EDITOR’S LETTER

T

he arrival of October represents the official kick-off of the most festive time of the year, the Holiday/Fall season. As we all start decorating our front yards, patios and windows with lights and ornaments I believe we all have one common thought in our minds, that the year of 2020 with all its challenges it’s finally coming to an end. I genuinely hope that this holiday season brings some peace to all of our lives as we wrap this difficult year. Let’s talk about our October cover. We have Ekim Kaya this month among our Evolvers. He is the Tai Lopez of Turkey, an ambitious entrepreneur based in New York. We conducted an interview with him for our October issue. He shared his journey with us and what he has accomplished with his hard work and conviction. As he also gets attention with his fashion sense and lifestyle, I asked him for a few brands and items he likes. You can read the full interview on page 32. In the wellbeing and self-development sections, our authors continue to help us evolve by sharing their expertise in their fields and their unique insights. We get tips on a stress-free life from award-winning stress relief expert and author Susie Mantell. Along that line, Libby Pecheur highlights our need for community care while Jackie Gaines, author of Wearing the Yellow Suit: A Guide for Women in Leadership gives us tips to find a work/life balance. As part of her “7 Ways to Set Yourself Up for Success” series, Gokce Gizer invites you on a journey to reflect on your past so you can thrive in the future. Lastly, I want to ask you what this fall season represents for you? The end of 2020 (finally)? The beginning of the holiday season?

FOOD.

Whether you’re hosting a houseful of guests or simply keeping your family’s hunger at bay before dinner, appetizers can be a home chef’s best friend. Simple options like dips allow for personalization while keeping cook time to a minimum. The next time you’re looking for a quick fix, consider this Caramelized Sweet Onion Hummus recipe that’s ideal for pairing with pita bread, veggies, or crackers. With the layered flavor, color, and texture of onions serving as a key ingredient, it’s a nutritious substitute for less health-conscious appetizers and snacks. In fact, onions can be called nature’s ninja because of their many “skills.” Onions add abundant flavor to a wide variety of foods with just 45 calories per serving as a source of dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin B6, potassium, and other key nutrients such as folate, calcium, and iron. They are also rich in heart-healthy nutrients and have been shown to help prevent some cancers.

CARAMELIZED SWEET ONION HUMMUS Recipe courtesy of the National Onion Association 1 whole garlic head 4 tablespoons, plus 1 teaspoon, extra-virgin olive oil, divided 1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced 1 can (15 ounces) chickpeas 1 tablespoon lemon juice (about 1/2 lemon) 1/2 cup tahini (toasted ground sesame seeds) 1 teaspoon salt Heat oven to 350 F. Cut the top of the garlic head off and place cut-side down on pan; drizzle with 1 teaspoon olive oil. Bake 20-30 minutes, or until garlic is soft. Once cool, squeeze garlic from each clove. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook onion in 1 tablespoon olive oil. Stir onion frequently until slices begin to brown. Reduce heat to low and continue cooking until onions are soft and reach medium brown color. Rinse and drain chickpeas; reserve 3 tablespoons liquid. In a food processor, blend chickpeas, reserved liquid, lemon juice, tahini, garlic, salt, remaining olive oil, and onions until combined and smooth. Serve with pita bread, veggies, or crackers.

HELP YOURSELF TO HEALTHIER HUMMUS

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF WITH OLIVE OILS FROM SPAIN FOOD.

Tuesday, September 29 is World Heart Day: created to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease and its consequences. What many may not know is that maintaining a healthy and balanced diet is the main risk mitigator of the disease and its ailments. Furthermore, nutritionists and doctors advise that olive oils should be the fat contribution within that healthy diet. This is due to the fact that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined there is credible evidence to support that the consumption of oleic acid, the principal component in olive oils, in place of saturated fats such as butter and coconut oil can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular ailments. An assertion that has been supported by numerous investigations is, “We have been able to verify that consuming 40 ml (about 2.5 spoonful’s) a day of extra virgin olive oil, within

a Mediterranean diet, can reduce vascular complications by more than 30%,” said Ramón Estruch, coordinator of the PREDIMED Study, the most influential investigation in the world about food and health. This multicenter trial (conducted in Spain between 2003-2010) analyzed the effects on our health from the consumption of a Mediterranean diet rich in extra virgin olive oil. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has shone a spotlight on our individual responsibilities – for our own health and for the vulnerable in society, as taking care of our hearts is more important than ever. This World Heart Day, and every other day of the year, do your heart a favor by incorporating Olive Oil from Spain into your lifestyle. For more information, please visit oliveoilworldtour.com.

DESENIO REVEAL EMERGING ART TRENDS FOR AUTUMN 2020 20 T H E E V O LV E M A G O C T O B E R 2 0 2 0

Scandinavian interior company Desenio has curated a wall art trend report for the approaching season. Incorporating their new product lines, it features a playful array of shades and mix of art styles, including this year’s hottest color: brown. 21 T H E E V O LV E M A G O C T O B E R 2 0 2 0

BROWN ECLECTIC

MODERN HERITAGE

After a decade of cool greys and bright whites, this is the age where warmth is let back into homes. Soft yet elegant, the brown shades that are trending this season are an ode to the 70s, translated into a modern aesthetic.

The understated luxury of the English countryside can be introduced to the home this autumn with rich color palettes, rustic details, and moody green fields from a rural idyll where elegance meets practicality.

Get the look

Get the look:

Tone-on-tone layering. Lighter sandy shades blend well with richer chestnuts and chocolates, or a bit of spice can be added with ochre. Layering tone-on-tone, with art prints that feature the same colors in different saturations, creates a unique look. Create a home art gallery. Abstract styles in shades of brown and beige mixed with photo art can make a gallery more personal. Let the art take centre stage. Think about the framing. Natural wooden frames throughout with gold frames to add some luxury. Black frames create contrast and look great with black-and-white photo art. For a softer feel where art is the focal point, a natural wooden frame is recommended by Desenio.

Bring nature in. Deep green forests, rolling hills and moody skies are all characteristics of the countryside. This autumn Desenio is launching many art prints that allow customers to bring stunning nature views and romantic florals to walls. Patterns with history. One of the best-known wallpaper designers, dating back to the 1850s, was William Morris, whose influence on the industry lasts to this day. Instead of covering homes, floor-to-ceiling in pattern added art prints can achieve the look. Make space for colour. A home office or living room are both great spaces to explore this trend, adding elements such as art, fabrics and deeper colous to create a warm and welcoming feeling this trend is all about.

