Groom Allan Tracey, left, places the ring on the finger of his bride Cathy Chalklin and Mimico Presbyterian Church’s Pastor Robert Howard officiates during the wedding ceremony held Saturday at Centennial Park’s Diamond Beach baseball diamond.
Couple says ‘I do’ at home plate Baseball fans get hitched in the middle of a slo-pitch tournament CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Pastor Rob Howard has officiated all kinds of “unique” weddings, but this weekend marked his first-ever ceremony on a baseball diamond – where the
sneakered and T-shirted bride walked beneath an archway of baseball bats to John Fogerty’s Centerfield, and the rings were carried to the home plate altar in a Cracker Jack box by a pinkbaseball-gloved flower girl. “I think it was an amazing
idea,” said Howard, of Mimico Presbyterian Church, just minutes after Cathy Chalklin sang her “I dos” to Allan Tracey to the tune of Take Me Out to the Ball Game on Saturday at the Diamond Beach sports complex in Etobicoke’s Centennial Park.
“It really connects their love for each other to their love for sport.” The baseball-loving couple, who met on an online dating site five years ago, have spent much of their time together >>>it was, page 6
While Mayor Rob Ford is in hospital focusing on his health and treatment, a new poll indicates he is the clear frontrunner to recapture the Ward 2 Toronto council seat he held for a decade before becoming mayor. Some 59 per cent of residents polled Saturday in north Etobicoke’s Ward 2 said they intend to vote for Ford on Oct. 27. Ford has a strong lead on the main challenger, Rexdale native, financial planner and insurance company resolution manager Andray Domise who received 26 per cent support. Though Ford only entered the Ward 2 race Friday afternoon minutes before the city deadline for candidates to register or drop out of the October municipal vote, his strong polling comes as no surprise. “Rob Ford can win even if he doesn’t campaign, even if he’s >>>domise, page 17

A story on Page 1 of the Sept. 11 edition of The Etobicoke Guardian, headlined ‘Friends of Mykel HenryWright rally around his family’, inaccurately defined the relationship between the victims, Henry-Wright and Cassandra Tanovich. In fact, the two were just friends. The Guardian regrets the error.

Pan Am Games to highlight our wonderful city T
he Pan Am/Parapan Games are coming to Toronto next summer, bringing thousands of athletes and tens of thousands of fans and media with them. Tickets went on sale this week, and Toronto residents have until Oct. 6 to order early-bird tickets for the events they most want to see by going to TORONTO2015.org/tickets While they are not on the same scale as the Olympics, the Pan Am Games will feature approximately 6,000 top athletes from 41 countries in North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean competing in 36 our view sports. From July 7 to 26, Toronto will be the place to be for competition Civic pride in many of those sports including track and field, aquatics, sparked by basketball, BMX biking, tennis 2015 Games and much more. And right after the Pan Am Games finish, the Parapan Am Games take centre stage in Toronto from Aug. 7 to 15. What makes these games especially exciting is that not all of the events are centred in the downtown core. They’ve been spread out in facilities from the York University campus in North York to Centennial Park in Etobicoke and into east Scarborough. It makes the Games accessible to so many more fans, and will in a number of cases give residents the opportunity to watch international athletics in facilities they can walk to from their homes. From what we see and hear among our newspaper’s readers, there’s great excitement about next summer’s games. Residents are looking forward to attending events in state-of-the-art facilities such as the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Scarborough that will host aquatics, fencing, pentathlon and roller sports events next summer. They are also looking forward to the legacy of these facilities in their communities. For more on the Games and their impact on our communities, see our feature series at bit.ly/Agn5R0 There’s also no small amount of civic pride involved in hosting these games. A good part of the world will be coming to visit us next summer, and we are looking forward to showing them what a wonderful city Toronto is.

Stalled mayoral race gives voters time to ponder the big questions
T
he Ford family’s personal and political kerfuffle last week sent some serious shockwaves into the early part of this week of the mayoral campaign – serious enough to send things into a bona fide stall. On Monday and Tuesday, three of four mayoral debates died on the vine. Olivia Chow got out on Tuesday morning to host a news conference, rescheduled from last week, to let voters know that four west-end progressive councillors were behind her mayoral bid. John Tory, the candidate responsible for putting the kibosh on those three debates, held a news conference an hour later that was somehow less surprising: to remind voters that he intended to keep promises related to gridlock that he’d made during the summer. Up until the print deadline for this column Tuesday after-
david nickle the city noon, newly minted mayoral candidate Doug Ford was spending his time at the bedside of newly minted Ward 2 council candidate Rob Ford – so not saying much of anything. The sound of shuffling feet was just about deafening. Quiet times aren’t always a bad thing, though. And in this one, it might just be useful to sit a spell, and in the absence of blaring pitches of mayoral agendas – just think a bit about where we are, where we’ve been, and where we want to go. Until last week, Toronto was in what ex-mayoral candidate David Soknacki correctly pegged as a referendum on Mayor Rob Ford. For four years, Ford put many Torontonians through a meat grinder of embarrassment, insult, and privation. His
activities somehow provided some measure of comfort to others. We lined up on either side of that very sharp line Ford drew: with Ford More Years on one side, and really everything else on the other. When Doug Ford gets going, he’ll be presenting Mayor Ford’s agenda without the drug use – and also without his little brother’s singular level of charisma that would make him a serious threat. Which is to say: here on in, this election might finally just be about the ideas. Well, not entirely the ideas: we’re all a little partisan, some casting ballots for New Democrats and certain Liberals, others voting for certain other Liberals and Conservatives. Some of us feel strongly enough about that to pick a mayor now. But for the rest of us: what an unexpected opportunity to pick not so much the person of the mayor, but the kind of
city we want. In this quiet time we might ask: do we really want to pay more taxes to build a subway in Scarborough and more stations on an electrified GO line? Would we rather spend that billion-dollar property tax levy to build a downtown relief line, and skim more tax revenue from the land transfer tax to build a downtown relief subway line and buy more buses? Do we want to contract out garbage collection in the city or not? What about bike lanes? Painted, separated, or none at all? It’s so much easier to think about these questions when we’re not also deciding how we feel about all the other ugly matters that have consumed us until now. Clarity is a rare and wonderful thing. Best savour it while it lasts. David Nickle is The Guardian’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Find him on Twitter: @ DavidNickle

