a broader-based consultation process and study ordered by the city’s Executive Committee in March, to explore the implications of increasing the existing gambling operations at Woodbine from its current 3,000 slot machines. That proposal was already rejected by city council in 2013 as part of a larger debate about gaming in Toronto that included the proposed development of a highly controversial downtown casino. “In essence, what we’re doing now is dusting off that information we had two years ago,” Deputy Mayor Vincent Crisanti told meeting >>>CRISANTI, page 14

Rob Ford will be off work for at least four months as he recovers from the surgery, on orders to maintain strict bed rest. ‘Twelve dancers, 800 years of experience’ Senior dance troupe takes to the stage in Dancing in the Third Act, May 20 to 22 CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com At 86 years young, Gwen Coffen admits she ‘never ever’ dreamed she’d be sashaying across a dance stage at this point in her life – but next week, thanks to Dancing in the Third Act, she’ll be one of 12 sprightly seniors to do just that. The unique seniors’ dance project, which takes to the stage at Silverthorn Collegiate May 20, 21 and 22 as a signature project of the city’s Cultural Hotspot, drew more than 40 prospective senior dancers to auditions this past February – Coffen the eldest among them. “One day after yoga class, my friend brought The Etobicoke Guardian to me and said ‘Gwen, look at this – they’re looking for seniors who can move. How about the two of us go?’” Coffen said of auditioning for Dancing in the Third Act, which is being co-produced by Arts Etobicoke, Lakeshore Arts and the City of Toronto. Having trained in ballet and tap dance as a teen back in her native Capetown, South Africa, Coffen, now a Weston area resident, hadn’t put on her dancing shoes since immigrating to Toronto and opening a flower shop, but jumped at the chance to do so. “The day of the audition, I looked around and thought, ‘oh no, I think I’m the oldest one here – they’ll never choose me,’” she laughed last week, while taking a break from rehearsals in the Silverthorn auditorium. “But when they did, I was quite surprised and quite happy.” In the 11 weeks since, Coffen and her fellow Dancing in the Third Act dancers – who also include Linda Bayliss, Pietr Biessels, Susan Brown, Ernest Douglas Grimshaw, Wayne Jolly, Slade Lander, Chu-Hui Lin, Gina Maenhaut, Ron Oldfield, Bob Tsunokawa, and Nancy Zingel – have spent many of their waking hours practicing. In fact, the recently formed dance

troupe – many of whom have no formal training – have been spending three-and-half laugh-filled hours every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon rehearsing under the esteemed tutelage of award-winning choreographer, dancer, director and teacher Randy Glynn. “It’s been a complete riot,” Glynn, himself 65, said during week 10 of the rehearsal process last Thursday. “The biggest challenge with us seniors is memory – nobody can

remember anything. And if you’re an old dancer, chances are you’ve spent your life remembering way more than you should, anyway...so that’s why we have such a long rehearsal process. But it’s all coming together now, and it’s been a pleasure working with them – they bring their senses of humour every day.” Glynn, who was a principal dancer for many years with Toronto’s legendary Danny Grossman Company before forming his own namesake company in 1987, first created the 295 Adelaide St West, #2703

Dancing in the Third Act piece for 12 untrained seniors in the town of Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia in August 2013. Since then, despite its smalltown roots, the contemporary dance performance has taken off – it’s been reviewed internationally, toured professional dance festivals (most recently opening Montreal’s Quartiers Danses Festival), been re-staged on 12 Orillia seniors and now here in Etobicoke, and been invited to tour in Canada, the US and abroad. Glynn attributes Dancing in the Third Act’s success to the fact that the dancers’ charisma shines through

