About the Pride Center

The Pride Center of Western New York, Inc. Senior Director: Jorien L. Brock, JD, MSW Program Coordinator: Damian Martinez Outreach Coordinator: Sally Heron, MSW Outreach Specialist: Susanna Cardoso Outreach Specialist: Bennett Everett, Jr. Administrative Assistant: Diana Patton 206 South Elmwood Avenue Buffalo, New York 14201 716-852-PRIDE (7743) www.PrideCenterWNY.org

The Pride Center of Western New York, Inc. is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization. The Pride Center of Western New York, Inc. was founded in 1998 by a group of individuals and business owners concerned by challenges facing the LGBT communities in all eight counties of Western New York (WNY). The Center incorporated in 2001 and received its first funding for staff and programming from the New York State Department of Health in 2002. In 2007, the Pride Center received funding from the David Bohnett Foundation to establish a regional cyber center targeting young LGBT adults who need access to and use of the internet in a safe setting. In 2010, the Pride Center became the organizers of the Annual Pride Weekend Parades & Festivals. Our new on-site lending library was added in 2011, and we received funding from Department of Health AIDS Institute for our Transgender Health Initiative. In addition to our grant funding, we are dependent on the generous support of individuals, businesses, community groups, and people like you. Thank you for your interest and on-going support. For more information beyond this Resource and Pride Guide, please check us out on our website at www.PrideCenterWNY.org, on Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. The mission of the Pride Center is to work with the community to make Western New York a safe, healthy, and satisfying place for LGBT people to live, work, and establish their families. The Pride Center makes no claims and does not endorse the organizations listed in the Guide or the advertisements, and we do not endorse the views they express or the products/services they offer. The Pride Center does not guarantee the accuracy, relevance, timeliness, or completeness of information contained in the listings or advertisements.

THIS YEAR’S PRIDE THEME IS ”TRANSFORMAT ION” Welcome! This past year has been a time of Transformation with change and growth happening on many levels. We have experienced Transformation in our legislation, in our communities, in our identities, and in ourselves. We have had legal successes with achievements such as the passage of Marriage Equality and the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

Saturday, June 2, 2012

Dyke March and Allen Street Festival Line up at 4:00 p.m. at Kleinhans, step off at 5:00 p.m. east on North Street to Elmwood Avenue, South on Elmwood Avenue to Allen Street, east on Allen Street to Franklin Street, ending at the Allen Street Festival. We are continuing our tradition with the big party at the Allen Street Festival from 5:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. The Street Festival will feature food, drinks, and a much expanded selection of live local music and D.J. performances. NEW THIS YEAR: Local Art Installation, Food Trucks, Kids Zone, Teen Space, and Carnival Games. A $2 donation will be gladly accepted at the festival entrance gate with all proceeds to benefit the Pride Center of WNY. Sales from this year’s 21 & Up Beer & Wine area will also go to support the Pride Center of WNY. Come and join the party!

The Pride Center experienced growth with unprecedented funding to work with people in the transgender and gender queer communities to improve access to testing, education, and treatment of HIV, STIs, and Hepatitis C in WNY. As a community, we have also felt the changes forced with great loss, and we pay tribute to those who have passed with our In Memoriam section. Even from loss, we find seeds of hope and change with greater recognition of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender realities; increased time and resources being devoted to changing the behaviors such as bullying that wound one another; and we find strength to continue the fight where those who came before us left off. From the roots of marginalization, evolve new opportunities for health and equality. There are many areas where we continue to work for Transformation. People are joining together to work for the passage of the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) to expand equal rights and working to create safe affordable hous-
