Crowdfunding campaign for kitten gets messy No police investigation, but it’s unclear where funds will be distributed

TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com The majority of nearly $10,000 in donations to a crowdfunding campaign to help an injured kitten thrown onto Hwy. 427 pledged to Toronto Humane Society, the organization treating him, is now being redirected to other animal rescue chari-

ties. Toronto Humane Society (THS) officials filed a fraud complaint with Toronto police after an email sent to them in December by the Indiegogo campaign administrator stated they would not be getting the funds, THS officials reported. Toronto police confirmed Wednesday the investigation, at this point, is closed. “As of right now, there is nothing criminal,” Toronto police spokesperson Const. Victor Kwong said. “The Indiegogo >>>THS, page 10

Ward 1 councillor and deputy mayor Vince Crisanti’s decision to quit two boards just weeks after being appointed was simply a time management issue, he said in an interview. The decision had nothing to do with health matters indicated from a trip by ambulance to hospital last week, said

Crisanti. “Really all that happened there is when I was asked to be deputy mayor by our Mayor John Tory, I decided at that time to just review my committees given that I wanted to focus on my role as deputy mayor… so what I decided to do was act very quickly to make some adjustments,” Crisanti said. CLARIFICATION A story on page 1 of the Dec. 31 edition of The Etobicoke Guardian, headlined ‘Boy, 10, presented with new BMX bike’, included a subheading that may have been misleading. In fact, the boy in the story won the contest, organized by Oxygen Bike Co., because he was deemed a ‘great kid’ overall based on his merits as outlined by his nominator. The Guardian regrets the error.

MPP honours outstanding residents, groups Florence Thiffault, 97-yearold lawn bowler, among the many award recipients CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke Centre MPP Yvan Baker paid tribute to more than 30 individuals and organizations for making a difference in the community this past weekend at his first annual New Year’s Levee. Continuing the tradition of his predecessor, Donna Cansfield, Baker presented the 2014 Community Recognition Awards during a ceremony on Sunday afternoon at the PLAST Huculak Centre. There, he recognized recipients in four different categories. “There are so many people who make a difference in our community and who go unrecognized, so I thought it was important to continue this tradition to make sure that people in the community are aware of the good things that are happening in Etobicoke Centre and to encourage others to get involved with some of the wonderful organizations that are doing all this work,” Baker said in an interview with The Guardian. “If you look at the people being recognized today, they come from a wide range of

ages and backgrounds and they’re contributing in all different ways – they’re supporting seniors, they’re helping with scouts and youth organizations, and a whole range of other services. The one thing they all have in common is they all do wonderful work and they all deserve to be recognized.” One of the stand-out honorees at this year’s Community Recognition Awards was 97-year-old lawn bowler Florence Thiffault, who was recognized for her many years of volunteer service to the Etobicoke Lawn Bowling Club (ELBC) and beyond as a player, coach and umpire. “I was honoured and delighted when I heard,” Thiffault said about learning she was to be one of this year’s Community Recognition Award recipients. “I was so surprised. It was so unexpected, because I’ve really loved every minute and every hour that I’ve spent lawn bowling.” A member of ELBC since 1980, Thiffault said she began lawn bowling at age 50 with the Boulevard Club on the advice of a fellow curler. “I had spent many summers away at our farm for 20

years, and when my husband took ill and wasn’t able to go anymore, one of the curlers that I curled with at the time asked me to lawn bowl,” she told The Guardian. “I was frightened to go, however I went, and I’ve quite enjoyed it. Lawn bowling has been very good to me over the years.” In the nearly half century since she took up the sport, Thiffault has enjoyed many lawn bowling successes, including: competing at the district and provincial levels;

serving as president of the Ontario Ladies Lawn Bowling Association; sitting on the ELBC board for many years and serving as president of the ladies section; becoming a certified Ontario provincial umpire and being appointed ELBC’s club coach in 2001. “...I asked if she could give me a lesson and she said she would, so I’m looking forward to it,” Baker laughed.

