Homeowner reels over $19K lien Ontario Green Solutions president aims to “get half that money back” after Frances Clarke signs door-to-door contract TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Frances Clarke gets upset every time she thinks about the letter from Skymark Finance Corporation to her real estate lawyer reporting its nearly $19,000 lien on her recently sold Etobicoke home. The amount of the lien is the value of the 10-year contract she signed. Skymark is the financial arm of Ontario Green Solutions (OGS), an Etobicoke-based company which leases water softeners, and sells American Standard high-efficiency furnaces and air conditioners. In November 2015, OGS’s representatives knocked on the door of her Seventeenth Street home and sold Clarke, 69, a retired widow on a fixed income, a contract to lease a water softener and carbon filter at $79.99 each per month. Clarke said the OGS salesperson told her the equipment would save her money on her monthly heating and hydro >>>ontario, page 8

Noise complaints could muffle tribute Residents demand removel of musical equipment from park dedicated to guitarist Jeff Healey CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Complaints about late night noise have prompted city officials to consider removing recently installed musical equipment from an Etobicoke park named after late great blues guitarist Jeff Healey. “We will begin with maybe removing the noisiest equipment, hear back from (residents), and if it’s still a problem, then ultimately remove it all,” Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Justin Di Ciano said at a community meeting to discuss the noise concerns last week. “Then we’ll have to figure out, with community consultation, what other things we can do in the park to showcase what Jeff Healey was all about.” Despite widespread media coverage drawing much attention to the issue over the last few weeks, Di Ciano’s meeting at St. Mark Catholic School drew a mere 15 people – only a handful of them local residents, the rest city staff and Toronto police representatives. Among the few residents in attendance, however, opposition to the musical equipment was clear. Natasha Urosavic threatened legal action should the city not act to remedy the noise emanating from the xylophone-like structures and drums at the park behind her house late at night. She came to the meeting armed with a petition signed by a dozen neighbours who she said likewise object to the instruments. “This is not nice music, this is noise. This is noise that nobody can stand, and it’s late at night,” said Urosavic, noting that she’s been awoken many times at 2 or 3 a.m. by teens partying in the park and causing a “terrible” commotion on the equipment using sticks and rocks. “This is not about Jeff Healey – we’ve heard about him and we admire him. It’s about my family and the health of my family. “I understand Jeff Healey grew up in the area, and that’s fine. But that doesn’t mean that other people

Residents have been complaining about noise coming from the newly installed musical play equipment in Jeff Healey Park, which the City of Toronto is considering removing.
need to suffer because of it,” she added. “And I don’t think, the great person that Jeff Healey was, that he should be remembered by other people for something so negative as this.” As members of the Duke Ellington Society – an organization Healey himself supported, which honours its jazz legend namesake through concerts and scholarships for young jazz musicians – Alan and Judy Shiels agreed. “I am so glad we came this evening, because I had no idea that this was happening,” Judy said upon hearing of Urosavic’s late-night plight. “I am appalled. And I think Jeff would be appalled, too.” The renaming and rejuvenation of the former Woodford Park in
Healey’s honour was first driven by the fundraising efforts of a group of the Grammy Award-nominated and Juno Award-winning musician’s family, friends and supporters shortly after his death at age 41 in 2008, following a three-year battle with sarcoma cancer. The first phase of Jeff Healey Park – which included new play structures, slides, a climber, swing set, spring toys and benches – opened in 2010 thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Friends of Jeff Healey Park group. The contentious musical playground equipment, which was also funded by the private group, wasn’t unveiled until October 2015 as part of the park’s second phase. It was mere days after

the instruments’ installation in The Queensway and Royal York Road area park, Urosavic said, that her family was first awoken by late-night park patrons giving the xylophones a try. She began filing letters and phone calls of complaint with both city officials and police soon thereafter. In response, Doug Bennet, a business development officer with Parks, Forestry and Recreation, said his department removed the mallets from what they figured were the loudest of the offending instruments in the park. But the removal of the mallets, Urosavic said, had little impact, because many of the partying teens causing all the noise simply replaced them with branches and rocks pro-