It was the bride’s childhood dream to be married on a ball diamond >>>from page 1 bonding over their shared passion for the game – playing together on and running not just one, but two Recreational Slo-Pitch Association (RSPA) teams, both sponsored by Tracey’s boss at Upper Deck Flooring, former Blue Jays pitcher Paul Spoljaric. So it only made sense to both Chalklin and Tracey that they should exchange their vows on baseball’s most holied of grounds – home plate. “As a kid, I always looked out at that ballpark and dreamed that I’d like to have my wedding on a ball diamond, said Chalklin, a Royal York Collegiate grad who grew up across the street from the ball diamonds at Queensway Park. “It didn’t work out with my first wedding – I’ve been there, done that with the white wedding dress and all that. But when I met Allan, one of the first things we connected on was baseball. So when it came time to plan our wedding, I just kind of threw the idea out
there, thinking he would look at me like I was nuts – but he didn’t, so we just snowballed with it. Added Tracey: “I thought it was a great idea. We enjoy playing, and the people that we play with here are a good bunch of people. They’re all very close friends now, so it seemed fitting to run with it. With the help of de facto wedding planners Terry Jackson and Krista Currie, what began as Chalklin’s girlhood dream to be married on a baseball diamond soon turned into the Diamonds on Diamond wedding tournament – a full-fledged baseball tourney featuring two divisions, eight teams, and a wedding ceremony smack dab in the middle of it all. “I’ve run tournaments for quite a long time, but I’ve never run a wedding tournament – I’ve never even heard of one – so I thought, ‘Why not? around the baseline of the infield, while the two captains from each of the eight tournament teams took up baseball bats to form a bridal archway. As Fogerty’s familiar lyrics “Put me in, Coach filled the air, Chalklin made her way down the makeshift aisle and
through the passageway of baseball bats to home plate, where the groom-to-be and Pastor Howard, clad in an umpire’s shirt, awaited her. In the middle of the couple’s vows, the clouds suddenly broke open to let in a fleeting stream of sunlight – a sign from above that Tracey took to mean the arrival of his late parents and sisters to the ceremony. “When sun opened up, I knew they were there; that they wanted to see, Tracey said, explaining why he “choked up a bit during his vows. Following the exchange of rings, both Chalklin, Tracey and their guests headed back up to the Diamond Beach clubhouse for a quick congratulatory beer, before making their way back out to the field to play out the second half of the tournament – followed by a buffet dinner and karaoke reception. Interactive art exhibits highlight three days of Culture Days events
Humber College and Lakeshore Arts present more than 50 events Sept. 26 to 28
Event Highlights 1) Creating the Wave - Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Humber College’s Cottage C, 7 Col. Samuel Smith Park Dr. This activity will inspire the landscape by creating the largest food-tin wave Toronto has ever seen. Built from the generosity of the community, visitors can help by bringing a non-perishable can of food to add to the sculpture. All tins will then be donated to the Daily Bread Food Bank.
CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com The Culture Days arts festival is returning to Etobicoke-Lakeshore this month with its largest ever lineup – featuring 51 free, interactive activities and events for the whole family. Presented by Humber College and Lakeshore Arts, the third annual three-day festival will hit Lake Shore Boulevard West from 32nd Street to Superior Avenue, from Friday, Sept. 26 to Sunday, Sept. 28. “Culture Days is actually a national festival and its goal is to promote the engagement of the art and cultural life of local communities,” said Tom Haxell, event co-ordinator for Humber College’s Lakeshore Campus. “It does this by hosting a festival weekend where local artists and community organizers are invited to stage free and interactive art- and culture-based activities.” Over the past two years that Humber and Lakeshore Arts have teamed up to host Culture Days in Etobicoke Lakeshore, the festival has only grown in both scope and participation, Haxell added. In its first year in 2012, the local Culture Days fest hosted 18 activities and received 900 visits, while last year’s second annual event drew more than 2,000 visits to 31 activities. With this year’s slate of 51 activities – including the return of Lakeshore Arts’ Cardboard Community and Humber’s Aboriginal Community Celebration and Social at The Assembly Hall – Haxell said Culture Days 2014 is expected to draw more than 3,100 visits. “I personally think it’s going to be huge – and even more so in two or three years time,” he said, noting that the buzz currently being generated
