Somali ‘leaders’ make strides

Brentwood library opens today after $8M in renovations TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com An $8 million renovated and expanded Brentwood library branch opens today after a two-year closure. The modern building by Diamond Schmitt Architects Inc. is made up mostly of windows and is flooded with sunlight throughout its collections, urban living rooms with fireplaces, reading lounges and group and quiet study spaces. The Montgomery Road-area library is now fully accessible with an elevator and accessible washrooms on both floors. A community open house takes place today from 4 to 8:30 p.m. with a stilt-walker, magician, balloon-making, live music by a local jazz trio and refreshments provided by Toronto Public Library Foundation. Brentwood Branch’s KidsStop Interactive Early Literacy Centre is the first of its kind in an Etobicoke library. Exploring the Alphabet is its theme, with letter and word activities for children up to five years of age. A giant b and d letter houses buttons, a baseball, as well as dice and a dinosaur. A lifesize book sits on the wall for small children to read through. A purple ‘p’ provides a puppet show. A yellow ‘j’ lists French words that begin with ‘j’ such as jaune and joen. “You’ve got to take steps to get where you want.” That simple lesson, learned in high school, is one 24-year-old Zach Omar applied on Wednesday night when he and a group of SomaliCanadian youth from Etobicoke’s Dixon Road neighbourhood joined with police officers for a community walkabout. The Halloween outing, said Const. Roger Mayers, was the culminating event of a two-week Somali Youth Leadership/Mentoring Initiative, funded by Proaction Cops and Kids and aimed at building better relationships between police and Somali youth. “Basically, we met with between 15 to 25 young men aged 16 to 20 from the Somali-Canadian community over the last two weeks and spoke with them about a number of issues – from crime in the community, to the difference between Somali culture and Canadian culture, and the struggles youth are facing with juggling those two cultures,” Mayers said, noting that officers from 23 Division and TAVIS were involved. >>>walkabouts, page 5

TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Lacrosse phenom Tanner Thomson has earned his ticket to ride. The 16-year-old Etobicoke athlete has committed to attend Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., on a full lacrosse scholarship. Recently awarded the 2012 OLA Minor Field Lacrosse “Offensive Player of the Year” Award, Thomson is considered one of the most creative players at the high school level in Ontario, said his St. Michael’s College School Varsity Blue Gaels’ coach Alex Frescura. Recruited to a few schools, Thomson chose Marquette. He has yet to choose his course of study. In August, Thomson helped Team Ontario to the national lacrosse midget title, including a 9-5 win over British Columbia in the championship game. Thomson contributed five goals and seven assists throughout the eight-game championship tourney. It marked his second taste of national gold as he was also on the Ontario bantam team back in 2010 that also won a national title. Thomson is the oldest of four brothers who all play competitive lacrosse with the Mimico Mountaineers program. His Mom, Amanda, said Tanner began playing lacrosse by age 4. “His Dad (Tim) is an exceptionally talented athlete,” Amanda Thomson said. “All the boys are very talented. Tanner has had some great coaches and teammates that he looks up to. Mimico (Mountaineers) has been a huge resource for him. The Edge travelling Ontario team has given him opportunities to play in the States.” Thomson’s mother lauded his coaches: Mimico Mountaineers’ coach John Grimes, son of Councillor Mark Grimes, The Edge coach Marc Burton, and the Gaels’ Frescura. Thomson will join the Marquette Golden Eagles lacrosse program in 2014. The team competes in the renowned Big East Conference.

EGH receives tops marks nationally TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com William Osler Health System is one of only a few elite hospitals across Canada to receive top marks from a national organization that measures patient safety and health-care quality. Etobicoke General Hospital and Brampton Civic Hospital were recently awarded an exemplary standing accreditation designation, the highest level possible from Accreditation Canada, said a statement from William Osler Health System, which operates the two hospitals. highest possible level The designation means an organization has achieved the highest

possible level of performance and quality on 2,710 standards. The two Osler hospitals met all of Accreditation Canada’s required organizational practices related to patient safety, and 98.4 per cent of the 2,710 standards. “A little less than 10 per cent of hospitals across Canada receive this designation. We’re very, very excited about it,” Osler President and CEO Matthew Anderson said in an interview. “It’s a really great acknowledgement of our staff. It shows what we do every day, our staff is so committed to patient care. It’s a great achievement for our staff and for the community.” Etobicoke’s other hospital, the newly merged Credit Valley Hospital and Trillium Health Centre, will undertake its first joint accredita-