Organizations often need to adapt to better serve communities

O

rganizations grow. Sometimes they shrink. But they have to evolve to remain relevant and cost-effective. In the case of United Way Toronto, sometimes they merge with another organization – the United Way of York Region. That’s one example of charitable merger aiming to have the whole of the two parts better serve the people of the region. We think it’s worthwhile for smaller, communitybased organizations to look around at like-minded groups, or others competing for the same charitable dollar and see if they can serve their community better through merger or at least a partnership. Some questions to ask: Is the organization meeting its stated goals? Is the organization having the community impact it desires? Is there overlap or duplication of effort happening with another organization? Is it a struggle to find members our view to do the volunteer work or to sit on oversight boards? Can admincosts be reduced? Could Merger can istrative fresh ideas surface when two groups work together? help better These are just a few of the quesorganizations tions that can provide healthy introspection. Think about it. If an organization finds there are certain challenges that are increasingly difficult to overcome, why wouldn’t they explore different ways of approaching those challenges by reaching out to other organizations and considering ways they can join forces? It doesn’t have to be an outright merger. An informal partnership can go a long way toward helping both parties out. For example, perhaps the opportunity exists for the pooling of resources, which can help streamline costs, avoid duplication and ensure the efforts of the volunteer base are deployed as efficiently as possible. The opportunities that can be created are intriguing: knowledge-sharing, new ideas, an energized volunteer base. All contribute to the combined strength of a collective whole. The keys to any successful partnership – however formal it may be – are the ability to incorporate the unique needs of the component parts to create a whole that’s better equipped to face the challenges of the day. It’s that standard by which partnerships should be measured. When opportunities exist to better serve a community’s needs, it’s always worth exploring. Organizations that ask themselves those questions will get those opportunities.

When handed lemons, opposition makes lemonade

P

laying opposition at city council is delicate work. With no official party system and in its place a coalition of disparate interests in orbit of a – usually – popular mayor, it’s tough to get traction. Contrarian councillors outside that orbit are left to spend their days scouring agendas, waiting for dis-incentived senior staff to return calls and emails, and working the press gallery to try and get their ideas in front of the public. The pitfalls are many. During the David Miller era, right-of-centre councillors stumbled around for years before forming a coalition called The Responsible Government Group that tried with scant success to critique the mayor’s agenda. Councillors on the left took a different approach with Mayor Rob Ford in 2010, taking the give-him-

david nickle the city rope-to-hang-himself tack until finally, he did so. It’s clear neither approach is going to work with sober, steady old John Tory – who has an ambitious agenda and the resolve to keep potential opposition away from committees that might affect that agenda. And so it is that on Monday, progressive councillors adopted another strategy: if the mayor gives you lemons, make lemonade. little influence? The lemons Tory gave Gord Perks, Mike Layton, Sarah Doucette, Joe Cressy and Maria Augimeri were seats on the Parks and Environment Committee: a committee historically known for light agendas

and little influence. That will likely not be the case this term. As of Jan. 12, the committee has a subcommittee: the Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Subcommittee. Chairing it will be Perks, who in addition to representing Parkdale-High Park has had a long career as an environmental advocate. Also on the committee are Doucette, Layton and Cressy. The subcommittee will begin holding public meetings promptly, to talk about ways in which the city can move into a leadership role in battling climate change, worldwide. Following from that, the subcommittee will likely bring recommendations to the Parks and Environment Committee – which, owing to its membership, will send those recommendations to council. And from there, into the

new mayor’s lap. It will be awkward: climate change mitigation can be expensive, and politically challenging, as it enters into areas where Torontonians are divided: everything from green energy programs to anti-car initiatives and the dreaded “bag tax” from the Miller era. One courting the redmeat conservative support from Ford Nation will have a hard time backing much of that agenda. But failing to back some of that agenda will play just as badly with the centre-left and pure centre voters, for a mayor hoping to maintain a broad base of support. It will be interesting to see how this uniquely passive act of aggression plays out. David Nickle is The Guardian’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. HumberLaunch opens its doors, offers its services to broader public

