Cinespace studios full up filming TV series, movies Kipling Avenue site favoured for accessibility TOM GODFREY etg@insidetoronto.com South Etobicoke is being dubbed “Burbank of Canada” due to the many highly acclaimed TV shows and movies being filmed that create hundreds of jobs. It took dozens of workers weeks to build a replica of a Kandahar air base for shooting the television show Combat Hospital and then Moscow’s famed Red Square for top-grossing Resident Evil 5 in a parking lot of Cinespace Film Studios on Kipling Avenue. Cinespace Vice-President Jim Mirkopoulos said up to 2,000 people can be working at the 30-acre Film Studio Campus on some days shooting TV hits as Reign, Beauty and the Beast, The Strain and 12 Monkeys, a science-fiction drama set to air next year. Mirkopoulos on this day was giving a tour of the 750,000-squarefoot facility to Etobicoke-Lakeshore MP Bernard Trottier, in whose riding the studio is located; fellow MPs Stella Ambler, Rick Dykstra and Senator Don Meredith also attended. He said the highly acclaimed Reign, a period drama set in medieval times, occupies 10 sets and employs about 600 people. It costs up to $3 million to shoot a hour-long episode and 22 episodes are planned. The studio is crawling with carpenters, electricians and construction workers who are building elaborate medieval castles, courtyards and hallways required for Reign. Not far away, wardrobe designers work on costumes and others on props the actors will

use. “Right now we are completely filled,” Mirkopoulos said. “This is the largest campus of its kind anywhere in Canada and we are at capacity until next April.” His family has been in the film business for about 26 years and have another studio on Booth Avenue, and a third on Eastern Avenue in the Beach. They purchased the old Consumers Glass facility about five years ago and converted it into a studio, where space is rented out to production companies for filming TV programs and movies.

A street in Moscow replicated for Resident Evil 5.

“We decided to expand to Etobicoke because Toronto is getting harder to find more space to expand,” Mirkopoulos said. Television and movie producers and directors also love working here because it is away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Toronto. “We don’t need another downtown location to shoot at,” said Felix Gray, the first assistant director of Reign. “We like working in Etobicoke because everything is close and accessible.” John Weber, the executive producer of Reign and Beauty and the Beast, agreed. “Etobicoke is fabulous place for us to shoot,” Weber said. “The location is great because we are near the airport and close to a lot of our suppliers.” Some popular movie and TV shows filmed at the campus includes: Gladiator, Pompeii, Hannibal, Hemlock Grove, Enemy; The Mortal Instruments, The Expanse and CBC’s Murdoch Mysteries. Trottier, who organized the tour, said the film industry creates jobs and stimulates the local economy. “I am very pleased by the number of jobs this industry creates,” he said. “South Etobicoke is now the Burbank of Canada.”

TECHNOLOGY

Flying ‘drones’ being used to film scenes at Cinespace High-tech drones are taking to the air in Etobicoke to help shoot TV shows and movies. The drones, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), are being used at Cinespace Film Studios on Kipling Avenue, to shoot aerial shots for the hit TV medieval drama, Reign. A small Ingersoll company, called Sk ymotion Video, has been busy using its eight-rotor Octocopter with a camera attached to shoot scenes for Canadian and British TV productions. The drones, which are also used in war zones, are just starting to be used by moviemakers in Canada and the U.S. since they are now more affordable. Pilot Charles Chuck Taylor said a camera fastened to the bottom of his drone can photograph a scene as the device floats quietly overhead. Taylor said the $45,000 Octocopter can stay in the air for about 12 minutes. “It uses batteries and there a lot of batteries to be changed,” he said. “It takes great shots and everyone is happy.”

Taylor said its eight rotors provide a stable aerial platform for shooting and power for lifting heavy payloads. The device uses an array of sensors including GPS, barometric and threeaxis gyros to stabilize itself in flight. An advanced computerized flight algorithm is also used to ensure the “shots come out smooth and sharp”. Taylor said the drone is being used to photograph some of the opening scenes for three episodes of Reign. “We are getting more and more work,” he said. “More TV shows are starting to use us.” He is licensed to fly the device and uses an assistant to help capture the shot. Cine space V ice - Pre sid ent Jim Mirkopoulos said the drones are the latest technology being used by moviemakers. “They cost less than renting a helicopter or small plane to get an aerial shot,” he said, adding the UAVs are quiet, stable and works well for moviemaking use. ~Tom Godfrey

