Immediate funding sought for waterfront transit needs RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Mayor John Tory, mindful of the impending Ontario budget, implored the province to provide immediate funding toward the city’s waterfront transit needs. Insisting he isn’t seeking to attack or embarrass the Wynne Liberals who are set to release this year’s fiscal budget likely within a couple of weeks, Tory called for provincial money to fund transit improvements benefiting growing waterfront communities from Long Branch to Woodbine. "I am trying to make it abundantly clear to the Ontario government of the great opportunity available for them ... to build transit we need right now," said Tory during a news conference Tuesday near the former Mr.

Christie factory site at the northeast corner of Park Lawn Road and Lake Shore Boulevard, where local residents want a GO Transit stop built to benefit the Humber Bay Shores community.Tory, whose plan to enact road tolls on the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway to pay for infrastructure was stymied by the province, paid tribute to provincial commitments already made for transit. But with incoming support from Ottawa he insisted there also needs to be new money from Queen’s Park to multiply the federal commitment. "Those investments were the beginning of building up Toronto transit to where it needed to be and must not be the end," he said. The city is currently completing study of a waterfront master plan for transit, part of a

Etobicoke resident wins Randstad Engineering Challenge Etobicoke resident Balaji Ganesan ended the Randstad Engineering Challenge by taking the top prize along with seven other winners. The challenge works in close co-operation with engineers of the Formula 1 Williams Racing team and has attracted many mechanical engineering Balaji professionals Ganesan across Canada to put their skills against their industry colleagues. For three weeks, contestants participated in a series of ’laps’ made up of multiple-choice questions. The top prizes were awarded to participants who were able to solve the problem quickly.

Ganesan and the other winners will travel to the Williams Racing Factory in Grove, United Kingdom for a meet-and-greet with the engineers. They will also be touring the facility and learn more about Formula 1 engineering and race car driving from one of the world’s leading Formula 1 teams. This challenge is a first for Canada and has attracted winners from across seven countries including: Canada, Singapore, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, India and the USA. This year is Randstad’s second time participating in this campaign and has been an official partner of Williams since 2006. Their partnership has created many new joint initiatives between the two companies. The Engineering Challenge is the latest initiative resulting from the partnership.

NAChorale concerts benefits youth CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Rexdale’s New Apostolic Church will celebrate the Easter season with a special Passiontide concert benefiting the Albion Boys and Girls Club. Presented by the church’s NAChorale Concert Choir, the Reflections on His Passion, Sacrifice and Glory concert will take place on Good Friday, April 14, featuring works by Mendelssohn, Handel and Schubert, as well as some "beautiful old standbys" like Abide With Me and Christ the Lord is Risen Today. "What we’re trying to accomplish is this sort of deeply moving, reflective environment to our music," Brigitte Emery, NAChorale’s longtime artistic director, said of the concert’s program. "It speaks to the Stations of

the Cross - Palm Sunday, the Garden of Gethsemane and the crucifixion, and then, of course, the glorious resurrection. So we’re covering off the whole story of the Passiontide through music." The NAChorale choir, Emery added, consists of about 40 singers spanning in age from 15 to 55 - resulting in a "beautiful marriage" of voices. "It’s a really nice dynamic," she said. " Many people comment on the uniquely rich and warm sound of our choir, and I know it’s that marriage between the young and older voices together." NAChorale will be joined at Friday’s concert by three of the New Apostolic Church’s other choirs, including its children’s group, its French African singers and its Caribbean choristers. "They typically perform with us, which is one of the

great ways we speak to the tastes and the likes of our broad audience," Emery said, noting that each of the groups brings a different "flair" to complement NAChorale’s classical sacred sound. The free concert, she added, will include some audience singalong pieces to engage those in attendance "to release that emotion, and to connect and be a part of the whole musical journey." Doors to the Reflections on His Passion, Sacrifice and Glory concert open at 6:30 p.m., Friday, April 14 at the New Apostolic Church Rexdale, 6484 Finch Ave. W. All are welcome. Refreshments will be served following the performance, and free-will donations to the Albion Boys and Girls will be gratefully accepted. priority list of projects endorsed by Toronto council. But funding for the list, which includes the relief subway line, is not guaranteed by any level of government. "We cannot have thousands of residents living minutes from downtown shortchanged by transit," said Tory.Joining Tory were Etobicoke city councillors Mark Grimes and Justin Di Ciano, who have called for immediate improvements to local transit. Some transit watchers expressed disappointment Tory made no specific ask of money for projects required for improving waterfront transit, and for resisting property tax increases to support new infrastructure. "John Tory is begging other governments to fund transit projects that he refuses to fund through any property tax hike,"

All involved stay within their role, enforcement or prayer MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Police aren’t the enemy, but faith leaders are not police. That’s the consistent message of the Etobicoke Strategy, which brings clerics and police officers into neighbourhoods together at events meant to build mutual trust. Everyone sticks to their assigned roles, though. Pastors don’t visit neighbourhoods to crack cases. Their job is to heal and to pray, not police, says Rev. Andrew King, of Smyrna Seventh Day Adventist Church.

