The new MicroSkills Youth Centre will be a “safe haven” for north Etobicoke youth ages 13 to 29, many of whom need

mentorship and role models, says its associate director of youth services. The move to digs double the size comes courtesy of the Rotary Club of Etobicoke and the Rotary Club of Toronto West,

which presented MicroSkills cheques Tuesday afternoon for the first $100,000 of its threeyear $300,000 commitment. Rotarians will also play a role in program development, and assist youth with leadership,

multimedia programs and by acting as mentors. “This is a safe haven from all the craziness in the community,” Michelle Tinker, MicroSkills’ associate director >>>demand, page 10

The Etobicoke Centennial Choir (ECC) is seeking passionate choristers of all ages to take part in its 48th season, and all interested singers are invited to attend the community-based choir’s open rehearsal next week. The rehearsal, which will take place Tuesday, Sept. 9 from 7:15 to 10 p.m. at Humber Valley United Church, 76 Anglesey Blvd., will give prospective choristers the opportunity to sing with the choir, meet Music Director Henry Renglich and fellow ECC choristers and explore what the choir has to offer, said Lauren Mayer, ECC spokesperson. “It will let them experience a typical rehearsal, get a feeling for the music, and see if it’s a good fit,” Mayer said, noting that ECC currently boasts about 40 members, but is looking to add new singers in all sections – soprano, alto, tenor and bass. >>>choir, page 11

Parents: map out a safe walking Lindsay Luby takes route as kids return to class her leave from Children’s Health ELECTION

municipal politics

and Safety Assoc. offers tips on keeping kids safe during school

DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

W

ith the arrival of the new school year comes a whole new set of safety concerns for parents – especially those with young children navigating their way to and from school for the first time. With that in mind, The Guardian turned to Veronika Bradley of the Children’s Health and Safety Association (CHASA) – an Etobicokebased organization whose mission is “to provide as much health and safety information to as many parents as possible” – for some back-toschool safety tips. As the school year begins, Bradley urges parents to map out the safest route to their child’s school or bus stop, and to walk that route with their children often. “The most important thing is getting to school safely and coming home safely,” she said. “So it’s important for parents to walk their kids to the school, so that everything around them starts to look familiar – the corner store they pass, the traffic lights they cross at, the signs – and mapping it out so that the child starts to feel secure. “By third or fourth time, parents can start to ask their child ‘Where do we go next? What do we have to be mindful of here?’ The more they answer the questions cor-

rectly, the more they’re going to feel secure in knowing their way to school safely.” In the CHASA’s online e-magazine at www.safekid. org, Bradley cautions parents to be aware that children can be impulsive and less cautious around traffic, and so urges them to “be realistic about your child’s pedestrian skills and carefully consider whether your child is ready to walk to school without adult supervision.” Children under the age of 10, the CHASA suggests, will likely need supervision – which is where the buddy system often comes in handy. When considering your child’s route to school, Bradley suggests parents select well-lit pathways that avoid passage through vacant lots or other sparsely populated areas. The chosen route should also be one with the fewest street crossings and intersections possible – and where crossing

guards are on duty to help aid in their safe passage. Another important lesson for parents to impart on their children this school year is to never, ever talk to strangers or go anywhere without a parent’s permission. ‘NO, GO AND TELL’ Bradley recommends the “No, Go, and Tell” approach: “Let’s face it, there are people out there with bad intentions and they aren’t always strangers – they could be someone you know, as well,” she said. “So the idea behind “No, Go, Tell” is, if a child feels something being done inappropriately – whether the way they’re being talked to, looked at, or asked to do something out of the ordinary – children should be taught to put their hand out and say ‘No’, then to ‘Go’ away and get out of the situation, and then to ‘Tell’ somebody immediately what has occurred.

“If you can rehearse that with your kids at home – No, Go, Tell – it could actually help an awful lot in making your kids feel secure about anything that might happen on the way to or home from school. The more you practice it, the better it works.” As an added safety measure, the CHASA urges parents to create a family password. As for all the drivers out there, CHASA cautions that everyone taking to the roads this week and beyond must be extra mindful of children walking and cycling to school. Like every September, police patrols in school zones will be increased to ensure drivers are abiding by the rules of the road, driving in accordance to speed limits, and avoiding distracting behaviour, such as talking on cell phone. SAFE IN THE CITY appears in The Etobicoke Guardian the first Thursday of every month. Email creason@insidetoronto.com if there’s a topic you would like covered.

