Etobicoke’s Brittany MacLean upset with fourth-place finish RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com

Brittany MacLean will eat some junk food after all. MacLean, a medal hopeful for Canada, fell just short during Saturday evening’s Pan Am Games 800-metre freestyle swimming final at the Pan Am Aquatic Centre. She ended up finishing fourth, unable to hold off Venezuela’s Andreina Pinto for the bronze late in the gruelling eight-minute-plus race. American Sierra Schmidt took the gold and set a Pan Am record, while Kristel Kobrich of Chile won silver. Canadian Tabitha Baumann finished 10th overall. After the race a disappointed MacLean, who’s been described in interviews as a health-food nut, conceded she’d break her routine just for one night. “It’s been a rough year so I’ll treat myself a little bit,” she said. The Etobicoke native had a torrid 2014 twice-medalling at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and being named U.S. college swimmer of the year. But this year she has struggled with shoulder, leg and ear injuries. She was still able to qualify for Toronto’s Games but conceded she didn’t have enough stamina to get to the podium. “A lot has kept me out of the

water and I wasn’t as strong as I thought I’d be today,” she said. The Aquatics Centre was alive with activity all day Saturday with a strong redclad Canadian contingent loudly cheering on its athletes. There were also plenty of fans decked out in gear representing the U.S., Brazil and Mexico, among other nations. Carol Harvey, who traveled to the Aquatics Centre from Vaughan with her husband, Mike, said the atmosphere was unlike anything she’d experienced attending other spectator events. “Just so much energy, we’re really glad we came and it looks like Toronto is really embracing the Games,” said Harvey before the start of the evening finals. Emily Pickrem proudly

waved flags of Nova Scotia in honour of her younger cousin, Sydney, who earlier in the day set a Canadian record during her 200-metre individual medley heat. “I think the Games have been well-received,” said Pickrem. “We’re going to be screaming really loud. Sydney told us she’d never been in a swim meet this loud.” Sydney went on to take bronze in the final. MacLean compared the reception she received from her hometown fans to the one raucous English fans gave UK swimmer Rebecca Adlington during the 2012 London Olympics. At the time she imagined the reception was for her. “This time I knew it was actually for me and that’s really special and of course I wanted to win a medal for Canada, but I’ll have to settle for fourth tonight,” she said. In all, Canada ended up winning four medals, including Ryan Cochrane’s gold in the men’s 1500-metre freestyle on the final day of swimming at the Aquatics Centre. Canada finished third overall with 27 medals, including nine gold, over the five days of competition. Do you have a Pan Am Games experience you want to share with us? Email etg@insidetoronto.com

Alex Loginov places eighth in final TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke swimmer Alex Loginov placed eighth in the men’s 50-metre freestyle swimming finals of the Pan Am Games last Friday with a time of 22.47. He advanced to the final round after placing third in his heat during preliminary action at the CIBC Pan Am Aquatics Centre in Scarborough Friday morning. The 23 year old finished the first race of his international swimming career in a time of 22.37 seconds – 0.06 seconds back of first-place finisher Renzo Tjon-A-Joe, of Suriname, in Friday’s third heat.

The USA’s Josh Schneider won Pan Am gold, Brazil’s Bruno Fratus took silver, and George Richard Bovell of Trinidad and Tobago secured bronze in the men’s 50-m freestyle. Speed is Loginov’s race. The 50-m freestyle is the shortest competition distance. “What I like to get out of my race is to get the fastest possible speed I can achieve. My mentality is to get up to my fastest speed and hold it,” he said in a recent interview. Loginov was reflective about the Games long before he entered the Pan Am pool. “My goal in the Pan American Games is I want to be the best in my swimming career,” he said.

Alex Loginov

“Everyone wants to win. I’m no exception. But I’m not going to stress over what I can’t control. What I can control is my race. I’ll focus on my preparation for the competition. After I’m done, I’ll reflect on how it all turned out.”