DARK DRAMA A new spin on minimalism, Dark Drama turns ideas of what a calm and peaceful home looks like an upside-down, using whites as accents to complement darker base colours.

Get the look:

to space. Gold can be incorporated with art print frames or home accessories. Monochrome art. Simply choose black and white art. Desenio has released new abstract styles in darker tints and with gold foil stamping.

ART LIFE

Go big! Decorators can opt for a large gallery wall acting as the focal point of the room, a big statement poster, or place two larger prints next to each other for an elegant look.

Artsy and full of colour, Art Life features a rainbow palette of bright and bold colours to choose from. Either one colour can be an accent or a mix can be embraced.

A touch of luxe. A dark room looks great with gold details, adding a luxurious touch

Colorful art. This bold colour trend is reflected in Desenio’s autumn art drop

Get the look:

with prints featuring bright yellows, reds, greens and oranges. A quirky mix of art prints brings tons of personality to homes. Explore personal style. This trend is all about letting an individual’s personality shine when choosing art picks. Walls should be thought of like an art exhibition - playful and unique art prints set the tone. Create a perfect pair. Selecting two art prints similar in tone or contrasting, and pairing them together can add interest to a sideboard or in a hallway, creating a focal point in the room.

INTERIOR DESIGN MEETS PARROT TREE PERCH DESIGN.

As discerning parrot owners and lovers know, living with a parrot is both an art and an adventure. To enrich the lives of people and parrots alike, Arcametti has released its exclusive line of luxury tree stand perches, available in multiple sizes and designs, which have earned the highest acclaim from connoisseurs and avian experts worldwide. “At long last, parrot owners have an innovative option for enhancing the beauty of their homes while giving their favorite pet the opportunity to expand their environment beyond the cage,” said Anna Leong, president of Arcametti. “While reinforcing the bond between person and parrot, owners can enjoy a genuine showpiece and artistic statement for the ages, something that could be exhibited in any art gallery.”

24

Arcametti’s one-of-a-kind tree stand perches, which range in price from $2,500 to $10,000, are informed by the designers’ passion for animals, nature, art, and architecture. Each work features aged coffea robusta trees individually selected for their personality and aesthetic; the trees are found in challenging terrain, resulting in a wild, weathered, and windswept look and feel. Each base is fashioned from solid slices of exquisitely grained tropical hardwood trees thematically designed to

complement the architecture of the home and the experience of the parrot companion lifestyle. Offering safe, natural space for parrots to roam, play, and discover, Arcametti’s perches have smooth-rolling casters that provide parrots the opportunity to move easily from room to room within the home and socialize with family and flock. Highquality stainless-steel bowls in a choice of gold or silver color are included. Moreover, natural rattan cane and sisal rope wrappings on each tree give birds interesting textures to explore while providing an ergonomically correct grip. A variety of multi-sized holes in the branches allow for customization with toys, puzzles, and foraging spots to meet each bird’s personal preferences. “You can enhance the style and beauty of your home, showcase the vibrancy of your family’s birds, and know that you are the first and only owner of your exclusive Arcametti perch,” Leong added. “The bases are original visionary works painstakingly crafted with integrity, aesthetic, environment, and avian companionship in mind.” More information on each unique design and ordering details can be found at https://arcametti.com/.

I

’d like to introduce our October cover guest, a successful entrepreneur, my friend, Evolver, a great source of motivation, Ekim Kaya. He is the Tai Lopez of his country. He is a hard-working man who was the first person in Turkey to talk about and initiate the trend of Amazon dropshipping and creating an additional source of income. I refer to him as a hard-worker because his success is not a coincidence. Before I moved to the US a few years ago, I got to know him through his YouTube and Instagram videos just like everyone else. Back then he was in the US and I was in Turkey. I didn’t personally know him. During my first year in the US, we coincidentally met in person at my birthday as he happened to be one of the best friends of a friend of mine. We are both Turkish, though Ekim moved to the US a few years before I did. With an intention to generate some additional revenue he purchased Tai Lopez’s training. The investment he made in that training back then paid off for itself as Ekim has now become someone who enjoys living in a New York high-rise and driving a Lamborghini. Certainly, this was not a quick and simple process. As a matter of fact, his journey of personal growth is exactly what we talked about for this interview. I asked all about his journey and he responded. Hope you enjoy reading this!

How and when did your US adventure begin? How has this journey transformed you? I’ve been dreaming of living in the US since high school. After college, I came to Virginia for my graduate studies. Followed by New York, Los Angeles, and back to New York again. I think America is the best place to pursue your entrepreneurial endeavors. Considering the business-friendly environment and a culture that rewards risk-takers, this country definitely made me feel welcomed. And I think it’s not about the ease of doing things, but finding the courage and resilience to keep going even when you’re feeling down. So I definitely appreciate being here, I’ve learned a lot. When and how did you start the ecommerce business? Back at a time when you were not yet a recognized figure in the business, what encouraged you to invest in this? My software business went bankrupt after trying to survive as a “zombie” startup for 11 years. Then I started looking at online income sources trying to make ends meet. I took on some gigs on freelancer websites, but that wasn’t so exciting as they were not scalable. That’s when I discovered youngsters in their 20’s were creating wonders with an e-commerce model called “dropshipping”. Since this business

model required little to none upfront investment, it made sense to give it a try and I succeeded. Then I decided to share my “secrets” with my followers because there was literally no information available in my native language back then. It took off, and in three years, I was able to reach more than 10K students. Then the business model has evolved from online courses to consultancy, where we do the heavy lifting for our customers. Of your continually improving services, could you tell us about your latest offering in automation? The new automation program has been successfully executed by some US-based businesses for the last couple of years. This is a “done-for-you” kind of business where the customer isn’t expected to do anything except for an initial investment. We help them start an LLC, open an Amazon account, find profitable products, and handle the fulfillment and customer service on behalf of them. This is truly a passive-income and makes much more sense in many ways compared to other e-commerce methods. Our difference is that we do it in a way that’s 100% compliant with Amazon’s rules and regulations, so there’s minimal risk involved. In less than two months, we were able to sign more than 70 clients for this program.