Upcoming information sessions to introduce public to the business services, mentoring that are now available CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Budding Etobicoke entrepreneurs will now be able to cultivate unique business ideas into successful ventures under the tutelage of the experts at HumberLaunch. Billed as “Etobicoke’s destination for entrepreneurial innovation”, HumberLaunch was initiated two-and-ahalf years ago as a means to mentor business-minded Humber College students – providing them with the physical resources, business advice, knowledge, skills development, mentors and networking opportunities required during the start-up phase of any business development. Now, HumberLaunch is set to expand the availability of those services to the larger Etobicoke community, said Sarah Lenarcic, HumberLaunch’s Community Outreach co-ordinator. “ We’re v e r y e xc i t e d , because as of this past fall, we’re now able to provide our services to community members. And since 99 per cent of our services are free, it’s really exciting for the community, too,” said Lenarcic of HumberLaunch, which is based out of Humber’s Lakeshore Campus and part of college’s Research and Innovation Office. “We think this is something that will be very exciting for the community and very valuable to them.” To h e l p i n t r o d u c e HumberLaunch and its services to the wider Etobicoke community, Lenarcic and a colleague are set to host a series of upcoming information sessions for the public. The sessions will take place

as follows: n Tuesday, Jan. 20 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Humber Summit library, 2990 Islington Ave. (Room 1) n Tuesday, Jan. 27 from 1 to 2 p.m. at New Toronto library, 110 Eleventh St. (in the Alex J. Faulkner Community Room) n Tuesday, Feb. 3 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Humber Summit library, 2990 Islington Ave. (Room 1) To register for any of the above information sessions, go to www.humber. ca/humberlaunch/ CommunityInfoSessions Lenarcic said the only criteria to apply for HumberLaunch is that applicants have a “unique and innovative” business idea, and that they be serious in their pursuit of it.

serious applicants “We deal with individuals at the ideation stage,” she said. “We don’t expect them to necessarily have a prototype or an extensive business plan, but we do expect people to be serious about their idea.” Those accepted into the HumberLaunch program are then given access to a number of different resources to help them on their way to making their business dream a reality – including assistance with business plan development; access to HumberLaunch’s computers, meeting rooms, printers, copier, 3-D printer, etc.; invitations to networking events and workshops hosted by HumberLaunch; funding opportunities; one hour of free legal and branding consultancy services; and mentorship relationships with both industry and Humber faculty mentors.

HumberLaunch alumni Jacob Farjou credits the program for helping him get his business off the ground. After receiving his Humber diploma in Health Promotion and a degree in Kinesiology from York University, Farjou recently returned to Humber for post-graduate studies in Exercise Science and Lifestyle Management, in the hopes of opening his own clinic after graduation. “I’ve been in school for so long and I’ve learned

my industry inside and out – kinesiology, health and wellness, rehabilitation. But the thing is, I didn’t really learn anything about how to run a business the whole time I was in school. So, HumberLaunch was there to help fill that void – the amount of resources they have are endless,” said Farjou, giving special credit for his success to HumberLaunch mentor Steve Bang, a professor in Humber’s School of Business. “I was in need of a mentor

to help me in what I was trying to do and they matched me with Steve. The relationship was phenomenal. He helped me out so much – he was there to help me with the finances and the budget and how to properly set up a budget and cash flow statements...I couldn’t have asked for a better mentor.” Now, less than a year later, Farjou is on the verge of seeing his business dream come true – Trainsmart Wellness, Farjou’s kinesiology-based clinic and gym, is set to host its grand opening next week in Brampton. With yet another success story under its belt in Farjou, HumberLaunch is now looking for even more business

ventures to support, Lenarcic said, encouraging would-be entrepreneurs to attend HumberLaunch’s upcoming information sessions. “Basically anybody who’s looking to start a business, who has no idea where to turn, we’re your destination, because we focus solely on business startups,” she said. “This is an opportunity to come out, check us out, and see what we do. The HumberLaunch offices are located at 3180 Lake Shore Blvd. W. and are open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Stonegate property set for rezoning

Because family matters

Community Council notes from the Jan. 13 meeting A preliminary report was approved regarding a rezoning application for Stonegate Plaza at 144 and 150 Berry Rd. proposing to allow for a phased, mixed-use development on the site. The first phase would consist of a two-storey commercial building containing a grocery store and relocated Stonegate Community Health Centre, located at the south-

west corner of the site. Phase two would include three mid-rise residential buildings (one 10-storey and two six-storey buildings) and a three-storey, 16-unit townhouse block near the centre of the site, as well as a new public road and publicly accessible open space. In total, the proposed development would contain a total of 496 residential units

and 670 parking spaces. With the approval of the preliminary report, City of Toronto Planning staff will now proceed with scheduling a public consultation meeting alongside Ward 5 Councillor Justin Di Ciano, which will be targeted for sometime in the first quarter of 2015.