"The people in the community do not trust the police," King said at 32 Division headquarters on Finch Avenue West, before a community walk through Jamestown April 4. "We believe that we bring that calming effect and a different perspective on who the police are." People comforted by the Strategy - a group entering its 12th year, inspired by a similar movement in Boston - include residents whose homes have been raided by police, as well as victims of crime. The pastors, King said, understand the police can’t enforce the law, "and then go in and soothe after." Members of the group, however, choose not to vilify police, but walk handin-hand, saying: "We all have a problem to solve." Rev. Carmen Lewis, of the Lighthouse Fellow-

"What we do best is

pray, and we’re always praying for the community," she said. In winter, Strategy

members visit malls. They meet young people planning to drop out of school, and talk to them about

staying; the Strategy can also direct them to food bank, or a summer job, Lewis said. The group meets the third Thursday of each month at the Lighthouse, 80 Royal Crest Rd. Everyone is welcome to attend. Strategy members believe prayer changes things, and that they can let people in challenged neighbourhoods know they’re not alone, King said. "When things don’t make sense, we can give you hope." Etobicoke North Coun. Vince Crisanti said the group also supports local food banks, single mothers, and anybody who needs help. Seventh Day Adventists organize an anti-drug march through Jamestown every August, Crisanti said. "People come out of their homes by the hundreds. It’s phenomenal."

EDITORIAL | OPINION

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

Toronto’s embarrassment of riches spells trouble Toronto has always been a city bursting at the seams. We don’t have enough road capacity for all our cars and trucks, and our public transit system is underdeveloped and overcrowded. We are just getting a handle on our aging sewer infrastructure, which has been neglected for decades and has shown it after heavy rains. Mitigating poverty and homelessness has been a constant struggle, and our stock of subsidized public housing cannot keep up. Now we can add another pressure to the list of forces bedevilling Toronto: Wealth - in the form of the city’s obscenely overvalued stock of housing that is decidedly not subsidized. According to the Toronto Real Estate Board, the price of a house in the Toronto area has risen by 33.2 per cent over the past year, and now sits at $900,000 on average. That is good news for people who’ve bought their home in the past decade. It augurs badly for young families or anyone else hoping to put down roots in our communities through the traditional and powerful route of home ownership. The choices for those of more limited means are unappetizing. Even those earning high-five-figure salary will have a hard time gathering a down payment and paying a mortgage on a $1-million property, but attempting to do so is one option. Rental housing is another possibility - but hyperinflated real estate costs have had the effect of hyperinflating the rental market, too. A third option - simply seeking housing elsewhere - is the perhaps the most viable for house-hunters, but disastrous for a city. As Canada’s largest city and the country’s major financial centre, Toronto has always been marked as a focal point for wealth, but that has never been the city’s sole identity, and certainly not its best identity. At our best, we live the city’s motto; Diversity Our Strength. And diversity is sorely curtailed, in a city where the price of entry is on average $1 million. It’s encouraging to see our political leadership at all three levels of government taking note, even if it is somewhat belated. Whether the actions that have so far been proposed - taxes on vacant units and offshore investor purchases to cool speculation, and changes to the Tenant Protection Act to mitigate gouging rent increases - will be enough, is another question. There is another solution; a catastrophic market correction that will cost people their homes, but eventually set the ship right. Let us pray it doesn’t come to that.

Prayers in the rain for troubled Jamestown The rain starts falling as they walk up Jamestown Crescent. Memories come back, every one of them painful. "Beckles got shot at this door, right up there. We had a prayer rally up here," says Rev. Carmen Lewis. Gordon Beckles, 46, died on his porch in March 2015. Lecent Ross, 14, was killed as a handgun went off four months later. "Her mom is just up here. Oh, there’s just been so many of them," says Al Bowen, a local pastor. Bowen points his borrowed pink umbrella at where Candice Rochelle Bobb, 35, was shot in a car last May. Her unborn son died three weeks later. In front of Jamestown’s food bank, members of the Etobicoke Strategy begin

They’re persistent visitors to this and other neighbourhoods, inspired by a Boston movement bringing faith leaders and police officers together on community walks. place, the wall of silence goes lower." The rain and wind increase. Andrew King, another pastor, asks God to guide police working in the community. "Wash away the crime, the grime, Father," he says, asking God to remove the "negative element" here, to give hope to Jamestown’s children, food to its cupboards, jobs to people not working. "They may not know it," he adds, "but we’re interceding for them, praying for them." Vincent Crisanti, the local councillor, says the city and its Toronto Community Housing Corporation do their best. He points to new courtyard stone among the drab townhouses, more se-

curity cameras, better lighting. Lewis greets a group of children standing outside, asks if they’re enjoying the rain. Do the community walks work? "You find that people are more willing to come out and talk, even with police around," says Const. Anthony Amantea, but notes there were two shootings in Jamestown this year. "It’s hard to say whether it’s getting better." As the group walks back to their cars, King says he lives in a safe community. "Why can’t these people?" Seeing they can is a responsibility for all of us. Reach Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com.