with every step. “When you get to 65 or 70 or even 86, you can’t hold your personality back – you just are who you are,” Glynn said, noting that the dancers taking part this time around range in age from 60 to 86. “After you’ve lived that long, your personality comes through in everything you do, and that’s what makes this so interesting – not that the dancers are perfect or not perfect, but that they’re different and their bodies reflect their years. ‘Twelve dancers, 800 years of experience’ – that’s our tagline.” Arts Etobicoke’s Heather Ervin, who has watched much of the rehearsal process, said she, for one, is amazed by the “professional-grade production” that’s come out of what began as a community arts initiative. “Both (Lakeshore Arts and Arts Etobicoke) are about spreading access to the arts through community arts education and programming, because we believe in the transformative power of the arts in people’s lives – and Dancing in the Third Act is a great example of that,” she said. After hearing nothing but rave reviews from Dancing in the Third Act’s participants, Ervin said Arts Etobicoke is now hoping to get the funding needed to launch some local seniors’ contemporary dance classes in the near future – a prospect Coffen was very pleased to hear about. “With dance, besides doing the movements with your arms and your body, which is good exercise, you have to use your memory, too, which is most important for seniors, because we need to keep our brains active,” she said. Dancing in the Third Act will run Wednesday, May 20, Thursday, May 21 and Friday, May 22 at 8 p.m. in the auditorium at Silverthorn Collegiate, 291 Mill Rd.

T

oronto has a well-deserved reputation for its diverse offering of arts and cultural festivals. These are events that showcase a wide range of talents, skills and backgrounds – and they provide an important economic boost as well. The city’s Cultural Hotspot program, in its second year, is a welcome addition to Toronto’s cultural programming that gives a specific area of the city an increased profile. This year, the spotlight is on centralsouth Etobicoke and the artistic, cultural and heritage events taking place in that community from now through October. The concept is straight-forward enough: use a series of signature community projects to inspire residents and visitors to discover the area’s arts, culture, food, businesses, heritage and more. our view This year, examples of events include the Dancing in the Third performance and Lakeshore Spotlight on Act Mardi Gras as well as community culture good events related to the upcoming Pan Am Games. for all of us Benefits of this kind of focused program include an increased profile as well as greater co-ordination of multiple events – for diversity of interested participants and to help events that may otherwise struggle to get exposure. For residents of the neighbourhoods, the program is an opportunity to forge a greater connection to their community and for folks who live in other parts of the city, it’s an opportunity to glean a greater understanding of Toronto’s diverse communities. Last year, the Cultural Hotspot program was in the neighbourhoods of south Scarborough, with signature projects such as the Taste of Lawrence, Guild Alive with Culture and the Port Union Waterfront Festival. We hope the program’s continuation inspires new arts and cultural endeavours and helps develop a civic reputation as a global arts and cultural centre. Change is a reality in this city. Toronto’s population is growing and is becoming increasingly diverse. As the city continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how younger generations reshape the city’s cultural identity based on the more global influences of today. Giving our communities an opportunity for greater exposure from an increased breadth of arts and culture can only enhance that.

Doug Ford keeps limelight on family while Rob recovers from surgery

T

here was good news for the Ford family at Mount Sinai Hospital this week: Rob Ford, father, son, husband, city councillor and former mayor came through a difficult surgery as well as can be expected. Really, this is not big news for the city – except of course it is. Rob Ford has become a gravitational singularity for Toronto municipal news. Reporters across town were on tenterhooks, waiting to find out how things went for the councillor for Ward 2 and his eightmonth battle with cancer. Ford’s affable executive assistant Dan Jacobs took the point on Monday, providing regular updates as to the progress of the 10-hour surgery, and then on Tuesday with details of his boss’ recovery.

david nickle the city As I write this, it looks pretty good. City councillors have had health challenges before, but rarely have their issues gathered such attention. Rob Ford will be off work for four months. Ward 44 Councillor Ron Moeser was off work for much longer than that, dealing with the complications from surgery on his ankle during the last term. But few noticed. Of course, Moeser is no Rob Ford. In many respects, Moeser ought not mind that he’s not: Ford’s fame comes in part from his mayoralty, but in larger part for his sins. Thanks to Ford’s eventually admitted drug and alcohol abuse

issues, and the behaviour that surrounded it, he and his family became central figures in the story of Toronto over the past four years. And they are still in it. In the next four months, Ford’s brother Doug – who last term was Ford’s replacement in Ward 2, political wing-man and eventually replacement in his mayoral re-election bid – will be back on the job, as a volunteer in the Ward 2 office. Again, under ordinary circumstances this is no big deal. Lots of councillors put their families to work either in their offices as volunteers or on the ground in the ward. Doug won’t be back on council, won’t be shaping policy, probably won’t even be in the office that much. He’ll just be helping out.

