Etobicoke’s first baby of 2015 arrived 11 days early. Born on Jan. 1 at 12:43 a.m. at Etobicoke General Hospital (EGH), the healthy five-pound, six-ounce baby girl joins mom Rupinderjit Kaur Bath, dad Jasvir Singh Bath and four-year-old brother Gursimrat Singh Bath in rounding out the Etobicoke family of four. “We were surprised,” said mom Rupinderjit, whose original due date was Jan. 11. She spoke with The Guardian from her hospital room Friday, Jan. 2, shortly before being discharged. Rupinderjit said she was at home watching TV with her family on New Year’s Eve when her contractions began at around 11 p.m. “It was very quick. My water was broken and we came to the hospital,” she said, noting that less than two hours later, her daughter was born.

Following Sikh tradition, the baby had not yet been named. According to Bachan Singh of the Sikh Spiritual Centre in Rexdale, the Sikh temple the Bath family attends, the name of the baby will be derived from the Sikh Holy Book, Guru Granth Sahib. “From the Sikh Holy Book that is Guru Granth Sahib, we read one holy hymn, and the first word of that hymn, from that letter we choose the name. This is the process,” he explained. Rupinderjit said she and her family were hoping to make the trip into the Sikh Spiritual Centre on the weekend to name their newborn daughter. Until then, she said her only hope for her second child is that she be happy and healthy. “I wish she will be successful in her life,” she said. Can you help relieve gridlock?

Write us

T

hings are beginning to happen in this city to relieve traffic congestion. Short-term, the TTC has a host of projects on the way to assist in that (see our list online at bit.ly/1vZ2zyN). A longterm strategy is just as critical, but also important is getting everyone in this city to do their own part. Businesses in this city fuel the very need for commuting. Deliveries need to be made. People run errands, grab coffees and many use their cars to do so. But where these efforts plug up our roadways, people need to think differently about how they or their business impacts traffic. How can they change what they’re doing and be a part of the solution, rather than the problem? On Monday, Toronto police and the city’s parking enforcement began their blitz on illegally parked cars in the city’s core. Any vehicle caught causing our view congestion because they were in a live lane was tickWe all need to stopped eted or towed. Though the law isn’t new, be part of the Mayor John Tory made the rigtraffic solution orous enforcement part of his six-point plan to reduce traffic congestion in early 2015. Commercial delivery and courier companies are a necessity for businesses downtown. But unless they want to foot expensive towing bills, they’re going to have to find new ways to operate to avoid jamming up the streets during rush hour. The strength of our economy is directly impacted by traffic in the city, so business leaders have a vested interest in getting people and goods moving. The loss of $6 billion in productivity each year is projected to grow to $15 billion by 2031. Businesses need to think outside the box to change their impact: perhaps consider flex time, satellite offices or allow staff to work from home. Tory’s suggested fewer events be hosted downtown and making sure marathons and charity walks aren’t monopolizing major roadways. Residents should ask how they can change their own commuter routines so they are more considerate of other drivers. And the city should measure the outcome of this enforcement campaign and apply that success to other commercial neighbourhoods in need of relief. A sustainable, long-term transit strategy may be driven by the city but cannot happen without everyone making their own contributions to the cause.

Our ‘hurry up and wait’ culture My, did Toronto councillors and the mayor get off to a running start this week. Mayor John Tory and councillors looked at all sorts of ways to speed cars and trucks on their way with traffic management as police got busy towing illegally stopped vehicles during rush hour. The Public Works and Infrastructure Committee wasted no time putting staff to work studying whether or not to contract out garbage collection. Tory was so excited to get going that he nearly fell over on an icy Toronto sidewalk. And that was just by Tuesday. In all this hustle-and-bustle, it was good to be reminded that not everything in Toronto is an around-the-clock project, and there are still some parts of the city where people know how to slow down and smell the roses. And where better to do that than in Nathan Phillips Square. On Monday, the city’s Government Management

