nnections Question
How did you get your start at Evergreen? How long have you been here? I started in September 2004, the same week I closed on my first house. A very stressful week! Good stress though. I found out about the position through Joanne Ramos (Service Coordinator), who was my supervisor before she left for Florida a month later! I faxed my resume one day, was called and interviewed, and hired within days. I put in my two week notice right then and there. What do you do in the Southern Tier office? I think I am a Jack-of-all-Trades here. Of course I do all the typical Administrative Assistant duties, but I also kind of oversee our pantry and I also may occasionally transport a client to an appointment if necessary. I feel fortunate that, because our office is small, I am able to get to know our clients. This allows me to be able to ask about someone’s new baby, or another’s vacation, or how a surgery went. We all need that kind of personal attention, don’t we? Tell us a bit about your life. Well, the most wonderfully life changing thing happened a few years ago. I became a new mom of a 5 year old! She is the best thing I never knew I needed! It was something my boyfriend and I certainly never expected, but I am so blessed that he has stepped up the plate and has become a great dad. I am the youngest of five siblings, and none of us had children, so you can imagine the love and attention Olivia receives. She has changed our whole family. We are a somewhat unconventional little family unit, and it’s great! How did you become the mom of a 5 year old? I worked with Olivia’s mom years ago when I was a Big Brother Big Sister Case Worker. We lost touch after I came to Evergreen (then ACS). She was a wonderful free spirit, who found herself pregnant at 40+. When Olivia was three years old, her mom unexpectedly passed away. Her father became Olivia’s caretaker. I was only vaguely acquainted with him, but apparently Olivia’s mom had spoken very highly of me to him. So in 2009 when Olivia was just four years old and he was diagnosed with cancer, I began having visits with Olivia to provide respite and her father asked me to be Olivia’s guardian. We never dreamed his prognosis was so dire... we both thought it would be years before she came in to my custody. Unfortunately, he passed away that year. We worked very hard to make the transition as natural as possible, and she adjusted very well. Not to say it’s all been smooth sailing, but what she has brought to our lives has been immeasurable. When people hear her story, they tell me “she is so lucky to have you”, but we are most definitely the lucky ones. She is funny and kind and clever… we have good laughs every day. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be going to ballet lessons or soccer games or parent/ teacher meetings at 51 years old, but I love it. How do you unwind and have fun? My favorite thing to do is to spend a beautiful sunny day at Barcelona Beach on Lake Erie, the best de-stressor EVER. We also like to tent camp, and we took Olivia on her first camping trip last summer to the Adirondacks. Swimming, canoeing, and ice cream every day, it was heaven. Tim and I like to putter in the yard too. What have you seen as the biggest change(s) within the agency over the years? Just look at the phone directory! We’ve grown so much in the years since I have been here. Lots of new faces each time I come up to Buffalo. Is there a lot of repetition to your job? What keeps you interested/motivated in your position? Like I mentioned before, our office is small, and we are most definitely a team. When someone is out on vacation or medical leave, we automatically take up the slack for each other. It is something that just happens naturally. We all seem to be aware of what is going on with each other’s clients and can just step in when needed. I think that’s what keeps me interested.
