NASCAR driver fuels funds for school Dave Connelly and Fortino’s help raise more than $2.5K for St. Benedict kids CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com NASCAR driver Dave Connelly revved his fundraising engine for St. Benedict Catholic School this week – raising more than $2,500 for students at the north Etobicoke elementary school through his Fuel for Kids program. Now in its 11th year, Connelly’s Fuel for Kids program sees the 15-year veteran of the professional racing circuit visit with and host all-expense-paid barbecue fundraisers for local schools handpicked by his major sponsor, Fortino’s. “Basically, it’s a fundraiser in a box for school parent councils and teachers. We supply all the food, the tents, the barbecue, and we even bring the race car, but it’s up to the school to get everyone out, to promote it, and to sell those hot dogs,” Connelly explained. “Our sponsors donate all the product, so that every nickel we sell goes back to the school.” At St. Benedict, the $2,500 raised during the May 28 Fuel for Kids barbecue at the Fortino’s at Hwy. 27 and Queen’s Plate, will be used to help purchase more tablets for student use. “We’re big on technology, so we’re hoping to get more iPads and netbooks for the students,” said Principal

Tony Martire, noting that the school currently boasts nearly 90 netbooks. In Fuel for Kids’ decadelong history, Connelly said the fundraisers have so far raised upwards of a quarter of a million dollars – and, as of last week, has now raised $12,500 for schools in just the first week of its 2015 program (including the $2,500 raised for St. Benedict). As a prelude to St. Benedict’s “phenomenal” fundraiser, Connelly met with all 640 students in the schoolyard last Thursday afternoon, and spent an hour showcasing his race car – a cherry red 2014 Dodge Challenger emblazoned with the number 82 on its side – and all of his safety gear. As the Grades 1 through 8 students ‘ooohed and aaahed’ over the $125,000 car, Connelly proceeded to list off the costs of keeping it on the racetrack at top speeds of 195 miles/hour: $1,000 per set of four tires, which only last about an hour on the race

course; $1,700 for each set of brakes, which have to be replaced after every race; $600 in fuel an hour on race day; and a $30,000 motor which has to be pulled out and “torn apart” after every eight hours of drive time. Connelly also displayed for the students all of the safety gear he wears while driving – from his $3,000 state-ofthe-art helmet and his Nomex fire suit, to his light-weight, heat-shielded driving boots and the special T-shirt he

wears on race day, which is sewn through with cold-water pumping plastic tubes to keep his body temperature regulated in the “oven-like” heat of his car. “Today, I taught the kids a little bit about the sport and the safety gear I wear, so that when they watch racing on TV and they see us hitting things and crashing, they know why we’re safe and how it is we’re walking away,” Connelly said in an interview, shortly after telling the St. Benedict stu-

dents he’s had two major crashes in his 15-year career as a race car driver. To cap off his presentation, Connelly donned his helmet, revved his car into roaring action, and spun ‘donuts’ in the St. Benedict parking lot, while waving to students as they watched from the fenced-in yard. The whole experience was one Principal Martire said his students won’t soon forget. “It’s an exciting day,” he said. “As soon as the car showed up, the kids were all pumped. I like these kinds of opportunities to expose kids to something they wouldn’t normally wouldn’t see.”

