ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL in ETOBICOKE: Prime Minister Stephen Harper, left, acknowledges the crowd gathered at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Rexdale on Monday evening during a campaign stop. Harper spoke about the strong ties the Conservative government has made with India and the war on terrorism. Harper then made a stop Tuesday morning in Etobicoke Centre, promising if re-elected his party would make changes to the Criminal Code and pass its “Life Means Life” legislation, which proposes to imprison for the rest of their natural lives offenders convicted of the “most heinous murders” and high treason.

Ukrainian Independence Day marked amid continued military conflict overseas Annual event at Centennial Park includes stage show recalling country’s first freedom fighters 100 years ago CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com With tensions still mounting in Ukraine, this weekend’s annual festivities to commemorate the 24th anniversary of that country’s independence here in Etobicoke will once again likely prove a meaningful, yet slightly more muted affair than in years past. Hosted by the Toronto branch of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC), the Ukrainian Independence Day festival will take place on Saturday, Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Etobicoke’s Centennial Park. “We feel we need to continue the event to commemorate what it originally stood for, which was the independence of Ukraine,” said UCC spokesperson Nadia Prokopiw of the festival, which saw its name changed from Flavours of Ukraine last year out of respect for the gravity of the situation in Ukraine. “It hasn’t been in the news as much, but the Russian army, Putin’s forces are still in Ukraine trying to capture territory and whatever it is he’s after...So it’s hard to call (the festival) a celebration given what’s going on, but we still want to commemorate the day.” To those ends, this year’s Ukrainian Independence Day festival will once again feature a poignant stage show called Freedom Fighters – Then and Now: From Sich to ATO (Anti-Terrorist Operation), featuring Ukrainian folk dancing ensembles and vocalists. A tribute to the 100th Anniversary of the Sich Rifles – the first and only Ukrainian military unit in the Austro-Hungarian Empire fighting against Russia during the First World War – Prokopiw said the Freedom Fighters stage show is an especially moving one this year. “The Sich Rifles were a battalion of Ukrainian soldiers and

volunteers, and the purpose of why they established 100 years ago was because, again, they were fighting for freedom, and Russia, again, was trying to take over territory,” she said. “A hundred years ago we had youth dying in war – that was the case then and now it’s happening again. We’ve got young men organizing volunteer (ATO) battalions to go to the front and try to help stop the Russians from stepping on our territory.” In addition to the Freedom Fighters stage show, attendees at this year’s annual Ukrainian

Independence Day festival can also expect the usual line-up of family-friendly friendly activities in celebration of Ukrainian culture and food, including: n entertainment courtesy of two live bands on the mainstage n a Zabava dance party from 7 to 11 p.m. n the Flavours of Ukraine food fair, featuring plenty of perogies, meat-on-a-stick, cabbage rolls and kobassa n a children’s playground, with inflatable rides and a crafts area n the Marketplace packed with clothing, handicrafts, gifts and

food n beer gardens n soccer, volleyball, and chess tournaments n and the Ukrainian Idol finale “Toronto is such a great city because it’s so multicultural and everybody gets to share and explore and learn about other people’s cultures. This festival continues that theme,” Prokopiw said, noting that admission to the Ukrainian Independence Day festival – including parking – is free.

OPI invites the public to first-ever corn roast at Franklin Horner CC

Hot off its successful Butterfly Festival earlier this summer, Our Place Initiative (OPI) is now inviting residents to its first annual Etobicoke Corn Roast Saturday, Aug. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Franklin Horner Community Centre, 42 Horner Ave. “We are thrilled to be hosting this event,” said Murray Foster, OPI’s field director. “We’ve put on a number of events this year, including the Etobicoke Butterfly Festival, a few park clean-ups, and an Etobicoke transit petition that we’ve collected almost 500 signatures for. All of them have been very successful in bringing out the Etobicoke community, and we expect this corn roast will be no different.” OPI’s inaugural Corn Roast, which will go rain or shine, promises fun for the whole family, including free barbecued cornon-the-cob with all the ‘fixings’, a special Lob-the-Cob contest (#LobTheCobOPI), live entertainment, kids’ activities such as face painting and raffle prizes. Founded in 2012, Our Place Initiative (OPI) is a grassroots organization that seeks to increase civic engagement in Etobicoke through community events aimed at getting local residents to come out, meet their neighbours and improve the quality of life in the neigbourhood. For more information about OPI or its upcoming Etobicoke Corn Roast event, go to www.ourplaceinitiative. com or email murray@ourplaceinitiative.com or follow the group on Twitter at @OurPlaceON