Except, of course, it won’t be that simple. If Doug Ford doesn’t insert himself into political debates and personality politics, then we in the media will pull him on stage. Rob has made it clear as his health improves, so too does the prospect that he’ll be making a play for a second term as mayor in 2018, and a part of the next four months will be an exercise in making certain that the Ford name remains in the public eye. Doug, who last term took to scrums like the proverbial duck to water, will be doing his best to make sure our gaze doesn’t falter. David Nickle is The Guardian’s city hall reporter. ‘The biggest challenge is we have to stop Rob’ Doug says of brother’s determined work ethic >>>from page 1 “I’m going to see how it goes,” said Doug in an interview Tuesday. “Folks and the people in Ward 2... I have it down like the back of my hand. I’m going to help the people. I know Rob’s staff, they’re really great, fantastic, and the other councillors will help out.” Doug said he won’t be dealing with any of the political parts of the job – attending committees and council meetings – and he might not even be at city hall that much. And he said that it’s more than likely that even convalescing, Rob will be engaged on the phone. “Rob does the vast majority of his work on the phone,” Doug said. “Rob’s an expert on the phone – you can take care of a lot of problems on the phone. In fact, he’s one of

the most productive politicians on the phone.” Doug said he’ll concentrate on doing whatever on-site constituency work needs to happen in Ward 2, and also on keeping Rob on the straight and narrow when it comes to resting, after the major surgery he’s just undergone. But Doug said some of the Ford

family traditions – including the summer FordFest bacchanals that the Fords have thrown for more than a decade – will continue. “Like Rob emphasized to me, ‘things can’t stop because I’m in the hospital.’ Work with the constituents can’t stop, my fundraiser can’t stop, FordFest can’t stop,” Doug said. “The biggest challenge is we have to stop Rob. It’s very, very serious when they... took out his abdominal wall there. He could easily, over the next four or five or even six months the doctors say, have a major hernia.” And Doug maintained he’s serious about keeping out of politics. “I wasn’t elected, I chose the private sector and I’m just trying to help out the constituents,” he said. “It’s a unique situation we have.”

Etobicoke’s creative scene steps into the spotlight with Cultural Hotspot

TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke is in the spotlight. The city’s second edition of its Cultural Hotspot will shine a spotlight on arts, culture and community in centralsouth Etobicoke from May through October. The initiative focuses on a series of signature projects to inspire residents, and visitors alike, to discover the arts, culture, food, businesses, heritage and parkland in Etobicoke bounded by Dixon Road to the lake, and from Park Lawn Road to Browns Line. Sponsored by The Etobicoke Guardian, highlights of the Hotspot include a mobile art trailer, a seniors’ contemporary dance project, murals on TTC vehicles, local festivals, and more. Toronto has budgeted $200,000 to advertise this year’s Cultural Hotspot, and is funding its community partners an additional $200,000 to mount unique events. Nadira Pattison, manager of arts services with the city’s Economic Development and Culture division, said Cultural Hotspot 2015 creates an opportunity to bring investments to neighbourhoods through arts and culture. Community partners help the city “put a lens on” and collect data on year-round happenings. “Come engage in arts and culture, events, restaurants, unique businesses and find out interesting history,” Pattison said. “Even people who live in Etobicoke, it’s good to be reminded, ‘I can go to this’ or ‘I can take my friends to this.’” Visit www.toronto.ca/culturalhotspot for more information, including interactive event listings. Smaller, possibly new or emerging, arts and culture organizations leveraged city funding in so-called SPARK Projects to engage underserved populations and to

provide youth and community engagement, youth mentorship and employment, Pattison said. The city has published 10,000 copies of its Cultural Hotspot 2015 Loops Guide and distributed it to more

than 35 community partners including The Assembly Hall, the Etobicoke Civic Centre, community centres and libraries. The guide includes suggestions of half-day and full-day self-guided excursions to par-

ticipating Cultural Hotspot 2015 community partners. The updated Loops Guide to last year’s south Scarborough Cultural Hotspot lists more than 200 points of interest, Pattison said. The Etobicoke Cultural

