A school is what you make of it. That’s the gist of one of many inspirational messages scrawled in mural form on the walls of Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School - an Etobicoke high school slated to close its doors come June, much to the distress of its small but impassioned student body. “Obviously you guys aren’t making very much of Bosco,” a tearful Callie Conforti, 17, told Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) officials Tuesday, Oct. 25 at a meeting to discuss plans for the school’s closure. “You guys probably don’t understand what this school means to everybody; what this school actually means to us. We are a family and you guys are tearing us apart.” Conforti, a Grade 12 student on Bosco’s leadership team, is just one of the under-subscribed school’s remaining 90 or so Grade 11 and 12 students upset by the TCDSB’s decision >>>remaining, page 28

Etobicoke Lakeshore residents are invited to light up the waterfront on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at the 5th Annual Mimico Pumpkin Parade.

Sponsored by the Mimico-bythe-Lake BIA, the family-friendly event will take place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in Mimico Square (at Lake Shore Boulevard West and Mimico Avenue). “The Pumpkin Parade not only gives jack-o’-lanterns one last hurrah, but it also gives residents an opportunity to showcase their talents in pumpkin carving and decorating,” event organizers said in a statement, noting that they hope this year’s event will bring in up to 900 carved pumpkins. Residents interested in participating in the Mimico Pumpkin Parade are asked to bring their own candles and lighters, along with their Halloween jack-o’-lanterns, to the event. All pumpkins will then be collected by the City of Toronto the following morning. For info, go to www.facebook. com/MimicoPumpkinParade

Stonegate Community Health Centre (CHC), located in southeast Etobicoke, is looking for local businesses, community services and residents to support its 7th annual Good Food Box Holiday Drive. The aim of the drive is to help put healthy, nutritious food on the tables of the many residents in need in the Stonegate community - where, according to Stonegate CHC, 28 per cent of families and 38 per cent of children are living in poverty. The health centre’s 2016 goal is to raise enough money to provide 300 Good Food Boxes to feed families and individuals dealing with hunger and food insecurity issues in the area. For just $18 in donations, the Good Food Box Holiday Drive will buy a family in need a large-sized Good Food Box brimming with fresh fruits and vegetables. Operated by FoodShare, the Good Food Box program is a non-profit fresh fruit and vegetable distribution system for which Stonegate CHC acts as a drop-off location. To donate to Stonegate CHC’s Good Food Box Holiday Drive, contact the health centre at 416-2317070 or go to www.stonegatechc. org to give online.

n a few days our streets will be full of miniature ghouls, princesses and witches, excitedly going door-to-door to fill up their treat bags. At this time of year, however, it’s not just on Halloween that drivers and pedestrians need to be cautious of each other. The days are shorter and it’s usually under the cover of darkness that people busy themselves getting to and from work, or kids make their way to school. Last week Toronto police reported 18 pedestrians were hit on the road in one day – with one of those incidents resulting in a fatality. We’ve all seen that video from Pickering where the girl getting off a bus is nearly OuR ViEW little hit by a careless driver zooming past. Distracted The close call was enough to walking can make staff gasp in the newsroom. The reality is, for our streets to cause injuries be safer, both drivers and pedestrians need to change their ways. Drivers cannot be distracted. Put your cellphones away, don’t drive while juggling a burger, pay attention to what’s happening in front of and around your car. Watch crosswalks and check blind spots – particularly curbside – for approaching pedestrians or cyclists. For those on the sidewalks, attention needs to be on your surroundings too. As Peel Regional Police Const. Mark Fischer told us this week, “Just like distracted driving, there’s distracted walking that can cause injuries.” Make eye contact with drivers as you approach crosswalks. If it’s raining, use an umbrella so you can monitor the traffic around you. Adult and children pedestrians also need to be mindful of their appearance. Dark clothing limits visibility; choose reflective gear instead. Parents should talk with their kids about street safety and wearing the right clothing in darker hours. If children can walk with a parent, a friend, or in a group – all the better. Some neighbourhoods organize ‘walking school buses’ that pick children up at their front doors. It’s on all of us to change our behaviours and make the effort to keep pedestrians safe.

