Welcome
Welcome to Tarmon N.S., a rural co-educational primary school in the parish of Castlerea. It caters for the education of children from Early Intervention to Sixth Class. The school was established in 1890. The current enrolment is 228 pupils with 20 teachers and 15 SNAs. Tarmon N.S. provides a wholesome education where pupils experience comprehensive indoor and outdoor teaching and learning. Every year there is a variety of activities organised. Please visit our website to get an insight into the everyday life of our school community.
School Ethos
Our school is a Catholic Primary School. It aims to promote Catholic Ethos and values. Implicit in this is the intention to respect the rights of all children and parents regardless of their denomination. We aim to teach values such as kindness, friendship, looking after each other and respect. Each individual is valued, encouraged and respected for their uniqueness and facilitated to reach their full potential in a positive manner.
School Uniform
Our school uniform comprises of: grey trousers/skirt/pinafore, grey/white polo shirt, green jumper/cardigan with school crest, green tie.
Tracksuits (navy and green with school crest) are available to order on line from: https://schoolwearhouse.ie/schools-list/
Cultural Diversity
Tarmon N.S. recognises that all children have a culture and ethnicity. Learning to value their own culture and ethnicity is central to their self-esteem and sense of identity. Intercultural education facilitates all children in coming to value their own heritage and the heritage of others.
Parental Involvement
We encourage parents/guardians to be involved in their child’s/ children’s education, support them with school homework and school activities. Parents as a group have a wide range of talents, abilities and skills that have the potential to enrich and extend the educational opportunities provided for pupils.
School Opening Times
The school opens at 9.20am for all pupils. Infant classes finish school at 2pm and all other classes finish at 3pm. We ask that your child is punctual for school, be left off on time each morning and be picked up promptly at school closure times. Children are not insured outside school opening and closing times.
Morning and Evening Supervision is available with Happy Feet Childcare.
Home/School Links
We value the positive relationships we have with the families in our school. A parent/guardian is welcome to talk to or phone a teacher anytime providing that a suitable appointment time has been arranged. Parent Teacher meetings are held annually, usually before the Hallowe’en break. We can provide the most successful education for the children if we all work together and support each other.
Autism Classes
We have five classes for children with autism in the school with a staff ratio of one teacher and two SNAs per six children. We provide an individual specialised programme for the children in these classes and these children are very much part of the whole school community.
Board of Management
The school is governed by the Board of Management, with eight members: Chairperson, two Parents’ Representatives, Principal Teacher, Teachers’ Representative, Patron’s Nominee and two members of the Community. The Board of Management is responsible for all aspects of the upkeep and maintenance of the school. It is also responsible for the employment of all staff. Strict accounting procedures are adhered to and all Board of Management accounts are audited annually.
Student Council
In Tarmon N.S. we promote a culture where student voice and leadership is fostered. The pupils are empowered and encouraged to improve their learning experience.
Our student council has two representatives from each of the classes First to Sixth. They are elected by their peers. They meet regularly to talk about school issues and they report back to all the classes.
Changemaker Schools
Tarmon N.S. is one of 19 Irish primary Changemaker schools in the DCU Changemaker schools network. All students in Tarmon NS are encouraged to identify as Changemakers and are encouraged to be active, creative citizens who want to make their homes, schools and communities better places. All of the activities that we carry out in the school link to the four Changemaker pillars of creativity, teamwork, leadership and empathy and develop the childrens’ skills in these areas.
