IF the photo of this month's Connections Profile subject, Kristy Mangel, is a bit blurry, don't blame the photographer. Kristy isn't used to standing still for very long. Kristy is the Project Assistant for Evergreen's Marketing & Communications team. She also covers the duties for the currently vacant Project Manager position, meaning her photos will have some blur.
Kristy's role is to assist in initiating and carrying forth these conversations and all steps of the
"You might know me by name," said Kristy. "I'm usually the first person people from other departments will speak with when considering a new marketing or communications project for their area." Kristy is the initial respondent to almost all of the agency’s marketing tickets and requests. She works with staff from throughout the agency to build a timeline for the project and gather all of the elements needed to have a successful launch of a new service or event.
"A day-in-the-life might have me taking a Zoom meeting with folks to talk about a new program they’re developing and how we can best assist them in getting the word out, then meeting a photographer at one of our locations for a portrait session with a new provider, then uploading rise screens announcing the visit of a cute therapy dog that week, then packing up a couple of “swag” boxes for that weekend’s music festival where the agency will be providing information about its services, then finishing the day helping set up an on-site event."
"When you and I are done chatting about your upcoming initiative," said Kristy, "I confer with my project team, consisting of a digital marketing strategist, an internal communications manager, a copywriter, and two designers. From here, your team and mine will work together to bring your vision to reality, producing marketing and communications plans and all of the elements needed for inperson outreach events, new service initiatives and more."
As with many other Evergreen employees, there's no such thing as a typical work day for Kristy.
Before any of these things can happen, Kristy notes that there is a lot of communication and collaborative work between the team members of the Marketing & Communications department and the departments launching these initiatives. "We brainstorm together, review the look and feel of materials as they’re being created, align new initiatives to fit the tone and vibe of the Evergreen Health voice and together develop the message that is ultimately shared to our patients and community."
In one of her “past lives” Kristy was the unofficial documentarian of the underground Chicago comedy scene. "I lived there for 11 years, and I continued doing so with the Buffalo comedy scene after moving back home in 2012." She started and produced a weekly show for two years at Milkies on Elmwood. "It's still going strong eight years later!"
development process until the final t is crossed and i is dotted. "And I love it! No two days are the same, and there are often several initiatives and events happening concurrently, so there are a lot of threads of information to keep from getting tangled. Luckily I'm an organizational nerd and love producing reality from mere vision, so this role is a perfect fit for me."
Kristy is a big fan of the Team Evergreen vibe. "The culture and people of Evergreen are incredible, and although there have been a lot of changes for the agency in the last few years, working at a healthcare agency during a global pandemic has been an incredible experience – our continuing work in the community even in the face of such uncertainty and tragedy, with a sole focus on our mission and our patient population, was truly humbling and I am so grateful to have been with Evergreen Health during that time.I am looking forward to seeing the rest of this year unfold and am so happy to be a part of the tremendous work of Evergreen Health, Community Access Services and the Pride Center." We're so glad you are with us, Kristy. Now stand still so we can take your photo!
She also founded and managed an online zine called Qween City (qweencity.com) for five years that profiled the lives and work of more than 100 people in Buffalo and Western New York. "I worked with a team of more than 10 people to develop content, share information within the community and advocate for a myriad of causes. The project currently sits in stasis due to both the pandemic and the majority of my staff up and having babies on me (so precious!), but I do miss the creative outlet and look forward to hopefully bringing it back into the fray sometime soon, perhaps with a new vibe and mission it’s good to stay fresh!"
"Speaking of", she continued, "I can thank Qween City for my introduction to Evergreen Health. It was in 2017 that we first came on board as Dining Out For Life media ambassadors, then continued the relationship as DOFL media spokespeople right up until last year. I fell in love with the mission of Evergreen Health through my DOFL work with them, and officially “joined the team” in 2019."
Team Evergreen was out in full force and ready to march for the 20th annual Puerto Rican and Hispanic Day parade in downtown Buffalo. Great job, Team Evergreen... you looked and sounded fantastic!
CAS held its annual Backpack Giveaway event, distributing more than 300 backpacks to students in the community. There was also food, ice cream and fun activities.

This year's Harm Reduction Conference was the best yet! The two-day conference featured keynote speeches from Dr. Mary Bassett (New York State Commissioner of Health), Maia Szalavitz (reporter and author) and Dr. Chinazo Cunningham (OASAS Commissioner), as well as breakout sessions on a variety of topics. The event closed with a panel discussion with members of Evergreen's Drug User Health Coalition.
