Ford Nation holds out for comeback Rob, Michael elected; Doug defeated by Tory MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com

CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Creepy clowns will abound this Halloween night at Dyna Wilkins’ Circus of Horrors – a charity haunted house making its Etobicoke debut. From 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31, intrepid trick-or-treaters are invited to shriek and screech their way through Wilkins’ spooky, circus-themed backyard haunt at 14 Mossford Crt. (near Martin Grove Road and Princess Margaret Boulevard). “Prepare to be scared,” warned Wilkins, a former Brampton resident who moved to Etobicoke this summer and brought her annual Halloween haunt – now in its 16th year – with her. “For years, people have been telling me clowns are scary, so this year when people come to the Circus of Horrors, they have to go through a kind of circus-themed maze and I have all these actors – 15 of my friends and family – dressed up as clowns and hiding behind every corner to maximize the fear factor.” Adding to the eerie aura of the haunt, Wilkins added, are a few of her favorite props – from murky fog machines and adrenalin-inducing blow horns, to mindbending fun house mirrors and oozing fake blood, to ominous theme music and spine-tingling air blowers. “It’s all for the thrill of it. Dyna Wilkins and Santana France are ready to spook trick or treaters on Friday at 14 Mossford Crt.

It’s a different political landscape this week in Toronto, one without a Ford at the helm. Despite the election results, some among Ford Nation are already talking about a comeback. On Monday evening, there were moments in the Ford home when matriarch Diane held Doug’s hand. Her youngest son, Rob, had just been re-elected to council in his old north Etobicoke ward. The family and the campaign staff applauded in the basement of her home, and Rob kissed his wife, hugged his children. But not one minute later came the next news: John Tory, not Doug Ford, would be Toronto’s new mayor. Rob, now bald and weakened by his chemotherapy, got up to shake the hand of the older brother who volunteered himself for a late mayoral run after Rob’s cancer diagnosis – and briefly dragged Doug out of his seat. “That’s less than three per cent,” the mayor said to his brother, assessing Tory’s margin of victory. It was meant to be encouraging, but Doug sat frozen on the blond leather couch for several minutes more on Monday night, while Diane, whose late husband Doug Ford Sr. was a politician before either son, gave Doug her maternal comfort. >>>AFTER, page 15

But now the spotlight goes off and you put out your listening ears and you become an active listener,” he told The Guardian in an interview Tuesday, noting that the top four local issues he heard on the doorsteps of the campaign trail and would like to get moving on are: aging infrastructure, specifically sewer lines causing basement flooding; development in the ward; airport noise and night flights; and

A small window of opportunity

M

ayor-elect John Tory must quickly prove he’s a wise choice. More than 60 per cent of eligible Torontonians went to the polls on Monday, and elected Tory by a six-per-cent margin over rival Doug Ford. This signals at least a temporary end to the Ford reign in Toronto, but it wasn’t enough of a victory to suggest Torontonians have denounced any Fordian influence. In fact, 36 of 37 incumbent council members were re-elected, suggesting Torontonians are happy with their representation at a neighbourhood level – there’s just a different expectation of the person seated in the mayor’s chair. Tory must achieve significantly better results working with the same councillors who set a dysfunctional tone of civic government during our view the past four years. Tory has a small window to establish his credibility. Tory must So let’s see him build some quick consensus on SmartTrack or a build quick similar transit plan, and convince consensus various levels of government and potential other funding agencies that the plan will stick and it is the will of Torontonians. Tory must quickly prove he has the ear and the interest of both provincial and federal governments. We’d like to see quick signs from the province and the federal government that Toronto’s future issues are a priority befitting the economic engine of the province and there’s no trepidation dealing with – and believing in – the new administration. Tory has been given the keys to the city. If he can unlock the door and present a bright future, Toronto will reach its potential as a place to live and grow, with smart plans for development catching the eyes of a global marketplace. If he doesn’t, there’s an alternate view in the brothers Ford, who still hold influence in city politics and will be quick to point out any Tory misstep. Forgive us for breaking into a baseball analogy: Two years ago, the Toronto Blue Jays brought some fresh all-star faces to their lineup, building anticipation of great things to come. It took only a limited number of games to realize that team was not going to be a winner, despite all the promise. Toronto can’t afford to fail. We will see what happens next. But we need to see it quickly.