Hotspot legacy guide will be published this fall. In 2011, Toronto City Council approved a report, titled Creative Capital Gains, that recommended the city adopt a city-designated and funded Cultural Hotspot pro-

gram “to strengthen ties to culture-friendly businesses, to encourage novel partnerships and innovative models for participation in the arts.” Pathways to Education Rexdale, in partnership with the city, presents its 4th Annual ART JAM 2015 on May 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Elmbank Junior Middle Academy, 10 Pittsboro Dr. It is a SPARK project of this year’s Hotspot showcase. Pathways to Education is a national non-profit organization that helps youth in economically disadvantaged communities graduate from high school and successfully transition to post-secondary education. Street art, painting and photography created by Jamestown and Rexdale youth in grades 9 and 10 explore the theme, Identities in Motion, and will be on display and on sale during the event’s silent auction. Professional artists Arabi Rajeswaran, Rob Bangrove and Angela Tupper worked with students as mentors. “It’s a great, unique celebration in north Etobicoke. There’s nothing quite like it just for youth,” said event organizer Salomeh Ahmadi, a Rexdale Community Health Centre program facilitator. “Youth expressed interest in exploring what identity means, and the fact it is always in motion and trying to capture that.” Ahmadi said a body of knowledge and research shows the arts are proven to build resilience and selfesteem in young people because it offers learning that is non-intimidating. “Arts promotes positive behaviours, reduces boredom and isolation. It’s about teaching technical aspects of art, but also engaging with youth having fun, exploring and developing friendships, memories and new skills,” she said.

Police urging people to report incidents when they occur TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Thompson Orchard residents concerned about “escalating” teen aggression in their neighbourhood received a strong message from officers last Wednesday night – report incidents to police. Dozens of residents and Kingsway business owners shared complaints in recent months of two reportedly different groups of teens that ranged from assault, vandalism and thefts from cars to physical intimidation, verbal assault, harassment and trespassing. One young man reported being assaulted just after 9 p.m. one night in March 2014 just south of Starbucks on Thompson Avenue, the street where he lives. “It was pretty vicious,” he said. “They just wanted my cell. They left when I roared like a lion. It’s definitely a real issue.” Thompson Orchard Community Organization (TOCA) held the standingroom only public meeting at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School. “There is a real imbalance between people observing things (and calling police),” TOCA chair Mike Green told the room. “I’m not being critical. I see things and think, ‘I don’t want to bother the police.’ But I’d encourage people to report incidents to police.” Earlier, Green had met to discuss concerns with 22 Division police commander Supt. Shaun Narine, Sgt. Doug MacDonald, who heads the division’s community response unit and Jennifer Lau, Community Police Liaison Committee chair.

Crisanti, and former politicians, asking residents to consider expansion plan >>>from page 1 attendees Monday night. “Unfortunately that vote for Woodbine was a very, very tight vote. I think it just got convoluted and mixed up in the major fight, which was the downtown issue. “But now we’re focused on Woodbine and Woodbine only. And I can tell you that Woodbine has been a great community partner, they do a wonderful job, and they employ about 7,500 people – and this is also about protecting the jobs that are currently there.” One of those existing jobs belongs to Joanne Brown, a 29-year employee of Woodbine Racetrack who came out to Monday night’s meeting to speak out in favour of expansion. “Let’s get the shovel in the ground,” she said to cheers from the crowd. “I get laid off in the wintertime and it’s been happening for all 29 years (that I’ve worked there), because the racing season slows down...We have great employees there – that’s why they stay for 29, 40, 45 years – and I think we need to let Torontonians know what we have right here in Toronto.” Brown was just one in a long line of attendees at Monday’s meeting to express their support for expanded gaming at Woodbine – including union representatives and former local politicians with strong ties to the community. As president of Unite Here Local 75, Lis Pimentel represents 400 hospitality workers at Woodbine. She took the opportunity Monday night to express her concerns for not only protecting those existing jobs, but also ensuring that any new jobs created by an expansion be full-time and unionized – a sentiment that was echoed by several others who also spoke to the issue of “jobs to support families”. “I have a couple concerns: one is protecting the existing jobs at Woodbine and making sure that the operation that’s there is sustainable and functioning really well and a real tourism hub so that the jobs that are there are safe,” she said. “And two, that the jobs that would come would be really stable. We want full-

