Teen wins coveted drag racing trophy Hailey Picciuto follows in big sister’s steps to the track TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Thirteen-year-old Hailey Picciuto took home her first National Hot Rod Association Junior Drag Racing League trophy last month. And it’s not just any trophy. The “Wally” is drag racing’s most prestigious, coveted trophy, named in honour of the late National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) founder Wally Parks. It’s the first time the “Wally” has been won in Canada. Picciuto beat Nicole Albin to win the “Wally” at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga’s Junior Dragster masters’ category by just 0.16 of a second on the eighth of a mile track. “It’s such a thrill,” she said Wednesday, before she showed a reporter and photographer her stuff in a parking lot. “I just like the rush it gives me. Racing is not really popular, like soccer.” The “Wally” is a 12-pound

metal trophy of Parks in a racing suit posing with a giant dragster tire. “It’s the Oscar of drag racing,” Hailey’s mom, Kim, said of the trophy. There’s a Br iggs and Stratton, 22-horsepower motor fueled by methanol in her KCS-built 14-foot long, 218-pound fiberglass chassis painted Mustang red with automatic snowmobile clutches. It costs approximately $10,000 used. Junior drag racing runs in the Picciuto family’s blood. Hailey’s older sister, Rachel, 17, holds five junior drag racing championships in her blue dragster. The Guardian profiled Rachel in a June 2006 article when the then 11-year-old took the red dragster her younger sister Hailey now races to their school, Holy Angels Catholic Elementary School, on the last day of school. Rachel is in her final year of junior drag racing. Soon, she >>>RACERS, page 8

Hailey Picciuto, 13, recently won the National Hot Rod Association's "Wally" award for drag racing. Picciuto started competing as an eight year old, and this year won against a field of competitors after she covered an eighth of a mile in just 7.9 seconds.

Take the chaos out of breakfast According to Breakfast Clubs of Canada, studies show that kids who eat a healthy, balanced breakfast are more interested in school, are better able to concentrate, and have stronger social skills than those who don't. Here are some easy tips to get kids pumped about breakfast: • Make breakfast a family affair: The easiest way to encourage kids to eat a healthy breakfast is for parents to do the same. Set time aside each morning to sit down and eat as a family. Kids

are much more likely to imitate the behaviours they observe. • Get the kids involved: Let the kids contribute to menu selection to make them feel invested in breakfast. Big families can plan a weekly schedule that allows each child to participate on a given day. This approach also helps families plan ahead (and even prepare the night before), making breakfast more enjoyable in the morning. • Think outside the plate: Breakfast smoothies are an easy way

to pack a nutritious punch. Here's an easy one using ingredients that most families have in their kitchen: put 2 cups of orange juice, ½ cup of strawberry yoghurt, 5-6 whole strawberries, a peeled banana and 5 ice cubes in a blender. Blend until smooth. Customize the consistency by adding more or less of any of the ingredients or swap the strawberries for raspberries, depending on preference. It's that easy. – www.newscanada.com

Keep carpool kids smiling The start of the school year brings many new experiences for kids including new friends, routines, sports leagues and after-school activities. For parents, an easy way to manage activities is to join a carpool to help save time, be kind to the environment and encourage kids to make friends along the way. Whether for trips to school, hockey, or ballet, hosting a carpool comes with obligations to deliver kids on-time, home safe and keep them entertained. Here are some tips to keep the carpool gang smiling during any car ride: • Karaoke Sing-a-Longs: Create a playlist full of kid-friendly songs like “Old MacDonald had a farm” or “Take me out to the ball game.” Have the kids sing-along and for a true karaoke experience, turn down the radio music every few minutes to test their skills. • Tablet Games: Bring your tablet along for the ride and let the kids each take a turn at playing Angry Birds or Cut the Rope. “Many kids are comfortable with electron-

ics – whether it’s navigating the Internet or mastering a handheld game. They’re also a fun way for kids to learn basic skills, such as reading and mathematics, as many tablets come pre-loaded with these kid-friendly applications. • Guess Who Games: Pick a well-known personality or character, such as Dora the Explorer or Caillouand encourage the group to ask

questions or give hints to determine who it is, such as “She has a best friend named Boots.” • Mobile TV On-the-Go: Keep the kids entertained with your smartphone by streaming children’s programming such as Treehouse, YTV, Teletoon and CBC Kids. You can also stream sports, news, entertainment and select children’s programming all on your smartphones.