Future of Gardiner Expressway should not be taken lightly

Write us

S

hould it stay? Should it go? When it comes to the Gardiner Expressway, it appears everyone has something to say. The future of the muchdebated Gardiner is coming up at Toronto City Council’s monthly meeting June 10. After much discussion about which option is best – besides doing ‘nothing’ – the two options left standing are the ‘hybrid’ option – re-configuring the expressway, basically – and the ‘removal’ option, which would tear down the entire portion east of Jarvis Street creating an eight-lane, ground-level boulevard. Factions have come down on both sides: The Toronto Region Board of Trade is on the hybrid side of things as is Mayor John Tory, whose SmartTrack plan plays into this option with a major transit hub proposed for a newly developed 49 acres of land, some public our view some private. On Monday, former Toronto The time to act mayor David Crombie together with the city’s former city planon Gardiner ner said tearing it down is the is now right decision. Also on Monday, the Toronto Board of Health decided not to send to council the report by Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown that stated removal would provide the most health benefits. And of course councillors also fall on different sides of the debate, as do Torontonians after they were given the chance to weigh in on the issue during meetings over the last several months. According to a recent poll by Mainstreet Technologies, 45 per cent of respondents prefer the removal option versus 33 per cent who chose the hybrid option. After all is said and done, it’s time for council to put its money where its mouth is and decide on what exactly to do with the expressway. Its future is something that must be decided – not just for now, but for the estimated 100-year lifecycle of either of the main options on the table. Councillors should decide what’s best for the city and stick to it. And if possible, find a way to make sure future councils don’t fiddle with it like they have for decades on the public transit file. Transportation as a whole in Toronto is a complex issue. It doesn’t matter whether you’re talking public transit or highways. If the Gardiner decision is well-balanced, perhaps transportation in Toronto stands a chance.

column

Tory puts stamp on Toronto Board of Health

I

t’s a wonder nobody thought of it sooner. For years, the Toronto Board of Health has been a prickly ball of left-of-centre conscience that regularly rolls into more, shall we say, pragmatically conservative debates at Toronto council. Part of this is because of the mandate of the board, and the city’s health department – to exclusively concern itself with the health and wellbeing of Torontonians. Part of this is because for many years, mayors and their deputies have left the city council appointments to the generally progressive councillors who ask to serve on the board. So it has been that when a medical officer of health has suggested that pesticides ought to be banned or smoking in public places curtailed or casino gambling is a bad idea, the board members have obe-

david nickle the city diently and enthusiastically sent that information on to city council – where it might be disregarded, but cannot be ignored. You would have thought that mayors in the past would have done something about it. Well, maybe not David Miller who generally found himself in agreement with the pearl-clutchers at public health – but certainly Mel Lastman and Rob Ford ought to have realized that this finger-wagging fifth column needed attention. Leave it to Mayor John Tory and his deputy Denzil Minnan-Wong to finally take note, and action. Through a combination of public and city council appointments, the 20142018 Toronto Board of Health is shaping up to be

a very different beast. How different? Let’s see. On Monday, the board had before it a report from Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown, weighing in on – what else? – the Gardiner Expressway debate. Mayor Tory as you may know favours an expensive and controversial plan to rebuild the elevated highway where it connects to the Don Valley Parkway. In a fairly cursory report, Dr. McKeown joined various planning and city-building experts in suggesting that was a bad idea. In the last term, that report would have made its way promptly to council, and it’s not hard to see how: the councillors on the board were Ford opponents such as Raymond Cho, John Filion, Joe Mihevc, Gord Perks, Sarah Doucette and Kristyn Wong-Tam. Cue the replacements

this term, where a much smaller progressive rump of Joe Cressy, Mihevc and Doucette are joined by Jon Burnside, Christin Carmichael Grebb and Frances Nunziata – along with a new crew of citizen appointees. It’s not a total political shift, but it was enough, along with a few of the board’s citizen appointees, to deep-six that awkward report. The board agreed to send it along to the planning department. But when council debates the Gardiner at its June meeting, the awkward opinion of Toronto’s Chief Medical Officer of Health will be off the table. Someone in the new administration has been paying attention. David Nickle is The Guardian’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Find him on Twitter: @ DavidNickle

efore radio, before television, there was vaudeville. And this ivy-covered cottage that once stood at 12 Connorvale Ave. in Alderwood was the home of the famous O’Connor Sisters who sang on the North American vaudeville circuit from 1910 to 1937. Their grandparents, John and Johanna O’Connor, arrived from Ireland in 1851 and by 1866 were farming over 80 hectares of land on the west side of Brown’s Line, between Horner Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard West. In 1878, John bought this house on Connorvale for his eldest son, John Jr., who married Ellen O’Leary in 1879. The house had been built by William Lafferty in the 1850s in the “Regency Cottage” style, with stone walls three feet thick, a low-

Police, child protection agency urge tips on missing children’s cases

Parents offered advice on how to educate their children to be safe, at any age cynthia reason safe in the city