cured from a nearby wooded area instead. City Parks staff also called the U.S. manufacturer of the musical equipment to request they ship a softer mallet in an attempt to muffle some of the noise, and to inquire if they had had any reports of noise complaints at any of their other installations around the world. “They could only think of one other situation like this, and in that case, they simply locked up the mallets at night,” Bennet said in an interview with The Guardian. “But that won’t work here, because as we heard tonight, people weren’t using the mallets, they were using branches, rocks and stones – and you can’t lock those up.” The city also considered relocating the instruments to another part of the park or constructing some kind of sound barrier around them, but none of those options were deemed effective enough to muffle the resonant sounds of the equipment. Moving forward, Di Ciano said, it appears the city’s only recourse is to consider removing at least some of the instruments for possible relocation elsewhere in the city – but first he needs to consult with the Friends of Jeff Healey Park group that provided the funds for the equipment. “I’d like to share your concerns with the organization that brought the renewal to Jeff Healey Park, because they certainly put a lot of work into this thing and I want them to understand some of the agony you guys are going through,” Di Ciano told residents at the meeting. “I’m sure many of them will still want to pay tribute to Jeff Healey, so if it’s not going to be the musical instruments, maybe there can be paintings or murals or something else (in the park) that can continue to showcase his legacy.”

Go top speed on cycling plan T he 10-year cycling plan proposed by the city this week that could see hundreds of kilometres of cycling infrastructure built is certainly ambitious and one that is worth going after in an expeditious manner. The plan is large in scale featuring 525 kilometres of new infrastructure with bike lanes and cycle tracks proposed in neighbourhoods across the entire city. This should generate excitement as there seems to be a city-building opportunity here with feasibility studies planned on some of Toronto’s major street corridors including Yonge Street from Front Street to Steeles Avenue, along Bloor Street from Dundas Street West to Sherbourne Street, and Danforth Avenue from Broadview Avenue to Kingston Road. Like public transit, this plan has the potential of connecting and moving Toronto residents by providing more travel alternatives especially for those living in the our view edges of the city where affordable transportation options are Network of woefully lacking. Building a connected network bike lanes will of bike lanes throughout the connect city city could also encourage more people to ride their bicycles on safer, designated routes. The benefits of doing so are many, such as helping reduce traffic gridlock, promoting a healthier lifestyle, and decreasing the number of cycling fatalities. The timing also seems right with growing support from cycling advocates as well as the political will to take action on these issues. Last week’s approval by Toronto Council for a pilot project to put separated bicycle lanes on Bloor Street is a good start. Of course, an ambitious plan like this has financial implications with the city recommending five levels of funding starting from $8 million a year that would allow for design and delivery of 27 per cent of the proposed projects, and $12 million a year to see half the projects go ahead. But this shouldn’t be done piecemeal and spending $20 million a year to complete the whole project in 10 years is warranted. With careful planning, community consultation, and financial accountability, the plan should proceed forward as soon as possible. Any delays in implementation could see costs rise and leave Toronto further behind other major cities when it comes to transportation infrastructure. It’s about time a city like Toronto catches up and becomes more connected.