Keeping an eye on your neighbourhood

W

e’d like to hear about the best practices of your local Neighbourhood Watch. It’s because we think the best ideas are often old ones, and where the safety of a community is concerned, neighbours watching out for each other is about as effective as you can get. An organized, sustained program like Neighbourhood Watch takes it a step further, and is a program that should be maximized on our streets and across the city. Residents almost always support one another in time of crisis, or in the face of tragedy. We’ve seen that locally many times – just last week in Leslieville, after the two-alarm fire on Minto Street that had residents checking in on one another and offering assistance to police. In south Etobicoke, the rash of summer breakins and assaults have people up in arms - watching out over each other’s houses and noting any suspicious activity to police. That collaboration is inspiring our view to see, but it’s almost too bad it happens only after a crime or tragBe proactive in edy has already taken place. We need to be proactive if we effort to keep want to have any lasting effect on safety of our communities. community safe theNeighbourhood Watch can help us do that. Created in the 1980s by the Crime Prevention Association of Toronto (CPAT), it empowers neighbourhoods, businesses, and individuals to take action to reduce crime. Though the familiar signs are up all over the city, indicating the existence of a Neighbourhood Watch Group, we’re curious to know how many are actually still active? We’re willing to bet far less than the number of signs still up. The success of the program is entirely dependent on the people of the neighbourhood. Even CPAT acknowledges on its website that programs go dormant when people move on, or they feel the particular reason for starting one in the first place has been solved, or the community once again feels safe. We shouldn’t take that sense of security for granted. We’d like to find out how many Neighbourhood Watch Programs are active in Toronto. What’s the experience been, for those involved? Do groups share information, advice - or do they even know other groups exist? We’d like to investigate the possibility for growth and collaboration on a broader scale. The potential to deter crime is in our hands, but it’s only effective when residents work together towards that goal. If you belong to a Neighbourhood Watch Group, contact us at etg@insidetoronto.com to let us know.

column

Election candidates with no name recognition still have plenty to say M ayoral candidates – at least some of them – get a lot of attention in Toronto municipal elections, and rightly so: the choice Torontonians make for mayor sets the future direction of the city more than any single vote. But there are 44 other elections taking place – and some of those elections are more important than others. In 2010, the Ford administration wouldn’t be what it became if Doug Ford hadn’t stepped in to hold onto the Ward 2 Etobicoke North seat after Rob Ford left it, to take the mayoralty. Like too many other wards with well-known incumbents, Ward 2 has become a stronghold... not for an individual – but a family, the Ford family which has held it for 14 years. And Doug is so confi-

dent in its strength that he’s suggested his young nephew and intended successor Michael Ford need not even do interviews to take on the job. The brand in Rexdale is that strong. Actually, it may not be that strong. The Ford brothers have done much to dismantle their city-wide brand, and more to the point – motivate some fairly sophisticated opposition both city wide and more importantly in the ward. That is where Andray Domise comes into the picture. A financial advisor and writer who spent his childhood in Rexdale, but still lives in Etobicoke, the 33-year-old AfricanCanadian has been offering up a pointed critique

of the Ford brand in terms of its bedrock support in north Etobicoke and among African-Canadian young people. He took on the idea of a Ford stronghold directly in a conversation that took place just prior to Michael Ford registering. “The whole thing has to do with anger and resentment,” he said. “A lot of support comes from people who feel disconnected and cut off from Toronto’s political establishment. You can see, looking around Etobicoke neighbourhoods, why people get the impression that nobody cares – all they have is half-finished projects and empty promises. If you can’t rely on people who represent you to get the job done, you’re going to end up rallying around somebody who is going to capture all that anger and resentment and passion.”

Domise doesn’t hide his own anger, but he is betting that the residents of Ward 2 will eventually let go of that anger and resentment after being allowed to be more directly involved in deciding the shape of their community. Domise is also, of course, just a candidate right now – one of 13 running in Ward 2, and one of 12 without the advantage of name recognition, and by no means established to be the best choice among them. So his plans to turn Ward 2 from stronghold to freehold might be premature. But he is running a campaign that at least indicates a sense of the stakes on Oct. 27, both for city and for community.

