PROCESSIONAL HYMN

#102, Once In Royal David’s City, v. v. 2, 4, 5, 6 Phillip Merlino, soloist

Once in royal David’s city stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

He came down to earth from heaven, who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; With the poor, the scorned, the lowly, lived on earth our Savior holy. For he is our lifelong pattern; daily, when on earth he grew, He was tempted, scorned, rejected, tears and smiles like us he knew. Thus he feels for all our sadness, and he shares in all our gladness.

Please be seated. The congregation will remain seated for the singing of the Pageant hymns.

And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love; For that child who seemed so helpless is our Lord in heaven above; And he leads his children on to the place where he is gone. Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing round, We shall see him; but in heaven, where his saints his throne surround: Christ, revealed to faithful eye, set at God’s right hand on high.

#79, O Little Town of Bethlehem, v. v. 1, 5

3

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by; Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!

HYMN

#101, Away In A Manger, v. v. 1, 2

Away in a manger, no crib for his bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, And stay by my side until morning is nigh.

HYMN

#89, It Came Upon The Midnight Clear, v. v. 1, 2

It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: “Peace on the earth, good will to men, from heaven’s all gracious King.” The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled, And still their heavenly music floats o’er all the weary world; Above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing, And ever o’er its Babel sounds the blessed angels sing.

HYMN #96, Gloria, v. v. 1, 2

Angels we have heard on high, singing sweetly through the night, 4

And the mountains in reply echoing their brave delight. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why these songs of happy cheer? What great brightness did you see? What glad tidings did you hear? Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo.

HYMN

#109, The First Nowell, v. v. 1, 2

The first Nowell the angel did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields as they lay, keeping their sheep, On a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel. They looked up and saw a star shining in the east beyond them far, And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel.

HYMN

#128, We Three Kings, v. v. 1-4

We three kings of Orient are, bearing gifts we traverse afar, Field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star. O star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright; Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light! Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain, gold I bring to crown him again, King for ever, ceasing never over us all to reign. O star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright; Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light! Frankincense to offer have I: incense owns a Deity nigh; Prayer and praising, gladly raising, worship him, God Most High. O star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright; Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light! 5

Please stand for the Peace. The symbolizes our intent to forgive as we are forgiven, to live in peace— shalom, harmony— with all persons, and it is a sign of the Holy Spirit’s presence in the church. During the Peace the children will sit with their parents. Their costumes will need to be returned to Sillers Hall following the service. The offertory sentence reminds us that our offerings are our response to God’s care and nurture Please stand.

Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom; Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in the stone cold tomb. O star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright; Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light!

#83, O Come, All Ye Faithful, v.

v. 1, 3, 5

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come, and behold him, born the King of angels; O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord. Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above; Glory to God, glory in the highest; O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, 6

O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord.

Please remain standing. The Sursum Corda (Lift up your hearts) is a form of introduction to prayer handed down over the Centuries. This dialogue is the invitation to the people to join in the Eucharistic offering, to raise minds and hearts to “things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God”

The Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy) exemplifies that the Eucharist is the action of the whole Church, even of the whole creation, by sharing the song of the angels and the company of heaven (Isaiah 6:1-3, Psalm 118:25-26, Revelation 4:8). The people stand or kneel. Those who stand do so in recognition of having been made worthy to stand before God through confession, absolution, and the sacrifice of Jesus. (Mark 11:25) Those who kneel do so in the presence of God,

Child, for us sinners poor and in the manger, We would embrace thee, with love and awe; Who would not love thee, loving us so dearly? O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Celebrant People Celebrant People Celebrant People

Eucharistic Prayer B

The Lord be with you. ►And also with you. Lift up your hearts. ►We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. ►It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Then the Celebrant proceeds

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because you gave Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be born for us; who, by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, was made perfect Man of the flesh of the Virgin Mary his mother; so that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become your children. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Celebrant and People

►Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

Sanctus S-125

Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

The Celebrant continues

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us 7

whose work of salvation is summarized in the Eucharistic prayer. (Acts 9:40)

The Institution Narrative recalls the particular mighty act that is the focus of the service: the gift of Christ’s body and blood to be our spiritual food and drink (1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Matthew 26:26-28, Mark 14:22-24, Luke 22:19-20). We ask that the Holy Spirit sanctify (bless or make holy) the bread and wine and also us who are to receive the sacrament of Christ’s body and blood. Because it gives our assent (“So be it”) to all the Eucharistic Prayer, the people’s response is called the Great Amen. If you wish to receive the body of Christ please come to the altar and hold out your hand to take the wafer. You may eat the bread immediately, or you may wait and receive it with the wine. If you wish to receive blood of Christ from the chalice please assist the chalice to your lips for a sip of wine, or you may leave the wafer in your hand and the

in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father, Celebrant and People

►We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; The Celebrant continues

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Celebrant and People

►AMEN And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, People and Celebrant

8

Eucharistic Minister will dip it in the wine for you.

If you wish to receive the bread only, please know it is the historic position of the Church that receiving one or both of the elements is sufficient to complete communion. If you do not wish

to take the bread and wine, you are invited to come to the altar and receive a blessing. Indicate this by folding your arms over your chest and placing your hands near your shoulders.

►Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD Celebrant People

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; ►Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

The Celebrant says the following Invitation

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

COMMUNION HYMN

#115, What Child Is This?, v. v. 1, 2

What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping? 9

Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary. Why lies he in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christian, fear: for sinners here the silent Word is pleading. This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary.

Please kneel for the post communion prayer.

After Communion, the Celebrant says

Let us pray.

Silence Celebrant and People

The congregation remains kneeling for the singing of the Post Communion hymn.

► Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

POST COMMUNION HYMN

#111, Silent Night

Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child. Holy infant, so tender and mild, sleep in heavenly peace. Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night, shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing alleluia; Christ, the Savior, is born! Christ, the Savior, is born! Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth. Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

RECESSIONAL HYMN

#87, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Hark! The herald angels sing glory to the newborn King! Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled! Joyful, all ye nations, rise, join the triumph of the skies; With the angelic host proclaim Christ is born in Bethlehem! Hark! The herald angels sing glory to the newborn King! Christ, by highest heaven adored; Christ, the everlasting Lord; Late in time behold him come, offspring of the Virgin’s womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; hail the incarnate Deity. Pleased as man with us to dwell; Jesus, our Emmanuel! Hark! The herald angels sing glory to the newborn King!

The dismissal asserts the relationship between worship and living. It is a call to mission, a call to live the baptismal and Eucharistic life in the world.

Mild he lays his glory by, born that we no more may die, Born to raise us from the earth, born to give us second birth. Risen with healing in his wings, light and life to all he brings, Hail, the Sun of righteousness! Hail, the heaven born Prince of Peace! Hark! The herald angels sing glory to the newborn King.

THE DISMISSAL Celebrant People

Let us go forth in the name of Christ. Alleluia. Alleluia. ►Thanks be to God. Alleluia. Alleluia.