david nickle the city Committee kicked off the term hearing from the team that’s managing the nine-year, $60-million project to spruce up the square outside Toronto City Hall. The project got its start under the David Miller administration in 2007, with a design by PLANT Architect and a budget of $40 million. The cost of that project has ballooned to about $60 million, with elements added and removed through the years as political whims shifted. This week staff recommended adding back many of the elements of that revitalization that had been removed – which would add $11 million to the project. If everything is added back the $70-million project to improve Toronto’s civic square will be finished in 2016. If a concurrent repair of the ceremonial ramp going to the

roof of City Hall is included, that will be 2019. If the city can find a restaurateur with $4 million to spend on building a restaurant there, we’ll have one of those, too. Until then, Nathan Phillips Square will be some flavour of the way it is now: partially open, dotted with hoardings, kind of arid: all for a project that was intended to marginally improve the political and cultural centre of our city. It’s this example – along with the decades-long rehabilitation of the Gardiner Expressway and the continuing mirage of subways in Scarborough – that reveals Toronto’s true political cult heritage, and against which the new hurry-up culture of the Tory administration finds itself. Council can hurry up as much as it wants now. Before too long, we all get down to the regular business, of waiting.

Thefts from skating trail ruin fun To the editor: In South Etobicoke we have the wonderful Sam Smith Skating Trail that is used by children, teenagers, adults and seniors alike. It is a fabulous facility in a beautiful setting. However, my friend recently had her backpack and hiking boots stolen while she was skating, and now I see signs in the change room stating “Thefts Have Been Reported.” For the few who are ruining the fun for everyone, shame on you. And if you notice your child/ teen/friend bringing home new “found” items from the skating trail, try asking a few questions about how they were acquired. They may not have been in the lost and found. P. Upton

Fundraising campaign launched to help cover costs >>>from page 1 while the names of those authors have not yet been revealed, Enid Wray, assistant curriculum leader for ESA’s library and technology integration department, has launched the Name the Author contest to help drum up interest in the festival amongst the ESA student body. Details of the contest – including photos of all 12 visiting authors – are online at http://bit.ly/1tFR1AL The names of the authors will be announced Monday, Jan. 12 when the contest closes, but Wray said students can rest assured that all 12 are sure to impress. “At least half of the authors have won or been nominated for major Canadian literary awards,” she said. “They are all popular and contemporary, and many of them, within the scope of the last couple of years, have been part of the Ontario Library Association’s Forest of Reading Program.”

Photo/Peter C. MCCusker

Etobicoke School of the Arts student Rebecca Parry is involved with the upcoming Festival of Authors that will have 12 authors conducting writing workshops at the school.

During the festival, ESA’s Grade 9 and 10 students will be treated to 50-minute sessions with a range

of young adult (YA) fiction writers, while students in grades 11 and 12 will get extended, 100-minute work-

shops with adult fiction authors, Wray said. “What they’re going to be doing is, in the junior classes, it’ll mostly be a matter of the author will do a short reading from one of their current books and then talk a little bit about why they write, then do a Q&A with the kids,” she said. “In the senior classes, there will be some readings, too, but there will be more time for them to explore motivation and where the writing comes from and the writing process. It’ll be a lot of interactive Q&A, but it will also dig more deeply into the craft of writing and also the perils of publishing. Some of our students do write and want to be writers, so they’ll learn what it’s like to try to survive as an author in the Canadian literary market.” In order to help fund ESA’s inaugural Canadian Festival of Authors – which, at $5,700, is eating up a third of the library budget for the year

– Wray has launched a fundraising campaign she hopes will raise $3,500 toward the cost of bringing in the authors for this “exciting week”. In the end, Wray said she’s confident the festival experience will mark a “high note” of the school year at ESA. “Whenever an author comes in and works with the kids, everybody always leaves on such a high note. The authors are captivating. You can read a book, but when you listen to the author read the book, it’s just transporting you to a whole different world,” she said. “We, as teachers, can teach novels and we can say ‘this is what’s happening and this is what’s going on’, but actually talking to the author and knowing what was in their head when they wrote that character or that scene, it’s a whole new experience.”