Ford responsible for Mayor brings protests upon himself putting personal issues in the spotlight: reader To the editor: Re: ‘Rob- Ford and his hecklers need to stick to the issues,’ Editorial, July 24. I understand the frustration and exasperation expressed in your editorial last month, calling on Mayor Rob Ford and those who constantly heckle him to stick to city issues. You plaintively point out what’s needed is discussion based on facts, not emotions. Makes sense. But what you failed to acknowledge is this man who masquerades as our chief magistrate is the one who introduced personal issues into the discussion in the first place. He is always on the attack and neither invites nor encourages rational discussion of any subject. He rants and raves like a spoilt brat and has no conception of how to work with other people. He talks up a storm about fighting criminals yet spends a lot of his time

with just such individuals. He ignores or ridicules rules – those are made for other people to follow. And he always manages to be on the wrong side of almost every issue. The only way to end this Circus of Darkness is for Ford to go. I, for one, am fed up with the nonsense he generates everywhere he goes. In October, let’s elect someone who is intelligent, understands how to tackle the real issues that confront this city and, above all, is sober – in all senses of the word. Keeble McFarlane

To the editor: Re: ‘Rob Ford and his hecklers need to stick to the issues,’ Editorial, July 24. Your editorial is really wishful thinking. Mayor Rob Ford has brought the protests upon himself by his lying, hypocrisy, incompetence, crude and rude, racist, abusive, bullying behaviour, aided and abetted by his enabler, brother Doug Ford. How many times, when other candidates speak to the issues, do you notice candidate Ford is silent, missing in action, running from the media or hiding in his office while Doug acts as though he is the mayor? On those infrequent occasions when Rob isn’t incommunicado, he proves he has no grasp of most of the issues. He blathers on about the illu-

has nothing to do with equality, but everything to do with special treatment? I am in favour of fair treatment

“Briarly”, the home of William and Jessie Montgomery on Dundas Street West in Islington, ca. 1900. Bearded man is William, and Jessie sits in a chair to his left.

Briarly home lost to us forever, 25 years ago Chance to preserve 1870s home missed by one vote

T

he home known as “Briarly” was named for the briar roses that once adorned its gardens. And like those roses, this lovely mansion adorned the landscape of Islington for more than 150 years before disappearing forever 25 years ago. Originally built in the 1830s as a one-storey Regency cottage, the house was sold to wealthy businessman John Bull Bagwell in 1850. He enlarged the house, adding a second storey, a surrounding porch and Italianate detailing. The exterior was covered in white stucco, with a front door of stained glass. Inside, the house had a graceful staircase, fine woodwork, marble fireplaces and elegant plaster mouldings. Surrounded by a white picket fence, the house

denise harris history corner sat in a treed, park-like setting. In 1870, the house was bought by Mrs. Douglas as a gift for her daughter and son-in-law, Jessie and William Montgomery. William was the eldest son of Thomas and Margaret Montgomery, and the only one of their seven children to survive them. In 1879, William inherited all of Thomas’s vast estate, including Montgomery’s Inn and more than 250 other properties across Ontario. Briarly was the perfect setting for this wealthy couple to raise their 10 children. Jessie died in 1915 at age 83, and William in 1920 at age 89, and both are buried in Islington Burying Ground. Descendants continued to own Briarly, with the last occupant being William’s grandson, Dr. Donald Gunn. When Gunn died in 1986, his will directed that Briarly be offered for sale to the City of Etobicoke at 20 per cent below market value, but the city declined the offer. Briarly was subsequently sold twice on the open market.

In 1989, the latest owner offered the house to the city for free if they removed it from the property. There was empty city land adjacent to Montgomery’s Inn to place the house; the cost to move it would be $200,000; and an architecture firm offered to restore the house in exchange for 25 years of occupancy, with the house turned back to the city at the end of that time. This seemed like the perfect solution not only to save Briarly, but also to complement the heritage of Montgomery’s Inn. Sadly, Etobicoke’s council voted against paying for the move – by one vote. In August 1989, Briarly was demolished. It was replaced by a private street of townhomes called “Briarly Lane.” And to those who value our heritage, it’s difficult not to remember that if Etobicoke council had voted differently in 1989, we would be experiencing the pleasure of seeing a restored Briarly transferred back to the city this year. But with some of those parent volunteers – all of whom are trained musicians – looking to move on soon, and with no qualified takers willing to fill their positions with just the small honorarium on offer, the choir is now looking for outside funding so they can continue providing high-quality, affordable music instruction to local children. “We’re now applying for charitable status and we’re hoping to get some sponsorships to keep things going and to be able to hire professionals to continue with the choir,” said Mimico Children’s Choir President Mary Bella, who is stepping down as co-director and administrator of the choir. “As professional musicians, it’s really just thinking about how we need to be able to replace ourselves ultimately, but with no compensation to offer our replacements, it would be dead in the water if we ever just left.” So heading into their eighth season this fall, Bella said the choir’s steering committee decided the best way to move forward would be to apply for charitable status for community-based children’s choir, so they can apply for grants to more adequately compensate their directors, accompanist and administrator. “We’d like to be able to get a little closer to market rates so we can obtain good people,” she said, noting last year’s honorarium paid to the choir’s volunteer directors was less than 20 per cent of the going rate for conductors of children’s choirs.