EDUCATION

Toronto youth dictate major curriculum change Toronto Youth Cabinet led push for financial literacy learning across Ontario JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com When it comes to providing a quality education, those who stand to benefit most - youth - are often left without a voice at the table. With financial literacy set to earn increased attention in Ontario classrooms, however, students across the province may want to give thanks to the Toronto Youth Cabinet (TYC). First established 1998 by Toronto City Council, the TYC started out as a way of getting youth involved in municipal decisions. Nearly two decades later, the group has lent a youth voice to issues ranging from housing to transit to employment to education. With the provincial government’s late March announcement that financial literacy would be one of the major planks of a career studies pilot program, one of the TYC’s main objectives have been achieved. Students will now get a firmer footing in terms of earning and saving, budgeting and money management. The TYC’s focus on boosting financial literacy education started in 2016, when Prakash Amarasooriya joined the team and took on the role of school boards lead. He noted that in talking to youth about shortcomings in the education system, the lack of financial literacy education was a common refrain. "We did research to see how financial literacy was taught in schools - we looked into the Ontario curriculum - and there were mentions of it but it wasn’t really directly addressed," said Amarasoori-

Justin Skinner/Metroland

Toronto Youth Cabinet members Edwin White Chacon (left), Prakash Amarasooriya, Bri Gardner, Riley Peterson and Tom Gleason were instrumental in making financial literacy a bigger part of the Ontario curriculum. ya. "It was dispersed throughout other courses, but it wasn’t a focus. It felt more like an afterthought." There had been repeated calls for mandatory money skills to be taught in high school from various groups and politicians. The TYC also approached the Ministry of Education last summer to raise the issue, but felt their initial overtures were rebuffed. "What we got from them was that they thought they were doing a good enough job with financial literacy," Amarasooriya said. Not content with that response, the TYC created a five-phase plan to increase the pressure on the

government to devote more class time to financial literacy. They started with a petition and followed it up with a press release, and the attention those steps garnered was enough that the final phases of their plan - taking the matter to the legislature, conducting workshops and airing videos from youth talking about the importance of financial literacy education - were not necessary. "Fortunately, the attention we got in the media was enough that we started to see the slight differences in the minister’s statements over the next two to three weeks," said TYC ex-

ecutive director Tom Gleason. "It went from ’We’re confident things are working well’ to ’Changes are coming.’" Gleason added that the TYC’s actions received nearly unanimous consent from people from across the political spectrum. Amarasooriya noted financial literacy education will better prepare students for life outside the classroom in ways many core courses may not. "It will help students take a look at their goals, values and (financial) decision-making and help them understand what their needs are and what their wants are," he said.

"They’ll also get familiar with things like mortgages, financing and leases, or TFSAs and RRSPs. Those things can be confusing or daunting when you don’t really know about them, and this will help students understand them better." That knowledge will better enable young people to take control of their financial futures, giving them the tools they need to make smarter decisions. Making the careers course and its associated financial literacy education mandatory will be another big win for students across the province. "People from disadvan-

taged neighbourhoods will get as much in-school learning about financial literacy as people from affluent neighbourhoods," Amarasooriya said. "And where putting a useful topic in another course was shown to be ineffective, this will make it way more useful to students." Education Minister Mitzie Hunter said she was happy to hear from the TYC when it approached her with its call for increased financial literacy in schools. Having taken her role in the ministry last June, she was quick to see the importance of such instruction. "They came to me to talk about ’How do we bring this into schools?’ and I was really pleased to let them know that I was very supportive of this and wanted to see it happen," she said. Hunter added that she was impressed with the TYC’s commitment and preparation in bringing about change, noting that having engaged youth makes the education system work better not only for the students but for the province as a whole. "It’s very important to me that I hear (from) students and connect with them on their learning and on their education," she said. "Listening to students and allowing them to share their ideas and their perspectives around their learning is extremely important." With the TYC and other engaged youth organizations taking on leadership roles, there will surely be no shortage of ideas and perspectives coming the minister’s way.

