‘Whole-site solution’ to Silver Creek School property nears: MPP Residents cautiously optimistic at news CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Yvan Baker is confident the province will soon have a “whole-site solution” to the question mark that has long plagued the future of the Silver Creek School property. The Etobicoke Centre MPP shared this news with close to 100 Richmond Gardens residents last Thursday at an open house/community meeting at the Hartsdale Road school, which the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) declared surplus to its needs in June. “I have news for you. It’s not an announcement, but I think

it’s good news. The province is actually exploring a whole-site solution – in fact, the province is only exploring whole-site solutions,” Baker told residents at the Friends of Silver Creek School-hosted meeting. “What that means is, the province is not looking at solutions that involve subdividing the property...we’re not considering options that involve subdividing the park.” That news served to quell some residents’ concerns that the school and its attached green space might be severed off and sold separately. Agnes Potts’ annual garage sale raises $6,000 for childhood cancer research Granddaughter diagnosed with leukemia A little rain wasn’t enough to dampen Agnes Potts’ annual garage sale Saturday that raised more than $6,000 for childhood cancer research, a cause near and dear to the famous Etobicoke fundraiser’s heart. “We had an amazing weekend, in spite of the Saturday downpour,” said Potts, who is well known for her 20-year history of hosting fundraising garage sales in support of Etobicoke’s Youth Without Shelter at her Wingrove Hill home. This year, however, in honour of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Potts chose a new benefactor for her famous sale – a cause that hits close to home for the Potts family. Two years ago, Potts’ grand-
daughter, Emily, now 4, was diagnosed with leukemia, and has since gone through “more than most will endure in a lifetime,” from chemotherapy, surgery and lumbar punctures, to leg casts, MRIs and hair loss. Emily and her two sisters were on hand during their grandmother’s weekend sale selling lemonade, Potts said, noting that the trio rarely had to make change for generous donors. “It was quite an amazing experience. I was touched by so many people who cared,” Potts said. “And there were lots of tears, but it was nice tears. It was so good to see people come out when there’s an issue and they obviously cared about what was happening.”

Lakeshore food-sharing ministry enters third decade of service Wesley Mimico congregation hosts Saturday lunch program Tamara Shephard tshephard@insidetoronto.com The congregation of Wesley Mimico United Church may no longer have a church, but it believes its commitment to service needs no walls. “We’ve been asking ourselves, ‘how can we be a small, but alive and well congregation that serves the community and brings value to people’s lives without a building’?’” said Harry Oussoren, the church’s former pastor and a volunteer host with the congregation’s weekly Saturday lunch program. On Saturday at noon, dozens of people of all ages, races and circumstances returned to break bread and to visit the food-sharing ministry’s food bank. Both are now held in the donated basement of Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Oussoren said the congregation’s food-sharing ministry contributes to “food justice” for many residents struggling to live on an Ontario disability pension, Ontario Works and inadequate minimum-wage incomes. “Usually, there are a couple of children,” he said. “One mom comes with her three kids. Another woman with a boy, 10, is no longer with us. She couldn’t find affordable accommodation in the area. She’s now living in Hamilton.” The recent event marked the third decade and 21st year of the small congregation of 60 households’ food-sharing ministry in the Lakeshore. “The need has been growing, frankly,” Oussoren said. “Landlords in the area are making it more difficult for people to stay in the area. Increasingly higher rents and a desire by landlords to redevelop
their properties are having a very significant impact on residents.” The Lakeshore is a community of extremes, Oussoren said. “The Lakeshore is a real mixed bag,” he said. “You have houses going for almost $1 million, and on the other hand, very poor areas that landlords want to keep poor to keep people out and redevelopment for big gain.” The small congregation was hit with two blows this year. In January, fiscal constraints forced the congregation to abort Wesley Mimico Place, its eight-year redevelopment project. Its plan had envisioned a new church sanctuary, community space and 24 units of independent-living apartments for seniors 55 and older. More recently, the congregation sold its circa-1922 heritageprotected church building to a Montessori school.

