Six days after two TTC buses were diverted to transport a high school football team coached by Mayor Rob Ford, a spokesperson for Toronto police commented on the role of five officers in the ongoing controversy. Speaking to reporters Tuesday afternoon at 23 Division in north Etobicoke, Supt. Ron Taverner said he had spoken at length with the officers – including a sergeant who requested the TTC send a bus to Father Henry Carr Catholic Secondary School to pick up the players from Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School (coached by Ford) on Nov. 1 – and was confident they had made the right call. Approximately 50 passengers were asked to leave a bus servicing the 36 Finch West route due to the request. A further bus was diverted from the 46 Martin Grove route when the first driver couldn’t locate the school. According to the TTC no passengers were aboard the second bus. ne of Canada’s most decorated triathletes is turning her talents to motivational speaking and promotion of the need for cystic fibrosis research. Lisa Bentley, one of five people inducted into the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame Nov. 1, learned the significance of her 11 Ironman championships, three Canadian titles and five consecutive Ironman Australia wins through the eyes of a young boy named Carter. Bentley has a mild strain of cystic fibrosis (CF), which can make breathing difficult and cause lung infections. Carter also has CF. “Carter’s mom wrote me a note by email saying, ‘You give so much hope to people with CF because of what you do,’” said the Alderwood native. “I never understood why people said that. Then I realized, people saw I was living such a full, healthy life that there was hope.” Despite Ironman’s grueling nine-hour challenge, Bentley shared she set out at every race to simply do her best. “I grew up with a strong faith. God gave me these talents. I can’t waste them...That’s all I did. I finished what I started. I made that my goal every time I started — just get out there, use my talents and do what I could.” Make-a-Wish Foundation granted Carter’s wish to cross the finish line with Bentley during the 2007 Ironman Hawaii after a 3.86 kilometre swim, 180.25 kilometre bike ride and 42.2 kilometre run. “That race was not victorious in terms of results, but it was a victory in my heart,” Bentley said. “Carter said to me at the finish line, ‘Lisa, you can cross the finish line with me when I’m 18 and I do it.’” NHL stars Claude Lemieux and Craig Ramsay joined Bentley as this year’s athletes enshrined in the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame. Former NHL great Claude Lemieux was inducted into the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame at last week’s ceremony. A native of Montreal, Lemieux moved his family to Etobicoke from Arizona to “give our son his dream” of playing hockey on an outdoor rink.
Blue Jays for the past 31 years, acted as Master of Ceremonies for the 19th annual induction ceremony. Proceeds from the annual dinner fund scholarships presented at each year’s ceremony. Last Thursday night, $1,000 scholarships were awarded to: Humber College basketball player Maria Suriani, badminton phenom Tracy Wong, cross-country runner Darren Mancini and baseball player Tony Tedesco, Lakeshore Collegiate student Devon Jarrett and Father John Redmond student Tesse Kuhelj and Special Olympians Elisha DonagheyJohnston and Jason Gordy. Humber journalist student Chanelle Seguin was awarded the George Gross Sports Journalism Award. The hall will also present $3,000
to Special Olympics Canada. Bentley’s remarks moved the induction attendees in The Old Mill banquet room, as did an emotionally moving speech by Bendera’s daughter, Trina, that brought many to tears. Quite ill in hospital, Bendera was unable to attend the ceremony. Emotion continued to break in his daughter’s voice as she cried recalling her father’s career as founder of Centennial Cycle and Sports in 1966 and his intrinsic desire to help equip generations of children in sports. “My dad is just a likeable guy,” Trina said. “He’s honest, sincere and caring. If he met you once, he remembered your name and considered you a friend.” Bendera’s business evolved from selling hockey, baseball and lacrosse equipment, bicycles, skis,