Cabbies and left-wing councillors lose in Uber debate Last week’s vote on Uber at Toronto City Council did undeniable harm to two very vulnerable groups in our city. Taxi drivers form one of those groups. The suite of amendments moved by Mayor John Tory and approved by a solid majority of Toronto councillors makes the lives of drivers who don’t own their own plates undeniably worse. Licenced taxi drivers come away from the debate with less stable income, in a position that makes it virtually impossible to compete with a potential flood of Uber-X cars and drivers. And then there is that other vulnerable group – one that’s not vulnerable economically or socially perhaps, but is practically an endangered species in the political ecology of Toronto City Hall: Toronto’s small but vocal group of left-wing councillors. Tory left them
david nickle the city gasping in disbelief, after he abandoned a long negotiation with them to come up with a more progressive and taxi driver-friendly set of amendments, to make a sharp turn to the right and champion a very different, very Uber-friendly set of amendments. Those amendments mollified some of the bigger voices on the right – notably Giorgio Mammoliti and Jim Karygiannis. But they left the leadership on the left – Janet Davis, Gord Perks, Deputy Mayor Pam McConnell – seething more than usual. The negotiations had been long, and the left went into the May council meeting thinking they had a deal. The reversal was a clear indication that the left
could count on no reliable negotiations with the mayor’s office, so there was no point in trying. None of this should concern Tory much. While it’s true he has promised to bring Toronto Council together in a way that no other mayor has, the reality is that Tory does not really need to do so in order to govern. His natural allies, council’s centrists and right wing, will support him on most matters. If the mayor wants to put policy in place that strays to the left, he can rely on council’s left without a thought. Is the left going to vote against bike lanes, public housing dollars, public health matters? Given that Tory’s mandate seems to be based on offering comfort to voters of nearly every political persuasion, will the left really be able to bring forward a credible, winning mayoral candidate in
2018? Council’s left wing meanwhile, is in a corner. Unless a Bernie Sanders municipal figure emerges very soon, there is very little that a left-leaning councillor can do to harm Tory politically, particularly as Tory is far more likely to face a strong challenger from the right. And as was demonstrated last week, there is scarcely more that left-wing councillors can accomplish in working with Tory and his staff. They can vote for policies they agree with, of course, but influence them? Put a mark on them? Well they can certainly try – if, that is, they can put from their minds the May 2016 council meeting, when they and Toronto’s cab drivers both lost it all.

Ontario Green Solutions promises to work on resolution >>>from page 1 costs. “I think the government should tell people not to let anyone who’s selling into their home,” Clarke said last week in the living room of her Mississauga condo, noting it was her real estate lawyer who notified her of the lien. “They wouldn’t take no for an answer. I thought the company would take the equipment out when I sold my house. Instead, they put $20,000 on my mortgage. My lawyer said I won’t be able to sell my house until I clear this. So I paid it.” On Monday, May 2 Etobicoke Centre Liberal MPP Yvan Baker introduced a private member’s bill in the Ontario Legislature that proposed just that – a ban on the door-to-door sales, leases and rentals of furnaces, air conditioners, water heaters and water treatment devices in an effort to crack down on aggressive sales tactics. Baker’s bill goes to second reading June 9. Kelley Clarke, Clarke’s 38-year-old daughter, said she told the OGS salesperson in her living room that day, she didn’t want the equipment. “I thought it was a scam,” Kelley said. “I told them we were selling the house in the spring.” Kelley said the OGS salesperson urged them to take the equipment to save money until the house sold. OGS president Peter Kovacic, in a sit-down interview with The Guardian at his company’s East Mall offices, expressed shock at the Clarkes’ allegations. He said Skymark placed the lien after at least one month of nonpayment on Clarke’s contract. Kovacic strongly disputed the Clarkes’ allegation of misrepresentation; that his salespeople pledged the equipment would save the family on heating and hydro. “We have written compliance, video compliance, and me. If there