E

very year, police across the country receive m o re t h a n 4 0 , 0 0 0 reports of missing Canadian children. On International Missing Children’s Day recently, Toronto police teamed up with the Canadian Centre for Child Protection to not only remind the public just how vital its assistance is when a child first goes missing, but also to stress how important it is to keep missing children’s stories in the public eye – no matter how long since they disappeared. “The reality is that someone out there knows something about these disappearances, and we all have a responsibility to do everything we can to help bring a child home,” Christy Dzikowicz, director of Missing Children Services at the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, said in a statement. Any information can help, and may, in fact, prove to be the key piece of evidence police need to solve historic disappearances – cases such as the decades-long searches for Etobicoke’s Nicole Morin, who went missing from her West Mall apartment in 1985, and Richard Marlow, whose mysterious disappearance from Beta Street in south Etobicoke nearly 71 years ago makes his the oldest file on the Canadian Centre for Child Protection’s database of more than 100 missing children. “It is our hope that, on this day of hope and optimism, we would get the one piece of information we need to solve our historic cases,” Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders said in a statement to mark International Missing Children’s Day. To t h o s e e n d s, b o t h Saunders and Dzikowicz urged all Torontonians

Police and the Canadian Centre for Child Protection want the public to know that tips can help solve historic missing children’s cases, like that of Etobicoke’s Richard Marlow (left), who disappeared from Beta Street in south Etobicoke nearly 71 years ago, and Nicole Morin, who went missing from her West Mall apartment in 1985.

to join in the search for Canada’s missing children by viewing the database at MissingKids.ca and signing up for the Missing Kids Alert at www.missingkidsalert.ca and by sharing any and all information they may have about a missing child’s case with local police or by calling 1-866-KID-TIPS (1-866-5438477). PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN With the recent marking of International Missing Children’s Day, it’s imperative to remind parents of some of the measures that can be taken to help protect their child from possible abduction. According to the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, while stranger abductions are rare (of the 41,035 children reported missing in 2013, only 33 were reported as a stranger abduction) they are also the

most difficult to predict – and therefore to prevent. “But by teaching children basic personal safety skills, parents will give them the tools needed to reduce their likelihood of being victimized. Children who learn to be assertive, and how to recognize and respond safely to potentially dangerous situations, are less likely to be targeted by an offender,” the Centre reports, quoting a 2004 Canadian study that high-

lighted the types of situations in which children are deemed more susceptible to stranger abduction, including: n 38 per cent of attempted abductions occur while a child is walking alone to or from school, riding the school bus or riding a bicycle; n 37 per cent of attempted abductions occur between the hours of 2 and 7 p.m. on weekdays; n 43 per cent of attempted abductions involve children between the ages of 10 and 14; n and 68 per cent of attempted abductions involve a suspect driving a vehicle. With those statistics in mind, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection suggests some of the following ageappropriate prevention tips for parents: 1) For children aged four to six: n teach your child active resistance skills — this means

shouting, kicking, biting or screaming if anyone physically tries to take them somewhere. Use the slogan “If asked to go and your parents don’t know, SHOUT NO!” 2) For children aged seven and eight: n teach your child to trust their instincts and that if anyone makes them feel uncomfortable, they must immediately come talk to you. n keep a very close eye on your child while out in public, especially in busy places like amusement parks and shopping centres, where it’s easier to lose sight of your child. Be sure to discuss a safety plan with your child for what they should do if they become separated from you. 3) For children aged nine to 11: n at this age, children should be taught about how to stay safe when they are at home alone, including:

keeping the doors of the house locked; not opening the door or letting anyone in the house; not letting anyone know that you will be home alone; making sure all emergency and contact numbers are placed by the telephone. n frequently go through possible scenarios with your child involving different types of lures an adult might use to gain their trust – including offering gifts, asking for help, saying there is an emergency, claiming to be an authority figure, using flattery, etc. 4) For children aged 12 to 13: n teach your child to anticipate potentially dangerous situations by using “what if” scenarios such as “What if someone came up to you, said you were pretty, claimed to be a modeling agent and wanted you to come with them?” n if your child wants to meet an online friend in person, arrange to speak with the parent of the online friend to make plans for the children to meet with both of you present. 5) For children aged 14 and up: n continue to teach your child the importance of using the “buddy system” when they go out for the evening with friends and ensure they have a transportation plan in place to get home safely after an evening out. n ask your teen to text you when they arrive at their destination, change plans, or decide to stay over at a friend’s house. #No2Trudeau flyers challenge leader’s stance on abortion >>>from page 1 mailbox, and I wouldn’t want my child to see something like this. What if a sevenyear-old saw this? If this was a movie, it would be classified as ‘restricted’. “It’s the most offensive piece of material I’ve ever had delivered to my door, on my private property. Whether I’m pro- or antiabortion, this is not the way to go about it.” Effective or not, the Wong household is just one of more than a million homes located in 20 “strategic” ridings across the country selected by Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) Youth and the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform (CCBR) to have the controversial ‘postcards’ hand-delivered by election day on Oct. 15. Alissa Golob, executive director of CLC Youth, said the postcards are just one part of a multi-pronged #No2Trudeau campaign initiated earlier this year by the two pro-life organizations – a campaign that included a two-month, nine-province, cross-country speaking tour launched in March and aimed at “revitalizing the pro-life base and rebuilding the pro-life consensus.” “(It’s) in response to Justin Trudeau’s proclamation last May that no pro-lifer is allowed to run for the Liberal Party of Canada and that any pre-existing pro-life Liberal MP must vote prochoice on any bills,” Golob said of #No2Trudeau, which she touts as the largest prolife campaign of its kind in Canada’s history. “People talk about being pro-choice – most especially Justin Trudeau – but they never actually talk about what is being chosen. These postcards really finish that sentence, because they show the choice that happens with the choice of abortion. On the postcard, it’s a picture of a first trimester abortion, which is when the majority of abortions happen in Canada. Many people wrongly believe that (abortion at that point) does not kill a baby or that the baby hasn’t developed yet, but these pictures clearly

show that that isn’t true.” Etobicoke’s mailboxes weren’t the only place local residents were exposed to images of aborted fetuses this week, either. According to social media reports, pro-life protesters bearing placards with photos similar to those found on the #No2Trudeau postcards picketed Lake Shore Boulevard West between Islington and Kipling Avenues on Tuesday afternoon. The Guardian was unable to verify whether the protesters were linked to the CLC Youth- and CCBR-led #No2Trudeau campaign. When asked about the #No2Trudeau flyers in mid-May, shortly after they showed up in hundreds of mailboxes in Mississauga, Trudeau defended his prochoice position. “I am perfectly comfortable with Canadians knowing that the Liberal Party is unequivocal in its defence of women’s rights,” he told reporters in Ottawa. “We are the party of the Charter. We are the party that stands up for people’s rights. We will continue to do so.” While the use of the graphic imagery on the #No2Trudeau postcards hasn’t sat well with many residents, Golob said CLC Youth and CCBR are simply following in the footsteps of organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the Holocaust Museum in using shocking images to “shake the conscience of the public.” Wong, however, thinks the #No2Trudeau postcards, with their disturbing imagery, may prove counter-productive to the campaign’s cause. “Whether you’re proor anti-abortion, it’s their shock mentality that creates a backlash and makes you hate them,” she said of the postcards. “Whether I am pro- or anti-abortion, Liberal or Conservative is not the issue. This is hate propaganda and someone needs to be held accountable.” – with a file from TorStar News Service

The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners like Anita P. don’t see a prob-

lem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

Prearrangement doesn’t have to cost anything. What many people don’t know is that you need not prepay when you prearrange. We’re happy to record your wishes and hold them on file at no charge. Call our funeral home for details.