2) Cardboard Community Saturday, Sept. 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mimico Square, 2445 Lake Shore Blvd. W. Join Lakeshore Arts as they once again transform Mimico Square into an architectural cardboard kingdom. This is family friendly event where visitors are invited to be the architect in creating the community of their dreams out of recycled materials. 3) Historic Tunnel Tours - Saturday, Sept. 27 at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., from Humber College’s L Building, 19 Col. Samuel Smith Dr. Join Humber Business professor and history buff Steve Bang on a journey back in time at the Lakeshore Campus, once known as the Mimico Asylum. Learn the history behind the construction of the buildings now called the cottages and see first-hand the extensive tunnel system. Tours last about an hour and 15 minutes. Registration is required at tunneltours. eventbrite.ca 4) Aboriginal Community Celebration and Social - Saturday, Sept. 27 from noon to 3 p.m. at The Assembly Hall, 1 Col. by Culture Days nearly rivals that of the wildly popular Nuit Blanche. “With Culture Days, we like to really stress that it’s all free and it’s all interactive, so you’re going to be learning something and you’re going to be doing something at every activity.” One of this year’s stand-out interactive exhibitions is the Wishing Well installation at Humber’s L Space Gallery, in Lakeshore Campus’ L Building at 19 Col. Samuel Smith Park Dr. Presented by the Frog in Hand artist collective, the installation has
been on since Aug. 25 and will come to a close during the Culture Days festival. “We wanted to create an interactive exhibition where visitors can come in and really take ownership of the space, so they can come in, write down or draw out their wish for the upcoming year, then put it into a balloon, (blow up the balloon), and then add it to the well,” said Tara Mazurk, L Space Gallery’s curatorial and collections planner. “It can be the most intimate wish or it can be a simple wish, like ‘I want more coffee today’ – it’s really just
about proactively thinking about our own ambitions.” With close to 500 wishes so far collected inside Wishing Well balloons, Mazurk said dancers from the Frog in Hand collective will initiate a “balloon ceremony” Saturday, Sept. 27 from 1 to 4 p.m., during which they will retrieve the wishes and create movements based on them. “Then the audience members will be invited to take someone else’s wish home with them so it’s both an intimate and a social/shared experience,” she said, To get this year’s Etobicoke Lakeshore Culture Days festivities going, Lakeshore Arts and Mimicoby-the-Lake BIA will host a first-ever kick-off event at Mimico Square, 2445 Lake Shore Blvd. W., Friday,
ful, vibrant colours of their traditional regalia at Humber College’s Aboriginal Pow-Wow, featuring traditional drumming, singing and dancing in a showcase of the spirit of Canada’s First Nations peoples. 5) Build with a LEGO Master Builder - Saturday, Sept. 27 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Demetrius, 3338 Lake Shore Blvd. W. As Canada’s original Master Model Builder, Graeme Dymond (a.k.a BrickManGraeme) is a professional artist who builds with LEGO bricks for a living. Come build great LEGO sculptures and creation with Dymond, and learn some tips and tricks. 6) Humans of Lakeshore - Sunday, Sept. 28 from 2 to 3 p.m. at LAMP Community Health Centre, 185 Fifth St. Hosted by the South Etobicoke Youth Assembly (SEYA) and inspired by Humans of New York on Instagram, this event will see youth take photos of willing participants on Lake Shore and ask them: What words of advice would you give to the youth of today, or what advice would you give your 14-year-old self? 7) Bucket Drumming with Pros Sunday, Sept. 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lakeshore Arts, 2422 Lake Shore Blvd. W. Pro drummer David Fudge and Max Senitt will demonstrate drumming techniques adapted for playing on buckets. Attendees will learn how to achieve different sounds, along with basic drumming techniques. A limited number (about 20) buckets and drumsticks will be provided for participants.
Sept. 26 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. featuring Beatles tribute band, Day Tripper. In addition to a marketplace opening at 6 p.m., at which visitors are urged to preview some of the Culture Days weekend events, kickoff attendees are also encouraged to show off their creative talents by making a music shaker with which to rock out to Day Tripper’s 7 p.m. performance. “The kick-off is new this year; we’ve never done it before, so it’s going to be really exciting,” Haxell said. “It’s going to be great.” For more information about the festival – including a full list of all 51 events – go to www.culturedays. ca, facebook at www.facebook.com/ elculturedays, or follow @ELCultureDays on Twitter.

Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System
What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks.
What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.
HAVE YOU LOOKED AT ALL SIDES OF YOUR ROOF RECENTLY?
What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis. Peter & Greg Walker Contracting has been serving the roofing needs of Toronto homeowners since 1981. They are members of the Certified Contractors Network, have manufacturer certified installers, are fully insured and have been voted Etobicoke’s “Top Roofing Company” 13 times (including 2014).

Tory skips out on transit debate Mayoral front runner John Tory withdrew from a scheduled transit debate this week with Olivia Chow just a few hours before it was scheduled to begin. The event still took place as scheduled on Monday, but with only Chow taking part. Earlier in the day, Tory’s campaign team released a media statement confirming he would not attend the Big Transit Mayoral Debate, which was co-organized by the advocacy group TTCriders and the Ryerson University Student Union. Tory blamed “extraordinary demands” on his time along with Doug Ford’s entry into the mayoral race for his withdrawal from the debate. Chow used the opportunity to hold a solo Q and A on her transit plans – and continually criticize the absent Tory in the process. Top mayoral candidates Tory, Ford and Chow offer transit plans full of holes RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com She calls it the Finch Train. That’s Idil Burale’s nickname for the Finch West LRT line, a future rapid transit connection the Ward 1 Etobicoke North candidate is staking her political future on. “I tell people it’s just like a GO train, and it will go to Humber College,” said Burale last week at her campaign office in Rowntree Plaza, just off Kipling Avenue. Burale conceded she’s got her work cut out for her in besting incumbent councillor Vince Cristanti, who is opposed to the Finch LRT plan, in the Oct. 27 municipal election. She strongly believes LRT, and not a subway, will prove a catalyst for generating local employment and ending the decades long dependency on infrequent bus service, which makes travelling within the north Etobicoke ward an exercise in frustration. Without an actual LRT line operating within the city, Burale said it’s difficult to convince people of its benefits or fight off accusations the technology is more streetcar than subway. “Getting people to imagine what isn’t there is very hard, and that’s why they don’t support LRT firsthand,” she said. Regardless of the preference of one mode of transportation over another, recent opinion polls suggest the number one municipal election issue in Toronto is improving public transit. Which is why each of the main three mayoral candidates, John Tory, Doug Ford and Olivia Chow, have made new transit plans signature components of their respective campaign platforms. Tory, who most opinion polls project as leading the race to replace Rob Ford as mayor, is pushing his Smart Track “surface subway” plan, which would see the establishment of a rapid transit corridor covering 53 kilometres and allowing for a connections with the Scarborough subway
and the Eglinton Crosstown LRT. Tory also supports building the Scarborough subway and establishing new TTC express bus routes. But the centrepiece of his transit plan is the 22-stop Smart Track, which he promises will take only seven years to build – compared to at least eight to 10 years for a Downtown Relief subway Line (DRL) – since the vast majority of it will be located on GO Transit rail lines. Doug Ford, who only last week announced he will replace his ailing brother in the mayoral race, is campaigning on the familiar Rob Ford slogan of “subways, subways, subways” promising $9-billion worth of new underground lines, including replacing LRT lines set for construction on Sheppard Avenue and Finch Avenue. The Ford campaign also promises to bury all of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, currently under construction. Right now, the eastern section of the line is planned to run above ground into Scarborough along Eglinton Avenue to Kennedy station. The Ford campaign also promises to complete the Scarborough subway extension from Kennedy station to McCowan Road and Sheppard Avenue. Chow, who most polls presently place third in the race, is also promising a new subway line, the DRL. But unlike Tory and Ford, she wants to complete LRT lines already approved and funded by the province, for Finch West and Sheppard. Chow would also revert the Scarborough subway extension back to an LRT, as well as provide the TTC with an additional $15 million per year to fund its bus operations. PLANS LACK SPECIFICS One transit watcher believes all of the plans to build new transit put forth by the main three mayoral candidates lack key details. Richard Gilbert is a former
Metro Toronto and City of Toronto councillor from Davenport who held office for 15 years from 1976 to 1991, before the amalgamation of the six former municipalities. Of SmartTrack, Gilbert, who is now a transportation and energy consultant, said the plan was not well worked out. The funding for it is completely up in the air, he said. “There’s not a single penny allocated to it,” said Gilbert. “It relies on provincial and federal money that hasn’t even been requested.” Tory has pledged not to raise property taxes to pay for the municipal share of SmartTrack, instead making use of a funding mechanism known as Tax Increment Financing (TIF), which in general terms, would allow the city to finance infrastructure building over the long term with potential future tax revenues. Gilbert said the Ford subway expansion plan also lacks key details. “What the Ford proposal amounts to is really quite massive,” he said. “Like Tory, there’s no analysis for the need of some of the lines.” Like Tory, he said the Ford plan, an extension of Rob Ford’s 2010 campaign calling for subways everywhere could be compared to an old term given to computer software, vapourware, which is announced with great fanfare, but never actually produced. “It’s more of a public relations strategy, but you wonder if it will actually be completed,” Gilbert said. He was less critical of Chow’s transit strategy, but in contrast to the blue sky thinking of both the Ford and Tory plans, said hers doesn’t go far enough in considering the transit network as a whole. “What she’s proposing is very good in itself, and improving bus service would help a lot. But there needs to be an emphasis also on streetcar service and subways,” he said.

The Islington Ratepayers and Residents Association will host a joint all-candidates’ meeting for wards 3, 4 and 5 Monday, Oct. 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. The meeting, which will take place at Islington United Church, 25 Burnhamthorpe Rd., will provide a forum for residents to meet their councillor candidates and hear their plans for the city and our community.
Each candidate will be allowed to make a brief presentation, and then the floor will open for a community question-and-answer period. There will then be a reception following the meeting. With no incumbents running for re-election in wards 3, 4 or 5, this event provides an important opportunity for voters to learn more about their options before casting their ballots on Election Day. The mandate of the Islington Ratepayers and Residents Association is to promote and protect the interests of residents and property owners in their catchment area – from Bloor Street West to Rathburn Road and Islington Avenue to west of Kipling Avenue. For more information, go to www.irra.ca or call 416233-7468.