tion process next November, hospital officials said. In 2010, Accreditation Canada awarded Trillium a three-year accreditation with no conditions and recognized it for six leading practices. Accreditation Canada recently acknowledged Osler’s hospitals for a number of its initiatives, three of which earned leading practice designations. end-of-visit survey Osler provides iPads to emergency department patients at the end of their visit to learn about their experience. Paid students conduct the surveys with patients from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. five to seven days a week at each hospital. Osler palliative care, or end-of-

life, and oncology staff acquired cultural competency skills in serving a diverse population of patients to take into account a patient’s beliefs, values and practices in end-oflife care. Where there is potential for conflict or challenge, cultural negotiation takes place to meet the needs of both the patient/family and the clinician. A falls’ prevention pilot program in one hospital unit uncovers issues and barriers to improve and enhance falls’ prevention among patients in both hospitals. Osler received the exemplary standing designation immediately after its onsite survey was conducted, a rare achievement, hospital officials said. Many hospitals meet the grade only after making improvements identified in the onsite survey.

Facility use for everyone

The Etobicoke Guardian is published every Thursday and Friday at 175 Gordon Baker Rd., Toronto, ON M2H 0A2, by Toronto Community News, a Division of Metroland Media Group Ltd.

To the editor: Re: ‘Shut Out: Community groups struggle to find affordable space with permit fee increase,’ Special Report, Oct. 25. The politicians who have been elected to council and the Toronto District School Board would have us believe there is no money available to make these community resources available for the people of Toronto. They want us to believe that individual users and teams will have to pay more to use our public facilities. That is not true. I believe the city has the money to provide use of these facilities for free. If we want to continue to have healthy communities all across Toronto, the people have to speak up so politicians do not allocate our resources to the highest bidder. Allan Baker

Fight crime by being involved ‘E

ngaged Communities Prevent Crime.’ This is the theme of Crime Prevention Week launched today, which is run by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. Give credit where it’s due: local police divisions have done a good job keeping the community engaged through their various social media accounts. Upcoming car seat clinic dates are posted on Scarborough’s 41 Division Facebook page, a video on home security tips can be found on Etobicoke’s 22 Division page, and a link our view to local crime statistics is provided on North York’s 31 Connect with Division page. Kudos to the individual police officers who have taken your community advantage of social media for safety’s sake interacting with community members through their own personal accounts. Const. Glenn Jones from 31 Division is constantly on Twitter, telling the public what program he’s involved with, where he’s going to be, and thanking his followers. Staff Sgt. Kim Scanlan of 23 Division in Etobicoke also tweets regularly, most recently providing tips on having a safe Halloween, and posting photos of local community events she’s attended. Twitter followers of media officer Wendy Drummond would have known to avoid Eglinton Avenue East near McCowan Road in a timely manner due to a gas leak on Halloween. Being more social has helped build a more positive relationship between law enforcement and the public they’re charged to serve and protect. And they’re not hard to find. Just follow the Toronto Police Twitter feed at twitter.com/ TorontoPolice or subscribe to their Facebook page at facebook.com/TorontoPolice to see who’s online. Of course, being engaged also means being connected with those living in your community. While keeping an open dialogue on the web can be useful, there’s no substitute for being active in the neighbourhood. So use the Internet to organize a community event or look for one nearby, then take the next step to attend and get involved with local activities. Crime prevention is a shared responsibility. Crime Prevention Week, a province-wide initiative, officially runs between Nov. 4 to 10 this year. But as you wouldn’t normally stop checking emails, surfing the web or logging into Facebook after just one week, crime prevention and being engaged with your community should be a yearround practice. Council comprises on ombudsman’s contract