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85-Alive” program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 per cent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Summer is finally here!

hildren are enjoying the warm weather, fun activities with friends and vacation time. But summer can also be an enjoyable learning experience. The summer break provides many memorable moments, and writing about them is a good way to record those memories and practice writing skills at the same time. Parents tend to focus on their children’s reading and math skills, overlooking that writing is an education fundamental. It’s fast becoming the forgotten ‘R’. This is unfortunate, as writing is an important part of every facet of education, not just in English class. Writing proficiency can have a major impact on other subject areas too. Summer vacation provides an excellent opportunity for children to explore their creative writing skills. Sylvan Learning, the leading provider of tutoring at home to students of all ages, grades and skill levels, has developed the following tips to help parents encourage their children to write over the summer:

Pick an Engaging Topic Persuading your child to write over the summer break may be easier if you help them identify fun and engaging topics. Suggest timely subjects. • For example, Canada Day on July 1 is a good opportunity for your children to explore their own patriotism. • Ask them if they know what patriotism is, and what it means to them. Encourage your children by helping them with some research about Canada, its history, people and places. Give Story Starters Sometimes the most difficult part of writing can be getting started. Help your children write their patriotic essays by giving them topic ideas, such as: • I am proud to be Canadian because…. • On July 1, my family and I usually… • If someone asked me what my country means to me, I would say… Sylvan Tips on Writing • Good writing takes time. Spend time organizing your

ideas and thinking about what you really want to say in your essay. • Use the Internet or library to research your topic. • Prepare an outline before you begin to write. • Use transition words – such as “after,” “although,” “before,” “however” and “therefore” to help your ideas flow together. • Be willing to revise. Change your sentences and paragraphs around, add material that lends to your writing and delete material that doesn’t work. • Avoid clichés and jargon. • Always keep a dictionary handy to help with spelling. • Use a thesaurus to help you think of a new way to say something. • Ask someone else to edit your work. • Proofread everything. Make sure grammar, spelling and punctuation are perfect before you declare anything “finished.” • Don’t rely on a computer’s spellchecker to ensure proper spelling.

For additional educational resources for children in grades pre-primary through 12, please visit www.SylvanLearning.com or call (416) 407-5083.

West-enders pedal toward a cure during Ride to Conquer Cancer LAURA DASILVA ldasilva@insidetoronto.com Armoured with bike helmets, thousands of road warriors are gearing up for an epic two-day fight against cancer. Cyclists, survivors and supporters will come together for the eighth annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14. Funds raised from the 200-kilometre journey between Toronto and Niagara will benefit the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Over the last seven years, the Ontario ride has raised more than $119-million for cancer research across the province, and has become the largest cycling event in Canadian history. According to Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) statistics, two out of five Canadians will be diagnosed with the cancer in their lifetime. Local participants are ready to put their physical and emotional strength toward finding a cure. Etobicoke automotive salesman Mark Teplycky will be shifting focus from four wheels to two as he embarks on his fifth ride.

chance now,” Teplycky said. Personalized Cancer Medicine is this year’s research focus. “Treating two people with the same type of cancer in the same way will not necessarily yield the best results,” said Steve Merker, vice-president of business development and chief cycling officer at the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, in an email. “We are committed to a future of individualized treatments.” Funds will go toward personalized genetic testing, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and adoptive T-cell therapy. Though many ride participants will be cycling in honour of loved ones they have lost in the past, Bloor West resident Matthew Madigan will be riding for the future. Madigan, participating for the second time, said his four-yearold daughter, Kate, has completely changed his perspective. He said he feels a responsibility to help her generation. “The fact that I can make her tomorrow better than today is very invigorating,” Madigan said. “When you go through this event, you’re compelled by individual sto-

During the 2014 Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, more than 5,000 participants raised a record $20-million for the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

