the EBA $3.51 an hour on a school night, come Jan. 1 the same gym in the same time slot will cost them $17.10 an hour once they’re shuffled down to Level 2 status – nearly five times
as much. And that’s on top of the additional 43.7 per cent hike in fees the board also plans to implement on Jan. 1. While the TDSB has granted the EBA and other groups impacted by a the board’s subsidy re-categorization a much-appreciated deferral on the fee hike from its original September
implementation date until Jan. 1, EBA board member and volunteer coach Joe DaSilva said the league is left with no choice except to raise registration fees in order to recover the “unplanned for and exorbitant” fee hikes come January. “This, quite simply, will put the price out of reach for a lot of our
families. All house and rep team players...this season will now collectively need to find an additional $63,000,” he said of the league’s 1,200 players. “Without a doubt there will be a lot of kids sitting on couches instead of playing hoops as a direct result of this decision.”

Consultations to be held on expanding smoking bans DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto could be banning smoking on restaurant patios, at the entrances to public buildings, outside hospitals and on sports fields. Toronto’s Board of Health
voted unanimously Monday to hold public consultations on the widespread bans of smoking outdoors, after hearing from anti-smoking advocates that they could go even farther, and from members of the restaurant industry that they should go slower in
banning tobacco use in their establishments. “Now we’ll go out and hear from folks,” said Board of Health Chair John Filion. “Regular folks and industry folks and see what we hear and bring it back. It will happen as soon as possible, I hope.”
The move comes 13 years after Toronto Council last dealt with the issue of second-hand smoke in public places, banning smoking in bars, restaurants and bingo parlours. At that time the proposed ban was controversial – so controversial that early attempts

But in 1999, Toronto Council voted to ban smoking in bars and restaurants across the city, relegating smokers to outdoor patios in the summer and the sidewalk other times. The new rules would extend the smoking ban outside restaurants. And restaurateurs suggested the city shouldn’t be hasty in extending the smoking ban. Marco Morano from the Ontario Restaurant Hotel and Motel Association said an outdoor smoking ban could harm businesses in the current economic climate. “The industry landscape is certainly uncertain,” he said. � Amelia (Millie) Hillier (nee Vardy) 85, at Brampton Civic Hospital Wednesday, October 17th, after years of valiantly battling several serious health issues. Amelia was the epitome of resilience. Orphaned by age ten and living in very difficult circumstances, she nevertheless managed to improve her life and all those around her through her indomitable spirit. She married, moved to Toronto and raised three devoted daughters. Despite physical ailments that could fill a textbook, she never gave up her quest for better health nor her hope that she’d finally win a lottery. Generous to a fault, she always put others before herself. Born December 15th, 1926 in Portaux-Basques, Newfoundland to John and Mary (nee Keeping) Vardy. Predeceased by loving husband Gerald Stanley, and devoted and adored daughter Pat Guy. An unfathomable loss for her daughters Lorraine (husband Duncan) Green and Heather (husband Wayne) Green, son-inlaw Martin Guy, grandchildren Michelle (husband Brian) Postill, Jennifer Wallace, Alexander, Brittany, Joshua, Davis and Samantha Green, and greatgrandchildren Christopher, Jacob and Shelby Postill and Katie and Gavin Wallace. Sadly missed by sister Ruth Lafleche and sisters- and brothers-in-law Rosalie Hillier, Doris and Fred Pittman and Sheila and Dave Crocker, Norman and Ruby Hillier and Effie Hillier, plus nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brother Russell and sisters Jane, Evelyn, Blanche and Irene, sistersin-law Evelyn Hillier and Vida Hatcher, and brothers-in-law Raymond Hillier, William Hillier and George Lafleche. Proudly employed at the Dominion Store on The Westway in Etobicoke for many years, volunteer at Kipling Acres Home for the Aged and a long-standing member of St. Paul the Apostle Anglican Church in Rexdale. Funeral services have taken place with interment at Meadowvale Cemetery, Brampton. Donations to Canadian Blood Services (www.blood.ca) in recognition of the hundreds of donors whose blood donations allowed Amelia to live her long life. Thanks to Reverend Paul Ivany, the staff of Southbrook Retirement Community, her dear friend Eileen Edwards, caregiver Sharon Teixeira, her many friends at Coscare Health Services and the gentle and loving nurses of the Respiratory unit at Brampton Civic Hospital.