The Ex: marking a special time of year for Toronto families

Write us

T

oronto summers have an ebb and flow to them marked by different events and traditions which define the season, but with the opening of the Canadian National Exhibition comes the clearest sign of all: the end of summer is approaching. It’s part of life in the city and of being a Torontonian, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. The 137th annual version of The Ex opens Friday and continues until Labour Day on Monday, Sept. 7. The fair itself has its own traditions, including lots of wacky food creations, concerts, displays, theme days and the Canadian International Air Show to wrap it all up on the Labour Day weekend. Toronto families carefully pick the days they will attend based on events they want to see, and those traditions are handed down the generations. You our view through can pretty much bet that if your parents made a point of going to A Toronto The Ex on the air show weekend because that’s what they wanted tradition to see, you will now be taking your own kids, or maybe even returns grandkids, to also see the air show. Others make attending on Warriors Day or for the Labour Day parade a part of their family traditions. Respecting those traditions has been one of the reasons the CNE continues to be so successful and holds a special place in the hearts of Torontonians. The Ex, though, is not bound by tradition as it is also the place to see the newest innovations and products. The CNE also makes sure it offers new events and experiences every year, and this year one of them is the Craft Beer Fest which takes place for the first time this summer. Though often referred to as bittersweet for kids who start counting the days until school starts again, the CNE is far from the only thing going on in Toronto over the remaining days of summer. Just a quick look around shows us this weekend has the Scarborough Afro-Carib Fest at Albert Campbell Square, the Tirgan Iranian Festival at Harbourfront, Ukrainian Independence Day at Centennial Park in Etobicoke, and the Tommy Thompson Park Butterfly Festival in the Beach to name but a few. As always, if you’re looking for things to do in the city, visit us at insidetoronto.com/toronto-events

Transit isn’t the only issue on minds of Toronto voters in federal election

T

here’s a federal election coming up on the distant horizon. For now, the talk on Toronto airwaves is about criminal justice, cheques, and other matters related to the Mike Duffy trial. At some point in the long weeks leading up to Oct. 19, one hopes that talk will centre closer to Toronto and our needs. Earlier in the summer, Mayor John Tory held meetings with representatives of the Liberals and New Democrats, and earlier in the year spent time making Toronto’s case to the federal Conservatives. As he pointed out then, things were looking pretty good for Toronto: two of three parties were committed to funding his Smart Track transit plan, and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau appears to be waiting for

david nickle the city the right time to say so. So really – for Toronto, there is no downside. Well, that would be the case if transit weren’t the only story. Toronto has other needs that only the federal government can properly meet. We could use help with our crumbling stock of affordable housing. We could do with a federally funded national child care program. And back at transit – once we get finished building a Scarborough subway along about the same route as the Smart Track plan, we’re going to need money for the downtown relief line that everyone agrees is the really crucial transit improve-

ment. These all should be, at some point, deal-breaking or – making policies in making a rational choice for our next prime minister. As matters are unfolding, however, a rational, Torontocentric choice is not what will be on most Toronto voters’ minds. If voters were taking simple enlightened selfinterest into account, then the child benefit cheques that the federal Conservatives sent out just before the writ was dropped should have had some impact on polling for them. While it’s early days in this very long election, it’s a safe bet that voting Torontonians will be dividing along lines more familiar from the past couple of elections: Harper Nation, if you will, and the remainder of the city looking to turf

the bum out. That divide was in evidence when Harper stopped by Etobicoke (ground zero for that other Nation) in the company of an angry, foul-mouthed man who swore at reporters and suggested they all cheated on their taxes. From another part of the city, I and other Torontonians watched the display with a horrified recognition. Many elections ago, former Prime Minister Kim Campbell made the point that elections were no time to discuss issues. Those things get sorted out afterwards, when we’ve all gotten the bile out of our systems. David Nickle is The Guardian’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Forty years later, Montgomery’s Inn still depends on its volunteers Landmark community museum hosts its 40th anniversary celebration with Heritage Fair and Corn Roast on Thursday, Sept. 10