You’ve made a name in your home country as someone who’s been educating people on running an ecommerce business in the US, but could you kindly introduce yourself for our readers in the US? I have the heart of an entrepreneur and the mind of an engineer. In the early stages of my career as a network engineer, I realized that I’m not able to focus on executing routine tasks. But in a 9 to 5 job, you simply can’t say “this task is too boring for me, I wanna do something else.” So I had to create a new reality where I could set my own rules. That’s easier said than done of course. It took me a lot of trial and error, but I finally succeeded with e-commerce. Now I’m helping other people with starting their own online businesses.

Even though you have established yourself as a businessman, you seem to focus quite a lot on personal development as well and share pieces on this subject with your followers. I personally know quite a few people you’ve inspired. What’s the source of your energy, driving your motivation? Thank you for your nice comments. Well, the first step is always the hardest. That’s why people are always hesitant to take it. And over the course of three years that I’ve been teaching financial independence, I have realized that you can’t really “convince” people. All you can do is demonstrate your results, and let them decide if they want to change their reality or not. One thing that I’m sure about, is that taking this path is not for everyone. Because most people choose to stay in their comfort zone over trying to change their life for the better. I’ve spent so much time creating content about self-awareness, motivation, and inspiration, but when you see that a Lamborghini video gets 20 times more views, you understand that there’s little you can do to change the people who are not ready to so. My motivation comes from the fact that it’s much more satisfying to hear someone being grateful for quitting their 9 to 5 jobs thanks to your support, than being an Amazon seller. That’s why, I’ve been doing this full time for the last three years, even though it sometimes drains my energy to deal with people who are too cynical.

I have realized that you can’t convince people. All you can do is demonstrate your results, and let them decide if they want to change their reality or not. You discuss money frequently, so let’s hear a bit about your relationship with it. Just like a rock star has perfectly put it: “Money is important only when you don’t have enough of it.” Scientific papers support the evidence that the difference money makes is marginal after a certain amount, and personal satisfaction comes mostly from the sense of connection that humans have in their relationships. Another quote from Jim Carrey supports this idea: “I wish everyone could get rich and famous and everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that’s not the answer.” My current goals -in terms of the metrics that I want to hit- are mostly about the number of lives that I want to touch and transform. All of my mentors have been through a similar transformation process, even in most cases, it starts with monetary targets.

What does “to thrive” mean to you? To be able to fulfill your potential, to become the person that you were meant to become. Leveraging your personal traits to change the world, leave a dent in the universe. What kind of tools and devices do you like to use in your daily life? (tech or non-tech) I have an iPad mini just to read books, in order not to get distracted by notifications I get while I read on an iPhone. I’m using a tool called Roam to take mental notes and build a mind map. I also have an Apple watch and an Oura ring to track my activity and sleep. Regarding the non-tech ones, a Nespresso coffee machine and my humidor are my must-haves for my daily routines.

I’ve spent so much time creating content about self-awareness, motivation, and inspiration, but when you see that a Lamborghini video gets 20 times more views, you understand that there’s little you can do to change the people who are not ready.

Your favorite places and fashion brands? I would say Los Angeles and Istanbul are two of my favorites following New York. I also like Tulum for getaways. I prefer a few brands even though my favorite one is Massimo Dutti. I don’t believe in investing in fashion. And I prefer Omega watches. Books, movies, speeches that inspired you? Oh, I have so many inspiring books, it’s hard to come up with a brief list. So I would recommend to check out my Goodreads list online. I try to read one book summary per day with my Blinkist app. And I can definitely recommend Steve Jobs’ Stanford commencement speech. The pursuit of Happyness and Family Man are my two favorite movies.

What’s next? The first milestone with the automation program is getting to 1000 stores. By then, we’ll have gone global and take one more step towards the goal of changing the world through e-commerce. Considering that e-commerce represents a mere 10% of the whole retail even in America, the potential is huge and we’re so excited! And thank you for the opportunity to share it with your audience.

11 TIPS FOR CREATING WORK/LIFE BALANCE IN THE VIRTUAL WORKFORCE

Written by Jackie Gaines ,Author of Wearing the Yellow Suit: A Guide for Women in Leadership

WELLBEING. When you work remotely—as so many people are doing in the age of COVID-19—there’s no natural boundary between your workday and the rest of your life. Jackie Gaines shows you how to build and maintain greater balance so work doesn’t take over everything else. According to a recent report, the average “pandemic workday” is 48.5 minutes longer than before. It also shows we are attending about 13 percent more meetings and sending 1.4 more emails per day to our colleagues. But this uptick in productivity has a downside: It’s destroying many people’s work/life balance.

“Our work/life balance is already in jeopardy thanks to the impact of COVID-19,” says Gaines, author of Wearing the Yellow Suit: A Guide for Women in Leadership. “Extended workdays only intensify the situation. We are all working hard at our jobs while trying to homeschool our kids, keep the household in order, and still carve out time to connect with loved ones and enjoy our lives. It’s a challenge for everyone.” When you work from home, the “workday” becomes a slippery slope— especially when you’re constantly interrupted by your kids to help them get their schoolwork done online. If

you’re not careful, meeting your work demands in this chaotic environment can crowd out your other priorities. But Gaines says you can take back control by getting very intentional about protecting your work/life balance in these unusual times. “We all need time to recharge from work,” says Gaines. “By setting some healthy habits for greater balance, you’ll be a much better employee or leader during work hours, and you’ll have more energy and focus for the other things you value.” Here is your to-do list for living a balanced life:

Recognize the need for balance and commit to addressing it in your life. If you just devote all your time to work, then you’re going to be neglecting the social, spiritual, and a multitude of other important aspects of your life. Be a whole person; be fulfilled in all different aspects of your life. Figure out what works for you. The “right balance” is a very personal thing and will change for each person at different times in their lives. There is no “one-size-fits-all.” What we need as a young adult is very different from what we need in our senior years…it also may be very different based on our culture, our gender, or any variety of factors. The point is…it is unique for each of us, but definitely something that we all require in our lives. Beware of the technology chains that bind. Cell phones and PCs blur the distinction between work and personal time. Don’t fall victim to this temptation. “In the age of nonstop virtual work meetings, you’re probably already sick of technology by the end of the workday,” says Gaines. “Spend time outside of work away from your devices. Have a conversation with someone in your household. Take a short walk for fresh air. Read a chapter in a book.” Use your faith to help put life into perspective. “Faith makes all things possible,” says Gaines. “It offers me a healthy way to balance all personal, interpersonal, workrelated, and community responsibilities. It is a rock to stand on in this crazy world…strength.” Be organized. The most important issues related to having a good balance are organization, planning, and time management. This could mean planning meals a week in advance, laying out clothes the night before, and spending as much evening time with young children as possible. Recognize that balance takes work. Balance is a necessary part of life— especially right now. It’s up to you to manage it. The choices made have costs and benefits associated with them. It is something that always has to be kept in

mind to ensure that no component is neglected for too long. Here are some choices to think about: • Consciously separate work and home. • Consciously put family first. • Work fewer hours. In work-fromhome scenarios, set boundaries between work time and leisure time. • Choose shift work so one partner is home to care for other family members. • Learn to make do with less. Have goals. Know your goal and plan accordingly. Know your priorities in life and what’s important. Don’t sweat the small stuff. “I don’t stress out about daily life situations and I remember how fortunate I am to be healthy and safe,” says Gaines. “Most of all, you live only once and you need to strive for what you want and make the best of it. I don’t want to regret anything I didn’t do now when I am older.” Enjoy life—focus on what is going well, not what is stressful. Take time to play, laugh, love, work, cry together, and respect each other. We all make mistakes at home and work. Take time for yourself and smile. Remain fit and use exercise as a way to deal with stress. “I feel people who exercise regularly are better able to handle stress,” says

Gaines. “Whether it’s 5:00 a.m. or 6:00 in the evening, exercising can improve the quality of your day. I also believe in recognizing the need for leisure activities that you enjoy, feeling connected to the community, and having goals for the future.” Make a date with yourself. “You have probably heard about this trend for married couples to have a date night actually scheduled,” says Gaines. “I would like to push you into starting a new trend: date night, or morning…lunch…weekend…with yourself. If scheduling works best for you (it does for me), go for it! During your date time, do whatever it is that makes you happy—exercise, read, meditate, pray—whatever gives you just a small break for yourself. You will be surprised at the change you immediately start to feel in the quality of your life.” Remember, there is no magic pill that helps you find balance. We have to spark that journey in ourselves or continue on the cycle of madness. Finding balance has to be a priority. “A balanced life does not equate to 50/50 at all times either,” concludes Gaines. “However, if we are always running crazy, we will eventually implode. Strive to tilt the scales in the other direction periodically.”

hen was the last time you were enjoying an activity so much that you lost track of time, perhaps even skipped a meal, or missed your bedtime, and still felt energized afterwards? I get this feeling every time I’m creating a workshop, working on a new lecture for my students, and even when I’m preparing for a coaching session with a client. I just love the process of being immersed in information, doing research, reading and taking notes, breaking the content down to its fundamentals, and then piecing them back together, organizing and designing it in a way so that I can create an engaging visual story that helps my audience enjoy learning new information and find practical ways to internalize it going forward.

of their field, whether it’s business, music, science, arts, sports. We might admire these people for having found their passion, we may even be envious of their luck that their professions combine their natural abilities with things they actually enjoy doing. That process comes naturally to me, it makes sense, it is work but feels like play, it’s challenging in the most delightful way and even though sometimes it gets really tough somehow it still feels effortless. Does this sound familiar to you? Doing something for the sake of the activity itself, for the process and not necessarily the outcome, feeling energized in the moment, driven and excited by the progress you’re making without worrying about the end result, and you get this euphoric sense of accomplishment afterwards. I’m hoping you recognize this feeling which you might have heard people refer to as being in one’s natural element, functioning in a flow state, being in the zone, feeling connected with one’s authentic and true self. These terms are most commonly used to describe people who have attained exceptional achievements in their domains regardless

Fortunately, we all have the opportunity to find this state of being and the intersection of our natural abilities and our passion by reflecting on our past. Discovering these areas, uncovering our possibly untapped talents and building on them going forward will help us thrive in the future and contribute to us leading a happier and fulfilling life. Our past is filled with stories and hints about what we are good at, what we genuinely love, and how we thrived when we did. I hope that you’re curious about what you might find on this journey reflecting on your past experiences, tapping into and exploring things that intrigued you back then and digging into the memories of the experiences you truly enjoyed and felt energized by.

OUR MOST AUTHENTIC SELF IS EDUCATED OUT OF OUR SYSTEMS

below will help you uncover your possibly hidden authentic self and bring it back to life.

When we were kids we probably had a much better sense of what we enjoyed and what we were effortlessly good at even though we may not have been consciously aware of it. Unfortunately, we start losing this clarity and confidence in our natural abilities and preferences as we grow up, being tremendously influenced by our families, our society, our culture and our schools, and their expectations of how we ought to be. I consider myself fortunate to have built a life and a career that allows me to enjoy my work so much, and I couldn’t have had the courage or the inspiration to go on this path had I not discovered TED Talks in 2008 and watched the remarkable Sir Ken Robinson, one of the most brilliant minds of our time who sadly passed away last month. In his famous talk, “Do schools kill creativity” he is witty and charming as he delivers stories on creativity, the education system’s focus on academic ability not taking into account an individual’s aptitudes and natural preferences, and how we might reshape our thinking to unleash our creative capacities. This talk made me wonder, for the first time, whether I was on the path of my own choosing or following a template that I had adopted from society, trying to fit in, please and feel accepted. I have to admit that that period of questioning my whole life, my choices up to that point, even my whole existence, was not the happiest of times but buried underneath the darkness, I found the light and little crumbs of my most authentic self that led me to this path I am on today. I’m hoping that the exercises and questions

REFLECT ON YOUR PAST You deserve to live the most fulfilling life and that’s why you should make it a priority to take some time out of your day to sit down and reflect on your past. The purpose of these exercises is to help you identify the areas that truly energize and interest you. The goal is not for you to drop everything and go on a completely new path, but to find ways to start incorporating these areas into your life, perhaps taking opportunities to explore your untapped talents.

Exercise 1: Remembering Your Childhood Below are some questions you might ask yourself, journal and reflect on or better yet discuss it with someone. I’ll include examples to get your juices flowing: Think back to when you were a kid, a teenageer or maybe even when you were in college.