fishing gear and curling rocks to providing promotional wear and team uniforms. Bendera is known for never refusing a request for a prize donation, sponsorship contribution, raffle sale ticket or helping hand. “He was the ultimate customer service guy,” his daughter said. “If you couldn’t pay right away, no problem. You took the item and paid for it when you could. A handshake was a business deal. The kids and their sporting needs came first.” Anselmi grew up in south Etobicoke skating in Central Arena and the old Lakeshore Lions Arena now replaced by the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence, where the Toronto Maple Leafs practice Wednesday nights. Etobicoke’s Sports Hall of Fame moved its home to the MasterCard Centre in 2010. A glass wall now displays 120 inductees across multiple sports. “It’s a real honour. I grew up idolizing these guys and now I get to work with them,” Anselmi said in an interview, mentioning Jack Dominico, George Gross Jr. and Sr., Mike Pelyk, Mark Napier, Mark Osborne, and “three of Canada’s national treasures”: Red Kelly, Johnny Bower and Paul Henderson. Anselmi accepted the induction in memory of his late father, who spent 50 years contributing to Etobicoke, including with the Queensway Minor Hockey Association. “We need to work to get the lockout resolved,” Anselmi said of immediate goals. “We started the Raptors’ season last night. We need to get Toronto FC turned around... We’ve got to hunker down and do right by our community and do right by our fans.” Lemieux won four Stanley Cups, a Canada Cup gold medal and earned a record of big game success during his 18-year NHL career. The Montreal native is one of five NHL players to win the Stanley Cup with three different teams in back-to-back seasons. Lemieux moved his family to Etobicoke from Arizona to “give our son his dream,” he said of their 13-year-old Brandon.
“One of the best memories of my life and of my son’s life is playing on an outdoor rink in Etobicoke,” Lemieux said. “There are so many rinks within five miles of where we live.” Brandon Lemieux plays with the Marlies. Last year, Lemieux was named president of the North American chapter of 4Sports and Entertainment, headquartered in Etobicoke. This year, he joined other Canadiens’ alumni in a charity game to benefit pediatric services at Etobicoke General and Brampton Civic hospitals. Florida Panthers’ assistant coach Ramsay, a self-described “shy kid”, displayed his comedic talents throughout his acceptance speech, after flying in to Toronto for the induction ceremony. Ramsay grew up in Weston and Thistletown and learned to skate on the Humber River. He said he was surprised by Mike Pelyk’s call notifying him of his Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame induction. “‘Are you surprised to hear from me?’ Mike asked me. Yes. I haven’t talked to anyone from Etobicoke since 1967.” The 1976 all-star played in 776 consecutive games with the Buffalo Sabres, the fourth-longest streak in NHL history. A broken foot forced him off the ice in 1983. But he later returned, and capped off his career by winning the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 1984–85 in recognition of his defensive skill. “In 2004 when we won the Stanley Cup, when I lifted it I blew out my shoulder. I waited 33 years to do it and I almost dropped it. “My first NHL game was against the Maple Leafs,” Ramsay recalled. “I sat on the bench and was cheering for them and had to stop. After that it was fun. We’d beat the hell out of them.” This is the 13th and final year Jim Sturino will act as chair of the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame. “It’s an honour,” Sturino said of helming the hall of fame. “I think I’ve got Etobicoke tattooed on me. My brothers and I grew up here, have our businesses here. It’s an honour to give back to the community.”

Removal of bike lanes along Jarvis a mistake

s recognition of our veterans a case of ‘out of sight, out of mind’? It shouldn’t be, but it’s a question worth asking. When it comes to Remembrance Day observance, there has been a noticeable shift in recent years. And it’s an inevitable one. Fewer and fewer veterans from earlier conflicts such as the Second World War and the Korean War are with us. Given the passage of time, there is always a risk of the importance of such observances being diluted for the next generation. This can’t our view happen. Too much has been sacrificed. But with the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan, in which Modern vets Canadians are playing and have played a significant role, we have must be given fresh, contemporary examples same honour of the struggles our veterans endure – both during and after they serve. There is greater public awareness of postbattlefield conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), that our veterans must cope with. The good news is Canadians do have strong opinions on these issues. A recent Nanos survey says 94 per cent of Canadians believe Canadians have an obligation to ensure modern veterans find meaningful employment after they’ve finished their service. Another 88.9 per cent believe that all veterans, whenever and wherever they served, should be honoured on Remembrance Day, even though 82.1 per cent of Canadians think primarily of veterans of the First World War and the Second World War on Remembrance Day. And, 51.8 per cent believe the support veterans receive for conditions such as PTSD is inadequate. The survey was released by Commissionaires, an organization dedicated to ensuring “meaningful employment opportunities” for former members of the Canadian Forces and other organizations dedicated to safety and security. Issues such as employment opportunities for veterans aren’t necessarily front of mind in our collective consciousness. But they must be part of a growing realization that any investment in our country’s defence budget must take into greater consideration the effects – physical, mental, psychological – on those who serve our country. The survey results suggest we value the contributions of our veterans and believe more should be done for them. That’s good. Getting our voices heard to enable meaningful change for our modern veterans is the next step. Reach out to your local Member of Parliament to make it known how you feel. Love of football hurting Mayor Ford
I
s it fair to say that we’re into a crisis of confidence in big municipal government in eastern Canada? Or if not government, then mayors? Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay lent some truth to this this week when he quit his job over allegations of corruption within his party – allegations he firmly denies. And here in Toronto ... well, Rob Ford’s not resigning over corruption allegations. But there are a couple of bus-loads of commuters – who stood out in the rain last Thursday after their Finch Avenue buses were rerouted to provide shelter to Ford’s football team – who probably wish he would step down. The question for Mayor Ford is just what job he should quit. And really, the best thing that he could do is follow Tremblay’s example – and quit coaching football. As absurd as it sounds, the gridiron has been the root of much of Mayor Ford’s undoing. While in interviews, he’s claimed that the biggest problems in his first two years have to do with reading and talking on the phone while driving – the

