City cuts Sunday bus service by Robin Murray
According to information released by the City of Nelson, effective August 1st, Nelson bus service will no longer be available. This cut is the first step in the City’s review of the transit system. The transit routes have not been reviewed in decades and the system as it stands is no longer financially sustainable. Future changes are expected before the end of 2011.

Heron sculpture to land in Nelson
The sculpture Heron’s Landing by internationally recognized artist Jock Hildebrand of West Kelowna, BC, will soon find a permanent location in Nelson, BC. The 25ft bronze sculpture of an abstract blue heron was commissioned by Calgary developer Michael Lobsinger of Lake Placid Group of Companies, who is donating it in exchange for a tax receipt. Nelson City Council approved the acquisition of the sculpture at their July 7th meeting. -submitted
City calls for artist proposals
As part of the City’s Art and Infrastructure program, the City of Nelson is calling for artists to put forward a proposal to design and build artistic components (infills) for two railings for the Cottonwood Bridge. The total project budget is $30,000. Nelson man takes top honours at BC’s Premier Physique Contest
Heavyweight Body Builder, Trinity De ‘la Falcons will now head for the Canadian Nationals as British Columbia’s Grandmaster’s representative. Trinity said the event took him back into the gym to train hard for 18 months: “At 208lbs, and 54 years of age, I was 22 pounds smaller and 15 years older, than when I had since set foot on the stage to win the Florida Heavyweight Body Building Championship.” The provincial Championships were held in the Vancouver region, where over 500 fitness enthusiast attended. -submitted

Vacant stores on Baker not a problem Dear Editor; After reading the mayor’s concern about vacant stores on Baker Street, I took a walk down it and counted only 3 vacant stores between Extra Foods and The Food Coop, including the one damaged by fire. In front of one (formerly Lyon’s Shoes) an ugly plywood front intrusively juts onto the sidewalk, apparently waiting for some street art.
Rather than pursuing this rather unattractive and possibly costly strategy of camouflage wouldn’t a simple “COMING SOON” or “WATCH THIS SPACE FOR NEW DEVELOPMENTS” sign on the window work better? Remember K.I.S.S.? That saying is particularly valuable in tight economictimes like these. -Max Shaw, Nelson

France (2004): Widely successful orchestra conductor Pierre Morhange (Jacques Perrin) returns to France when his mother dies. He reminiscences about his childhood inspirations through the pages of a diary kept by his old music teacher Clément Mathieu (Gérard Jugnot). In 1949, a young Pierre (JeanBaptiste Maunier) is the badly behaved son of single mother Violette (Marie Bunel). He attends a boarding institution, Fond de L’Etang, for “difficult” boys presided over by strict headmaster Mr. Rachin (François Berléand). New teacher Mathieu brightens up the school and assembles a choir, leading to the discovery of Pierre’s musical talents and a transformation in the children. The mission of the West Kootenay Francophone Association (AFKO) is to promote French language and culture by organizing and facilitating educational, cultural and social activities and services. In Fall 2011, AFKO will be celebrating its 25th anniversary and we are currently organizing a theatrical tour throughout the West Kootenay region in order to commemorate this important year. Stay tuned but, for now, enjoy the movie!

Duties Include: * provide crisis intervention / safety planning * handle incoming intakes, referrals, support plans and closures * provide individual support counselling and problem-solving to women * participate in daily household chores (ie. cooking, cleaning, etc.) Qualifications: * Degree in related field or combination of education, relevant experience and training in the anti-violence field * Previous Transition House work and/or Transition House Module Training an asset * Strong understanding and feminist analysis of the issue of violence against women * Availability to cover both day and night 12 hour shifts (8:30-8:30) at peak vacation times, holidays and on short notice * Ability to work well under pressure and in stressful and crisis situations This position requires union membership with B.C.G.E.U., completion of a successful Criminal Record Check and pays $15.54/hr plus 10.2% in lieu of benefits. The Nelson Community Services Centre [NCSC] is committed to equality in employment. The emails that we use for the Kootenay Express Update are emails of people who have done business with the Express Newspaper or are emails we have received by personal request to be on our list. What is the purpose of the Kootenay Express Update? The purpose of the Kootenay Express Update is to provide the service of a community newspaper with such features as an events calendar, classifieds, opinions, diversions, for the greater community of Nelson and area. How can my friends receive the Kootenay Express Update? You can send your friends our email and they can respond with the word “subscribe”, or “newsletter” or “update”. What is the privacy policy of The Express? We will never share your email with anyone outside of The Express. We feel
you are part of our family. Is The Express open for Editorial Submissions? Yes. We also want to support the nonprofits of our community and we welcome their editorial submissions. What happened to The Express Newspaper? The Express Newspaper existed as a print version for 22 years, but it could no longer compete against the big corporations for advertising. We are committed to being of community service and we are now in the process of creating the Kootenay Express Update as an alternative to the print copy. There are obvious benefits to an electronic Express Newspaper. We don’t have any printing costs or post office distribution costs. There is less restriction on space. Recipients can print out the pages that they so desire. There are also some disadvantages. Not everybody is internet connected. Reading off a screen is a different
experience than reading off of paper. The Express Update seems to me to be a valuable way to publicize my business. How do I place advertising in the update? We are still working on this because in setting a price for advertising we want to assure ourselves, and you, that you are getting the correct value for your dollars. We encourage you to get in touch with us so that we may begin this discussion with interested local businesses. How does the Kootenay Express Update support itself? At the moment, that’s a very good question. The Kootenay Express Update lives on a subsidy that it is receives from me, Nelson Becker. In the future, the Update will have to support itself. We are in the process of determining advertising value, as well as looking at other methods of raising the necessary funds.