THS says Howard still first in line to take kitten home after its foster care >>>from page 1 money has not been distributed. Not until we see where that money is going could there be a crime.” Further, Kwong confirmed THS’ concern is with the Indiegogo campaign, not with Mandi Howard, the woman who rescued the kitten and brought him to Toronto Humane Society’s River Street facility for emergency veterinary treatment. “Toronto Humane Society at no point here is saying that the woman who turned in the cat is doing anything criminal. They had concerns with Indiegogo,” Kwong said. Howard rescued the tiny kitten thrown from a fastmoving vehicle as he lay straddled between the shoulder and passing lane on Hwy. 427 on Dec. 3. Vets at THS estimate the total cost of their care of the kitten they named Pedro at $1,000. Pedro is in foster care with a Toronto Humane Society veterinary assistant. He will likely be ready for adoption in about two weeks, and Howard, a hospital emergency department nurse, remains “first in line” to adopt him, society spokesperson Makyla Deleo said. “Mandi adopting Pedro and the issue of the Indiegogo campaign are two separate situations,” Deleo said. “We have made it very clear to her that once Pedro has recovered, she will be first in line to adopt him.” On Friday, THS officials held a news conference stating it had no connection to the Indiegogo campaign, and would not be accepting any donations from it. THS believes Indiegogo donors were “misled” about the intention for the funds, Deleo said. Some Indiegogo donors have contacted THS. “A number of people are asking, ‘what has happened with the funds?’” Deleo said. “‘What are the next steps?’ Some are concerned about the (media) reports of the Indiegogo situation.” The confusing cat tale centres around pledges made on Howard’s Facebook page and on the Indiegogo campaign page to donate the crowdsourced funding to Pedro’s

The online crowdfunding initiative for the rescued kitten Pedro has been the subject of controversy in recent days.

care and the Toronto Humane Society. However since, the Indiegogo administrator has stated the considerable funds remaining after Pedro’s vet bills are paid, nearly $9,000, will be donated instead to “other animal rescues and charities”. Howard’s friend Radhika Subramanyan, is listed online with her as a member of the campaign team. THS confirmed Subramanyan was the author of the email. Howard’s lawyer Camille Labchuk did not respond to The Guardian’s request for comment Tuesday about why the Indiegogo funds intended for Pedro and THS are now being redirected to other animal charities. “No money has yet been received from Indiegogo,” Labchuk said in a statement. “When the funds go through, the Toronto Humane Society is welcome to a generous donation. Any remaining funds will be donated to animal charities.” On Dec. 6, Howard’s Facebook page announced the crowdfunding campaign and pledged its funds to Pedro’s care with any remaining funds donated to THS. “The money will be used for ongoing care for him and what is not used in medical bills will be given to THS (the Toronto Humane Society) as a token of love and appreciation. Our boy is pushing thru!!! I’m so in love with his spirit!!” Howard wrote. The campaign’s goal was $2,000. Donations quickly soared to $6,000 within two days. The crowdfunding collected $9,596 by the time it ended last Monday, Jan. 5.

More than 300 people contributed to the Indiegogo campaign. However, that publicly stated intention, widely reported in the media, to provide Indiegogo donors’ funds to THS has since changed. Subramanyan, the Indiegogo administrator, sent the society an email on Dec. 16 stating it would no longer be the recipient of the crowdfunding, Deleo said. That prompted officials to call police. “Some people are saying we jumped the gun (by going to police),” Deleo said. “The reason we contacted police is because of that email we received Dec. 16 from the campaign’s administrator. It indicated funds would not be coming to the humane society. We felt people had been misled.” Deleo confirmed Subramanyan made a $1,000 donation to THS online last Friday night. Whether Toronto Humane keeps Subramanyan’s donation, or accepts any of the Indiegogo money, has yet to be decided, Deleo said Tuesday. A post on the Indiegogo page after the campaign closed Jan. 5 confirmed the bulk of the nearly $10,000 in donations will not be donated to Toronto Humane. “As the campaign greatly exceeded our original goal – our plans are to ensure that Toronto Humane Society’s expenses are fully covered and then to provide donations to other animal rescues and charities,” the Indiegogo page stated.