Cancer screening saves lives: CCO

Cancer Care Ontario appealing to patients and doctors to schedule in tests; early detection greatly increases chances of survival TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Suchitra Chahal is a cancer screening success story that Etobicoke’s regional cancer program would like to see in greater numbers. After her son’s birth in 1988, her doctor diagnosed her with fibrosystic disease of the breast, and surgically removed a “lemon-sized” lump from her left breast. He removed another lump from the same breast two years later. “I was just shocked. Then, the second time, I got scared again,” recalled Chahal, 55. Chahal now regularly receives mammograms at the Betty Wallace Women’s Health Centre at Trillium’s Queensway Hospital. The centre was intentionally designed a decade ago with bright, natural light and privacy considerations to be a singular stop for mammography, breast ultrasound, bone density testing and surgical consultations. “I love coming here,” Chahal said recently. “It’s beautiful; very efficient. The staff are very kind and courteous. They make you feel relaxed. If you’re new, staff put you at ease. They all know me.” Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) recommends Ontario women aged 50 to 74 who are not considered at high risk of breast cancer get a mammogram every two years. The Mississauga Halton/ Central West Regional Cancer program is undertaking a “push-pull strategy” to increase its breast cancer and cervical cancer screening

uptake rates among patients, reported Dr. Craig McFadyen, Mississauga Halton/Central West regional vice-president of Cancer Care Ontario. “We appeal to patients directly as much as possible,” he said, referencing a multimedia screening campaign last spring, as well as outreaches at immigration centres and workplaces. “We also go directly to doctors to help them become better at talking with patients about the value of screening.” Cervical cancer is almost entirely preventable with regular screening, as well as the HPV (human papillomavirus) immunization, CCO reported. Relatively new Ontario guidelines recommend women aged 21 to 69 who are or ever have been sexually active get a pap test every three years. A pap test is the sole screening tool for the presence of cervical cancer or pre-cancerous cells. “Almost without exception, women in North America who die of cervical cancer are not engaged in a screening program,” McFadyen said. “It wasn’t that long ago that cervical cancer was a major cause of death of women in Canada. “But the amount of mortality it causes in Canada today is far, far less than it was, and that’s because screening programs started in the 1980s.” Yet, doctors can face challenges getting patients to agree to a regular pap test. Modesty, lack of experience with pap tests, language, cultural and access barriers regularly confronted Dr.

Mammographer Barb Morant sets up a patient for a mammogram at the Betty Wallace Women’s Health Centre at Trillium Queensway Hospital.

Connie Chen in her family medicine practices in largely multicultural communities for the past 20 years; first in Malton, then in Rexdale from 2005 to 2013. “As a female, I thought it would be easier to sell screening, but it wasn’t,” Chen said. “A number of my patients had never had a pap in their lives and they were in their 60s. ‘Why do I need a pap now?’ they would say. They only associated it with child-

birth. “Others would say, ‘I’m shy. I don’t feel comfortable showing anybody that part of my body.” Cancer may also be an uncomfortable topic in some cultures. “Nobody wants to hear the ‘C-word’. Certain cultures don’t talk about it openly,” Chen said. Yet, cancer is not inevitable, McFadyen stressed. Many cancers can be prevented or detected early and success-

fully treated. That is why screening is critically important. “If I could get people to understand that there are things they can do to take charge of their health that are highly, highly, highly effective to prevent them from getting some common cancers, then I think more and more people would drive the issue themselves,” McFadyen said. “They’d initiate a conversation with their family doctor about screening.”