Ontario Green Solutions' operations manager Vladimir Petrovic, left, vice-president of sales Boris Clamocak and president Peter Kovacic on Friday at the company’s offices at 920 The East Mall. The firm is currently in a dispute over a lease agreement for a water softener and carbon filter that has resulted in a $19,000 lien against the mortgage of Frances Clarke.
is misrepresentation, I will charge (the salesperson) with fraud,” Kovacic said. He added he has fired two employees, one for misrepresentation, and another for forging a client’s signature on a contract, and those clients were refunded. The Ministry of Government and Consumer Services reported it has received inquiries, but not complaints, against the two companies; seven about OGS in 2015-16 and one about Skymark Finance this year. An inquiry occurs when consumers or businesses call the ministry to verbally ask about their rights and responsibilities.
You’ve signed a door-to-door contract, but want to cancel it. Now, where do you go and what do you do? First, you need to learn your consumer rights as set out by the Consumer Protection Act, which covers the most-common consumer transactions. The act protects you from unfair business practices. Consumer Protection Ontario’s website helps consumers ask the right questions before entering into a contract, like joining a gym or renting water treatment equipment. A Consumer Beware List enables consumers to check if a business has had serious complaints or charges filed against it. Consumers with contract concerns may also call 416326-8800 or 1-800-889-9768 or TTY 1-877-666-6545 to understand their rights under the Consumer Protection Act. All door-to-door contracts have a 10-day cooling-off
“‘Complaints’ require documented evidence of a contravention of consumer protection legislation,” ministry spokesperson Stephen Puddister wrote in an email. Kovacic produced two audio recordings of his employees’ calls to Clarke, one made the day after she signed the contract, the other made the day after the equipment installation. Clarke can be heard saying “yeah” repeatedly during both calls, when asked if she received a copy of her contract, understood its 120-month term, and that she had a right to cancel during the 10-day coolingoff period, and in the second call, when asked if she was satisfied with
the installation. However, Clarke said she called OGS repeatedly during the 10-day cooling-off period to cancel her contract. Kovacic said he has no record of any calls; that any voicemails left would be sent to company email. “He said it takes a month to see the savings,” Clarke said. “‘If you don’t want it within a month, we’ll take it back,’ he said. I called again. He said he’d call me back. He never called back. The messages on his phone were always full.” Kelley said she, too, made calls, at first making contact, and then not reaching anyone. The Clarkes did not keep a record of their calls.
PROTECT YOURSELF Source: Consumer Protection Ontario period. That means you can cancel the contract for any reason within 10 days of receiving a written copy of the agreement. Neither did the family write a letter to OGS to request cancellation of their contract within the 10-day cooling-off period. Consumer Protection Ontario advises consumers to send cancellation requests by email or registered mail. Boris Clamocak, OGS’s vice-president of sales, said the first call he got from Clarke was in March; she wanted the equipment removed. Kovacic disputed Clarke’s allegations, but said he felt for her plight. “I think there is equal responsibility in this from her and from us. Usually in life, each side has equal consequences,” he said. An hour after the interview with The Guardian, Kovacic called to say he had spoken with Skymark Finance officials about Clarke’s case. Kovacic and Skymark agreed to resolve Clarke’s situation. “I’m just trying to make this so nobody gets hurt, and exercise proper business practice,” Kovacic said. “Let her know we take her position seriously, we’re considering our options and we’ll get back to her by letter, email or a phone call mid- to the end of (this) week.” Kovacic said he wants to resolve the issue for his 11-month-old company of four office staff and 10 sales people and for its reputation, and for Clarke. “I’m aiming to get half that money back in her pocket,” he said. “Nobody did anything wrong. But here is the situation. I want to have a resolution.”
in a false, misleading or deceptive way, you can withdraw from the contract by writing to the business within one year and get a full refund. V-E Day ‘never to be forgotten’ says veteran City commemorates victory over Axis forces JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com May 8, 1945 will forever be remembered as the day the Allied forces finally claimed victory over the Axis forces in the Second World War, and the City of Toronto did its part to keep the memory alive with a special ceremony on Monday. The day’s festivities began with the laying of flowers and wreaths on the Old City Hall Cenotaph, with representatives from various branches of the military, police, fire department and EMS, foreign nations and veterans of the Second World War themselves taking part. Following the touching ceremony, hundreds gathered in Nathan Phillips Square to reflect on the sacrifices made by tens of thousands of Canadians who joined in the war effort. “I happened to be in Trafalgar Square near Nelson’s Column when people from Hyde Park and surrounding suburbs began celebrating,” said Second World War veteran Cyril Roach, whose Royal Canadian
Navy vessel was docked for repairs at the time. “As the king and queen joined in with crowds, it is a day never to be forgotten.” Roach noted, while V-E (Victory in Europe) Day was a time of celebration, in the intervening years it has also become a time to remember the losses taken in the name of freeing Europe from Nazi control. “Today, as we celebrate the Allied victory in Europe, we also remember the sacrifices that brought the military success of the Allies, (and) also the suffering of the civilians who fought on and lost their lives helping the Allies during the years of occupation,” he said. Theo Hopkinson, who worked with code breakers at Hanslope Park to help Allied forces communicate in secret. The work of code breakers was largely unheralded – Hopkinson and others were forbidden to speak of it for 30 years after the war – until recently, when the movie The Imitation Game shed light on the revolutionary work of Alan Turing in cracking theretofore unbreakable German ”Enigma” code. Their work