time unionized jobs in that place.” Former Etobicoke North councillor Suzan Hall and trustee John Hastings, as well as former Etobicoke Centre councillor Peter Leon, meanwhile, also added their voice of consent to the proposed Woodbine Casino expansion. “I’ve lived in Etobicoke now for 60 years. In the early days before we became a city, we talked about developing the northwest corner and making things happen...We’ve watched industry grow in this area, and we watched industry walk away from this area lately,” Leon said. “But new industr y is coming back. There are people living in that area who could use an opportunity to better themselves. I see this development, this opportunity, as something really great for this part of Etobicoke.” gambling concerns On the other side of the debate, one woman pleaded with the city to “not expand any casinos” but rather to expand awareness initiatives surrounding the “terrible, fatal disease” of compulsive gambling. A recovering addict herself, Zohreh (who declined to give her last name), detailed for meeting attendees Monday night “her long, long experience of pain and suffering as a compulsive gambler.” “I get goosebumps when I remember how I was spending 16 to 20 hours (a day in casinos) – me, a person, who wouldn’t even spend one minute in such a place when I

was healthy,” she said, noting that a case of post-traumatic stress disorder drove her to gamble and to lose “hundreds of thousands of dollars.” “I destroyed my life, from a decent life to homelessness – I was literally homeless...Please stop destroying families and expand any information about this addiction, which every single day is killing many innocent, brilliant, talented people, and robbing bread from the throats of innocent children by the money their ill, addicted parents are stealing and taking to casinos.” Both the Medical Officer of Health and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) are expected to weigh in on the casino at Woodbine debate – with the Medical Officer of Health to report to the June 1 meeting of the board of health on any public health impacts of expanding gaming at Woodbine, and CAMH to receive from Ontario Lottery and Gaming data related to gambling, with the purpose of developing a “better understanding of problem gambling in host communities.” From there, Peter Notaro, the city’s director of Corporate Intergovermental and Agency Relations, said the city manager’s office is expected to come back to the Executive Committee at its June 30 meeting with a report. And if given the greenlight at Executive Committee, the report will then go to Toronto City Council for a decision on July 7. Bruce MacLean makes his 104th birthday celebration a group affair with friends at Evangel Hall Mission JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com At 104 years old, Bruce MacLean has lived a long and happy life. On Wednesday, May 6, he celebrated his birthday the same way he’s celebrated each of his last few – sharing some good cheer with members of Evangel Hall Mission. MacLean, who lives in Etobicoke and winters in Florida, has marked every birthday since his 101st at the mission, ensuring the celebration is shared by those whose birthdays often go forgotten. “It’s sort of been a joint venture between Evangel Hall and myself to recognize all the birthdays of all the people who come here normally,” said the spry centenarian. “Most of them never have any birthday recognition, so this is an opportunity to share a birthday with them.” The former University of Toronto professor of mathematics remains active, and in recent years, he has

been able to focus on his golf game. “I’ve spent the last 33 consecutive winters in Florida and I’ve played

a lot of golf down there,” he said. “I play golf up here too when the weather cooperates.” MacLean has lived in Toronto

his entire life, with the exception of a stint in the Navy during the Second World War, and has lived in the same family home in Etobicoke since 1927. He chose Evangel Hall Mission, near Bathurst and Adelaide streets, to celebrate and share his birthday after a long-standing relationship with the organization. “I’ve been a supporter of Evangel Hall for a long time and I know the calibre of work they do,” he said. MacLean’s daughter, Linda Ann Jewell, said MacLean first got involved with Evangel Hall through the Presbyterian Church of Canada. On his birthday each year, he covers the cost of a massive roast beef dinner and two large cakes for more than 100 mission members. The centenarian has a few words of wisdom when it comes to longevity. “The big thing I’ve always said is ‘moderation in everything,’” he said. “Good food, lots of exercise and lots of good friends.”

When it comes time for his birthday celebration, while MacLean wants to shine a light on the mission, its work and those who use its services, there’s little question he’s the man of the hour. “It’s absolutely fantastic to have this every year,” said Evangel Hall Mission member and volunteer Guy Markle. “He comes in and everybody cheers for him and claps for him.” “He’s 104 years old and he’s still doing well. He’s a spunky old guy.” MacLean plans to continue his birthday tradition for as long as he keeps having birthdays, enjoying the opportunity to share his special day with those who often don’t get to celebrate birthdays of their own. “Life is pretty good,” he said. “It’s only right to share that with others.”