Screening is also responsible for a dramatic increase in breast cancer survival rates, from 50 per cent in the 1970s to 86 per cent today, McFadyen reported. “At least one-third of that improvement is related to better screening,” he said. Further, breast cancer screening is important due to the fact “most women who get breast cancer do not have a family history,” McFadyen said. Regular breast cancer screening can detect cancer when it is small, which means a better chance to treat it successfully, less likelihood it will spread and the possibility of more treatment options, CCO reported. Women may feel reluctance to get a mammogram for fear the procedure will be painful. But Betty Wallace centre mammographer Barb Morant said the breast is only under compression for about a minute for each of four views taken. The entire mammogram takes only 10 to 15 minutes. “Even if it does hurt, it’s a short time and it’s over. If you’re sensitive, tell the technician,” Morant advised. “It’s your life. No one wants to be Stage 3 or Stage 4 (breast cancer). Why not come in and get checked?” Women 50 and older may go to the Betty Wallace centre for a mammogram without a requisition from their doctor because the centre is an Ontario Breast Cancer Screening affiliate site. “It’s important to do breast cancer screening as a preventative measure. It can be uncomfortable. But it is absolutely worth it,” said Cathy Holland, manager of the Betty Wallace Women’s Health Centre. “Everyone here feels it when someone has put off having a mammogram and it’s a bad outcome.”

 Be nice Clear Your

Ice

Snow and ice on your sidewalk can create a dangerous situation for pedestrians in your neighbourhood. Many people are hurt each year by falls on slippery sidewalks. But you can help keep your street safe. In Etobicoke, the City ofToronto clears snow and ice from the sidewalks. In December and March, the city plows the sidewalk after eight cm of snow has fallen. In January and February, the city plows after five cm has fallen. If the snowfall is less than eight cm (in December and March), or five cm (in January and February), it's your responsibility to clear the sidewalk.

Building character and confidence since 1981. We offer hands-on learning experiences with classes led by caring innovative teachers.

So, Etobicoke – Be nice and clear the snow and ice from the sidewalks. It's the right thing to do.

Royal Canadian Sea Cadets Corps Objibwa on parade. The Mimico air cadets’ unit hosts an open house on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at John English Junior Middle School.

Cadets learn about sailing, seamanship >>>from page 1 Canada’s sea cadet program. The program fosters the development of leadership skills, good citizenship and physical fitness, the Navy League reported. Sea cadets specialize in sailing, seamanship, shipboard life, naval communications, power boat handling, boat repair, and marine engineering.

Selected senior cadets have the opportunity to attend international exchanges, to sail aboard a Tall Ship or participate in ship deployments aboard Canadian Navy and Coast Guard ships. “Every cadet has the opportunity to apply for our summer training program,” King said. “It complements what we teach, including music, advanced sailing skills, advanced seamanship, rope

work, drills, marksmanship coaching, in addition to all the leadership aspects.” Sea cadets’ summer training takes place in Kingston, Ont., as well as in Nova Scotia and in British Columbia. Cadets are not members of the Canadian Forces nor are they expected to join the military.

Give your home a simple winter warm-up The cold temperatures are here to stay – so as you take cover indoors, it’s the perfect time to put home improvement projects on your to-do list. Here are a few ideas to make your home feel and look fabulous very quickly: • Weather the Winter Wisely. No one wants to spend money on high energy bills, so be sure your home isn’t losing heat through windows and doors that aren’t insulated properly. Updates such as weather stripping can keep the cool air out while keeping the warm air in.

And don’t stop there. Simple tasks, such as replacing worn-out caulk, insulating your outlets, and prepping your windows with plastic cling for the winter months can significantly reduce heating bills. • Quick Kitchen Upgrade. Cold weather keeps us inside with far more cooking and entertaining in the kitchen. The quickest way to update the kitchen, is by installing a new faucet. From food preparation to clean-up, the faucet is a major workhorse – as well as a beauty focal point. Pulldown and pull-

out faucets are a popular choice, some of which feature decorative touches and classic styling with a pullout design for atyour-fingertips water delivery. • Get Fired Up. Nothing feels better on a cold night than getting cozy by a fire, but is your fireplace prepped for the season? For a wood-burning fireplace, inspect the chimney for nests or cracks. Next, clean it thoroughly to remove creosote (unburned fuel) to prevent unwanted fires. For gas-burning fireplaces, be sure the

airways of the pilot and main burners are working properly and the blower is clean. Finally, be sure you have working carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, as well as an operational fire extinguisher nearby. Now it’s easy to relax and enjoy the warm glow safely. • Focus on Fixtures and Fans. With shorter winter days, there’s less natural light and so you may notice your fixtures a lot more. For added illumination and energy savings, update incandescent bulbs with brighter, Energy Star-