Ward 4 Councillor Gloria Lindsay Luby won’t be running for her seat, ending a career that extended 11 terms and nearly 30 years, from the former City of Etobicoke to amalgamated Toronto. Lindsay Luby made the announcement on the fourth day of Toronto council’s last meeting last week, as council considered a motion thanking Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly for his work over the past year. Lindsay Luby said that she was pleased to have spent her career in municipal politics, as she said the municipal level of government was “where the rubber hits the road.” She said the lack of a party

system at city hall encouraged independent thought – which is something she appreciated. In a news release, Lindsay Luby said that she would be endorsing candidate Niels Christensen for councillor. He i s p a s t president of the Humber Valley Village Residents’ Association. “Although this decision was made with my family some time ago, I felt a duty to make sure my constituents were in good hands with a trustworthy replacement,” said Lindsay Luby in her statement. Also running in Ward 4 are John Campbell, Angelo Carnevale, Tony Chun, Rosemarie Mulhall, Adam Slobodian and Oscar VidalCalvet.

Battles need to be driven by more than NIMBYism

Write us

S

ometimes, the NIMBY (not-in-my-backyard) argument just doesn’t work. While it’s our democratic right to speak up when we’ve got something to say and we’re proud that resident and business groups do so in Toronto, make sure your issue is bigger than just you. Do your homework. Ensure you’ve got strong arguments and consider the bigger picture – is this change needed for the greater good? A group of Scarborough residents lost their NIMBY battle last week and were told to ‘suck it up’ after city council approved a controversial TTC bus garage in their neighbourhood. Despite arguing the location was inappropriate, the matter went through because the land was zoned heavy industrial (thus, buyer beware when you moved in, they were told), finding a new site would delay the project and drive up costs. TTC our view staff maintained there weren’t any other locations available Have something anyway. So residents were asked to ‘shoulder the load’ for the good to say before of the city. you speak out In that case, the project was needed and the location made sense, regardless the lack of alternative sites. Buyer beware may also be applied to homes that exist under flight paths. In Etobicoke, a residential group from Markland Wood is still pushing to change an increase in night flights from Pearson airport that fly over their homes, even though Transport Canada approved the changes last summer. City council recently agreed to have its city manager review the issue, though the local councillor reminded residents, ‘the airport is also a business.’ And just last week, Parkdale-High Park MPP Peggy Nash sent a letter to the Canadian International Air Show on behalf of her constituents to suggest the annual air show be relocated. Citing the ‘deafening’ and ‘frightening’ noise, she says it’s a major disturbance for many Toronto residents. It’s also a six-decade tradition that draws thousands of spectators and whose planes comply to noise regulations set out by Transport Canada. Plus, it’s over in three days. Chances the complaints will yield any change are slim. Take serious stock of your chances before pitching a NIMBY battle, because sometimes, they’re not worth the time. But if you’ve got the numbers, the facts and the political will, kudos to you for trying.

column

Olivia Chow lays it all on the table P olitics is a gamble. Voters place their bet on election day, when they put their tax dollars on one candidate or another who they think will best represent their interest over the next four years. Candidates and their campaign teams place multiple bets throughout the campaign. Some of those bets are small – and some of them are huge. Olivia Chow put all her money on the table Tuesday morning – with a financing plan that would raise a lot of money for transit and school breakfast programs, and for better or worse raise the profile of a campaign that over the summer seems to have stalled in the middle ground. Chow’s plan – to raise the land transfer tax on homes selling for over $2 million by one per cent, for an estimated $20 million a year – is a big step away from that middle ground. Until now, Chow’s campaign has been