How does the power of a name stack up against the political weight of a sitting trustee’s incumbency? That’s the chessboard setup in what might otherwise have been a quiet win for two-term school trustee John Hastings next month with the last-minute addition of Rob Ford’s nephew, Michael, to the ballot. Dahir Galbete, another candidate in the race, is executive director of the Somali Business Development Centre and has said, he too, has name recognition among the large Somali population in the ward. There are five other candidates in the race. But the tete-a-tete among big names Ford and Hastings, with an eye to how Galbete will fare, has become a race to watch. Last Friday, Michael, 20, became part of the Ford brothers’ last-minute political musical chairs. The Richview Collegiate graduate abruptly bowed out of the Ward 2 council race so his uncle, Mayor Rob Ford, could seek to regain the seat he held for 10 years, and instead decided to run as the ward’s public school trustee. Hastings, 72, has been Etobicoke North trustee for the Toronto District School Board since 2006, when he took 35 per cent of the vote to beat incumbent Stan Nemiroff. Voters re-elected Hastings trustee in 2010 with an even stronger showing – 44 per cent of ballots. Previously, Hastings served as Etobicoke North MPP under the Conservative Mike Harris/Ernie Eves government between 1995 and 2003. “Nothing surprises me in the life of politics,” Hastings said of Michael Ford’s candidacy Wednesday morning on a break from the hustings. “We proceed as we have. We’re bringing voters experience, innovation, determination, passion and dedication. That’s a stark and deep contrast to what the other candidates are offering.” Hastings said he has four priorities in the next trustee term. He would promote a greater emphasis on skilled trades education and a sharper focus on money management and mathematics in younger grades. He would like to create a virtual school of the arts, possibly with the assistance of DARE Arts, a charity with a history of working with north Etobicoke students
to boost confidence, courage and leadership skills through the arts. Hastings’ fourth priority would be an initiative he calls “31 in 31” in celebration of the 200th birthday on Jan. 11, 2015 of Canada’s founding prime minister Sir John A. Macdonald. “It would get kids focused more on Canada’s history,” Hastings said. “It could be any story, whether about entertainers, writers, fashion, athletes, space explorers, adventurers or inventors. A lot of stories about great Canadians have been forgotten. We’d send a montage of the work to the premier and to the prime minister.” Michael Ford is the son of Rob’s sister Kathy and Ennio Stirpe, who is serving 18 years in jail for a knife attack that blinded a woman in one eye and has already served time for manslaughter. Michael changed his last name to Ford in February. He graduated from Richview Collegiate in 2010. He attended Wilfrid Laurier University. Ford said on his facebook profile he is an account executive at Deco Labels and Tags, the Ford family business, and is studying business at Humber College. Michael Ford did not return The Guardian’s calls requesting an interview. In fact, the unknown Ford has not spoken publicly, or to the media, while running for city council. That doesn’t bode well for democracy, or perhaps, with voters, said Myer Siemiatycki, a professor in the politics and public administration department at Ryerson University. “It does not appear Michael Ford is doing a lot of campaigning. He is making no effort to talk to the media,” Siemiatycki said in a recent interview. “It’s an almost perverse effect of the name recognition factor. You could end up electing someone who is not qualified for the position.” Galbete is a father of five and former teacher who immigrated from Somalia 28 years ago, Galbete founded the Somali Business Development Centre in 2005 to provide small businesses support and information on business development. It recently relocated to the Rexdale Hub. Galbete was not available for an interview prior to Guardian deadline.

Domise says Fords forgot about north Etobicoke >>>from page 1 laid up in hospital. He held (the ward) for 10 years, and he did a good job. The Ford brand is strong. It’s a pretty solid name,” said Dr. Lorne Bozinoff, president and CEO of Forum Research, the firm that conducted the poll. Last Friday, the Fords performed political musical chairs never-before-seen in Toronto politics. Mayor Rob Ford dropped out of the mayoral race at the discovery of a tumour – the diagnosis for which was unknown at Guardian press time. He then registered to run for Ward 2, the Toronto council seat he held from 2000 to 2010. Doug Ford his campaign manager-brother and Ward 2 councillor, stepped in to run for mayor. Michael Ford, the twentysomething Ford brothers’ nephew, dropped out of the race for Ward 2 councillor. The younger Ford, with little work or political experience, had been in the race since July
“

despite having no platform, no website, having done no campaigning and not speaking with reporters. Michael Ford did not respond to The Guardian’s calls requesting an interview. Doug Ford said weeks ago his nephew would not be speaking to reporters because “he doesn’t need the media to win.” Michael Ford is now running for Ward 1 Toronto District School Board trustee against two-term incumbent trustee and former Etobicoke North MPP John Hastings. In Ward 2, the Fords are also
polling strong for mayor. The poll also showed lastminute mayoral ballot addition Doug Ford is Ward 2’s top choice for mayor, with 49 per cent of those polled saying they plan to vote for him. One-quarter said they would vote for John Tory, while 17 per cent pledged support for Olivia Chow. “If you look at those poll results, they are highly driven by who the person is voting for mayor,” Bozinoff said of the strong polling for the brothers Ford. “Andray (Domise) does well with people who will be voting for Tory and Chow. He needs to stay close to those campaigns. But it’s going to be a tough slog for him.” In a Guardian article on the Ward 2 race published less a month ago, Bozinoff said the key to Domise’s success would be to “get his name out there”. At the time, Domise had polled at 24 per cent to Michael Ford’s 43 per cent support. In total, 14 candidates are