Overcoming the stigma of social housing T

he perception that Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) properties breed crime is one that newly hired president and CEO Eugene Jones is trying to overcome. “Crime comes to social housing,” said Jones when he toured an apartment building near Jane Street and Finch Avenue with Mayor Rob Ford earlier this summer. “Social housing doesn’t cause crime.” He added their goal is to do what they can to deter criminal our view activity from coming on their Partnerships property. Credit should be given where create safer it’s due. The Etobicoke Guardian communities has featured recent events in TCHC neighbourhoods, demonstrating the positive work by the social housing company to help create a safer environment for residents. A couple of weeks ago, TCHC in partnership with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment’s Team Up Foundation, launched the KickStart program at Downsview Park designed to teach soccer skills to kids aged six to 12, while also providing them with valuable self-esteem, fair play and leadership lessons. Participating youth from neighbourhoods such as Mabelle in Etobicoke, Lawrence Heights in North York, and Kingston-Galloway, all got the opportunity to experience something new – and positive. As Jones noted, it allowed the children to look up to new role models and make new friends. In the city’s west end, residents living in two TCHC buildings in the Dundas Street West and Scarlett Road area will be celebrating the two-year anniversary of their tenant food-sharing program this Wednesday. That initiative came about through the hard work and perseverance of a group of resident volunteers in partnership with the Daily Bread Food Bank and Four Villages Community Health Centre. In both cases, TCHC residents weren’t able to work in isolation to improve their own living conditions. Partnerships were integral in slowly helping overcome the stigma of TCHC communities as unsafe. But there’s still work that needs to be done, highlighted most recently by the violent incident that took place at a TCHC site on Danzig Street in July. In the wake of that gun violence, which killed two people and wounded 23 others, Ann-Marie Moulton, outreach co-ordinator for Progress Church that serves the Kingston-Galloway neighbourhood said, “If you’re in a community where you’ve never talked to your neighbours, you are a problem.” Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. To the editor: As a former high school teacher, the beginning of September always meant back to school. I realize now that backto-school time is the perfect time to have a frank conversation with children about the importance of managing their personal finances, especially if they are moving out on their own. The agency I lead, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC), was established in 2001 to help Canadian consumers gain a better understanding of financial products and services. The Government of Canada has given FCAC the mandate to foster financial literacy. The agency continues to develop resources for students and all Canadians to help them strengthen their knowledge, skills and confidence to make responsible financial decisions. Politics must be controlled through ballot box

M

ission accomplished, sort of. Both the prosecution and defence in the case against Mayor Rob Ford have won by achieving the publicity they craved. For the many enemies of Ford, the opportunity to broadcast their opinions must have been heaven. Social media was full of nastiness: jibes at the mayor’s eating habits, his lack of university education, and allegations of corruption. The prosecution lawyer succeeded in bringing the case into open court. Verbatim accounts of Ford’s earlier testimony were available for anyone with an Internet connection. The other side was no better. At any one of many points the mayor could have ended the circus. Whether through a payment of the $3,150 in question, agreeing to

Beyond the headlines

david soknacki

conclusions from the city’s integrity commission, or simply following council procedure, he could have stopped it all. Instead, both sides have accomplished their primary goal of wallowing in publicity. As the mayor’s lawyer submitted to the court, publicity may be a motivating factor for the prosecution. It certainly must have been for the defence. Instead of silence at council and avoiding the entire issue, the mayor chose to cast the issue in terms of helping children through his foundation. While the prosecution

and defence may have succeeded, it’s too bad neither party thought through the public policy consequences of their willfulness. Consider for a moment if the prosecution were to win completely, which means Ford is removed from office and forbidden to seek immediate re-election. Is the public better served by paying millions for a new election because of $3,000? Will it be our new expectation to reverse elections through the courts? Are we to encourage litigation on political matters? Similarly, the mayor’s position is indefensible. Even if council acted outside of its jurisdiction in demanding payment, even if the integrity commissioner and former administration could have handled the complaint better, and regardless of the mayor’s personal beliefs, he fails to understand that mayors

must reserve their highest loyalty for our civic institutions. A pox on both sides. The judge now has the difficult job of trying to achieve the best public policy decision. Without a doubt he must censure the mayor’s behavior. Maybe Justice Hackland can succeed in modifying the mayor’s irresponsibility when so many have failed. At the same time, he must be careful to make sure we citizens retain control of politics through the ballot box, rather than through judges and lawyers in the courts. A successful judgment will support our institutions, and make our society a little less polarized, even if neither of the antagonists will be satisfied. n David Soknacki is a former City of Toronto councillor and budget chief. >>>from page 1 Haven is a non-profit charitable organization with a mission to help meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of people in Etobicoke, Mississauga and downtown Toronto who struggle in poverty or in crisis. It runs a food bank, a donated clothes’ room, various counselling groups and a homeless support program. “Hope starts here” reads the mandate on its website. Haven opened in May 2009 and continues to operate without core government funding, relying solely on fundraising and donations. Then Queensway Cathedral church across the street purchased the building, formerly operated as the strip club Casino Gentleman’s Lounge, to create Haven. The woman who donated the bat has been a member of the congregation of the now-renamed church for the past five years.