Respect key to gender evolution
WRitE uS
W
e are breaking ground and removing barriers while navigating a cultural shift that has been referred to as the new post-gender era. In a relatively short time period, we have discovered the segregation of the sexes and the use of the pronouns he or she have been identified as obstacles as we welcome transgender people to our table of diversity. The two-gender, binary world of male and female is shifting. We now have gender-neutral driver’s licences, gender-free washrooms, Toby’s Law enshrining transgender people’s rights in Ontario and Bill C-16 working to do the same across Canada. And increasingly, people are adopting a cornucopia of alternative pronouns to the traditional he and she. Like any cultural shift, we are learning through and reacting by altering OuR ViEW listening our language and behaviours to reflect what we’ve discovered. In Hear the short, we are in the midst of a linguistic revolution that will impact voices for many facets of our lives before it ends. change A recent Angus Reid survey had promising results. Nearly 80 per cent of those participating agree Canada should work to accommodate and protect transgender people in society. To better educate our readers, Metroland has embarked on a three-part series that starts today and continues for the next two weeks to explore the linguistic and cultural implications of these changes. You will hear why the change is needed through the voices of those interviewed by reporter Kim Zarzour throughout her series. Studies show 47 per cent of transgender people have either considered suicide, attempted suicide or self-harmed in the course of their lives, according to Sawyer Arnold, director of Trans Inclusion, PFLAGDurham. “By referring to them by the incorrect gender, you increase the risk and add to the emotional distress,” Sawyer said. Proponents of gender-free washrooms cite safety concerns. Statistics show shockingly high levels of sexual abuse and assault against transgender people. For these people, simply choosing which washroom to use can be a daily dilemma. Changes in language and attitude will help. These changes are organic and will take time to evolve. Respect and decency should be foremost in our discussions.

Rail deck park a good idea, but costly
T
oday, Mayor John Tory’s executive committee turns its eye to an ambitious and expensive plan – to build a “rail deck” park, which is to say a park built literally on a deck, spanning over the downtown rail corridor from Bathurst Street to Blue Jays Way. It is certainly ambitious – the park would cover 21 acres of rail lands that currently divide downtown Toronto from its waterfront communities, and replace them with a green swathe of parkland that would provide some recreational relief for one of the fastestgrowing communities of tower dwellers in the country. And, oh Lord, it is going to be expensive: more than $1 billion to construct, according to very preliminary estimates, and more than that to secure the air rights from Metrolinx and CN over those tracks that will allow construction to
david nickle the city take place at all. The executive committee won’t be signing off on that at its September meeting – before that it is just a couple of million dollars, to refine the plans and move things along to the next stage. It’s hard to say that the idea of the park is not a good idea. Downtown Toronto is growing into a giant and potentially precarious residential community, made up of individuals and families squeezed into often very tiny quarters, and the real estate is getting swallowed up. Waiting another five years until the population reaches its breaking point, and then trying to acquire large-sized parkland from the remaining scraps could well be even more
expensive or, worse, simply impossible. The trouble is that while the rail deck park is a good idea, it isn’t the only idea that has caught the eye of Mayor Tory’s council. The city is spending about as much as the rail deck park just a few kilometres to the east, replacing the Gardiner Expressway there with another elevated expressway, against the long-term advice of city planners. A few more kilometres to the east, council has committed to building a onestop subway extension into Scarborough that costs as much again. And if the park is to go ahead, all of that – park included – will have to be paid for, almost certainly with money that comes from taxes and other revenues drawn from Toronto’s residents. Perhaps this will provide incentive for Toronto council to take its forthcoming
debate on revenue tools more seriously. The mayor, and a majority of council, have made it clear that property taxes are not a candidate for enhancement – and they’ve also made it clear that they don’t want to see the city sit still when it comes to improving and expanding its infrastructure. We should have parks. We should have subways, and light rail. And council has decided that we should have a great elevated highway to aid motorists getting to and through the city’s downtown. But it all leads to a bill that someone will have to pay – and having solidified our aspirations as we have, whoever pays that bill is going to need deep pockets.