vying for Ward 2 councillor. While Rob Ford has enjoyed historically strong support in Ward 2, Bozinoff said he does not believe a Ford win in the riding is inevitable. anything could happen “I never say never in politics. It’s a competition. But at least now we know the size of the hill,” Bozinoff said, in terms of the battle candidates face in taking on Rob Ford. Domise said his campaign had anticipated Rob Ford’s entry into the Ward 2 race. “Rob Ford running in Ward 2 is pretty much what we expected,” Domise said in an interview late Monday. “Michael Ford has not been running a serious campaign. My campaign manager has a Machiavellian mind. He said, ‘if Rob Ford is not doing well in the polls, he’ll fall back on running in his ward.’” To date, Domise’s campaign has focused on “dismantling the Ford myth that
1
he was a great councillor,” Domise said. “We believe this idea that Rob Ford has done so much for the neighbourhood, for residents, fixing potholes, cutting down trees,” Domise said. “But on transit, development, attracting businesses to locate here, he has neglected it or even suppressed it. He has no long-term vision for the ward.” Domise said he is talking with former Ford supporters who want to vote for a fresh face and perspective. “What I’m getting at the door is people saying ‘Ford has done so much at city hall, he forgot about us,’” Domise said. “He has so much time for subways in Scarborough, but transit in Rexdale is the pits. If you’re not able-bodied in Rexdale, you’re at a loss.” Domise offered one example, TTC bus route 37, which drops off riders at Queen’s Plate Drive and Rexdale Boulevard. Down the street are three churches, including
Domise’s, which have lobbied for years, he said, for a bus stop nearer their churches on Queen’s Plate. “It’s a 30- to 40-minute walk. If it’s in winter, forget it. People don’t come to church,” Domise said. “The fact you can’t get people out to church on Sunday or to a grocery store without taking two or three buses...People here have been filling in the gaps with community buses. Where is the councillor?” crowded field Also running for the Ward 2 council seat are: Munira Abukar ; Benn Adeoba; Edmund Bueno-Bradley; David Caravaggio; Ranjeet Chahal; Doug Cronkite; Mi c h e l l e Ga rc i a ; T h e o Lagakos; Luke LaRocque; Ataul Malick, Gary Paterson and George Singh. Etobicoke construction vice-president Don Frigo shot to death
Man shot while on horseback Saturday near Clinton, Ont.
A Caledon man who was vice-president of a construction company in Etobicoke and was a pioneering member of Ontario’s hunting dog community is dead after a shooting Saturday at a conservation area near Clinton, Ont. Don Frigo, 70, and his wife Eva Willer, are credited with preserving the sport of field trials for pointer
dogs, something the couple was doing the weekend Frigo was shot. “An unknown male approached the two individuals and shot the victim,” OPP Det.-Insp. Chris Avery said in a brief news conference Monday. “The female sustained minor injuries, but was able to get to a place of safety.” Huron County OPP was dispatched to Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 where they located Frigo, OPP Const. Jamie Stanley told reporters. Frigo was riding a horse, as was his wife, at the time he was shot, police said. Neil Judge remembered Frigo
on the Ontario Out of Doors online forum. “Don was a longtime, much respected Shooting Dog Owner/ Amateur Handler with many successes...” Judge wrote. “He was a true gentleman and most gracious, winning and losing...We have lost a great man.” Another poster also called Frigo a “gentleman.” “Don was a consummate gentleman, both on and off the trial grounds. His contribution to the OBDCA (Ontario Bird Dog and Conservation Association) is immeasurable. As such, his absence will be felt both on a personal and a professional level.” Police are seeking witnesses other
than Frigo’s wife, who has been interviewed, Stanley said. OPP emergency task force officers, canine units and forensic teams are investigating at the scene of the shooting. The wooded area where Frigo’s body was found is still cordoned off for investigation. Police have made no arrests and have not released a suspect description. Frigo was vice-president of Hady Construction Associates on Belfield Road in north Etobicoke. ~Torstar News Service

Police capture American fugitive in Etobicoke An American fugitive on the run since April was arrested in Etobicoke last week. Officers of the Toronto Fugitive Squad, along with those from the Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement, arrested Anthony Joseph Maiorano, 32, in The Queensway/Park Lawn Road area “without incident”
Thursday, Sept. 11, two days after he was spotted by Halton Regional Police in Oakville. Convicted of aggravated assault in the United States in 2007, Maiorano was serving a 20-year sentence at a Georgia correctional facility when he was released on a one-day permit in April, and never returned.
Police in Oakville announced Tuesday, Sept. 9 they had spotted a man they believed to be Maiorano in the passenger seat of a car, but that he evaded police capture when he fled the scene on foot. Maiorano was scheduled to appear in court Sept. 12 with regards to his extradition warrant.

It has been a year since you sold our family home. I felt it was time to again thank you and your team for the professional way in which all the details were handled. As many people know, it is a very emotional experience, but you even managed to make us laugh at times. The services you provided from day one to closing were nothing but a 10. We have known you professionally over twenty years, and knew from day one that when it was time to sell our home you would be the person for the job. Just didn't expect it to sell that quickly - 3 days! We would not hesitate to recommend you and your team, which we have, and look forward to working with you again in the future. ~Bud and Linda Farquharson

Before embarking on the house hunt, it’s important to understand what you can afford and what mortgage options are available to you. There are two basic types of mortgages offered in Canada. Conventional Mortgages are offered to those people who are paying a minimum of 20percentvalueofthehomeasdown payment towards the purchase. For those without the full 20 per cent down payment, there is the option of acquiring a High Ratio Mortgage. The minimum down payment needed for this type of mortgage is 5 per cent of the property value. When a home is financed with a High Ratio Mortgage, most lenders will require that the

buyer purchase mortgage default insurance. This type of insurance protects lenders from financial losses in the event that the homeowner defaults on their mortgage payments. With this protection, lenders have the ability to offer the same competitive interest rates as those they would offer to homebuyers with more equity. So you can take advantage of good opportunities and begin building equity in a home sooner than you think. Mortgage insurance is not to be confused with mortgage life insurance. While both provide additional peace of mind for homebuyers, mortgage life insurance provides protection only in the event of death or serious long-term disability, not default.

REXDALE REAL ESTATE
REXDALE WE’VE BEEN DISCOVERED!! Since the beginning of 2013 we’ve had contractors/renovators move into our area and buy up properties that were still very original, still had an Oil Furnace, 60 AMP electrical panels, original 1950/1960 Kitchens and Bathrooms. The contractors/renovators added new Kitchens with granite counters, new Bathrooms, re-sanded the hardwood floors or replaced them and in some, put quality basement apartments. The renovated homes SOLD for a much higher price, making them a profit. This activity has raised our prices dramatically. For the first time that I have been keeping track of Rexdale Real Estate we’ve sold a home over $1,000,000. We’re only at the beginning stages of this new phase for Rexdale. How exciting! We sold a total of 355 semi or detached properties in the first 8 months of the year. The lowest priced detached home sold for $340,000 and the highest for $1,100,000. Compare that to 2010 when the lowest priced detached home sold for $245,000 and the highest priced home sold that year was $681,000. These are significant changes in just 4 years. So far this year (2014) we sold 35 semi/detached properties between $300 - $400,000 and 212 between $400, - $500,000. 72 between $500 - $600,000. The predominate theme throughout the year has been few listings. If you’ve been thinking of selling your home NOW is the time to do so. There is very little competition and the demand for good properties is definitely there. If you have any questions give me a call, you can always reach me at 416-743-3832.
Keep Smiling!