Girl, 7, to sell lemonade to support SickKids patients

‘I just wanted to do something so that we could make those kids better’ CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Little Laura Goncalves is set to spend this Saturday morning turning lemons into lemonade – all in the name of children too ill to leave the hospital this summer. Inspired by a SickKids infomercial she saw on TV while watching Sunday morning cartoons two years ago, the then-five-year-old decided she wanted to give back the Toronto children’s hospital’s foundation with a fundraising lemonade stand. “I just wanted to do something so that we could make those kids better, and so that they could actually go home,” Laura, a Grade 3 student at St. Gregory’s Catholic School, said of her first venture into fundraising back in 2013. At the time, the Goncalves family was already in the midst of organizing a garage sale at their Etobicoke home, Laura’s dad Jorge explained. “We thought (a lemonade stand fundraiser) was a great idea, but that we might need to get Laura more traffic. So we got the entire community involved and made it a street sale,” he said. “Everyone pitched in and had their own garage sales, which brought a lot of people to Laura’s stand. It was great.” Bolstered by that street-wide series of sales on Abinger Crescent, Laura’s first fundraising lemonade stand in 2013 brought in $447 for the SickKids Foundation. Now seven, the budding philanthropist said this year she’s hoping her “Drink and Treat” stand, featuring lemonade, coffee and cookies,

will raise $500 – funds she would like used “to make medicines and get special medical tools to cure kids.” To help reach that goal, Goncalves said his daughter will once again have the support of her “great neighbourhood” on Abinger Crescent (near Kipling Avenue and Princess Margaret Boulevard), who have rallied to host another Community Yard Sale on Saturday, July 25 from 8 a.m. to noon. “It’s a very close community here on Abinger,” Goncalves said of his neighbours. “Everybody knows everybody, and everybody does what they can to help each other out. I can’t say enough about them.”

Local businesses such as Metro, M&M and Second Cup also agreed to help Laura out with her stand by donating gift cards and supplies – but only after the third grader pitched them herself. “She did all the talking – she pitched them the idea of what she’s doing, why she’s doing it, where the funds raised are going, and why they should donate,” Goncalves laughed. “It was quite funny, but everyone got onboard... She’s a seven-year-old who’s very ambitious. She has a love for people and she can’t get enough of making people smile.”

ast week, Mayor John Tory took to Twitter to ask Torontonians where the ‘Toronto’ sign, now in front of Nathan Phillips Square, should travel

next. Ideas for where the huge multi-coloured sign will be accepted until the end of the Parapan Am Games (Aug. 15) and should be Tweeted to @JohnTory with the hashtag #TORONTOsign The fun social media campaign is looking to crowdsource ideas for where the sign should be placed next – it’s scheduled to stay in front of Toronto City Hall until the end of the year. In a short video introducing the campaign, Tory cites places such as High Park, YongeDundas Square, and even jokes about putting the sign outside the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, home of the NHL’s Senators. Suggestions and photographs our view with the sign plunked somewhere in Toronto have started coming in: Build unity the new George Brown Campus, the Scarborough Bluffs, a resiby sharing dential neighbourhood, and even our sign perched atop the CN Tower. Some ideas are funny, others logical, and some just ridiculous. However, what this sign does offer Torontonians is a way to weigh in on how the city can connect. It’s one city, so the #TORONTOsign should visit every corner of Toronto. It would be a great way to build unity across the city. Imagine coming upon the sign in Mel Lastman Square, at Artscape Wychwood Barns, or the Guild Inn Park. Maybe as an entry point along the major highways coming into the city. How about walking along Queen Street in Parkdale and coming upon the sign at the amphitheatre at Dufferin Street? Maybe Councillor Norm Kelly is right, and the sign could sit above the Scarborough Bluffs looking out across Lake Ontario. How about Sunnyside Beach, the Financial District, Todmorden Mills or the Junction train platform? Toronto is considered a city within a park so why not do a travelling park tour? One thing is certain: the sign, installed for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, shouldn’t outstay its welcome. It should be on a tour of the city until it lets Torontonians feel they have connected with other Torontonians. This tour could pique interest in other areas of the city many people have not seen. It’s tough to get the west to travel east, or the north to head south. But, a #TORONTOsign might jump-start that migration.