1. What were the things you genuinely enjoyed and looked forward to?

It could be anything that pops in your mind: breaking apart and piecing together things around the house to understand how they work, creating and

Our past is filled with stories and hints about what we are good at, what we genuinely love, and how we thrived when we did.

rehearsing dance routines, baking cakes and cookies with your mom and testing your own recipes, watching “Making the Video” on MTV to understand the process and story behind shooting a video, spending hours in nature exploring the life of bugs and insects.

2. What were the areas that intrigued your interest whether or not you acted on them? When I was 12-13 years old, we had one computer at home in the back room and I was only allowed to be on it for a limited time on Saturdays. I remember buying architecture magazines that came with CDs of demo versions of various design software and just playing around with them, building houses, trying to make sense of the structures in these complicated programs. Then in 2000, Sims, the video game, was released and you can imagine my excitement switching to a more colorful and fun way of building houses. Unfortunately,

I was not able to pursue a career in architecture because we had a family business in retail, and it was “suggested” that I study business. Fortunately, after getting my business degree and making my family proud, I was able to pursue a secondary education in visual communication design and incorporate design into my work. I feel confident that my interest in architecture will manifest itself at some point in my life.

3. What were some of the things that came naturally to you?

When I think about school, I remember being good at specific assignments more than a particular subject like math, science or art. I distinctly recall the poster I designed to capture Antoni Gaudí’s life, his works and his influence on architecture, or the 40-page “Greek Mythology” binder and the board we created for the history fair that got us the “best presentation award” - I had no idea there was such an award. I was a visual thinker and a very curious kid, so I just loved assignments where I could do tons of research and then communicate my findings visually. I’m happy to report that my first company in New York focused on creating pitch decks and fundraising

You deserve to live the most fulfilling life and that’s why you should make it a priority to take some time out of your day to sit down and reflect on your past. materials for startups because that process just comes naturally to me. People say that I have a unique way of capturing content, conceptualizing it and delivering it in a visually appealing and memorable way that helps the audience engage in it - and since that is such a lengthy description, they now refer to it as “putting the magic touch”. (Yes, I love when they say that.) You might be great with numbers, theoretical arguments, building something with your hands, playing musical instruments, dancing and expressing yourself with your movements.

4. What were some of your quirks, uncommon traits, thoughts and behaviors?

My brother has been making fun of me my whole life, to this day, because I prefer to make presents and not buy them. When I was a kid, I would gift a painting of sorts as most other kids did. Then, I started making more elaborate designs that were not super impressive in quality but I loved the process of taking the information I have of someone (their interests, our relationship, their favorite things) and then creating a story to make something unique just for them. Yes, you could not exchange or re-gift these gifts but that was the confidence I had in my ability to create something unique for someone that would make them happy and feel special. I can confidently say that I still incorporate this approach to my work today, and of course my gifts.

Exercise 2: Remembering Your Accomplishments This exercise helps you focus more on the skills you have developed, the settings that you thrived in and the tasks you enjoyed working on. It takes a little bit of time and focus and you can always come back to this exercise. Inspired by the book What Colour is your Parachute, by Richard Nelson Bolles.

1. Make a list of 10-15 of all your significant, enjoyable and satisfying accomplishments, both from your personal and professional life. It could be from any point in time in your life. Make them specific! I could include my “best presentation award” from high school. For instance, instead of “volunteering”, write down “I ran a session for the public elementary school kids”, instead of “meeting our annual targets at work” write down “our whole team brainstormed ideas and found a new model to increase our efficiency and we met our annual targets” 2. Then, select 5-7 of these accomplishments that stands out to you and write a paragraph answering the following questions: • What did you do? What did you do best? What were the skills you used? • What aspect of it did you enjoy the most? • What did you achieve? Why was it significant for you? • What was the subject matter? • What was the setting? • How was your relationship with others? How were the interactions? • Were you working alone or in a team, what was your role? • How did you feel? 3. Once you are done writing these, you’ll see patterns emerging giving you a bit more clarity on the skills you enjoy using, the settings you perform well in and the areas that interest you.

You can now make a list of these and compare it to what you are currently doing in your life, see how you can incorporate more of these and be more open to opportunities going forward.

FINAL THOUGHTS

You deserve to spend your time and energy on things you truly enjoy and you are naturally good at. You deserve to be in your element, to be in a flow state and work on things that are at the intersection of what you are good at and what love doing, what you are passionate about. You are more capable and creative than you give yourself credit for, you just need to uncover your buried or perhaps untapped talents, remember the areas that genuinely intrigued you in the past. The only step you need to take right now is to reflect back on your past, be mindful of the present and be open to opportunities, nothing more. We will dive deeper into envisioning our future and rethinking our daily routines in the upcoming issues. I hope this journey to your past is one that is enlightening, inspiring and energizing. What we have already experienced, enjoyed and accomplished in our lives can provide so much insight into how we can set ourselves up for success in the future, and you owe it to yourself to explore what your past has to show you about your most authentic self.

WHY 2020 IS PROOF THAT WE DON’T NEED SELF-CARE, WE NEED COMMUNITY CARE Written by Libby Pecheur

WELLBEING. Over the past nine months, our nation and the world have been battered with one crippling blow after the next, from the spread and devastation of coronavirus to the murder of George Floyd to the deaths of beloved leaders and icons including Kobe and Gianna Bryant, John Lewis, Naya Rivera, Chadwick Boseman, and Ruth Bader Ginsberg, all in conjunction with a looming presidential election that is sure to shake us to our core regardless of who is sworn in on January 20, 2021. What do we do when the stakes continue to stack higher and higher to a point when we can’t glimpse whether or not there is even the hope of a win on the other side? How do we begin to process one trauma when another one strikes before we have time to catch our breath? At a time when the

need for self-care seems to be at an all-time peak, particularly for those communities most impacted by 2020’s mounting heartaches - Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), in particular – is there room in our process for healing and protection to look outward and perhaps to be even more attentive to the needs and trauma of others? Prior to 2020, we were already existing in a “me first” culture, perhaps even a “me above all” culture. We see entire industries centered on self-care and “treat yo-self” messaging. We are told and tell ourselves that we alone are in control of our destiny. And yet, all other devastations of 2020 aside, what COVID-19 alone has revealed is that we are a society completely at the mercy of one another, and we have far less control than we may want to believe. While self-love is absolutely critical in the formula for a

healthy and joyful life, it’s not the only ingredient, and it’s not always the most important one. The decisions we make or don’t make, the measures we implement or do not, they have the power to impact people we’ve never even met. Rather than meditating on and indulging in the power of oneness, of me-ness, there is an even greater potential power of we. The Thirty’s Audrey Noble speaks to the blurred line between self-care and taking care of our collective health:

There’s a difference between pampering yourself and taking care of your overall health, and oftentimes they are interconnected (yes, if the occasional retail therapy trip lifts your mood and makes you happy, that’s a good thing). But self-care is more than just a “treat yo’self” mentality. It is rooted in taking care of your mental and physical health to the best of your ability so that you can live a life that benefits yourself and those around you.