david nickle the city

one of deathly moderation. She would keep taxes low but not freeze them; kill the costly Scarborough subway plan and return to a fully funded light rail plan to replace the Scarborough RT; add some buses; and do complicated things having to do with housing and small business and youth to provide marginal improvements. And in her person, she would provide the only sure-fire way to make sure Rob Ford wouldn’t be mayor. All of that combined seems to have mainly inspired the voters who supported her strongly in early 2014 to look elsewhere in the summer. Chow’s new fiscal policy might well drive off even more support. She is proposing a tax increase after all – an increase to a tax

upon which even former mayor David Miller (whose council imposed the thing) didn’t dare campaign. The only candidate charting in polls at all who’s talking about the necessity for tax increases is David Soknacki, and he’s stuck in single digits. The only candidate proposing specific tax increases is criminal lawyer Ari Goldkind, and he’s not charting at all. This land transfer tax idea is definitely an all-ornothing kind of thing. But one can see how Chow and her advisors think it might have some appeal. To begin with, it deals with a hole in Chow’s transit platform – specifically, that for her to increase bus service by 10 per cent would require more buses than the TTC has on the road. A land transfer tax increase covers that tidily. And it’s difficult to argue compassionately against funding more school breakfast programs.

As well, it is likely only a handful of Torontonians even remotely likely to vote Chow would be impacted by a land transfer tax increase on $2 million homes, and a thimble-full would be impacted enough to complain about it: hardships endured by such a tax grab are surely the first among first-world problems. Of course, that scarcely matters in the daily pile-ons that occur in a Toronto mayoralty race, and in coming out with this policy the Chow campaign has painted a target on their candidate for Tory and Ford certainly and perhaps Soknacki as well. But the calculation has obviously been made: better to be talked about as a tax-and-spend progressive, than not talked about at all.

Pat Joyce, chair of the Etobicoke chapter’s program committee, twice past-president and a CFUW regional director for south-central Ontario, spoke with the Guardian about the nearly 300-strong women’s club and its more than 60-year history in Etobicoke.

What is the CFUW chapter all about? What is your mandate?

We’re concerned with issues affecting women and girls, and other issues, like the environment, childcare, democracy. We’re part of the provincial, national and international university women’s group. We have more than 35 interest groups, including

there to discuss what they do and when they meet. People are welcome to come and shop around. Generally, people come because they know someone in the organization.

What is little-known about your chapter? What would people be surprised to learn about your organization?

Part of our membership fee automatically goes to our scholarship fund, which raises roughly $8,000 a year. We have longstanding bursaries with U of T, York, Ryerson and Humber College now that it grants degrees. Across the

country, the more than 100 CFUW clubs raise approximately $1 million a year in scholarship money for high school students, as well as for undergrad and post-grad university students. Each Chr istmas, our

interest groups donate raffle gifts. The $1,500 to $1,800 that raises each year is split between Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter and Women’s Habitat.

4

Who can become members of your group?

We ask that our members have an interest in public affairs, educational, cultural, political, social and related fields. We also welcome

5

people who don’t have university degrees. We ask that you support the objectives of the organization. Members are people who are outgoing;

who are seeking like-minded individuals to do interesting things with.

Tell us about your programs, and your 2014-2015 speaker series that begins this fall.

I’ve been the head of the program committee for eight years. I just love it. I seek out and book all the speakers for our monthly meetings. People always ask me, ‘How do you get these people?’ I tell them, ‘I ask them.’ Most people will say yes. It’s just a matter of finding the right date. On Oct. 9, we have journalist Catherine Porter talking

on Hot Spots of the World. She writes about social justice for the Toronto Star on topics such as international development, women’s rights, poverty, the environment and community activism. On Nov. 13, we have Ted Barris, an accomplished author, journalist and broadcaster speaking about his book, The Great Escape: A Canadian

Story. At Christmastime, we always have music and entertainment. On Jan. 8, our speaker will be Dena Coward, vice-president, project management, games planning and athlete village with the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Pan Am Games. We have a couple Pan Am Games’ venues in Etobicoke.

Tell us about your organization’s advocacy work.