Bidder credits Jesus “Really, the credit doesn’t belong to me. It really goes to Jesus,” said the woman who volunteers at Haven. “I was merely being obedient. Jesus says we need to feed the hungry and clothe the homeless. I felt that need. I was simply able to do this at this time.” The woman paid $2,500 for the bat in Haven’s silent auction. Since, a second supporter has paid an additional $1,500 for the bat. Neither a love of Roberto Alomar or of Major League Baseball drew the woman to the bat, she said. “I have a big heart for people. It was a good way for me to help the homeless, who are probably society’s most unrecognized (need). Haven is an organization that helps so many people. They don’t turn anybody away. They love people and have a positive, caring attitude that causes

Racers wear fire jackets, drive in metal cage to ensure safety >>>from page 1 may make the leap into a top fueler, capable of speeds as fast as 200 mph, said their dad, Carmine. At age eight, Rachel watched Right on Track, a 2003 Disney channel movie based on the true story of sisters Erica and Courtney Enders who get into drag racing and make it all the way to the top. She was hooked, her dad recalled. “I told her, ‘If you bring up your grades, if you show me you can drive

the snowmobile yourself at the cottage, I’ll look into it.’ So she’d take the snowmobile out and say, ‘look, Daddy.’ That was it. Then her sister followed in her footsteps.” Hailey beat out an 18-car field when she won her first race at age 11. “I was pretty stoked. I’d won my first race ever,” she said. Carmine recalled Hailey’s excitement after winning the race. “We saw she had her arms up, then

all of a sudden we saw her legs. She was doing cartwheels.” Car safety components and equipment are regulated in the industry. The girls wear fire jackets, neck braces and DOT-approved helmets and secure their arms in straps to prevent them from leaving the car’s protective metal cage. The dragster has kill switches, electronic and mechanical. She also wears a fourpoint seat belt harness belted at the waist and across her shoulders

that Carmine recertifies every two years. Joe Zerafa has been the girls’ “crew chief” for the past three years. Zerafa’s son, Justin, 22, is a five-time consecutive track champion, who won the national event in Pittsburgh, Penn. Although Justin is taking a break from racing, his dad still goes to the track for every race. “I do it for the kids. When I go to the track, I still take all my (car) parts with me,” said Zerafa, noting that not

all racers’ families are good about sharing equipment and parts when kids’ cars break down. The family makes the 90-minute drive to the Cayuga track 13 to 17 times a year in their motorhome hauling the dragsters and equipment in a trailer. The next race is Sept. 15, followed by the last race of the season on Oct. 6. “It’s really neat to watch. I tell everyone, ‘Go. Just for one day.’” Kim said.

Developer tight-lipped about plans >>>from page 1 (the local residents). We’re new to the neighbourhood and we want to be a part of it.” While Urbancorp – one of the largest builders of luxury condominium suites, townhomes and lofts in Toronto – may be new to Etobicoke, developing homes on former school sites is old hat for the 20-year-old developer and building company. C u r r e n t l y, o n e o f Urbancorp’s developments in the east end of the city – The Neighbourhoods of Queen St. e. – is seeing the redevelopment of three old Catholic school sites into three distinct luxury townhome and lowrise communities. “A few years ago, some old school sites came up for sale in the east end of Toronto – three separate sites – and we were successful in the purchase,” Lam explained. “We brought it out to market and it was well received and sold very well. We now see that there’s potential here at Alderwood, too, and we’re very happy that we’re the successful candidate on this site.” While Lam said it is too early in the process to dis-

cuss the specific plans for the Alderwood site, she said Urbancorp will soon be meeting with Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes to “apprise” him of their proposal and get his feedback. After that, Urbancorp is hoping to host a community meeting to let their new neighbours in on their plans. Since the Toronto Lands Corporation – or TLC, the arms-length body of the Toronto District School Board that manages and sells its surplus properties – put the Alderwood C.I. up for sale last year, speculation in the surrounding community has run rampant as to who might buy the school and what sort of development would go in. Residents at several packed community meetings were vocal about their desire to see the school remain a school. “We don’t want community housing, we don’t want 20-storey condos, we don’t want extra bus routes coming through our neighbourhood,” said one woman at a meeting last October. At that same meeting, residents learned that the

Alderwood site is situated within an Residential 3 (R3) zone under the zoning bylaw, which means it’s currently only approved for certain types of residential buildings, including detached homes, semidetached homes, duplexes and triplexes. At April’s meeting of Etobicoke York Community Council, Grimes fortified council’s resolve that the zoning of the site remain as such by putting forth – and receiving approval for – a motion requesting that any prospective developers of the Alderwood site be advised of community council’s desire to see “single detached dwellings with development standards in accordance with the existing R3 zoning development standards.” While Lam declined to comment yet on whether or not single-family homes are a part of Urbancorp’s vision for the Alderwood site, she said she’s confident their development plan will be the right fit for the neighbourhood.