Public meeting coming on Eglinton Avenue West townhouse development CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com

com/m2qlncs One of the major problems with the proposed development for the newly elected councillor for Ward 4, John Campbell, is the fact that the community was not allowed the opportunity to weigh in on it. Due to the unfortunate timing of the application, filed as it was shortly before council’s summer recess, followed by the municipal election recess, there was no community consultation on the issue. “It’s more than unfortunate that no consultation occurred, because there’s a lot of development going on the north side of Eglinton and people are perplexed,” he said.” As such, Campbell moved a motion that a community consultation meeting for area residents take place, perhaps in the last week of January.

EVENT

A proposed Eglinton Avenue West townhouse development destined to go before the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) in March landed back at Etobicoke York Community Council this week, as city planning staff continue to try to hammer out the details of a settlement with the developer. The application for 4780 Eglinton Ave. W. – a twohectare parcel of vacant land located on the northeast corner of Eglinton and Widdicombe Hill Boulevard, just west of Kipling Avenue – proposes the development of 89 freehold, three-storey townhouses and a new culde-sac public road. The case was appealed to the OMB on Sept. 12, 2014, just five months after the original application was submitted to the city. In the appeal, the developer of the property cited “city council’s

failure to render a decision on the zoning bylaw amendment and associated draft plan of subdivision and site plan control applications in the time frame prescribed by the Planning Act.” An OMB hearing date has since been scheduled for March 23. In the meantime, however, talks between the developer and the city have continued, leading to the Dec. 8, 2014 submission of a revised proposal for 4780 Eglinton Ave. W. – a proposal Neil Cresswell, director of community planning for Etobicoke York District, characterized as “worthy of a settlement to discuss at the OMB, subject to a number of conditions.” At Tuesday’s meeting of Etobicoke York Community Co u n c i l , h ow e v e r, t h e solicitor for the developer, Bruce Ketcheson of Ritchie Ketcheson Hart and Biggart, said his client took issue with a number of those conditions. be Orpen, described by the media as “a gentleman with a shady reputation” or as “one of the most mysterious... men in the history of Toronto”, had penchant for both gambling and horse racing. But he was also renowned for his honesty in dealing with betting men and for his generosity toward anyone down on his luck. His horse racing enterprises included several tracks in Toronto. When his Hillcrest Race Track was taken over for TTC yards, he quickly took a chance on a more distant locale and purchased a 98-acre property in Etobicoke on the north side of Horner Avenue, between Kipling Avenue and the CPR spur line. On Sept. 6, 1924, Orpen opened his new Long Branch Race Track with a half-mile track. Despite its distance from the city, the track was an instant success. Throughout the late summer and fall, thousands would flock to the

denise harris history corner track to watch – and gamble on - both thoroughbred and standard-bred racing. In 1926, at a cost of $250,000, Orpen added a clubhouse and a mile-long track that encircled the original track. Long Branch was then the only race track in North America to have both halfmile and one-mile tracks. Abe and his son Fred operated this track jointly until Abe died in 1937. Fred continued to operate it until 1955 when he decided to get out of the race track business and sold several tracks, including Long Branch, to E.P. Taylor of the Ontario Jockey Club. Taylor closed all of the smaller race tracks to push business towards the New Woodbine Race Track that opened in 1956 at Hwy. 27 and Rexdale Boulevard. Long Branch Race Track’s legacy is that it was the site of two races that are