being sent by Axis forces. “The work done shaved two years off the war,” Hopkinson said. She recalled V-E Day as a massive
time of celebration. “A million people took to the streets for the biggest love-fest you have ever known,” she said. Fellow veteran Allan Stapleton worked on the Enigma machine, helping to crack the German code. He noted that Allied intelligence managed to use a bit of trickery to help fight the Nazis. “For example, when we went into Italy, (Adolf Hitler) thought we were going into Greece,” he said. “British intelligence got a dead body, put it in a diplomat’s clothing and put a letter in the pocket saying we were sailing from England and Scotland to Greece.” Ward 10 (York Centre) councillor James Pasternak, who hosted the V-E Day ceremony at Nathan Phillips Square, noted it is crucial to remember the sacrifices made by so many in fighting the Nazis and the rest of the Axis powers. “Our ability to understand the greatness of the moment is tempered by the realization that they were so young, and yet the maturity beyond their years ensured that the ultimate sacrifice could sow the seeds of our greatest rewards,” he said.

How to Select Your Home Improvement Contractor The Certified Contractors Network (CCN) is an independent, North American organization focused on increasing the professionalism in the contacting industry, as well educating homeowners on how to select a professional contractor. CCN states that “the critical factor in a successful contracting project is selecting the right contractor”. With the multitude of home renovation shows now on television, home owners are learning that not all renovations go as they had hoped. Most dissatisfied construction project victims limit their investigation focus to “How much will it cost?” even though studies clearly show that most dissatisfaction involves the lower bid contractors.

The CCN suggests selecting a contractor that can show you in writing all of the following criteria: • Has a permanent place of business and is licensed. • Has a minimum of $2,000,000 in liability insurance and complete worker’s compensation coverage (WSIB). Homeowners may be liable for uninsured contractors. • Staff are trained and certified by the manufacturer. • Installs products according to all of the manufacturer’s specifications to validate the product warranty.

City lays out 10-year cycling plan Hair News
DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com
I panicked –
My hair was thinning! Maya was shocked by the change in her hair. Fullness and volume were replaced by thinness and lifeless hair. She had to do something.
T
he hair I found in my brush, in the shower and on my cardigan was unfamiliar to me. It was thinning like never before. How could this be happening?
I had to do something I found out my mother experienced the same problems when she was younger, and she simply accepted her fate. But so much of my personality is in my hair, and I did not want to have the same problems. I had read about the importance of hair nutrients, so I decided to focus on the inside rather than on the outside, and went looking for a good supplement. D

I was recommended a natural product called Hair Volume™. I have now used it for 2 months and I am really satisfied with the product. My hair feels full and healthy and even my nails feel much stronger. The shedding has also almost stopped. This is proof to me that proper nutrition on the inside helps you look your best on the outside. I highly recommend Hair Volume.” Maya N., Sweden

It will cost $20 million a year for the next decade for Toronto to build out the entirety of its 10-year cycling plan. The plan to spread a cycling network across Toronto will be coming to Monday’s meeting of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee — where councillors will look at various options for timing and funding. The plan features a total of 525 kilometres of new cycling infrastructure — 1,050 kilometres of cycle lanes counting each direction. The plan would see feasibility studies for cityspanning bike lanes or cycle tracks extended on Yonge Street from Front Street to Steeles Avenue, along Bloor from Dundas Street West to Sherbourne Street, and further along Danforth Avenue from Broadview Avenue to Kingston Road. Jane Street would see a bike lane from south of Hwy. 401 to Steeles Avenue; Kingston