Pondering a new role for UP Express route

N

ext week, the tunnel connecting the mainland to Billy Bishop Airport on the Toronto Islands will be open to the air-travelling public – becoming the second piece of air-travel infrastructure to come online in Toronto this year. The first opened its doors less than a month ago – the Union Pearson Express train service running from Union Station through Weston to Pearson International Airport. It is telling that these two pieces – one privately funded and the other using federal and provincial dollars – are providing transportation services to people with passports and plane tickets and cash. Meanwhile, transit improvements for the rest of us, simply trying to get around town day-to-day, plod along at their own pace, in the best case

david nickle the city fully funded and at worst pie-in-the-sky political dreams. It is in this context that I look at the TTCriders’ suggestion last weekend, that Metrolinx simply give up the Union Pearson Express as a mass-transit route, with a bit more sympathy than usual. The advocacy group based its argument on what seems a dubious study of its own, spending a morning rush-hour counting the number of riders going in and out of the Pearson station of the line, and counted just 14 on each train. Metrolinx offers up slightly better numbers and maintains that the new $27.50-a-ride train to the airport is a success. Yet, there is compelling reason to think about

what the express might do for the morning commute – and that has to do with the morning commute itself. As matters stand, the TTC is busting at the seams, and city council, in its wisdom, has decided to prioritize costly transit improvements that won’t provide relief very soon and will likely become even more costly. The Scarborough subway extension council approved will likely have to be realigned, to make way for Mayor John Tory’s SmartTrack surface rail that follows at a point the precise same route as the subway. And SmartTrack could run into its own problems, particularly in the west end through Etobicoke, on land that the city no longer owns.

Pearson line would immediately reduce the need, if there ever was one, for that western SmartTrack line. It is not, of course, as easy as that. The 15-minute service currently available in each direction for SmartTrack would probably have to be increased. Politically, abandoning air travellers for transit users would involve a mea culpa for the Wynne government and Metrolinx that might be untenable. It is, however, easy to get resentful while packed into a subway car, thinking of the ease that those few well-heeled travellers have now, making their way from their suite at the Royal York Hotel to the departure lounge at Pearson.

Claire Frances Muir, left, Paula Shultz, Kevin Hammond and Phillip Psutka appear in a scene from the Humber River Shakespeare ensemble’s production of The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Shakespeare meets the ’60s in The Merry Wives of Windsor LAURA DASILVA ldasilva@insidetoronto.com Shakespeare is gettin’ groovy, man. The Humber River Shakespeare Company (HRSC) is swinging into the ’60s with its summer tour of The Merry Wives of Windsor. “It’s not often performed, but it is one of the more accessible Shakespeare plays,” said artistic director Kevin Hammond. “It’s a very lighthearted situation comedy. It’s the first sitcom.” The story focuses on the bumbling drunk and womanizing Falstaff who infiltrates the world of Windsor. The women there are affluent and quick to see his game. “I liken Windsor to Muskoka cottage country. The people have wealth and time and just sort of sit back and entertain one another,” Hammond said. “Then this outsider comes to town and creates chaos. Everyone works to get back at him.” Hammond said even though Falstaff is a lazy slob, there’s a likeability to him. “There’s something wonderful about someone who can honour and live with his own impulses, even to excess,” he said. The idea of excess led Hammond to set the play in the 1960s. “It’s the time where you have this

burgeoning middle class that didn’t really exist before,” he said. “There’s this idea of leisure, acquisition and wealth that the previous generation didn’t have.” Another thing in excess is the number of characters the ensemble cast brings to life. Six actors play 17 different roles. Actor Paula Shultz plays Mistress Page, a suitor named Slender and a servant to Doctor Caius. “It’s pretty fast paced, but we’re having a great time playing all of the different characters,” she said. “It keeps us on our toes.” She said there’s a visibility to the costume and character changes, and that the audience is in on the joke. “We’re not running behind a curtain or into a tent to change,” she said. “There’s no sense in trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the audience.” For those pondering to go or not West Toronto tour dates: n July 25 & 26 Montgomery’s Inn n July 28 & 29 - Old Mill Inn and Spa, Toronto (Guaranteed performance, rain or shine) n July 30 - Etienne Brulé Park n July 31, Aug. 1 & 2 Montgomery’s Inn

to go out of fear the complicated language will be too confusing, Hammond said this warm-spirited play will be a merry experience for families and first-time Shakespearegoers. “There’s very little verse in this play. It’s pretty much all prose. It’s sounds modern and it’s easy to follow,” he said. “There’s really just one plot that drives the whole thing.” Hammond said there is something special about bringing theatre to communities and performing outdoors. “When you move outside, the audience is more present because they’re not doused in darkness,” he said. “You see them, which is the way Shakespeare plays were originally done, in the open air under the sky.” Hammond encourages people of all ages to head outside to witness the far-out farce. “It offers an experience that isn’t available on Netflix,” he laughed. The HRSC Merry Wives of Windsor tour started July 2 and runs until Aug. 2. They will be in West Toronto starting July 27. Performances are pay-what-youcan with a $20 suggested donation.