Young members of the Mimico Children’s Choir are pictured above at their December 2013 Christmas concert appearance with Weston Silver Band at the Church of the Redeemer in downtown Toronto. Left, choir members perform at their Annual Spring Concert, held on May 24 at Mimico Baptist Church.

Founded in 2007 as a ministry of Mimico Baptist Church, Mimico Children’s Choir today is composed of about 35 south Etobicoke schoolchildren (hailing mainly from John English, St. Leo’s, Norseman and other local schools) divided into a junior division (for kids in grades 1 to 3) and a senior division (for grades 4 to 7). Throughout each season, which runs from mid-September to early June, the choir meets Thursdays after school for rehearsals and snack

time from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. at the church, and performs at two major concerts – the Christmas in Mimico event over the holidays featuring yuletide classics, and a seasonending spring concert in which the kids usually take on hits from their favourite musicals, including Annie and Oliver. “It’s a lot of fun, and the kids just love it. We’re slightly more casual than some of the other more established children’s choirs, in that we like to let the kids sing with their own voices and not conform,” said Jennifer Robinson, one of Mimico Children’s Choir’s co-directors, noting the choir’s repertoire ranges from folk favourites, to classical, to show tunes. “It’s been amazing to see the children’s development over the last few years, especially now that they’re singing in harmony. It’s very exciting. But even if someone isn’t the greatest

Every year (the children are) getting more harmony and more ability and independence in terms of singing, so it’s really great to see them grow. – Mary Bella, choir president

singer, that doesn’t matter – they still get to be part of the group.” While the Mimico Children’s Choir is no longer as closely affiliated with the Mimico Baptist Church as it originally was under founder Magaret Nealon, who has since died, Bella said its core purpose remains the same: “Margaret started something really special, and we really wanted to continue that,” she said. To those ends, the choir remains open to kids of all abilities, but that’s not to say that Mimico Children’s

Choir voice instruction standards are lower than other choirs – in fact, the opposite it true, hence the need for funding to hire only the very best to direct the kids musically. “As professional musicians ourselves, we’re about the quality of the music as well as the outreach to the community,” said Bella, who has a masters degree in music and sings with the Canadian Opera Company chorus. “We want to actually give the kids a bit of a music education and an opportunity to perform at a higher level. Every year they’re getting more harmony and more ability and independence in terms of singing, so it’s really great to see them grow.” With Bella moving on career-wise, however, she said she is hoping a new charitable status for the Mimico Children’s Choir will bring in grant funding to keep the choir afloat – and enable them to pay someone to fill her shoes. In the meantime, she added, the choir is also actively seeking out local businesses and donors to sponsor the choir – either through financial support toward operation costs and bursaries for kids in need, or through in-kind donations, such as contributions to their weekly pre-rehearsal snack program and printing services. “Mainly we need funding, though – and we have a good web presence, so there’s opportunities there to give our sponsors great exposure online through our website and through all our publicity materials,” Bella said. “We’d love to hear from businesses interested in getting involved.” The choir is also seeking out potential new members. Anyone interested in learning more is invited to the choir’s introductory rehearsal on Thursday, Sept. 11 from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. at Mimico Baptist Church, 80 Hillside Ave. All are welcome to come out and participate with no obligations. For more information about the Mimico Children’s Choir, go to www.mimicochildrenschoir. com or www.facebook.com/ MimicoChildrensChoir Those interested in donating to or sponsoring the choir are asked to email mimicochildrenschoir@ gmail.com

WHERE MODERN URBAN MEETS MOTHER NATURE Photo/PETER C. MCCUSKER

Children jump for joy following the official reopening ceremony for Rotary Peace Park that included (at back, from left) Councillor Mark Grimes, Mayor Rob Ford and park committee member Patty Chippa Findlay.