column

Do voters need a rest from byelections? What with the tenor of the presidential election nearing its close south of the border, maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that the good voters of northeast Scarborough are tired of being voters and would like a rest. Still, it was hard not to be a bit surprised when at the last council meeting Councillor Chin Lee suggested that some 900 residents of Ward 42 (Scarborough-Rouge River) were interested in abandoning their franchise until the next municipal election and seeing the seat vacated by longtime councillor Raymond Cho filled by council appointment. Lee said he had a petition of that size, asking for an end to what they called “musical chairs” between the various elected offices in Ward 42. There have been a lot of byelections there. Cho departed for Queen’s Park in the last one, this past summer. School trustee Neethan

david nickle the city Shan, a New Democrat, was recently elected to the Toronto District School Board in a January byelection, and ran against Cho in the summer. Perhaps, the petitioners worried, the enthusiastic legislator Shan (identified in everything but name in the petition) would do so again. And so with the support of Mayor John Tory, his executive committee members and really everyone else but the left-wing minority, council is waiting a month so that Lee (whose ward borders Ward 42) might consult further with the community. Sympathy for weary Scarborough electors aside, one can’t ignore the possibility that the majority wing of city council wants more of a say in the representation of Ward 42 (and one vote in 45) than a quick byelection – you know, the sort of

thing that people expect in a democracy, two years out from a general election – might otherwise allow. There’s going to be more of this as time goes on. On Wednesday, Mayor Tory’s executive committee had a look at the final report from consultants charged with recommending changes to Toronto’s ward boundaries for the next election. The meeting occurred after the deadline for this column, but the matter must still move to council next month and when it does, I predict a vigorous if occasionally arcane fight over the recommendation to add three new wards bringing the total to 47. Now, the discussion as to whether the number of politicians should be increased is a bit more nuanced: democratic representation can be balanced with 47 councillors, the current 44 or even the 22-member council that the late Rob Ford advocated. And council-

lors do cost money. These ones would cost a total of $870,000 a year, with another $210,000 to set up the three city hall and constituency offices in the first year. Aside from the money, there is also the matter of all that debate. Those old enough to get tired of voting are also old enough to remember when Toronto Council had 57 members, just after amalgamation, and how exhausting that bunch was. Of course, the real answer is that whether we want to or not, the right to vote in an election and have one’s views and interests represented in government is important in itself – and as well as being a right, a responsibility. One might think that everyone should understand that.

Shoppes at Stonegate breaks ground in ‘food desert’ Long-awaited grocery outlet to be built Cynthia Reason creason@insidetoronto.com The soil was officially turned last week on a development that will bring a long-awaited grocery outlet back to a Stonegate community described by many as a ‘food desert.’ Vandyk Group held a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 20 for The Shoppes at Stonegate - the first phase of its Backyard Condos development at 150 Berry Rd. in south Etobicoke. The retail phase of the development will consist of a 32,000-sq-ft, two-storey building with several notable anchor tenants - chief among them, the new Berry Road Food Co-op, which will take over an 8,000-sq-ft unit on the development’s ground floor, and a relocated Stonegate Community Health Centre, taking over the 15,000-sq-ft second storey of the new build. “If I could pick one word to describe both this community

redevelopment and our organization, I think it’s transformation,” said Sherman Chan, Vandyk’s VP of Acquisitions and Development, noting that Vandyk’s vision for the development is one that takes

into account local shopping, food security, proximity to schools and daycares, medical services, and playgrounds. “All of those things that make for a real community.” Perhaps one of the most highly

anticipated additions to The Shoppes at Stonegate development is the Berry Road Food Co-op, a newly formed multi-stakeholder co-op that stepped in to fill the food gap after several large grocery chains - including Loblaws and Sobeys - declined to take up tenancy at the site. James Partanen, executive director of Berry Road Food Co-op, said the new co-op will be the largest of its kind in the GTA once its doors open in early 2018. “It’s going to be a one-stop grocery experience - anything you could buy at a medium-sized grocery store, you’ll be able to buy here,” he said. “We’ll emphasize local, organic produce, as well as locally, organically, and co-operatively produced soft goods.” The Berry Road Food Co-op will also offer a “rich” bulk food section, and a community kitchen where local residents will be able to learn how to can and preserve their own food, take cooking classes, and participate in community programming, Partanen added. Bev Leaver, executive director of Stonegate Community Health Centre, said her organization is “excited” about possible partner-