Toronto police 22 Division Supt. Shaun Narine, left, Const. Patty Retsinas, Det. Const. Patricia Featherstonhaugh and Const. Kim Litster-MacLeod are supporting this year’s Nicole’s Run benefit for missingkids.ca

Organizers hope Nicole’s Run will become an annual event >>>from page 1 In the three decades since that fateful day on July 30, 1985, police at 22 Division have continued to diligently investigate Nicole’s disappearance from her 627 The West Mall apartment building as an abduction. Throughout the years, they’ve steadfastly maintained that someone, somewhere knows what happened to Nicole – and that public awareness is the key to solving the decades-long mystery. “The simple fact is, folks have never given up hope that Nicole will return one day. We do have to be realistic, but we can’t give up hope,” 22 Division Supt. Shaun Narine said in an interview with The Guardian. “It’s been a long outstanding case – 30 years of active investigation and following up on leads...we want to find some resolve to it; some closure, at least, for the family; a conclusion to the case. Yes, it’s been 30 years, but as with any missing child, you never stop looking.” To those ends, officers from Narine’s south Etobicoke police detachment, with help from the Divisional Policing Suppor t Unit, will host Nicole’s Run – an awareness-raising memorial run and candlelight vigil to mark the 30th anniversary of Nicole’s disappearance – at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19

at Centennial Park. “I truly believe that if we create enough awareness with this event, that there is somebody out there who knows something and we’re going to get the information we need to find out what happened to Nicole – or even to find her,” said event co-organizer Const. Patty Retsinas. Ni c o l e’s Ru n , w h i c h Narine said he’s hoping will turn into an annual event to raise money for the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (www.missingkids.ca), will feature both a 5-km run and a 1-km walk, followed by the candlelight vigil. There will also be special guest speakers, DJ entertainment, visits from the Toronto Police motorcycle and mounted units, an onsite antique police truck, and an auction/draw for prizes. A family-friendly event, Retsinas said Nicole’s Run participants will also get the opportunity to race their favourite super heroes, as masked members of the Justice League Runners are slated to appear. “Our hope is that a lot of families come out and bring their kids,” said Retsinas, noting that younger participants are invited to run, walk or even ride their bicycles at the event. “We’ll also have resources to give to parents about how they can prevent something

like (Nicole’s abduction) from happening to their kids, and how to keep their kids safe.” Nicole’s case, said Const. Kim Litster-MacLeod, continues to resonate with so many people here in Toronto – and beyond – because it was one of the first cases in the city where a child was abducted so close to home. “It was one of the ones that kind of made people start to realize that maybe it’s not safe just to let your kids run around and play out in the yard without supervision,” she said. “Nicole’s neighbourhood was a very safe area at the time, and no one ever would have expected anything like that to happen there, so it really shook a lot of people. It struck home at a time when it was very common to just let your kids go and play.” As one of the investigators leading the search for answers in Nicole’s case, LitsterMacLeod said she and her police colleagues continue to receive and investigation all manner of tips. “...it’s all about keeping Nicole’s story in the public eye and making sure people continue to call us with any information they may have.” To register for the event, go to www.bit.ly/1I6oEWO – all those who sign up before July 26 will be guaranteed an event T-shirt.

OUT OF WORK? TOUGH LUCK. Hard times are about to get harder for Canada’s unemployed. Thanks to Harper’s Conservatives, thousands of Canadians who paid into Employment Insurance are being cut off from benefits, negatively impacting countless communities across Canada. This government is recklessly slashing essential public services, without regard for the rights and needs of all Canadians.