column

Tory has his work cut out for him I

t has been a long wait – a really long wait, for everyone involved. For John Tory, Monday night’s victory in the hardfought 2014 mayoral election must be like a glass of water after a walk in the desert – finally, a win for a politician who has gamely put his name forward for office so many times, and so many times missed out. And for Toronto, it is a different kind of relief. The pillow, finally removed from our collective face, while improbably there is still breath left in our lungs. The Ford years are done, at least for now. The city government can turn away from what was understatedly called the “distraction” of the Ford brothers. We don’t need to spend time attempting to parse the mayor’s barely veiled bigotry, the awful banality of his drug problem, the drama (and melodrama) of his sticker-baron family.

david nickle the city

And the Tory years, whatever they may become, have begun. They will, of course, contain challenges. But those challenges are not so great as that. Tory has made much of a need to unite Toronto council as a primary task. It is unlikely he will have much difficulty in doing so, at least in the short term. Council has over the past year had a crash course in uniting itself, and maintaining a relatively calm demeanour as it goes about the business of government. His bigger challenge, as he alluded to in his speech Monday night, will be in uniting Toronto – or more to the point, keeping united those voters who gave him a chance to govern.

It is a definitive mandate, but not an unequivocal one as many voters who might have supported Olivia Chow’s unabashedly progressive mayoralty moved to Tory’s side for fear of a Doug Ford mayoralty. So it is not likely that the whole of Tory’s support feels, for instance, that SmartTrack and the Scarborough subway are the best way to do transit. As those two things formed the centrepiece of Tory’s campaign it is unlikely he will abandon them, and he shouldn’t: a promise is a promise. But he would do well to embrace elements of Chow’s platform as regards to housing, and perhaps childcare. He hinted in his speech that Chow might yet have a role in the work of the city. It would be good to consider this. Tory will also have to consider the many people

who did not support him, but voted for the Ford brand in spite of everything. That is a sizeable portion of the city that rejected both him and any sense of progressive value. Politically at least, Tory will have need to reach out in that direction. One way he might do so is heed what seems to be a growing coalition of Scarborough councillors, and move to kill the remaining LRT lines on Sheppard and Finch (the one all-too-achievable element of Doug Ford’s transit plan). He’ll certainly feel the pressure to do so, even though he is on record supporting the lines. And that will be the hard thing for Tory: reigning in this new, strong council when it gets an idea in its head.

GlobalMedic fights ebola in west Africa

Donate to Etobicoke-based NGO to help contain deadly disease: TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com

G

lobalMedic continues to ship personal protective equipment and isolation tents to Sierra Leone and Liberia as the World Health Organization warns the ebola outbreak could see 10,000 new cases a week starting in December. Retired Toronto paramedic Herb Buckwalter leveraged his career experience with personal protective equipment when he and Rachel Topping, one of GlobalMedic’s emergency programs officers, left first for Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital and largest city, then for Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, for two weeks in mid-September. Buckwalter and Topping cleared the GlobalMedic shipments of face masks, face shields, splash shields, coveralls, isolation gowns, gloves, garbage bags and isolation tents through each country’s customs and trucked it to hospitals where they met local partners to distribute it throughout both countries. Training of local partners in established protocols for use of the equipment, also known as hazmat suits, was particularly critical to prevent medical personnel from contracting the virus. “Training is so key,” said Matt Capobianco, GlobalMedic’s manager of emergency programs, “Protocols for personal protective equipment won’t work if the programs and training to use it aren’t in place. In that case, the risks (of further virus spread) increase tenfold.” GlobalMedic provides emergency relief to those affected by natural disasters and complex emergencies around the world. The small Canadian non-governmental organization (NGO) of volunteers is a registered charity based in Etobicoke and operates on donations. Dr. Isabelle Nuttall, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) global director, said in a statement last week

more than 9,000 cases of ebola and 4,500 deaths can be confirmed. To date, 427 health-care workers have been infected and 236 have died, she reported. The incubation period from time of infection to symptoms is two to 21 days, the WHO indicated. While GlobalMedic teams have distributed shipments of medical tents, masks and gloves for medical treatment to countries rocked by natural disaster for years, this is its first relief response to a virus outbreak. GlobalMedic quickly concluded, despite the risk, the program had to be delivered, Capobianco said. “We weigh the pros and cons of every mission for team safety,” he said. “We have very strict protocols in place. Our team wasn’t in the thick of hospitals treating patients, they were training people in areas that are hotbeds for this outbreak.” What Buckwalter and Topping found were health-care workers lacking the equipment necessary to protect themselves and, in turn, their families and the broader community. “Life has changed everywhere,” Capobianco said the team related. “Ebola treatment centres are everywhere you go, as are hand sanitizing stations. Culturally, people are physically affectionate. All that stopped. People would greet one another with, ‘Hey, how you doing?’ versus kisses, hugs or handshakes.” Fear gripped residents of both west African nations, the team reported. “People are afraid. The virus is spreading. It’s not contained,” Capobianco said. “People on the ground see no end in sight. It’s scary. People don’t trust the government. They fear treatment for fear they’ll be taken away from their family. “There is a lack of education about what ebola is and how it’s treated.” Ebola is a severe, often fatal, illness. The average ebola case fatality rate is around 50 per cent, the WHO reported. Good outbreak control

Liberian healthcare workers assemble an isolation tent, donated by Etobicoke-based NGO GlobalMedic, at SDA Cooper Hospital in Monrovia, Liberia. GlobalMedic team Herb Buckwalter and Rachel Topping recently spent two weeks in Liberia and Sierra Leone donating personal protective equipment and isolation tents for distribution throughout the west African nations by local partners.

relies on applying a group of interventions, including case management, surveillance and tracing contacts, a good laboratory service, safe burials and mobilizing communities to seek treatment. Human transmission of ebola occurs through direct contact through broken skin or mucous membranes with the blood, secretions or other

bodily fluids of infected people, and with surfaces and materials such as bedding and clothing contaminated with these fluids, the WHO said. Currently, there are no licensed ebola vaccines, but two potential candidates are undergoing evaluation, the WHO indicated. In the past week, WHO reported that the ebola virus outbreak had ended in Senegal and Nigeria. “This is a spectacular success story that shows that Ebola can be contained...” the WHO said in a news release. “Such a story can help the many other developing countries that are deeply worried by the prospect of an imported Ebola case and eager to improve their preparedness plans. Many wealthy countries, with outstanding health systems, may have

something to learn as well.” In 2012, Sierra Leone had a total population of nearly 6,000,000, WHO reported. Life expectancy in the west African country is short – 45 for men; 46 for women. Some 44 per cent of men and 43 per cent of women will die between ages 15 and 60. Liberia had a population of 4.2-million in 2012, with life expectancy at birth ranging from 60 years of age for men and 63 for women. The current ebola outbreak in west Africa, first cases confirmed in March, is the “largest and most complex Ebola outbreak” since the virus was first discovered in 1976, the WHO reported.

Linda Canning hoping to partially offset costs of $40K modifications

E: dramanchopra@gmail.com

Ten-year-old Thomas Bourke is excited to ride his bike and play on the sprawling 11 acres of greenspace when he moves with his mom into their new Burnhamthorpe and Mill roads area condo in late November. But first, the family is seeking some angels. The 1,300-square-foot condo needs extensive modifications to accommodate Thomas, who has cerebral palsy. He requires assistance in all mobility and daily living skills, and has difficulty speaking and processing information. Thomas uses a walker and a wheelchair. “A lot of renovations have to take place to accommodate Thomas’ needs...” said his mom Linda Canning. “It’s exciting. It’s daunting. It will be our home. The goal is that it will accommodate Thomas living here for another 20 years. I’m hoping to only do it once.” Canning estimated the condo’s extensive renos will cost approximately $40,000. The single mom said she is hoping to offset about $15,000 of that through business partnerships — in-kind donations of materials and installation, as well as monetary donations and offers of volunteer labour. The condo’s required renos are extensive. Open concept space is needed for Thomas’ wheelchair and constant supervision. The den will be opened up to allow a dedicated “gross motor” exercise space. The main bathroom and doorway, and Thomas’ bedroom doorway, must be increased for accessibility. The condo’s storage room must be enlarged to accommodate Thomas’ equipment.

Thomas Bourke and his mom Linda Canning share a special moment. The family is moving to condo in November that will require renovations to make it more accomodating for his cerebral palsy.

The home’s carpets are to be replaced with cork to accommodate Thomas’ wheelchair and provide a safe, non-slip, soft, warm surface for Thomas’ walking and crawling exercises. Len McAuley, owner of Pollocks Home Hardware on Roncesvalles Avenue has agreed to donate all the paint to the project. Canning took possession of her condo two weeks ago. She hired contractor Paul McAloon of McAloon Home Improvements, who is contributing the services of a designer. “This is a very different project that I’m very keen to work on and motivated to help with,” McAloon said. “I want to create it right to meet Thomas’ needs and get them right. Working with a designer will help, so I offered at my cost, to help make their home not only functional but comfortable too.” McAloon has helped Canning identify specific needs of the project that could be contributed, including: flooring (and installation), kitchen and bath products, storage organization and doors, as well as service and labour of same. All financial contributions will help offset labour costs. Mom and son rented a large home on Martin Grove Road for the past 12 years. Soon it will be demolished to make way for a rebuild.

Not one to shy away from a challenge, Canning said she sees the move as positive. “I think it will be a nice community for Thomas,” she said, noting the condo has an indoor and outdoor pool. “I’ve always kind of leapt into things with the best of intentions and expectations. “I need a bit of help here. I’ve never done a capital project before. I’ve never fundraised for a capital project before.” But Canning is no stranger to doing all she can to support her son to live life to his fullest capacity. Since age two, Thomas has attended Academy of Conductive Education, a twice-weekly integrated rehabilitation program at Ontario March of Dimes in East York that teaches Thomas functional movement while working on cognitive and speech goals. The education is neuromuscular; engaging Thomas’ muscles in a physical way while also engaging him mentally. It costs $12,000 a year. But community donors come through each year to support Thomas through the Hope for Thomas Fund founded in 2007 by Runnymede United Church. Recently, Thomas and his team ran in the Toronto Waterfront Marathon and raised $9,500 toward his education exceeding their goal. Without conductive education, Thomas would be completely dependent on people for all his functional movements like feeding, stepping and transferring, Canning said. “We’re trying to work on his mobility. I like him to use his walker,” she said. Thomas climbs stairs with assistance, rides his bike, uses a fork and practises getting in and out of the bathtub. “Despite all his limitations, Thomas is a very physical child,” his mom said. “He loves to move, to be upright, to look out the windows. I think condo life will support Thomas. I just think it’s more accommodating to our lifestyle.” Visit www.hopeforthomas. org or call 416-762-6211 to learn more about Thomas, the project and to donate.

Halloween walk raises funds, awareness of military Participants donate to families of fallen soldiers killed last week TOM GODFREY etg@insidetoronto.com About 100 south Etobicoke residents showed up to pay their respects to two fallen Canadian Armed Forces soldiers and raise funds for their grieving families at a Halloween walk. Parents and children in makeup and costumes were greeted by members of the Toronto Scottish Regiment at the Birmingham Street headquarters Saturday, Oct. 25 as part of a Halloween Walk and Fundraiser to help the families of the slain men. Area residents are saddened by the deaths last week of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, 53, in a Quebec hit and run; and Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, 24, who was shot while guarding the National War Memorial in Ottawa. The shooter was shot by sergeant-at-arms Kevin Vickers in Parliament’s Hall of Honor. Cirillo, a member of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Regiment, received a full military funeral on Tuesday in Hamilton. “Our hearts go out for the grieving families,” said event organizer

Chris Korwin-Kuczynski, vice-chair of the Lakeshore Village Business Improvement Area (BIA). “Our community fully supports the troops and we hope this will become an annual event.” The walk was co-sponsored by the BIA and Scottish Regiment, whose officials presented trophies to the children for the best costumes and jack-o’-lanterns. There were lots of food and games that took place in a large gymnasium lined with pumpkins. Korwin-Kuczynski hopes this event will raise about $500 to help the grief-stricken families. More community fundraisers are planned. “These soldiers paid the ultimate sacrifice,” he said. “This is the community’s way of saying thanks to the soldiers for the work they do.” Regiment Operation Warrant Officer Randy Cleary said he was pleased by the support from the community for the event, that was planned a month ago to raise awareness of the historic fighting unit. “Today is a joyous day for us to celebrate the community,” Cleary said. “We are celebrating the fan-

tastic community we live in.” Longtime community resident Dianna Gumienik, who was dressed as Queen Elizabeth, brought her family to help out and show support for the troops. “We are here because we firmly stand behind our troops,” Gumienik said. “They have a dangerous job to do and I wanted to get my grandkids involved.” She is still haunted by the death

of Cirillo, who she said never had a chance to defend himself. “I was totally devastated,” Gumienik said. “Both of these brave men should still be alive today.” Her daughter-in-law Anna, said her daughters, Kaya, 8, and Victoria, 4, had a great time at the party while learning about Canada’s military. “We fully respect our soldiers and this is a great way to raise funds,” Anna said. “We support our troops

because they put their lives on the line for us every day.” Kayah, who was dressed as a black widow spider, said she learned about being a soldier. “It was fun and we get to learn some stuff about the army,” she said. “It was great.” Police said the men who killed the soldiers were Canadian citizens who had become radicalized and had desires to fight abroad.