ship opportunities with the new food co-op. “Putting our farmers’ market, our community garden and all of our food programs together with them - the possibilities are endless,” she said, noting that Stonegate CHC, too, hopes to open the doors to its new and improved space on the second storey of the Shoppes at Stonegate development in early 2018. “Today is a very exciting day to celebrate. After years of coping with the demolition, years on a construction site, we can really see things happening now and it’s very, very exciting.” That sentiment was echoed by Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Justin Di Ciano and MPP Peter Milczyn, who were both on hand at last week’s groundbreaking. Di Ciano called Vandyk’s redevelopment “by far the most exciting” in Ward 5: “Typically, as development comes into neighbourhoods through gentrification, it threatens what was there before. But this is one that is actually taking the bull by the horns and lifting the community up.” For more information about the Berry Road Food Co-op, go to www. berryroadfood.coop

special report

Residents worry about congestion spill-over >>>from page 1 decision issued Aug. 30. For years, meeting cohosts MLCN and Mimico Residents’ Association, and other community groups, have publicly voiced concerns that Mimico-by-theLake not become Humber Bay Shores to its immediate east: a neighbourhood of high-rise condominiums, some now scaling 60 storeys. “So m e o f u s l o o k a t Humber Bay Shores like the Wild West,” said Judith Rutledge, MLCN steering committee co-chair. “It’s like the Wild West with developers swooping in and having their way, not just with us, but with the city.” Martin Gerwin, Rutledge’s husband and MLCN steering committee co-chair, explained Denhez’s OMB decision to residents. Gerwin, who is retired, attended every day of Shoreline Towers’ OMB appeal pre-hearings, mediation and 22-day hearing. “It’s a rather indecisive decision. The adjudicator was trying to get all sides to make a deal, split the difference and to compromise. “We think the community has compromised already by accepting the secondary plan. For some property owners, the secondary plan is just the start of more negotiating and more compromise. It was the determination of the adjudicator to get some kind of deal to get something built.” Shoreline Towers Inc. had initially proposed to build a 25-storey tower on its lakefront parking lot behind its existing twin 10-storey apartments on Lake Shore Boulevard West, in part, on land the city had envisioned for a waterfront road. “A more appropriate building envelope can be defined,” Denhez said, which would reduce Shoreline Towers’ proposed new building height to 15 storeys, and push its future building farther from the lakefront. Impor tantly, Denhez ruled accommodations for Shoreline Towers’ future development would not apply to other apartment owners’ redevelopment proposals.

Growth and development is big on the agenda in the community… We want it to be planned development and community-building development.

– Harry Oussoren, MLCN’s board secretary and steering committee member

Staff/METROLAND

Above, Mimico Lakeshore Community Network members including Harry Oussoren (left), Mimico Residents’ Association president Chris Moore, John Cary, Edith Rutledge and Martin Gerwin are fighting against proposed increased development adjacent to the lakefront trail in Mimico Waterfront Park. S h o r e l i n e To w e r s I n c . appealed the Mimico-by-theLake Secondary Plan to the Ontario Municipal Board. Shoreline Towers has proposed to build a 25-storey residential building, but would consider 15 storeys, on its back parking lot that fronts the lake - seen at left.

“(Denhez) worded exceptions so they can’t apply to other properties,” Gerwin said. “We regard that as a good outcome for the community, although the ugly idea to allow site-specific exemptions (to the secondary plan) remains.” Since, the OMB has confirmed that Shoreline Towers

Inc. has requested a review of Denhez’s decision. That review is pending. Shoreline Towers’ lawyers did not respond to The Guardian’s requests for comment prior to deadline. In his OMB decision, Denhez instructed city planners to produce a modified secondary plan in accordance with certain direc-

tions, and to circulate it to the board, and to parties of the OMB hearing. Denhez’s instructions include: Shoreline Towers propose a new building of up to 15 storeys; the plan must include a waterfront road, which Shoreline Towers must set aside land to build. He d i d n o t s u p p o r t Shoreline Towers’ “tempo-

rary” east-west street, but said it may provide temporary site access until the waterfront street is built. Residents asked questions of Gerwin, Rutledge and MRA president Chris Moore on topics ranging from OMB reform to whether Humber Bay Shores’ well-known traffic-snarling morning and evening rush-hour con-

gestion, as condo residents head to work downtown and return home, could eventually spill east as a result of future redevelopment in Mimico-by-the-Lake. “I used to look out and see the twin towers of Palace Pier and Palace Place (condominiums),” said a man who has lived at Marina Del Rey condo since 2005. “Thank God I do a lot of work at home. I don’t have to drive between 7:30 and 9:30 in the morning. The place is a mess (with traffic congestion). “We should give a message to (MPP Peter) Milczyn and (Councillor Mark) Grimes: we have a secondary plan. Support the plan. If you don’t.... We won’t vote for you.” Staff from Milczyn’s and Grimes’ offices were in attendance, and pledged to give the MPP and councillor feedback from the meeting. That community feedback will also be given to city planners in preparation for the next stage in the OMB hearing, Moore said. Gerwin said MLCN principals plan to speak with city planners this week. “Growth and development is big on the agenda in the community,” said Harry Oussoren, MLCN’s board secretary and steering committee member. “We want it to be planned development and community-building development.”