Bishop Allen Academy students head out on the annual Grade 9 run Tuesday at Berry Road Park.
Bishop Allen Academy hosts fun run Close to 400 Grade 9 students from Bishop Allen Academy laced up their running shoes for a friendly milelong foot race this week. Now in its fourth year, the annual event took place Tuesday and had the teens running a circuit of local side streets from Berry Road Park, east to Park Lawn Road and back. “The purpose of the run is to encourage fitness, and to encourage friendly competition among individual students and also homeroom classes,” Nik Frlan, Bishop Allen’s cross country coach, said in an email to The Guardian.
Josh Burreci, 16, (left) cheers on runners to the finish line.
“It is one of the first fun events the students will do in their high school career at Bishop Allen Academy.”
It’s something urban planners have grappled with for decades: how to improve the last mile of travel between a transit station and home or work. A group of transportation experts sought answers to this issue during the Solving the Last Mile discussion at Ryerson University. Moderated by broadcaster Steve Paikin, a discussion “unpanel” spent nearly two hours debating solutions on better linking that last mile of transit access. For millions of regional commuters, the answer to the last mile is using infrequent and unreliable transit. Antoine Belaieff from Metrolinx said the agency has to provide significant amounts of free parking at its stations to entice commuters, even though it means swallowing up valuable land to build lots and requiring significant provincial subsidy for operations. “More and more we’re running out of land and hitting against physical constraints, such as local roads, which are congested,” said Belaieff, Metrolinx’s director for regional planning.

A GO Transit train passes over a sprawling commuter parking lot in a video screened during the Solving the Last Mile discussion.
“Each new space we build in a parking garage is about $40,000...so each time you drive to the station, the government writes a $40,000 cheque to store your car during the day.” Lauren Isaac pushed emerging technology as a potential solution to the last mile conundrum. The San Francisco transportation manager and blogger said Bay Area transit has increasingly partnered with private sector tech companies to provide shuttle or carpooling services. Not only is partnering with tech companies a win for local transit, it also affords the opportunity for data collection on transportation habits to inform future planning, Isaac said.
Solutions for improving the last mile will come with better land use decisions than they will from seeking to reduce trip times, argued Ryerson professor Mustafa Haider. “You have to understand congestion is a sign of economic health,” Haider said. “Detroit solved its traffic issues by going bankrupt.” Of great concern, said Haider, is the politically driven building of new transit, which has distorted property values, as seen by new housing development near stations pricing out large segments of the population. “To solve last mile and transportation problems, we have to stop politicians from making these decisions, which are really hurting us and the country,” he said.