Woodbine casino plan ‘marks a new era for Rexdale’ says area councillor >>>from page 1 gambling – Toronto City Council voted 25-19 to support expanded gambling and future development at Woodbine, presently home to 2,700 slot machines. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. has proposed increasing the number of slot machines to 5,000, and adding 120 gaming tables, including blackjack and craps. OLG will conduct a search for an operator, which will need to comply with a long list of council-imposed conditions. Etobicoke North Ward 1 Councillor Vince Crisanti, a deputy mayor, headed the Woodbine file for Mayor John Tory. He said he is “very excited” by the vote. He called it a “huge win for Rexdale.” “It marks a new era for Rexdale,” Crisanti said of council decision. “It’s a turning point to attract the kind of development that will create those jobs that will open doors to tremendous opportunities, and create a premiere destination of international renown.” Crisanti stressed council’s endorsement includes conditions that Woodbine Entertainment Group, which runs the racetrack and casino, share its five-year plan and that it include an integrated entertainment complex and retail. Ji m L a w s o n , C E O o f Woodbine Entertainment Group, confirmed council’s decision is a boost for the horse racing industry, and will act as a catalyst for development. That development would be a significant entertainment complex, Lawson said. “Using the integrated entertainment complex as a catalyst and leveraging the already existing equine uses, our vision is for the Woodbine Racetrack site to become a Toronto destination for oneof-a-kind recreation and live entertainment,” Lawson wrote in a July 6 letter to city council. “A hub of indoor and outdoor events and festivities for all ages, as well as bestin-class restaurants and food experiences, Woodbine will become both a local gathering place and draw visitors all

over the GTA and beyond.” The broader entertainment complex cited in the deal with Woodbine, would include a live-event venue, retail, restaurants and a hotel. Toronto police Supt. Ron Taverner, unit commander of 23 Division, said he expects continued low levels of crime with Woodbine’s expansion. “Given the partnerships we have with Woodbine Entertainment on the corporate side, with the security people, and with our colleagues who work with the OPP there, we feel very confident Woodbine will maintain a very low level of any significant violence at all,” Taverner said. “There is probably more violence at shopping malls than at a place that attracts six-million people a year. Kudos to them.” Council’s decision further includes two proposals to create stable, sustainable jobs and much-needed supports for lower-income neighbourhoods, including those in north Etobicoke near Woodbine Racetrack at Hwy. 427 and Rexdale Boulevard. Employment at a future Woodbine casino and enter-

tainment complex would be stable, unionized jobs, the result of a groundbreaking labour peace agreement. City council endorsed Councillor Ana Bailao’s motion that the agreement compels whoever takes on the Woodbine project to enter into negotiations with hospitality-sector unions. The deal requests OLG and Woodbine “strive” to hire five per cent of people on social assistance who live in the area. Etobicoke North Ward 2 Councillor Rob Ford called expanded gaming at Woodbine “an opportunity that the City of Toronto cannot afford to pass up,” in a letter last month to the mayor’s executive committee. Steve Boon, acting executive director of MicroSkills, a north Etobicoke-based nonprofit organization committed to the appropriate training and gainful employment of youth, low-income women and newcomers, endorsed city council’s Woodbine decision. “Any kind of training we provide clients is a pathway to sustainable employment,” Boon explained of MicroSkills’ work. “It’s not just clients getting a job. It’s getting a job with career potential that allows them a sustainable life to provide for their families with appropriate shelter.”

The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the

Matthew Mahoney

This week’s Catch 22 most wanted is once again 21-year-old Matthew Mahoney. Mahoney is wanted by police in south Etobicoke’s 22 Division on six counts of fraud under $5,000, and six counts of uttering a forged document. Anyone who sees Mahoney is urged to call 911, while anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call 22 Division at 416808-2200, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), online at www.222tips.com or text TOR and your message to CRIMES

(274637). Catch 22 is a successful police program at 22 Division that publishes the name, picture and alleged crime of one of south Etobicoke’s most wanted. That information is then broadcast over both traditional and new medias each week in the hope that someone will recognize the accused and contact police with their whereabouts. For more information on the Catch 22 program, follow 22 Division on Facebook or @the22news on Twitter.