A

gain? The frustrations of our mayor once again spilled over, this time after steady needling by the city ombudsman accusing him first of meddling in the civics appointment process and advising she needed more staff during the preliminary budget review. Her colleague, the integrity commissioner, has joined the ombudsman in the mayoral doghouse by pointing out the mayor’s staff were assigned to support the mayor’s private interest in a school football team, plus expenses for their cellphones and city automobiles. Most recently, she criticized the mayor’s and his brother’s disparaging personal remarks about the medical officer of health. The discussion on the adequacy of the apology underlined the brothers’ visceral belief the actions are politically motivated. The third member in the doghouse is the city’s lobbyist registrar, who questioned recent lobbyist activities. At this council meeting, the mayor thought he had

an opportunity to strike back. Using the opportunity to consider a contract extension for the ombudsman, the mayor and some of his allies thought it advisable to schedule the end of her term at the same time as her colleagues. If the contracts of these three ended at the same time, reasoned the mayor, then they could all be replaced at once, perhaps with a single consultant. Even if the mayor’s plan was in the public interest, which I do not think it is, and even if the mayor had the votes for council’s approval, which he did not, his plan was not even in his own interest. The first rule of politics is to remain consistent. In the mayor’s case, he must be the conductor to stop the gravy train. He cannot condone what his supporters will see as

excessive or self-serving spending. As examples of what to avoid, both council and the public still recall the mess examined by Madame Justice Bellamy during the MFP inquiry of the past decade. Her inquiry cost $19 million directly, plus she found the city paid more than over $40 million in equipment and software than it planned or was necessary. The municipal watchdogs the mayor seeks to muzzle came from a widespread revulsion for what was revealed during that inquiry. Yet these municipal watchdogs have found small, but real examples of similar behaviour. Even leaving aside the public interest, attacking these guardians after they found doubtful practices around the mayor creates dissonance in the mayor’s key message and uncertainty in the minds of his core supporters. For the mayor, the next major problem in this issue is that it shows his inability to form a complex policy that council will approve. His inflammatory position of replacing the three posi-

tions with a consultant did nothing but prove that the mayor has no desire to find an acceptable position. That council overwhelmingly approved a compromise, a two-year renewal of the ombudsman’s contract, was due to Councillor Karen Stintz’s tireless background work and willingness to let the mayor take the credit. Despite the halfday lost in argument and embarrassment, positives did come out of the debate. In terms of public policy, council strongly supported the ombudsman, integrity commissioner and lobbyist registrar. Secondly, neither the mayor’s side, nor his opposition, has enough votes without the other. If a major measure is to be passed, there must be compromise. Although the process was painful and sometimes the final resolution was in doubt, at the end, the biggest positive of all was council came to a reasonable decision. n David Soknacki is a former City of Toronto councillor and budget chief. O m a r ’s m o s t r e c e n t endeavor was to assist Toronto police with bridging the gap between its officers and Somali youth – a divide accentuated by the recent spate of murders of young Somali men (six have been killed on Toronto streets since June) and the community’s reluctance to come forward with information. “When they’re hurting, people in the community feel they can’t lean on the police,” said Omar, adding,

“I’ve met a lot of officers who are standup guys.” And that’s precisely the realization police hope more youth in Toronto’s Somali community will come to as a result of the Somali Youth Leadership/Mentoring Initiative, Mayers said. The young men who participated, he added, risked being labelled ‘snitches’ by their peers for simply speaking with officers. “They had to deal with a lot of peer pressure, and the walkabout was the biggest of the peer pressure – these boys stepped up and they walked side by side with police...to show their peers that this is okay to do,” he said, noting that police didn’t ask any of the participants for any information about any crimes. “We want to build relationships with these boys in the community first and foremost – that’s the priority here. A trusting relationship is far more important before we move forward, and that’s what this was all about.” ~ With files from Torstar news service

Omar’s history of community involvement, he said, began in high school with a complaint to his principal that there weren’t enough recreational opportunities in his neighbourhood for teens to partake in after school. Hearing Omar out, that principal challenged him to create a program for youth, and if he was successful, he’d be given access to the high school gym to run it. “Zach took the challenge and actually did a sporting event, which took place in his school gym as promised. Baker wins TV competition Brownies recipe to be sold as President’s Choice product

Up, up and away

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Etobicoke’s Tracey Rigden turned a ‘hot mess’ of an experience in the Recipe to Riches kitchen into a ‘sweet success’ with her recipe for salt-kissed dulce de leche brownies. The New Toronto law clerk competed against bakers from across the country to win the Food Network Canada reality cooking show’s Cookies and Squares competition – along with its $25,000 cash prize – in an episode that aired on Wednesday. For Rigden, the whole Recipe to Riches experience was a challenge that put her totally outside her comfort zone – especially the batchup challenge, where she had to supersize her recipe for 26 brownies into one that made 1,000 of her decadent delights. “I nearly had a heart attack when I found out I had to make a thousand. And I felt my stomach drop when we were told we had to do it in three hours,” she exclaimed. “I normally take three hours just to make one little itty bitty batch of 26 brownies in my kitchen.” Despite Rigden’s misgivings about her performance – and more than a little bit of burnt dulce de leche – the judges gave her rave reviews. “I think the combination of salt and chocolate really adds a nice twist to a familiar

