The National Quality Center (NQC) and the HIV/AIDS Bureau recognizes the outstanding work of Ryan White grantees and consumers that have shown exemplary performance or leadership in some aspect of quality management. NQC acknowledges excellence and aims to promote these quality champions to further spread quality improvement. Evergreen’s very own Dawn Trotter, Retention Support Assistant, was awarded the 2017 NQC Award for Consumer Engagement in Quality Improvement. Brian Kempf, Julie Vaughan and Andy Kiener are pleased to have nominated Dawn for all she contributes to Team Evergreen. Congratulations Dawn! And Congratulations as well to Liza Pereira, Retention Support Assistant, shown here at the Creative Mornings Buffalo event where she was the keynote speaker. - Andy Kiener

The vast majority of custodial issues are taken care of by our Facilities team, but there are a few things everyone is responsible for. This will be especially important as Evergreen continues to expand. Two areas of focus are personal desk space and communal break/kitchen areas. | An American Dietetic Association survey concluded that 83 percent of American office workers eat at their desk regularly. Unfortunately, only 36 percent of those polled clean their desk and computer area on a weekly basis. Staggeringly, 64 percent said they clean only on a monthly basis or less. This can greatly increase the risk of contracting a foodborne illness. A study conducted at the University of Arizona found that desktops contain one-hundred times more bacteria than a kitchen table and four-hundred times more than a toilet seat! While our team will do some cleaning of work surfaces, it would be great if everyone would keep their desk areas neat and clean. Let us know if you need cleaning supplies! | Another area that is often overlooked is kitchens and break spaces. While some areas have reusable cutlery and dishes, our custodial team is not responsible for maintaining them after use. Some areas are provided with a dishwasher, which can be used on an as needed basis. Otherwise we ask that you take care of any dishes in a timely manner. The custodial team is also not responsible for maintaining

the interior of any common area refrigerators. The recommended temperature is forty degrees Fahrenheit, or below, for the refrigerator portion, and zero for the freezer. If you’re aware of any perishable food that has been in the refrigerator for over a week, check with your co-workers and remove it if necessary. Should a buildup of leftovers occur, supervisors of the area are encouraged to develop a schedule for routine removal and cleaning of the refrigerator as a shared responsibility. Any liquids should be emptied into sinks and then rinsed down the drain. When this is done, please alert Facilities with a ticket beforehand so that we can be sure to remove all the additional refuse before the end of that day. We will be adding a refrigerator to the new Staff Lounge that is open to all staff, along with a paper towel dispenser and cleaning supplies. While our team will handle major floor cleaning we ask that staff treat it as any other kitchen space. Important to note as well, any refrigerators that are used for testing or medical supplies should never be used to store food or drink of any kind and vice versa. | If we follow these simple guidelines we should be able to limit our exposure to harmful bacteria and promote healthy behaviors that benefit the wellness of all staff. As always, please do your best to mention these discussion topics in your center meetings. Connections