Members of the congregation and the community line up to greet Bishop S. A. Morrison after an appreciation service and celebration at Westend Worship Centre Sunday.

Etobicoke congregation celebrates pastor – and giving to the community The West-End Church of God of Prophecy Worship Centre’s 450-strong congregation celebrated its pastor for the past quarter-century, Bishop S.A. Morrison, during its Sunday, Oct. 23 service. “I have a heart for people, reaching out to and caring for

families, reaching out to and helping in the community,” Morrison said. “That’s my heartbeat.” This summer, the church partnered with Urban Promise to offer a soccer camp in north Etobicoke. Recently, the church hosted a community barbecue

at which it offered free back-toschool haircuts. The congregation donated more than 100 backpacks filled with school supplies to support Youth Without Shelter and Horizons for Youth, which also received a $500 donation - the proceeds of a church garage sale.

CONSUMER FEATURE

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

Transit Project Assessment Process - Public Meetings

newsroom@insidetoronto.com Our Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is now home to nearly 7 million people – heading towards 10 million by 2041. This growth is a sign of success and opportunity. But as we grow, so too must our transportation network – the lifeblood that connects this great region and each of our communities.

www.facebook/InsideToronto

Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario, is bringing more transit and more connections to more places within the GTHA. Every community transit project, big or small, plays a vital role in the regional transportation system. We want to share our plans and get your feedback.

@InsideTOnews

Starting in November we will be hosting community open houses to share information and updates on three of Metrolinx’s projects to build new track and electrification infrastructure. We will be seeking your input on these specific plans and feedback on proposed mitigation strategies:

insidetoronto.com

GO Rail Network Electrification Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) (Hydro One as co-proponents): gotransit.com/electrification • Environmental Baseline Condition Reports have been prepared, Impact Assessment Reports to evaluate potential environmental effects of the project are underway, and stakeholder consultation is in progress. The project is currently in the Pre-Planning Phase of the TPAP. • The focus of this round of public meetings will be to provide an update on the project and conceptual design of the Traction Power Supply and Distribution components. Barrie Rail Corridor Expansion TPAP: metrolinx.com/RERBarrie • The environmental assessment studies are prepared, which include a detailed overview of impacts to evaluate the environmental effects of the preliminary design. The project is currently in the Pre-Planning Phase. • The focus of this round of public meetings will be to provide an update on the project and seek feedback on the environmental impacts. Lakeshore East-Don River to Scarborough Expansion TPAP: metrolinx.com/DonRiverScarborough

French Programs at the TDSB Applications for Early French Immersion are open from November 1 to December 1, 2016.

• The project is currently in the Pre-Planning Phase with existing conditions studies completed. • The focus of this round of public meetings will be on existing conditions. These meetings will also include information on the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) which guides the work being done to transform the transportation network in the GTHA. A review of the RTP is underway, providing the opportunity to formally incorporate new insights into the plan, while ensuring we maintain momentum on the projects underway. Information updates on other key studies and projects in your neighbourhood will also be provided.

Information evenings run throughout November.

We invite you to join us in person at the public meeting nearest you to find out more. (Or, participate online at metrolinxengage.com) Meeting time: 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. / Presentation: 7:00 p.m. Monday, November 7, 2016 Hope United Church 2550 Danforth Ave. Toronto, ON M4C 1L2

Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the

The Kip DisTricT

Now under construction in emerging central Etobicoke

C

oncert Properties is proud to be leading the way in the evolving Central Etobicoke neighbourhood with their master-planned community, The Kip District. This development, now under construction, is located at the intersection of Kipling and Dundas, adjacent to Kipling Station. The Kip Tower One represents an opportunity to get in early within a neighbourhood poised for growth – after all, savvy investing is all about timing. And with limited time pricing starting from the mid-$200’s, as well as a credit on closing incentive program, there has never been a better time to get in. This is among Central Etobicoke’s best condominium values, and it won’t last long. The Kip District is a thoughtfully designed community that will feature five architecturally distinctive towers. They will stand proud in Etobicoke’s skyline and will be complemented by a central square and park. Designed by U31, homes at The Kip District Tower One feature distinctly modern design. Bright, open spaces benefit from over-height eight-ft.-six in. ceilings and flexible, well-designed floorplans. Balconies and terraces extend living spaces and provide the opportunity to enjoy warmer weather. Contemporary linear kitchens with exceptional layouts have two-toned laminate cabinetry combined with quartz countertops, integrated dishwasher and built-in oven, stove and microwave to create a streamlined, built-in aesthetic. Timeless bathrooms feature clean lines and a warm colour palette. The Kip One also features well-designed common spaces such as the sophisticated double-height lobby as well as thoughtful amenities for your entertainment, fitness and convenience. Spend time with friends

and loved ones on the outdoor barbecue terrace; rooftop party room with catering kitchen, fireside lounge and wet bar; theatre or billiards room. For cyclists, there’s bicycle storage. For those who would rather hit the gym, The Kip District Tower One has that too. Pet owners will appreciate the park, central square and pet wash station. Homeowners within The Kip District will also benefit from many infrastructure and public realm improvements that are coming to the area. After all, Central Etobicoke has been identified by the City of Toronto as an urban growth centre that will develop to be the focal point for the western part of the City. The area is expected to help accommodate the expected 40 percent population growth the GTA will see by 2041. The Kipling Station Anchor Mobility Hub expansion will result in better connections between TTC, MiWay and GO Transit. The Six Points Interchange Reconfiguration will enhance vehicle traffic flow and accommodate future growth while at the same time make the area welcoming for pedestrians and bikes. The City’s Etobicoke Centre Public Space and Streetscape Improvements Plan seeks to transform Dundas into an active, lively and people-oriented space. It isn’t often that an opportunity arises to be among the first to buy in an emerging new, transit-oriented master-planned community in a rapidly-developing area. Take the next steps towards securing a quality home that could also prove to be a great investment by visiting TheKipDistrict.com.

Vindication for the Scarborough LRT Scarborough light rail advocates are vindicated by a newspaper report stating misleading information was passed on to Toronto Council ahead of a crucial subway vote. The Toronto Star story states city and TTC staff presented misleading data for the seven-stop Scarborough LRT project, leading undecided councillors to support the onestop subway extension instead championed by Mayor John Tory and chief city planner Jennifer Keesmaat. In a statement to Metroland Media Toronto, Scarborough Transit Action says the story confirms “distorted facts and figures” were used to push through the $2.9 billion subway project. TRANSIT WANTS YOUR OPINION wGO

Got an opinion on GO Transit? The regional transit provider has launched an online survey to broach customer attitudes towards the service. GO wants feedback on its performance over the last six months and tips on to improve

Information sessions are also planned for November at the Fort York Visitor Centre. Visit www.thebentway.ca

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT for next year, from the service provided to the state of its bus terminals, along with customer service and safety. To sweeten the pot, GO is also giving away $50 fare vouchers to five survey respondents. The survey is open until Nov. 5. Email marketingresearch@ gotransit.com PITCH YOUR IDEAS ON BENTWAY’ w‘THE

The Bentway, the public space project planned for under the Gardiner Expressway, is looking for programming submissions. The 1.75-kilometre plan below the Gardiner between Strachan and Spadina avenues is promising to provide plenty of recreational options, including walking trails and cultural performances. From now until November 25, you can pitch your ideas for how to program the space.

FOR BLOOR VIADUCT wBOLLARDS

Bloor Viaduct cyclists finally have some separation from the rest of traffic with the installation of “bollards” along the roadway. The Viaduct has had a painted bike lane since 2010, but only just received the added separation, which the popular cycling blog Biking Toronto notes has increased at least the perception of safety. “Instead of having traffic whip by you with only painted lines between them and you on your bike, these new bollards are not only a physical ‘thing’ but also a constant visual reminder to cars that the bike lanes are for bikes,” reads a recent post related to the new infrastructure. We strengthened reliability to ensure that major blackouts and brownouts don’t put our economy at risk. Independent reports confirm Ontario at the middle of the pack among all Canadian provinces when it comes to electricity price increases over the last decade. BUT ONTARIO FAMILIES DESERVE A BREAK. Close to 200 people turned out to a Pupil Accommodation Review meeting at Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School this week to discuss the Toronto Catholic District School Board’s (TCDSB) proposed closure of the school come June. Here, TCDSB Associate Director Rory McGuckin explains the board’s plans to transfer Bosco’s Grade 11 students to neighbouring high schools in February.