What the intensity and sobering nature of this year have revealed is that while self-care is absolutely critical, self-care is only as good as the impact it has on the environment around us. If we invest hours and dollars into our own peace of mind and even the escape from reality without it expanding our humanity and care for others, is our self-care in fact a self-centered practice of avoiding uncomfortable and difficult decisions, conversations, or relationships? Is it robbing us of the opportunity to love and heal alongside others, or to even notice the pain of others? After the terrorist attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2019, award-winning writer and community organizer Nakita Valerio tweeted a statement that went unexpectedly viral: “Shouting ‘self-care’ at people who actually need community care is how we fail people.” After seeing the several thousand shares, likes, and mentions of her words, it was clear to Valerio that “the sentiment seemed to resonate with people.” Later in a phone interview with Mashable, Valerio defined community care as “people committed to leveraging their privilege to be there for one another in various ways.” This concept of community care strikes an acutely strong chord at this moment in our nation and in our world. As the wellness of communities grows increasingly unstable, there seems to be an audible crying out literally begging the question, “who will stand with us?” While community care is not a sexy, expensive aromatherapy bubblebath kit, it delivers a product of infinitely more worth – the collective healing and progress of those around us. By all means, let us continue to care for ourselves and honor our needs. Then let us take our self-loved selves out into our communities to distribute that same concern and honor so that we might face 2021 stronger, more unified, and more cared for than any year before.

10 SIMPLE STRESS RELIEF TIPS FOR TIMES OF EXTREME STRESS Written by Susie Mantell, Award-Winning Stress Relief Expert & Audiobook Author

WELLBEING.

In times of uncertainty or disrupted routine, it’s not unusual to experience some difficulty falling asleep — or staying asleep — waking exhausted, anxious, and unsettled. (Sound familiar?) As you balance your days with gentle self-care, I hope the following will help you find mindful relaxation, restful sleep, and renewed energy whenever you need some! 1. PUT YOUR BODY CHEMISTRY TO WORK FOR YOU. Supporting our physical wellbeing can also enhance emotional resilience. Make your attention to wellness a daily gift to yourself, and your loved ones. Get some moderate, pleasurable exercise. Even a walk around the block can boost the “feel-good factor.” If you can’t go out, create ways to move indoors. Gently stretch, try an online exercise class, or crank up the music you love and dance! Smiling can lift your spirits even when you don’t feel like it—even when you’re by yourself! In times of extreme stress our concentration may be off, so pay extra attention to everyday safety. 2. BEGIN TO THINK OF THE FOLLOWING AS “ESSENTIAL DAILY NUTRIENTS:” Fresh Air • Time in Nature • Restful Sleep • Easy Conversation • Laughter & Fun • Acts of Kindness • Music & Creative Expression • Gratitude • Movement • Meditation & Mindfulness • Journaling • Lifelong Learning • Affection • Personally Meaningful Spirituality • Healthy Nutrition & Hydration. It’s easy to forget to plan meals and drink enough water—or to reach for empty carbs when we’re bored, blue or lonely. Monitor your use of sugar, alcohol, and caffeine, and avoid excesses. 3. ROUTINE HELPS US STAY BALANCED. Very little may feel “normal” right now. Try to maintain routine activities you can perform safely. Or create new

routines based on current circumstances. Stress can be exhausting. Rest when you need to. Then get up and do something productive. Accomplishing even small tasks can boost your spirits and lift your mood. 4. AVOID “INFORMATION OVERLOAD.” Know When to Turn Off Media and Power Down Devices. Get as much factual information as necessary to stay safe and informed, but disregard rumors and avoid repetitive reports. Try not to let your imagination “catastrophize” when you don’t have all the facts yet. Meditation is a simple, powerful stress relief tool for reducing worry. (See #10.) 5. IS THERE A SAFE WAY TO HELP SOMEONE ELSE? Each moment holds opportunities to grow, to try again, to say “Thank you,” or “I’m so sorry,” or... “How can I help?” Make check-in calls, donate time, skills, resources, or finances in safely- distant ways. We never know when a simple act of kindness that takes us 30 seconds may echo for a lifetime in the heart of the recipient. 6. DO YOU CARE FOR CHILDREN OR OTHER ADULTS? In addition to providing for their physical and emotional wellbeing, make time every day for your own respite and renewal to ensure the strength, stability, and stamina you’ll need as you care for others. 7. SCHEDULE AT LEAST ONE PLEASURABLE ACTIVITY AND LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY. Read something fun, informative, or spiritually meaningful for you. Play a word game or enjoy some music, take an online course, paint a room, enjoy a “virtual” lunch date with a friend. Take a nap. Organize a closet. [OK. That last one’s not so much fun until afterward!] See #1 and #2 above for more ideas.