New playground unveiled at Rotary Peace Park Local moms kick-started campaign five years ago CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Hundreds of playground enthusiasts both young and young-at-heart converged at the newly rejuvenated Rotary Peace Park last Wednesday night to celebrate its new playground equipment with a community barbecue and ribbon-cutting ceremony. Enhancements to the park – which was recently revitalized through a partnership among the City of Toronto, GLAD Canada, the Rotary Peace Park Rejuvenation Committee, Live Green Toronto, the Rotary Club of Etobicoke and the Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation – include new junior and senior play structures, new landscaping, lighting, pathway and drainage improvements, and new benches. Eight-year-old Sabrina Doughty, who visits the

park with her mom at least a couple of times a week, said her favourite feature of the new playground is the rope climbers. “I also like that there’s more slides and there’s better swings now,” she said. As Sabrina ran off to rejoin her friends – dozens of whom could be seen swinging, climbing, sliding on the new equipment – local grandmother Arden Lambe watched on with a smile, before heading over to enjoy the Rotary-hosted barbecue. “I think it’s marvelous. I’ve just been all around it and it’s just fantastic for old or young,” said the longtime resident, who’s lived in the area for 33 years. “It’s wonderful for me to just sit here and watch the kids and see how happy they are – everybody seems to have a smile on their face today.” Those whose faces were perhaps beaming brightest at Wednesday’s re-opening ceremony belonged to Lilette Wiens, Lisa Marucci and Patty Chippa Findlay – who, along with Lisa Christie, make up the core members of the Rotary Peace Park Rejuvenation Committee.

Formed more than five years ago with the goal of reviving their aging local park, the committee took their inspiration from Marucci’s daughter, who took the initiative to set up a fundraising lemonade stand with a friend – and in doing so raised the first $26.80 toward Rotary Peace Park’s new improvements. “We’re a group of local working moms who’ve pretty much been working towards this for about five years,” said Chippa Findlay, noting in the ensuing years, the committee has hosted everything from a skating party that raised $300, to a Monster Bash Halloween party that raised $2,500, to a pair of highly successful wine and food tasting events that raised upwards of $10,000 each. In total, Marucci said the Rotary Peace Park Committee’s contribution to the $180,000 playground project totaled about $30,000 – and it was money well spent. “Our children love it, so that’s what matters,” laughed Chippa Findlay. Swift-Tuttle comet ‘absolutely the best’ for fireballs >>>from page 1 prise geospatial at Google Canada. “Get outside. Look at the north and northeast part of the sky. You’re bound to see at least one meteor. You can see it with your bare eyes. Grab a comfortable chair.”

While generally, astronomers suggest meteor-watchers go out during the least ambient light – a couple hours before dawn – people not keen to awaken at 4 or 5 a.m. could also check out the sky at night, Evans advised. At Perseids’ peak, sky-

watchers can expect to see about 120 meteors per hour, including fireballs as bright as Jupiter or Venus, Bill Cooke with NASA’s meteoroids environment office, said in a NASA video. Cooke’s NASA team has tracked fireball activity

since 2008 with a network of meteor cameras across the U.S. A database of hundreds of events indicates Perseids is the fireball champion of meteors. “We see more fireballs from Swift-Tuttle than from any other parent comet,” Cooke said. Evans agreed. “By a mile. It is absolutely the best.” Evans spent every clear night photographing the sky before his wife, Alison, gave birth to their daughter, Hazel, almost two years ago. Now, he gets out a couple nights a month, he said. His gallery of photographic images of stars and dust, glowing gas and big spheres is prolific. National Geographic Books, Wikipedia, Skynews magazine and Sky and Telescope magazine have featured his work. His favourite image is one he shot of the Andromeda Galaxy, which includes data he shot in dark-sky cottage country, as well as in the observatory he built in his

own Leslieville backyard. “It’s a photo of something several million light years away. It tells us new stars are being born in that galaxy and at what rate. It’s two-anda-half million light years away. The light left these stars when we were not even homosapiens. “That’s pretty spectacular.” The Etobicoke native grew up in Rexdale and moved