Smart property investments with these helpful tips

Tired of going it alone? Want to join a busy & established Real Estate team? Real Estate Sales Experience Required. Please call

Selling high and buying low is a home investors motto because of market fluctuations. The following are a few considerations investors should contemplate before buying a property. Location. When buying an investment property, location is everything. A great location should outweigh your own personal feelings about the home. You will likely define a great location for an investment property differently than you would a property you intend to live in, so don’t let your own desires in a home cloud your judgement. Properties in safe neighborhoods that boast good schools and offer easy access to public transportation tend to make great investment properties. Décor. If you don’t plan to re-

416-237-1173

a new year a new you and a new take on real estate services

let’s talk

side in the property, your opinion of the décor should not carry much weight. When viewing a property, imagine how much it might appeal to prospective tenants. Quirky properties typically do not appeal to as many prospective tenants as properties whose décor are similar to other homes in the area. Though you might find a tenant who prefers properties with unique interiors, a property that appeals to as many prospective tenants as possible often makes for a better investment. Condition. Some investors want a fixer-upper, while others prefer turnkey properties that won’t require any elbow grease. The former type of property likely won’t cost as much, but those cost savings might be lost when

it’s time to renovate. Find a property that’s in the type of condition you’re comfortable with. If you decide to go with a fixer-upper, learn the cost of your potential projects before submitting an offer. Cost. Before making an offer on a property, research rents in the area and the cost of insurance in that particular neighborhood. You want a property that essentially pays for itself, so make sure the rent you’re likely to collect is enough to cover your monthly costs including the mortgage on the property and insurance. Real estate investors often reap great rewards when selling their properties. But it’s still important for potential investors to consider a host of factors before investing in a property.

The hammering of road work could be going on through the night on some city projects if council approves a new policy to speed up traffic-snarling construction. The policy, which was recommended at the Jan. 6 Public Works and Infrastructure Committee meeting, will mean that in certain cases – and at a price premium – contractors will toil around the clock to make sure that the project is finished as quickly as possible. The policy comes after Mayor John Tory announced that the city would pay that premium to have work finished on this phase of the Gardiner Expressway rehabilitation. Under the proposed policy, work could continue 24 hours a day, seven days a week on expressways and major roads

Last week, Centennial Ski and Snowboard Centre didn’t have enough snow for skiing. That’s changing this week, thanks to the colder weather.

Centennial Ski and Snowboard Centre could open this weekend depending on amount of snow TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Let it snow. The weather outside is becoming frightful. And that is welcome news to countless skiers and snowboarders eagerly awaiting this winter’s opening of the Centennial Ski and Snowboard Centre. While it hasn’t snowed much, the recent plummeting temperatures thrust the city snowmaking operation into high gear this week at the winter hot spot. “We’re focused right now

on creating as much accumulation as possible. The temperatures today and tonight are ideal,” Cheryl Dix, city community recreation supervisor said Tuesday. “Crews are on 24 hours a day making snow. Parks staff are fabulous at it.” Centennial ski and snowboard lessons had to be postponed a week due to insufficient snow and cold temperatures, Dix confirmed. Those lessons are scheduled to begin Jan. 12 to 16. City staff notified those affected, Dix said.

The snow making will continue. Any extra snow will be stockpiled at the Rathburn and Renforth roads area centre. “Any time there is an opportunity to make more snow, we’re making it,” Dix said. “We’re forever hopeful for more snow (fall).” City staff will make the call within a day or two whether to open the centre this weekend. Visit tinyurl.com/mfxznxs or call the centre at 416-3948753 for updates on its opening. “Think snow,” Dix said.