CYNTHIA REASON creason@Insidetoronto.com Next month’s annual Heritage Fair and Corn Roast at Montgomery’s Inn will be a celebration four decades in the making – both marking the historic Etobicoke landmark’s 40th year as a community museum and celebrating the volunteers who made that momentous occasion possible. “What’s remarkable is people’s passion about this place – how it can make them come together and want to give their time. It’s just really amazing,” said Catherine Campbell, Montgomery’s Inn’s program officer, of the museum’s volunteers. “We’re always amazed by the people who come and volunteer their time every single week...I think it’s really great to have this opportunity that we can recognize that spirit and that commitment in a very public way.” To those ends, the anniversary event – which will run from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 4709 Dundas St. W. – will celebrate Montgomery’s Inn’s current slate of 144 volunteers, as well as the countless others who have dedicated their time to the inn over the last 40 years since it was first established as a “living museum” on March 1, 1975. The event will feature a full menu of great food – including hot buttered corn on the cob, hot dogs, wood-oven pizza, ice cream, baked goods, and a special anniversary cake – as well as a memorabilia table, activities and games for kids, tours of the Robert A. Given Library, Irish Country Dance lessons, and live musical entertainment by Gin Lane. There will even be a special behind-the-bar appearance from the inn’s original innkeeper, Thomas Montgomery, who will be serving up a special 40th anniversary brew custom-made for the occasion by Great Lakes Brewery. According to a brief history of Montgomery’s Inn written by the Etobicoke Historical Society’s heritage officer, Denise Harris, Montgomery – an Irish immigrant – built his now-famous inn back in

We’re always amazed by the people who come and volunteer their time every single week...I think it’s really great to have this opportunity that we can recognize that spirit and that commitment in a very public way – Catherine Campbell, program officer Montgomery’s Inn

Montgomery’s Inn as it’s known today would not have been the public museum and community gathering space had it not been for a dedicated group of history lovers and volunteers who fought to keep the historic house from being demolished. 1830 on 200 acres of land he an his wife, Margaret, leased in order to operate their farm. The Inn itself, she wrote, was “not a regular stage coach stop, but was used by travellers and farmers from the west and northwest with grain on way to grist mills on the Humber River, or travelling to York on business.” After Margaret died in 1855, Montgomer y closed the inn the following year; and upon Montgomery’s own death in 1877, his and Margaret’s sole surviving son William inherited the inn. He, in turn, then passed it down to his son Robert. Montgomery’s Inn passed hands

several times after that – it was sold in 1946 to Kingsway Presbyterian Church, which in 1961 sold the building and its property to Louis Mayzell, a developer keen to tear it down to pave the way for a strip mall at the intersection of Islington Avenue and Dundas Street West. Instead, Harris’ forbearers at the Etobicoke Historical Society stepped in and managed to convince Mayzell to save the inn as an historic site – enlisting him as a lifetime member of the society in the process. Within a year, the volunteer members of the society managed to raise $15,000 to purchase and save Montgomery’s Inn – but they

were $40,000 short. “However, five members – including Mayzell himself – personally and bravely guaranteed the mortgage at a local bank, and the sale went through,” Harris wrote, noting that there was still no money to renovate the inn and finances remained tight. “Finally, in 1965, the township agreed to buy the inn from EHS...And in 1975, it opened as ‘Etobicoke’s Museum’ and restored to the 1850 period. Now it’s a museum owned and operated by the City of Toronto and a lively part of the local community.” Today, Montgomery’s Inn’s slate of devoted volunteers continue that