How to Select Your Home Improvement Contractor The Certified Contractors Network (CCN) is an independent, North American organization focused on increasing the professionalism in the contacting industry, as well educating homeowners on how to select a professional contractor. CCN states that “the critical factor in a successful contracting project is selecting the right contractor”. With the multitude of home renovation shows now on television, home owners are learning that not all renovations go as they had hoped. Most dissatisfied construction project victims limit their investigation focus to “How much will it cost?” even though studies clearly show that most dissatisfaction involves the lower bid contractors.

The CCN suggests selecting a contractor that can show you in writing all of the following criteria: • Has a permanent place of business and is licensed. • Has a minimum of $2,000,000 in liability insurance and complete worker’s compensation coverage (WSIB). Homeowners may be liable for uninsured contractors. • Staff are trained and certified by the manufacturer. • Installs products according to all of the manufacturer’s specifications to validate the product warranty.

mark. In fact, The Polish Chamber Of Commerce honoured him with its prestigious entrepreneur of the year award on April 23 at the Pearson Convention Centre. “We are overjoyed and honored that Chris is getting the award for all the great work he’s done in the business all these years – not only as supplier of linens to the top hotels in the GTA, but also through his philanthropic work with many charities,” said Elizabeth Niemiec, managing director of The Polish Chamber Of Commerce. Hailing from the northeastern city of Bialystok, Poland, Jakubowski had merchant blood in his veins. “I always had a desire to sell and succeed. When I was a little boy, six years old or so, I had a store: my father’s barn. Here, I was selling candy and other goods to the kids and sometimes the adults, while making a healthy profit,” chuckled Jakubowski. Driven with the entrepreneurial

“Look: Everybody needs linen.” So says Chris Jakubowski, a.k.a ‘Mr. Linen,’ the bespectacled president and owner of Etobicoke-based Mega City Linen, Canada’s largest independent linen and rental supply company. “If you have a wedding, or some kind of an event, you need linens for lots of things – like napkins, rags, chair covers, runners, bed sheets. We supply whatever you need,” explained Jakubowski in a recent interview. Ever the uber salesman, Jakubowski is a born huckster. “Chris? Man, he can sell you anything,” said Mark, a long-time employee. Twenty-five years after launching his business, garnering a base of more than 1,000 clients, like the Metro Convention Centre, while establishing himself as the premier leader in the linen supply and rental business, Jakubowski has made his

spirit to sell, he realized that the Communist regime there was not conducive to him. Arriving in Toronto, Canada in the

fall of 1990 at age 22, Jakubowski took on his first job in linens. “I worked in a linen factory, where I stacked linens, unloaded the trucks and other jobs,” he explained. Around this time, Jakubowski was mapping out his future. “I had a vision. I came at a time where I knew this was a business I was going to excel at.” Excel he did. After several grueling years of learning the business, at times too tired to go home, he would even sleep in the linen bins. “Number 14. The blue one,” he said. In the late ’90s, Jakubowski decided to take the leap in his first foray as a businessman and launched Mega City Linen. “I wanted the company to be known as something strong. Someone they can count on. When I started, I saw vendors who didn’t take care of their clients. I wanted to change that. It’s because of the clients, we stay in business,” Jakubowski said. Getting a loan from a credit union, he started with just four people in a

compact 3,000 square foot facility in Etobicoke at 99 Advance Rd. Now years later, with a massive 63,000 square foot facility on Albion Road near Hwy. 27, Mega City employs between 65 to 100 people. “We are a family-owned business and always will be,” Jakubowski points out. Mega City has grown in stature and has diversified with other venues. “We have expanded to include our WEDS – Wedding Event Design Studio, a flower and accessories line, not to mention our newly added limousine service. Believe me when I say we are your one-stop event shop. I promise you, you won’t leave here empty handed,” Jakubowski said. Jakubowski displays no signs of slowing down. “We’ve had several offers to sell out but I built this from scratch and I want to see it grow to amazing heights,” he said.