It happens locally and nationally. Every year, clubs across the country develop resolutions. Last year, one of the resolutions approved at the national convention was enhancing the Canada Pension Plan to

provide additional CPP and QPP (Quebec Pension Plan) to compensate retired people who left the workforce due to child care or to care for an elderly, seriously ill or disabled family member. We discuss resolutions annu-

ally in March. Then we send our suggestions back to the national office and to the club that developed it. Then it goes to the annual AGM and the delegates vote on it. Then it becomes policy.

6

Where and when do you meet? How can someone become a member?

We hold our monthly meeting on the second Thursday night of every month at the Lothian Centre, 80 Lothian Ave. A reception starts at 7:30

p.m. Speakers start at 8 p.m. Anyone interested in becoming a member can come to our Sept. 11 meeting at 7 p.m. or contact our membership

It’s a place for young people to come to dream and be inspired.” At present, MicroSkills Youth Centre serves more than 200 youth per month from Kingsview Village-The Westway and WillowridgeMartingrove in a cramped, one-room storefront in the Westown Plaza at 235 Dixon Rd. at Islington Avenue. Later this month, it reopens in bright, renovated space a few doors down in the strip plaza. Since MicroSkills Youth Centre opened a decade ago, ever-increasing numbers of clients and program expansion outgrew the space. “It’s an incredible partnership. Not only are they funding our expansion, which is so important for the community, but they will be mentors and role models for our youth. They’re looking at how

The Rotary Clubs’ gift includes computer equipment and state-of-the-art software to give youth today’s tools to prepare them for a competitive job market. Joining forces strengthened the clubs’ project impact, said Jack Fleming, president-elect, Rotary Club of Etobicoke.

“Rotary clubs so often work in isolation,” he said. “This project has energized both clubs. “It has given us a sense of how we can do more of these things. This is a good way for us to be working. We can tackle big things and bring our different perspectives to the table.” Microskills is always seeking volunteers and partnerships. To learn more call 416-2477181.

weekly rehearsals To prepare for this year’s concert season, Mayer said prospective ECC choristers must be able to commit to weekly rehearsals Tuesdays from 7:15 to 10 p.m (from September to early June) and have some musical background (including an ability to read music and/or be a quick learner). As in previous years, ECC’s concert season will once again kick off with the

annual Sacred Traditions holiday concert Saturday, Dec. 6, featuring seasonal favourites guaranteed to “ignite the holiday spirit”, as well as a performance of perennial crowd pleaser, Handel’s Messiah. “ We h a v e n’t d o n e (Messiah) in quite a while, but it’s often a favourite for both audiences and choristers alike,” Mayer said, noting that ECC will tackle Part 1 of Handel’s classic, including the ever-popular Hallelujah chorus. The second concert of ECC’s 2014-2015 season, Heavenward, will take place on April 11, featuring a classical choral repertoire, with the choir performing “the sublime Requiem of Gabriel Faure with its hauntingly moving Pie Jesu, and the lyrically beautiful Stabat Mater by Rossini.” On June 6, Songs of Hope,

Songs of Inspiration will cap off ECC’s season by presenting a selection of songs, spirituals, Broadway favourites and classics “sure to inspire, move and uplift the spirit.” Individual concert tickets are $25 per person, or a threeconcert season subscription is available for $60. ADVERTORIAL

Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the

uildings often have multiple uses over the years, but no one could have anticipated the way this beautiful 1911 home would end up being used in the 1940s. Dr. Frederic J.A. Davidson was the son of Joseph Davidson, a wealthy timber merchant. Fluent in English, French, German, Italian, Greek, Latin and Arabic, Frederic graduated with a language degree from the University of Toronto in 1890. After a stint teaching French at Stanford University, he earned a PhD from Leipzig University in Germany. He then taught romance languages at the University of Cincinnati before returning to U of T as a professor. He was the author of several prose and poetry books in English and French. In 1890, Frederic married Helen Mason, and they had three children. In 1911, Frederic and Helen bought a 26-acre lot on the east side of today’s Royal York Road. Its east boundary was Mimico Creek, and its north and south boundaries were opposite

denise harris history corner where Norseman Street and Coney Road are today. They built a showcase home called “Brookwood”, modelled on a Swiss chalet with stone walls and a cedar roof. Surrounded by tall trees and large formal gardens, it quickly became a local landmark. During the Second World War it was difficult to find d o m e s t i c h e l p, s o t h e Davidsons leased out their home to Samuel Mandel who advertised it as an elegant new restaurant called the “Brookwood Club.” On January 25, 1941 at one o’clock in the morning, provincial police raided the premises, confiscating roulette wheels and other gambling paraphernalia. The police described Brookwood as the most luxurious gambling place they had ever seen. The immaculately dressed guests protested that they were simply there for dinner, although one man was found hiding under a bed with $1,800 in his pockets.