tradition of tireless dedication to their “living museum” – be it the human chain they encircled the inn with back in 2011 when the inn was under threat of closure; or the countless hours members of the INNovators (a citizen-led organization dedicated to ensuring that Montgomery’s Inn continues as a gathering place in the community) dedicate to their baked bread fundraising; or those volunteers who donate their time week after week to help run the inn’s multitude of community educational programs. “We like to use (an interactive) model of making meaning in our community – and our volunteers play a big role in that,” Campbell said of Montgomery’s Inn’s programming, which often enlists heritage costume-clad actors and volunteers, who bring to life the stories of those travellers who once passed through the inn’s doors over the years. “We really are dedicated to preserving our history and connecting people with our history, but also to seeing what’s relevant in the community and what the needs of people might be – whether it’s our weekly, year-round farmers’ market, or people being able to come here to learn how to make bread, or servicing our Mabelle community – just being a place where people can come and feel a sense of home in a very large city.” For more information about Montgomery’s Inn or the Sept. 10th 40th Anniversary Corn Roast and Heritage Fair, go to www.montgomerysinn. com

>>>from page 1 four other residents wanted to reinstate the association to shape and inform local development. “So we could be a little more vigilant and have a voice,” Franceschetti said of the decision in a recent interview. “We don’t want to stop any development. We just want to be in the loop, in the know. If people have any concerns, we want to get viable answers.” The two-decade Richmond Gardens’ resident said three community concerns informed the decision to reinstate the central Etobicoke neighbourhood association. “We have three concerns: the Eglinton LRT, which most we’ve spoken to oppose; the potential residential development along the Eglinton corridor and the future of the Silver Creek Preschool programs and building. The Toronto District School Board owns it and is in discussion about its sale.” While the Eglinton Crosstown LRT is no longer planned to be built west of Mount Dennis into Etobicoke, Mayor John Tory’s SmartTrack is. But there’s a glaring problem, Franceschetti said. Tory’s SmartTrack plan proposes to build a new heavy-rail “surface subway” alongside Eglinton Avenue West in central Etobicoke through to

Mississauga. But that right-of-way no longer exists. For decades, the northern edge of Eglinton Avenue West between the Humber River and Hwy. 427 had been a deep green boulevard, originally created to accommodate the never-built Richview Expressway. But former mayor Rob Ford’s council declared the land surplus. Build Toronto is now selling it off. Build Toronto is the city’s real estate corporation, which sells its surplus and underutilized real estate assets. Franceschetti said he sees future development along Eglinton lingering on the horizon. “We’re looking at potential for Eglinton corridor changes with property owned by Build Toronto,” he said. “National Homes is building freehold townhouses on the northeast corner of Kipling and Eglinton. Word is out that Pantalone Realty just bought Richview Square Plaza.” Pantalone Realty did not respond to The Guardian’s calls for comment. Richview Square Plaza on Eglinton at Wincott Drive boasts boutiques, a bakery and deli, a bank, a jeweler, a drug store, a florist, a veterinary hospital, a Beer Store and medical offices, among others.

Silver Creek Centre for Early Learning and Development specializes in serving children with physical and developmental disabilities. A Toronto District School Board spokesperson confirmed Silver Creek is on a board list of 20 decommissioned former school sites currently owned by Toronto Lands Corporation, the board’s real estate arm. The board approved its staff to begin community consultations this fall and next spring on the future of those decommissioned sites. Prior to community consultations, board staff will meet with city planning and community agencies to consider other uses for the buildings. Community consultation on the future of Silver Creek will be held this fall. A date has yet to be set. Currently, the Richmond Gardens’ association executive is focused on one goal: growing its membership in anticipation of an annual general meeting to be held sometime this fall. At present, the association boasts about 50 members. Franceschetti and his executive would like to see more residents join. “We’d like to push for at least 100 members by Aug. 31,” he said.