biggest problem has been what also seems to be his greatest love. Pending a judge’s ruling, the mayor could lose his job over the way he comported himself around his football charity. In the meantime, it’s made him into a truant at council, as he leaves to coach his team at Etobicoke’s Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School while council and his committee deal with key city business. And now, this business with the TTC buses that were re-routed. As I write this, it’s unclear how exactly passengers ended up being ordered off the buses so they could be re-routed. Ford says he didn’t do it.

But it becomes a matter of appearances. Ford has shown in all sorts of ways that his team is a priority for him. At times, it seems as though it’s a bigger priority than his constituents. It may well be that this isn’t so. But it also shouldn’t appear so. That is something that Tremblay understood as he resigned from office. Mayor Ford shouldn’t resign from office over his love of football. But he should recognize that it has become more than a distraction from his day job. It has cumulatively destroyed confidence in his office. To the editor: Re: ‘Jarvis Street bike lanes will be removed by November’, insidetoronto.com, Oct. 3 While I appreciate the efforts by our current councillors to try and shorten motorist’s travel time on Jarvis Street, I think the decision was a mistake. Many residents are angered by the decision, and councillors have not taken their wants and needs into consideration. Yes, there is a potential to improve travel time for motorists, but it is making the people who rely on the Jarvis Street bike lanes less safe. Also, the money that is going to be spent on the removal of the bike lanes can be used on other parts of the city. I think city council should take more thought in residents’ wants and needs that will in the end create the better city. XinYi Zhang
Daughter did part in Obama victory To the editor: My daughter Jackie lives in Hamilton County, Ohio, and campaigned diligently for President Barack Obama. She began taking an interest in politics under my influence, since much was wrong in U.S.A. and I wanted her to care about her future and my grandsons’ future in that country. I ensured my grandsons were entered in the Canadian embassy, that they have dual citizenship and that they are aware of their Canadian heritage. Both my grandsons are active in junior hockey. It was indeed gratifying to see Obama win, knowing my daughter had a small part in that win. Bus shelter protocol stays: TTC >>>from page 1 an “abundance of caution” after school officials from both teams expressed concerns for potential violence when the game was prematurely halted. “O n e t e a m re m ov e d themselves from the field but school officials thought there would be some kind of escalation in hostility,” said Taverner. “We have to rely on our people making decisions for community safety.” According to reports, the playoff football game between Don Bosco and Henry Carr was halted by the game’s referee following an altercation with a Carr coach. At the time, Bosco was leading 35-0. Taverner said his officers were told by school officials they didn’t want the Bosco players waiting at the school for their regularly scheduled bus to pick them up. Having already been advised by the officials of pre-game “dialogue” through social media between students from both schools indicating the possibility of violence, Taverner said the officers decided to exercise caution and contacted the
TTC to have the Bosco players removed immediately. He said police had no control over what bus was chosen to pick up the players. Taverner said he had also been assured by his officers the mayor had no influence over the request. He also denied the request was made out of concern that the Bosco players, still in their uniforms, would fall ill due to the inclement weather. Requests for TTC shelter buses are frequently made for emergencies but Taverner said he couldn’t recall a similar episode where police had asked for assistance to avert a potential security issue. Shortly before Taverner made his remarks, TTC CEO Andy Byford released a memo stating the TTC will continue to apply its existing shelter bus policy. “TTC staff have reviewed all aspects of our shelter bus protocol and see no need for change. The system of interagency co-operation works well between the TTC and the city’s emergency services,” said the memo which was copied to heads of the city’s emergency services including
Police Chief Bill Blair. Byford said the TTC would continue to rely on the judgement of the emergency services as the transit agency “does not have the expertise to determine what constitutes an emergency”. Byford also confirmed he received a voice message from the mayor asking for the location of the bus which had become lost trying to find the school. Though Byford was unaware of the request, he contacted the TTC’s control centre and phoned the mayor back. “I returned the mayor’s call and advised him of the status of the bus. He thanked me and the call concluded,” said Byford in Tuesday’s memo. Later on Tuesday, Byford said he had advised the mayor no TTC bus was coming to pick up the players, unaware that the police had already made a request for the bus. “I said to him there was no way I was providing a TTC bus,” said Byford. Byford said he has advised the mayor not to call his office with a “personal issue” in the future.