“It’s as much about the personal challenge as it is the fundraising,” he said. He hopes to bump up the $16,000 he’s raised over the last four years to $20,000. Teplycky lost his 79-year-old grandmother, Jenny, to acute myel-

oid leukemia (AML) in 2005. He said he wishes she had access to some of the customizable treatments available now, thanks to recent breakthroughs. “People 10 years ago, who may have had a terminal outlook on their disease, would have a fighting

ries, and hear how close we may be,” he said. “I’m certain, in my lifetime, we’ll see a cure, and that will benefit her lifetime.” Madigan will be riding as part of the 34-member Bloor West Village Idiots team. There is nothing idiotic about the $500,000 the community team has raised over the past eight years. Both Teplycky and Madigan have teammates and family members struggling with cancer. It’s not surprising since 520 Canadians are diagnosed every day, according to CCS statistics. “Princess Margaret is one of the top cancer research hospitals in the world. The fact that we have that in Toronto, and can directly support them, is a great thing for Canadians,” Madigan said. Happy 65th Wedding anniversary Mary and John Sudak are off to the races to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. Married on June 3, 1950 at the Dawes Road Gospel Church in Toronto, an article written about the event stated, “the bride wore a white satin gown with fitted bodice and full skirt. Her fingertip veil fell from a coronet of seed pearls, and she carried a cascade of deep pink roses, sweet peas and lily-of-the-valley.” The retired Etobicoke couple, who have called their Tandridge Crescent home for more than 50 years, will enjoy an afternoon with friends and family at Woodbine Racetrack Saturday, June 6. The Sudak’s five children, 12 grandchildren and nine grandchildren will be in attendance to honour the couple. CONSUMER FEATURE

Helping others is how Mueller lived his life: longtime friend >>>from page 1 rings, a diamond ring. No one else would do that,” said Pavlov, Mueller’s close friend for more than a decade. Pavlov created an Indiegogo page in his friend’s memory to add to a “scrapbook” of remembrances for his son William, six. Mueller, a High Park area resident, was struck by a vehicle and critically injured on Saturday, May 16 at 3:25 a.m. as he crossed Bloor Street West at Indian Road. He battled to survive for nine days in St. Michael’s Hospital’s trauma unit. He died May 24. He was 43. Last Saturday, William stood beside his mother, Denise, as she delivered her husband’s eulogy at his funeral attended by approximately 200 mourners. “William is a bright, social boy. He loves Batman, and the outdoors. He’s very considerate, kind, charming,” Pavlov said. “William is always smiling. Even in these circumstances, he’s still thriving.” David Clement, Pavlov and Mueller’s friend, created the ‘In Memory of Craig Mueller’ Indiegogo page to raise $10,000 for William’s future post-secondary education. To date, it has raised $2,840. “Craig was always positive, looking for selfless ways to continue to help make whatever the situation was better. He was always so caring and helpful to others,” Clement said. But the Indiegogo campaign is about more than the funds. Pavlov said he plans to print online messages of support and condolence to create a scrapbook for William “so he knows who his Dad was,” he said. Mueller’s kindness and generosity were among his defining traits, Pavlov said. It was that personality that drew approximately 2,000 people to pay their respects at his viewing, his friend said. “Craig had a very, very big, generous personality,” Pavlov said of his friend who loved touring on his silver Harley Davidson motorcycle. “He was very engaging and charming. Everyone enjoyed his com-

pany. He came without an agenda.” Lending a hand is how Mueller lived his life. “Craig would never say no if anyone needed help. Whether someone needed a place to stay, a small loan, help moving. Anything he could do, he would do,” Pavlov said. “He was one of those guys who contributed to the fabric of the city. He was a very good parent. He had an established business. He was at the peak of his life. Everything seemed to be going in the right direction.” Mueller was owner and partner of The Gem Gallery Jewellers and Estate Purchasers on Bloor Street West just west of Royal York Road. He also designed jewelry. “So many people said to me at the funeral, ‘He made me this jewelry piece. I can’t believe how hard he worked to perfect the piece. He made sure we got everything we wanted.’” It was customary for Mueller to loan complete strangers a piece of jewelry to ensure they liked it before buying it, Pavlov said. “Craig was always trying to do the greatest good for the greatest number of people,” he said. That generosity extended beyond Mueller’s life. His family donated his organs. His lungs and a kidney went to people in need of transplants.