Road from Eglinton Avenue to the Highland Creek Trail, Kipling Avenue from Bloor Street to the Waterfront Trail, and Midland Avenue from Steeles down to Lawrence Avenue, and the Gatineau Trail to the Waterfront Trail. Lake Shore Boulevard West would see a bike path between Mississauga and the Humber River. Also included in the plan are off-road cycling routes, and along quieter streets.
Staff have recommended five levels of funding. At $8 million a year, the plan would allow for design and delivery of 27 per cent of the proposed projects. A $12 million annual plan would build about half the projects. Spending $16 million a year would allow 85 per cent of the proposed networks to go forward. Annual funding of $20 million would allow delivery of all of the projects in 10 years.

Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything being said, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, the Audéo V hearing aid has been designed specifically to understand speech in group situations. The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in group situations, especially in restaurants. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that determine when you hear things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory centre of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.
Hearing sensation! Swiss researchers: Audéo V is superior for conversation.
Without Audéo V
With Audéo V
The Audéo V hearing aids provide considerable reduction in noise allowing you to focus on speech. Developed by Swiss audiologists the Audéo V hearing aid is designed to improve speech comprehension in noise, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can trial the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. During your FREE hearing test, our Hearing Care Professionals will determine how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role the technology called “Autosense OS” plays. This technology can recognize where the person being spoken to is located and can amplify only his or her voice,
while ambient noise is reduced. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing aid can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds, seamlessly adjusting to the listening situation. According to Swiss researchers, this can significantly improve speech comprehension, especially in conversation for the right candidates. Interested people can register for a free hearing test and trial of the Audéo V by calling 1.888.408.7377

‘Under Gardiner’ contest ends in tie, vote results in question RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com
The results of a voting contest for naming a public space project underneath the Gardiner Expressway appear to be in doubt. Voting for the Reclaim the Name campaign to come up with an official moniker for the Under Gardiner project, a planned redevelopment of public space to open next year, ended over the weekend. However, a “flurry of last minute voting activity” just before the deadline has led organizers to wonder if prohibited voting methods were used. As it stands, two options, the Bentway and the Artery, are tied having secured 34 per cent of the total vote each. “It’s extremely close, in fact we are not able to call it at this point,” said Christopher McKinnon from Waterfront Toronto, the agency tasked with developing the $25-million plan. “As we were watching the results coming in we noticed some suspicious activity that could possibly have been the result of automatic voting, which is prohibited under the Reclaim the Name campaign

McKinnon said it was too early to determine if the results will need to be scrapped if the vote is found to be tampered with. Concerns were initially raised over Twitter, with screenshots showing the Artery option leading the voting at www.undergardiner.com just before a “site crash” ahead of the midnight deadline May 7. After that, it appears the Bentway has the most votes. Named after the concrete pillars holding up the Gardiner, the Bentway name was part of the final shortlist selected by a jury panel from 884 initial public suggestions. But McKinnon said the site didn’t crash, and strongly denied the result was fixed to favour the Bentway choice. Regardless of the outcome, Toronto Council must approve the eventual selected name. The Under Gardiner plan will span 1.75 kilometres below the expressway from Strachan to Spadina Avenue. Waterfront Toronto hopes to open it by Canada Day 2017.

LAKESHORE HONDA Western tunnelling now complete The Eglinton Crosstown LRT celebrated an important construction milestone this week. Metrolinx announced the completion of western tunnelling for the portion of the light rail line to run below Eglinton Avenue. Since June 2013, two massive Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), nicknamed Dennis and Lea, had excavated a tunnel below street level from Black Creek Drive to Yonge Street. Last year, another pair of TBMs started tunnelling the Crosstown’s eastern portion from Brentcliffe Road towards Yonge Street. They are currently west of Bayview Avenue. gardiner closure on weekend wcomplete

CONSUMER FEATURE
New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.
SPRING HEARING SAVINGS
Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners
like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