brownie,” said judge Tony Chapman, founder and CEO of Capital C advertising agency. After tasting success in the batch-up round, Rigden then moved forward to the product launch challenge, where she had to host an event at downtown Toronto’s Atrium to introduce her product to the masses. Playing off a motif of decadence, Rigden planned a 1940s glamour themed launch – complete with showgirls, fountains and tuxedoed and white-gloved servers dishing out her brownies on silver platters. A naturally outgoing and bubbly personality, Rigden was in her element mingling with her potential customers – a fact that didn’t escape judge Chapman’s attention. “What I really liked about your event was you,” he said. “You smiled, you laughed, you

were gregarious. You should be very proud of how you ran your event.” Galen Weston, executive chairman of Loblaw Companies, agreed with those numbers, lauding Rigden’s recipe for its trendiness. “It’s perfectly on trend as far as decadent desserts are concerned...” he said, shortly before announcing Rigden as the night’s winner. “Tracey, I don’t think we can deny Canadians your perfect President’s Choice product anymore.” For Rigden, who was in tears upon learning of her triumph, it’s a toss up as to which of her prizes is most prized: the $25,000 cash reward or having her recipe made into a President’s Choice product. “This whole experience has been unbelievable. I can’t describe how it makes me feel. I’m very proud and humbled that I was able to do this.” Rigden’s recipe is now in the running for Recipe to Riches grand prize of $250,000. Anyone wishing to meet Rigden and try her Salt-Kissed Dulce de Leche Brownie are invited to the Loblaw’s store at 380 The East Mall this Saturday, Nov. 3 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rigden isn’t the only Etobian competing in this season of Recipe to Riches. Etobicoke’s Mary Rocto will give the judges a chance to sample her jerk chicken buns on the Nov. 14 episode.

Truth be told, women have a way with words Theatre Etobicoke stages Five Women Wearing the Same Dress MARIA TZAVARAS etg@insidetoronto.com

W

eddings are one of those occasions that are equally loved and loathed. While the witnessing of two people proclaiming their forever love surrounded by their friends and family sounds idyllic, often times that’s not the case. Wedding’s usually consist of a room full of strangers, consuming food that may or may not be good. Add alcohol to the mix, prepare yourself for an unpleasant incident or two.

Taking a departure from their usual farces, Theatre Etobicoke is currently staging a more edgy and outspoken comedy that reminds us how weddings can bring out the cynic in us all. Five Women Wearing the Same Dress, by Alan Ball, is a show about five bridesmaids who have a lot more on their minds than the wedding they’re attending. They dislike the bride and the dresses they have to wear and each have a bone to pick with life. At weddings, the real party is usually somewhere other than in the actual

reception. In this show, the action takes place in the bedroom of the bride’s sister Meredith. The bridesmaids have gathered there during the reception that’s taking place downstairs in the family’s lavish home in Knoxville, Tennessee. Each has a distinct personality: Meredith (Laura Piccinin), is the angry little sister, Frances (Janice Kiteley) the good Christian, Trisha (Erin Jones), treats men as a pastime, Georgeanne (Catherine Weich), who loathes her loveless marriage and Mindy (Julia Hendrik), a les-

bian who is happy with herself despite some resistance from her Southern family. Together, these girls are oil and water, outspoken and honest, and you see what happens when women who have known each other their whole lives get together and mix in some truth-serum inducing drinking. What you get are loads of issues, good, bad and humourous, coming to the surface. There’s a lot of swearing, drinking and loud proclamations in this show, as these women share their lives, hopes and truths. This

REVIEW show could be called ‘Let’s Be Honest’ as these women hold nothing back, nor do the women who perform these colourful characters. The performances are fantastic in this show and each character will resonate with you in a different way. They will make you laugh, think and most importantly, entertain you with their candor, energy and Southern accents – everything is funnier when said in an accent. This is truly one of those shows that you have to watch rather than be told what it’s about. But it’s a relatable show in that everyone seeks out true

happiness in life, but sometimes that journey can be hindered by expectations, responsibilities and being complacent to what your life has become. These ladies show us it’s never too late to rewrite your future. This is a great girls night out show and the perfect show for guys to get a glimpse into the deep, sometimes complicated, minds of women. Five Women Wearing the Same Dress has three more performances: Nov. 2, 3 and 4 at 8 p.m. at the Assembly Hall, 1 Colonel Samuel Smith Park Drive. Tickets are $22. To order them, please visit www.theatreetobicoke.com