CONSUMER FEATURE

Parkbridge offers community, not just homes Parkbridge Lifestyle Communities Inc. has affordable move-in-ready and personalized homes available in its Wasaga Beach retirement communities. The commuities, Wasaga Meadows East, Country Meadows and Founders Village, offer quiet, secure neighbourhoods for people who have retired or are close to retirement. Parkbridge doesn’t just sell homes, it sells community and all the benefits of belonging to one. Residents are seen as long-term partners with a focus on contentment and happiness into and throughout retirement. This is why the homes are in ideal locations close to Wasaga Beach. When community members aren’t relaxing by the water, they can drive only a few minutes to go shopping or to local restaurants. Pools, community activities, recreation centres and clubs are available for active residents. The community

focuses on independent living, but lawn and snow removal are just some of the services offered. Many of the houses have two bedrooms, two bathrooms and open concept kitchens. They’re spacious, going up in size from 1,100 square feet. The homes are meant to help retirees downsize and spend more of their money on hobbies than on housing costs. The price of a Parkbridge home starts at $168,000, making it very affordable. Interested buyers can contact a sales centre to arrange a viewing. Options are flexible and include movein-ready homes, new homes built from scratch or homes that can be personalized and have been started. Starting from scratch takes about four to five months. For more information, call 705-429-8559 or visit www.parkbridge.com.

Nicole Tyrell, co-ordinator of the FoodShare markets, displays some of the fresh produce at the mobile food market earlier this month.

FoodShare mobile food market brings fresh fare to ‘food desert’ More local interest needed to keep service going: Stonegate’s Julia Graham CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Fresh fruits and vegetables will continue rolling into the Stonegate community this summer, courtesy of a market-on-wheels pilot program launched in a neighbourhood recently relegated to ‘food desert’ status. In collaboration with the Stonegate Community Health Centre (CHC), FoodShare Toronto has brought its Mobile Good Food Market to the southern Etobicoke community, which lost its only local grocer – a ValuMart at 150 Berry Rd. – to a wrecking ball last year as the site undergoes redevelopment. Julia Graham, Stonegate CHC’s community food program co-ordinator, said the mobile market is the latest of several food programs the health centre has launched in the Stonegate community since ValuMart closed its doors. “Without the grocery store in the neighbourhood... people here are needing an extra source of food nearby,” she said. “So, in our talks with

FoodShare, they agreed to pilot having their Mobile Good Food Market come out here to Stonegate. It’s a truck that travels to different locations around the city – it’s amazing; it’s incredible.” The FoodShare Mobile Good Food Market wheels its way into the Stonegate CHC parking lot at 150 Berry Rd. every Friday evening from 5 to 6:30 p.m., brimming with what FoodShare Toronto Executive Director Debbie Field described as “delicious, healthy, affordable and culturally appropriate” conventional produce sourced primarily from the Etobicoke-based Ontario Food Terminal. “Our mobile market has been going for three years – and it’s the first one in Canada,” she said. “The great news is that we’re able to bring food into communities, like Stonegate, that would not otherwise be able to, which is very exciting.” So f a r, Gra h a m s a i d feedback about the Mobile Good Food Market – which launched June 19 – has been good, but she’d like to see more local residents take advantage of the weekly market in order to secure the program longer-term. “It’s building in the area,” Graham said of market turnout thus far, “but it’s definitely good to let more people know about it, because FoodShare can only come if it’s sustain-

able on their end, as well.” In addition to the FoodShare Mobile Good Food Market, Stonegate CHC also facilitates a number of other food programs designed to fill the food gap in the local community, including: n the weekly Stonegate Farmers’ Market, which runs every Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. (until October) in the parking lot at Christ Church St. James, 194 Park Lawn Rd. The market features local conventional and organic produce, honey, bread, cheese, meats, etc. direct from local farmers and producers, as well as special events and activities throughout the season. n bi-weekly shuttle bus trips to the No Frills at The Queensway and Royal York Road, in partnership with Etobicoke Services for Seniors (ESS) Support Services. The shuttle, which runs every other Thursday morning, picks up and returns home seniors and those with mobility issues. n and last, but not least, the Good Food Box program, also in conjunction with FoodShare Toronto. It’s a non-profit fresh fruit and vegetable distribution system. Brimming with fresh, tasty produce, each box costs between $13 and $34, depending on the size and type of box ordered. For more information go to www.stonegatechc.org or call Graham at 416-231-7070 ext. 229.