Real estate has historically remained a sound investment, boasting a long-term appreciation rate that makes it a worthwhile investment for those who can withstand temporary setbacks in housing prices and hold on to their properties over the long haul. But investors are often nervous as they look for their first properties. Uncertainty about housing prices aside, investing in real estate also is risky, and first-time investors need to be comfortable with such risk in order to make the most of their investments. The following are a few things potential real estate investors should consider as they decide if investing in real estate is right for them.
DELUXE BUNGALOW • TRY $40K DOWN PAY $1495/ MONTH
Real estate investors typically have tenants, and those tenants inevitably have needs. Investors who have experience as contractors may not find it difficult to renovate a property and make it more attractive to tenants, nor are they likely to be inconvenienced when minor issues on the property need to be addressed. Investors with no such experience will need to hire contractors to do the work for them, cutting into potential profits down the road. In addition, investors who don’t have the ability and/or the time to address minor issues like a clogged drain or a drafty window on their own will need to hire a property management firm to tend to such needs. Such firms are effective, but also expensive, further cutting into your profits. Even those investors with contracting experience may have little or no knowledge of how the leasing process works, forcing them to rely on a real estate firm to write up leases and ensure all leases stay current. This, too, can cut into an investor’s profits. Investors who don’t bring any relevant expertise to the table can still make a profit from their real estate investments, but those profits likely won’t be as significant when outside companies must be hired to ensure the property is in good shape and all necessary documents are in order and up-to-date.
Personal ability
3 + 2 bedrooms, 2 deluxe kitchens, fabulous huge main floor family room addition. Handy man’s dream. Oversized attached 20x20 ft garage with drive-thru to tennis court sized rear yard and second garage 22x12 ft. New windows, new roof, new furnace. Airjet tub.
Time Real estate is often a time-consuming investment. Tenants pay good money to live in attractive rental properties, and those tenants will have a host of needs that must be met. Investors must be sure they have the time to address their tenants’ concerns, especially investors with no plans to hire property management firms. Potential investors who already have full plates at work and at home
may not be able to devote the time necessary to make the most of their real estate investments, and therefore might be better off finding another way to invest their money. Time also must be considered when considering profits. Real estate is not the type of investment that turns a profit overnight. Even investors who are looking to invest in an up-and-coming neighborhood must be prepared to hold onto their properties for at least a few years, if not much longer, to maximize their investments. Though real estate is a sound investment, it is not a get rich quick type of investment, so investors looking to make a quick buck should consider alternatives before buying investment properties.
Size First-time real estate investors might be wise to choose a smaller property for their initial investment. Larger properties can be overwhelming to manage, and investors often rely on property management firms to tend to these properties. Such firms charge more to manage bigger properties, which can eat into investors’ finances. Veteran investors can handle such overhead costs, but first-timers might find themselves caught off guard upon realizing the gravity of their financial commitment. A good rule of thumb for first-time investors is to stick to smaller properties, only moving on to larger buildings once they are fully comfortable with all that comes with investing in real estate.
Costs The cost of a real estate investment goes beyond the purchase price of the home. In addition to the mortgage on the property, investors must pay the taxes and insurance on the property, as well as any costs associated with maintaining and managing the property. Certain tax breaks are available to real estate investors depending on where they live. For example, in the United States, taxes on the profits when a property is sold may be deferred if those profits are immediately rolled into another property (such a deferment is only available to those investors who arrange this exchange prior to selling the initial property). Potential investors need to consider all of these costs, and might want to hire a real estate lawyer to help them make the most of their investments and any profits they yield. But even hiring an attorney is an additional cost investors must consider before investing.

s difficult as it is to imagine today, the main intersection of the village of Richview was once located at Third Line (now Hwy. 427) and Richview Side Road (now Eglinton Avenue West). In 1818, William Knaggs of Yorkshire, England, purchased a 100-acre lot in the southwest corner of this intersection and farmed there until his death in 1859. Knaggs also built a blacksmith shop on the northeast corner of his property and leased it to fellow Yorkshireman, Christopher “Kit” Thirkle, from about 1850 to 1887. As a result, many locals called this village’s main intersection “Kit’s Corners”. In 1 8 5 3 , a g r o u p o f Richview residents joined together to purchase a small property just south of Kit’s blacksmith shop, and they built a “Union Chapel” where non-denominational church services were held. A cemetery developed just south of the chapel. In 1886, the chapel’s trustees decided to build
denise harris history corner a larger church of red brick south of the cemetery. This new church opened in 1888 and was named Richview Methodist Church. Kit Thirkle’s son, James (1850-1918,) farmed south and west of the church on land initially leased and later purchased from Knagg’s estate. James’ son – also named James but called “Jimmy” – farmed this property as well. The Thirkles were well known for their horse breeding skill, and Jimmy won prizes at local agricultural fairs for his highquality oats every year until his death in 1955. many shops Over the years, this busy Richview intersection also housed a butcher shop, general store, greenhouse, carpenter, turkey restaurant, candy maker and Richview post office. Richview Methodist Church (a United
Church after 1925) was demolished in 1960 when the Hwys. 427/401 interchange was built, and, in 1962, the congregation moved into a new church building a short distance away on Wellesworth Drive. In this photo taken in the 1920s, you can see Jimmy Thirkle on the left with a hired hand on the right ploughing with two pairs of draught horses. Behind them sits Richview Methodist Church, half hidden by a row of evergreen trees. What can’t be seen in the photo is Richview Cemetery behind the church. This cemetery has miraculously survived, and still provides a pleasant surprise to today’s passersby when they catch a glimpse of it while zooming past on the ramp from Hwy. 427 northbound to Hwy. 401 westbound. Famous PEOPLE Players honours longtime supporter Jim Flaherty with special luncheon CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com
Etobicoke’s Famous PEOPLE Players (FPP) will pay tribute next month to the man without whom the renowned, black-light puppetry theatre company would have no home to celebrate – the late Jim Flaherty. Remembering Jim Flaherty – a special luncheon presentation featuring a gourmet menu courtesy of Celebrity Chef Christopher Woods and performance of FPP’s 1950s-themed Twist and Shout show – takes place at noon Oct. 7 at FPP’s Dine and Dream Theatre, 343 Evans Ave. FPP Founder and President Diane Dupuy called the former finance minister, who died suddenly of a heart attack at age 64 in April, a “very special man” and ardent supporter of her organization and its dedication to helping those with developmental challenges. “We want to remember Jim