to central Etobicoke in his teens before he attended the University of Waterloo to study geography, geomatics, geographic information science and remote sensing. Evans studies mapping, whether of the universe in his astronomy pursuits or of the Earth for his day job at Google Canada’s downtown Toronto office. “My job at Google is amazing,” Evans said, explaining he speaks with businesses and government agencies interested in leveraging Google maps. “It is one of the coolest things I have ever done. I work with a whole bunch of really intelligent people doing really cool things.” Evans said his passion for astronomy is both an intellectual interest and a humble reminder of what it means to be human in a vast universe. New store to serve 2,500 lower-income families >>>from page 1 community and also have a presence in Stonegate, too – that we can operate both locations. There are a lot of ifs with that hope, but we’re looking at it very much as an addition rather than a replacement.” Like nearly every other tenant of Stonegate Plaza – with the exception of Stonegate Community Health Centre (CHC), which has been granted permission to remain on-site at 150 Berry Rd. during its redevelopment – Stonegate Ministries was evicted in March by the property’s new

owners, Vandyk Group. Vandyk bought the 55-yearold Berry Road plaza in August with plans to redevelop the 5.3-acre site to include three condominiums buildings ranging in height from four to eight storeys, a series of townhouses and a large, two-storey commercial/retail building to accommodate a ground-floor grocery store, plus a secondstorey replacement space for Stonegate CHC. While the search for a new home proved a tricky task, Quigley said Stonegate Ministry was able to secure a location for its Outreach

“We tried very hard to find an alternate facility in or very near the Stonegate community, but there was just nothing available whatsoever,” Quigley said. “It was like looking for proverbial needle in a haystack, but we found a store on Lake Shore right opposite a group of low-rise, mid-1950s apartment buildings, just to the west of all the new highrise condos.” There, the new store will serve an estimated 2,500 lower-income families currently living in those rental accommodations along Lake Shore Boulevard West.

We tried very hard to find an alternate facility in or very near the Stonegate community but there was just nothing available whatsoever. – Graeme Quigley, chair Stonegate Ministry board

Store – which will be given a new, yet-to-be-determined name – with help from a real estate agent who volunteered his services.

While its new community is a smaller one, Quigley said that suits Stonegate Ministry just fine, as it’s still committed to serving the Stonegate community, as well. “Our priorities are, first of all, to continue to run as many programs as we can in the Stonegate community, given that we don’t have facilities there anymore,” he said, noting that since their eviction, the ministry has been using the facilities of the community health centre, as well as those at local churches who have opened their doors to them to run their programs.

Streetcars return to Queens Quay TTC streetcar service will finally return to Harbourfront in October. Over the last two years, the 509 Harbourfront route running between Union Station and the Exhibition Loop has used replacement buses while the existing streetcar corridor along Queens Quay was relocated and completely rebuilt. The 509 streetcar was supposed to have returned to service last summer, but the schedule was pushed back to July of this year, and then to the end of August. The TTC blames the delay on issues with water and sewer main replacements Waterfront Toronto was to have completed before the corridor rebuild could commence. Waterfront, in turn, said the harsh winter delayed its construction schedule. TTC, YOUTH ARTS GROUP team up The TTC has renewed a partnership with a local youth arts group to create public

The new three-year pact will see Arts for Children and Youth (AFCY) continue to create public murals depicting social themes and messages on old TTC advertising panels. Public Notice – Natural Gas Pipeline Route Update TransCanada would like to take this opportunity to update you on the status of and new developments with our King’s North Connection project in your community. TransCanada is proposing to construct, own and operate a new natural gas transmission pipeline in the communities of Vaughan, Brampton and Toronto in order to continue providing homes, businesses, schools and hospitals in Ontario and Eastern Canada with a safe and reliable source of natural gas.

Your history. Your journey. By planning your final arrangements now, you can make choices that reflect how you want to be remembered. Discover your options and record your wishes FREE with our new step-by-step Official Family Registry Estate Planner.

Get started now. Call us about your FREE Planner!

The King’s North Connection project includes a new 36” diameter transmission pipeline, approximately 12 kilometres in length that will be installed within the new right-of-way. TransCanada considered several routing alternatives during the consultation process with interested landowners and stakeholders. An initial proposed route was shared in project materials that were provided at the public Open House held on February 20, 2014 and during outreach activities. During the Open House, and as part of ongoing engagement with landowners and stakeholders, we received important feedback and further examined several alternative route options for the pipeline. Based on the feedback we have received and a thorough assessment process, we have selected a proposed route that we intend to include in our application to the National Energy Board (NEB). We anticipate submitting our application in the third quarter of 2014.

416-675-9489

TransCanada believes that the proposed route balances multiple factors that must be considered and represents the best option available for the project.

The King’s North Connection project will connect proposed new Enbridge Gas Distribution pipeline facilities with our existing natural gas transmission system. This collaborative approach will reduce the number of new natural gas pipelines required in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), benefiting consumers by providing a safe, reliable and economical source of natural gas, while minimizing the environmental footprint and impact on nearby residents and landowners.

the cases, besides the perpetrator’s means of entering homes through unsecured doors and windows. All of the offences, for example, have taken place during summer months – mainly between June and September – and the offender is most often described as wearing some kind of face covering or bandana mask over his face to obscure his identity. To anyone who finds themselves in the situation where they find an intruder in their home, Burgess advises flight over fight. “We do not endorse taking a weekend jiu jitsu course and going one-to-one with the suspect,” he said, noting that in these recent cases, the victims’ screams have proven effective in causing the intruder to flee. “What you need to do is create some time and distance between yourself and the intruder. Try to find a safe spot, like locking yourself in your bedroom or bathroom, then dial 911 right away. And always make sure you have that lifeline – a cellphone or phone – beside your bed at night.” Residents are also urged to remain vigilant of any suspicious people, and to be mindful of things being moved on their property. Any such incidents should immediately be reported to police at 416-808-2222. THE POLICE PIECE appears in The Etobicoke Guardian the first Thursday of every month. A firefighter was roped down to stay with the boy until a squad truck arrived behind the 1025 Scarlett Rd.

Classic cars roar into Etobicoke Clockwise from right: Kingsway Retirement Residence on Dundas Street was the site of a classic car show on Saturday. Residents and visitors stopped to admire cars of a different era, including this 1959 Thunderbird, which owner Arthur Griscti proves is still cool as he sits behind the wheel. This 1940 Oldsmobile is the pride and joy of George Hoskins, seen here maintaining its shine. Staff photos/IAN KELSO

Ontario Place’s urban park, waterfront trail to be open in 2016 HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com The public will have to wait a little while longer to enjoy Ontario Place. Michael Coteau, minister of tourism, culture and sport for Ontario, announced Thursday, July 31 the first phase of Ontario Place revitalization will open in the fall of 2016 with a new urban park and waterfront trail for the public.

events; a blue park, which could include space for water sports; a public recreational space; and an improved pedestrian bridge extending across Lake Shore Boulevard that links to Exhibition Place. “The vision for your new Ontario Place imagines a mix of urban, natural parks, cultural and community amenities set within the landscape across the islands,” he said. “A lot will change, but a lot will remain the same.”

“We’re pretty excited about that park, it will be a place where people can walk in... it will be an extraordinary place for people to come and spend time with their families,” Coteau said. The announcement is part of the province’s $100-million investment to reboot the popular tourist destination. “The revitalized core of Ontario Place will bring inspiration and interaction to the heart of the islands through a new hub through discovery and innovation,” Coteau said. The province did not provide a

As a part of the revitalization proposal, the original Cinesphere and pods will remain and be used as a research, learning and cultural activity hub. Coteau said they plan to continue its partnership with live music performances at the Molson Canadian Ampitheatre and is exploring the idea of a new year-round performance venue. “It’s a combination of entertainment, learning and really enjoying the beautiful waterfront we have here in Ontario, in Toronto that we really need to take advantage of more,” Coteau said.

New Great Hours. Monday: Tuesday:

Ontario Place closed its gates two years ago after 41 seasons. The closure took place because the government couldn’t afford to keep it open with a steady decline in attendance. Rumours swirled that a casino or condominiums would be put up in the wake of its closure with 28 hectares of land for developers to work with, but Coteau reaffirmed a residential development is not part of the revitalization project. And the idea of a casino has long been ruled out. He added Ontario is open to working with the private sector, individual donors, corporate sponsors and investors with a strong interest in contributing and adding value and vibrancy to Toronto’s waterfront. “It’s important for us to get the site to a place where it can be developed where corporate Ontario looks at it as a desirable place,” Coteau said. “The economic potential is quite incredible.”