Pastor wants ‘bloodsuckers’ connected to Lecent Ross’s death brought to justice Al Bowen puts challenge to the mayor; says many of the city’s gun deaths happens in housing projects TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The pastor of Lecent Ross’ grieving mother said Friday he wants the “bloodsuckers” responsible for placing the illegal, semi-automatic handgun in a Jamestown home that killed the 14-year-old “nailed.” Pa s t o r A l B ow e n o f Abundant Life Assembly made the comments in an interview with The Guardian following a Toronto police news conference Friday morning. During the news conference, police announced a 13-year-old boy has been charged with manslaughter, and an 18-year-old man charged with criminal negligence causing death, in Lecent’s death. Both young men are also charged with numerous gun offences. “It’s necessary,” Bowen said of the charges against the two, unnamed young men Supt. Ron Taverner spoke to at the news conference. “When we want 100 per cent, sometimes we get 15 per cent.” That 100 per cent, Bowen explained, is identifying and charging the owner of the .40-calibre Smith & Wesson handgun police seized at the Jamestown townhouse where Lecent was shot. “I want to know who put that gun in the hands of the people who took it into that house,” Bowen said, his voice rising with anger. “I want them nailed. I want the people who sold the gun nailed. “ These bloodsuckers are getting $10,000 a gun. I want them strung up. I say that figuratively. I’m a man of peace.” Lecent was killed July 9 while at the Jamestown Crescent home of a friend. Several young people and a parent were in the home at the time. Bowen further called on Mayor John Tory to speak out strongly and publicly against the city’s gun violence. “I want our mayor to do a campaign to get guns off the street,” Bowen said. “We’ve had Vivi Lemonis, Jane Creba, now the young woman (Ariela

Navarro-Fenoy) killed down at (Muzik nightclub). Yet so many of these murders happen in housing project areas.” Georgina (Vivi) Lemonis was killed April 5, 1994 after being hit by a bullet from a sawed-off shotgun when armed men tried to rob patrons in the Just Desserts cafe in mid-town Toronto. Fifteen-year-old Jane Creba was shopping with family on Toronto’s busy Yonge Street on Boxing Day 2005 when she was caught in the crossfire of a shootout between rival gangs. Bowen then referenced Donald Beckles. The 46-year-old stay-athome father of two was shot multiple times in March while having a cigarette on the porch of his Jamestown Crescent home. Police have not made an arrest in Beckles’ murder. Lecent is the third Jamestown Crescent resident to be shot and killed inside or outside their home or that of a friend in the past two years. Lecent’s family also made

Above, Alicia Jesquith made a plea to the public during a media conference on Aug. 14, for a stop to gun violence. The event took place after an earlier announcement of two arrests in the case of her daughter Lecent Ross’ killing July 9 with an illegal, semiautomatic, 40-calibre handgun. Left, two people have been arrested and charged in the shooting death of 14-year-old Lecent Ross.

pleas to the public at the news conference held at 23 Division station in north Etobicoke. “Parents should be held accountable for their kids’ actions,” an emotional Alicia Jesquith, Lecent’s mother, told reporters. “Please stop the violence. Our children are being lost to guns.” Lecent’s father said he did not know the teens charged. But he had a message for area youth. “Young kids in the community gotta realize running around with a gun – older kids give them the gun – doesn’t lead to good decisions,” Charles Ross said. His brother, Troy Ross, thanked police, and the community for its well wishes and support. He urged anyone with information about Lecent’s death to come forward to police. “It has been tough for my family: for my brother, his girlfriend, Lecent’s mother, and especially, her sister...It has brought us closer together. “(Charges) have made it a little bit easier on us. Lecent has been put to rest.”

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com The man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant in connection with a December 2014 shooting outside the House of Lancaster has turned himself into police at 22 Division. Mohamud Yousef Omar, 24, surrendered to officers at 6 p.m. on Tuesday – just hours after 22 Division Supt. Shaun Narine announced the warrant for his arrest on eight

charges, including attempted murder and various firearms offences. During Tuesday morning’s media briefing at police headquarters, Narine named Omar as “the shooter and the wanted party” in connection with an altercation outside the House of Lancaster, which left a man in his early 20s with “critical” brain injuries after he was shot in the head. He was scheduled to appear in court yesterday.