A TDSB byelection to fill Michael Ford’s Ward 1 seat has been called for July 25. To be eligible to run, candidates must be: a Canadian citizen; at least 18 years of age; a resident in the area of the jurisdiction of the TDSB; a public school supporter; not legally prohibited from voting; and not disqualified by any legislation from holding office. The Toronto District School Board’s graduation rate has hit an all-time high of 85 per cent this year. “The most recent graduation rate for the TDSB indicates that we are making progress as a board and are providing students with the tools and supports they need to succeed,” TDSB Chair Robin Pilkey said in a statement. The graduation rate – attributed to the TDSB’s 2010-2015 cohort of students – marks a one per cent increase over last year and an overall increase of 16 per cent since 2000.

Consortium awarded $330M to build hospital expansion E t o b i c o k e He a l t h c a r e Partnership has been awarded $330 million to design, build, finance and maintain the new Etobicoke General Hospital (EGH) tower. Construction on the new Phase 1 Patient Tower Project will begin immediately with an expected completion date of late 2018, Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and William Osler Health System (Osler) said in a news release announcing the contract last Friday. Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Dr. Eric Hoskins called the announcement an “exciting milestone” for the community in Etobicoke. “In a few short years, this growing community will receive a new, state-of-theart patient tower that will serve patients for generations and reflect the high quality health care our government is committed to providing to Ontarians,” he said in the statement.
The new tower, which will involve the construction of a new four-storey wing, will add approximately 250,000 sq. ft. of space to the existing facility and house the services “most urgently needed by the Etobicoke community.” keeping up with time Project features will include: n a larger, state-of-the-art emergency department to better meet the community’s need for high-quality emergency care; n an ICU/CCU nearly four times larger than the current space; n larger patient rooms filled with natural light that provide privacy and space to accommodate family members; n a maternal newborn unit with birthing suites and a specialized Level II nursery for patients with non-lifethreatening complications;
n and an ambulatory procedures unit featuring procedure/operating rooms, pre- and post-op preparation and recovery areas and dedicated clinic spaces, including a respiratory clinic. “With the completion of this state-of-the-art fourstorey wing, we will ensure Etobicoke General Hospital keeps pace with new technologies, new diagnostic techniques and improvements in care – in addition to expanding access to the programs and services that are needed most by patients and families,” John Davies, chair of the Osler board of directors, said of the project in a statement. The EGH Phase 1 Patient Tower project also represents a significant economic opportunity for local suppliers and contractors. At peak construction, Etobicoke Healthcare Partnership estimates that more than 300 workers will be on site daily.

Secrets revealed to help you…
Beat Lower Back, Disc And Sciatic Pain Now
hankfully, new natural treatment methods help many find the relief they had been searching for. Sciatica is a painful condition that affects the sciatic nerve. The pain usually radiates into one or both buttocks, descends the back of the leg and can sometime be felt in the foot. It is often a severe, knife-like pain, but can also be noticed as numbness or tingling in the leg and foot. It is unpredictable and does not go away even when you change positions or lay down. Sciatica can result from years of poor posture, muscle strain, pregnancy, excess weight, wearing high heels, or sleeping on a very soft mattress. Sciatica is often a symptom of a slipped disc, pinched nerve or arthritis. Although pain pills may temporarily cover up the symptoms, our holistic approach can provide a more effective, long term relief. “Our team members apply their individual skills and knowledge to make an accurate diagnosis and administer the right treatment that will get the best result for each patient.”