Toronto rivers to be protected under the Ontario Greenbelt jean ko din jkodin@insidetoronto.com The City of Toronto is drawing up a final report to expand the Ontario Greenbelt to protect three key water systems in its backyard. City planners are looking at the Don River, Humber River and Etobicoke Creek to map out the surrounding public green spaces that will be included in the city’s proposal to Ontario’s Greenbelt Council in February. Franz Hartmann, the executive director of the Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA), said this is an exciting time for the city. “It is taking an almost final step,” he said. “The reason why this is so important is because we want Torontonians to step into their backyard and be in the Greenbelt.” The Greenbelt covers 1.8 million acres of agricultural

land and natural heritage systems in southern Ontario’s Golden Horseshoe area. The Greenbelt Act was created in 2005 by the Ontario government to protect ecological areas from urban development and sprawl. On Januar y 2013, an amendment was made to the Greenbelt Act to include a n Ur b a n R i ve r Va l l e y Designation. With this new legislation, Toronto can apply to have key water systems and green spaces be connected to the headwaters of the Oak Ridges Moraine through to Lake Ontario. But at least one group is concerned about a potential shortcoming to the expansion. “A big issue for us is getting through the Dentonia golf course and some of the other private land in between,” said Andrew McCammon, president of the Taylor Massey

Project. But Shelley Petrie, program director of the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation, said the proposed map’s discontinuity is not a major concern for the urban river valley expansion. Because municipalities own most of the green space, it does not diminish the overall goal of protection. “If the designation considered both public and private land, it will never happen,” Petrie said. “By and large, there is a collective protection of public land. This will then be an opportunity and an incentive (for private owners) to elevate the level of stewardship and care for their green space.” Toronto’s Greenbelt expansion plan will be presented as a final report to the province in February.

Trip to Australia on the line The Etobicoke Lawn Bowling club is in the midst of hosting the Canadian Junior Bowls championships with trips to not just one but two junior world championships on the line. The somewhat unusual arrangement is needed because the dates of the next two world junior championships – which are both being hosted by the Gold Coast in Australia – are close

together: this November (for the 2014 championship) and next March (for the 2015 championship). Action for Canada’s top bowlers, competing in junior and U-25 categories, kicked off on Tuesday and continues until Monday. Visit www.etobicokelawnbowling. com or www.bowlscanada.com/en/ championship/champ_u25.html

Relay rehash CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com It was a case of deja vu in Great Britain for Etobicoke sprinter Gavin Smellie. Just shy of two years after the now-28-year-old Dante Alighieri grad and his 4x100m relay teammates were denied the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics due to a lane violation disqualification, Smellie and his all-new crew were likewise rebuffed in Saturday’s relay finals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games at Glasgow’s Hampden Park Stadium. The team – consisting of Smellie running the first leg, 22-year-old Aaron Brown the second, Dontae Richards-Kwok, 25, the third, and 19-year-old Andre de Grasse the anchor leg – easily qualified for the 4x100m Commonwealth finals Friday with a time of 38.41 seconds – the second fastest qualifying time, ahead of even the Usain Bolt-anchored Jamaican team. But come Saturday’s final, despite remaining in bronzeFile photo/NICK PERRY medal contention for the first two legs (thanks to strong performances from Smellie and Brown), a botched Etobicoke’s Gavin Smellie competing baton hand-off between Richards-Kwok and anchor in Toronto in 2012 De Grasse in the last transition of the race put an end to Team Canada’s podium pursuit. They ran out of room and failed to finish the race, while Jamaica took home the gold with a time of 37.58 seconds – a new Commonwealth Game’s record – followed by the teams from England (38.02 seconds) and Trinidad and Tobago (38.10 seconds). It’s back to the drawing board for the Canadian team, which did put it together at last year’s world track and field championships in Moscow where they won the bronze medal with a nearly identical lineup of Smellie, Brown and Richards-Kwok, but rounded out by Justyn Warner. Originally from Jamaica, Smellie moved to Etobicoke’s Weston and Albion roads area with his family as a teenaged soccer star in 2001. A striker, Smellie was forced to sit out the 2003 high school soccer season when he transferred from George Harvey Collegiate Institute to BERTIN CORMIER Dante Alighieri Academy. But it was during that hiatus Friday, August 1, 2014 from soccer, his father Elisha told The Guardian in 2009, that Smellie discovered his passion for running – and never looked back. ANNE ARMSTRONG Smellie also competed in Glasgow last week in the men’s Wednesday, August 6, 2014 200-metre sprint – the lone member of Team Canada to St. Ambrose Catholic advance through both the heats and the semifinals to compete in last Thursday’s finals. With a time of 20.55 Church seconds, Smellie came in eighth in the event, well behind the podium-dominating members of the Jamaican team, PETER BARTKIW who took home gold, silver and bronze.