Mandel was charged with operating a gaming house and keeping liquor illegally. He was subsequently fined $300, and nine patrons were convicted of being “foundins.” Because wartime rules made it difficult to remove even the worst tenants, Brookwood likely remained a clandestine gambling hall for several years. Frederic passed away in 1946 in Toronto after a long illness. The house was torn down in 1961 and replaced by Kingsmill Secondary School. That school was demolished in 1988 and Bishop Allen Academy now stands in its place. Today, Frederic is remembered at U of T through an award in his memory instituted in 1948. Called the “Frederic Davidson Competition”, it awards prizes for the best essays on English or French literature. Denise Harris is the Heritage Officer of the Etobicoke Historical Society. Report abandoned bikes to the city To free up much needed bicycle parking, the City of Toronto is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying abandoned bikes for removal over the next few weeks. Residents can assist by calling 311 to report any bike that appears to be abandoned on sidewalks or within the public right-of-way. Callers are asked to identify the bike with as much information as possible, including the bike

frame colour, type and the location, preferably with an address. In 2013, the city removed more than 850 abandoned bikes. The city has also partnered with non-profit organizations to recycle salvageable parts. Bikes that are clearly derelict will be removed immediately. Where there is some question about whether a bike is abandoned, the city

will place a notification on the bike. If a bike has been tagged in error and the owner does not want it to be removed, he or she should simply remove the tag and park the bike at a different location. After 14 days, the city will remove any bicycles that remain tagged in the original locations.

Nine charged in Project Yellowbird investigation Six men and three women face nearly 150 charges following an investigation into a rash of residential break-ins and vehicle thefts in affluent areas of south Etobicoke, North York and midtown. Project Yellowbird began Dec. 22 when police from North York 32 Division responded to a break-in in which a yellow Porsche was stolen. The vehicle has been recovered in Lithuania. On Thursday, Aug. 28, police executed search warrants at seven homes, one business and seven commercial storage lockers and recovered vehicles and property believed to be worth more than $5 million. “What is unique about this

case is that this is the first time that criminal organizational charges have been laid against a crime group that is involved specifically and primarily in property-related crimes,” Deputy Chief Peter Sloly said Friday, Aug. 29. “Break and enters and auto thefts were the only two of the seven major crime indicators that were trending up this year... This investigation, the arrests, the charges that have been laid will take a major bite out of that particular crime trend.” About 50 break-ins have been linked to the investigation. Neighbourhoods targeted include The Kingsway, Rosedale and the Avenue Road and Lawrence Avenue

area. “This was an incredibly sophisticated criminal organization that had frustrated the best policing efforts that this province had to offer and this city had to offer,” Sloly said. On Friday, police displayed a sample of the property they recovered, including a 150year-old Bible and First World War medals. Police are now working on returning the items to their owners. Supt. Scott Gilbert of 53 Division said 23 stolen luxury vehicles were also recovered.

Vincent Massey school sale complete, daycare saved CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com A local developer’s recent purchase of the former Vincent Massey School means salvation for the historic Daisy Avenue building, the popular child-care centre that occupies it, and the 180 much-needed childcare spaces it provides. In a release issued Tuesday, Sept. 2, Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes announced the Aug. 29 sale of the 2.7-acre property to Dunpar Homes, highlighting the fact that Dunpar’s owner John Zanini had agreed to not only maintain the school building and its historic aspects, but also Vincent Massey Child Care – the lakeshore area’s largest daycare centre, which has operated year-round programming for 193 children up to 12 years old

on the site since 1985. “When we heard about the TDSB (Toronto District School Board) decision to sell Vincent Massey, the message from the community was loud and clear: losing the child-care spaces was not an option,” Grimes said in a statement. “Finding a way to keep the spots was priority No. 1...Thankfully, Dunpar stepped up and was able to get a deal done.” Built in 1929 and closed in 1983 due to declining enrollment, the Vincent Massey School site was identified as surplus to the needs of the TDSB in June last year and put up for sale through the Toronto Lands Corporation shortly thereafter. In purchasing the site, Zanini said he was happy for the opportunity to work with the community toward