Mondelez’s high-density residential plans for the site have not only raised red flags at city hall, but have also raised the ire of the Toronto and York Region Labour Council, who called the Mr. Christie closure “the act of a ruthless profiteer.” “We have taken on many fights to protect employment lands, but seldom has anyone been so callous as to sacrifice the jobs of hundreds of employees in order to make money from flipping the land,” president John Cartwright said in a statement, referencing Mondelez’s plan for 27 new residential towers on the site. Stephanie Cass, manager of corporate affairs for Mondelez Canada, however, defended the company’s closure of the bakery as a strictly business decision, based on three “critical factors”: the facility’s aging infrastructure; its underutilized manufacturing capacity; and the residential development surrounding the area. The reference to the possibility of 27 condos on the site, she added, was made only as
an initial design concept “as an example of what could be accommodated, given how significant a site this is.” Also troubling about the potential Mr. Christie site redevelopment, Milczyn said, is its potential to drive out the Ontario Food Terminal, which is located immediately to the north of the bakery. “The Ontario Food Terminal is a key piece of infrastructure for the city – and it can’t really move anywhere,” he said. Losing the food terminal, Milczyn added, is something the city can’t afford – but that’s just what will happen if Mondelez’s residential redevelopment plan sets a trend in the area, forcing the terminal out. “All those properties on the west side of Park Lawn, north of the highway – all those property owners want residential, but I’ve pushed them all back saying I’m not prepared to entertain that,” he said. “We’re trying to hold a line in the sand and we’re going to do our best to do it, but the city as a whole can’t afford to lose the food terminal.”

Police hope to persuade pedestrians not to talk on cellphones or text while crossing the street as part of a week-long safety campaign launched this week. “Even though it’s not against the law, it’s a real huge safety risk,” Sgt. Jack West said on Monday. Police usually see a spike in the number of pedestrians struck by vehicles in November. The Step Up and Be Safe campaign, which ends Sunday, Nov. 11, aims to prevent that. “When one pedestrian

The rear of the refreshed Hyundai Genesis Coupe shows off new LED taillights. The interior of the 2013 Genesis Coupe is attractively laid out, with a nice mix of soft-touch materials, textures and metallic accents, along with electroluminescent instruments.
The 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is an affordable performance car aimed at the driving enthusiast. The big news is a boost in power from 306 to 348 hp for the 3.8-litre engine and 210 to 274 hp for the 2.0T. The GT comes with 19-inch alloy wheels and a bright red Brembo brake package.
This V6 makes 348 hp and 295 lb/ft of torque. The refreshed Genesis Coupe sports a more menacing demeanour with an aggressively redesigned front fascia, grille, headlights, LED daytime running lights, fog lights, and hood.
■411 ON THE GENESIS: Hyundai’s re-do of the Genesis Coupe for 2013 is much more than the nip here and a tuck there. To start with, the 2013 Genesis Coupe gets a serious power boost. Thanks in part to direct injection technology, the 3.8-litre Lambda DOHC V6 engine in the GT gains 42 horsepower to 348 and 29 lb/ft of torque to 295 that will propel the car from 0-100 km in the low five-second range. Add to that a more aggressive exterior design with new front fascia, grille, headlights, fog lights and hood design and you end up with a Genesis Coupe that has significant improvements for 2013. Other new features are retuned, low-velocity control suspension dampers, electroluminescent gauge cluster with information display, telescopic steering wheel added to the tilt function, power lumber adjustments for the driver’s seat and redesigned centre stack. The base 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine is also significantly more powerful with a new twin-scroll turbocharger and a larger, more thermally efficient intercooler. A trackready 2.0 T R-Spec model includes high-performance equipment like Brembo brakes, 19-inch wheels with summer tires, limited slip differential and a stiffer suspension. A 2.0T Premium model upgrades the interior of the standard 2.0T and adds items like touch-screen navigation system, 360-watt Infinity audio system, leather
seats with two-stage front heaters, and power sunroof. The cabin of the Genesis Coupe has a much more upscale look and feel than before. Among the new trim features is a stitched seam on the dashboard, while soft touch materials have a lower sheen for a more luxurious look. On the centre stack is a multigauge cluster with instant fuel economy, torque level (3.8 GT models) or turbocharged booster pressure (2.0T models) and oil temperature. The sport front seats have deep side bolsters for improved lateral support. Outside, 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels on the Genesis Coupe are all new for this year as are LED taillights. Even with the more muscular look, the car’s proportions are unchanged with short front and rear overhangs, creating a wedge-like profile with broad shoulders and a wide stance. Spring, damper and bushing ratings have all been recalibrated this time around for better road feel, more precise body motion control and best of all, more ride comfort. The 3.8 GT has a track-tuned suspension that offers firmer front and rear spring rates, and even with the firmer suspension, ride comfort shows a huge improvement. The Genesis Coupe was already a great car, but with the improvements for 2013, Hyundai has made it even better. – Metroland Media