‘After Rob is done, I don’t have a mayor anymore’ says supporter >>>from page 1 “Do you want to head over to the hall?” he asked finally. At the Woodbine Banquet Hall, Doug’s speech was brief. He said they are leaving the city in much better shape than they found it in four years ago and leaving behind a legacy of subways in Scarborough and knowing the city will never face another garbage strike. “Win or lose, I always said we would run a campaign that would make us proud,” he said. “Together we have changed the political landscape in Toronto. “I will go to sleep tonight knowing I gave absolutely everything.” Nephew Michael Ford, who had run for council until Rob replaced him last month, didn’t rate a specific mention, despite winning a school trustee seat, a sort of consolation prize, at the age of 20. Ford Nation, a suburban taxpayer movement that built itself into a formidable force behind the brothers, faced a

future in which one of their champions was shut out of city hall and with the other, now ailing, in a minor role. So m e c h a n t e d f o r a recount, and others gamely predicted a Ford – it wasn’t clear which one –- would win the next battle for the city four years from now. Klaudia Dynowska, a volunteer driver for the Ford campaign who said she voted for the first time, signed herself up for the rematch. “After Rob is done, I don’t have a mayor anymore,” added the central Etobicoke resident. “Mister Tory, he’s for the rich.” Ford Nation will be coming back a lot stronger, said Chris Glenny, a Scarborough man who said his area had been ignored by the previous mayors of an amalgamated Toronto. Only the Ford brothers, he said, ventured out to Scarborough to find out what people there wanted. Glenny, as did some others, argued Tory won because Doug had been forced to

jump late into the mayoral race. Rob, had he been able to keep campaigning, would “be mayor tonight,” he said. One woman said supernatural explanations should be blamed for Doug’s defeat. “They work very hard, the

forces of evil,” she said. Kuljgeet Singh, another Etobicoke man in a Ford Nation shirt, offered a wrestling fan’s perspective. “Ford’s the people’s champ – he needs a belt,” he shouted, gesturing at where that cham-

pionship trophy would be worn. “And if his mom decides to run in the future, she needs a belt.” What politician would give you his cell number, as Rob Ford did, and tell you to

call at any time, Singh asked, describing Tory as being “like a robot.” A few young men holding Ford placards were former football players Rob Ford once coached at Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School, such as Jasir Ashfaque, who described the mayor as “the realist, the finest and the kindest of heart.” Support for the Fords will never die, said Ashfaque, though, he added, “some Torontonians made the biggest mistake of their lives tonight.” It was the Ford brothers and Drake, the hip hop artist who put Toronto on the world map, he said. “It feels like someone took part of my city away from me, and I’m left homeless.” Comparing Doug Ford with Tory, Mark Varadarajan conceded both are men of business, but said Ford “has connections in the real world.”

DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com John Tory spent his first day as Toronto’s mayor-elect gathering a stack of binders explaining his new roles – and talking with reporters as storm-clouds rolled over Nathan Phillips Square. “It’s when you sit down with the city manager and many others, you get seized of the responsibility you have,” said Tory as he began a lengthy question-and-answer session with reporters the morning after voters asked him to be the successor to Mayor Rob Ford. “You know I feel a strong sense of public service that goes with being in this job. As you see the roster of issues out there, you understand its importance.” Tory won’t take office for more than a month, but after taking a couple of days off, he will get down to the business of setting up his office, choos-

Tory preps for new job ing his executive committee and ordering the agenda for the coming months. He also announced his Transition Team leader, former city councillor Case Ootes, who will be assembling other advisors and helping Tory hit the ground running when he’s sworn in Dec. 1. Ootes will be releasing a work plan for the Transition Team – which will be working out of temporary offices in city hall – this week. Tory insisted he had not spoken to any councillors as to their role in the new council. But Tory said he hopes his opponents in the election – Karen Stintz, Olivia Chow, David Soknacki, Ari Goldkind and Doug Ford – will be able to take some role in fulfilling his agenda. And he said he hopes to be able to bring the city together throughout his mandate. “I think the one thing that I know more so than anything

else is going to bring the city together is results,” he said. “If people see transit being built... jobs... their finances organized...they are going to have more confidence in one Toronto.” It was less than 24 hours earlier that Tory won the mayoralty with more than 40 per cent of the vote. He was trailed by city councillor Doug Ford and former MP Olivia Chow, the one-time front-runner who finished a distant third. The evening seemed a closer race than many expected at times, as Tory and Ford seemed locked in a race with as little as 12,000 votes between them at one point and around 20,000 at various times. When he emerged victorious he said, “Torontononians want to see an end to the division that has paralyzed city hall in the last few years... Toronto, I hear you. I hear you loud and clear.”