City issues warning after fake health inspectors visit restaurants DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Phony health inspectors are talking restaurant owners into buying $300 first-aid kits, and the city’s public health department is urging Torontonians not to fall for the scam. According to a news release by Toronto Public Health (TPH), both the health depart-

ment and Toronto police have received several calls from businesses who have been contacted by people claiming to be Toronto Public Health inspectors. The fake inspectors tell the restaurant owners they must purchase a first-aid kit for $300 from them. Health inspectors don’t sell first-aid kits, said Jim Chan, a food safety manager with

Toronto Public Health. “Legitimate public health inspectors do not call ahead to schedule inspections. In most cases, inspections are unannounced. As well, TPH inspectors do not sell first-aid kits to food operators,” said Chan. To verify the identity of inspectors, operators can contact Toronto Public Health at 416-338-7600.

Return to school signals return to sport of choice: soccer DAVID GROSSMAN etg@insidetoronto.com Noel Ellerton insists he has no regrets. Returning to school can be a challenge, even for a 27-year-old who has been away from the classroom atmosphere the past four years, but the Etobicoke resident had a feeling the timing was just right. When work started to slow a bit with the contracting firm he had been employed with, Ellerton thought he could return to George Brown College and enhance his education with one more year and get a Diploma in the Construction Engineering Program. Ellerton was up for the challenge. Have a chat with him and he’ll fill your ear with some tough personal times. So going back to school was relatively simple. His mother, a former teacher working with developmentally handicapped children, passed away from cancer when he was 12. His father, who worked in trades and was a roofer, died from a heart attack a

Photo/MICHAEL STEFANIUK

Etobicoke resident Noel Ellerton plays varsity soccer at George Brown College and was recently awarded the honour of Athlete of the Week.

few years ago. That left him with a brother and sister. And then there’s soccer, something Ellerton said his mother signed him up for as a tot. His father was a huge supporter watching him play. “I thought about packing up soccer after he (father) died,” recalled Ellerton, who had a broken hand at

the time. “But I knew he wanted me to keep playing. I remember during a Serbian White Eagles game that I saw a rainbow over the field. “I will never forget it. I ended up scoring the winner in that game.” Ellerton has thrived in the sport for years as an elite player with the Serbian team that plays in the Canadian Soccer League and

Toronto Celtic of the Ontario Soccer League. “I’m a strong person and learn from experience,” said the 5-foot-10 Ellerton, who was hoping his final year of college eligibility would end with a winning season and maybe a medal. “We had bigger aspirations, but they didn’t work out that way. I did what I could, but I am seeing that younger kids are not learning the game as well. Many are not as hungry to go work hard and tend to give up easily.” As the all-time leading scorer for George Brown College, Ellerton was hoping his enthusiasm for the game along with his quickness and knowledge just might improve the Huskies winless season from a year ago. Turns out, Ellerton kept scoring, but that was missing from the rest of the team as the Huskies finished the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) season out of the playoffs, in last place and with a 0-6-2 record. In eight games, George Brown could only score eight goals and four came from the foot of the ace forward. He ended his OCAA career with an

impressive 41 goals and after George Brown tied top-ranked Algonquin College of Ottawa 2-2 and La Cite College of Ottawa 3-3 on the same weekend, he was chosen the OCAA’s athlete of the week. Opposing teams quickly clued in to Ellerton and it was lights out for George Brown and diminished scoring chances for their top scorer. “Sure it was frustrating – just one of those years,” he said. “How can it not be disappointing when your team doesn’t win a game?” But there was something new for him to add to his resume: playing goal – and stopping a penalty shot in a game won by Seneca 2-0. It happened when George Brown’s starting goalkeeper received a red card and Ellerton offered to take over in net. “It’s so different from hockey that has a smaller net and many times you can adjust,” explained Ellerton, who wasn’t wearing goalie gloves. “In soccer, it’s a gamble. I guessed and figured I would move to the right and I won and stopped the shot. Other than scoring, that was about the biggest highlight.”