Future of Woodbine Racetrack uncertain past March >>>from page 1 meeting of EYCC was a motion put forth by Etobicoke North Councillor Vincent Crisanti, asking his fellow west-end councillors to pledge their support, in principle, for a full casino at Woodbine Racetrack, which falls in his Ward 1. Back in March, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) announced two opportunities for casinos in Toronto – one in OLG’s C1 zone, which encompasses downtown Toronto, downtown Markham, and the Mississauga waterfront; and another in a C2 zone, which encompasses parts of north Etobicoke, York Region and Peel Region. “It is imperative that Woodbine Racetrack remain a viable and robust operation,” reads Crisanti’s motion. “...Notwithstanding the discussion of a casino in downtown Toronto, EYCC should stand with Ontario’s horse racing industry, local residents and community partners and support the continued viability of Woodbine Racetrack.” That ‘continued viability’ was thrown into question earlier this year when the province cancelled the Slots at Racetracks Program – which directed $345 million a year to the horse racing industry through a slot-revenue sharing partnership

The future of Woodbine (and the 7,500 jobs it provides) past March 31, 2013 – when its share of the Slots at Racetracks revenues will come to an end – now hangs in the balance, said Jane Holmes, vice-president of corporate affairs at Woodbine Entertainment Group. “As a result, Woodbine and the
horse racing industry face considerable uncertainty – but also considerable opportunity,” she said, referring to Woodbine’s desire to expand its operations to host a full-service casino on its 680-acre site at Hwy. 27 and Rexdale Boulevard. In making her argument for council’s support of Woodbine’s casino expansion, Holmes pointed to the racetrack’s 56-year track record of

employment and community support in the Rexdale community. “To say that Woodbine is a major economic generator of jobs is an understatement – our business activities result in more than 7,500 jobs in Toronto,” she said, noting that 35 per cent of Woodbine’s employees are residents of Toronto, half of whom live in Rexdale. In addition, Woodbine also donates three per cent of its net revenues to local charities, including Albion Neighbourhood Services, Pathways to Education, Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter and MicroSkills. Also speaking in support of a full casino at Woodbine on Tuesday was Supt. Ron Taverner of 23 Division. According to Taverner, contrary to the claims of many who say casinos bring with them all kinds of social ills – including an increase in crime – the experience with Woodbine has been just the opposite. “There are approximately 16,000 visitors a day to Woodbine, with virtually no interruption to the community,” he said. “With that number of people and that large an operation, there’s virtually very little crime and crime impact in that community, which speaks to the operation that is currently looking after the Woodbine entertainment
area and the security measures they’ve put in place to date.” In fact, since last November 23 Division officers have been called to deal with issues at Woodbine only 68 times, Taverner said – a “fairly low” number of occurrences “in the grand scheme of the area.” Of those 68 calls, only one was for a robbery and six were for assault. The rest, Taverner said, were on fairly minor property-related issues, like thefts from cars and mischief. Meanwhile, self-professed nongambler Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford said he was also “100 per cent” behind Woodbine getting a full casino – for purely ‘practical’ reasons. “I look at this from a practical standpoint: we have billions and billions of dollars in infrastructure that we need to repair: our bridges, our roads, our subways,” he said. “... We have to look at new revenues for the city and one of those revenue sources could be a casino.” Added Crisanti: “This is about supporting a business at risk...it’s about supporting the great charitable work Woodbine does, it’s about preserving jobs, and it’s also about the sustainable revenues to the City of Toronto to the tune of $20 million every year.”