Remaining Grade 11 Bosco students to be transferred to nearby schools in February >>>from page 1 to launch a Pupil Accommodation Review to consider shutting down programming at Bosco following the end of this school year. The accommodation review for Bosco was spurred by the school’s precipitous decline in enrolment over the last decade – from 113 per cent of the school’s capacity of 840 students in 2007 to just 11 per cent capacity this year. While Conforti and her Grade 12 classmates will be allowed to graduate at Bosco in June 2017, the school’s 30-odd remaining Grade 11 students will be transferred to neighbouring high schools – including Archbishop Romero, Chaminade, Michael Power/ St. Joseph, Father Henry Carr, Msgr. Percy Johnson, and St. Basil the Great – in February. Ro r y Mc G u c k i n , t h e TCDSB’s associate director of education, explained that moving the Grade 11 students out of Bosco for their second semester was an “agonizing” decision board officials made in the best

interests of those students – allowing them to participate fully in their new schools’ course selection process in February for the 2017-2018 school year. “I want you to know that we have spent countless hours trying to figure out and do what we believe is best for the situation going forward,” McGuckin, who served as principal at Bosco in the late 1990s/early 2000s, said. “My heart is with the students and what we’re proposing is something we are hoping you will see will really help meet the education needs of all students at Don Bosco.” Despite those assurances, the close to 200 students, staff and community members present at Tuesday’s meeting voiced numerous concerns with the closure, ranging from the cost of new uniforms for transferring Grade 11 students, to rumours that the TCDSB plans to sell the Bosco building off to the highest bidder once its doors are closed. In response to the latter, board officials assured meet-

ing attendees that the TCDSB has no plans as yet to sell the school to a developer, and that the building may very well lay empty for a time until a plan for its future is decided upon. Mario Silva, comptroller for the TCDSB’s Planning and Development Services, said the board plans to consider possible collaborations with the city and/or community colleges in its exploration of future alternative programming/building use options for Bosco. “That said, we’re a long way from a recommendation or any kind of scenario at this point,” he said. “But the long and the short of it is...this site is near the highway, it’s got great access, it’s on a major transit route. We’d be awfully foolish to do anything without the opportunity to explore some of these options.” The final report for Bosco’s Pu p i l Ac c o m m o d a t i o n Re v i e w, m e a n w h i l e, i s expected to be voted on by TCDSB trustees in January, at earliest, Silva said. Rio Olympic bronze medalist Brittany MacLean retires

Bad things happen when

food scraps

& recycling

get together.

When you throw food scraps in your Blue Bin, food residue and particles get soaked up by paper and can ruin large batches of otherwise good recyclables. In fact, last year an estimated 45,000 tonnes of organic waste and garbage was mistakenly put into recycling. Meaning a lot of ruined recyclables ended up in the City’s landfill. And that is a very bad thing indeed. Learn what goes in your Blue Bin and what doesn’t at toronto.ca/recycleright

Space provided through a partnership between industry and Ontario municipalities to support waste diversion programs.

Two and a half months after winning her first Olympic medal in Rio, Etobicoke’s Brittany MacLean is retiring from the pool. Lauded as Canada’s top female distance swimmer, the 22-year-old University of Georgia student is the Canadian record holder in the 200-, 400-, 800-, and 1,500-metre women’s freestyle events. “Getting all four of those is something that’s a really big honour for me,” MacLean said in a statement, when asked about the proudest moments of her six-year career on Canada’s national swim team. Other highlights, she added, included winning the Olympic bronze medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay alongside teammates Katherine Savard, Taylor Ruck, and Penny Oleksiak this past August in Rio, making it to the London Olympic finals in the 400-metre freestyle, and medalling at both the Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. Her only regret, she said, is having fallen short of an Olympic podium finish in her individual events - a goal derailed by an untimely illness in Rio this summer. Although MacLean lowered her own record in the 400-metre freestyle during the Rio Olympic prelims, she said something “felt off in the final,” where she ended up finishing fifth. The next day, despite losing her voice and getting progressively sicker, MacLean managed a strong swim in the bronze medal-winning relay final - but her individual events suffered, with 10thplace finishes in both her 200- and 800-metre individual events. “It was incredible to be a member of that relay team and leave Rio as an Olympic medallist, but I was not satisfied with my (individual) performances,” she said in a statement. “I was in better shape than I ever thought I could be and was just super confident. It’s hard to accept that’s the way I was going to go out.” Although MacLean considered continuing her career

Etobicoke Olympian Brittany MacLean set the Canadian record in the 400-metre butterfly and earned a return trip to the Rio Olympics during the April 2016 Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre. Less than three months after the Rio Olympics, she has announced her retirement.

at least through December’s FINA World Swimming Championships or even the 2017 long-course worlds in Budapest, her illness continued to nag her for weeks after her return from Rio. Deciding that she was too sick to put in the work necessary to swim to her potential, MacLean has decided to instead retire and focus on finishing her degree in Sport Management at University of Georgia. Her legacy, however, carries on to a new generation of Canadian swimmers she helped lead by example. “It was cool to be a part of the Ryan Cochrane/Julia Wilkinson/Brent Hayden era, and now it’s the world of Penny (Oleksiak), Taylor (Ruck) and almost every single woman on the team was in finals,” MacLean said. “It was always an honour getting to race for Canada and I loved each opportunity to do so,” she added. “I am

so excited for the future of Canadian swimming.” John Atkinson, director of Swimming Canada’s High Performance program, called MacLean “one of the toughest swimmers I have had the pleasure to work with. “She has been a great competitor for Swimming Canada and to finish her career with an Olympic medal in Rio was a great achievement,” he said in a statement. McLean attended grades 11 and 12 at Silverthorn Collegiate after spending grades 9 and 10 at Martingrove Collegiate. Prior to that she attended three elementary schools in Etobicoke - Hollycrest Middle School (high performance program), John G. Althouse Middle School and Princess Margaret Jr. School. She joined Etobicoke Swimming when she was seven years old. Her older sister Heather MacLean is also a retired Olympian, having competed in the London Olympics.

James Kelly named athlete of the month Student is point guard for Etobicoke Thunder The Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame athlete of the month for October is James Kelly. James is a 10-year-old, Grade 5 student at John English public school in the French Immersion program. James is an avid skateboarder, snowboarder and point guard for Etobicoke Thunder major atom rep basketball team. The team which has been together for the past three years has gone from an inexperienced team to being a contender at the Ontar io Basketball Association year-end tournament (the Ontario Cup). The team plays a series of

games throughout the year, travelling to out-of-town tournaments and then are ranked according to their record. This year’s Ontario Cup is being held in Niagara in April. The team has become a cohesive unit under coach Evron Joseph who likes James’ work ethic. It is not uncommon for James to play a game and then go home and practice his shot on his own street hoop. This past September, James travelled to Uganda with his mother Jenn Kelly t o w o r k a t t h e Wa t o t o Orphanage. (Watoto means ‘child’ in Swahili.) While in

Uganda, the pair worked in one of the Watoto’s villages for babies who were abandoned as infants or toddlers due to poverty, lack of education, and the HIV/AIDS crisis. James helped pay for his airfare to Uganda by delivering The Etobicoke Guardian. He also had donated funds which he made from the annual Eastbourne street sale. “When James was presented with his award he was very surprised and honoured as to be recognized as this month’s Athlete of the Month. James, even at this young age, is very passionate about his sport and

Knee Brace, Back Support, Walker, Scooter, Electric Wheelchair, Bath Chair, Tub Safety Rail, Bed Safety Rail, Electric Bed, Orthotics, Pressure Socks For Swollen, Tired And Achy Legs

has a social conscience and wants to give back to people less fortunate than himself. It makes me very proud of our organization that we recognize younger athletes that are so deserving of this award,” said Joanne Noble, Chair of the Board of the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame. The Athlete of the Month is sponsored by The Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame, Humber College, Canadian Tire - The Queensway, Boston Pizza - The Queensway and The Etobicoke Guardian. Roberta Overholt (left) leads a line of children to school Tuesday morning in Brampton.

Children can be safe by being visible on Halloween Dominik kurek dkurek@thetopic.ca For Roberta Overholt, a mother of three who helps countless children get to school everyday, walking is just a normal occurrence. She helps run the Walking School Bus at Brampton’s Morton Way Public School, which sees more than 100 participants. “It’s a program to promote children actually walking to school instead of having their parents drive them,” she said. While this has physical and environmental benefits, it also helps keep the children safe. “They know that they have to watch their surroundings. They know who to look for when we’re out walking,” Overholt said. Plus, walking in a group is safer than walking alone. Keeping a child safe is on every parent’s mind, particularly after a near miss caught on video earlier this school year went viral. A 10-yearold girl in Pickering almost got hit crossing in front of a school bus when a car zoomed past. This was in broad daylight. With Halloween approaching and with shorter daylight hours, motorists need to watch for children who might be harder to spot in

darkness. While driving according to the weather and daylight conditions and following the rules of the road will help minimize the risk of collision, police are reminding pedestrians that they too must ensure their own safety. Be visible and pay attention, said Peel Regional Police Constable Mark Fischer. “Wear reflective clothing, reflective bands, footwear, jackets, anything is helpful,” he said. “Put your cell phone away. Just like distracted driving, there’s distracted walking that can cause injuries.” When it’s raining, use an umbrella. “Then you can keep your eyes up and you don’t need to be looking down,” Fischer said. Children should walk in groups. Walking in a group makes you more visible to drivers, but also makes you less likely to be approached by a dangerous stranger, Fischer said. Children should avoid crossing in between intersections, and should stick to crosswalks, or lighted intersections to cross the road. Toronto-based Parachute, a national charity dedicated to safety awareness and education, tells parents that educating children about road safety starts with them.

“Parents knowing the rules of the road and being a really good role model is important,” Parachute interim CEO Pam Fuselli said. “I think parents underestimate how much of an impact their own behaviours have on their own children. So make sure that you do cross the road at the stop sign or the crosswalk or on a green light, versus running across the road midblock.” Children should be taught the various rules of the road at the appropriate stages of their development. For example, a young child will need to hold hands to cross the road, and an older child will need to know which roads are safe and which are too busy to cross. “Doing that over time as they age, then they develop those habits as they grow. Unfortunately, it isn’t a onetime thing. It’s over time and repeatedly,” she said. Paisley Canada can help pedestrians become more visible in the dark. The company carries Albedo100, a spray that makes clothing reflective. “It increases your visibility,” said Toronto’s Bobbi Garrow, a territory manager for Paisley Canada and mom of three. “It will increase the opportunity for drivers to see you.” It’s available at major retailers.

Toronto’s western beaches were not under siege Saturday, even though it looked like it. Some 51 reservists with Canadian Forces’ 32 Combat Engineer Regiment, based out of Denison Armoury in North York (near Downsview Park), practised their assault boat landings on Toronto’s western beaches Oct. 22, armed with their C-7 rifles, and jumped off the inflatable crafts in pairs as if faced by an opposing force. The regiment’s photographs of the training exercise look hauntingly similar to the iconic photos of the D-Day landings. The soldiers, in full green CADMAT digital camouflage combat uniforms, landed from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Sunnyside Park, Sir Casimir Gzowski Park and Hanlan’s Point Beach on Toronto Island. Soldiers were practising their core skills and techniques used on operations overseas and in response

to domestic emergencies, Lieut.-Col. Steven Boychyn, the regiment’s commanding officer, said in an interview on Sunday. “We were practising our skills with the boats themselves and our waterman skills. We work with the infantry and other Canadian Forces to help transport them over rivers and lakes, Boychyn said. “It also helps us with one of our main tasks: building bridges. Many of the regiment’s soldiers have engaged in similar landings in combat in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Eritrea, Boychyn said. In fact, the regiment built a number of bridges in the aftermath of Hurricane Hazel, he added. Hurricane Hazel struck southern Ontario on Oct. 15, 1954, killed 81 people and pounded Toronto with 110 kilometres-per-hour winds and 285 millimetres of rain in 48 hours. In January 1999, the regiment’s soldiers, armed with large chainsaws, were pressed into service at home to help hydro companies during the winter storm in which thenmayor Mel Lastman called on the Canadian Army to help. The regiment also responded to the ice storms of 1998 and 2013. Boychyn said his reserv-

ists hail from myriad civilian careers, including plumbers and electricians, police officers, firefighters and teachers. On Saturday, the soldiers’ assault boat landings garnered much public attention, Boychyn said, some people snapping photographs or asking questions of him and Capt. Chris Wattie, the regiment’s public affairs officer. “By and large, people were saying, ‘Wow. That’s pretty cool,’â€? Boychyn said. “It’s good for us to reconnect with the community, especially as reservists. One of our primary functions is to have good, positive relations with civilians.â€? Toronto police humourously advised the public Saturday of the regiment’s training exercises on Twitter: "PUBLIC ADVISORY: Canadian forces conducting armed simulated training exercises in the Beaches area. We are not being invaded." The advisory was retweeted more than 700 times, and drew some humorous comments. @TPSOperations are you sure?
