WELCOME BACK After the immediate success we had with our first issue, the future looks bright. The automobile industry has nationally taken a large step in the right direction. And from speaking with some of the local dealerships, we are among that growth. This growth has a direct correlation to the community connection that our premier local dealerships have in their own special ways. Our automotive dealerships and their coinciding industry partners are helping to build this community each and every day. Some of the local events that are really raising some interest and changing the community surroundings are not directly from the dealerships themselves though. Take the State Farm agency of Chad Mitchell on Noland Road. His group presented a plan to build a special needs park by using some charity money donated by State Farm itself. Please take the time to read that article and ponder the impact of these great people. What an amazing story. SUV functionality without the drawbacks SUVs were once the king of the American road. These big, fourwheel-drive vehicles may have guzzled gas, but families loved them because they could do so many different things at the same time: haul lots of kids, tow a boat, and take you to work in style.

Today, though, SUVs have largely been replaced by crossover vehicles, cars that look like SUVs but are actually built quite differently.

To solve that problem, auto makers started making a new kind of vehicle — called a crossover — that combines the best attributes of cars and SUVs.

What is a crossover, and why are they so popular today? Here’s an explanation.

The added weight and bulk of a big, heavy frame and body meant SUVs got terrible gas mileage, similar to heavy-duty pickup trucks. They also drove like big trucks, with a rough, bouncy ride.

Unibody Structure Instead of having a body riding on top of a frame, crossover vehicles have a unibody structure just like passenger cars. Cars started using a unibody layout — which is a one-piece body that provides rigidity like a traditional frame — because it offered better handling and far less weight than older, body-on-frame designs. Efficiency, Agility Because they weigh so much

less, crossovers have significantly better gas mileage than SUVs. In fact, crossovers can do much of what SUVs were designed to do in the first place. They have a big, roomy cabin, typically with a large cargo area for hauling supplies or luggage. Many crossovers are available with third-row seats and come with stylish, rugged-looking bodies. Some are available with all-wheel drive. The biggest downside is that crossovers typically can’t tow as much as a traditional SUV. If you need to pull a heavy boat or trailer, a big, V8-powered pickup truck or SUV may be your best option. But for most people, a crossover vehicle works perfectly for driving around town or even light off-road use, depending on the model. They offer better gas mileage, a more supple and carlike ride, and better handling on pavement. RIDES JUNE 2012

S

tate Farm agent Chad Mitchell learned his parent company had launched an initiative to provide 40 grants of $25,000 each to communities throughout the country. Staying true to State Farm’s commitment of building safer, stronger and better-educated communities, the State Farm Youth Advisory Board pledged to implement a $5 million-a-year service learning initiative to address issues important to youth and communities. Mitchell went online and nominated Independence Parks and Recreation’s plan to build a handicap accessible playground. “When I read about this opportunity I felt we should submit our cause to better the community by providing a playground all children can enjoy,” Mitchell said. “The Parks and Recreation Department had been in the planning stages for a new park, ‘Play with No Boundaries,’ that was approved as part of the parks master plan in 2011.” Out of 3,000 causes that were submitted, the top 100 were voted on through State Farm’s facebook page, with the submission by Mitchell placing in the top 40. “We will be presenting a $25,000 check to the Parks Department at the end of this month,” he said. “Our agency is very excited to be a part of this playground which will make a difference in the lives of many throughout this

area. I am thankful to State Farm and the team of great State Farm agents that represent our company for making this happen.” Since taking over the State Farm agency in January of 2010, Mitchell and his team have made being involved in the community a top priority. As a member of the Independence Chamber and Rotary as well as involved with nearby Truman High School, Mitchell has come to call Independence his home. “I moved to Independence not knowing anything about this town,” he said. “And I’ve quickly come to love and share the passion residents have for their hometown.” The grant from State Farm will help speed up the process for the 5,100 square foot playground, although it’s not slated to be completed for another couple of years. “We’re just thankful for the many people who took the time to go to the facebook page and vote,” he said. “We had over 19,000 votes.” The Chad Mitchell State Farm agency, located at 3600 S. ­­­Blue Springs Harley-Davidson Hosting “Wheels for the Cure” on June 30 By Sandy Turner | The Examiner