“I recommend keepIng thIngs local and focused for success” I have been working with the Etobicoke Guardian over the past few years and I have noticed positive results. Though I’ve tried bigger city newspapers, my greatest response has been from my listings with the Guardian. The pricing is very affordable for the results and I’ve been accommodated with timing on many occasions. People love this community, so local postings help them find exactly what they’re looking for. I have recommended the Etobicoke Guardian to colleagues and will continue to do so. Thank you! Regards, Roy Meleca, Sales Representative Royal LePage Your Community Realty, Brokerage

TTCriders seeks members to fight rising transit fares Advocacy group seeks ‘route captains’ to solicit support RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com TTCriders wants to start a revolution. The city’s largest transit advocacy group is recruiting volunteers to act as “route captains” to engage transit users at bus stops and subway stations, advocate for local service improvements, and lobby city councillors to speak out in favour of better TTC funding. According to group spokesperson Suhail Barot, the recruitment drive is meant to give voice to a mass of transit

riders, particularly with transportation a key issue in the October federal election, and a TTC fare hike all but sure for next year. “1.8 million people take transit in Toronto every day,” said Barot during an interview last week. “If we can get them engaged we can really build a movement.” The group is planning a day of action on Monday, Sept. 13 and will canvas approximately 50 transit locations on the importance of better funding for the perpetually cash-strapped TTC, which has reported a preliminary operating budget shortfall of nearly $100 million for next year in the wake of announcements to improve and restore service to pre-2011 levels. TTCriders has made a name for itself of late with agitprop protests and social media shaming of political figures through awareness campaigns such as #TTCsardines, which has captured the level of disenchantment by transit users. Even elected officials are frequently

TTCriders and supporters rally against higher TTC fares at city hall in January 2014. The group is currently recruiting new members to continue its fight against transit fare increases.

spouting the group’s catchphrases and slogans. That politicians are eager to

co-opt TTCriders’ message is a sign they understand the importance of public transit for a city like Toronto,

Barot said. “They seem to be getting the message of the importance of better transit. And if they don’t do anything else we will hold them accountable,” he said. Barot said the group will also continue to target the provincial government for failing to provide adequate operational funds for the TTC, which relies overwhelmingly on fare box revenue and city subsidy to meet its budget needs. “We’ve worked to get the province to fund the TTC’s operations which they stopped doing over 15 years ago,” he said. “You need funding to expand the system and lower fares. Funding comes from the city and it could come from the province and the federal government as well. You can’t make the system better unless the resources are available.”

Sir John A. Macdonald has name carved in stone outside Union Station The plaza outside Union Station has been officially renamed after Canada’s first prime minister. At a ceremony held Tuesday, the newly renovated space was officially christened Sir John A. Macdonald Plaza and a plaque erected in honour of the man most credited with building the Canadian Pacific Railway. But the designation doesn’t come without some controversy given Macdonald’s role in instituting a “head tax” on Chinese migrants and his policies on First Nations people during his near-20 years as prime minister. The move itself represents a diminished plan to honour Macdonald after a city survey found many were opposed to naming the entire station after him. FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED wANNOUNCEMENTS

Until the end of the year the TTC will test the effectiveness of pre-boarding announcements intended to assist visu-

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT ally impaired riders. The pilot project will take place on a handful of buses on the 11 Bayview and 7 Bathurst routes. When the bus approaches a stop, as the front doors open, an external speaker will broadcast what route it serves and where it’s headed. CLOSURES RESUME as games end wROAD

The Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games are over and city construction projects which were suspended are now set to resume resulting in more road closures. The work includes repairs on the Gardiner Expressway, which were scheduled to get underway as of Wednesday, Aug. 19, between Strachan Avenue and Bathurst Street and will require a reduction of one lane in each direction.