“He had made that decision. Helping other people is what he wanted to do,” Pavlov said of Mueller. Pavlov knows well the intersection where his friend was struck. He said he was hit by a vehicle crossing the same intersection five years ago. He sustained a broken leg. His German Shepherd broke a hip. “It’s a very, very wide section of Bloor,” Pavlov said of the intersection at Indian Road, one traffic signal east of Keele Street. “You can’t remind people enough to be cautious crossing the road. It doesn’t matter what the signal says or what time of day it is.” Mueller was the twenty-third person in Toronto to die in a traffic collision this year. This Sunday at 9 p.m., a 39-year-old woman was struck and killed in a hit-and-run while attempting to cross Bloor Street West, west of Dovercourt Road. A 30-year-old woman was struck by a van May 20 in the mid-afternoon as she crossed High Park Avenue at Annette Street. She survived. “Anytime we lose one individual it is a concern,” Toronto police Const. Clint Stibbe said. “These collisions are completely preventable. In most cases, the collision is caused by an error on somebody’s part.” Anyone with information about these incidents is urged to call police at 416-8081900. Mueller moved to the High Park area because he loved the outdoors and being near water, Pavlov said. He and his son’s favourite pastime was fishing. “Anywhere there’s water, he and William would pull out their fishing rods. He fished with his father. Now he was sharing that passion with his son,” he said. Mueller leaves his wife, Denise, son, William, parents, Willi and Rosemarie, siblings Maureen, Fiona, Michelle and Paul, and 12 nieces and nephews.

Munro in Jr. worlds Etobicoke’s Connor Munro has been selected to play in one of the world’s signature events for youth golfers – the IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championships July 14-17 in San Diego. The 12-year-old Kingsway College student, who lives in the Kingsway/Sunnylea community in Etobicoke, is one of only five players selected from across Canada in his

11/12 division. A junior member at historic Weston Golf and Country Club, Munro tees it up on the Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) Tour in the bantam (under 15 years old) division and so far this young season he’s currently listed as seventh on their national order of merit. Two-way traffic returns to Queen’s Quay

BUY & SELL IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD! Download Tradyo

tradyo.com

EASY TO POST Just take a picture of what you are selling and you are pretty much done!

Two-way traffic is returning to the Queen’s Quay as the revamped roadway gets ready to re-open. Starting this week new traffic signals will operate at several intersections along Queen’s Quay between Bay Street to west of Lower Spadina Avenue which will allow for the return of two-way traffic to the street. The road, which was once referred to as one of North America’s ugliest, has been under construction since 2013 and has undergone a topto-bottom facelift, including widened sidewalks, relocated streetcar lanes and a new red granite pedestrian promenade. The transitions are expected to take until Wednesday, June 10 to complete and will also include new transit signals for the 509 Harbourfront service. UNVEILS its NEW LAKESHORE TRAINS wGO

GO Transit unveiled its newlook train cars in Mimico this week which will help boost service on the Lakeshore West

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT line. Over the next two years 127 new cars are expected to join GO’s fleet with improvements scheduled to begin this summer. Part of the plan to increase service is building a new storage facility for the trains in south Etobicoke which, according to the Ministry of Transportation, will provide enough space for six, 12-car trains. TICKET SALES OFFERED FOR UP ride wONLINE

The Union Pearson (UP) Express air rail link is about to launch and before the inaugural trip Saturday, June 6 you can purchase a ticket online. According to Metrolinx, tickets purchased online can be redeemed for up to a year from the date they were bought. You can also buy tickets at station vending machines or if you prefer human contact,

from service counters located at Union Station and Toronto Pearson Airport. It costs $19 for a one-way trip on the four-stop route between Union and Pearson if you have a Presto Card. DRIVER FINES, POINTS go up wDISTRACTED

Higher fines and demerit points for distracted drivers are part of new road safety legislation passed this week by the Ontario Legislature. The new regulations are a hold-over from the previous term. They include upping distracted driving fines to a minimum of $300 as well as three demerit points. Also for the first time, drivers who open their car doors in the path of an unsuspecting cyclist, also known as “dooring”, will face demerit points in addition to higher fines. The new restrictions are expected to be in place before the end of 2015. Rahul Gupta is The Guardian’s transit reporter. His column appears every Thursday. Find him on Twitter: @TOinTRANSIT