Don’t let your children flip flop through the summer Most kids can’t wait for the weeks of long, hot, carefree days spent in flip flops at camps, cottages and parks. But while the fresh air and unstructured play can be excellent for a child’s development, foot experts say that weeks of roaming in ill-fitting, unstructured flip flops can lead to foot, ankle and knee injuries. “Basic, flimsy flip flops don’t provide the support that children need when they are running, jumping and playing,” says Anne Putnam, a Canadian certified pedorthist and president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada. “Proper fitting, supportive shoes are essential for the healthy growth and development of children’s feet, and although shoe rules can slacken a bit in the summer, they shouldn’t be completely forgotten.” During the summer, pedorthists recommend that children wear footwear that balances ease with comfort and support. As children are always on the go they like shoes they can quickly take on and off. Parents are advised to look for sandals with velcro straps as they are quick and easy to get into and secure the foot snuggly in the shoe as effectively as laces. For daily play, a pair of lightweight, supportive sandals with a flex-point at the ball of the foot is

essential. Most importantly the sandals should fit perfectly, as shoes that are too big or too small increase the risk of injury. Children can wear unsupportive flip flops at the beach and by the pool, but flip flops are not appropriate for active play or walking any distance. Here are some tips from Canadian certified pedorthists to help you find appropriate summer footwear for your child: • Look for shoes that have sturdy backs and soles that don’t bend easily if you twist them from side to side or from toe to heel. Shoes that don’t bend or twist will provide the support your child needs. • Make sure the base of the footwear matches the length and shape of your child’s feet. If his or her feet are too wide or his or her heel or toes hang over the edge, they are not right. • Don’t buy shoes with “room to grow”. Shoes that are too long or too wide may cause or aggravate underlying foot problems. • Never pass shoes down from child to child as the wear patterns created by the first child will not properly support the next child’s unique foot shape and needs, which could result in foot, ankle or knee injuries. .

• If your child insists on flip flops for everyday wear, look for features that provide more support, such as supportive footbeds, adjustable straps, thicker soles and deep heel cups.

Beat Lower Back, Disc And Sciatic Pain Now

hankfully, new natural treatment methods help many find the relief they had been searching for. Sciatica is a painful condition that affects the sciatic nerve. The pain usually radiates into one or both buttocks, descends the back of the leg and can sometime be felt in the foot. It is often a severe, knife-like pain, but can also be noticed as numbness or tingling in the leg and foot. It is unpredictable and does not go away even when you change positions or lay down. Sciatica can result from years of poor posture, muscle strain, pregnancy, excess weight, wearing high heels, or sleeping on a very soft mattress. Sciatica is often a symptom of a slipped disc, pinched nerve or arthritis. Although pain pills may temporarily cover up the symptoms, our holistic approach can provide a more effective, long term relief. “Our team members apply their individual skills and knowledge to make an accurate diagnosis and administer the right treatment that will get the best result for each patient.”

Dr. Peter Ng has a special interest in natural pain relief and Chinese medicine.

Vintage streetcars to stay off the tracks this summer If you were looking forward to hopping on the TTC’s vintage streetcar fleet this summer, get ready for some bad news. The Presidents’ Conference Committee or PCC streetcar, was a staple of Toronto transit 60 years ago, and the TTC has kept two of the vehicles in operation for some summer service, usually running on the Harbourfront 509. But with last year’s brutal winter requiring intense maintenance of the well-past-itsprime regular streetcar fleet TTC spokesperson Brad Ross admitted on Twitter, there just wasn’t enough time to get the PCCs up and running in time for the summer. Pity. SHAPE FUTURE OF city’s BIKE PLAN wHELP

Toronto city staff are asking the public to weigh in on plans to expand the city’s bare-bones cycling network. Between now and Friday, May 29 you can fill out a short online survey seeking input on how and where to add more bike infrastructure as part of a

While the purpose of updating the plan is expanding and filling the gaps for downtown routes the plan also hopes to add cycling infrastructure in the suburbs, plans for which have stalled over the last 14 years. The vehicles are wrapped in blue and re-branded as Line 3 in the TTC’s numberbased line hierarchy, and more changes are promised including better lighting and an improved seating configuration to provide cramped riders with some badly needed space.

At the City, we’re doing our part by plex underground continually updating and maintaining Toronto’s complex pipes, sewers and catch basins. Now it’s your turn. Here are some tips to help you flood-proof your home.

Fix cracks in your foundation.

Ensure the ground slopes away from your house.

Clear debris from eavestroughs and downspouts.