Check out www.toronto. ca/inview for a full list of projects. STREETS FORUM set FOR OCT. 1 wCOMPLETE

You can now register for this year’s edition of the Complete Streets Forum. Organized by the Toronto Centre of the Active Transportation (TCAT), the event is dedicated to the idea of making streets open to use by all – pedestrians, bicycles, public transit and automobiles. It is taking place Thursday, Oct. 1, at Hart House at the University of Toronto and will feature input from local and international transportation professionals and advocates for complete streets. Early bird pricing for the full-day forum is available until Sept. 11. Visit www.tcat.ca for more. Rahul Gupta is The Guardian’s transit reporter. His column runs every Thursday. Michael Craig questions Grimes’ brochure invoices >>>from page 1 more than $100,000 on his re-election bid. The request for a compliance audit comes from Michael Craig, also the author of a complaint against Grimes to the city’s Integrity Commissioner, when he objected to Grimes’ appearance in several promotional videos for local condominium projects. In his request, Craig alleges that Grimes’ claims for $7,293.51 in brochure expenses were improperly supported, as he only submitted $3,222 in invoices. Craig believes the expenses submitted are “sig-

nificantly under market value” and speculates that the ones without invoices might also be undervalued. Under election rules, if a vendor offers a candidate a deal on rent or other services, that must be counted as a campaign contribution. Craig also cited several additional brochures that weren’t represented in invoices. In total, he alleges that a total of $25,917 in brochure expenses weren’t reported. Craig also said that there were no distribution costs listed for Grimes’ literature. The complainant accuses Grimes of not reporting

$39,800 in online video production expenses. And he alleges that expenses listed for robo calls from Mayor John

Tory endorsing Grimes – $113 – is likely under-stated. “I have no confidence that the receipt enclosed with Grimes’ financial statements reflects the true market value or the amount of service received, and I believe it is under market value,” he writes. Craig also points to an automobile / truck advertising push toward the end of the campaign that wasn’t reflected in Grimes’ declared expenses. And he expressed skepticism that all of Grimes’ campaign work was done by volunteers, noting that former mayoral staff-member Sheila Paxton

and sitting Ward 5 Councillor James Maloney both had prominent positions in the campaign. Grimes was contacted for this article through his office, both in person and over the phone, but had not responded as of The Guardian’s Wednesday deadline. He and Craig will both have an opportunity to defend their positions in front of the Compliance Audit Committee Aug. 25. The committee will decide there whether to send the request for a full independent compliance audit, and then, depending on the findings,

STILL GOT GAME: Etobicoke’s Islington Golf Club chipped in to help the Canadian Seniors’ Golf Association host its 93rd annual national golf championship along with the Mississauga-based Toronto Golf Club. About 300 competitors competed in the threeround event which ran Monday to Wednesday. From Monday’s action, left to right: teeing it up is David Ferguson while Robert Jackson admires his opening drive off the first tee. Meanwhile, on the putting greens Peter Smith checks his line while Chris Kelos keeps an eye on his putt.

Both Royal York Cardinals teams made it to last weekend’s Toronto Baseball Association (TBA) championship final in the midget AA division with the older 1997 birth year team prevailing over the younger 1998 birth year team in a close 8-7 game, pushing through the winning run in their last at bats. Championship format was eight-team, double-knockout. Both advance to the provincial championships Aug. 28-30 in Brantford. The younger team is actu-

ally the defending provincial champs in minor midget AA. Local teams actually won five of the six TBA championships contested last weekend, including: midget A (Martingrove); peewee AAA (Etobicoke); peewee AA (Royal York); and peewee A (Royal York). The remaining TBA divisions hold their championships this weekend. For more information on the TBA, visit www.torontobaseball.ca.

GREAT FINAL ROUND: Golf whiz Connor Munro recently earned silver in the Canadian Optimist Junior Golf National Championship held last week in London, Ont. with this best performance to date. Connor played against youth ages 12-13 from across Canada and the United States who had to play in a previous qualifier to gain entry. Connor played strong all three days posting the low round scores for two of the three days, including the final round. His top-three finish gives Connor an exemption to play in next year’s Nationals.

TOUGH LOSS: This Etobicoke Rangers player snags a fly ball during Toronto Baseball Association minor peewee action at Bond Park on Sunday. The Rangers went on to lose a close one, 10-7 to North York.