Crane ceremony at SickKids kicks off 16th Meagan’s Walk Though nearly 16 years have passed since Meagan Bebenek passed away as the result of a brain tumour, the young girl’s impact continues to be felt. With a community of supporters rallying around the Bebenek family, the annual Meagan’s Walk has become a major fundraising initiative, bringing in more than $4.5 million for pediatric brain tumour research at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) since 2002. On Monday, April 10, more than 1,000 origami cranes were dropped off at SickKids to mark the launch of the 16th Meagan’s Walk. The cranes symbols of peace and long life - were presented by students to SickKids ambassadors and staff in memory of Meagan. As has been the case in the past, the walk will take place on Mother’s Day

Come learn to tell your story as a family with instructor Melanie Fernandez Alvares. This “Searching for Migration Stories” workshop will offer a group of adults and children different creative activities and writing techniques that encourage self-expression to create individual and collaborative stories. The final artwork will be ready for display as part of the My City My Six Exhibition at the Arts Etobicoke Storefront Gallery and outdoor Art Alley for Fall 2017. Adults and Youth may sign up individually as well.

Arts Etobicoke is currently seeking applications for a new Executive Director. For more information on the position, please visit our website: artsetobicoke.com and look under the “about us” tab.

Beat Lower Back, Disc And Sciatic Pain Now

T

hankfully, new natural treatment methods help many find the relief they had been searching for. Sciatica is a painful condition that affects the sciatic nerve. The pain usually radiates into one or both buttocks, descends the back of the leg and can sometime be felt in the foot. It is often a severe, knife-like pain, but can also be noticed as numbness or tingling in the leg and foot. It is unpredictable and does not go away even when you change positions or lay down. Sciatica can result from years of poor posture, muscle strain, pregnancy, excess weight, wearing high heels, or sleeping on a very soft mattress. Sciatica is often a symptom of a slipped disc, pinched nerve or arthritis. Although pain pills may temporarily cover up the symptoms, our holistic approach can provide a more effective, long term relief. “Our team members apply their individual skills and knowledge to make an accurate diagnosis and administer the right treatment that will get the best result for each patient.”

Dr. Peter Ng has a special interest in natural pain relief and Chinese medicine.

Good Friday road hockey tradition scores 50 years TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com 1967. More than half of Canada’s population of 20 million was younger than 25. Centennial fever gripped the nation as Canada invited the world to celebrate at Expo 67. The Toronto Maple Leafs won their 13th - and last Stanley Cup. That Good Friday after sunrise service, Jon Linton, 14, organized a road hockey game at Wedgewood Junior School for himself and eight buddies from then St. James-Islington United Church’s active and popular youth group. This Friday, half those guys - joined by 18 other friends, relatives, spouses and children - will play the 50th consecutive Good Friday hockey game. "After service, we had the day in front of us. We thought, ’what to do now?’ So we went home, got our sticks, used bricks for goals

and played road hockey. We did it again the next year. "It has become a noble tradition," said Linton, 64, a management consultant who lives in downtown Toronto. Good Friday’s forecast is sunny and a seasonal 14C. In years past, players braved snow, heavy rains, even scorching heat. Linton is the only player to hit the asphalt for all 50 games. Many have played for decades. Players are consultants, engineers, entrepreneurs, teachers, school principals. The original guard are in their 60s, their kids 25 to 30, with other players in their 40s. Most hail from Toronto, Mississauga and Oakville, but some journey from Owen Sound, Kitchener and Sudbury. This year, three women, including Linton’s daughter, Katie, 30, will take up sticks. "We’ve become a little more gender-friendly over the years. It’s inter-gender

Peter Henderson, (left) Katie Linton, Aldo Violo, David Lawry and Jon Linton, as seen on front, are gearing up for an annual road hockey game which began after services at St. James United Church 50 years ago. and intergenerational," Linton said. Katie Linton will never forget the first year she played in her mid-teens. "A neighbourhood kid asked if he could play," Linton recalled. "We always wel-

come kids in the neighbourhood. The more the merrier. He accidentally hit Katie in the mouth with his stick. She lost her two front teeth. "The poor kid was mortified. We haven’t seen him since."

A few years ago, Linton’s brother-in-law Aldo Violo, a recently retired VIA train engineer, snapped his Achilles tendon while playing. He’s now a goalie. "We’ve never had any broken bones. Nobody has

had a heart attack. We’ve been fairly lucky," Linton said. Last year, Linton scored a goal, his first in a decade: "It was a glorious triumph." The ball usually drops around noon. Play lasts until around 2 p.m. "We play until we drop," Linton laughed. "Then we’re pretty exhausted. So we head down to Orwell’s (Pub) for lunch and a couple of pints. "It’s the best beer of the year for me. We play really hard. I find the beer goes down really easy and it’s delicious." He wondered if an event like the Good Friday road hockey tradition would take off today. "There were fewer things to do then, in a way," he said. "Nowadays, maybe you wouldn’t get the same dynamic going. People will go watch Netflix. Or they go meet their friends because they got a text. "We were self-reliant. We made our own fun."