Denise Bebenek starts off the annual Meagan's Walk alongside Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders, in honour of Meagan Bebenek, who passed away in 2001 due to an inoperable brain tumor.
Parents pay tribute to their children during 15th annual Meagan’s Walk FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Patti Panzeca never thought she would find herself at a walk for pediatric brain research. But that’s just what the Maple resident has done for the past five years, after her son, Johnny, lost his battle with a brain tumour at age seven. Panzeca was one of thousands of walkers who took to the Toronto downtown core Saturday, May 7 for the 15th annual Meagan’s Walk. Meagan Bebenek was just four years old when she was diagnosed with brain stem glioma, an inoperable brain tumour. She died in 2001, six months after the diagnosis. Following her passing, Meagan’s mother Denise decided to start Meagan’s Walk, which has become an annual event to raise funds for the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). The five kilometre fundraiser, which has raised $4.55 million to date for pediatric brain tumour research at Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre at SickKids, kicked off at Fort York Historical Site, 250 Fort York Blvd., at 10 a.m., with participants walking along downtown sidewalks before heading up University Avenue to form a human hug around the hospital at 11:45 a.m. Panzeca said soon after she
noticed her son’s left eye was red, he began having blurred vision. A trip to SickKids on Father’s Day 2010 diagnosed the youngster with an inoperable brain tumour called DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma). “It came out of no where,” said Panzeca just before the walk’s closing ceremony, sporting a white T-shirt with a picture of her son dressed in a Spider Man costume. Doctors said Johnny had six to nine months to live. The young boy passed away March 13, 2011, one week shy of the nine month mark. Panzeca, who was surrounded by dozens of family and friends in similar T-shirts, with some holding a banner honouring Johnny, said she never imagined finding herself in this predicament. “I never thought in a million years I would be doing this,” she said of the walk. Ugo Bartolomucci’s daughter, Emma, was just eight when she lost a 16-month battle with brain cancer five years ago. Throughout her illness, the little girl managed to keep a strong faith and ended up being a pillar of support for her family and friends, her dad said. Bartolomucci, who, along with other Emma supporters, wore a pink T-shirt with her favourite sayings forming a heart, which included “my heart is big because I have
love for everyone.” Asked why he participates in Meagan’s Walk, the Mississauga resident looked up to the hospital’s floors, which had children peering out through glass windows to the celebration below. “I remember when my daughter couldn’t get out of bed,” he said, becoming emotional. “We do it for them.” To commence the walk’s closing ceremony on Elizabeth Street, Denise Bebenek along with Mayor John Tory, released purple and pink balloons into the air while Avril Lavigne’s Keep Holding On played on loudspeakers. Walkers then formed a giant hug – in the form of a wave – around the hospital. “She has created something dear in the memory of her daughter,” Tory said of Bebenek. “We are lucky to live in a city that has a place like SickKids.” Tory then proclaimed Sunday, May 7 as Paediatric Brain Tumour Day. “Fifteen years ago we knew a great thing to do for these children is simply to love them,” Bebenek said. “The hug shows the power of the spirit, that they are not facing difficulties alone. Let’s thank Meagan for the gift of living in the moment. Her wish was to give each person a gift to thank them for their kindness, and this hug continues to be her gift focused on every single child who needs us.”

RBC Foundation supports mental health RBC Foundation has donated $1 million to support youth mental health at William Osler Health System’s three hospitals, including Etobicoke General. “We’re incredibly grateful to RBC Foundation for their generosity and long-standing commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of children, adolescents and their families,” Osler Foundation president Ken Mayhew said
in a statement. RBC Foundation’s donation will support the RBC Better Mental Health Program, which awards a recipient with an annual grant established to support mental health innovations and initiatives that benefit youth and young adults aged 15 to 29 at risk or struggling with mental health and addiction. The rest will be used to build and equip the Centre of
Excellence in Community and Mental Health and Addictions at the new Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness. It will also help support mental health and addictions care at Etobicoke General and Brampton Civic hospitals. Osler’s Mental Health and Addictions Program serves more than 7,000 child and adolescent mental health patients each year.

The Study The City of Toronto, in partnership with the TTC and Waterfront Toronto is establishing a vision and plan for a comprehensive waterfront transit network. During this study, we will be reviewing existing waterfront transit, previously planned transit initiatives, and current and future transit needs. A range of preliminary concepts will be developed and evaluated to help determine a preferred east-west waterfront transit solution that will integrate north/south transit and active transportation, linking people from across the City to the waterfront and its nearby destinations and attractions. To learn more about the study, please visit:
