Program aims to deliver 145,000 baby boxes to parents Program features education, supplies LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com As an 11-week-old baby boy lay smiling and gurgling in a new “Baby Box” fitted with a firm mattress and 100 per cent cotton sheet – mimicking that of a bassinet – firsttime expectant mother Manal Sidiqqui sang the praises of the Baby Box Co. initiative at an Ontario launch event Monday. The downtown Toronto resident, whose son is expected any day now, said she and her husband try to reduce their ecological footprint on a daily basis. “It’s important to us to provide a more sustainable upbringing for our child,” Sidiqqui said at the Four Villages Community Health Centre where she joined new and expectant mothers and fathers, who picked up their Baby Boxes and had the opportunity to meet Baby Box Co. representatives respon-

sible for bringing the program to Ontario. The program is free, Sidiqqui pointed out, but it does feature an educational component. In order to receive a box, parents are required to complete ‘Baby Box University,’ which is comprised of a series of videos on such topics as lactation, post-partum depression, and sleep habits, among others. The videos were created in collaboration with medical professionals, maternal health advocates and child development specialists to reduce infant mortality while empowering parents. “I think it’s really great,” Sidiqqui said. Once parents have completed the course, they will receive a graduation certificate making them eligible to receive a Baby Box. To receive the box, they must submit their certificate, Baby Box Co. founder and CEO Jennifer Clay said.

Clay was inspired by a Finnish tradition. For 75 years, its government has

been providing new parents with a safe sleeping environment for infants, which

also serves as a starter kit for expectant mothers because it comes with such items as

clothes, sheets, and toys. Dating back to the 1930s, the program is designed to provide all children regardless of their socioeconomic status an equal start in life. A self-described research fanatic and creator of socially responsible businesses, Clay said she visited Finland to gain first-hand knowledge of the “beautiful tradition.” Monday’s event at the Dundas West and Jane streets-area community hub was just the beginning of the Baby Box Co. program. As many as 145,000 baby boxes will be distributed annually through hospitals, community agencies and health centres across the province. Each box, compliant with Health Canada’s bassinet standard, is filled with baby essentials, all donated, and determined by community and physician input, Clay said. Volleyball team warms up for Rio Paralympics at West Park LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Shacarra Orr, who wears no. 4 for the Canadian indoor women’s sitting volleyball team, will celebrate her 20th birthday in Rio when she and her teammates take to the court for their Paralympic debut during the first week of the games. Ever since a car accident left her with only partial movement of her right arm, Orr knew there was a target she was destined to reach. “It was that light at the end of the tunnel, the goal that I was striving for even though I didn’t know exactly what it was. Everything I’ve done in the last five years is for this,” Orr said. “I’m so lucky to be able to experience this. I’m so excited.” The fact that she gets to mark a significant milestone while at the Paralympic Games is just icing on the (birthday) cake. Park Healthcare Centre, the Jane Street and Weston Roadarea rehabilitation centre Monday, just days before their departure to Brazil. During their visit, the women demonstrated the sport of sitting volleyball, which several of the

players weren’t even aware of before they got involved in the game. A standing volleyball player since she was in Grade 4, Orr taught herself to play with her left hand. “During a game, the coach

of another team saw I was playing differently and asked if I wanted to try (sitting volleyball),” Orr said. “I joined the (national women’s) team a year-and-a-half after the accident.” A driver who had just

finished his first night shift fell asleep at the wheel and crossed over into oncoming traffic hitting the car Orr was travelling in on the way to a volleyball tournament. When doctors told her she might lose her arm, Orr said she decided she would make the best of it. Although she is missing a bone in her elbow and experiences numbness in her hand and fingers, her medical team was able to save her arm. Meghan Waffle, whose leg was amputated as a result of a car accident in late September last year, said she was inspired to see the team play. After spending five weeks in hospital – three of them in a coma – Waffle became a resident at West Park for seven weeks and is now an outpatient. “They’ve really done everything for us – myself, and my family. We didn’t know what it would take to get my life back,” she said. While she misses her old life, Waffle said each day is

better than the last. Janet Campbell, a physiotherapist at West Park who works with amputees, said the opportunity to watch the sitting volleyball team play is “fantastic,” particularly for those who are in the early stages of their recovery. “Life might not look the same as it once did, but (losing a limb) could open up new opportunities,” Campbell said. In fact, four West Park amputation rehabilitation patients have gone on to compete for the Canadian Men’s Sitting Volleyball Team, which earned two Parapan Am bronze medals in 2011 and 2015. The women’s team qualified for Rio with a bronze medal at the Parapan Am Games last year. West Park Healthcare follows acute care. It provides specialized rehabilitative care for patients recovering from life-altering accidents and health challenges such as amputation.

oday marks the start of a new month and the unofficial end of summer. And what a summer it was. Heat and humidty and long, sunny days. Patios packed with patrons, and pedestrians taking in the sights across our city and beyond. The exceptional weather was an uncommon trend for Toronto, but one that was welcomed (mostly) throughout the last few months. Plans are no doubt being made for the Labour Day long weekend. The weather appears it will cooperate, with sun and warmth showering most of the Greater Toronto Area. The season’s change is no time be sad, though. Instead, relish in the warm OuR ViEW weather expected. Relish in one last great weekend New seasons with friends and family. Relish in the chance for one final road trip bring new before school starts. There’s certainly no shortage of experiences things to do in Toronto. The CNE is on until Labour Day and you can take in the 67th annual Canadian International Air Show as it soars over Lake Ontario. The annual Labour Day Parade in Toronto takes place Monday on University Avenue. GREAT LIVING

If your weekend doesn’t include any social gatherings or last-minute excursions, just take the time to celebrate living in a great city like Toronto. And just because summer’s ending, the fun doesn’t stop – it carries on throughout the year. From walks to enjoy the fall colours, visits to the apple orchard to select the best fruit for some seasonal canning or baking, to skiing and skating, there’s lots to look forward to in the coming months. For instance, the Toronto International Film Festival brings stars and movie fans from around the world to our city this month. There’s also Nuit Blanche in October, the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in November and the 112th annual Toronto Santa Claus Parade also in November. Then it will be a new year and not long after the season will change once again from fall to winter. The goal is to change along with the seasons, finding beauty in everything that is around us, but most importantly in ourselves.

Scarborough-Rouge River misstep reveals PC party sex-ed rift Voters in Scarborough-Rouge River will be casting ballots today in the byelection to replace Liberal MPP Bas Balkisoon – and here’s hoping that by now most of them are clear on at least one key point: Progressive Conservative leader Patrick Brown is not planning on scrapping the controversial sexeducation plan introduced by Kathleen Wynne. Early voters – about 4,500 of them who voted in advance polls from Aug. 20 to 26 – can be excused for a bit of confusion. On the weekend, a letter went out from PC candidate Raymond Cho’s campaign, claiming Brown had a very different plan: that the PCs would, if they prevailed in the 2018 provincial election, scrap the whole thing. On Monday, Brown was forced to clarify, and he did, in an essay published in the Toronto Star. “It was a mistake for a letter to go out to Scarborough-Rouge River voters saying I would

david nickle the city “scrap” the updated curriculum. This is not my view. This is not what I will do.” What he would do, wrote Brown, is consult on future additions to the curriculum. The local campaign parsed those words, somehow, to mean that he would also get rid of what was there. It’s a pretty big shift on the part of the ground campaign. Brown was, after all, on record firmly as supporting Wynne’s sex-education plan, in spite of protests from some parents who are fearful of its frank inclusion of subjects such as LGBTQ and trans-gender issues, masturbation, consent and contraception. Such a shift might, indeed, convince some of those parents living in the riding to vote for

Progressive Conservative candidate Raymond Cho. Of course, Brown has made it clear that he doesn’t want votes on that basis. Based on his own leadership, it would be duplicitous, and it’s to his credit that he’s unwilling to win an election that way. What this summer byelection misstep does show is what could remain an existential rift in the Progressive Conservative party heading into the main game in 2018: the gap between a socially conservative wing of the party, and the fiscally conservative, socially centrist wing that dominated during Bill Davis’ Blue Machine era last century and still held sway to a degree during the more tumultuous Mike Harris years in the late 1990s and early aught. Ontario’s PCs have been in the middle of a tug of war since that time. John Tory tried and failed to achieve a mandate, pulling the party back to the

centre. Tim Hudak likewise failed to bring the party back to power by pulling much farther to the right. Whatever the outcome of today’s byelection in Scarborough-Rouge River, Brown will have to decide how he will lead through the main game in 2018. The Cho campaign in Scarborough-Rouge River (managed, it should be noted, by former city councillor and mayoral candidate Doug Ford) has made it clear that there may be an appetite, on the ground in Scarborough at least, for a hard-right, socially conservative pendulum swing. And even if there’s not that much appetite on the ground…clearly, there is, as there ever has been, a powerful hunger within the party itself. On that, there should be no confusion.

For Aimee Duncalfe, Tuesday’s announcement that the federal government has increased Canada Student Grant amounts by 50 per cent means she’ll be that much quicker in attaining her ultimate life goals. The second-year Humber College nursing student dreams of one day opening a home for pregnant teens in Kampala, Uganda, but won’t be able to embark on that mission until finishing her education, and then paying down her hefty student loans. “Financing my education is a challenge that I, like many other students, am faced with,” Duncalfe said during the funding announcement at Humber’s North Campus, where she works part-time to help pay her tuition. “Receiving the Canada Student Grant has definitely eased some of the stress that comes along with having to pay for my classes. This grant is also meaningful, because I will not have to spend as much time here in Canada paying off my student debt before returning to Uganda to start making a difference.” Duncalfe is just one of more than 350,000 students from across Canada expected to benefit from the 50 per cent increase to the Canada Student Grant program, which was implemented just in time for the 2016-2017 school year, said Minister of Science and Etobicoke North MP Kirsty Duncan. “Our government understands many young Canadians struggle with the rising costs

of tuition, and we believe that needs to change. Our government believes students at colleges, polytechnics and universities deserve more support,” Duncan said at the announcement. “This is the first increase to the Canada Student Grant program since 2009, and now that it is returned, not only will it provide our students with more money, it will help to decrease student debt, as these grants do not need to be paid back.” Depending on income, grants for each student could reach as high as $3,000 each year – representing a $1.5 billion investment in student support over five years, Duncan added. The 50 per cent increase will raise Canada Student Grant monies from $2,000 to $3,000 per year for full-time students from low-income families; from $800 to $1,200 per year for students from middle-income families; and from $1,200 to $1,800 for part-time students from lowincome families.

Beginning on Nov. 1, the federal government will also ease the rules on its Repayment Assistance Plan by ensuring that no single borrower will be required to make any repayment until he or she is earning at least $25,000 a year, Duncan also announced. Humber College president Chris Whitaker called the double announcement “tremendous news” for the Humber community, which he said boasts a student body from all different walks of life. “It is difficult to learn when you’re facing financial challenges – we all know that,” Whitaker lamented, noting that more than 9,000 Humber College students received Canada Student Grants during the 2014-2015 school year alone. “Our students have significant challenges financially, so this is going to go a long way to supporting our students, and to support them even considering coming to Humber and attending post-secondary in the first place.”

combination with the applied, hands-on experience they need to enrich our economy, our communities and our daily lives,” said Matthews, who also serves as the newly appointed Ontario Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development. “It’s about supporting hands-on, career-focused learning that will help students make the city, the country and the world a better place, a healthier place, a more sustainable place.” Humber College president Chris Whitaker said

the college itself will also be contributing an additional $39.57 million to the pair of projects, for a total investment of $64.55 million. “Investing in innovative research and facilities, and in spaces to showcase our innovative technology programs, is something we continue to need to do,” he said. “As we grow, as we engage more employers, as we’re producing the next generation of skilled talent for our economy, we need to continue to provide those spaces – and this is going to get us there.”

Comparing two controversial campaigns DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com A businessman whose success stems from inherited wealth, whose opinion tends toward the blunt and controversial, and whose celebrity makes a populist-fuelled run for high office a real possibility. Remind you of anyone? If you said real estate mogul and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, congratulations: you’re alive on this planet in 2016. If you said the late former Toronto mayor and councillor Rob Ford… well, congratulations too. You were around for at least some of the controversial mayor’s term of office, and may even remember his juggernaut campaign to win the mayoralty in 2010. And looking at both campaigns, six years apart, you might think these two campaigns are hitting many of the same marks – that Rob Ford’s 2010 decisive win against well-funded Liberal George Smitherman might provide instruction to Trump’s attempt to best wellfunded Democrat Hillary Clinton. You might think that in August 2016. But really? Nick Kouvalis, the Conservative pollster who took over Ford’s own faltering campaign in July of 2010, says it’s more complex. There are some similarities – but there are key differences between Ford and Trump that could turn out to be deal-breakers, in almost every area. Here are five of them:

The Base: Kouvalis concedes that Ford’s base – the group of mostly suburban voters who eventually became known as Ford Nation – and the base of supporters attending Trump’s rallies come from the same source: “People who are just really pissed off. That’s sort of the same, people who can’t get ahead as hard as they work.” One difference, though, is that Ford’s base was multi-ethnic; Trump so far has extended his appeal to mostly white voters, aided by consistently racist rhetoric. And that, said Kouvalis, is a mistake.

The Gaffes: Both campaigns have dealt with missteps and scandals, but Kouvalis says that

Trump is in a worse position because most of his problems arise from missteps on the campaign trail – insulting the Khan family, suggesting a judge with Mexican heritage was unqualified to rule on his case are two examples. Ford’s problems – a drunk driving case from many years past in Florida, or a tape in which he appeared to discuss helping a supporter buy street-level OxyContin – were in the past. “People don’t care about things in the past. They do kind of care about things that are said in the moment.”

The Ground Game: On this, there is no comparison. Led by Kouvalis, Ford’s campaign team pushed hard to build a database based on Ford’s own records of phone calls he’d returned and, later, based on robocalls. By election day, the campaign knew who their supporters were, where they lived, and how likely they were to come out and vote. Trump, says Kouvalis, “has got nothing. We’re talking about a national race. I just

don’t know how you can have nothing. Hillary Clinton has 700 paid staff in a building.”

The Competition: Here, Kouvalis says, there are similarities. While Trump is behind in nearly every poll, in former First Lady, Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton he is facing an opponent who is well funded but historically unpopular among voters. Ford was in similar circumstances, vis-àvis former Liberal Cabinet Minister George Smitherman. Kouvalis maintains that unpopularity pushed Ford’s support to 47 per cent – higher than anyone had expected. And he said that Clinton’s unpopularity could in the end be the one thing that might help Trump recover. “He’s still got three months,” says Kouvalis. “He doesn’t have to bring it back that much – he’s behind five points nationally and that’s nothing.” What would Kouvalis advise Trump to do? What Ford did in 2010: stay on message, listen to his advisors and never, ever ad-lib. Do that, says Kouvalis, and the Republican campaigns downstream will start doing the groundwork that Trump’s campaign hasn’t yet begun. And ultimately? Take the lesson from Ford. “Ford and Trump are different because Ford knew why he wanted to be the mayor and Ford was also willing to learn. He was humble and Trump isn’t. Trump knows what he knows and doesn’t want to ever admit that he doesn’t know something,” said Kouvalis. * In the days following this interview (conducted over Aug. 22-23), Trump may have shown signs of following this advice, softening his position on immigration and attempting at least nominally to reach out to African American voters, and his standings in polls has improved. But as the late Rob Ford was wont to say – the only poll that counts is the one on election day. And that is still more than two months off.

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. Born with 13q deletion syndrome – a chromosomal disorder that not only causes intellectual disability and congenital malformations, but also an increased risk of retinoblastoma – eight-year-old Ruby was just the second child in Canada to receive the “miracle” drug that ended up saving her left eye from malignant tumours she developed as a baby. “It was through wonderful research and everything that her doctors at SickKids ended up trying a drug that’s typically used for ovarian cancer to treat her eye,” Ruby’s mom, Suzanne, said of her then-fourmonth-old daughter’s successful treatment with the drug Topotecan. “Ruby was one of the first fantastic outcomes where this drug worked. It was a miracle.” It was that miraculous expe-

Last year’s inaugural event drew 4,523 participants, who raised a staggering $7.5 million to support the clinical enhancements, survivorship programs, and research of Dr. Tak Mak and his teams at

Princess Margaret. To contribute to their year’s fundraising tally, Suzanne and her fellow Etobicoke Walking Warriors teammates have already been hard at work preparing for their big walk on Sept. 10 – hosting barbecue, silent auction, garage sale and bake sale fundraisers, as well as going out on weekly training walks together as a team. With the “amazing” support of family, friends and neighbours, the Etobicoke Walking Warriors have so far raised $6,288 towards their fundraising goal of $11,000. But what she’s most looking forward to the day of the walk, Suzanne said, is seeing husband Joe, 13-year-old son Jack, and, of course, Ruby, cheering her on when she crosses the finish line at Nathan Phillips Square. Tips for speedy teen room makeovers It must feel like your teen’s style changes every few weeks. Just like their interest in bands, clothes, sports or makeup, their taste in room decor can change from one day to the next. So when you’re faced with requests to redecorate and reorganize their space it’s best to find a style they truly love so you’re not breaking the bank and making constant changes. A full bedroom redesign can be costly, but a few simple tweaks can make a big difference. With these four easy tips your teen can get that new room they’ve been asking for and you can save a bit of time and money. 1. Rearrange: Before you can start rearranging your teen’s room you must declutter. Let a room makeover be the perfect opportunity to recycle or donate unused items. Then assess the room’s layout. If your teen moved from a twin to a double bed this may affect the room’s floor space. Try moving larger items like dressers, desks and beds to a new location and see how they influence the room’s flow. 2. Colour: There’s nothing easier or more affordable for creating a big impact than paint. Adding colour or swapping in more mature hues can

transform the space and help the room grow with them. If you’re hesitant to go for the bright or bold colour your teen has chosen, consider using it a bit more sparingly such as on an accent wall or as part of a stripe. A few popular colours include Roar PF36 or Ceviche PF 51 P5678 by Para Paint — try them in their Premium eggshell finish for easy washing and a low sheen finish. Soft greys or neutrals are the perfect balance for these hues. 3. Furniture: This may be a necessary upgrade if your teen is outgrowing their bed or desk, but items like a classic wood dresser or nightstand can be reclaimed and refinished. It’s as easy as sanding and repainting in a fresh colour that matches the new decor. Remember to use a primer and end with a melamine or semi-gloss finish to ensure the paint adheres properly and stands up to use. Paint a chair or a large table to create a cool workspace or experiment with a stripe to create a statement that both you and your teen can live with. 4. Accessories: From drapery and blinds to throw pillows, rugs and lighting, teens can easily and affordably acces-

sorize their space at one of the many large furniture retailers. Accessories help pull a room together, accentuating the theme and making it look pol-

ished. Remember to set a budget for your young adult and emphasize that purchases should be cohesive. At the end of the day, your teen’s room

Metrolinx owns the entire 54-acre Kodak lands site and plans to house an Eglinton Crosstown LRT station within the lower levels of Building 9 in time for the line’s official opening in 2021. According to spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins, the agency hasn’t decided what to do with the rest of the building, which was originally a recreation centre for hundreds of Kodak employees but is now in a significant state of disrepair having been abandoned for over a decade. With no direction taken, the Mount Dennis Community Association (MDCA) has

tions. Rick Ciccarelli of the MDCA said a detailed proposal was submitted to Metrolinx in June, but admitted the group doesn’t have the resources to

redevelop the structure without support. Still, Ciccarelli is optimistic Metrolinx has a shared interest not only to transform the long derelict, graffiti-tagged building into

a community hub for Mount Dennis, but tell the “story” of the Kodak lands, a vital local manufacturing centre for decades before the bankrupt photography company shut down operations for good in the early-2000s. “This was the last bastion of old industry, and there’s a story here which the building can honour depending on what Metrolinx wants to do,” said Ciccarelli last week. “If they say let’s do this project, we have community groups ready to pursue that.” Ciccarelli said the group has met with Metrolinx officials, as well as York South-Weston councillor Frances Nunziata and MPP Laura Albanese about its proposal, with plans for future meetings. The group also expects to meet again with Metrolinx in the near future. Nunziata, who was among a couple hundred residents and transit enthusiasts who turned out last week to watch

Metrolinx work crews temporarily relocate the entire building 60 metres away from its original location, said the community has a special fondness for the building and expressed support for designating the structure as a heritage property. “The Kodak building is one building in particular the community expressed a concern to preserve,” Nunziata said. Laura Alderson of the Mount Dennis BIA said she would like to see the entire Kodak lands, on which Metrolinx is also planning to build a maintenance and storage facility for the Crosstown, become a “catalyst” for redevelopment of the neighbourhood. “Our businesses need density and transportation typically brings density with it,” Alderson. “We’re hoping to get a lot of new density along the corridor, along Weston Road, and consequently new businesses and customers.”

King West closes and welcomes TIFF The grumbles have already started with the announcement this week a stretch of King Street West will close for multiple days during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The store would include Toronto-branded souvenirs, as well as Toronto Transit Commission tchotchke, like mugs and shirts. “The TTC has one of the strongest brands in Toronto, unfortunately there is no central place to purchase a TTC mug or T-shirt,” wrote McMahon in a letter to Toronto’s Government Management Committee. The store would sell City of Toronto- and TTC-branded goods, as well as “the best locally produced and/or

themed products.” The committee will consider the proposal at its Sept. 6 meeting, possibly asking for a report for its November meeting looking at the feasibility of establishing such a store. The report would look into a transparent selection process to choose an operator for the store, a look at the potential for satellite locations across Toronto, and a feasibility study as to whether there might be demand for Toronto- and TTC-branded goods.

TDSB, high school teachers reach tentative agreement The Toronto District School Board and its 5,400 permanent high school teachers have reached a tentative local agreement, the TDSB announced Aug. 26. The agreement must be

ratified by the TDSB and Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation members. The date of the ratification vote is still unkown. The permanent high school teachers are the last group to

Toronto is all for promoting safe sex in the city, so it’s only fitting that this year’s city-branded condoms are a reflection of that. The design for this year’s condomTO was revealed at Nathan Phillips Square Aug. 26 by St. Paul’s Councillor Joe Mihevc, chair of the Toronto Board of Health. The 2016 wrapper features a luminous threedimensional “TO” with black packaging as the background. The design was inspired by the now iconic TORONTO sign and its bright colors. “It’s a great opportunity to remind people that using condoms regularly make good health sense,” Mihevc said. This is the third edition of condomTO, conducted by Toronto Public Health (TPH). Since 1983, TPH been promoting and distributing condoms across the city to community agencies and

health organizations. “We distribute something like 3.8 million condoms through public health,” Mihevc said. “It’s an important part of the message to yes have sex but be safe. Sexually transmitted infections are the highest reported group of infectious diseases in Toronto. In 2014, more than 13,000 sexually transmitted infections were reported in Toronto alone and these numbers are especially high for young people.” Mihevc added that the campaign is meant to target young people especially those who aren’t practicing safe sex as much as they should. “I think sometimes we act first and think later and Public Health is there to say, ‘think first and practice safe sex today’. Put a condom in your wallet, or purse or pocket. Make sure you have the right tools (to be safe).” To help broaden the campaign’s reach, Toronto Public Health collaborated with the Toronto Parking Authority