Ford Fest headed to North York? MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com It’s been nearly a year since the last Ford Fest in Thomson Memorial Park, and Ford Nation’s been silent on when the party might return to Scarborough. Former mayoral candidate Doug Ford, however, says Ford Fest isn’t dead – and it may soon transplant itself to a new territory, North York. On Tuesday, he said the family was checking possible dates and locations and would make an announcement “probably in the next week.” Ford added he’s talked with younger brother Rob, former

Toronto mayor and current North Etobicoke councillor, about hosting Ford Fest in a new location. “Rob’s really itching to do it in North York.” Ford supporters were never shy before about promoting these annual parties for the public, which started, by their recollection, in Etobicoke backyard of the Ford family home in 1995. After Rob Ford became mayor, the Fords kept up the tradition until 2013, when, in an apparent nod to Ford’s strong Scarborough base, they first staged a Ford Fest at Thomson Park on Brimley Road. That event, offering free

Market

hamburgers, beer and T-shirts, drew thousands. The family’s decision to stage another last July 25, as Rob Ford was campaigning for reelection, drew complaints from many, but the Fords, insisting it was a family celebration and not a campaign event, got their city permit. They have also said the parties aren’t welcome any longer at the home of their mother, Diane Ford. The last Ford Fest so far was held in an Islington Avenue parking lot late last September, after Rob Ford had started cancer treatment and Doug Ford had taken his place as candidate for mayor.

Etobicoke trees celebrated in LEAF historic tree hunt LAURA DASILVA ldasilva@insidetoronto.com Two winners of the Great Toronto Tree Hunt are rooted in Etobicoke. LEAF launched a citywide challenge to find the most unique and evocative trees on Earth Day, and the contest culminated at the end of June. The not-for-profit community organization is dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the urban forest. “We actively engage residents through planting and education,” said program manager Melissa Williams. “We ran this contest to showcase how much Torontonians value trees.” Nearly 400 photo and essay nominations were submitted and judged

by the public and a panel of experts on either beauty, uniqueness, size, heritage potential or survival. One winner in each category was awarded a framed copy of their photograph and a $250 cash prize. Etobicoke’s Bonita Nelson garnered a win in the heritage potential category with her photo “First Remembrance Day.” She captured the six trees in front of Lambton Park Community School at Scarlett Road and St. Clair Avenue that stand strong with family history. “My siblings and I attended the school, and it’s where my mother and father met,” Nelson said. The trees were planted on Nov. 11, 1919, the first Remembrance Day, to honour local soldiers who lost their

lives in the First World War. While the story behind the trees captured judges’ attention in Nelson’s case, sheer magnitude led Mimico’s Eric Vanderwal to earn first place in the size category. He photographed an enormous silver maple on Superior Avenue near Royal York Road and Lake Shore Boulevard. Measuring just over two metres across, the trunk of the behemoth deemed “Titan” almost eclipses the bungalow behind it. “I thought the size was incredibly impressive,” Vanderwal said. “I had been out taking photos of other trees, and upon returning home my mom asked if I’d been over to Elma Avenue. She believed it to be the largest one

Bay. He familiarized himself with trees native to Ontario and North America and now enjoys planting his own. “I really wanted to recreate that environment in the city to make it feel more like an oasis,” he said. “I don’t get to spend as much time there as I used to.” Vanderwal said the Tree Hunt causes people to pause and think about the natural wonders speckling Toronto. “People who may not have paid much mind to trees come upon newfound interest and appreciation after learning about the interesting histories behind them,” he said.

Repairs and cleanup of Toronto’s public housing announced Mayor Tory announced nearly $400 million found through mortgage refinancing

DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Mayor John Tory’s task force looking to reform Toronto’s public housing company has found a way to pour millions of dollars into repairs using mortgage refinancing, and is also calling for an aggressive cleanup of the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) in areas of safety, cleanliness and employment opportunities for residents there. The task force, headed by Liberal Senator Art Eggleton, released its interim report on housing Wednesday, July 15 at a Regent Park news conference, and kicked it off with good financial news: the task force has been able to find $171 million this year and $200 million in 2016, simply by refinancing mortgages on various TCHC buildings. That was thanks to a new federal program designed to take the sting out of financial penalties on mortgage financing. The repair backlog is one of a litany of problems faced by the city-owned housing company, which is waiting on an approved but notyet-funded plan to put $2.6 billion in repairs to buildings over the next decade. First recommendation