still featured in Canadian racing today. The Canadian International Championship was first run as the Long Branch Championship Stakes in 1938. In addition, Abe Orpen’s wife, Isabella, initiated the Cup and Saucer Stakes for Canadian-foaled two-yearolds at Long Branch. If you enjoy poking about for remnants of the past, one of two tall brick and stone gateposts that once marked the race track entrance still survives on Horner Avenue immediately east of the CPR track. In addition, a beautiful avenue of maple trees that lined the entryway still stands there. A City of Toronto heritage plaque in front of the gatepost tells the race track’s story and includes an aerial photo of the race track. How to keep your home sensational at a lower cost Like fashion trends in clothing, the latest décor trends are a great way to liven up and personalize a home. Be aware, however, that while adding a selection of seasonal trends can be a great way to update a space, it can also be the fastest way to date it as well – not to mention create a hefty dent in your wallet. Glen Peloso and Jamie Alexander of Peloso Alexander Interiors says they have seen their share of trends come and go, and knows firsthand that just a little colour and even the tiniest of budgets can go a long way. “Every season we see homeowners

looking for what’s new and hot in reno ideas. Everything from how to open up a space to new flooring materials, as well as the hottest paint colour and eco-friendly products,” they point out. Peloso and Alexander recommend home shows because they offer a one-stop solution for homeowners looking to refresh their space. One great advantage is attendees soon realize by visiting the exhibitors and asking those experts a few questions, they can make big changes on a small budget. Here are some tried and tested tips to freshen up a space without breaking the bank:

1. Define the space: A room’s purpose drives everything (i.e. a cozy guest room or a living room that sparks conversation). Defining the room’s main purpose will help to set the parameters for the design and help to determine budget. 2. Be selective about which pieces to invest in: The couch, or a dining table and chairs, are important for anchoring the room. Invest in the larger staple items by selecting quality pieces in a neutral palette. The rest of the room can then be planned around these essentials. 3. Don’t be afraid of colour: An inexpensive way to

give any space a major overhaul is to paint or wallpaper one feature wall. Add an extra pop by introducing accent colours in accessories such as pillows, or vases in seasonal shades to personalize a space. 4. Accessorize galore: Accessories are a fantastic way to add character into a space at a low cost. Colourful throw pillows, vases, and lamps, for example, add a refreshing new style without a long term commitment. They can also be easily switched up each season.

Obituary

Marilyn Duff remembered as ‘headstrong’ and ‘dedicated’ TOM GODFREY etg@insidetoronto.com A memorial service was held for longtime Etobicoke resident Marilyn Duff who worked as a reporter, in public relations and city politics before retiring to Prince Edward County. Dozens of friends and mourners attended a service last Saturday to pay tribute to Duff at Whattam Funeral Home, on Main Street in Picton. Born in Toronto on June 18, 1947, Marilyn lost a short battle with inoperable cancer on Jan. 6 and died with her family at her side at Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital. She was 67. She was married to Bill for 41 years and they are parents of Susannah, who teaches French in Australia; and Michael, a security consultant for the City of Toronto and Lieutenant with the Queen’s

York Rangers. Bill described Marilyn as his “best friend” and credited her “headstrong” ways as part of her Scottish ancestry, “We are very proud to be our mother’s children,” added Susannah, who thanked her mom for a “life of learning which we will hopefully pass on to our children.” The Duffs lived and raised their children in the Islington Avenue and Dundas Street West area of Etobicoke for more than 20 years before moving to Prince Edward County about 11 years ago, where they retired on a 21-acre farm. Marilyn loved Etobicoke and met many residents while working as a reporter. She also worked in public relations for the federal government and was an executive assistant for former Etobicoke Mayor Doug Holyday, in the days leading up to and after amalgamation.

She headed Holyday’s downtown office from 1994 to 1997 as the five Metro boroughs and mayors’ offices were being amalgamated to form the City of Toronto. “She represented me on behalf of the city and she did a great job,” Holyday recalled. “I am saddened that she has passed on.” ‘Always enthusiastic’ He first met Marilyn when she was working as a volunteer on one of his campaigns. She began working for him after he was elected. “She was one of the first persons I hired when I was looking for staff,” the 20-year former councillor and MPP said. “She was always enthusiastic and did such a great job.” Prior to politics, Marilyn’s byline was known from her days covering local news for the Etobicoke Life newspaper,

that operated from 1990 to 2000. Patrick McConnell, then a Life reporter and editor, said he was saddened by Marilyn’s death and that she will be greatly missed by her many friends. Family friend Ian Robertson said Marilyn was always interested in journalism. “She was a very dedicated journalist who had a keen interest in the world and what was going on,” Robertson recalled. “She was a warm and bubbly person who was fun to be with.” Marilyn, who was a graduate of Trent and Carlton Universities, was also wellknown as an avid gardener and animal lover. She had on her farm as pets a dog, cats, rabbits and chickens. Bill is a retired newspaperman, who is a former night editor for the Toronto Sun and city editor of the Kitchener Waterloo Record.