8. AN HOUR BEFORE BED, DIM THE LIGHTS, AND TURN OFF TECHNOLOGY TO HELP YOUR BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT PREPARE FOR SLEEP. Try a soothing bath, some light reading, or upbeat TV. Counting blessings and wishing on stars, meditation, prayers and gentle conversation are some of the ways we connect with whatever’s meaningful for us… and find restful sleep. 9. LET FRIENDS KNOW YOU NEED THEM — AND THAT YOU’RE THERE FOR THEM, TOO. Stay connected, even if it’s via text or email. Be alone when you need to be. Then reach out and reconnect. Safety Note: If you’re ever concerned that someone’s physical, mental, or emotional safety may be at risk, always err on the side of caution and seek medical support. 10. MINDFULNESS AND MEDITATION ARE SOOTHING, POWERFUL TOOLS FOR STRESS REDUCTION, RELAXATION & RESILIENCE. The Buddhist term: “Monkey Mind” is a very apt description of our restless thoughts and mental chatter. Many various forms of meditation have been practiced throughout history and across cultures to soothe and replenish body, mind, and spirit, quiet the mind, enhance resilience, and reduce stress. Mindfulness, and Guided Imagery meditation, like the 3 soothing meditations I’ve included in my new stress relief audiobook, “Your Present: A Half-Hour of Peace, 2nd Edition Revised and Expanded,” is an easily accessible form for beginners and seasoned meditators alike, and requires no prior training to benefit—even the very first time. Just slow down, sit back and let the soothing narration carry you in deep relaxation or effortless sleep! https://relaxintuit.com Whatever your personal challenges, I wish you abiding Good Health, Hope, Patience, and as always, above all, Peace...

Gisele Bündchen Partners with Insight Timer to Encourage Millions to Meditate For Free WELLBEING. Insight Timer, the world’s largest free meditation app for anxiety, stress, and sleep, launches a bilingual partnership with philanthropist, environmentalist, and meditation enthusiast, Gisele Bündchen. Bündchen has been using Insight Timer for meditation for over 4 years and was inspired by the app’s mission-driven, conscious business model to teach on the app, at a time where free meditation has never been more important. A Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations since 2009, Bündchen has long been working to leave the Earth a better place for future generations. To mark the official launch of the partnership, Bündchen’s first guided meditation, Hope In Times Of Uncertainty, was released on the app in English and Portuguese. Bündchen will continue to add free meditations in both languages each month. The practices will address issues experienced worldwide in response to the pandemic (including higher levels of stress and anxiety, problems with sleep) and will also include meditation for parents and their children. Bündchen will use Insight Timer’s new in-app live streaming feature to connect in real-time with her followers in October to honor Anxiety and Depression Awareness Month. During the free live talks, Bündchen will share her story about the impact meditation has had on her life and tips for making it a daily habit. She will host the session in English on October 10, for World Mental Health Day, and on October 19 in Portuguese. “We are proud to evolve our relationship with Gisele, from an Insight Timer user to a partner who connects meaningfully with our mission and community worldwide”, says Christopher Plowman, CEO of Insight Timer. “With her passion for sharing meditation and international following, we are excited to have Gisele align with our brand to bring free meditation to the planet, particularly during these times of heightened stress and anxiety.” Unlike any other app in the health and wellness space, Insight Timer offers its 17 million users access to its guided meditation library (55,000 of them in 44 languages) for free. With the World Health Organization and the United Nations reporting a dramatic increase in worldwide rates of depression and anxiety since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, access to free, global resources like Insight Timer is more important than ever. “I chose [to work with] Insight Timer not only because they offer such diverse and high-quality content for all tastes and needs, but also because they offer the library for free, making it accessible to more people,” says Bündchen.

“Meditation transformed my life in incredible ways and gave birth to a new phase in my life that brought me much more joy and balance than I’d ever experienced before. It continues to be a powerful, positive influence in my life today, and I’m so happy for this partnership with Insight Timer to be able to share this amazing tool with as many people as possible,” says Bündchen.

WOOLROOM BRINGS ITS GREEN, TEMPERATURE REGULATING BEDDING WELLBEING.

• Biodegradable and hypoallergenic • Traceable back to the farm they came from

In times when sleep may be difficult, the Woolroom products provide a complete clean sleep environment, using ethically sourced wool that works with your body instead of against it. Woolroom bedding products are:

“Our team is excited to bring the ultimate clean sleep environment to the U.S.,” said Chris Tattersall, Managing Director of the Woolroom. “Wool targets the root of many sleep difficulties, including temperature regulation and moisture, and is hypoallergenic and breathable, unlike many polyester or manmade fibers as well as natural fibers such as down or feathers used in American bedding.”

The Woolroom, the world’s premium wool bedding manufacturer, launches in the US, with online ordering and customized bundles available now for American consumers.

• Naturally designed to clean the air around you • Capable of targeting the root of sleep issues (temperature & moisture) - not just a “band-aid” fix • Able to help the body stay at a stable temperature all night long, naturally absorbing moisture and releasing it back into the air

Unlike the wool fabric many Americans grew up with, scratchy and overly hot, the Woolroom products are soft and temperature balanced through careful selection of the right wool from the right breeds of sheep.

NOURI ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF PROACTIVE IMMUNE SOLUTION WELLBEING. Since announcing Nouri’s national launch and distribution with Whole Foods Market earlier this year, the company has been focused on continuing to deliver solutions for today’s consumer. Nouri announces the introduction of their daily, proactive immune solution “Inner Immune.” Many products in the immune category are designed to be taken only as needed. Nouri’s Inner Immune is built differently: to be a proactive solution by supporting the immune system through gut health. “While consumers generally relate gut health to digestive issues, science continues to show that it effects much more. 70% of the immune system resides in your gut and thus, a healthy gut equates to a healthier immune system,” says Nouri’s Leader of Science, David Keller. The company, founded by 26-year-old Caroline Beckman, notes significant growth in the consumption of pre/probiotic supplements this year adding to the already substantial $59-billion-dollar gut health category. Specific to 2020, younger consumers are increasing their vitamin and supplement consumption, with 74% of millennials reporting that they are taking more supplements as a result of COVID-19.

Inner Immune combines daily vitamins and minerals with powerful prebiotics, probiotics, and a novel immunobiotic. In addition, the product includes L-Glutamine, Beta Glucan, and Colostrum IgG Power. Using plant substitutes for sugar, Inner Immune is deliciously free of sugar and calories. “My goal is to help this generation get ahead of problems that are bound to come. It’s not a matter of if our bodies will be challenged, it’s a matter of if we are equipping our bodies to respond properly,” says Beckman. She continues, “Inner Immune is really exciting for us. We are already seeing the great potential that we will have to reach more people and help them in a proactive way. There has never been a more urgent time for this solution.” The product is delivered in a powder format to be dissolved into water, a smoothie, or a beverage. “In analyzing why consumers purchase food and beverages, we know that 63% of consumers purchase based on taste followed by 58% who purchase based on price,” Beckman adds, “in addition to a strength of science, both of these factors are extremely important to us.” Nouri’s gut health solutions are available nationwide at www. dailynouri.com, Amazon.com, and at all Whole Foods locations.