New playground finally coming to Silverhill Park School board and city to enter new 12-year licensing agreement SAM JURIC etg@insidetoronto.com The wait is over for residents hoping for a new playground in Silverhill Park. Resident Angela DiamanteKaravas has been pushing for the city to revamp the park since 2007 and has attended community meetings about it for the past four years. She was pregnant with her son when she first began advocating for the improvements to Silverhill Park. Her son is now eight years old. “I’ve been to every meeting. I put everything I had into this,” she said. Diamante-Karavas speaks passionately about the need for a better playground in the neighbourhood. “This playground is important because there are more and more children in the area but there is no established park in the area. There is so much greenspace that hasn’t been utilized until now.” After waiting years to refurbish the space, which is owned by the Toronto D i s t r i c t S c h o o l B o a rd (TDSB), and leased by the City of Toronto, residents were told at a public meeting Monday night a new licensing agreement would be struck and put in place for 12 years. Jeff Latto, senior manager of Major Capital Projects and Building Partnerships for the TDSB, confirmed to a crowd of approximately 40 people gathered at St. Elizabeth Catholic School that an agreement is set to be signed by June 17. Due to the uncertainty of whether the city would get to retain the lease, longtime plans for refurbishing the park have been on hold. Resident Margaret Lyons, 76, has been telling her granddaughter about the

Residents have been pushing to improve the play equipment at Silverhill for eight years.

plans for a playground since she was an infant. “I told her someday they’ll put a playground here. She’s now five,” Lyons said. The meeting was hosted by Ward 5 Councillor Justin Di Ciano who echoed the sentiments that residents have waited too long. The Silverhill Park partnership between the TDSB and the City of Toronto has been nothing if not unusual. “We have a very unique situation where we have the City of Toronto building on land that isn’t ours,” Di Ciano said. Those in attendance were invited to offer feedback on the selection of new play equipment. TDSB Trustee Pamela Gough spoke of the need for upgrades to the park. “Greenspace in general is very important to neighbourhoods. Parks are really important. They are community gathering places.” Both the TDSB and City of Toronto have agreed to set a target completion date of October for the new playground and Gough said she’s sure it’s feasible. Be s i d e s t h e o u t d o o r space, the site also includes a former public school that’s currently being used by the Etobicoke Year-Round Alternative Centre. With a new playground next door available for use by the general public, concern was raised for the safety of students at the school. Latto responded that

student safety and security would be a priority. Access to the playground during school hours would be limited to students only, he said. Di Ciano echoed Latto’s promises with regards to the playground: “It will be safe, it will be clean and it will be maintained.” Some residents remained skeptical and raised concerns over the TDSB potentially being able to sell the property and break the agreement. Latto assured residents that once signed, the agreement would be ironclad, preventing the TDSB from selling the property through the duration of the agreement. The TDSB expects population growth over the next decade in Etobicoke which has contributed to the school board’s decision to continue to hold on to the property and insist on a licensing agreement over a leasing agreement. A leasing agreement has traditionally been used when the property involved was not being used by the TDSB. However, because the space will be shared by both the TDSB and the city a licensing agreement has been set in place. Money to build the park, $358,000, has already been secured by the city. However, residents were told the TDSB has no plans to dismantle the playground even if the agreement is not

Richard Graves, 82, has plenty of Pan Am Path art relay launch miles, medals, on his odometer michele mclean Etobicoke athlete of the month for May Richard Graves began running 37 years ago because of a weight problem. Richard who is 82 years old explained that he used to smoke cigarettes and when he quit smoking he gained so much weight that he had to have his suits tailor-made. Enough was enough and he began to run for exercise to lose the weight. Graves currently runs 12 months a year, four days a week and trains approximately 32-40 kilometres a week. He has participated in more than 900 races in many parts of the world including the United States and the United Kingdom. He is an internationally renowned runner who has placed first, second or third in most of his races in his age category and has a shrine of over 600 race medals in his Etobicoke

home. Last year, he ran the Toronto half marathon and finished in two hours and twenty minutes and claims

he’s slower than he used to be because of a few new aches and pains. After 60,000 miles Richard credits his running to his good health and is very happy he took up running when he did. When he is not running, Richard loves to dance. “Some people will never come remotely close to running that much in their lifetime. Richard is such an inspiration and a true ambassador to good health and I look very forward to going for a run with him in the near future,” said Joanne Noble, chair of the board for the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame.