The Toronto baby took the world by storm in 2011 when her parents decided not to reveal her gender to the world for her first years of life. Parents Kathy Witterick and David Stock wanted to let Storm decide what gender to identify with and, five years later, she is a she. The couple also made a conscious choice to keep their kids out of public school, to avoid, in part, the school system’s segregation of sexes. What happens when we erase gender divisions? Does going gender-free impact our behaviour? The research is unclear. Lynn Liben, a psychologist at Penn State, studied preschool classes to look at the effects of gender-coded language. She found when teachers lined children up by gender and emphasized gender in speech, (“Good morning, boys and girls”), students showed an increase in gender-stereotyped attitudes toward each other and their choice of toys. On the other hand, researchers Kumiko Fukumura (University of Strathclyde, Scotland), Jukka Hyönä and Merete Scholfield (University of Turku, Finland), found no correlation between the pronoun system we use and our gender thinking. In the Finnish language, genders are not differentiated; “hän” refers equally to both females and males, and yet Finns do not think about the gender of people any differently than speakers of English, the researchers report.
It used to be so simple, back in the days of Dick and Jane primary school readers. We learned grammar by memorizing basic rules. Dick was a ‘he’, Jane was a ‘she’, Spot was a dog and together they were … well, they. Turns out, it wasn’t so simple after all. Those clear-cut rules didn’t fit everyone and today those who don’t fit are speaking out, sparking what could be a linguistic revolution. The two-gender, binary world of male and female is shifting. We now have gender-neutral driver’s licences, gender-free washrooms, Toby’s Law enshrining transgender people’s rights in Ontario, and Bill C-16 working to do the same across Canada. And increasingly, people are adopting a cornucopia of alternative pronouns to the traditional he and she. “Gender is not black and white, but language is,” explained Chris Talbot, a female-to male transgender youth from Newmarket. Talbot, 18, prefers to be called he. He spoke with his guidance office in Grade 10 and soon his entire high school had switched references to he. Today, Talbot is studying at Georgian College in Orillia, making use of gender-free washrooms on campus, readily accepted by his male roommates in his school dorm. “People have been amazing about it, really. I’ve never had a bad experience, no bullying, no judging,” he said. “Maybe it’s because (trans
issues) are all over social media, but it has been easier than I thought.” Switching pronouns isn’t smooth for everyone, especially for those who don’t identify as male or female. At 16, Beatrice Vandikas stumbled upon new pronouns being used by an online blogger: fae and faer. “I’d been using they and them not realizing there was anything else. I was elated. I thought, Oh my gosh, that’s perfect! That’s me!” Vandikas had been dating a trans man at the time, dealing with “nasty rumours” in a small-town community, and did not start using those pronouns right away. Now Vandikas is more comfortable using fae (for she/he) and faer (for his/hers/him) – but also less upset when people don’t. Language is constantly evolving, Vandikas said. “It shouldn’t be that difficult, but changes like that are really hard for people, especially when they’re older.” Vandikas’ parents, for example, haven’t yet fully embraced the concept. Faer mother once asked faer to help her understand how fae would like her to talk about faer. Fae was encouraged, but faer mother’s use of the pronouns didn’t last – maybe, fae said, because it was such a foreign concept to the older generation, “so I just said to myself, she’s my mom, I’ll deal with it.” Reading that sentence may have been challenging for even the most open-minded readers, but Vandikas, and others who hope the English language evolves, said it’s worth the trouble. Respecting others is more important than being grammatically
How you can be gender sensitive ■ If you are uncertain about the gender identity of another person and have to refer to them in the third person, use they or them. ■ It is ok to politely ask which gender pronoun a person prefers. ■ If someone explains they are a trans woman, do not use masculine pronouns. ■ If someone explains they are a trans man, do not use feminine pronouns. ■ If you work in an office that has intake forms, include X or Other (if you absolutely must collect information about gender – but consider that you may not actually need information about gender). ■ If you work in a recreation facility, ensure there are trans-positive policies in place so that gender variant people can use the facilities without harassment. ■ Make sure there are gender-neutral bathroom options in your place of work. correct. Words hold power, Vandikas noted, especially when they feel wrong and especially when you have an identity disorder and rely on that perfect pronoun to understand who you are and find a sense of community. “When people say gender pronouns are too confusing, what they are really saying is they don’t want to take the time to question their assumptions about gender,” said York University associate professor Sheila Cavanagh. Gender is more complicated and nuanced than simple male and female, she said. “The importance of language, and gender pronoun usage, should not be underestimated.” Increasingly, professors at York U. and other North American postsecondary schools ask students to indicate their preferred gender pronoun when they introduce themselves. Some go further, allowing students to register their pronouns in the university computer systems; professors are urged to include their pronouns in email signatures.
Alicia Lapointe, PhD candidate at the University of Western Ontario faculty of education, suggested it may be easier for youth, who tend to view gender and sexuality differently. “They’re more fluid and open about it. By high school or postsecondary, it’s too late to unlearn any transphobia or homophobia. Elementary students, in particular, are often bullied because of gender expression.” Lapointe uses nametags that say “please use … pronouns” and introduces herself with: I’m Alicia and I use she, her, hers pronouns. “It’s a way to get people to see that you shouldn’t assume,” she said. “I don’t think we lose anything by acknowledging our wide diversity, or celebrating it. Our society is only better if we celebrate everyone for who they are.”

Successful ageing requires advance planning For many people, retirement planning is about getting an RRSP, waiting for the gold watch presentation and then deciding what they want to do for the next 20-30 years. It’s often too late and often results in a compromising surprise. And that’s why Gary Hepworth created “Hepworth & Associates” this year. Hepworth says “Successful ageing is about taking more control of that next stage in life and getting pretty excited about it” Gary is well versed in this area as not only the founder of Hepworth and Associates, but founder and chair of the CARP Etobicoke chapter. Further, as co-owner of Premier Homecare Services in Etobicoke, Hepworth says he finds people often call his office in a crisis and when fewer options exist.“If you don’t plan, someone will end up planning for you. It’s easier for you and your family if you have these conversations and have plans in place before you need them,” says Hepworth. Hepworth & Associates helps its clients focus on four key areas of Successful Ageing for seniors, preseniors and the families of both who want the best for their parents moving forward: • Lifestyle: Here’s where the “bucket list” comes in. Do you want to be able to travel or stay home? What hobbies or activities do you want to take up? Where do you want to volunteer your time? • Housing: Most people prefer to age in their own homes. But what processes can you put in place now to make that happen? Should you or your partner get sick, it’s important to consider the
options ahead of time. Do you move into a retirement home or long-term care? Or sell your family home for something smaller? Will you move in with your kids? There are various housing options with different costs, so it’s important to look into what option appeals to you. • Healthcare: The risks of developing chronic illness increase as you age, and the healthcare system can be difficult to navigate. Make plans and talk to your family about how you want to deal with it should an illness arise. As well, having an advocate with you in the hospital who can ask the right questions will make the process smoother. • Legal/Financial: While things like Wills, Powers of Attorney and End-of-Life care aren’t the most pleasant topics to bring up, meeting with a lawyer to determine how you would like to deal with these things will ensure you and your family aren’t put in a tough position later. Finally, how are you going to fund your lifestyle for nearly 30 years? Hepworth & Associates is a unique combination of consultancy, advocacy, coach and confidant, providing our clients with thoughtful, personalized, and truly independent advisory services. Through seminars, workbooks and one-on-one meetings with seniors and families of seniors, it is their mission to help establish and achieve your goals for successful ageing. James Gardens evolved into a gardener’s masterpiece We have Frederick Thomas James and his wife Margaret Rumney James to thank for Etobicoke’s beautiful James Gardens, which cover 8.5 hectares of hills, valley and forest beside the Humber River, south of Edenbridge Drive. Frederick was a highly successful Toronto fish merchant. He purchased most of this land from his fatherin-law, Thomas Rumney, in 1908. He added to it with purchases of adjoining land from developer Robert Home Smith. Frederick and Margaret first built a red-gabled cottage for family weekends. In 1927 they moved it to a new site where it became a garage. It was replaced by a large estate home made of stone quarried from the Humber River Valley. It too had red gables, giving the house its name. Robert Home Smith gave Margaret the honour of naming the road to their home, and she selected Edgehill Road after her
denise harris history corner family’s former home in Liverpool. She also named Romney Road, a block west of Edgehill. Her maiden name “Rumney” had originally been “Romney.” She was proud of her ancestor, English portrait painter George Romney, noted for his 24 engaging portraits of Lady Emma Hamilton, mistress of Lord Nelson. The James family transformed the land in the valley below their house into a gardener’s masterpiece. Much of the area had been swampy, but it was changed into Frederick’s ideal of perfection with picturesque gardens, waterfalls, terraces, lawns, nature trails, ponds and rockeries. Believing that the gardens should be shared beyond their family, a sign on a brown gate invited other garden lovers to enter any time except

Sunday. Frederick died in 1949 and Margaret in 1954. The prop-
erty had to be sold to settle the estate. A deal was struck for
Nature’s Counter
Metro Toronto to purchase the property for $150,000 in 1955. The deal almost fell
through because the recentlyformed Metro Toronto Parks Department was not yet equipped to take on this large area. After a private solution fell through, Etobicoke Township agreed to manage the park for $1 a year until Metro could take it on, which occurred in 1962. Today the gardens are open daily. Thousands of flowers, including 75,000 tulips, are planted annually. Designs and materials are changed annually in the rock gardens and under the wellpruned trees and shrubs. Part of the James’ house is now a community centre offering specialized preschool, arts and fitness programs, as well as a unique summer camp combining fine arts, ecology and athletics.

CONSUMER FEATURE
On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.
Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners
like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

Our Free Saturday Storefront Art Classes begin this weekend as well. We are kicking off the semester with SKETCHBOOK TO, a 6-week portfolio development class for youth 14 -20. Starting in
O
November we are offering a 3-week class for adults called CREATIVITY AND WELLBEING. In addition to the programming in our gallery, we also have an exhibition running until October 28. We’ve invited community member Islington Seniors’ Centre to exhibit work from their weekly art classes taught by Jacqueline Crawley. A MATTER OF PERSPECTIVES features artwork from 21 seniors in a variety of media (oil, acrylic, watercolour, and collage). For more information on the Storefront Gallery, Drop-In, any of the classes, or to register please contact our Program and Gallery Manager
Graham Curry at 416.622.8731 x 227, or graham@artsetobicoke.com. The programming in our Storefront Gallery is generously supported by The Geoffrey H. Wood Foundation and The Johansen-Larsen Foundation. In our community, there is a growing need for free, high-quality experiences in dance, poetry, visual arts and more. Your donation helps ensure that everyone has the opportunity to express their creativity and be inspired through the arts. To donate, please contact Development Manager Ruth Cumberbatch at 416-622-8731 x222 or ruth@artsetobicoke.com.
Dignity City Mural
ver the summer Arts Etobicoke received a StreetART Toronto grant to create a mural on the pedestrian underpass on Montgomery Road next to Etobicoke Collegiate Institute. We partnered with Amnesty International’s Project: Urban Canvas and hired artist Boo to bring to life Article #1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” Over the summer we have been hosting public consultations (online and in person) to get community feedback on the meaning of Article #1 and thoughts on the proposed mural design. Boo has been hard at work integrating the feedback and creativity of our community to her design. We have also been working with the youth at Etobicoke Collegiate Institute to incorporate their vision into the design and to give them training/experience working on a large-scale public art piece.
We are currently in the production stage of the mural and could use your help! We need people to assist with the painting process (working alongside Boo and painting sections of the mural) and to be Mural Attendants (sitting/ standing nearby the mural to answer questions about the project so Boo and the painters can keep working).
explore writing, drawing, and painting to express their creativity. Participants will explore art as a means of expression, discovery, collaboration and skill building. The class is taught by Natalie Kauffman, a visual artist, arts educator and educational coordinator at Walnut Studios. Class Details ■ Saturdays, 1:00 - 3:00pm ■ November 19 – December 3 ■ Classes held at Arts Etobicoke ■ Materials are included in each class To Register Call 416.622.8731 x227, or email: graham@artsetobicoke.com

Emily, SickKids Leukemia Patient
Today, over 80% of Canadian kids survive cancer. That’s an achievement. And a challenge. The Hospital for Sick Children is a leader in the fight against childhood cancer. Over 1,400 children in Canada are newly diagnosed with cancer each year, and a quarter of them come to the Garron Family Cancer Centre at SickKids. We’re creating a new reality: cancer is no longer a death sentence for children. In fact, in the last 50 years, the survival rate for childhood cancer has increased from 10% to over 80%. Our goal is 100%. Help us get there. Donate at sickkidsfoundation.com

Police to blitz congested intersections HOT lanes receive lukewarm response Police will be at seven Toronto intersections in October, working for the second time this year to help pedestrians and motorists move safely at spots where congestion has been the rule, said Mayor John Tory after meeting with his traffic working group Tuesday. At the same time, Tory announced a thing he’d been hoping to avoid: the closure of the Gardiner Expressway in late October, to finish resurfacing the western Gardiner. “The largest fall maintenance project will be the full closure of the Gardiner Expressway – there are many things to do,” Tory said. “It will most likely be that
the Gardiner Expressway will be closed Oct. 21 to 24. As luck would have it, that weekend would be Games 5 and 6 of the American League championship at the Rogers Centre and if that happens we’ll set a rain date for the following weekend.” Tory also said there won’t be a need for the fall closure of the Don Valley Parkway. But there will be a return of police to key busy intersections following what Tory called a successful blitz in June. “It had police at key intersections to help pedestrians
and cyclists at nine intersections,” Tory said. “When police were there, cars were able to clear the intersections, pedestrians moved in a more orderly way. The result was that pedestrians were safer.” He said that police and transportation officials haven’t yet reached a conclusion as to how successful the program was empirically. But the city is going ahead with a second phase, from Oct. 3 to 28 at York and Front; Front and Simcoe; Bay and Bloor; Queen and Bay; Sheppard and Yonge; University and Adelaide; and the Bay Street ‘clearway’.

A road toll advocacy group is lukewarm on the province’s first HOT lane. The high occupancy toll lane was recently introduced along the QEW, between Burlington and Oakville, charging single-occupant drivers, who have signed up, a fee for use. The lanes remain free for carpooling provided vehicles contain at least one passenger. It will cost $180 for three months’ HOT lane use, but Transport Futures doesn’t believe it’s enough to persuade people to get out of their congestion-causing cars and onto public transport. In an email, the group that organizes the annual Transport Futures road pricing conference, points out HOT lane use will cost $3 maximum for two-way daily use – less than half that of equivalent trips made on GO Transit. The group wants HOT lane costs to jump to $6.45 a day, equal to the current daily round-trip GO fare.

bike licences in Toronto is set to be introduced at the Sept. 27 public works and infrastructure committee meeting at City Hall. The motion by member Stephen Holyday will be to study a potential licence system for city cyclists. However, past proposals have been shot down, in part because of the expense required for licensing and overseeing the city’s cycling population. delaYs MIMIco IMproVeMents wMetrolInX

‘Vital’ services need to be protected >>>from page 1 representatives from Friends of Silver Creek and local sporting groups expressed apprehension that the school property’s Silver Creek Park-adjacent green space might be sold off to a townhouse developer – a “rumour” Etobicoke Centre Councillor John Campbell quickly refuted – even if the province should step in to purchase the school building itself in order to preserve the “vital” services contained within. Closed by the TDSB as an operating school in 1982, the school building currently houses Silver Creek Pre-School, a 40-year tenant of the property that each year serves 70 children aged 18 months to five years, 80 per cent of whom live with physical and/or developmental challenges. It also houses the Etobicoke Children’s Centre, an accredited, non-profit children’s
mental health centre that provides a variety of programs and services for about 1,200 children, youth and families each year. “At Silver Creek we have two really, really important organizations serving children with special needs,” Baker said in an interview with The Etobicoke Guardian following the meeting, noting that the Silver Creek file has been one of his top priorities since being elected. “It’s critical that we protect those services in the community, as well as the green space.” To those ends, Baker said talks between his office, the TDSB, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Child and Youth Services and Infrastructure Ontario are continuing. “Those conversations have to continue,” he added, noting that the province is currently in the midst of its due diligence work, including
engineering assessments on the school building. “Our hope is that we’ll have a resolution by the end of the fall. In fact, I’m pretty confident that we’ll have a whole site solution by the end of the fall.” While Tracie Napoli, cochair of Friends of Silver Creek School, said she was “very excited” at Baker’s news, she urged her fellow residents to hold off any celebrations until the ink is dry on the deal. “Until we get funding that is signed, sealed and delivered, it is not a done deal, so we cannot leave here tonight thinking that everything is fine,” she said. “Please know that, yes, this news is encouraging, but we need to keep the pressure on.” Napoli also encouraged her neighbours to visit the Friends of Silver Creek School website at friendsofscs.com to stay informed of any new developments.