“preserving the heritage” of Vincent Massey and, “more importantly, to maintain its current use as day-care centre.” “We look forward to continuing to work with the community to make this site a premier space in our community,” he said in a statement. Current Dunpar projects in Etobicoke include The Islington Towns luxury townhome development at Islington Avenue and Six Points Road, and Westwood Towns at 3879 Bloor St. W. While Dunpar’s plans for the Vincent Massey site, which includes about two acres of developable lands, have not yet been made known, Grimes said any development proposals for the property would have to go through the City of Toronto planning process – includ-

ing community consultation and city council approval – before anything could be built on the property. That process, he added, generally takes two years. News of the Vincent Massey sale to Dunpar came as a relief to both parents and school board officials, alike. “As a parent of a child who attends Vincent Massey Child Care, I am delighted to hear that the institution will be around for many years to come,” Matt Joice, a member of the Vincent Massey Child Care Parent

Council, said in a statement. Trustee Pamela Gough was likewise pleased: “The daycare will stay where it sits now to continue serving the community... I think it’s really, in many ways, the best possible outcome considering how difficult the situation was.”

Checking out the fresh produce The Etobicoke Civic Centre Farmers’ Market is the popular place to be on Saturday mornings A trip to the market: (Right and clockwise) Jane Khomyoak samples a very hot pepper at the market held each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; peaches are in abundance at this time of the year. There’s also lots of fresh corn, strawberries and vegetables. The Etobicoke Civic Centre Farmers Market is one of the busiest Farmers Markets in Toronto selling baked goods, vegetables, eggs, meats and more. It runs until November. Noorie Sahota and dad Varinder were up early to sell their vegetables. Right, Jane Khomyoak samples a very hot pepper.

KINGSWAY FACTS & HISTORY  Between 1906 and 1912, Robert Home Smith bought 3000 acres of land along the Humber River between Eglinton and Lake Ontario, which he developed into subdivisions such as Baby Point, Riverside Drive and Kingsway Park (now usually just called “The Kingsway”.)  The first two houses in The Kingsway were 43 and 47 The Kingsway, built in 1924 for Edward J. Cousins and Edward L. Cousins, father and son, respectively.  Between 1924 and 1947, 665 homes were built in The Kingsway.  The Kingsway was the first road paved in Etobicoke.  The Kingsway is wider than other roads in The Kingsway because Home Smith had planned to have an electric railway run down the centre of the street between Dundas and Bloor.  Royal York Road was named after the Royal York Golf Course, opened by a partnership between the Royal York Hotel and Robert Home Smith in 1929. That golf course was renamed St. George’s Golf and Country Club in 1946. To help celebrate the history of The Kingsway, a tent has been set up at The Taste of the Kingsway festival September 5-7. Inside is an exciting display of old photos of The Kingsway area, along with photos taken in the same locations today. Look for the sign “THEN & NOW in The Kingsway” on the tent at Bloor St. & Cliveden Ave. The Etobicoke Historical Society will be there to answer your questions all weekend!

INTRODUCING: THE KINGSWAY HOMESMITH MICRO-BEER The Kingsway Homesmith micro-beer pays homage to the community legend, Robert Home Smith— a complex man of high intellect. He was perhaps ambitious to a fault, however, his accomplishments in the area of land development and city planning dramatically expanded and changed the residential face of the Kingsway, and the City of Toronto. The Kingsway’s HomeSmith is a tribute to the man. It’s a beer on a mission! Ask for The Kingsway HomeSmith Blonde by name at participating restaurants!