T

he American Cancer Society reports that in 2012 an estimated 226,870 new cases of breast cancer will be discovered in women. Blue Springs Harley-Davidson will support cancer patients, survivors and finding a cure with the sixth annual “Wheels for the Cure” on Saturday, June 30. Tammy Edgmon has been an employee at the dealership for seven years and is also the event coordinator. “Last year we had 287 motorcycles participate, raising over $9,000 for breast cancer awareness,” she said. “The devotion of all the riders is so dear to me as I’m a cancer survivor and know the importance of keeping this topic top of mind.” All of the proceeds from “Wheels for the Cure” will be donated to a local breast cancer charity organization with the Worth

family, owners of the dealership, financing and hosting the 90-mile ride. “The Greater Kansas City HOG Chapter volunteers their time to wait at the stops, as it’s a dice run, with prize money being paid out to the highest and lowest hands,” Tammy said of the five stops for riders to have a chance to win. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with a quick start breakfast and the first rider out at 10:30. The ride will conclude back at the dealership with barbeque being served for lunch and live entertainment. “We have some big prizes to give away this year,” she said. “Each year the number of riders increases, as does the money we are able to raise. Hosting a Trike Show July 14 By Sandy Turner | The Examiner

ell’s Powersports, providing powersports vehicles ranging from motorcycles, scooters, ATVs, trikes and side-by-sides is excited to host their fourth annual Trike Show on Saturday, July 14. As an authorized Champion trike dealer, Dell’s Powersports not only wants to share their expertise and knowledge on trikes, but also are excited to provide a forum for the public to display their trikes. “There will be a People’s Choice Judging Contest,” Mark Riggin, co-owner of Dell’s said. “With trophies being presented to first, second and third place.” The morning will kickoff at 9 a.m. with free coffee and donuts and registration for the Trike Show from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. “Spectators and participants will all be asked to choose their favorite trike by voting between 11 and 1 p.m.,” he said. “Everyone can enjoy checking out the trikes and a free lunch of grilled brats.” The awards ceremony will take place between 1:30 and 2 p.m. “There’s just a whole lot of free stuff happening at Dell’s that day,” Riggin said. “Free breakfast, free Trike Show and free lunch, as well as the opportunity to enjoy sharing trikes. ou don’t have to be a car-care fanatic to appreciate the necessity of keeping your auto clean inside and out. As your biggest investment besides your home, it should be taken care of and protected. � Cars go through plenty of

dirty situations, from pollution-packed acid rain to dirty, allergy-inducing air. � Lisa Schimling, public relations coordinator for Griot’s Garage, a recognized brand in car care products, recommends washing your car once a week. � “Not only will it be worth more in the long run, bringing a better resale value, you’ll save your paint. That should be your No. 1 goal, protecting your paint,” she said. � Before cold weather hits, here are some tips for keeping your car looking like a million bucks. »»

Get everything you need and put it near the car. Fill one bucket with water and another with water and the correct amount of car soap. Experts advise against using dishwashing soap as it strips off the paint’s protective layer. Instead, use a product with lubricant that will separate the sand and dirt off the paint and not scratch the surface.

Hose off the car to loosen dirt. By the way, wash your car in the shade or on an overcast day. The sun can cause uneven drying, leaving streaks.

Using a car mitt or sponge, begin washing your car in sections top to bottom. Rinse off soaped sections as you go so soap doesn’t dry on the paint. If your water gets dirty, dump it and get fresh.

Scrub the wheels last. Special brushes can get hard-to-reach places, and heavyduty wheel cleaner may be needed to lift off road grime and brake dust.

Rinse and rinse again. Then dry with fresh towels. Apply an exterior wax or polish for that brand-new car look.

Bonus tip Maintain car towels separate from everyday towels, and never use dryer sheets with them because that causes streaks when drying.

Remove trash and other items before vacuuming (you’ll need an extension hose with attachments) working top to bottom, removing floor mats and moving or removing seats as needed. Set-in dirt can be brushed out before vacuuming. 14

For carpets, use an upholstery or spot cleaner and a scrub brush. Reverse the vacuum’s airflow to gently blow out dust from tight spots.

Spray glass cleaner on the cloth rather than the window to avoid streaks.

For the dash, molding and interior trim, use an interior cleaner sprayed on a cloth. Get hardto-reach places with a toothbrush or cotton swab.

Leather can be conditioned with products that use vinyl and rubber dressing (rather than silicone), which will protect against harmful UV rays.