Unfortunately, he’s not here to get his, so we’re having this remembrance in his honour,” Dupuy said of Flaherty, who she said played an integral role in helping secure government funding toward
FPP’s Etobicoke home. “I really liked him. He was a very compassionate man and he always listened.” It was in June 2009 that she learned first-hand just how great a listener Flaherty really was. At the time, Dupuy and her FPP theatre company were getting ready to move
from its home on Lisgar Street to new warehouse digs in need of major renovations in Etobicoke. But after getting hit with an unexpected development fee of nearly $200,000 from the city shortly after buying the warehouse space, Dupuy said FPP’s budget was blown and she was at a loss for what to do to save the theatre company. Enter Flaherty to the rescue via a surprise phone call offering government assistance – nearly $600,000 in Cultural Infrastructure funding that would prove FPP’s salvation. “I was so grateful and so shocked, but that’s just the kind of man he was,” Dupuy said of Flaherty, whose son John, like many of FPP performers, has a learning disability. Dupuy said she’s hopeful Flaherty’s whole family, including wife Christine Elliott and sons John, Galen and Quinn will attend the Oct. 7 tribute.

Tory to announce city bike plan DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com John Tory will be releasing a bike plan that will include bike infrastructure at transit stations and an “achievable, measurable” plan to build separated bike lanes. “It will focus first of all on maintaining and providing a line item to make sure that cycle lanes are properly maintained,” said Tory in front of
reporters Tuesday morning. “Second will be to have greater bicycle infrastructure at transit stations including the Smart Track Stations... thirdly, I will make a reasonable, achievable, measurable commitment to have more separated bike lanes and a network of real separated bike lanes...” Tory made the comments standing between construction fences that are block-
ing off much of Wellesley Street between Yonge Street and Queen’s Park Circle. He called the news conference to re-iterate promises he had made earlier in the campaign, to personally oversee a committee that would work to mitigate inconvenience from road work. Tory had no new policies to announce at the event, but said details would be available in the coming days.

Competitors hit podium at senior summer games
The provincial champion Bloordale Bombers team includes Johnny Banks, Evan Carabetta, Dominic Chiera, Marco Da Gama, Matthew Elbe, Aidan Frost, Robbie Howard, Matthew Lee, Tristan O’Quinn, Nathan Plantinga, Joseph Russell and Jordan Sfyndilis. Coaches/Staff: Al Banks, Vince Carabetta, Andrew Frost, Dong Lee, Wendy Kudeba and Patrick McConnell.
Bloordale Bombers win provincial title The Bloordale Bombers capped off a championship season winning the Select Ontario Baseball Association provincial championship in the rookie ball age division over the Labour Day weekend in Richmond Hill.
Bloordale won the championship game 9-8 over the North Toronto A’s in dramatic fashion in their last at bat, avenging an earlier 11-4 defeat. Both teams made their way to the championship game with only
one loss and four wins in the double knockout format. Bloordale’s four wins were 14-3 over Cambridge Bulldogs, 25-10 over the Clarington Colts and two wins over Leaside Red – 20-13 and 8-0.
Three Etobicoke competitors came home 2014 Ontario 55+ Summer Games’ champions. Husband and wife team James and Marie Greig took the gold in open doubles euchre, while Joan Biggs scored a gold-medal win in Nordic women’s one-kilometre walking. Etobicoke competitors also took bronze in three sports: five-pin bowling, tennis and walking. This year’s games drew more than 1,400 athletes aged 55-plus to compete in 18 sports from Aug. 19-21 in Amherstburg. “We were very astonished and excited about winning this gold medal,” Marie Greig said. The euchre-champion couple has played the game for more than 50 years. The 2014 Ontario 55+ Summer Games included: bid euchre, bocce, carpet bowling, contract bridge, cribbage, cycling, darts, euchre, floor shuffleboard, golf, horseshoes, lawn bowling, pickleball, slo-pitch, swimming, tennis, walking and five-pin bowling.
Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. In 2003, at their first provincial tournament, the Greigs won silver in open doubles euchre at the Games at University of Western Ontario. They’ve participated in provincial tournaments ever since. To participate in the games, competitors must first participate in a qualifying tournament run out of various community centres across Ontario, Marie Greig said. Greig expressed thanks to the Ontario Summer Games Association, Ward Funeral Home for its sponsorship, Robert Bogaert, for organizing the qualifying games, and the Pelmo Community Centre. Michael Twitchin took bronze in single men’s 55+ five-pin bowling. Vaughan Grater and Isidro Ambrelez won bronze in 65+ men’s doubles tennis. Brian Peoples and Hazel Peoples took the bronze in 65+ mixed doubles tennis. Patrick Groulx won a bronze in Nordic men’s 1km walking.