Several “tags” were spotted on the new five-metre high wall located just north of Ruskin Avenue by area residents last weekend, including local activist Kevin Putnam. In 2013, Putnam was part of a group proposing an alternative “green” design for the walls made entirely of natural vegetation whose benefits included reducing the likelihood of graffiti. NOTICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE #3 Queen Elizabeth Way Preliminary Design and Class Environmental Assessment Study from Evans Avenue to Cawthra Road THE STUDY The Ontario Ministry of Transportation is undertaking a Preliminary Design and Class Environmental Assessment Study to examine rehabilitation and improvement needs for the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) from Evans Avenue to Cawthra Road. The study limits extend approximately 3.5 km through the City of Mississauga (Region of Peel) and the City of Toronto. THE PROCESS This study is following the approved environmental planning process for Group ‘B’ projects under the Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000), with the opportunity for public input throughout. Three Public Information Centres (PICs), three Community Workshops, and one Community Information Session (CIS) are being held to facilitate public involvement. Upon completion of the study, a Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR) will be completed and made available for a 30-day public review period. Newspaper notices will be published at that time to explain the review process and identify the locations where the TESR is available for viewing. PUBLIC CONSULTATION The first PIC was held on October 11, 2012 and the first Community Workshop was held on December 8, 2012. The purpose of the PIC and Community Workshop was to provide the public the opportunity to review and comment on the alternatives under consideration and the proposed evaluation criteria. A second PIC was held on October 24, 2013 and the second Community Workshop was held on November 16, 2013. The purpose of the second PIC and Community Workshop was to provide an opportunity for interested parties to review and comment on the results of the assessment and evaluation process, and to present the overall technically preferred alternative. A CIS for the replacement of the Ogden Avenue Pedestrian Bridge was held on November 24, 2014 to allow members of the public the opportunity to review and comment on the proposed Ogden Avenue Pedestrian Bridge replacement alternatives and the proposed evaluation criteria. The third and final PIC has been arranged to allow the public and interest groups an opportunity to review and comment on refinements to the overall technically preferred alternative presented at PIC 2, the preliminary design and the potential mitigation measures. The PIC will be a drop-in style, open house session to allow members of the public to review display materials and discuss the study one-on-one with members of the Project Team. Members of the public, local residents and business representatives are encouraged to attend. The PIC will be held as follows: Date: Thursday, January 22, 2015 Location: Le Treport Wedding and Convention Centre, Salon B 1075 Queensway East Mississauga, ON L4Y 4C1 Time: 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. COMMENTS Comments and information regarding this study will be collected to assist the Project Team. This material will be maintained on file for use during the study and may be included in study documentation.Comment forms and study information are available on the study website at www.qewdixieea.ca. Information collected will be used in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Access to Information Act. With the exception of personal information, all comments will become part of the public record. Etobicoke youth join touring team A couple of Etobicoke youths will extend their high level hockey playing beyond the winter season. Both are defenders currently playing in the Greater Toronto Hockey League at the triple-A minor peewee level – Christian Bergmann with the Toronto Young Nationals and Owain Johnston with the Toronto Marlboros. Both secured themselves a spot on an international touring youth team with a spring trip to Italy on the agenda. The two were selected at a tryout camp Jan. 1 in Amherst, New York, organized by the U.S.-based Selects Hockey program, an elite, privately run hockey prospect development program. The coach of that team, Joe Templin, said both were “suberb” at tryout, demonstrating “an incredible work ethic and passion on the ice.”

Exceeding Expectations For Over 90 Years

Connor Brown nabs AHL’s rookie of the month honour for December Etobicoke native Connor Brown won the Ontario Hockey League scoring crown last year with the Erie Otters. This year, in his first year playing pro with the Toronto Marlies, he is challenging for the American Hockey League rookie scoring title, currently in second place with 28 points (nine goals, 19 assists) in 35 games. And in the first week of the new year he had an honour come his way, named as the AHL’s rookie

of the month for December, tallying 12 points (5g, 7a) in 14 games. He has kept up the pace in the new year with four points (1g, 3a) in two games, thus far, heading into a southern road trip this weekend, Saturday, Jan. 10 at Texas and Sunday at San Antonio. Brown, a sixth-round draft pick by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2012, is a former student at Michael Power Catholic Secondary (and member of the varsity school hockey team).