WARD 4: Communication the top priority for John Campbell TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Communication with residents will mark John Campbell’s tenure as Ward 4’s new councillor. “I want to establish regular communication with residents,” Campbell said just outside his victory party that rocked The Longest Yard pub Monday night. He cited Councillor Josh Matlow’s communication as one to emulate. “I want residents to know what’s going on at city hall. Now 19,000 households have my mobile phone (number). I want to keep it that way.” Both Campbell’s election website and campaign litera-

ture published his cell phone number, considered unconventional by most standards but that of former mayor, now Ward 2 Councillor Rob Ford, renowned for his access to the public. Normally, candidates publish a campaign office phone number. Campbell, 56, a father of two grown daughters who is self-employed, said he plans to publish a “fact-based, issues-based” newsletter to be mailed to residents, “not self-promotion to get me reelected,” as well as weekly email updates on issues. priority, he said. “Here’s to John. We’re here because he is one hell of a fine candidate and an extraordinary man,” recently retired

and highly regarded former Etobicoke Centre Liberal MPP and cabinet minister Donna Cansfield said as Campbell’s supporters broke into loud

applause. Campbell’s win was years in the making. The former Toronto District School Board chair first ran in Ward 4 in 2010, narrowly defeated by 309 votes by veteran councillor Gloria Lindsay Luby, who had represented the area since Toronto’s amalgamation. Campbell hit the hustings early in 2014, but faced some competition late in the race when Lindsay Luby announced her surprise retirement and gave her endorsement to Niels Christensen, 59, a local realtor and former police officer. On Tuesday, the city’s website reported Campbell won 34 per cent of the vote,

Christensen 29 per cent and construction firm owner Angelo Carnevale, 21 per cent. Toronto District School Board incumbent Chris Glover was easily re-elected with 43 per cent of the vote. Toronto Catholic District School Board incumbent Joseph Martino also handily held onto his seat with 42 per cent support. Jean-Francoise L’Heureux of Conseil scolaire Viamonde, k n ow n a s t h e Fre n c h language Public District School Board, was acclaimed trustee.

Actors will moderate the fright level >>>from page 1 come through the haunt who’ve been really scared, but come August they’re back at my door saying ‘I can’t wait for it to come back, it’s so exciting!’” Wilkins laughed, noting that she and her Circus of Horrors clowns will “tone down” their act, depending on the age of their visitors. “We allow everyone to come in, but we moderate it depending on the child,” she added. “It’s not to the point, like at some haunts across the States, where you’re bawling your eyes out and you’re petrified. It’s not to that level here. It’s really with the intention of, ‘yeah, be prepared to be scared’, but you’re not going to have nightmares for the next six years.” In addition to this year marking the haunt’s debut in Etobicoke, the Circus of Horrors will also mark the first time one of Wilkins’ haunts will benefit a charity – the Canadian Diabetes Association, for which Wilkins hopes to raise $1,000. “This is the first year I’m

taking donations, but they’re not mandatory. The haunt is free, but if people can donate, I’m happy to take a nickel to anything over $15, which will get a tax receipt,” she said, adding that she chose the Diabetes Association as her charity beneficiary because it’s one that hits close to home.

“My dad, my sister and my boyfriend, who’s insulin dependent, all have diabetes. It runs in my family, so I know what it’s all about and I see it first-hand.” The event takes place rain or shine. For more information about Wilkins’ Circus of Horrors, go to www.facebook.com/ halloweentoo

At a time when most kids spend their days daydreaming about the sweet spoils of trick-or-treating, this Halloween the students on the Social Justice Team at Christ the King Catholic School are more focused on canned corn than candy corn – and it’s all thanks to the We Scare Hunger food drive. Lining the hall at the south Etobicoke elementary school’s entrance this week is proof of just how successful the club’s grades 7 and 8 students have been so far in rallying their classmates to support the Free the Children-endorsed Halloween initiative – six overflowing grocery carts filled with cereal, pasta, canned fruits and veggies, and other non-perishable food items. “I feel really proud that our school was able to do this. We were so dedicated to it, that we had to go get even more carts to hold all the food,” 13-year-old Sebastian Olarte, one of only two boys on the 26-member Social Justice