5 SEASONAL DIY HOME IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS 68 T H E E V O LV E M A G O C T O B E R 2 0 2 0

|

T H E E V O LV E M A G . C O M

LIFESTYLE. The calendar pages may be turning fast, but it’s not too late to do some work around the house. Now is the time to wrap up home improvement projects before the weather turns too cold. Consider these five easy DIY tasks that can set you up for a warm, safe, and pest-free fall: Perform routine HVAC maintenance. Heating and cooling systems need regular service to operate at peak efficiency. Some tasks are best left to the pros, but there is plenty you can do on your own to minimize expenses and ensure your unit maintains its performance level. With the breaker and gas off, wipe the exterior of your furnace with a damp rag then remove the access door and vacuum the burners, base, and blower compartment. Remove and clean the blower with a vacuum and small brush then use a drinking straw to blow the dust off the pilot. Also, inspect the flame sensor, drive belt, and air filter, and clean or replace it as needed. Air seal drafty areas. The gaps around windows and door frames give unwanted air an open invitation into a home. However, you can quickly and easily block the flow of air for greater comfort and lower energy bills. If the doors and windows are already finished, start by removing the trim. Prep the area by removing dust and debris. Using a quality sealant like Great Stuff Window & Door Insulating Foam Sealant, apply the foam to fill in about 50% of the gap around the window or door and framework, allowing room for the foam to expand. Wipe away imperfections and let sit 10-15 minutes until it’s no longer tacky. Gently press the expanded foam into the gap using a putty knife.

Check for damage to hardscaping. Walkways, patios, and decks are all susceptible to wear that can lead to tripping hazards or allow rain, snow, and ice to seep in and create larger problems. Take time to thoroughly assess these hardscape features and identify issues like loose stones and cracks in concrete that need repairs. Securing materials, filling cracks, and patching problem areas can help prevent further damage during the colder months while restoring aesthetic appeal. Inspect your home’s exterior. Many elements of your home serve essential roles in protecting your safety, regulating your home’s efficiency, and preventing damage. It’s important to regularly check your roof for signs it needs to be repaired, such as missing or cracked shingles or noticeable sagging. Gutters can also accumulate a great deal of debris from falling leaves. Clearing these before cooler temperatures set in can help ensure rain has a clear path away from your house, protecting the walls and foundation. Also, pay attention to other elements like paint that may require periodic updates to maintain its protective function. Eliminate entry points for pests. When temperatures start dropping, you’re likely to see some movement with creatures who want to enjoy the comfort of your home. Make it clear they’re not welcome by sealing up places they may be creeping in. A solution like Great Stuff Pestblock Insulating Foam Sealant lets you fill gaps and openings with a quick bead of foam. If a rodent has an established pathway, try using a combination of steel wool and the foam to deter it from gnawing through the barrier. Find additional tips for seasonal home projects at greatstuff.dupont.com.

Safety Steps for Spooky Fun You can still ensure a special night for your little ones and all the ghouls, goblins and ghosts in your neighborhood by following safety measures aimed at keeping everyone healthy on All Hallows’ Eve. Consider these tips for safe trick-or-treating from the experts at the National Safety Council and leading candy maker, Mars Wrigley.

• Don’t hand out treats if you are not feeling well. • Consider socially distanced options such as “trunk-or-treating,” during which prepackaged goodies are handed out, or a virtual costume parade. Alternately, you can use a tool like Mars Wrigley’s “TREAT TOWNTM,” an app-based digital experience for families to virtually trick-or-treat for real candy. It offers Halloween fans of all ages the ability to create personalized spooky avatars, customized decorations for your in-app “door” and the ability to “knock” on the doors of friends and family across the country. Visit Treat-Town.com to find more information.

BEFORE

DURING

LIFESTYLE.

Traditional family activities like trick-ortreating create fun moments and memories, but the effects of COVID-19 on this Halloween will bring about change for the spooky excitement.

• Buy individually wrapped candy to hand out to trick-ortreaters. Fun-size packs are one of the easiest forms of candy for trick-or-treaters to grab and go. • Create fun, individual candy goody bags for a no-touch option for trick-or-treaters. • Make sure your yard is well-lit; replace any burnt-out light bulbs. • Create signs encouraging trick-or-treaters to stay 6 feet apart and display them in your yard.

• Make trick-or-treating care packs with hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes and extra face masks. • Help little ones clean their hands throughout the night. • Maintain a distance of 6 feet from other groups of trick-ortreaters, allowing one group to collect candy at a time. • Wear face masks and reflective tape or clothing and carry flashlights or glow sticks if you’re walking in the dark. • Do “mask checks.” Stop in a safe place and make sure young children’s masks are covering their mouths and noses.

• Use sidewalks and crosswalks. Don’t cross the street between cars and be as visible as possible as drivers may be distracted. • Consider setting up a grab-and-go “candy corner” for visitors, inclusive of hand sanitizer and treats.

AFTER

• Wash your hands when you get home. • Sanitize candy wrappers before eating or let it sit for 24 hours. • Follow the “when in doubt, throw it out” rule. Throw away any candy that is open, ripped or has torn packaging, an unusual appearance or pinholes. Discard any homemade items made by people you don’t know. • Watch for choking hazards. If you have a young child, make sure candy he or she collected isn’t a choking hazard. If it is, discard it. • Keep candy away from pets, especially chocolate and sugar-free gum, which can be poisonous for your furry friends.

HANDING OUT TREATS FROM HOME

If you’re staying home to hand out treats to the superheroes, ghosts, princesses and other little guests that arrive on your doorstep, consider these ideas to encourage safety and fun: • Minimize the number of hands reaching into a bowl. Find fun, hands-free ways to give candy to trick-or-treaters. You can place candy on your lawn or driveway, so trick-or-treaters don’t have to crowd around your front door, touch handrails or knock. • Move out of the way any items that children could trip over and keep pets inside. • Stand outside when handling treats, wear a mask and use hand sanitizer often. Consider keeping a large bottle of sanitizer near you for visitors to use as well. • Allow one small group at a time at your door. • Give out one set of treats at a time to minimize hands reaching into a common bowl. For example, fun-size packs of treats like M&M’s and SNICKERS offer plenty of options and are easy for trick-or-treaters to grab and go.