Gathering the rest of that funding from other levels of government is the first of seven recommendations in the interim report. The report also recommends developing an “action plan” on increased safety and security; another plan on improving building conditions; a plan to provide more job opportunities for residents; improve training

We expect immediate action. These Action Plans need to come forward within 60 days. The deadline is a serious one, and I would expect that it be met. – Mayor John Tory

TCHC staff and contractors; creating a residents’ charrette; and hiring a chief operating officer. Tory said he expects that the TCHC board will move on those items within 60 days. “We expect immediate action,” he said. “These Action Plans need to come forward within 60 days. The deadline is a serious one, and I would expect that it be met. We collectively, me as the mayor and I’m sure the members of city council, intend to see some action and measurable improvements happening before the end of the year.” Legislative changes He highlighted some points that he thought deserved emphasis. First, Tory said he wants to see legislative changes that will make it easier to evict convicted drug dealers from TCHC housing. “Public housing is something made available by our community,” he said. “For people to use that privilege and that service we provide to each other, to deal drugs, and thus put in peril the safety and security of other people...to me, that means you forfeit the right to live there.” Tory said he also wanted to see greater transparency at the TCHC, particularly

The recommendations in the task force’s interim report will help guide our efforts ... We look forward to real progress in the next six months. – TCHC interim CEO Greg Spearn

on matters such as elevator breakdowns, which can paralyze a community living in a highrise. Tory said the TCHC needs to refocus on its mandate; over the past four years it has been rocked by spending scandals in the upper echelons, and hirings and firings of senior staff. ‘Political intrigue’ “For too many years this corporation has been taken up with political intrigue, hirings and firings,” he said. “When that’s going on, you can’t be focussed on getting the fundamentals right.” TCHC interim CEO and president Greg Spearn said the organization would take the recommendations to heart and deliver plans within the timeframe. “The recommendations in the task force’s interim report will help guide our efforts,” he said. “Wherever we can reallocate resources to achieve results we will. As a matter of fact, we have a board meeting on July 29 where we will give an interim verbal report. We look forward to real progress in the next six months and a final report in December.” That report will focus on governance of the housing company.

transit

Leslie Barns facility delayed again

W h e n t h e i r ga m e s e n d, ours begin.

The Pan Am and Parapan Am Games leave behind community programs and new facilities. Like the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, which is a great place to perfect your dives. Or your cannonball.

The Leslie Barns maintenance and storage facility for the TTC’s new streetcar fleet is delayed yet again. Leslie Street was supposed to have re-opened in July, delayed from June after a private contractor’s error required the concrete track bed from Commissioners Street to Queen Street to be torn up and rebuilt. The problem is now fixed but more time was needed for the project’s engineering contractor to review final designs for the work which TTC spokesperson Brad Ross termed as more complicated than usual because of technical requirements. Leslie Street is now slated to re-open next month, but the facility won’t open until late September – if there’s no further delay.

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT Members of the transit advocacy group went to the UP station at Toronto Pearson airport last Thursday to count the number of morning rushhour passengers using the four-stop premium transit line. They claim to have spotted just an average of 14 people using the service over a two-hour period, which works out to eight per cent of total capacity per train. Metrolinx reported recently ridership is at 3,250 passengers a day, in line with its first-year projections for UP which began running in early June. It’s projecting 2.5 million annual UP customers over the long-term, enough to recover day-to-day costs.

OF UP EXPRESS RIDERS CONFLICTING wNUMBER NEW STREETCARS HIT TORONTO TRACKS wSEVEN Metrolinx may be touting early ridership numbers for the pricey Union Pearson Express as being promising, but TTCriders isn’t convinced.

For the first time, seven new streetcars were in service as of last week, the TTC reported. Production issues with

manufacturer Bombardier has meant a slow trickle of the sleek new rides, 204 of which are supposed to replace the existing fleet within five years. A revised production schedule by Bombardier promises 27 of the new vehicles will be in the TTC’s possession by the end of the year. SUBWAY STARTS on sunday CONSIDERED wEARLY

This upcoming Sunday will be the last scheduled early opening for the subway as the Pan Am Games come to a close. For the past two Sundays, trains have started operating at 6 a.m., three hours earlier than usually scheduled to help transport Games spectators. While the TTC claims it needs the three hours to get the trains ready for regular 9 a.m. service, it is looking into options for speeding up that needed work to allow for consistent early openings.