Team at Christ the King, said at the school Thursday, Oct. 23. “I feel it is important to give back because some people are a little less fortunate than other people. It’s not that much just to buy a can of corn yourself, but as an entire school, we can collect many, many cans and that can make a big difference in the lives of the less fortunate.” St. Vincent de Paul All food collected during Christ the King’s We Scare Hunger food drive, which runs until the end of the month, will be donated to the St. Vincent de Paul food bank, added Giselle Valencia, 13, who’s now in her second year on the Social Justice Team. “It’s really fun. We do a lot of activities around the school and we try to go outside the school to help our community, too, which is really great,” she added, noting the team has also participated in Free the Children’s annual We Day at the Air Canada Centre for the last three years – an experience she called “very inspir-

ing and motivational.” To help give the We Scare Hunger campaign a final push, Giselle said the Social Justice Team is also set to host a special Halloween haunted house tomorrow – the last day of the food drive – and all students who wish to enter must first donate a food item. “We just want to try our best to help out the community and it’s going really well so far,” she said. Gissel Gonzalez – one of three teacher organizers for the Social Justice Team at the school, along with Maureen Deeney and Jordana Spensieri – said credit for the success of this year’s We Scare Hunger drive goes to her dedicated students. “The one thing to point out about this group is they have a lot of initiative, they have a lot of energy and motivation and a lot of ideas. They’re really taking ownership of it,” she said, noting this year’s Social Justice Team is the biggest in the club’s seven-year history.

Give your bathroom a fall facelift The allure of a spa-style bathroom is something few homeowners can resist. Such bathrooms can make for a welcome retreat after a long day at the office or an afternoon spent chasing kids around the yard. But as appealing as such a sanctuary may seem, the cost of creating a luxury washroom is more than many homeowners’ budgets can withstand. Fortunately, a dream bathroom does not have to break the bank. In fact, there are several ways to make a bathroom worthy of the most comforting spa without stretching your budget. • Install a wall-hung mirror. If your idea of a luxury bathroom harkens back to a time before the advent of recessed medicine cabinets, then a wall-hung mirror can give the bathroom an entirely new feel without much of a financial commitment. Flush-mount mirrors need not require the services of a contractor, but they can provide a sense of elegance that recessed cabinets cannot.

• Replace bathroom countertops. A countertop replacement job may sound expensive, but such an undertaking is not very costly in the washroom, where counter space is typically limited. Since the cost of countertop materials is by the square foot, you can replace bathroom surfaces for a relatively small amount of money. Granite countertops can be beautiful, but such surfaces do not create the warm feel that many prefer in a luxury bathroom. A material such as soapstone is warm and inexpensive and can quickly give the bathroom a new look. • Embrace calm colors. Painting the bathroom is another inexpensive way to give the room an entirely new look. If the walls of your washroom are currently a vibrant color, consider a more calming tone to give the room the luxurious and relaxing feel you’re aiming for. If your bathroom includes a claw foot tub, you also can make it a two-tone

tub to add a touch of relaxing elegance. Paint the tub’s exterior in a calming tone such as soft gray, and you will have transformed the washroom at little cost and even less effort. •Transform your double vanity. Many homeowners prefer a double vanity in their bathrooms, as such a setup allows both men and women the space to get ready for bed or work without getting in one another’s way. But instead of a traditional vanity with a counter between the sinks, consider installing matching pedestal sinks to surround an antique washstand. This can give the washroom a feel of antique luxury, and such washstands can found for a few hundred dollars. •Replace old fixtures. Though they are often overlooked, cabinet and door fixtures as well as towel racks can greatly influence the feel of a washroom. If the cabinet and drawer handles are old or outdated, replace them with more

modern options. Such a job might be even more effective if you repaint or reface existing cabinetry. Neither task is terribly expensive, but both can give the washroom a more luxurious feel. The same goes for replacing old towel racks, which can be an eyesore if they’re espe-

cially dated. • Transforming a bathroom may seem like a significant and costly undertaking, but savvy homeowners can give their washrooms a new and luxurious look without spending much money.

Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the

If you’re looking for a scare this Halloween, there’s plenty of places in the city to get it MARK A. CADIZ mcadiz@insidetoronto.com

Several apparitions have been spotted over the years: the ‘White Lady’ described to have long hair and a flowing robe wails on the third floor...

I

n the city’s 180-year history, Torontonians have encountered a myriad of unexplained phenomena. From the urban tales of Fort York to the Ghost of Glendon College, Toronto has amassed its fair share of paranormal activity. And with Halloween on Friday, The Guardian has decided to share Seven Eerie Sites and Ghostly Accounts with its readers: 1) Queen’s Park Legislative Assembly of Ontario Known for its Richardsonian Romanesque style and light reddish facade, Ontario’s Legislative building, situated in central Toronto, is said to be a known site of unexplained phenomena. Before the building was built in 1886, a female asylum nicknamed the ‘University Lunatic Asylum’, due to its neighbourly distance to U of T, stood in its place. Several apparitions have been spotted over the years: the ‘White Lady’, described to have long hair and a flowing robe wails on the third floor; the ‘Maiden’ the second spirit apparently holds her apron over her face; and the third, described as the most terrifying, has been sighted in the tunnels running beneath the building. Several people reported seeing a woman hanging from a hook. 2) Fort York Fort York, one of the first British settlements in Toronto, was a deadly site during the War of 1812. Many invading Americans were killed by a massive explosion ignited by the fleeing British. It is said a mass grave was built for the dead, but no traces of it have been found. With such a long history, it’s no surprise that Fork York is one of the most haunted sites in the city, according to the sheer number of reports from visitors and staff. Numerous accounts have been reported about seeing a redcoated guard by the barracks and front entrance. Another popular story recounted by a staff member involves the Officer’s Quarters. One night while closing up, the staff member observed a light coming from the quarters. As he made his way toward the building, he said he could see figures gathered around a dining table. Strangely, the closer he

visited Montgomery’s Inn is said to have suddenly fainted in the same spot.

got to the building, the fainter the apparitions became, and once there, any trace of what he thought was a dinner gathering was gone. 3) Colborne Lodge in High Park Built in 1837, Colborne Lodge, situated in High Park, was home to John and Jemima Howard. Jemima died of cancer in 1877. In the early stages of her illness, Howard became extremely concerned about his wife’s behaviour and wanted to have her admitted to an asylum, but his request was denied. Eventually he decided to confine her to her room, concerned for her safety. It is said she spent most of her days looking

out the window and still does to this day. 4) Old Finch Road Scarborough Old Finch Road in Scarborough is said to be a site of several haunted tales but the most notorious of them all is about a young lady who was murdered near the site and her body left in the Rouge River in the early 1980s. Ever since then the area is said to be haunted. The case still remains unsolved. 5) Montgomery’s Inn Etobicoke Situated in Etobicoke, Montgomery’s Inn was built in 1830 by husband and wife Thomas and Margaret

Montgomery. They ran the inn successfully for 25 years until Margaret’s death in the mid-1850s. Since then, it has been converted to a community museum where there have been a number of unexplained occurrences reported. One tale circulating refers to a school trip involving a young girl. During the tour her teacher realized she was missing and went to fetch her. Apparently the young girl said she couldn’t move, saying it was like someone was holding her dress. Eventually she managed to rejoin her classmates. Even stranger, years after the school trip, another member of the same family who

(John Howard) decided to confine (Jemima) to her room, concerned for her safety. It is said she spent most of her days looking out the window and still does to this day. - The story of Colborne Lodge in High Park, and Jemima Howard (photo seen at left) who suffered the effects of cancer and was restricted to her room. 6) Ghost of Glendon College North York Most York University students are familiar with the legend of the Ghost of Glendon College. Prior to its university status, Glendon was a residence for the Edward R. Wood family. The Wood family estate was entrusted to York University and, since then, many students living on the campus have reported apparitions of a lady wearing white wandering the garden. It is also said this same mysterious woman has appeared in photographs taken in the garden. Students speculate that maybe a woman from the Wood family has taken refuge on the grounds, most likely Wood’s wife Euphemia, who died in 1950. 7) The Old Don Jail Riverdale The controversial old Don Jail, in the Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street area, was completed in 1864 and was a site known for its 34 hangings. The Don Jail served as the holding point for both men and women prisoners and was the last site where executions took place in Canada after capital punishment was abolished. Over the years there have been tales of spirits occupying the premises. One tale circulating is about “The Lady of the Don”, a former inmate from the 1890s who hung herself with bed sheets. Several guards have reported seeing an angry ghostly figure with blond hair wandering the main rotunda area. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE HAUNT? Tell us where you go in the city to get into the Halloween spirit. Send an email to letters@insidetoronto.com

Honouring Tradition

colourful display of thanksgiving STARTING ANEW: (From right, clockwise) Kokila Sachdev greets visitors at the entrance of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir on Claireville Drive last Friday, for Salmubarak (New Year) celebrations following Diwali celebrations - or Festival of Lights - the day before; Devakee Patel and Mansi Dave work on decorative sweets and food prepared in celebration of the Hindu new year at the Mandir; Krunal Kanani participates in the traditional candle lighting while tabla player Harsh Madhee with Sagrar Patel on the harmonium play music for the occasion. The colourful display of lights, sounds and tastes also included ‘Annakut’ - a display of hundreds of vegetarian dishes which are artistically and elegantly arranged in front of God as an offering of thanksgiving. Diwali symbolizes the victory of good over evil and is a time to renew friendships, unity and harmony in the family and community. Photos/PETER C. MCCUSKER