Marilyn Duff, longtime Etobicoke resident, died January 6 at age 67 after a short battle with inoperable cancer.

Here’s How Dental Implants Can Help You Look and Feel Your Best Again

L

osing teeth sucks... If you lose a back tooth, it’s harder to chew... If you lose a front tooth, you hesitate to smile because you don’t want it to show. Hi, I’m Dr. Milica Stamenkovic and I understandthetremendous sense of loss and vulnerability you feel when you lose a tooth. You might even experience a feeling of dread that your other teeth might suffer the same fate. The last thing you want is to have all your teeth sitting in a glass on the night table. You’re not alone. Losing a tooth happens to the best of us. Teeth are naturally strong, but the more dental work you have on a tooth, the weaker it tends to be. On top of that, we’re all

living longer, so lots of “mileage” can accumulate on your teeth. All that wear and tear can spell trouble, as your teeth wear down and weaken to the point they break apart. The good news is that Dental Implants can give you a miracle second chance. Often, it’s your best option for a missing tooth. Over the past ten years the number of North Americans receiving implant dentistry has more than tripled. People are living longer, healthier lives and they want the better option. Here’s what you need to do: 1. Adopt a Lifetime Strategy for your dental health. Think longterm rather than quick-fix. 2. Determine an appropriate

Beat Lower Back, Disc And Sciatic Pain Now

hankfully, new natural treatment methods help many find the relief they had been searching for. Sciatica is a painful condition that affects the sciatic nerve. The pain usually radiates into one or both buttocks, descends the back of the leg and can sometime be felt in the foot. It is often a severe, knife-like pain, but can also be noticed as numbness or tingling in the leg and foot. It is unpredictable and does not go away even when you change positions or lay down. Sciatica can result from years of poor posture, muscle strain, pregnancy, excess weight, wearing high heels, or sleeping on a very soft mattress. Sciatica is often a symptom of a slipped disc, pinched nerve or arthritis. Although pain pills may temporarily cover up the symptoms, our holistic approach can provide a more effective, long term relief. “Our team members apply their individual skills and knowledge to make an accurate diagnosis and administer the right treatment that will get the best result for each patient.”

Dr. Peter Ng has a special interest in natural pain relief and Chinese medicine.

TO in TRANSIT The TTC wasted no time at all scheduling its first construction-related subway closure for 2015. The closure, which took place last weekend from Union to St. Andrew stations, is the first of a series planned between now and March to put the finishing touches on the TTC’s $137 million topto-bottom renovation of Union Station in time for the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Part of the remaining work includes installing a 152-metre wall dividing the Union and Yonge platforms made up of glass panels adorned with art. Three additional weekend subway closures are currently planned for the Union Station work. For more information visit www.ttc.ca RELEASES NUMBERS ON RIDE wOPP

There wasn’t much change compared to last year in the number of impaired driving charges laid by the OPP during the holidays. The OPP’s annual holiday RIDE crackdown, which took place from Nov. 24 to Jan. 2, resulted in 593 impaired driving charges for Ontario

CONTEST HELPS BIKE NETWORK Winners were recently announced for a contest organized by the city to promote its mobile app used to log the frequency and distance of trips made on bicycle. Since it was launched last May, the Toronto Cycling App has recorded over 65,000 trips made throughout the city, giving cycling planners a better idea where Toronto’s bike network could be strengthened in the future. To date some 3,700 users have shared their riding data. As part of the contest, prizes were given to users of the app ranging from memberships to Bike Share Toronto to the grand prize: a new bike worth $700. The app is available for download for Android and the iPhone.
